SEMANTICS , *CATALOGS , *FAITH , *HEALING - Abstract
The genesis of the term ex-votos dates to the Greek and Roman people and brings in its semantics the recognition of faith, being materialized in pieces that symbolize gratitude for a grace achieved, in many cases referring to the cure of an illness. Ex-votos can present themselves in diverse ways. However, this article aims to analyze some aspects of the ex-votive letters and notes researched through the Ex-votos do Brasil project, which aims to identify and catalog the vast typology of Brazilian ex-votos. The focus here is justified by bringing elements arising from a Folkcommunicational and linguistic process, with theoretical bases that substantiate the importance and strength that the ex-voto has with the medium. TRADITIONAL medicine , *HUMAN experimentation , *HEALING - Abstract
In this article, the main objectives were to characterize the notions of health, disease and cure of the Yoruba of Nigeria (West Africa) and to make a confrontation between this ethnomedicine and modern Western medicine, based on evidence, given the fact that these two medicinal practices coexist in African territory. Considering the set of data voluminous to be articulated, as a methodology for the treatment of these data, it was decided to carry out a bibliographic study. The results show the existence of favorable and unfavorable elements both in the provision of medical services by traditional Yoruba medicine and in the provision of medical services by modern Western medicine. Acknowledging the challenges involved in the coexistence of two medical rationalities in the same geographical and sociocultural territory seems to be fundamental for the integration of this medical knowledge and practices for the benefit of the occupants of this territory. It is concluded that integration is feasible and mutually beneficial, and the relevance of ethnopsychological studies on this human encounter is emphasized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

7. «Cosa vuoi che io faccia per te?» (Lc 18,41).

- Abstract
The article starts with some necessary theological clarifications: the priority of care must be affirmed against all dolorism; the importance of emotions and feelings against all rationalism; the objective of the person's integral salvation against all soteriology of the soul. It goes on showing the fecundity of revisiting the praxis of Jesus, specifically of his taking care of those who are affected by illness and disability, in the light of some contemporary studies of cultural anthropology (Csordas, Quaranta, Pulcini, Pilch). On the basis of these theological and anthropological premises, the article examines the text of Lk 18.31-19.10, aiming to highlight the symmetry between the healing of the blind man of Jericho and that of Zacchaeus, together with the whole therapeutic practice of Jesus. With gestures and words expressing a gratuitous and subversive action, Jesus places the human being at the centre and not their physical or moral illness, thus activating a process that begins with restoring dignity to the people themselves, giving them the opportunity to speak and rebuilding their vital ties, and reaches the point of evangelizing the very need for healing, projecting the light and healing/saving power of the Easter events on the human being's condition of limit, fragility and vulnerability. MEDICINAL plants , *SPECIES diversity , *CULTURAL values , *HEALING , *RITES & ceremonies , *FREEDOM of religion , *WELL-being - Abstract
The study assessed the interaction between people and therapeutic plants in the traditional pharmacopoeia in different contexts of healing and religiosity. Homegardens in the towns of Abaetetuba and Vigia, and stands at the market, Feira da 25 de Setembro, in the city of Belém, PA, were investigated. The methodology included conducting semi-structured interviews and photographic records to analyze the cultural and religious value aggregated to plants and their use in the tradition of these populations. The use of 50 species of therapeutic plants was identified, 29 at Feira da 25, 11 in Abaetetuba and 19 in Vigia. There is a greater diversity of species at Feira da 25 and the demand is related to mystical rituals. The species mucuracaá, catinga de mulata, rosemary and basil are frequently used in ritual works for spiritual protection. In the homegardens, residents expressed spiritual and affective connections, wherein the plants have sacred meanings in addition to transmitting well-being. Both at markets and in homegardens, diversity in the use of species associated with the domain of knowledge and traditions passed down through family generations means the use of plants is effective at curing diseases of the body and soul. Modern medicine is an increasingly technological medicine, forgetting that, since ancient times, medicine has always been a technological discipline. Critical views clash in the face of the exercise of technique, especially from those who fear that the dominance of technology overrides nature; on the contrary, technique can be thought as a natural human way of living in nature. DEVIL , *DEMONOLOGY , *MIRACLES , *HEALING , *ARGUMENT , *EXORCISM - Abstract
This article investigates how malevolent figures such as Beelzebub, demons, and Satan were utilized to validate the healing and exorcism powers of Jesus, focusing on the case of the mute/blind mentioned in the synoptic Gospels. The group accompanying Jesus was divided regarding the origin of his powers, with some believing in his divine messianity and others suspecting a diabolical association. The claims about this association did not discredit his miracles but rather his messianic position. The objective is to analyze the corresponding passages in the Gospels to provide historical-cultural arguments concerning the understanding of the transcendent reality in the context of the synoptic Gospels, contributing to the discussion on the Gospels and the historical figure of Jesus of Nazareth. This article retraces Henri Collomb's (1913-1979) experience from 1959 to 1978 at the Centre Hospitalier National Universitaire (CHNU) de Fann, located in Dakar, and provides a historical framework to one of the most significant texts produced by this French psychiatrist, "Psychothérapies non verbales traditionnelles en Afrique", presented at a conference in Istanbul in 1970 and published in French in 1972, translated into Italian for the first time in the following pages of this journal. In particular, the following topics are explored: the methodologies adopted by the hospital team (multidisciplinary and multilingual), the reconfigurative needs of the hospital space, and the introduction of new clinical tools and methods (presence of a family members or accompanying persons, pinth, psychiatric villages), nosological representations and traditional healing techniques, including, in particular, the therapeutic ritual of the N'döp. This text makes an ethnographic approach to the relational complexity present in the Amazonian territories, where the care and cure routes detonate a fact that cannot go unnoticed and is the presence of religious institutions that echoes up to the present time and that marks with deep wounds the history and the life courses that are woven there. Marks of a mainly missional legacy of the Catholic Church manifested in Jesuits and Franciscans, which in addition to spiritual disputes, leads to tensions and re-existence between the actors involved in the care and healing processes. Does the transformation wrought by Jesus in the human being apply only to the spiritual sphere or does it touch other areas of the individual's life? Pericope and Mark 10.46-52 is a beautiful demonstration of how Jesus takes pity on man, manifesting his divine and restorative work in relation to the sufferings of the oppressed. Although being King and Christ, Jesus presents himself as a Servant of humanity, dignifying the individual from the perspective of God, even if for that it is necessary to break some social, religious or cultural paradigm. The story of Bartimaeus points out that Jesus does not only have the scope of his work in the spiritual condition, but his transformation is evident and permeates physical, psychological and social aspects in the life of the individual who sincerely believes in his person and messiahship. LOVE , *PSYCHIATRIC clinics , *PSYCHOTHERAPY , *ENLIGHTENMENT - Abstract
Objetive: this article aims to reflect, through a theoretical study, on the way in which the tonality of love is present in the psychiatric clinic of Ludwig Binswanger. the text, at first, presents the way in which romantic thought and the philosophical atmosphere of the first half of the 20th century seek in some way to centralize the affective question, to the detriment of the exclusive emphasis on reason - imposed by the enlightenment movement. such a philosophical shift seems to support the Binswangerian enterprise in the way that the swiss psychiatrist prioritizes the tonality of love in terms of its healing capacity. From the analysis of three cases--ellen West, ilse and suzanne urban--it is demonstrated how Binswanger unfolds the theme of love, as well as its therapeutic consequences. From this point of view, it is indicated that, in the theme of love, Binswanger remains with some gaps in the way of his therapeutic action and in the consequences of his actions. Conclusions: the article concludes that Binswanger's relationship with the theme of love is part of the patient's attempt to welcome and accept the other as a dimension of radical otherness and this in his relationship with the resumption of community life. this constitutes the telos of Binswanger's psychotherapy. The article analyzes the transposition of mystical experience to the work of art in Marina Abramović. The main hypothesis of this research is that the notions of sacred and spirituality are a key element to understand the passage from performances that thematizes the body that suffers, for performances whose emphasis is on the body that is cured. To support the analysis, will be used images and information presented in the film "In between. Marina Abramović and Brazil" (2016), as well as testimonies, videos, websites and interviews of the artist. The analysis of the artist works and trajectory will support a reflection on the place of the sacred in contemporary art. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This work seeks to highlight the trajectories of three priests who cured with homeopathic medicine in Southern Brazil between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century: Father João Pedro Gay (1815-1891), Frei Rogério Neuhaus (1863-1934) and Father Roberto Landell de Moura (1861-1928). The pastoral, therapeutic and scientific practices of these religious are related to different contexts and historical periods of affirmation of homeopathy in Brazil. From a documentary research centered on the analysis of manuscripts and biographies of the three priests, we seek to understand how relationships between homeopathy, Catholicism and society were established from their different ways of dealing with healing. In the paths traced by the healer priests, religion, health, politics and science meet under the prism of homeopathy. With the legal incorporation of homeopathy in the medical field and the progressive restrictions on its practice by non-doctors, there was a gap between Catholicism and homeopathy in Brazil. RELIGIOUSNESS , *TIME management , *MAGIC , *NEWSPAPERS , *HEALERS , *COLLECTIVE memory - Abstract
The purpose of this article is to discuss and describe how disputes occurred between the healer Faustino Ribeiro Jr. and authorities in the city of Salvador-BA between the years 1903 and 1904. For that purpose, publications from newspapers of the time were used, the lawsuit filed against Faustino, in addition to an article published in Gazeta Médica da Bahia. It is discussed here, not only how much the modernizing and secularizing processes within particular national-nation formations would prevent religiosity, but also, how such processes would end up contributing, even if involuntarily, to the redefinition of magic and religion. Thus, it is explored how much in processes of accelerated modification of life forms, antinomies would be expressed between the consolidation of collective memories of biographical duration, and posthumous historical reconstruction, all within the complex interactions between differentially positioned agents. This essay depicts the last meeting between two friends, Grann and pastor Christ-Roi, two strong figures from the region where I worked in Haiti, in the mountains of the Grand'Anse department. Both old, he evangelist with the gift of healing, she a proud woman who never converted to protestantism despite the fact that all her children and grandchildren did. On the verge of death, Grann calls him to be near her at this moment, without us knowing if she was calling her friend or the healer. The photos show different scenes of this encounter, during which pastor Christ-Roi prays, imposes his hands on Grann, keeps her company. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From Artistic Practice as Research and Performance Philosophy, the question is how the performing body constructs, reconstructs and changes meanings of diverse phenomena, which expands understanding of movement and gesture as a philosophical exercise and related to holistic health dimensions. I share works in which beings move while generating self-knowledge, energetic and spiritualized power related to quality of life. The Performance “Salamandra” (2018) and the artistic exchange project “Salamandra” (2020) were carried out in times of illness, pain, affliction. Reflections complexize theoretical-practical connections to broaden thoughts about healing, science, reality, body, performance, philosophy, cognition, imagination and art.

Third molar extraction is one of the most routine procedures performed by dentists and often presents great postoperative discomfort. Platelet-rich fibrin is an alternative to minimize postoperative symptoms, exerting positive results in the healing process, in addition to being an attractive biomaterial to be used in clinical practice. With the present study, we seek to describe a clinical case report with the use of the L-PRF after extraction of the 3rd mandibular molar. We conclude that the use of L-PRF in third molar surgeries is an alternative capable of providing a less invasive postoperative period to the patient, which is within the reach of dentists, due to its low cost and ease of handling.

Abstract In the first half of the 18th century, treatments for infirmities, surgical procedures and measures of care towards the body directed for the health of subjects continued to be divulged in works of Medicine still under Hippocratic-Gallenic inspiration. In Portugal, in this period, many of the medical treaties were written or, then, translated with the purpose of facilitating the identification of certain illnesses, their symptoms and the adoption of the therapeutic practices most indicated for their treatment, and which foresaw from recipes, whose ingredients included medicinal plants and food, to surgical procedures. This article detains itself over the works Cirurgia Anatômica (1715), by Monsieur Le Clere, Âncora Medicinal (1721), by Francisco da Fonseca Henriquez, and O Practicante do Hospital convencido (1756), by Manoel Gomes de Lima, seeking to highlight the meanings of their discourses in the configuration of certain knowledges about the ways of dealing with and treating the ill body, before the reformations that took place in Portugal in the second half of the 18th century.

- Abstract
In this paper I bring up some ideas on how to search for religious healing through criticism to the concepts of "belief" and "symbolic efficiency". With this purpose, its presented a brief overview of the imbrication between cure and religion in the Brazilian religious field, indicating the vitality of this relationship in the contemporary context, followed by two episodes of healing narrative in which I was personally involved. In the end, I argue that contrary to what the concept of belief might suggest, therapeutic efficacy does not constitute "a discourse on" intervention on the bodies and on the world, but on the practical conditions for mobilizing the truth. The concept of belief does not constitute a good tool for understanding the diversity of implicated mediators of assemblages of healing, nor enables us to understand the intricacies of religious-therapeutic effectiveness. In anthropology, similar critique has also been made to the concept of symbolic efficacy as a conceptual tool for understanding transformations not only of "souls," but also of bodies. - Abstract
This text discusses the conception of disease and its therapy within Kardecist Spiritualism. It frames this discussion in a tension involving karma and healing. After situating the place of disease as karmic debts within the Spiritualist cosmology and its conception of spiritual evolution, it examines the concomitant practice of spiritual healing as important within the Spiritualist charity. The healing process is a cascade of cellular events aimed at recovering the physical integrity of a tissue, a natural healing process caused by injuries, burns, accidents, cuts or tears. When discussing the teaching of cell biology, it is difficult to observe proposals that use the healing process as a theme for the study of cytology. This research aims to investigate the previous conceptions of some in the 9th grade of elementary school about the healing process of a wound and the possible relationships between perceptive hair and cell biology. A research was carried out in a public school in the city of Palmeira das Missões, RS, which had the participation of 30 students, distributed in two groups of the 9th grade, aged between 14 and 18 years. The research is qualitative in nature, through a case study and count with a application of a semi-structured questionnaire. The results of this form are analyzed in the content analysis of Bardin (2011) and establish a high relationship that the students create from the healing process of a wound with the past experiences and the daily lives of each one. The results also state that some of them present random and simplified concepts of the wound healing process. The objective of this article is to acknowledge the growing intersection between art, health and spirituality that many body artists carry out in their artistic-pedagogical projects, assessing how such experiences can impact the crisis of sensitivity the western body faces. To this end, some of the control and exploration mechanisms that neoliberal somatopolitics articulate are described, presenting the artist-educator as the appropriate figure to offer experiences capable of expressing and transforming the new compulsory ways of suffering. It concludes with a review of the possible meanings for the word cure (or healing), often used in these contexts.

This article, crafted by the hands of four artists involved in the research and creation process of Mar Aberto: confluências de vida e arte entre mulheres das águas, started from the premise that writing about healing would only make sense if this was in itself a healing process. Grounded in this idea, the letter was chosen as a format for bringing the tone of intimacy and multiplicity to the voices of the authors who delivered their words as offerings to the four great mothers in African-based religions: the Yabás Nanã, Oxum, Iansã e Iemanjá. As a part of the artistic and research process about women who work with artisanal fishing in Santa Catarina, the Yabás feminine strength emerges as a prayer for transmutation and creation. During these shared journeys of healing and creativity will flow together questions about the body, artistic practices and the process experienced so far. - Abstract
Starting through ethnographic report about the testimonial preaching of a devout Italian saint Gianna Beretta Molla, in a Catholic Charismatic Renewal event, in which she recounts her miraculous experience in relation to this saint, the aim of this text is to think this experience having as a point of starting the somatization of the effects of healing and the narrative which translates around this experience to a specific audience. For this, we based it on the phenomenological concept of "corporeality" elaborated by Merleau-Ponty and developed by Thomas Csordas. The idea is to comprise how is established the homology relationship between two biographies (the devotee and the saint) from this embodied experience and the intersubjectivity which is established between them. It tries to approach Pastoral Psychology from Isidor Baumgartner's proposal. Based on that discipline, it develops a theoretical framework, and adopts Baumgartner's main ideas and his method. The text ends with the appropriation of the author's thought, reassuming two strong topics of his approach: the saving power that arises from bringing together personal history and the Lord's history, and the ability of symbols to transform spiritual experience. The therapeutic potentials of art are valued and embraced by modern and contemporary artists. The modern predilection for the primitive presupposes the possibility of spiritual renewal through contact with sources of natural creativity. Artaud stipulates as a social duty of art: the conduction and the expression of the anxieties and scattered fury of the time - a recognition of the importance of art and fiction as sources of models for emotional life. publishersversion published

- Abstract
This chapter aims to demonstrate that at present there is a revaluation of religiosity, spirituality and religion. Although this fact can and should be evaluated from various aspects, it is recognized that the spiritual dimension receives attention and appreciation, especially from psychology and medicine. This becomes apparent when compared with the disease and healing. Religions and particularly spirituality are important allies in this process, as news and research. However, there is, on that account, an offer and exploitation of religion and spirituality in favor of so-called "magic cures". Religion, medicine and psychology should watch it. There are religious practices that contribute to human health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thus, this brief essay is scope to bring back to the fore, the well-crafted question of the relationship between religion and magic, circumscribed here, the neo-Pentecostalism of the Worldwide Church of God's Power. From the anthropological locus seek to verify, first, the existence of magic in Pentecostal worship, whose focus is the role of the pastor-mage healing ritual in which such practices are more strongly evident, and, secondly, we check through the ethnographic evidence collected in the field, ie, fetishes, magical thinking that permeates the symbolic imagery of the faithful customers, the IMPD.

The work starts from the analysis of the first Brazilian researchers and the place reserved for the understanding of Central African heritage in their pioneering contributions. Then, starting in the first half of the 19th century, analyzing the public manifestations of affliction-fruition cults, held in the main streets of the imperial capital, confused by the biased look of travelers, as Sunday celebrations. The second half of the period was marked by the transition of celebrations to the interior of houses and sobrados located in urban parishes of the imperial court. Moment when religious leaders disputed the liturgical spaces of the city, not by chance, priests and priestesses acted with ease a few meters from each other. With the end of trafficking, the second half of the century marked the need for leadership renewal through complex processes of ritual initiation, which when crossed with sources produced in Central African soil, demonstrate an interesting unfolding of a complex process of Creolization initiated on the other side of the Atlantic, which resulted in the birth of an African Christianity, which is the basis for understanding the rituals, which due to the misfortune of the charismatic leaders who were involved with justice, obliged to respond to lengthy inquiries and processes, as well as constant exposure in the press, they ended up unveiling their performance acts and their choices in the field of the sacred. African Christianity also allowed us to shed light on the choices of the first researchers on the issue of blacks in Brazil, who often chose to silence or mainly do not understand the sacred Central African practices, because they believed they were lost to Roman Catholicism. The work concludes with an analysis of the first decades of the 20th century, allowing not only to analyze the developments of the previous period, but also to deconstruct pre-established ideas about Afro-Brazilian religions, which were believed to be the fruit of a tradition.

Abstract: The article deals with the phenomena of healing, according to the phenomenological appropriation of Book X of Augustine’s Confessions made by Martin Heidegger in the course at Freiburg entitled Augustinus und der Neuplatonismus (SS1921). I intend to present the phenomenon of temptation and the historicity of the self. According to the genuine appropriation of the being of the life of Augustine, the “tentatio” (Versuchung) becomes an expression of the mobility of the historical-actuative existence, which can never be understood as “stillness”. It is the life itself which, assumed in its totality, represents a “temptation”, an ordeal - understood in an ontological-existential sense - insofar as it indicates the “how” (Wie) of facticity. In the search for this originating “how”, there arises the fundamental question of what life is for itself: quaestio mihi factus sum (I made of myself a question). We see, in the loss of “I am”, the process of temporalization as deformitas, as the defluxus in distraction, as the fall into the “inauthentic”. On the basis of this appropriation of the being of Augustine’s life, we will reach the core of the phenomenon of healing, understanding healing as the fundamental character of phatic life and recognizing in the search for God the constitution of facticity and self-healing expressed in this search.

- Abstract
This article aims to describe, understand and interpret the observed case of a young woman with ovarian malignant teratoma, hospitalized in the cancer hospital in the city of Belém, State of Pará, Brazil. The young woman was thought as incurable on the diagnosis of the disease, but her mother clung in "faith in God", because "He works miracles", saying that "ugly things", full of teeth, hair and grease, were removed from her; she also said that she could not understand it all, or full explain it, but she is convinced that "Jesus heals". The mother, an Evangelical woman, held the Bible in the infirmary, praying out loud in front of the girl's bed. Gradually it was alleviated the severity of the case, leaving bewildered the biomedical knowledge, on the recognition of other results, such as healing through prayer, which led that young woman to leave the hospital. This episode, closely observed by one of the authors of this article, allows a discussion that transcends the scope of biomedicine, from the anthropological point of view, especially in the field of the so-called "symbolic efficacy" (Lévi-Strauss), in which shamanism and psychoanalysis can be called to give meaning to this drama, whose outcome was favorable to the young woman and to her mother, until the point that it was possible to observe. This paper discusses the data of the survey conducted in 2008 in the Manguinhos Slum Complex, Rio de Janeiro, on therapeutic itineraries of the local population. By therapeutic itineraries we mean the paths taken by the individual in search of a solution to his/ her health problems. We aim to identify to what extent these paths are ordered by symbolic schemes or by the availability of resources. A qualitative method focused on the semi-directive interview technique, following an ethnographic script, was used. Three residents of each community of Manguinhos were interviewed, in a total of 26 interviews. The results show that the offer of services is heterogeneously distributed, being itself a generating factor of inequalities in disease. The different strategies show that the knowledge and practices of these individuals are made of, and due to different experiences, given biographic situations and that there is not a single model of Therapeutic Itinerary. The urban "marathons" ran by the local population denounce the urgency of the State to put into practice more fair political policies, with a full access to health care, thus ensuring the respect for the rights.
