The article examines alcohol consumption among Jews in Eastern Europe, attempting to challenge the stereotype of sobriety among Jews. Details are provided on the drinking culture of Hasidic Jews in Poland during the 19th-century as well as records of alcoholism among Jews recorded by the 19th-century rabbi Elijah Guttmacher.
