This article introduces and examines a lost literary work which can however be recovered through al-Fitan wa al-malāḥim of Raḍıyuddīn ʿAlī b. Ṭāvūs el-Ḥıllī (ö. 664/1266), one of the most prominent Shīʿīte/Imāmī scholars of VIIth-XIIIth century. The author of this lost work titled Kitāb al-fitan is Nīsābūri Zakariyyā b. Yaḥyā b. el-Ḥāriŝ, who is a Hanafi scholar of the 3rd-9th century. Neither in the limited biographical accounts of the author, nor in any other source could we come across any mentioning of the said lost work. By bringing to light a lost work in the genre of hadith, we hope to have contributed in the field of hadith studies. Furthermore, when we consider the fact that the book contains anti-Umayyad maŝālib reports as well as narrations on Mahdī, it gives the impression that it is authored for the purpose of supporting the Shīʿīte doctrine. It will be elaborated in this article why this work is not visible in the Sunnī circles at all and, based on the content analysis of the work, the attribution of this work to its author will also be studied.
