We carried out a systematic evaluation of the packing forces in co-crystals featuring monoiodo- and diiodo-perfluoroalkanes and 1,2,4-oxadiazoles through single crystal X-ray diffraction and theoretical analysis. The molecules assemble via a combination of halogen bonding and specific dispersive interactions involving the perfluorinated units. We quantitatively elucidated the nature and strength of such interactions through solid-state calculations and Hirshfeld surface analysis. One of the co-crystals, formed by two monoiodoperfluorodecane molecules, the longest perfluorinated chain ever solved at the atomic level, allowed us to fully highlight the role of fluorous interactions.

Here, we demonstrate that introduction of halogen atoms at the tyrosine 10 phenol ring of the DSGYEV sequence derived from the flexible amyloid‐β N‐terminus, promotes its self‐assembly in the solid state. In particular, we report the crystal structures of two halogen‐modified sequences, which we found to be stabilized in the solid state by halogen‐mediated interactions. The structural study is corroborated by Non‐Covalent Interaction (NCI) analysis. Our results prove that selective halogenation of an amino acid enhances the supramolecular organization of otherwise unstructured biologically‐relevant sequences. This method may develop as a general strategy for stabilizing highly polymorphic peptide regions., The power of halogens! The high‐resolution single crystal X‐ray structures of two halogenated derivatives of the amyloid‐β sequence 7–12 demonstrate the role of halogen‐mediated intermolecular interactions in stabilizing the solid‐state supramolecular organization of this otherwise unstructured biologically‐relevant sequence.

We report halogen bonded complexes between 1 polyfluoroalkyl 3 alkylimidazolium iodides and mono iodoperfluoroalkanes of different chain lengths or di iodoperfluorooctane. 19F NMR analyses revealed that the preferred stoichiometry between the donors and acceptors is 1 amp; 8201; amp; 8201;1 in the cases of the mono iodoperfluoroalkanes, and 2 amp; 8201; amp; 8201;1 with di iodoperfluorooctane, as a result of the monodentate behavior of the iodide anion halogen bond acceptor . Single crystal X ray diffraction analyses showed the presence of a perfluorinated superanion, which interdigitates with the cation fluorinated chains, favoring the formation of lamellar structures. All of the obtained supramolecular complexes exhibit enantiotropic liquid crystalline phases over a broad range of temperatures. Most of the obtained complexes show melting points lower than 100 amp; 8201; C, two of them being liquid at room temperature, thus representing a new family of fluorinated ionic liquid crystals

The distribution of the electron density around covalently bonded atoms is anisotropic, and this determines the presence, on atoms surface, of areas of higher and lower electron density where the electrostatic potential is frequently negative and positive, respectively. The ability of positive areas on atoms to form attractive interactions with electron rich sites became recently the subject of a flurry of papers. The halogen bond (HaB), the attractive interaction formed by halogens with nucleophiles, emerged as a quite common and dependable tool for controlling phenomena as diverse as the binding of small molecules to proteinaceous targets or the organization of molecular functional materials. The mindset developed in relation to the halogen bond prompted the interest in the tendency of elements of groups 13-16 of the periodic table to form analogous attractive interactions with nucleophiles. This Account addresses the chalcogen bond (ChB), the attractive interaction formed by group 16 elements with nucleophiles, by adopting a crystallographic point of view. Structures of organic derivatives are considered where chalcogen atoms form close contacts with nucleophiles in the geometry typical for chalcogen bonds. It is shown how sulfur, selenium, and tellurium can all form chalcogen bonds, the tendency to give rise to close contacts with nucleophiles increasing with the polarizability of the element. Also oxygen, when conveniently substituted, can form ChBs in crystalline solids. Chalcogen bonds can be strong enough to allow for the interaction to function as an effective and robust tool in crystal engineering. It is presented how chalcogen containing heteroaromatics, sulfides, disulfides, and selenium and tellurium analogues as well as some other molecular moieties can afford dependable chalcogen bond based supramolecular synthons. Particular attention is given to chalcogen containing azoles and their derivatives due to the relevance of these moieties in biosystems and molecular materials. It is shown how the interaction pattern around electrophilic chalcogen atoms frequently recalls the pattern around analogous halogen, pnictogen, and tetrel derivatives. For instance, directionalities of chalcogen bonds around sulfur and selenium in some thiazolium and selenazolium derivatives are similar to directionalities of halogen bonds around bromine and iodine in bromonium and iodonium compounds. This gives experimental evidence that similarities in the anisotropic distribution of the electron density in covalently bonded atoms translates in similarities in their recognition and self-assembly behavior. For instance, the analogies in interaction patterns of carbonitrile substituted elements of groups 17, 16, 15, and 14 will be presented. While the extensive experimental and theoretical data available in the literature prove that HaB and ChB form twin supramolecular synthons in the solid, more experimental information has to become available before such a statement can be safely extended to interactions wherein elements of groups 14 and 15 are the electrophiles. It will nevertheless be possible to develop some general heuristic principles for crystal engineering. Being based on the groups of the periodic table, these principles offer the advantage of being systematic.

Summary Precise control over topologically intricate molecular architectures remains an open challenge for chemists due to their inherent structural complexity. We report a simple solvent-free strategy to selectively prepare two multi-component supramolecular crystalline systems based on the halogen bond, endowed with either an unknot topology or a Borromean-type entanglement. Real-time in situ monitoring of the solvent-free mechanochemical synthesis of these three-component halogen-bonded ionic co-crystals reveals that the choice of milling conditions leads to a switch in the supramolecular reaction trajectory, resulting in the selective formation of an open halogen-bonded network or a halogen-bonded Borromean-type assembly.

Halogen bonding is an increasingly important tool in crystal engineering, and measuring its influence on the local chemical and electronic environment is necessary to fully understand this interaction. Here, we present a systematic crystallographic and solid-state NMR study of self-complementary halogen-bonded frameworks built from the halide salts (HCl, HBr, HI, HI3 ) of 2-iodoethynylpyridine and 3-iodoethynylpyridine. A series of single crystal X-ray structures reveals the formation of discrete charged dimers in the solid state, directed by simultaneous X- ⋅⋅⋅H-N+ hydrogen bonds and C-I⋅⋅⋅X- halogen bonds (X=Cl, Br, I). Each compound was studied using multinuclear solid-state magnetic resonance spectroscopy, observing 1 H to investigate the hydrogen bonds and 13 C, 35 Cl, and 79/81 Br to investigate the halogen bonds. A natural localized molecular orbital analysis was employed to help interpret the experimental results. 1 H SSNMR spectroscopy reveals a decrease in the chemical shift of the proton participating in the hydrogen bond as the halogen increases in size, whereas the 13 C SSNMR reveals an increased 13 C chemical shift of the C-I carbon for C-I⋅⋅⋅X- relative to C-I⋅⋅⋅N halogen bonds. Additionally, 35 Cl and 79/81 Br SSNMR, along with computational results, have allowed us to compare the C-I⋅⋅⋅X- halogen bond involving each halide in terms of NMR observables. Due to the isostructural nature of these compounds, they are ideal cases for experimentally assessing the impact of different halogen bond acceptors on the solid-state NMR response.

Amyloid peptide hydrogels are a class of materials of great interest due to their structural simplicity, good performances and easy tuning of their properties by chemical modification. Among the possible modifications, halogenation has not yet been exploited extensively. Here, we report the single-crystal X-ray structure of two dihalogenated derivatives of the amyloidogenic sequence DFNKF. The obtained results show how halogenation is a promising tool to stabilize - through halogen bonds - the wet interface of amyloid structures, to determine an increase in the water uptake, hence the hydrogelation properties of the peptide sequence.

2-Iodoethynylpyridine and 2-iodoethynyl-1-methyl-imidazole self-assemble under halogen-bonding control into discrete macrocycles, viz. supramolecular triangles.

A library of supramolecular anionic networks showing Borromean interpenetration has been prepared by self-assembly of crypt-222, several metal or ammonium halides, and five bis-homologous α,ω-diiodoperfluoroalkanes. Halogen bonding has driven the formation of these anionic networks. Borromean entanglement has been obtained starting from all the four used cations, all the three used anions, but only two of the five used diiodoperfluoroalkanes. As the change of the diiodoperfluoroalkane, the cation, or the anion has a different relative effect on the metrics and bondings of the self-assembled systems, it can be generalized that bonding, namely energetic, features play here a less influential role than metric features in determining the topology of the prepared tetra-component cocrystals. Herein, we report the crystal structures of the antimicrobial agent diiodomethyl-p-tolylsulfone and of three halogen bonded co-crystals demonstrating that the bioactive moiety -SO2CHI2 can function as a quite effective halogen bond based motif in the solid state and in solution, namely demonstrating that α-iodosulfones may become a new entry in the quite small group of alkyl-iodides functioning as reliable halogen bond-donors.

Although instrumental for optimizing their pharmacological activity, a molecular understanding of the preferential interactions given by volatile anesthetics is quite poor. This paper confirms the ability of halothane to work as a hydrogen-bond (HB) donor and gives the first experimental proof that halothane also works as a halogen-bond (HaB) donor in the solid state and in solution. A halothane/hexamethylphosphortriamide co-crystal is described and its single-crystal X-ray structure shows short HaBs between bromine, or chlorine, and the phosphoryl oxygen. New UV/Vis absorption bands appear upon addition of diazabicyclooctane and tetra(n-butyl)ammonium iodide to halothane solutions, indicating that nitrogen atoms and anions may mediate the HaB-driven binding processes involving halothane as well. The ability of halothane to work as a bidentate/tridentate tecton by acting as a HaB and HB donor gives an atomic rationale for the eudismic ratio shown by this agent.

Halogen bonding, a noncovalent interaction possessing several unique features compared to the more familiar hydrogen bonding, is emerging as a powerful tool in functional materials design. Herein, we unambiguously show that one of these characteristic features, namely high directionality, renders halogen bonding the interaction of choice when developing azobenzene-containing supramolecular polymers for light-induced surface patterning. The study is conducted by using an extensive library of azobenzene molecules that differ only in terms of the bond-donor unit. We introduce a new tetrafluorophenol-containing azobenzene photoswitch capable of forming strong hydrogen bonds, and show that an iodoethynyl-containing azobenzene comes out on top of the supramolecular hierarchy to provide unprecedented photoinduced surface patterning efficiency. Crystals oftrans- andcis-isomers of a fluorinated azobenzene derivative have been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The presence of F atoms on the aromatic core of the azobenzene increases the lifetime of the metastablecis-isomer, allowing single crystals of thecis-azobenzene to be grown. Structural analysis on thecis-azobenzene, complemented with density functional theory calculations, highlights the active role of the halogen-bond contact (N...I synthon) in promoting the stabilization of thecis-isomer. The presence of a long aliphatic chain on the azobenzene unit induces a phase segregation that stabilizes the molecular arrangement for both thetrans- andcis-isomers. Due to the rarity ofcis-azobenzene crystal structures in the literature, our paper makes a step towards understanding the role of non-covalent interactions in driving the packing of metastable azobenzene isomers. This is expected to be important in the future rational design of solid-state, photoresponsive materials based on halogen bonding.

We demonstrate that halogen bonding (XB) can offer a novel approach for the construction of photoresponsive ionic liquid crystals. In particular, we assembled two new supramolecular complexes based on 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium iodides and azobenzene derivatives containing an iodotetrafluoro-benzene ring as XB donor, where the iodide anion acted as an XB acceptor. DSC and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that the preferred stoichiometry between the XB donors and acceptors is 2 : 1, and that the iodide anions act as bidentate XB-acceptors, binding two azobenzene derivatives. Due to the high directionality of the XB, calamitic superanions are obtained, while the segregation occurring between the charged and uncharged parts of the molecules gives rise to a layered structure in the crystal lattice. Despite the fact that the starting materials are non-mesomorphic, the halogen-bonded supramolecular complexes exhibited monotropic lamellar liquid-crystalline phases over broad temperature ranges, as confirmed with polarized optical microscopy. Due to the presence of the azobenzene moieties, the LCs were photoresponsive, and a LC-to-isotropic phase transition could be obtained by irradiation with UV light. We envisage that the light-induced phase transition, in combination with the ionic nature of the LC, provides a route towards light-induced control over ion transport and conductance in these supramolecular complexes.

The σ-hole and π-hole interactions allow for a systematic understanding of some features of the attractive interactions involving elements of groups 13–18 of the periodic table and of some other groups. Areas of depleted electron density, where the electrostatic potential can be positive, exist on these atoms and these areas can form attractive interactions with electron rich sites (nucleophiles). When the electrophilic atom belongs to groups 14, 15, 16, or 17, the resulting interactions are named tetrel, pnictogen, chalcogen, and halogen bond, respectively. Here we discuss the tetrel bonds (TtBs) formed in crystalline solids on interaction of sp3 hybridized carbon atoms with lone pair possessing atoms and anions. A mapping of the specific short contacts formed in the solid by C(sp3) atoms is realized by discussing selected structures from the Cambridge Structural Database. This mapping led to the identification of some functional groups particularly tailored to form TtBs which can affect or control the packing in crystalline solids. Specifically, it is shown that methyl and methylene groups bound to ammonium, pyridinium, and sulfonium residues can give rise to particularly short and directional TtBs. Topologically, the formed adducts can exist as discrete species or one, two, or three dimensional networks. Fluorine atoms and perfluorinated residues as well as nitro and cyano substituents can also lead to the formation of TtBs which can control molecular conformation and packing in the solid.

Herein, we demonstrate that a bottom-up approach, based on halogen bonding (XB), can be successfully applied for the design of a new type of ionic liquid crystals (ILCs). Taking advantages of the high specificity of XB for haloperfluorocarbons and the ability of anions to act as XB-acceptors, we obtained supramolecular complexes based on 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium iodides and iodoperfluorocarbons, overcoming the well-known immiscibility between hydrocarbons (HCs) and perfluorocarbons (PFCs). The high directionality of the XB combined with the fluorophobic effect, allowed us to obtain enantiotropic liquid crystals where a rigid, non-aromatic, XB supramolecular anion acts as mesogenic core. X-ray structure analysis of the complex between 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide and iodoperfluorooctane showed the presence of a layered structure, which is a manifestation of the well-known tendency to segregation of perfluoroalkyl chains. This is consistent with the observation of smectic mesophases. Moreover, all the reported complexes melt below 100 °C, and most are mesomorphic even at room temperature, despite that the starting materials were non-mesomorphic in nature. The supramolecular strategy reported here provides new design principles for mesogen design allowing a totally new class of functional materials.

Unconventional ionic liquid crystals in which the liquid crystallinity is enabled by halogen-bonded supramolecular anions [CnF2 n+1-I⋯I⋯I-CnF2 n+1]- are reported. The material system is unique in many ways, demonstrating for the first time 1) ionic, halogen-bonded liquid crystals, and 2) imidazolium-based ionic liquid crystals in which the occurrence of liquid crystallinity is not driven by the alkyl chains of the cation. Out of the ordinary: The high directionality of halogen bonds and the fluorophobic effect were exploited in the design and synthesis of a new family of unconventional superfluorinated ionic liquid crystals. The liquid crystallinity of the system is driven by halogen-bonded supramolecular anions [CnF2 n+1-I⋯I⋯I-CnF2 n+1]- which act as rigid rod-like calamitic units.

Two Zn coordination networks, {[Zn(1)(Py)2]2(2-propanol)}n (3) and {[Zn(1)2(Bipy)2](DMF)2}n (4), incorporating halogen-bond (XB) donor sites and azobenzene groups have been synthesized and fully characterized. Obtaining 3 and 4 confirms that it is possible to use a ligand wherein its coordination bond acceptor sites and XB donor sites are on the same molecular scaffold (i.e., an aromatic ring) without interfering with each other. We demonstrate that XBs play a fundamental role in the architectures and properties of the obtained coordination networks. In 3, XBs promote the formation of 2D supramolecular layers, which, by overlapping each other, allow the incorporation of 2-propanol as a guest molecule. In 4, XBs support the connection of the layers and are essential to firmly pin DMF solvent molecules through I⋯O contacts, thus increasing the stability of the solvated systems. acceptedVersion

4,5,6,7-Tetrabromo-1H-benzotriazole (TBBT) is still considered a reference inhibitor of casein kinase II (CK2), a valuable target for anticancer therapy, even though the poor solubility in water of this active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) has prevented its implementation in therapy. We decided to explore the interactions preferentially formed by TBBT in crystalline solids in order to obtain information helpful for the development of new TBBT cocrystals possibly endowed with improved bioavailability. In this paper, we describe the synthesis and the structural characterization of the TBBT methanol solvate and of the TBBT salt with N,N,N’,N’-tetramethylethylenediamine. It is shown that TBBT can give rise to several competing interactions. This API is clearly a good halogen bond (XB) donor, with bromine atoms adjacent to the triazole ring possibly better donors than the two others. TBBT is also a good hydrogen bond (HB) donor, with the triazole hydrogen forming an HB with the acceptor or being transferred to it. Interestingly, one of the triazole nitrogens was proven to be able to work as a hydrogen bond acceptor.

We describe the synthesis and characterization of new trimeric complexes obtained upon halogen-bond driven self-assembly of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene or α,ω– diiodoperfluoroalkanes, acting as XB-donors, with an alkoxystilbazole derivative functionalized with a methacrylate terminal group, acting as XB-acceptor. Despite the fact that the starting materials are not mesomorphic in nature, the obtained halogen-bonded complexes exhibit monotropic LC behaviour with smectic A phases possibly resulting from segregation between fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon chains. The obtained supramolecular mesogens possess reactive groups suitable for incorporation into liquid crystalline elastomeric actuators.

The synthesis and self-assembly capabilities of a new halogen-bond donor ligand, 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-iodophenyl 5-(1,2-dithiolan-3-yl)pentanoate (1), are reported. The crystal structure of ligand (1) and the formation of a cocrystal with 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene, (1)·(2), both show halogen bonds involving the 4-iodotetrafluorobenzene moiety. Ligand (1), being a self-complementary unit, forms an infinite halogen-bonded chain driven by the S...I synthon, while the cocrystal (1)·(2) self-assembles into a discrete trimeric entity driven by the N...I synthon. Ligand (1) was also successfully used to functionalize the surface of gold nanoparticles, AuNP-(1). Experiments on the dispersibility profile of AuNP-(1) demonstrated the potential of halogen bonding in facilitating the dispersion of modified NPs with halogen-bond donors in pyridine.

A small library of 1:1 cocrystals formed on halogen bonding driven self-assembly of α,ω-diiodoperfluoroalkanes with pyridine derivatives is synthesized and characterized through single crystal X-ray analyses. A strict correlation exists between the metrics of the starting tectons and the metrics of the self-assembled architectures. The pitch along the infinite chains, formed on XB driven self-assembly, and the thickness of the fluorocarbon layers, formed due to perfluorocarbon/hydrocarbon segregation, both correlate with the number of difluoromethylene groups in diiodoperfluoroalkanes.

The supramolecular organization in six solid assemblies involving iodo- and bromoperfluoroarene derivatives is described. Single crystal X-ray analyses show that the formation of the supramolecular architectures is controlled by I-⋯Br-ArF, I-⋯I-ArF, Br-⋯I-ArF, and Cl-⋯I-ArF halogen bondings thus proving the X-⋯X′-ArF supramolecular synthon, where X can be the same as or different from X′, is particularly robust. In five of the described architectures halide anions form two halogen bondings and form infinite chains wherein dihaloperfluoroarenes, which function as bidentate electron acceptors, and halide anions, which function as bidentate electron donors, alternate. This behaviour shows halide anions have a fair tendency to work as bidentate halogen bonding acceptors. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

N-Methylacetamide, a well-known peptide bond model, and dihalotetrafluorobenzenes form co-crystals and show geometrically orthogonal hydrogen and halogen bonds sharing the same carbonyl oxygen atom.

Amyloid supramolecular assemblies have found widespread exploitation as ordered nanomaterials in a range of applications from materials science to biotechnology. New strategies are, however, required for understanding and promoting mature fibril formation from simple monomer motifs through easy and scalable processes. Noncovalent interactions are key to forming and holding the amyloid structure together. On the other hand, the halogen bond has never been used purposefully to achieve control over amyloid self-assembly. Here we show that single atom replacement of hydrogen with iodine, a halogen-bond donor, in the human calcitonin-derived amyloidogenic fragment DFNKF results in a super-gelator peptide, which forms a strong and shape-persistent hydrogel at 30-fold lower concentration than the wild-type pentapeptide. This is remarkable for such a modest perturbation in structure. Iodination of aromatic amino acids may thus develop as a general strategy for the design of new hydrogels from unprotected peptides and without using organic solvents., Amyloid assemblies lie at the heart of many physiological functions, as well as being the cause of numerous diseases. Here, the authors subtly modify wild-type pentapeptides with halides, and discover that the new halogen bonding interactions have a remarkable influence on their physical properties.

The in situ cryocrystallisation technique has been used to obtain four adducts between hexamethylphosphortriamide and 1,2-dihalotetrafluoroethanes having iodine, bromine and chlorine as halogen-bonding donor atoms. These systems allowed for a precise comparison of different C–X…O synthons. The effectiveness and reliability of the pharmacologically important C–Cl…O synthons are proven.

Halogen bonding is emerging as a powerful non-covalent interaction in the context of supramolecular photoresponsive materials design, particularly due to its high directionality. In order to obtain further insight into the solid-state features of halogen-bonded photoactive molecules, three halogen-bonded co-crystals containing an azobenzene-based difunctional halogen-bond donor molecule, (E)-bis(4-iodo-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)diazene, C12F8I2N2, have been synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure of the non-iodinated homologue (E)-bis(2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)diazene, C12H2F8N2, is also reported. It is demonstrated that the studied halogen-bond donor molecule is a reliable tecton for assembling halogen-bonded co-crystals with potential photoresponsive behaviour. The azo group is not involved in any specific intermolecular interactions in any of the co-crystals studied, which is an interesting feature in the context of enhanced photoisomerization behaviour and photoactive properties of the material systems.

Halogen bonds occur when electrophilic halogens (Lewis acids) attractively interact with donors of electron density (Lewis bases). This term is commonly used for interactions undertaken by monovalent halogen derivatives. The aim of this chapter is to show that the geometric features of the bonding pattern around iodine in its hypervalent derivatives justify the understanding of some of the longer bonds as halogen bonds. We suggest that interactions directionality in ionic and neutral λ(3)-iodane derivatives is evidence that the electron density distribution around iodine atoms is anisotropic, a region of most positive electrostatic potential exists on the extensions of the covalent bonds formed by iodine, and these positive caps affect, or even determine, the crystal packing of these derivatives. For instance, the short cation-anion contacts in ionic λ(3)-iodane and λ(5)-iodane derivatives fully match the halogen bond definition and geometrical prerequisites. The same holds for the short contacts the cation of ionic λ(3)-iodanes forms with lone-pair donors or the short contacts given by neutral λ(3)-iodanes with incoming nucleophiles. The longer and weaker bonds formed by iodine in hypervalent compounds are usually called secondary bondings and we propose that the term halogen bond can also be used. Compared to the term secondary bond, halogen bond may possibly be more descriptive of some bonding features, e.g., its directionality and the relationships between structure of interacting groups and interaction strength.

The halogen bond occurs when there is evidence of a net attractive interaction between an electrophilic region associated with a halogen atom in a molecular entity and a nucleophilic region in another, or the same, molecular entity. In this fairly extensive review, after a brief history of the interaction, we will provide the reader with a snapshot of where the research on the halogen bond is now, and, perhaps, where it is going. The specific advantages brought up by a design based on the use of the halogen bond will be demonstrated in quite different fields spanning from material sciences to biomolecular recognition and drug design.

Three new push pull molecules having either pyridyl or N, N-dimethylanilino groups as electron-donor moieties and the p-iodotetrafluorophenyl ring as an electron-acceptor group have been synthesized and their single crystal X-ray structures are reported. Halogen bonding drives the self-assembly of these molecules in the solid state giving rise to head-to-tail halogen-bonded infinite polar chains which crystallize in an antiparallel arrangement. The three new nonlinear optical (NLO)-phores synthesized show high hyperpolarizabilities at the molecular level in solution. Rationalization of the obtained NLO measurements is supported by molecular modeling calculations.

The formation of two organic interpenetrated networks on halogen bonding driven self-assembly of diiodoperfluorarenes with tetrapyridyl tectons is described. Both architectures exhibit two-dimensional square 44 networks; with either a 2-fold interpenetration of class IIa or a 3-fold interpenetration of class Ia. Diiodoperfluoroarenes are proven robust tectons in the design of interpenetrated networks based on the expansion strategy.

The single crystal structures of five co-crystals formed by the reaction of different iodide and bromide salts with di- and triiodoperfluorobenzenes (I-ArF) are reported. All of these perfluorocarbon-hydrocarbon systems are heteromeric three-component systems, wherein the weakly coordinating cations favour the formation of naked halides, which function as electron-donors towards the I-ArF modules. The analysis of the crystal structures shows that I−⋯I–ArF, and Br−⋯I–ArF halogen bonds (XBs) control the self-assembly of the obtained supramolecular architectures. 2D and 3D supramolecular networks have been obtained, wherein naked iodide and bromide anions act as tri-, tetra-, or pentadentate nodes. The selected examples demonstrate that I-ArF modules can be particularly robust and reliable tectons for XB-based coordination of halide ions and afford supramolecular architectures in a rational and predictable way.

Halogen bonding (XB) has been recently exploited as a significant tool for engineering crystals involving coordination and organometallic compounds as tectons. This review, in particular, focuses on extended networks based on XB between electron donor groups bound to metals and halo-pyridine and halo-tetrathiafulvalene moieties as electron acceptors. The influence of XB over the structures and the interactions between the organic frameworks and the metal centers is highlighted. The chemistry of some mononuclear systems forming XB is described in terms of tools for controlling supramolecular arrangement and chemical behaviour. Various computational studies on the energy of XB at different levels of sophistication, their advantages and limits concerning the evaluation of the interaction energy and modelling of its origin are critically surveyed. Modelling of a new example of interaction between Cp 2 MH 2 (M = Mo, W) and CF 3 I is reported together with the description of the electron density of the complex analyzed in terms of the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) model.

Self-assembly of ternary mixtures composed of cation segregating agent/inorganic halide (penta-tert-butyl-pentakis(ethoxycarbonylmethoxy)calix[5]arene (1)/NaI or 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo[8,8,8]hexacosane (4)/BaI2) and diiodoperfluorocarbon (1,8-diiodoperfluorooctane (2)) produces crystalline supramolecular salts 3 and 5, respectively, whose structural characteristics in the solid state have been elucidated by single-crystal X-ray analyses. Encapsulation of alkali or alkaline-earth metal ions inside the complexing pocket of the appropriate receptor generates naked iodide anions, which effectively drive the self-assembly of diiodoperfluorooctane 2 into halogen-bonded supramolecular anions with a comb-like copolymer structure. New, halogen-bonded mesogens are formed as trimeric complexes of two molecules of alkoxystilbazole and one of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene. The pure complexes show only monotropic nematic phases, while mixtures show a enantiotropic nematic with a range of up to 11 °C. A possible correlation between nematic phase stability and halogen bond strength is suggested.

The structures of halogen-bonded infinite chains involving two diiodoperfluoroalkanes and a bent bis(pyrid-4′-yl)oxadiazole show that the geometry of the pyridyl pendant rings is translated into the angle between the formed halogen bonds.

A modular molecular kit for the preparation of crystalline molecular rotors was devised from a set of stators and rotators to gain simple access to a large number of structures with different dynamic performance and physical properties. In this work, we have accomplished this with crystalline molecular rotors self-assembled by halogen bonding of diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, acting as a rotator, and a set of five fluorine-substituted iodobenzenes that take the role of the stator. Using variable-temperature (1)H T1 spin-lattice relaxation measurements, we have shown that all structures display ultrafast Brownian rotation with activation energies of 2.4-4.9 kcal/mol and pre-exponential factors of the order of (1-9) × 10(12) s(-1). Line shape analysis of quadrupolar echo (2)H NMR measurements in selected examples indicated rotational trajectories consistent with the 3-fold or 6-fold symmetric potential of the rotator.

It is proposed that noncovalent interactions, wherein it is possible to identify an element or moiety working as the electrophile, are named by referring to the Group of the Periodic Table the electrophilic atom belongs to. The resulting terminology generalizes a criterion which was used in the recent IUPAC definition of halogen bond and inspired the definition of hydrogen bond. A systematic, unambiguous, and periodic naming is obtained and applies to the majority of the attractive interactions formed by the elements of Groups 1, 2, 13–17 and, possibly, to some interactions formed by the elements of other Groups.

Because of their high electronegativity, halogen atoms are typically considered, in most of their derivatives, as sites of high electron density and it is commonly accepted that they can form attractive interactions by functioning as the electron donor site (nucleophilic site). This is the case when they work as hydrogen bond acceptor sites. However, the electron density in covalently bound halogens is anisotropically distributed. There is a region of higher electron density, accounting for the ability of halogens to function as electron donor sites in attractive interactions, and a region of lower electron density where the electrostatic potential is frequently positive (mainly in the heavier halogens). This latter region is responsible for the ability of halogen atoms to function as the electron-acceptor site (electrophilic site) in attractive interactions formed with a variety of lone pair-possessing atoms, anions, and π-systems. This ability is quite general and is shown by a wide diversity of halogenated compounds (e.g., organohalogen derivatives and dihalogens). According to the definition proposed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, any attractive interactions wherein the halogen atom is the electrophile is named halogen bond (XB). In this chapter, it is discussed how the practice and the concept of XB developed and a brief history of the interaction is presented. Papers (either from the primary or secondary literature) which have reported major experimental findings in the field or which have given important theoretical contributions for the development of the concept are recollected in order to trace how a unifying and comprehensive categorization emerged encompassing all interactions wherein halogen atoms function as the electrophilic site.
