A Level 1 building survey and watching brief took place at Hayreed Barn, Hayreed Lane, Wilmington. The building survey and map evidence suggests that the buildings were constructed in the later 19th century, although they appear to have been altered later. The evidence suggests that the store barn is earlier than the stable block, although both are present on the 1874/5 OS map. Five test pits excavated adjacent to the walls of the building were inspected and provided evidence for the foundation construction. The subsequent m0onitoring of the foundation trenches only produced a 20th century soakaway. The only artefacts recovered were from the later 19th and early 20th century.

An archaeological watching brief was carried out at Old Malling Farm, Lewes, East Sussex during the conversion of existing stables into holiday let accommodation. The evidence from a Desk Based Assessment has shown that the site was an important collegiate complex that originated in the later Anglo Saxon period, and was occupied throughout the Medieval period, with some upstanding evidence of the Medieval buildings surviving in the adjacent garden of Old Malling Farmhouse. The building survey has shown that the shown that the stables originated as a narrow building, perhaps open-fronted, until modified, perhaps in the later 19th century (post 1873), by an increase in both height and width. Further modifications were carried out in the last decade of the 19th century and first decade of the 20th century. The watching brief confirmed that the stables did not include any medieval remains, apart from the re-used worked stone pieces which must have derived from the demolished College buildings. It was also confirmed that no medieval features were impacted by the development.

A watching brief was maintained on the shallow ground reduction for a new footpath to the north-east of the main entrance to Battle Abbey. There was an existing Tarmac path to the east of the buttress, this was removed and a thin strip of ground was reduced to the south of the existing path, with the length of the footpath on the western side of the buttress being reduced by 300mm. No archaeological features were note in either of the reductions. However, at the eastern end of the western reduction a concrete plinth or pad was revealed, and at the northern end of this reduction a cut was noted. Interpretation of both these features was difficult due to the shallow depth and narrow width of the reduction for the footpath. A very mixed assemblage of artefacts was recovered, which all could be dated to the late 19th -20th century.

A watching brief was carried out during the reduction of the ground surface in connection with the construction of a new stable block. The ground was reduced by 800mm at its deepest point. During this work no archaeological features were noted. Only a very small number of artefacts were recovered from the reduction. These consisted of three fragments of clay pigeon, and a small sherd of stoneware. Evidence of low level Prehistoric activity on or near the site was recovered in the form of a single piece of fire cracked flint and a single humanlystruck flint flake.

The watching brief on the reduction of the floor level of the cellar at 1, Whitefriars, Rye produced evidence of three floor levels, and a brick built sump possibly associated with a light industrial purpose, and two earlier drains or conduits. The sump and the earliest drains were dated to the late 16th to 17th centuries by sample bricks taken. A second later drain or conduit was also dated to the 18th century by a brick sample. Artefacts recovered consisted of eight pottery sherds, with six of these being recovered from the deposit directly above the natural silty clay. The earliest sherd was a piece of handle from a Saintonge Jug, the rest being later with a date range between the late 15th to mid 18th centuries. Also recovered from this deposit was a fragment of a boulder that had most likely been used as ships ballast. The evidence suggests that the cellar was rebuilt in the mid 18th century, perhaps at the same time as the house itself was also rebuilt.

An archaeological watching brief was maintained on groundworks associated with the construction of a two-storey side extension and replacement single-storey rear extension, a soak-away with associated drain runs and the trench for a gas tank at 1 Southbank Cottages. No cut archaeological features, structures or deposits of archaeological significance were discovered during the project, however after the demolition of the existing south-eastern extension the original southern exterior wall of the cottage was revealed, which comprised coursed flints with brick built quoin. The recovered artefacts comprised a small assemblage of 19th and early 20th century pottery and glass, together with a brass cornet manufactured in either 1919 or 1920. The project failed to provide any new information on the known prehistoric, Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon exploitation of the region, or any fresh insight into the medieval origin and post medieval development of Westmeston village.

A watching brief was maintained during the excavation of the footing trenches for an extension on the south-eastern end of the north-west wing of Bradness Farmhouse, Spithurst Road, Barcombe. During the course of the excavations, at a depth of approximately 800mm below made ground, a deposit of chalk rubble, possibly representing a farmyard surface, was discovered. All the finds had date range from the 19th through to the mid 20th century.

Two evaluation trenches were initially excavated in the interior of the church, one in the Nave and the other in the Chancel, in advance of works to install a new heating system. It was then decided to strip and plan the entire Nave to reduce the internal ground level to the depth of potential impact. In the Chancel multiple grave cuts were discovered below a very disturbed made ground. In the Nave, adjacent to the north wall, two very truncated pits were discovered with pottery dating them to be roughly contemporary with the construction of the church in the 13th century. Multiple grave cuts were also discovered in the Nave, although these were disturbed by a Victorian heating system running through the centre of the Nave. Other artefacts recovered included a number of glazed floor tiles possibly associated with a 16th to 17th century floor. A watching brief on service trenches in the churchyard revealed a single brick built tomb, but no other features

The building survey at Rosehill Country Stores produced evidence for three major phases of development. First the store itself was built with, most likely at the same time, a detached single storey building to the south-west. The next phase was the garage/workshop which was built to the north-west of the country store building. The final phase was the construction of a flat roofed connecting range built between the main building and the detached structure to the south-west. The connecting wing also included a small part of the south-eastern corner of the garage workshop. The watching brief on the trenches excavated to locate and remove the redundant petrol tanks produced no evidence of archaeological features, and produced no artefacts.

No archaeological features were noted during the excavations of the footing trenches for a replacement extension on the western side of Forge Cottage. This was most likely due to the very disturbed nature of the ground. However, two pottery sherds dating to the Saxo-Norman period were recovered from the topsoil, hinting at Early Medieval activity on or near to the site. The majority of the artefacts recovered during the watching brief dated to the period contemporary with Forge Cottage, with other pottery sherds dated to the early Post Medieval period, with the largest quantity dating to the 19th century.

A watching brief was maintained during the ground-works associated with the construction of a new swimming pool and erection of a new garage and pool room. Extensive groundworks produced no archaeological features, and suggested that the area had been previously landscaped. Artefacts recovered included prehistoric flintwork and a single sherd of medieval pottery, then pottery and CBM dating to the 18th century onwards. The hiatus in activity between the late medieval period and the 18th century suggests the site may not have been occupied at that time.

The watching brief at the Old Farmhouse, Norton was maintained during the excavation of a drainage trench and a trench for an oil tank on the southern side of the building and the excavation of a drainage trench to the north of the building. The only feature noted was at the north western end of the drainage southern trench, and was a concentration of ceramic building material and pottery. This dated to between late 18th to early 19th century. The demolition of the interior wall between the kitchen and the pantry was also monitored. This wall was of flint nodules and small chalk block construction, with regular spaced courses of narrow brick/pavers. The timbers previously noted in this wall were isolated and not part of more extensive timber-framing. A doorway in the centre of this wall was revealed, which appears to date from the late 19th to early 20th century.

A standing building survey was undertaken on Spring Cottage, High Street, Hartfield, East Sussex, TN7 4AA. The survey concluded that the cottage was built in the first part of the 16th century and then had a single storey outshut added in the early 19th century. The survey concluded that the new extension will have no direct impact on the historic fabric of the cottage. An archaeological watching brief was maintained during the groundworks associated with the construction of the new extension. The excavation for the concrete raft and associated ground-works for the footings were monitored. A single sherd of an early-post medieval 'Bartmann' or 'Bellarmine' bottle along with some later post medieval artefacts were recovered otherwise no earlier archaeological finds or features were recorded.

During the watching brief carried out during the reduction of the ground surface to create two platforms for the construction of five houses, no archaeological features were noted. However, a linear feature which ran across the site on a north-east by south-west alignment was interpreted as a grubbed out hedge line, the remnant of which can be seen forming the south-eastern boundary of the property to the south-west. Artefacts of pottery, ceramic building material and metal objects were recovered, with the pottery and ceramic building material dating to the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The most interesting metal object was a sword still in its scabbard dating to 1800 or earlier, this would appear to be an un-wanted item from the time the property was owned by a house clearance company.

The redundant farm building at Stockenden Farm is Grade II listed but is wrongly described as a barn and granary. Although the building is now in a poor state of repair there is enough evidence remaining to confirm that the granary was originally an end drying kiln oasthouse with the barn housing the cooling floor on the first floor with a storeroom below. The earliest map evidence for Stockenden Farm is the Tithe Map of 1841 which shows the Farmhouse and a single large farm building, but no building situated on the site of the Oasthouse, however, by the 1st Edition OS map of 1868/70 the Oasthouse is clearly shown. Taking both the building and map evidence it seems likely that the Oasthouse was built between 1841 and 1868/70. However, the suggestion of a slightly earlier date for the construction of the Oasthouse, and the possibility that all of the farm buildings around the yard are portrayed as a single large building on the Tithe map. A construction date in the earlier 19th century is a possibility

A Level 3 Historic Building Survey carried out on Long Cottage, North Chailey, East Sussex revealed that the original single storey north-south range was built before 1839, with this part of the building possibly retaining the remains of an earlier structure. The east-west range was constructed between 1899 and 1910. The north-south range possibly had a lean-to structure adjacent to the northern end of the eastern elevation that was later incorporated into the building when the east-west range was built. There are two later stores built onto the northern end of north-south range and the eastern end of the east-west range. There is evidence that the north-south range of the building was re-roofed, and at this time a protective structure was also built over the well.

During the reduction of the ground surface on a site to the rear of 7, The Street, Kingston, no archaeological features were noted and very few artefacts were recovered. The artefacts consisting of pottery and glass were all later Post Medieval in date. The lack of evidence for archaeological activity could be due to the shallow impact of the ground works which had a maximum depth of 300mm. The south-western boundary wall of the property was recorded. The wall was un-datable but the south-eastern end which was to be demolished to provide an entrance for the parking appeared to be a later extension to the wall or an extensive repair. This was evidenced by the lack of capping bricks and the use of brick in its construction.

A single archaeological evaluation trench measuring 8m by 1.8m was excavated on the lawn to the north of the current house. The trench was to determine if there was any evidence of the London to the Ouse Valley Roman road and associated road side settlement in the area of the site where a proposed detached garage was to be constructed. This road is thought to run through the site. During the excavations the only feature that was discovered was a modern ceramic land drain cut into the natural silty clay. A small number of artefacts were recovered, only from the topsoil; all of these were of a modern date.

Six evaluation trenches were excavated in advance of the construction of 11 units on Land at New House, Station Road, Berwick, East Sussex. None of the six trenches produced any archaeological features. The oldest artefacts recovered were four humanly struck flint flakes, three being later Prehistoric in date, while the fourth was probably Mesolithic or early Neolithic in date. A disturbed animal burial was discovered at the southern end of Trench F and a land drain in the eastern end of Trench E. A small number of artefacts were recovered from the excavations consisting of two sherds of pottery, one of which may be Saxon, the struck flints and a large piece of metal, most likely agricultural in origin.

During the watching brief maintained on the excavations of the footing trenches at Scufflings, Anchor Lane, Barcombe, East Sussex no archaeological features were noted. The excavations produced a small assemblage of artefacts consisting of ceramic building material and pottery all dating to the late 19th to early 20th century. In an inspection of the interior of the house to ascertain the impact of the new entrance into the proposed orangery, two walls of an earlier cottage dating to the early to mid 17th century were noted.

During the second phase of archaeological work at 2 The Close, Seaford, the linear feature found on the earlier evaluation was relocated. It was interpreted as a very truncated field boundary ditch or, more likely, a negative lynchet. The pottery recovered from the excavations dated from the Prehistoric, Romano-British and Medieval periods. A second archaeological feature was discovered to the west of the northern end of the linear feature. This feature appeared to be modern evidenced by the straight cut sides of the feature, but a single sherd of un-abraded East Sussex Wear recovered from the fill of the feature suggests an earlier date. The presence of Roman pottery, including Samian Ware, and a possible Roman Imbrex roofing tile from these works would suggest that there is a Roman settlement of quite high status close by.

CBAS Ltd was commissioned to carry out an archaeological watching brief during the works being carried out at Hamilton House, High Street, Mayfield. As a result of the site's location, and the archaeological potential of the area, the local planning authority put a condition on the planning consents for the development, requiring an appropriate programme of archaeological work to be undertaken. In the excavation of the footing trenches for the extension to the kitchen at Hamilton House a well was discovered directly below a layer of concrete hard standing. The well was constructed of red brick and had been cement rendered on its outer face. At the eastern end of the southern footings trench the cut of the construction trench was apparent in the natural silty clay. This had then been backfilled after the well had been built.

Four evaluation trenches were excavated at Swallows, Old Willingdon Road, Friston, East Sussex. None of these produced any archaeological features, but did produce artefacts of human struck flint. Those recovered being the most interesting, consisting of three Early Neolithic axe-thinning flakes and a single Mesolithic soft-hammer struck flake. These suggest possible Mesolithic/Early Neolithic activity in the north-eastern corner of the site. The axe thinning flakes appear to be associated with the same knapping episode.

No.5 and No. 7 Cavendish Place were originally two separate buildings but were converted into a single building when the property became the Stirling House Hotel. The properties were most likely converted in the 1960s. The properties are part of a terrace and the western elevations retain some of their original features. However, the projecting bays to the south of the main entrances have both been modified. The projecting bay on No. 5 having had its leaded canopy removed, with the projecting bay on No. 7 having been reduced in height to the first floor level. No. 7 has a leaded canopy but this is of a different design to those seen on the other buildings in the terrace. The rooms on the western side of both properties have had a wall inserted at the eastern end to provide a corridor which provides access to the rooms at the western sides of the building. The original western rooms on the first, second and third floors have also been divided to provide more rooms when it was used as a hotel. The properties retain a few of the original features, which include the coving and the centre ceiling rose in No. 5. All the doors have been replaced with modern flush doors. Most of the chimney breasts have had their opening blocked and the fireplace surrounds removed. However, three small cast iron fire place surrounds do survive in-situ. The original coal store at the rear of No. 5 also survives.

A trench measuring 4m x 1.3m was excavated in the hard standing to the south of Methersham Manor, Beckley, East Sussex in advance of the construction of Detached Garage. It was hoped that the trench would locate the moat that was associated with the former use of the site as a Grange of Robersbridge Abbey. The trench was archaeologically sterile of features. A very small number of artefacts were recovered, none of these dating to earlier than the 19th or 20th century.

A watching brief was maintained on the excavations of the footings for a studio in the garden of Lay Cottage, Beddingham. The excavations revealed no archaeological features and a small number of artefacts of pottery and ceramic building material. All the artefacts dated to between the mid/late 19th to the early 20th centuries. There were only two deposits apparent in the trenches which could possibly have indicated the infill of a pond which appears to have been located in the position of the footings trenches. From mapping evidence this pond was filled in between the 2nd Edition OS map of 1899 and the 3rd Edition of 1910.

A Standing Building Survey of Mill Farm has shown that it was originally a four-bay baffle entry house of 17th century date, although subsequently much modified and changed. Brick built chimney stacks replaced the smoke bays in the 18th century, and a small extension was added to the north end of the house in the 19th century. Finally various alterations were made, and an extension added in 1990.

During archaeological monitoring of the excavation of the footprint for a new dwelling at land to the side of 56 Southover High Street, a ditch dating to the late Saxon period was discovered. A possible post hole was located to the east of the ditch, and two further irregular shaped features were discovered to the west of the ditch, these were interpreted as root disturbance. Surprisingly, only a single piece of Medieval pottery was recovered from the excavations. All the rest of the pottery dated to the late Post Medieval period except for two sherds dating to the early Post Medieval. The presence of a late Saxon ditch hints at settlement on Southover High Street at a much earlier date then previously thought.

A visit was paid to Court Cottage, Ditchling on the 30th May 2013, to maintain a watching brief on the construction of a new extension to the western end of the property. However, the groundworks including the footings trenches and a drain run to the former swimming pool at the western end of the site had already been completed. Only the spoil from this process could be inspected for artefacts. Only a single sherd of 20th century pottery and a small piece of animal bone was recovered. A small trench was excavated to the west of the plinth of the new extension, which produced no artefacts or archaeological features.

CBAS Ltd was commissioned to prepare a Statement of Significance on 4, Lewes Road, Ditchling. The walk though survey of the house confirmed the general opinion, as stated in the Listed Building description, that the building probably originated in the 17th century, although a more detailed Standing Building Survey would be needed to confirm this. There would appear to be no impact on the original fabric of the building by the proposed replacement of the 1970s bathroom. The bathroom is located in the later western extension joining this property to the building to the west (Tudor Close). This extension could not be dated accurately from the survey, but map evidence suggests it was added between 1910 and 1932. In the current bathroom the only features of note are the wall studs at the northern end of the eastern wall, and the post approximately in the centre of the western wall. Both of these are to be retained as features in the new bathroom.

An evaluation excavation on the site of the proposed new woodland burial site followed a geophysical survey of the site. Five 20m long trenches were excavated to sample anomalies found during the geophysical survey. A north-south orientated ditch was located on the west side of the site, containing Bronze Age flintwork, some of which was conjoining. This may have formed part of the extensive prehistoric field system that covers this valley. Trench 1 also found evidence of Second World War activity, with a scatter of artefacts and a small cut feature. The remaining trenches only found periglacial features cutting into the chalk, although there was a scatter of prehistoric flintwork from the shallow topsoil across the entire site.

As part of a Watching Brief at The Crown Inn, All Saints Street, Hastings, a walk through survey was carried out on the two outbuildings to the rear of the public house. The survey revealed that the western building possibly retains the southern wall of an earlier building and that the construction of the western building suggested that this had been constructed at a slightly later date. No groundworks took place as the base of the walls of the current buildings were re-used for the conversion of the buildings into a dwelling.

A Standing Building survey was carried out on Fishponds Barn, Hastings, East Sussex. The survey showed that the building was originally constructed in the late 18th or early 19th century, as an agricultural building. The eastern part of the building was used as stables or a cowshed, and a later brick dividing wall created a separate store in the western part of the building. A watching brief was maintained on the excavation works during the conversion of the barn. No archaeological features were noted and very few artefacts were recovered, all of which appeared to date from the late 19th to early 20th century.

CBAS Ltd was commissioned to prepare a Design and Access Statement to accompany Planning and Listed Buildings application the reinstatement of a blocked doorway. This is located in the western wall of the entrance hall leading into the former butcher's shop which occupies the western side of the ground floor of the building. The opening up of the blocked doorway will be a positive alteration to this Heritage Asset. With the re-opening of this access point the shop would become an integral part of the house as it was originally intended, and restore the original circulation pattern of the ground floor of the property.

An Archaeological Watching Brief was maintained on the excavation of the footings for two houses and a detached garage at Spindrift, New Road, Rotherfield, East Sussex. No significant archaeological features were discovered during the excavations. The artefacts recovered comprised ceramic building material, pottery, glass and clay tobacco pipes which are dated to the later Post-Medieval period with a few pieces dating to the earlier Post-Medieval period. The lack of any significant archaeological features is consistent with the mapping evidence which shows the site as gardens to the rear of the houses on the High Street.

CBAS Ltd was commissioned to carry out an Assessment of Significance at St Margarets, West Street, Ditchling, West Sussex, with specific reference to a boxed-in staircase. There is very little visible remaining of the two original flint cottages, with only the cellars remaining, and most likely the boxed-in staircase, which does appear to be original. There appeared to be no features remaining of the western cottage above the cellar, due to the alterations when they were converted into a single dwelling during the Georgian period and on later occasions. The later alterations appear to be the addition of at least two extensions, the single storey on the western elevation and the projection on the eastern end of the southern wall of the drawing room. The alterations over the life of the building also include the removal in part or completely of the internal dividing walls, and the access to the cellars being re-located. If the staircase is to be removed, it is recommended that it is recorded as part of an English Heritage Level 3 survey of the entire building. This might possibly reveal more information of the earlier phases and the subsequent development of the building, and allows an opportunity to record the later Georgian house, whilst ensuring a full record of the staircase is preserved within its context before it is removed.

Four evaluation trenches were excavated on a plot of land at the rear of Goodwin Close, Hailsham, East Sussex. All of the trenches were sterile of archaeological features. The only feature noted was in Trench 2, where a patch of darker soil containing charcoal impacted into the natural, this was interpreted as the site of a bonfire or perhaps the burning out of a tree stump. The only artefacts that were recovered were two pieces of ceramic building material, both of which appeared to date to the 20th century.

CBAS Ltd was commissioned to carry out an Assessment of Significance report on the Ambassador Hotel, 1-3, Howard Square, Eastbourne. The Ambassador Hotel occupies the southern end of a terrace on the eastern side of Howard Square. This Victorian terrace is of six individual dwellings, which were later converted, most likely in the early part of the 20th century, into two hotels. The Ambassador Hotel is made up of the three southern most houses (Nos. 1-3, Howard Square). Opposite on the western side of Howard Square is a second terrace of houses, which have also been converted into two hotels, however, the northern end was bombed during the Second World War. This northern end of the western terrace now is occupied by a brick built building of seven storeys. In the event of conversion taking place, which may impinge of the surviving fabric of the building, it is recommended that a standing building survey conforming to an English Heritage Level 3 survey should be undertaken. This would fully record both the floor plan of the original three dwellings and record and interpret the history of the building including its later use as a hotel. Such a survey would also ensure that a record of the original features is available for future study.

Chris Butler Archaeological Services Ltd was commissioned to carry out a Level 3 English Heritage Standing Building Survey of Little Crank, Ditchling Common, Ditchling, West Sussex. Little Crank comprises two phases; this is evidenced by the differing brickwork and thickness of the walls. Overall the building has little architectural merit in its own right, and the listing appears to relate more to its connection with Eric Gill and the early 19th century house of Hopkin's Crank. However, the changes made to Little Crank in 1961 and the various changes to the associated buildings, means that there is little surviving of the original structure relating to the Eric Gill phase of its life and its use as his workshop, apart perhaps from the inscribed flagstone in Room G3, which may be his work.

CBAS Ltd was commissioned to carry out a standing building survey conforming to an English Heritage Level 3 survey at 224, High Street, Lewes, East Sussex. The Grade II listing of 224 High Street describes it as an early 18th century timber framed house which is now a shop, however, during the course of this survey no evidence for any timber framing could be seen. The only timbers that were noted were in the ceiling of the southern end of the ground floor shop. It therefore seems very likely that the current building is the same as that shown in the 18th century drawings, but it has been altered significantly leaving virtually no features of the original house visible to see today. Although no evidence was found for a timber-framed structure, it may be that this evidence has been hidden within the plastered and panelled walls, and was therefore simply not visible at the time of the survey. It is therefore suggested that any alterations being made to the building are archaeologically monitored so that any further evidence for the origins and history of the building can be recorded.

A watching brief at Yew Tree Cottage, Netherfield Road, Battle, East Sussex was originally carried out by the Archaeology Team at ESCC, and then continued by CBAS Ltd. During the watching brief the foundations to an earlier building or to an earlier and now demolished structure on the eastern end of the current house were found. The building associated with these foundations appears on the 1st Edition OS map of 1874 but on none of the later editions. Only a small number of artefacts were recovered from the site, but this could be due to the small area that was excavated. All of the artefacts dated to the late 19th to early 20th century, and comprised pottery and ceramic building material.

Three evaluation trenches were excavated at 116 Phyllis Avenue, Peacehaven, East Sussex. No archaeological features were noted in any of the trenches. The trenches produced very few artefacts, comprising a single flake of later Prehistoric flintwork, and 20th century artefacts. However, the spoil from a badger set located in the north-west corner of the site produced a few pieces of Mesolithic flintwork and a quantity of fire cracked flint.

CBAS Ltd was commissioned by CDMS Partners Ltd on behalf of Mr M Rayner (the Client) to carry out a Level 3 English Heritage Standing Building Survey of The Gote, Streat, East Sussex. It is clear from this survey that The Gote has been subjected to significant changes both internally and externally, which have affected the fabric of the building, leaving very little visible that can be connected to the original 17th century building. There are very few features in the house remaining that date to the 17th century, except for the chimney stack and associated fireplaces.

A programme of archaeological evaluation and recording was carried out at Boringwheel Mill Farm, Nutley, East Sussex in 2011 in advance of the redevelopment of the farm. Four evaluation trenches were excavated during the project, all of which were archaeologically sterile of features. The building survey of the water mill suggested a construction date of the late 18th century, whilst the farmhouse was of three phases with the earliest dating to the early 19th century, predating the Tithe map of 1840. The barn and most of the other buildings on the farm also appear to have been constructed during the first half of the 19th century, as they are also present on the Tithe map. The farm seems to be a typical early 19th century Wealden farm, albeit involved in the milling of corn and production of bread. No evidence was found for a preceding earlier farm. Similarly no evidence was found for the Post Medieval iron working site thought to have been located near the large mill pond.

An archaeological watching brief and targeted building recording was carried out during the construction of a new extension. The watching brief resulted in the recovery of a small number of Post Medieval artefacts dating to the later 19th and early 20th centuries. The only archaeological feature found was an undated oval area of burning. The parts of the existing building affected by the new extension and other modifications were all shown to be of recent date. Chris Butler

A watching brief was maintained during the excavation of the footings for five houses constructed at 1 Cricketfield Road, Seaford, East Sussex. Two evaluation trenches had previously been excavated on the site in 2009, but since this time the site had been landscaped creating two platforms and the former house had been demolished, also a quantity of soil had been imported onto the site. The footings at the northern end of the site were excavated in the backfill of the demolished house, with the ground level of the southern end of the site being raised with the spoil from the previously excavated footings. This increase in the ground level meant that there was only a shallow impact on the original ground surface. The footings were sterile of archaeological features, with only a small assemblage of Post Medieval artefacts being recovered.

In January and February 2011, a standing buildings survey and trial trench excavation took place at Hole Farm, Dodds Bottom, Nutley, East Sussex. The buildings survey of the farmhouse confirmed a late 19th century date for the construction of the house. An annex, which was built during the 1960s, had been constructed to the north of the farmhouse. The earliest of the other farm buildings surveyed had been modified for use as stables, but from the mapping evidence appear to date to the 19th and 20th centuries. The trial trenches were devoid of any archaeological features and produced just a few artefacts, all dating to the 19th and 20th centuries.

An archaeological watching brief was maintained on the excavations of the footings for a single storey extension on the western side of Backfield Cottage, Winchelsea, East Sussex. No archaeological features were noted, however quantities of pottery and ceramic building material from both the High Medieval and Transitional periods were recovered, which would suggest activity in the close vicinity in those periods.

An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the groundworks and conversion of a barn and adjacent open-fronted cart shed into a brewery at Church Farm, Litlington, East Sussex. Excavations were carried out using a 1.5 tonne and 13 tonne excavators and 220mm and 1.2m toothless ditching buckets. The excavations were cut just into the natural head deposit at their deepest point. No archaeological features were encountered during the watching brief although a small assemblage of 19th and 20th century building material was recovered from the interface topsoil/made ground deposits. A standing building survey was also carried out on the buildings prior to their development

An archaeological watching brief was maintained during the excavation of footing trenches for a replacement extension at The Yews, Ringer, East Sussex on the 1st June 2011. The excavations produced evidence for past activity in the form of pottery sherds dating to both the Medieval and Post Medieval periods. The ground had been badly disturbed by the construction of a milk cellar in the late 19th century and its subsequent demolition, together with a later extension on this part of the site.
