The “Crucifixion with the twelve Apostles”, a unique Coptic embroidered panel, was on display at the Benaki Museum (Athens, Greece). The representation of the “Crucifixion” with Christ in the center and six Apostles on either side, standing next to each other in frontal poses, is quite a rare one. This rare iconographic image of the twelve Apostles could be linked to the Ascension or the Pentecost. This unique representation of the Crucifixion with the twelve Apostles, which also involves the Ascension, is a one-of-a-kind compositional formula representing Christ’s Death as a triumph over Death, emphasizing, along with the other factors, its non-Chalcedonic origin. Moreover, the interpretation of an inscription, written in at least three languages embroidered in black silk thread, is a matter which confuses the issue even more. In the present study, we will attempt a comprehensive investigation, a detailed description, and interpretation of this rare iconography, based on written and iconographic evidence traced in the history of art heritage objects.

The project NOTAE: NOT A writtEn word but graphic symbols. An evidence-based reconstruction of another written world in pragmatic literacy from Late Antiquity to early medieval Europe is an ERC Advanced Grant (2018–2023), which represents the first attempt to investigate the presence of graphic symbols in documentary records as a historical phenomenon from Late Antiquity to early medieval Europe.

MAREK DOSPĚL Bīr Shawīsh, Small Oasis: Ostraka and Other Inscribed Material ABSTRACT The present dissertation is primarily a publication of a group of primary sources. These sources come from the recent archaeological exploration by Charles University in Prague of the site of Bīr Shawīsh in the Baḥrīya Oasis ("Small Oasis" in Classical Antiquity) in Egypt's Western Desert and consist of inscribed material written in Hellenistic Greek or koinē. Their majority belongs in the family of documentary texts, while a smaller group consists of informal inscriptions. Both texts and inscriptions are written or incised on fired potter's clay supports and can be dated to around 400 CE. The core of this dissertation consists of an annotated edition of these texts and inscriptions (Chapter 3), immediately followed by a synthetic and interpretative Chapter 4 in which the cardinal issues inherent to the published material are treated in detail. An important part of the edition are the analytical indices and appendices. Chapter 1 serves as a general introduction to the work; Chapter 2 presents the historical and archaeological context of the edited inscribed material. Nature, intensity and result of the linguistic interference between the Greek and Egyptian languages in late Antiquity is a controversial theme, still open to debate. This contribution simply aims at providing a sound linguistic background taking into account most recent developments in the field of contact linguistics. Some theoretical tools like the distinction between borrowing and pragmatic code-switching could in fact turn out to be of particular relevance to the interpretation of the apparently numerous Greek borrowings in Coptic, and the comparison with other historical situations of contact recently or newly investigated has much to offer to anyone interested in the case of Coptic. The process involves a critical overview of positions held by some specialists whom ideological bias about cultural hierarchy has led to a peculiar understanding of linguistic change and its motivations.; La nature, l'intensité et le résultat de l'interférence linguistique entre grec et égyptien dans l'antiquité tardive est une question controversée encore débattue. On voudrait ici contribuer à une mise en perspective linguistique du phénomène tirant parti des plus récents développements de la recherche sur le contact linguistique. Le recours à certains outils théoriques tels que la distinction entre emprunt et permutation de code pragmatique pourrait en effet se révéler particulièrement profitable dans l'interprétation des emprunts apparemment abondants du copte au grec, et la comparaison avec d'autres situations historiques de contact récemment ou nouvellement étudiées est susceptible d'enrichir considérablement la réflexion sur le cas du copte. Cette démarche implique un retour critique sur certaines prises de position que des présupposés idéologiques liés à une hiérarchie des cultures ont conduit à une conception très particulière du changement linguistique et de ses motivations.
