Most pH sensors operate under potentiometric conditions using a simple two-electrode scheme. More generally, a conventional meter measures the electrical potential of the solution using a glass electrode (pH) against another electrode (reference), whose electrochemical potential is known and insensitive to pH. Modern pH sensors are robust, accurate and low cost, but they are limited by the macroscopic electrode size. They also require electrical contacts and they are often affected by errors associated with the contamination of the small electrode liquid junctions. This thesis targets pH measurements at nanoscale interfaces and explores the miniaturization of the pH sensor for local and remote (optical) measurements. By taking advantage of a non-destructive optical technique based on Raman spectroscopy and of the redox chemistry of metals, this work aims to develop a remote pH sensor based on carbon nanomaterials, namely the single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) and the graphene in the form of a single layer. By making use of the highly sensitive Raman response of metallic SWCNTs, we devised a pH responsive optical probe consisting of a SWCNT in direct contact with a platinum redox couple. When placed in a buffer solution, the Pt-SWCNT probe shows strong Raman shifts of the nanotube G-band as a function of pH, which is ascribed to charge transfer doping of the SWCNT reference electrode. Referenced potential measurements are demonstrated using a nanoscale version of the Pt-SWCNT electrode, along with the accurate monitoring of pH in solutions of different ionic strengths. Controlled experiments at a constant ionic strength show pH measurement across the full range between 1 to 12 with a best accuracy of ±500 mpH unit. This study also explores the influence of different transition metals (Pt, Ru and Pd), of semiconducting vs. metallic SWCNTs, and supporting substrates on pH sensing. A model based on electron transfer between the redox metal system and the SWCNT is proposed and tested using electrical conductance measurements. Due to the outstanding properties of graphene, such as a semi metallic behavior and its relatively inert surface, graphene was selected as a second nanomaterial to further investigate the Raman-pH sensing. From the study with SWCNTs, which determines optimal response with the Pt/PtO redox couple, we explore the Raman response of graphene coated with a thin layer of Pt in different buffer solutions of pH between 1 and 12. The spectra show clear evidence of charge transfer and doping of graphene in contact with the platinum redox couple. Significant Raman shift with pH is noted in the region of the G-band and also in D-band, which are consistent with the behavior found with the metallic Pt-SWCNT system. An analysis of the Raman shift provides a better understanding of the doping behavior observed for different pH. The analysis provides an estimate of the potential and confirms the Nernstian behavior of the pH sensor. Redox pH sensing at the nanoscale using carbon nanomaterials solves the main limitations highlighted above, namely coverage of the full pH range and a clear miniaturization of the sensor down to the nanometer scale. Although the accuracy requires further improvement, this work demonstrates for the first time an optical pH sensing scheme that is analogous to a conventional pH sensor equipped with a built-in internal reference., La plupart des capteurs de pH fonctionnent dans des conditions potentiométriques en utilisant un schéma simple à deux électrodes. Plus généralement, un pH mètre classique mesure le potentiel électrique de la solution à l'aide d'une électrode en verre (pH) contre une autre électrode (référence), dont le potentiel électrochimique est connu et insensible au pH. Les capteurs de pH modernes sont robustes, précis et peu coûteux, mais ils sont limités par les tailles macroscopiques des électrodes. Ils nécessitent également des contacts électriques et sont souvent affectés par des erreurs liées à la contamination des petites jonctions liquides des électrodes. Cette thèse concerne l'amélioration des mesures de pH aux interfaces nanométriques et explore la miniaturisation du capteur de pH pour des mesures (optiques) locales et à distance. En tirant parti d'une technique optique non destructive basée sur la spectroscopie Raman et de la chimie redox des métaux, ce travail vise à développer un capteur de pH à distance à base de nanomatériaux de carbone, à savoir le nanotube de carbone à simple paroi (SWCNT) et le graphène monofeuillet. En utilisant la réponse Raman très sensible des SWCNT métalliques, nous avons conçu une sonde optique sensible au pH constituée d'un SWCNT en contact direct avec un couple redox platine. Lorsqu'elle est placée dans une solution tampon, la sonde Pt-SWCNT montre un fort décalage Raman de la bande G du nanotube en fonction du pH, qui est attribué au dopage par transfert de charge de l'électrode de référence SWCNT. La mesure du potentiel référencé est démontrée à l'aide d'une version nanométrique de l'électrode Pt-SWCNT, ainsi que par la surveillance précise du pH dans des solutions de différentes forces ioniques. Des expériences contrôlées à force ionique constante montrent des mesures de pH sur toute la gamme entre 1 et 12 avec une précision allant jusqu'à ± 500 mpH. Cette étude explore également l'influence de différents métaux de transition (Pt, Ru et Pd), du caractère électronique des SWCNTs et des substrats de soutien sur les détection de pH. Un modèle basé sur le transfert d'électrons entre le système métallique redox et le SWCNT est proposé et testé à l'aide de mesures de conductance électrique. En raison des propriétés exceptionnelles du graphène, telles qu'un comportement semi-métallique et une surface relativement inerte, le graphène a été sélectionné comme deuxième nanomatériau pour approfondir la détection Raman-pH. À partir de l'étude avec les SWCNT, qui détermine qu'une réponse optimale est obtenue avec le couple redox Pt / PtO, nous explorons la réponse Raman du graphène recouvert d'une fine couche de Pt dans différentes solutions tampons avec pH iv entre 1 et 12. Les spectres montrent des preuves claires de transfert de charge et dopage du graphène en contact avec le couple redox platine. Un décalage Raman significatif avec le pH est noté dans la région de la bande G et également dans la bande D, ce qui est cohérent avec le comportement trouvé avec le système Pt-SWCNT métallique. Une analyse du décalage Raman permet de mieux comprendre le comportement de dopage observé à différents pH. L'analyse fournit une estimation du potentiel et confirme le comportement Nerstien du capteur de pH. La détection de pH redox à l'échelle nanométrique avec des nanomatériaux de carbone permet de résoudre les principales limitations mises en évidence ci-dessus, à savoir la couverture de toute la gamme de pH et une miniaturisation claire du capteur jusqu'à l'échelle nanométrique. Bien que la précision nécessite une amélioration supplémentaire, ce travail démontre pour la première fois un schéma de détection optique du pH qui est analogue à un capteur de pH conventionnel équipé d'une référence interne intégrée.

Le graphène est un matériau très intéressant grâce à ses excellentes propriétés optiques, électriques et mécaniques. Parmi les méthodes de synthèse du graphène monocouche, la croissance par le dépôt chimique en phase vapeur (CVD) sur un métal est des plus efficaces et économiques pour assurer une production industrielle. Cette méthode demande toutefois une étape de transfert du graphène à partir du substrat catalytique de la croissance (généralement du cuivre) vers le substrat désiré. Plusieurs méthodes permettent d’effectuer ce transfert et les plus répandues impliquent généralement l’usage d’un polymère, car il présente des avantages intéressants, comme la simplicité et le faible coût, mais également des désavantages liés à l’introduction de défauts ou de résidus organiques sur la surface du graphène transféré. Pour conserver la qualité et les propriétés du graphène après le processus de transfert, nous avons travaillé à développer une méthode qui vise à éliminer les désavantages du transfert avec un polymère tout en permettant un transfert simple et propre de graphène sans défaut. La méthode retenue utilise un film d’or comme support pour faciliter le transfert du graphène sur gaufre de silicium. Pour augmenter l’adhésion à la gaufre de silicium, il a été nécessaire d’introduire une étape de recuit des échantillons de graphène après le transfert avec le film d’or. Le film d’or est ensuite enlevé par la gravure chimique humide, en utilisant une solution aqueuse d’iode et d’iodure de potassium, ce qui permet de produire une monocouche de graphène sur de grandes dimensions. Après une optimisation du processus complet, nos résultats du graphène transféré sur substrat de silice présentent peu des défauts selon les mesures Raman et l’absence des résidus organiques sur la surface par la topographie AFM., Graphene is an interesting material thanks to its excellent optical, electrical and mechanical properties. Among the methods for synthesizing high quality monolayer graphene, growth by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on a metal is one of the most effective and economical for industrial production. However, this method requires a step to transfer graphene from the growth catalytic substrate (generally copper) to the desired substrate. Several methods allow this transfer to be carried out and the most widespread methods generally involve the use of a polymer. The main advantages are simplicity and low cost. However, there are also disadvantages related to the introduction of defects or organic residue on the surface of the transferred graphene. To maintain the quality and properties of graphene after the transfer process, we have developed a method aimed at eliminating the disadvantages of a transfer with polymer. The developed method uses a gold film as a support to facilitate the transfer of graphene onto a silicon wafer. It is a simple way to produce defect-free graphene. To increase the adhesion to the silicon wafer, it was necessary to introduce a step of annealing the graphene samples after the transfer with the gold film. The gold film was then removed by wet chemical etching with an aqueous solution of iodine and potassium iodide, which makes it possible to produce a monolayer of graphene over large dimensions. After optimizing the entire process, our results of graphene transferred on silicon substrate show few defects based on Raman measurements and the absence of organic residues on the surface by AFM topography.

Le graphène est un nano-matériau très prometteur grâce à ses excellentes propriétés mécaniques, optiques et électriques. Toutefois, la plupart de ses applications les plus novatrices requièrent de l'altérer, mais la compréhension du graphène altéré est encore limitée. Certaines applications envisagées sont en optique infrarouge. Or, notre compréhension actuelle du graphène ne permet pas d’expliquer l’apparition des pics infrarouges qui sont observés dans les bicouches et dans les monocouches fonctionnalisées. Le comportement du graphène fonctionnalisé est particulièrement contre-intuitif, puisque l’ajout de greffons le rend plus transparent, et non pas plus opaque! Un modèle proposé par Bruno Rousseau, un étudiant post-doctorant du professeur Michel Côté à l'Université de Montréal, suggère une explication à ce phénomène: bien que les phonons du graphène ne puissent pas coupler directement avec la lumière, ils coupleraient indirectement avec celle-ci grâce à des collisions sur les électrons, qui eux, peuvent coupler avec les photons. Ce couplage indirect peut produire des interférences parfois constructives, parfois destructives, de telle sorte que ce mécanisme peut autant produire des pics d’absorbance que de transparence. Dans le cadre de ce mémoire, nous avons entrepris de vérifier expérimentalement la validité de ce modèle, et nous concluons qu’il semble prédire adéquatement le comportement de l’activité infrarouge des bicouches de graphène et des monocouches fonctionnalisées. Nous avons aussi étudié les méthodes par lesquelles nous synthétisions ces différents types de graphène afin de les optimiser. Enfin, nous avons déterminé des techniques, basées sur la spectroscopie Raman, permettant de bien caractériser l’intensité de l’altération causée par ces méthodes., Graphene is a promising nanomaterials thanks to its excellent mechanical, optical and electrical properties. However, its most innovative applications require that it be altered, but the understanding altered graphene is still limited. Some applications are considered in infrared optics. However, our current understanding of graphene does not explain the appearance of the infrared peaks that are observed in bilayers and grafted monolayers. The behaviour of grafted graphene is especially baffling, since the addition of grafts makes it more transparent, not less! A model proposed by Bruno Rousseau, a postdoctoral student of Professor Michel Côté at Université de Montréal, suggests an explanation for this phenomenon: although the phonons of graphene cannot couple directly with light, they could couple indirectly through collisions with the electrons, which can couple with photons. This indirect coupling may produce constructive and destructive interference, depending on the conditions, so this mechanism can produce absorbance peaks as much as transparency peaks. In this master’s thesis, we have undertaken to experimentally verify the validity of this model, and we conclude that it seems to adequately predict the behaviour of the infrared activity of graphene bilayers and grafted monolayers. We also studied the methods by which we synthesized these different types of graphene to optimize them. Le graphène est une nanostructure de carbone hybridé sp2 dont les propriétés électroniques et optiques en font un matériau novateur avec un très large potentiel d’application. Cependant, la production à large échelle de ce matériau reste encore un défi et de nombreuses propriétés physiques et chimiques doivent être étudiées plus en profondeur pour mieux les exploiter. La fonctionnalisation covalente est une réaction chimique qui a un impact important dans l’étude de ces propriétés, car celle-ci a pour conséquence une perte de la structure cristalline des carbones sp2. Néanmoins, la réaction a été très peu explorée pour ce qui est du graphène déposé sur des surfaces, car la réactivité chimique de ce dernier est grandement dépendante de l’environnement chimique. Il est donc important d’étudier la fonctionnalisation de ce type de graphène pour bien comprendre à la fois la réactivité chimique et la modification des propriétés électroniques et optiques pour pouvoir exploiter les retombées. D’un autre côté, les bicouches de graphène sont connues pour avoir des propriétés très différentes comparées à la monocouche à cause d’un empilement des structures électroniques, mais la croissance contrôlée de ceux-ci est encore très difficile, car la cinétique de croissance n’est pas encore maîtrisée. Ainsi, ce mémoire de maîtrise va porter sur l’étude de la réactivité chimique du graphène à la fonctionnalisation covalente et de l’étude des propriétés optiques du graphène. Dans un premier temps, nous avons effectué des croissances de graphène en utilisant la technique de dépôt chimique en phase vapeur. Après avoir réussi à obtenir du graphène monocouche, nous faisons varier les paramètres de croissance et nous nous rendons compte que les bicouches apparaissent lorsque le gaz carboné nécessaire à la croissance reste présent durant l’étape de refroidissement. À partir de cette observation, nous proposons un modèle cinétique de croissance des bicouches. Ensuite, nous effectuons une étude approfondie de la fonctionnalisation du graphène monocouche et bicouche. Tout d’abord, nous démontrons qu’il y a une interaction avec le substrat qui inhibe grandement le greffage covalent sur la surface du graphène. Cet effet peut cependant être contré de plusieurs façons différentes : 1) en dopant chimiquement le graphène avec des molécules réductrices, il est possible de modifier le potentiel électrochimique afin de favoriser la réaction; 2) en utilisant un substrat affectant peu les propriétés électroniques du graphène; 3) en utilisant la méthode d’électrogreffage avec une cellule électrochimique, car elle permet une modulation contrôlée du potentiel électrochimique du graphène. De plus, nous nous rendons compte que la réactivité chimique des bicouches est moindre dû à la rigidité de structure due à l’interaction entre les couches. En dernier lieu, nous démontrons la pertinence de la spectroscopie infrarouge pour étudier l’effet de la fonctionnalisation et l’effet des bicouches sur les propriétés optiques du graphène. Nous réussissons à observer des bandes du graphène bicouche dans la région du moyen infrarouge qui dépendent du dopage. Normalement interdites selon les règles de sélection pour la monocouche, ces bandes apparaissent néanmoins lorsque fonctionnalisée et changent grandement en amplitude dépendamment des niveaux de dopage et de fonctionnalisation., Graphene is a sp2 hybridized carbon nanostructure with incredible electronical and optical properties that make it interesting for various applications. Its large scale production is still a challenge and there is still some physical and chemical properties that need further studies to better exploit them. Covalent functionalization is a chemical reaction that can be used as a tool to study those properties because it breaks the sp2 crystalline structure, so it modulates the properties of graphene. There are not many studies of that reaction on graphene deposited on a surface because the chemical reactivity depends greatly on the chemical environment. That is why it is important to study the functionalization of graphene on surfaces to understand chemical reactivity and the modification of electronical and optical properties in order to potentially exploit the benefits. This master thesis is focusing on the chemical reactivity of graphene to covalent functionalization and the study of its optical properties. First, we grow graphene using the chemical vapour deposition method. After the growth of monolayer, we change the parameters and we observe the formation of bilayers if the carbonated gas is present during the cooling step of the growth. From that observation, we propose a kinetic model of bilayer growth. Then we proceed to a detailed study of monolayer and bilayer graphene functionalization. First, we demonstrate that there is a substrate effect that inhibits greatly the grafting of organic molecules on the graphene surface. However it is possible to overcome this substrate effect by different ways: 1) chemical doping of the graphene with reducing molecules can modify the electrochemical potential to enhance the reaction; 2) transferring graphene on a substrate that doesn’t affect the electronical properties of graphene; 3) the use of an electrografting method with an electrochemical cell can also modulate the potential so the efficiency of the reaction is enhanced. Also, we observe that the chemical reactivity of bilayer graphene is lower compared to the monolayer because of structural rigidity caused by interlayer interaction. Finally, we demonstrate that the infrared spectroscopy is a powerful tool to study the effect of functionalization and the effect of bilayers on the optical properties of graphene. We observe some bands in the region of the mid-IR, while the infrared selection rules don’t predict any. Also, the shape of those bands change greatly depending on the doping level when there is bilayers or when the graphene is functionalized.

Tailoring the properties of graphene has been the subject of very intensive research during the past few years. Such modification can be readily achieved using chemical functionalization with foreign atoms thanks to the two-dimensional nature of the material. The exact impact of such chemical treatment cannot always be accurately tackled experimentally, thus requiring active input from modeling and numerical simulations. Theoretical models predict weak localization to occur in graphene under certain specific conditions, including the mixing between inequivalent K-point valleys induced by short-range disorder. Mesoscopic computer simulations based on accurate parameters extracted from first-principles Density Functional Theory calculations, and applied to realistic graphene samples (with sizes comparable to experimental ones), allow to verify the existence of such quantum interference effects, in both hydrogenated and ozonated graphene. The seminal work by Geim and Novoselov suggested an Anomalous Quantum Hall Effect in graphene. In order to observe the very characteristic quantization of states in transverse conductivity measurements, the disordered system should combine the presence of both localized and extended states at specific critical energies, separated by mobility edges. The specific impact of disorder on this new quantum Hall effect is still a strongly debated issue among the theoretical community, due to the complexity of the calculations that have to be performed on realistic graphene samples. The present work extends the knowledge on simplified disorder models to the realistic cases of oxygen functionalization and hydrogenation on the transport properties of graphene. Particular attention is given to the specific impact of symmetry breaking induced by the non-equivalence of the two sub-lattices inherently present in the hexagonal structure. By including the effect of an external perpendicular magnetic field, the impact of symmetry preserving disorder on the Hall quantization is partially clarified. The appearance of previously unknown critical states specifically due to disorder in the diagonal conductivity is confirmed using a new formalism, which allows to predict the Hall conductivity. In order to extend the range of possible applications of graphene-based material, the spin degree of freedom has to be considered in addition to the conventional charge component of the carriers. In this context, a better understanding of possible intrinsic magnetism in graphene is required. Presently, no full consensus exists in the community regarding the possibility to induce paramagnetic centers and/or long-range interaction coupling between these local magnetic moments. A theoretical model is proposed allowing to check the existence of (anti)-ferromagnetism in graphene induced by hydrogen functionalization, through the observation of possible magneto-resistivity fingerprints.
