The periodical press of the teaching profession experienced a special boom in the last quarter of the 19th century, a time when publications multiplied and the teaching press became more professional, thus becoming a privileged channel for the dissemination of ideas and pedagogical and linguistic knowledge. In this paper we are interested in analysing together two fundamental ways of channelling grammatical thought in the nineteenth century: that of the professional teaching press (the media way) and that of the grammatical treatises signed by the same authors who wrote in the different newspapers of the field (the textbooks way). Specifically, we will delve into one of the many grammatical controversies that took place on the pages of the written press during the 19th century (and which has recently been dealt with by Gaviño Rodríguez 2021a): the debate on the nature of possessives (initiated in September 1873 and ended in April 1874) in order to: (i) compare the different arguments used with the doctrine defended by the debaters in their respective grammar books; (ii) verify the feedback of these two main ways of channelling grammatical thought; (iii) check the effectiveness of the press as a channel for debate and linguistic reflection, as well as a means of ongoing teacher training.
