Synergic effects of glyphosate and saflufenacil have been reported to control Conyza spp. However, the mechanism of this synergic combination is unknown. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of the combination of glyphosate and saflufenacil on the control and resistance status of glyphosate-resistant (GR) C. bonariensis, as well as on oxidative stress and lipidic peroxidation. Glyphosate-resistant and glyphosate-sensitive (GS) biotypes were treated with different rates of saflufenacil, glyphosate, and glyphosate combined with saflufenacil. The combination of glyphosate (1480 g ae ha-1) and saflufenacil (&ge, 15 g ha&minus, 1) presented the best control of GR plants compared with their individual effects. It also reduced the resistance factor from 19.6 to 4.6 (4.3-fold) and represents a good alternative for resistance management. The combination of glyphosate and saflufenacil resulted in higher oxidative stress and lipidic peroxidation compared with the effects of either herbicide alone. The oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation promoted by the combination of the herbicides occurred earlier after treatment and remained at higher levels over a longer period (12&ndash, 192 h) compared with their individual results. The combined oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation at high levels over a long time is likely to be one reason that the combination of glyphosate and saflufenacil effectively controls GR C. bonariensis.

Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum, LOLMU) is one of the most troublesome weeds in temperate regions in the world. This weed species interfere with wheat, corn, rye, and oat, causing significant crop yield losses. This species has evolved glyphosate resistance, making it difficult to control. The mechanisms of glyphosate resistance are still unknown, and an understanding thereof will favor the development of new strategies of management. The present study is the first transcriptome study in LOLMU using glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive biotypes, aiming to identify and to provide a list of the candidate target genes related to glyphosate resistance mechanism. The transcriptome was assembled de novo, producing 87,433 contigs with an N50 of 740 bp and an average length of 575 bp. There were 92 and 54 up- and down-regulated genes, respectively, in the resistant biotype, while a total of 1683 were differentially expressed in the sensitive biotype in response to glyphosate treatment. We selected 14 highly induced genes and seven with repressed expression in the resistant biotype in response to glyphosate. Of these genes, a significant proportion were related to the plasma membrane, indicating that there is a barrier making it difficult for glyphosate to enter the cell.

High seed production and dispersal capacity and glyphosate resistance are among the main factors that have made hairy fleabane (Conyza bonariensis) one of the most important and dispersed weeds in the world. Herbicide-resistant weeds populations may have fitness cost due to molecular, physiological, and biochemical changes. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological quality of seeds of Conyza spp. and determine whether glyphosate resistance causes fitness costs for resistant biotypes. Seeds from six hairy fleabane biotypes, three glyphosate-resistant and three -sensitive, with a resistance factor average of 11.7 were studied. Among the studied biotypes, five were identified as C. bonariensis and one as C. blakei. Seed analyses were performed in a completely randomized design with ten replications of 100 seeds each (1,000 seeds per biotype). The analyzed seeds were originated from second-generation self-pollinating plants with known segregation rate. The mean results indicate that, in relation to sglyphosate-sensitive biotypes of C. bonariensis, seeds from -resistant biotypes showed a 16% reduction in vigor and 13% in germination, a 44% increase in the number of empty seeds and approximately five times more viable dormant seeds. The lower physiological quality of glyphosateresistant hairy fleabane seeds regarding to -sensitive indicates that resistance affect the seed’s physiology and causes a fitness costs. It implies a reduction of invasive potential and persistence in the environment of resistant biotypes. Therefore, in the absence of glyphosate as a selective factor, the frequency of resistant biotypes tends to decrease and increase the predominancy of glyphosate-sensitivre biotypes. However, the highest number of viable dormant seeds of resistant biotypes supplies the soil seed bank. All biotypes of C. bonariensis showed higher physiological quality of seeds when compared to C. blakei, indicating that the first species is more adaptably evolved for survival in agricultural and disturbed areas. RESUMO - A alta capacidade de produção e dispersão de sementes e a resistência ao glyphosate estão entre os principais fatores que tornaram a buva (Conyza bonariensis) uma das mais importantes e dispersas plantas daninhas no mundo. Populações de plantas resistentes a herbicidas podem apresentar penalidades em função das alterações moleculares, fisiológicas e bioquímicas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de biótipos de Conyza spp. e determinar se a resistência ao glyphosate causa penalidades aos biótipos resistentes. Foram avaliadas sementes de seis biótipos de buva, sendo três resistentes e três sensíveis ao glyphosate, com fator de resistência de 11,7. Entre os biótipos estudados, cinco foram identificados como C. bonariensis e um como C. blakei. As análises das sementes foram realizadas no delineamento completamente casualizado com dez repetições de 100 sementes cada (1.000 sementes por biótipo). As sementes utilizadas nas análises foram originadas de plantas de segunda geração de autopolinização com taxa de segregação conhecida. Os resultados médios indicam que, em relação aos biótipos sensíveis de C. bonariensis, as sementes dos biótipos resistentes apresentaram redução de 16% no vigor e 13% na germinação, aumento de 44% no número de sementes vazias e em torno de cinco vezes mais sementes dormentes viáveis. A menor qualidade fisiológica de sementes da buva resistente ao glyphosate indica que a resistência causa penalidade. Essa penalidade implica redução do potencial invasivo e persistência no ambiente dos biótipos resistentes. Assim, na ausência do fator seletivo glyphosate, a frequência de biótipos resistentes tende a diminuir e retornar a suscetibilidade. Entretanto, o maior número de sementes dormentes viáveis dos biótipos resistentes abastece o banco de sementes do solo. Todos os biótipos de C. bonariensis apresentaram maior qualidade fisiológica das sementes em comparação ao biótipo de C. blakei, indicando que a primeira espécie é mais evoluída do ponto de vista adaptativo para sobrevivência em áreas agrícolas. Biochemical assays in a time-course were employed to evaluate stresses induced by glyphosate treatment in resistant and sensitive biotypes of Conyza bonariensis. Two experiments were conducted assessing glyphosate doses and time-course after treatment. The doses of glyphosate ranged from 0 to 11840 g ae·ha–1 and assessments performed until 552 h after glyphosate treatment (HAT). The objectives of this study were to evaluate the oxidative stress and differential antioxidant enzyme activity in glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive biotypes of hairy fleabane after glyphosate treatment. After treatment, both studied biotypes accumulated similar levels of shikimic-acid until 96 h. The sensitive biotype died at192 HAT. Shikimic-acid and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation in glyphosate-resistant biotype were transient and did not differ from untreated plants at 288 and 500 HAT, respectively. In both glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive biotypes, a correlation analysis established a cause-and-effect relationship after glyphosate treatment, which leads to shikimic-acid and hydrogen peroxide accumulation, lipid peroxidation (indicates tissue damage) and an enhancement in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) enzyme. However, in the glyphosate-resistant biotype, the oxidative stress and tissue damage were lower, and antioxidant enzyme activities SOD, CAT, and APX were higher than in the -sensitive biotype. It indicates that antioxidant enzyme in glyphosate-resistant biotype might be related to the glyphosate-resistance process in Conyza bonariensis. This study is the first report of differential antioxidant enzyme activity in hairy fleabane.

Ryegrass is an important weed in wheat cultivations due to the evolution of resistance to different mechanisms of action. This study aimed to compare the phenological development, fitness cost, and competitive ability between ryegrass biotypes susceptible and with multiple resistance to 5-enolpyruvylshikimate3-phosphate synthase (EPSPs) and acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibiting herbicides. Fitness cost and phenological development were evaluated from biotypes grown in pots, and morphological growth variables were determined up to 140 days after emergence. Phenological development was evaluated with a fitness cost. Competitive ability was determined in a replacement-series experiment with proportions of resistant and susceptible ryegrass. The tested proportions were 100:0 (pure resistant ryegrass stand), 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100% (pure susceptible ryegrass stand), where the number of tillers, height, leaf area, and shoot dry matter were evaluated at 50 days after emergence. The longer tillering period of resistant ryegrass was the main factor involved in the difference in phenological development between biotypes. The resistant biotype was superior to the susceptible regarding height, shoot dry matter, and absolute growth rate, while the susceptible biotype had a higher number of tillers and leaf area ratio. Thus, the resistant biotype had no fitness cost. For competitive ability, no difference was observed between biotypes in the different tested proportions when they occupied the same ecological niche. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar o desenvolvimento fenológico, custo adaptativo e habilidade competitiva entre biótipos de azevém suscetível e com resistência múltipla aos herbicidas inibidores da 5-enolpiruvilchiquimato-3-fosfato sintase (EPSPs) e acetolactato sintase (ALS). Para avaliar o custo adaptativo e o desenvolvimento fenológico, os biótipos foram cultivados em vasos, e as variáveis morfológicas de crescimento foram avaliadas até os 140 dias após a emergência. O desenvolvimento fenológico foi avaliado juntamente com o custo adaptativo. A habilidade competitiva foi determinada em experimento de série de substituição com proporções de azevém resistente e suscetível. As proporções testadas foram: 100:0 (estande puro de azevém resistente), 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 e 0:100% (estande puro de suscetível), onde o número de afilhos, a estatura, área foliar e massa seca da parte aérea foram avaliados aos 50 dias após a emergência. O maior período de afilhamento do azevém resistente é o principal fator envolvido na diferença do desenvolvimento fenológico entre os biótipos. O biótipo resistente é superior ao suscetível quanto a estatura (EP), massa seca da parte aérea (MSPA) e taxa de crescimento absoluto (TCA), enquanto o suscetível possui maior número de afilhos (NA) e razão de área foliar (RAF). Assim, o biótipo resistente não apresenta custo adaptativo. Para a habilidade competitiva, verificou-se que não há diferença entre os biótipos nas diferentes proporções testadas quando ocupam o mesmo nicho ecológico. Glyphosate-resistant hairy fleabane [Conyza bonariensis (L.) Cronq.] is one of the most important weeds in the world. Among the factors that make this weed species widely distributed in the most diverse environments is the high seed production capacity and dispersal. Hairy fleabane plants not controlled by herbicide application regrowth and overcome crop canopy, use environmental resources, interfere with crops, and complete their life cycle by producing thousands of seeds and replenishing the seed bank. Management strategies that reduce production and viability of hairy fleabane seeds can be adopted within the integrated management to reduce the seed bank and prevent further infestations. In this way, experiments were carried out in a greenhouse and laboratory of seed analysis to evaluate the effect of glyphosate (1,480 g a.e. ha-1) on the production and viability of glyphosate-resistant hairy fleabane seeds when applied at the vegetative and reproductive stages. Seed production was reduced by 68.4 and 100% when glyphosate was applied on hairy fleabane plants at the vegetative and early reproductive stages, respectively, regarding to the control. The viability of hairy fleabane seeds was not influenced by treatments at the evaluated stages. However, glyphosate treatment reduced the hairy fleabane seed production when applied at the vegetative stage . Hairy fleabane seed production is not feasible when glyphosate is applied at the early reproductive stage. RESUMO: A buva [Conyza bonariensis (L.) Cronq.] resistente ao glyphosate é uma das principais plantas daninhas do mundo. Um dos fatores que fazem com que esta planta esteja amplamente distribuída nos mais diversos ambientes é sua alta capacidade de produção e dispersão de sementes. Plantas de buva não controladas pela aplicação de herbicidas rebrotam e sobressaem-se ao dossel da cultura, se beneficiam dos recursos do ambiente, interferem com as culturas, completam seu ciclo produzindo milhares de sementes e realimentando o banco de sementes. Estratégias de manejo que reduzam a produção e viabilidade de sementes de buva podem ser adotadas dentro do manejo integrado, a fim de o banco de sementes e prevenir futuras infestações. Foram realizados experimentos em casa de vegetação e em laboratório de análise de sementes com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da aplicação de glyphosate nos estádios vegetativo e reprodutivo na produção e viabilidade de sementes de buva resistente ao glyphosate (1.480 g e.a. ha-1). Os resultados demonstram que a produção de sementes reduziu em 68,4% e 100% quando o glyphosate foi aplicado em plantas de buva nos estádios vegetativo e início do reprodutivo, respectivamente, em relação a plantas não tratadas. A viabilidade das sementes de buva não foi influenciada pelos tratamentos nos estádios avaliados. Entretanto, a aplicação do glyphosate no estádio vegetativo da buva reduz a produção de sementes. A produção de sementes de buva é inviabilizada quando o glyphosate é aplicado no início do estádio reprodutivo.

Glyphosate-resistant (GR) Italian ryegrass (LOLMU) and Alexandergrass (URPLA) are troublesome weeds in corn cropping systems in Southern Brazil. The emergence pattern of those weeds is not uniform and may change according to the season’s environmental characteristics. Also, herbicide resistance has been diminishing the success of the weed control programs. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the influence of corn-sowing date on LOLMU and URPLA densities and their control provided by pre- and post-emergent herbicides. Field trials were conducted in two crop seasons in Southern Brazil consisting of three corn sowing date (August, September, and October) and the application of atrazine + S-metolachlor (residual) in corn pre-emergence in different post-emergence weed control programs with glyphosate, ammonium-glufosinate, nicosulfuron, and atrazine. The results indicated that the sowing date had a significant influence on LOLMU and URPLA densities. Corn sown in the earliest period was exposed to a higher LOLMU density, whereas corn sown in the latest period had a higher density of URPLA. Also, the application of residual herbicide at corn pre-emergence reduced both weed species densities and decreased the pressure for the control of glyphosate-resistant LOLMU for the post-emergence herbicides. The use of residual herbicides in corn pre-emergence is an efficient strategy to be considered in the LOLMU and URPLA control programs, followed by post-emergence application of glyphosate, ammonium-glufosinate, atrazine, and nicosulfuron.

Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is a grass weed found in winter cereals, with several glyphosate-resistant diploid populations. Furthermore, the use of Italian ryegrass tetraploid genotypes creates an opportunity to increase the forage demand in replacement of diploid populations. The aim of this research was to evaluate the crossing capacity between glyphosate-resistant diploid and tetraploid Italian ryegrass to transfer glyphosate resistance to the next generation. Reciprocal crosses were performed using the susceptible tetraploid cultivar INIA Titan and resistant diploid (SVA04 biotype) plants to obtain the F1 progeny. Germination testing, survival percentage, inheritance of glyphosate-resistance, and ploidy level were evaluated in F1 progeny. Crossing of susceptible tetraploid plants ♂ and glyphosate-resistant diploid ♀ affected the germination and exhibited 4.5% of triploid plants. F1 progeny from the glyphosate-resistant diploid ♂ and susceptible tetraploid ♀ did not show germination problems, but 46% of the plants died during the initial seedling stage. For this progeny, 10 and 25% of the seedlings were composed of triploid and pentaploid individuals, respectively. Crosses between susceptible tetraploid ♀ and resistant diploid ♂ did not transfer the glyphosate-resistant for the plants. Susceptible tetraploid ♂ crossing with diploid resistant ♀ had a reduction of 47% the glyphosate-resistant plants compared to the homozygous glyphosate-resistant progeny. Overall, tetraploid Italian ryegrass can be a safe tool to reduce and manage the increase of glyphosate-resistant diploid ryegrass in field conditions.

The goals of this study were to evaluate herbicide application rates at different timings for preharvest desiccation of wheat (Trial 1), as well as to evaluate the effect of the timing of herbicide desiccation at preharvest and harvest timing (Trial 2) on yield, germination, and herbicide residue in wheat seed. In Trial 1, treatments consisted of two application rates of glufosinate, glyphosate, paraquat, or paraquat+diuron and a control without application; application time periods were in the milk grain to early dough stage, soft dough to hard dough stage, and hard dough stage. In Trial 2, treatments consisted of different application time periods (milk grain to early dough stage, and soft dough to hard dough stage), different herbicides (glufosinate, 2,4-D+glyphosate, and untreated control), and different harvest times (5, 10 and 15 days after herbicide application). One thousand seeds weight, yield, first and final germination count, and herbicide residue on seeds were evaluated. Preharvest desiccation with paraquat, glufosinate, and 2,4-D+glyphosate at the milk grain to early dough stage reduces wheat yield. Regardless of the herbicide and application rate, application in the milk grain to early dough stage and soft dough to hard dough stage provides greater germination of wheat seeds, except at the lower dose of paraquat. Systemic herbicides accumulate more in wheat seeds. Resumo: Os objetivos foram avaliar doses de herbicidas em diferentes épocas de dessecação pré-colheita do trigo (Experimento 1); e, o efeito de herbicidas em diferentes épocas de dessecação pré-colheita e épocas de colheita (Experimento 2) sobre a produtividade, germinação e resíduos de herbicidas em sementes de trigo. No experimento 1, os tratamentos foram: duas doses e testemunha sem aplicação dos herbicidas glufosinate, glyphosate, paraquat, paraquat+diuron; e, as épocas de aplicação foram: grão leitoso a pastoso, grão pastoso a farináceo e grão farináceo duro. No experimento 2, os tratamentos foram as épocas de aplicação: grão leitoso a pastoso e grão pastoso a farináceo; os herbicidas: glufosinate, 2,4-D+glyphosate e testemunha sem aplicação; e, as épocas de colheitas: 5, 10 e 15 dias após aplicação. Avaliaram-se massa de mil sementes, produtividade, primeira e contagem final da germinação e resíduo dos herbicidas nas sementes. A dessecação pré-colheita com paraquat, glufosinate e 2,4-D+glyphosate em estádio de grão leitoso a pastoso reduz a produtividade do trigo. Independente do herbicida e dose, aplicação em estádio de grão leitoso a pastoso e grão pastoso a farináceo proporciona maior germinação de sementes de trigo, exceto a menor dose de paraquat. Herbicidas sistêmicos acumulam-se mais nas sementes de trigo.

Herbicide resistance can confer lower competitive abilities; however scarse information is available about the photosynthetic performance between glyphosate-resistant and -susceptible hairy fleabane biotypes coming from areas with similar weed management history. Thus, the goal was to evaluate the photosynthetic performance under different light intensities between glyphosate-resistant and -susceptible hairy fleabane biotypes, from RR soybean fields with a similar weed management history. The tested factors were glyphosate resistant and susceptible biotypes and 12 levels of photosynthetic photon flux density. Plants were cultivated in plastic cups, and at the stage of 10-12 leaves they were subjected to treatments with artificial lighting systems. The net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, substomatal CO2 concentration, transpiration rate, instantaneous water use efficiency, light compensation point and quantum yield were evaluated. In all the evaluated photosynthetic parameters, biotype R showed superior characteristics compared to susceptible biotypes, with the exception of the transpiration rate, where there were no differences. The differences between biotypes may not be associated to glyphosate resistance or susceptibility, but to the evolutionary characteristics of the biotypes. RESUMO: A resistência a herbicidas pode conferir menor capacidade competitiva, porém limitadas informações estão disponíveis sobre o desempenho fotossintético entre biótipos resistentes e suscetíveis ao glyphosate provenientes de área com similar histórico no manejo de plantas daninhas. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho fotossintético sob diferentes intensidades luminosas entre biótipos de buva resistente e suscetível ao glyphosate, oriundos de área de lavoura de soja Roundup Ready® com histórico similar de manejo de plantas daninhas. Os fatores testados foram biótipos resistentes e suscetíveis ao glyphosate e 12 níveis de densidade de fluxo de fótons fotossintéticos. As plantas foram cultivadas em copos plásticos e, no estádio de 10-12 folhas submetidas ao tratamento com sistema de luz artificial. Foram avaliados taxa fotossintética líquida, condutância estomática, concentração de CO2 subestomática, taxa transpiratória, eficiência instantânea do uso da água, ponto de compensação de luz e rendimento quântico. Em todos os parâmetros fotossintéticos avaliados, o biótipo R apresentou características superiores comparado ao biótipo suscetível, com exceção da taxa transpiratória, em que não houve diferenças. As diferenças entre biótipos podem não estar associadas à resistência ou suscetibilidade ao glyphosate, e sim às características evolutivas dos biótipos.

The goosegrass (Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn) is an annual plant that has a low-level resistance to glyphosate (LLRG), resulting in control failure in genetically modified soybean crops for resistance to this herbicide. Alleles related to resistance may cause changes in the plant biotype, such as inferior competitive ability. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluated the competitive ability of soybean crops and susceptible and resistant (LLRG) goosegrass biotypes. Replacement series experiments were conducted with soybean crops and goosegrass biotypes. The ratios of soybean to susceptible or resistant (LLRG) goosegrass plants were 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100, with a total population of 481 plants m-2. The leaf area, plant height and shoot dry weight were evaluated at 40 days after emergence of the soybean crops and weeds. The soybean crop had superior competitive ability to the susceptible and resistant (LLRG) goosegrass biotypes. The soybean crop showed similar competitive ability in both competitions, either with the susceptible or resistant (LLRG) goosegrass biotypes. The intraspecific competition was more harmful to the soybean crop, while the interspecific competition caused greater damage to the goosegrass biotypes competing with the soybean crop. RESUMO O capim pé-de-galinha (Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn) é uma planta anual, que apresenta resistência de nível baixo (RNB) ao herbicida glifosato o que acarreta em falhas de controle em lavouras de soja geneticamente modificadas para resistência ao herbicida. Os alelos relacionados com a resistência podem acarretar em custos de adaptação ao biótipo, conferindo menor habilidade competitiva. Diante disso, o objetivo da pesquisa foi comparar a habilidade competitiva da cultura da soja com os biótipos de capim pé -de-galinha suscetível ou com RNB. Para isso, foram conduzidos experimentos em série de substituição entre a cultura da soja e os biótipos de capim pé-de-galinha. As proporções entre plantas de soja e capim pé-de-galinha suscetível ou com RNB foram de 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 e 0:100, com população total de 481 plantas m -2. Avaliaram-se a área foliar (AF), estatura de planta (EST) e a massa da matéria seca da parte aérea (MMSPA), aos 40 DAE da cultura da soja e da planta daninha. A cultura da soja tem habilidade competitiva superior aos biótipos de capim pé-de-galinha suscetível ou com RNB. A habilidade competitiva da soja não foi diferencial frente à competição com os biótipos de capim pé-de-galinha suscetível ou com RNB. A competição intraespecífica para a cultura da soja e a competição interespecífica para os biótipos de capim pé-de-galinha, causam maiores danos aos competidores.

The objective of this work was to compare wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla) biotypes as to their morphological characteristics, as well as to determine their genetic similarity in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and to confront the light compensation point of susceptible biotypes and of biotypes with low-resistance level to glyphosate. Besides the morphology analysis, the study included the genetic characterization, by AFLP, of susceptible (GR50= 58.65 g ha-1 a.e.) biotypes and of biotypes with low resistance (GR50= 310.36 g ha-1 a.e.) to glyphosate. The competitive ability of the biotypes was inferred according to their light compensation point. The observed morphological characteristics do not allow to differentiate biotypes as to their geographical location, or their resistance level to glyphosate. The genetic analysis identified low genetic diversity among the 15 tested biotypes, with a large amount of subgroups. The biotypes with low resistance formed an isolated group. The susceptible biotypes showed the lowest values of light compensation point and, possibly, they have a greater competitive ability under low-luminosity conditions. The evaluated characteristics do not enable to differentiate genotypes with different levels of glyphosate resistance. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar biótipos de leiteira (Euphorbia heterophylla) quanto a suas características morfológicas, assim como determinar sua similaridade genética no Rio Grande do Sul e confrontar o ponto de compensação de luz de biótipos suscetíveis e com baixa resistência ao glifosato. Além da análise morfológica, o estudo incluiu a caracterização genética, por meio de AFLP, dos biótipos suscetíveis (GR50= 58,65 g ha-1 e.a.) e dos biótipos com baixa resistência (GR50= 310,36 g ha-1 e.a.) ao glifosato. A habilidade competitiva dos biótipos foi inferida por meio de seus pontos de compensação de luz. As características morfológicas observadas não permitem diferenciar os biótipos quanto à localização geográfica ou ao grau de resistência ao glifosato. A análise genética identificou baixa diversidade genética entre os 15 biótipos de leiteira testados, com formação de elevado número de subgrupos. Os biótipos com baixa resistência formaram um grupo isolado. Os biótipos suscetíveis apresentaram os menores valores de ponto de compensação de luz e, possivelmente, têm maior habilidade competitiva em condições de baixa luminosidade. As características avaliadas não permitem diferenciar os genótipos com diferentes níveis de resistência ao glifosato.

In the State of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Southern Brazil, glyphosate has not been capable of controlling wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla L.) in soybean fields, thus, suggesting resistance to this herbicide. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating sensitivity of wild poinsettia biotypes to glyphosate, identifying the occurrence of resistance of wild poinsettia to the herbicide in RS state and determining the resistance factor of wild poinsettia biotypes under suspicion, besides assessing other herbicides as alternative controls. Two greenhouse experiments, which lasted two years, were conducted by a completely randomized design with four replications. Six biotypes (Factor A) and eight doses of glyphosate (Factor B) were used for getting the dose-response curve. Regarding the alternative control, post-emergence herbicides for soybean and corn crops were tested. Control and dry mass of the shoot were analyzed as variables. Resistance factors of resistant biotypes 20.2 and 21.1 were 4.83 and 5.29, respectively, by comparison with the susceptible biotype (11.4). In RS state, there has currently been high selection pressure due to the intensive use of glyphosate against wild poinsettia plants, as the result of the occurrence of biotypes 20.2 and 21.1 which have low levels of resistance to glyphosate and very little control by ALS-inhibiting herbicides. Therefore, an alternative to mitigate the problem is the use of herbicides with different mechanisms of action. As falhas de controle de leiteira (Euphorbia heterophylla L.) após aplicação de glyphosate em lavouras de soja do Rio Grande do Sul (RS) são frequentes, sugerindo a resistência ao herbicida. Diante disso, os objetivos foram avaliar a sensibilidade de biótipos de leiteira ao herbicida glyphosate, identificar a ocorrência da resistência, determinar o fator de resistência de biótipos de leiteira com suspeita de resistência e avaliar herbicidas alternativos para o seu controle. Foram conduzidos dois experimentos em casa de vegetação, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições ambos realizados em dois anos. No experimento de curva dose-resposta foram utilizados cinco biótipos (fator A) e oito doses do herbicida glyphosate (fator B). Para o controle alternativo, foram testados herbicidas em pós emergência das culturas de soja e milho. As variáveis analisadas foram controle e massa seca da parte aérea. O fator de resistência dos biótipos resistentes (20.2 e 21.1) foram 4,83 e 5,29 comparativamente ao biótipo suscetível (11.4) respectivamente. Existe elevada pressão de seleção pelo glyphosate em plantas de leiteira no RS, observando-se a ocorrência de biótipos 20.2 e 21.1 com resistência de nível baixo ao herbicida e com controle reduzido pelos herbicidas inibidores de ALS. Portanto, uma alternativa para atenuar o problema é o uso de herbicidas com diferentes mecanismos de ação.

The hairy fleabane ( Conyza bonariensis (L.) Cronq.) is among the most problematic glyphosate-resistant weeds to manage around the world. In weed science, molecular approaches such as RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) have been employed to study molecular responses to glyphosate treatment in Conyza species. Glyphosate treatment leads to reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in plants which could damage the RNA. Degraded RNA is an issue and can compromise further molecular analysis. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate whether glyphosate treatment interferes negatively on RNA integrity of glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive hairy fleabane biotypes. Two experiments were performed using glyphosate doses from 0 to 11,840 g a.e. ha-1 and evaluated in a time-course until 288 hours after treatment. The total of 86 RNA samples were evaluated. The RNA integrity was evaluated in a Bioanalyzer 2100 equipment according to RNA integrity number (RIN) scores and electrophoresis gel. The RIN scores ranged from 5.1 to 9.0. Glyphosate doses do not reduce the RIN scores in both glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive biotypes of hairy fleabane. Visual and automatic analysis of electrophoresis gel show suitable results for all RNA samples, with well-defined bands at 28S and 18S positions and no degradation. The results of the analysis indicate that glyphosate treatment does not affect the RNA integrity of glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive biotypes of hairy fleabane until 288 and 192 hours after glyphosate treatment, respectively. The RNA integrity analysis provides useful results to evaluate the RNA condition for further analysis. However, the costs were around US$ 14.25 per sample, considering only reagents. These results are useful for planning future time-course experiments in Conyza spp. after glyphosate treatment. RESUMO: A buva (Conyza bonariensis (L.) Cronq.) está entre as plantas daninhas resistentes ao glifosato mais difíceis de serem manejadas em todo o mundo. Na ciência das plantas daninhas, abordagens moleculares, como o sequenciamento de RNA (RNA-Seq) e a reação da transcriptase reversa da polimerase em tempo real (RT-qPCR), têm sido empregadas para estudar as respostas moleculares ao tratamento com glifosato em espécies de Conyza. No entanto, o tratamento com glifosato leva à produção de espécies reativas de oxigênio (ROS) em plantas, que podem danificar o RNA. A degradação do RNA é um problema e pode comprometer futuras análises moleculares. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar se o tratamento com glifosato interfere negativamente na integridade do RNA de biótipos de buva resistente e sensível ao glifosato. Dois experimentos foram realizados utilizando doses de glifosato de 0 a 11.840 g e.a. ha-1 e avaliados em um tempo de até 288 horas após o tratamento. O total de 86 amostras de RNA foram avaliadas. A integridade do RNA foi avaliada em um equipamento Bioanalyzer 2100 de acordo com escores de número de integridade de RNA (RIN) e em gel de eletroforese. Os escores do RIN variaram de 5,1 a 9,0. Doses de glifosato não reduziram os escores do RIN em biótipos de buva resistentes e sensíveis ao glifosato. A análise visual e automática do gel de eletroforese mostrou resultados adequados para todas as amostras de RNA, com bandas bem definidas nas posições 28S e 18S e sem degradação. Os resultados da análise indicam que o tratamento com glifosato não afeta negativamente a integridade do RNA dos biótipos resistentes e sensíveis ao glifosato da buva até 288 e 192 horas após o tratamento com glifosato, respectivamente. A análise da integridade do RNA fornece resultados úteis. Entretanto, os custos são altos e ficaram em torno de US $ 14,25 por amostra, considerando apenas os reagentes. Esses resultados são úteis para o planejamento de experimentos futuros em Conyza spp. após o tratamento com glifosato.

RESUMO – O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a eficacia de herbicidas pos-emergentes registrados para a cultura do milho, assim como futuras alternativas de controle quimico, no manejo de biotipos de capim-amargoso resistente ao glyphosate. Tres experimentos, em condicao de casa de vegetacao, foram realizados no delineamento de blocos ao caso, com tres repeticoes. Herbicidas de reconhecida eficiencia agronomica no controle de gramineas na cultura do milho (tembotrione, mesotrione e nicosulfuron) e futura alternativas de controle quimico (haloxyfop-p-methyl e ammonium-glufosinate) foram aplicados em diferentes periodos de desenvolvimento sobre o capim-amargoso. Foram avaliados os sintomas de intoxicacao e a porcentagem de reducao do acumulo da massa de materia seca (MMS) da infestante apos a ultima avaliacao de controle. Os herbicidas nicosulfuron, haloxyfop-p-methyl e ammonium-glufosinate ocasionaram a morte da planta independentemente do momento de aplicacao. Tembotrione e mesotrione, apesar de reduzirem a porcentagem de acumulo da MMS, nao ocasionaram morte das plantas. Conclui-se que o nicosulfuron se caracteriza como importante ferramenta no controle de capim-amargoso. As moleculas haloxyfop-p-methyl e ammonium-glufosinate apresentam potencial para serem utilizadas como alternativas de controle quimico da infestante. Os herbicidas tembotrione e mesotrione, apesar de reconhecida acao graminicida, nao sao indicados para o controle do capim-amargoso. ALTERNATIVES OF CHEMICAL CONTROL FOR SOURGRASS ( Digitaria insularis ) ON MAIZE CROP ABSTRACT – This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of registered herbicides for weed control in maize crop and to test future alternatives of chemical control for management of sourgrass biotypes resistant to glyphosate. Three experiments, in the greenhouse, were carried out in a randomized block design with three replicates. Herbicides of recognized agronomic efficiency in grass control on maize (tembotrione, mesotrione and nicossulfuron) and future alternatives of chemical control (haloxyfop-p-methyl e ammonium-glufosinate), as well as, standard herbicide treatment used on maize off-season glyphosate resistant (glyphosate + atrazine), were sprayed on sourgrass plants at different growth periods. The parameters evaluated were intoxication symptoms and the decrease in dry mass accumulation. The herbicides nicossulfuron, haloxyfop-p-methyl and ammonium-glufosinate caused the death of plants, regardless of their developmental stage. In spite of causing a decrease in weed dry mass accumulation, tembotrione and mesotrione did not cause plant death. It is concluded that nicossulfuron is characterized as an important tool in control of sourgrass. The molecules haloxyfop-p-methyl and ammonium-glufosinate have potential to be used as alternatives to control this infestant. The herbicides tembotrione and mesotrione despite recognized grass control were notindicated to control of sourgrass. Keywords: Zea mays , herbicide, resistance, weed.

The interference of glyphosate resistant hairy fleabane (Conyza bonariensis) has caused yield losses in soybean crop. Knowledge of the economic threshold is an important aspect for the economic management of resistant weeds. Because of it, the interference of the glyphosate resistant hairy fleabane density on the soybean yield loss was evaluated, as well as to estimate the economic threshold. Two experiments were conducted to verify the effect of different weed densities on the yield of two soybean cultivars (BRS Estância and BMX Turbo). Weed density ranged from 0 to 124 plants m-2. The yield of the BRS Estância decreased by 1.4% to the increase of one single plant, while for the BMX Turbo the loss was 25.9%. Soybean yield and economic threshold were lower for the BMX Turbo cultivar compared to the cultivar BRS Estância, which can be attributed to the genotype, competitive ability, weed development stage and/or environment. Increases in crop yield expectation, soybean price and herbicide efficiency reduce the economic threshold, indicating that the adoption of control measures should be taken when the weed density is low. Due to the high cost of hairy fleabane control, it is only feasible at high densities. RESUMO: A interferência de plantas de buva (Conyza bonariensis) resistente ao herbicida glyphosate tem causado perdas de produtividade na cultura da soja. O conhecimento do nível de dano econômico é um importante fator para o manejo econômico de plantas daninhas resistentes na cultura da soja. Para isso, foi avaliada a interferência da densidade de buva resistente ao glyphosate sobre a perda de rendimento da soja, bem como estimado o nível de dano econômico. Dois experimentos foram conduzidos para verificar o efeito de diferentes densidades da planta daninha sobre a produtividade de dois cultivares de soja (BRS Estância e BMX Turbo). As densidades de buva variaram de 0 a 124 plantas m-2. A produtividade do cultivar BRS Estância reduziu 1,4% ao aumento de uma planta, enquanto para o cultivar BMX Turbo a perda foi de 25,9%. A produtividade da soja e o nível de dano econômico foram menores para o cultivar BMX Turbo, em comparação com o cultivar BRS Estância, o que pode ser atribuído ao genótipo, à habilidade competitiva, ao estádio de desenvolvimento da buva e/ou a ambiente. Aumentos na expectativa de produtividade da cultura, no preço da soja e na eficiência dos herbicidas reduzem o nível de dano econômico, indicando que a adoção de medidas de controle deve ser tomada quando a população de buva é baixa. Em função do elevado custo de controle da buva, este somente é viável em altas densidades.

Ryegrass is a weed of annual cycle that is present in winter crops, in orchards and vineyards of the South region of Brazil. The species is normally controlled by the glyphosate herbicide, but the continuous use of this product caused the selection of resistant biotypes. The use of ACCase inhibitor herbicides is the main alternative for the control of this species, but it has not been satisfactory in some places, thus causing suspicion of resistance to this action mechanism. Thus, the objective of this paper was to evaluate the occurrence and geographic distribution of ryegrass biotypes that are resistant to the clethodim herbicide in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. For that, seeds of ryegrass plants that survived the application of clethodim were collected in crops from the north region of RS, summing up to a total of 152 samples from 72 cities. The biotypes were submitted to the application of 120 g i.a. ha-1 (maximum registered dose) and 60 g i.a. ha-1 de clethodim (half the maximum registered dose). According to the results, among the samples of ryegrass seeds collected, there were no biotypes resistant to the clethodim herbicide when the maximum registered dose was applied and in the stage of three to four leaves. However, there were biotypes with lower susceptibility that survived half the maximum registered dose. RESUMO O azevém é uma planta daninha de ciclo anual presente em lavouras de inverno, em pomares e vinhedos da região Sul do Brasil. A espécie normalmente é controlada pelo herbicida glyphosate, porém o uso continuado desse produto selecionou biótipos resistentes. O uso de herbicidas inibidores da ACCase é a principal alternativa para o controle dessa espécie, o qual não tem sido satisfatório em alguns locais, provocando a suspeita da ocorrência de resistência a esse mecanismo de ação. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a ocorrência e distribuição geográfica de biótipos de azevém resistente ao herbicida clethodim no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Para isso, sementes de plantas de azevém que sobreviveram a aplicações de clethodim foram coletadas em lavouras da região norte do RS, totalizando 152 amostras de 72 municípios. Os biótipos foram submetidos à aplicação de 120 g i.a. ha-1 (dose máxima de registro) e 60 g i.a. ha-1 de clethodim (metade da máxima dose de registro). De acordo com os resultados, entre a amostras de sementes de azevém coletadas não foram encontrados biótipos resistentes ao herbicida clethodim quando aplicada a máxima dose de registro e no estádio de três a quatro folhas. No entanto, observaram-se biótipos com menor suscetibilidade, que sobreviveram à metade da máxima dose de registro.

Conyza bonariensis (hairy fleabane) is one of the most problematic and widespread glyphosate-resistant weeds in the world. This highly competitive weed species significantly interferes with crop growth and substantially decreases crop yield. Despite its agricultural importance, the molecular mechanisms of glyphosate resistance are still unknown. The present RNA-Seq study was performed with the goal of identifying differentially expressed candidate transcripts (genes) related to metabolism-based non-target site glyphosate resistance in C. bonariensis. The whole-transcriptome was de novo assembled from glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive biotypes of C. bonariensis from Southern Brazil. The RNA was extracted from untreated and glyphosate-treated plants at several timepoints up to 288 h after treatment in both biotypes. The transcriptome assembly produced 90,124 contigs with an average length of 777 bp and N50 of 1118 bp. In response to glyphosate treatment, differential gene expression analysis was performed on glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive biotypes. A total of 9622 genes were differentially expressed as a response to glyphosate treatment in both biotypes, 4297 (44.6%) being up- and 5325 (55.4%) down-regulated. The resistant biotype presented 1770 up- and 2333 down-regulated genes while the sensitive biotype had 2335 and 2800 up- and down-regulated genes, respectively. Among them, 974 up- and 1290 down-regulated genes were co-expressed in both biotypes. In the present work, we identified 41 new candidate target genes from five families related to herbicide transport and metabolism: 19 ABC transporters, 10 CYP450s, one glutathione S-transferase (GST), five glycosyltransferases (GT), and six genes related to antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The candidate genes may participate in metabolic-based glyphosate resistance via oxidation, conjugation, transport, and degradation, plus antioxidation. One or more of these genes might &lsquo, rescue&rsquo, resistant plants from irreversible damage after glyphosate treatment. The 41 target genes we report in the present study may inform further functional genomics studies, including gene editing approaches to elucidate glyphosate-resistance mechanisms in C. bonariensis.

Chemical control with herbicides, especially glyphosate, is the main method used to control ryegrass. However, the repeated use of glyphosate has selected resistant ryegrass biotypes. Thus, the ACCase inhibitor herbicides have become the main alternative to control glyphosate-resistant biotypes, being widely used by farmers in Rio Grande do Sul. Repeated use of ACCase inhibitors, in turn, have selected ryegrass biotypes resistant to this herbicide mechanism. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the response of ryegrass biotypes to different clethodim rates by dose-response curves. Increasing doses (0, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 144 and 192 g a.i. ha-1) of the herbicide clethodim were applied at the 3-4 ryegrass leaf stage. The variables control at 14 and 28 days after treatment (DAT) and shoot dry weight were evaluated. The data were fitted by nonlinear regression log-logistic and C50 and GR50 were calculated based on the equation. The resistance factor was obtained by the ratio of C50 or GR50 of the resistant biotype by matching the susceptible biotype. Based on the equation parameters, the doses of GR50 64.7 and 234.5 g a.i. ha-1 clethodim and C50 11.2 and 172.1 g a.i. ha-1 clethodim were obtained, at 28 DAT for the susceptible and resistant biotypes, respectively. The ryegrass biotype denominated Cotril is resistant to clethodim, being controlled with a dose 15.3 times greater than that of the susceptible biotype, and a 50% reduction of this biotype occurs with a dose 3.62 times higher than that of the susceptible one.

The use of herbicides to anticipate harvesting in species with easy seed dehiscence may be an alternative to avoid maturation losses. However, the appropriate time for herbicide application is extremely important as it prevents the seeds from remaining in the field for long periods. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the application of maturing herbicides in two distinct seasons, and their effects on the physical, physiological, and sanitary quality of canola seeds. A randomized block experimental design arranged in a factorial scheme (herbicide x season + control) with four replications was used. Hybrid 50 canola plants were matured with the herbicides: glufosinate, paraquat, glyphosate, diquat, saflufenacil, 2,4-D, and paraquat + diuron twice during the crop cycle, G3 and G4, and two controls without application for each epoch, with the first being harvested the day of product application, and the second kept in the field until the final crop cycle. Analyses of one thousand seed weight, electrical conductivity, emergence speed index, and a sanity test were performed. The application of maturing herbicides to canola increases the one thousand seed weight and rate of emergence speed. At the same time, it increases electrical conductivity and the incidence of fungi. Plants that remained in the field until the end of the crop cycle and did not receive herbicide application resulted in higher quality seeds. The most appropriate moment to apply maturation herbicides to canola is in the G4 season.

The successive use of Roundup Ready crops may difficult the management of volunteer plants originated from seed losses during harvest. In soybean, volunteer corn plants can exhibit higher interference and cause reduce yield depending on their density. The aim of this study was to quantify the economic threshold level (ETL) in soybean as a function of the competition of volunteer corn and to evaluate the chemical control in different phenological stages of development. The ETL and chemical control experiments were conducted in the field, under completely randomized and randomized block designs with one and three replicates, respectively. The variables analyzed were yield and ETL as functions of the competition of different volunteer corn populations (control, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 24 and 32 plants m-2) and the chemical control with acetyl coenzyme-A carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitor herbicides alone or mixed with glyphosate in different phenological stages of development (V2-V3, V4-V5 and V6-V8) that were evaluated at seven, 14 and 21 days after application (DAA). The results showed higher competitive potential of volunteer corn in which the presence of one plant m-2 reduces the soybean yield in 17%. The ETL ranged from 0.14 to 0.78 plants m-2 and the control of volunteer corn must be carried out in low populations. The use of ACCase inhibitors herbicides alone or mixed with glyphosate demonstrated greater than 85% control in the V2-V3 phenological stage independent of the period evaluated. The effectiveness of all herbicides decreased with application delay with a control level above 87%, in the V6-V8 phenological stage, obtained only for fluazifop and haloxyfop herbicides alone or in mixed with glyphosate at 14 and 21 days after application. O uso sucessivo de culturas “Roundup Ready” pode dificultar o manejo de plantas voluntárias originadas de sementes perdidas durante a colheita. Na soja, plantas de milho voluntário podem apresentar elevadainterferência e causar redução da produtividade dependendo da sua densidade. O objetivo do estudo foi quantificar o nível de dano econômico (NDE) na soja em função da competição de milho voluntário e avaliar o controle químico em diferentes estádios fenológicos de desenvolvimento. Os experimentos de NDE e controle químico foram conduzidos a campo, em delineamento inteiramente e blocos casualizados com uma e três repetições, respectivamente. As variáveis analisadas foram a produtividade e o NDE em função da competição das diferentes populações de milho voluntário (zero; um; dois; quatro; seis; oito; 10; 12; 16; 20; 24 e 32 plantas m-²) e o controle químico com herbicidas inibidores da enzima acetil CoA carboxilase (ACCase) isolados ou misturados com o glifosato em diferentes estádios fenológicos de desenvolvimento (V2-V3; V4-V5 e V6-V8) que foram avaliados aos sete, 14 e 21 dias após a aplicação (DAA). Os resultados demonstraram maior potencial competitivo do milho voluntário onde a presença de uma planta m-2 reduziu a produtividade da soja em 17%. O NDE variou de 0,14 a 0,78 plantas m-2 e o controle do milho voluntário deve ser realizado em populações baixas. O uso de herbicidas inibidores da ACCase isolados ou misturados com o glifosato proporcionaram controle superior 85% no estádio fenológico V2-V3 independente do período avaliado. A eficácia de todos os herbicidas decresceu com o atraso da aplicação com um nível de controle acima de 87%, no estádio fenológico V6-V8, obtido apenas para os herbicidas fluazifope e haloxifope isolado ou em mistura com o glifosato aos 14 e 21 dias após aplicação.

Goosegrass (Eleusine indica) infests various crops, being reported as low-level resistant (LLR) to glyphosate. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the mechanisms of resistance to glyphosate in goosegrass by the cyt-P450 complex to identify changes in leaf anatomy of these plants and quantify the accumulation of shikimate in biotypes susceptible and with LLR. The metabolic rate was assessed by applying the cyt-P450 malathion inhibitor 30 minutes before the herbicide application. The analysis of the leaf anatomy consisted of a characterization of anatomic cross-sections and evaluation of the effect of glyphosate on the leaf epidermis and the conducting vessels. Plant tissue was collected 24 hours after treatment (HAT) of the dose-response curve to evaluate the accumulation of shikimate. The LLR biotype has not shown glyphosate metabolism by the early application of malathion due to the control of about 65% with or without applying the inhibitor. There is no anatomical evidence to determine the differential absorption of glyphosate by LLR biotypes. However, there is evidence of lower absorption and translocation of glyphosate in this biotype by lower stomatal density and a smaller diameter of the phloem. However, the LLR biotype presents diameter of phloem of 0.027 mm and stomatal density of 91.23 mm-2, values which are below the observed ones on the susceptible biotype. The susceptible biotype presents shikimate accumulation 17% higher compared to the biotype with LLR at a dose of 1,080 g e.a. ha-1, allowing to infer that the resistance mechanism is related to the enzyme insensitivity to the herbicide, which enables the use of appropriate management practices to control this weed. RESUMO O capim-pé-de-galinha (Eleusine indica) é infestante de diversos cultivos, sendo relatado como resistente de nível baixo (RNB) ao herbicida glyphosate. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar mecanismos de resistência de capim-pé-de-galinha ao glyphosate, por meio de metabolização do herbicida pelo complexo cyt-P450, alterações na anatomia foliar e acúmulo de chiquimato nos biótipos suscetível e com RNB. A metabolização foi avaliada mediante a aplicação do inibidor de cyt-P450 malathion 30 min antes do herbicida. A análise da anatomia foliar constou da caracterização de cortes anatômicos e avaliação do efeito do glyphosate na epiderme foliar e nos vasos condutores. Para avaliar o acúmulo de chiquimato, foi coletado tecido vegetal 24 horas após tratamento (HAT) da curva de dose-resposta. O biótipo RNB não evidenciou metabolismo do glyphosate pela aplicação prévia de malathion, não diferindo do tratamento somente com o herbicida. Não existem evidências anatômicas que determinem a absorção diferencial do herbicida glyphosate pelo biótipo RNB. Entretanto, o biótipo RNB apresentou diâmetro do floema de 0,027 mm e densidade de estômatos de 91,23 mm-2, valores inferiores aos observados no biótipo suscetível, levando a indícios de menor absorção e translocação de glyphosate nesse biótipo. O biótipo suscetível apresentou acúmulo de chiquimato 17% superior, comparado ao biótipo RNB, na dose de 1.080 g a.e. ha-1, permitindo inferir que o mecanismo de resistência seja relacionado à insensibilidade da enzima-alvo ao herbicida, o que possibilita o uso de práticas de manejo adequadas para o controle dessa planta daninha.

The Wild Poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla L.) has elevated potential to reduce the soybean yield and is a difficult to control plant due to herbicide resistance. The objectives of this study were to determine the changes in the photosynthetic physiological parameters, secondary metabolite levels, cellular damage, and antioxidant system activity in soybean plants and Wild Poinsettia biotypes with a low level of resistance or susceptibility to glyphosate in competition with soybeans. Two replacement series experiments were conducted in a greenhouse under competition between soybeans and the low-level resistant biotype (experiment I) or susceptible biotype (experiment II). The treatments consisted of different proportions of soybean plants and Wild Poinsettia [100:0 (pure stand of soybean), 50:50, and 0:100 (pure stand of Wild Poinsettia)] and different evaluation periods (the 2013/14 and 2014/15 growing seasons). The following parameters were analyzed: the chlorophyll, carotenoid (CRT), total phenol, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and lipid peroxidation levels and the catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activity. Generally, competition between the soybeans and the Wild Poinsettia biotypes did not alter the photosynthetic parameters or the photosynthetic pigment levels of the crop. For the weed biotypes, competition with the soybeans negatively affected photosynthesis. Greater losses of chlorophylls and CRTs were observed for the susceptible biotype when in competition with soybeans, whereas the opposite trend was observed for the biotype with a low level of resistance. No cellular damage or alterations in antioxidant system enzyme activity was observed, which indicated a lack of oxidative stress.

Nos Estados do Rio Grande do Sul e do Paraná, há frequentes relatos de falhas de controle de Conyza sumatrensis com chlorimuron-ethyl em lavouras de soja. Assim, os objetivos deste trabalho foram caracterizar morfologicamente as folhas de Conyza sumatrensis e avaliar o controle com herbicidas aplicados em biótipos dessa planta daninha em três estádios de desenvolvimento. Foram realizados dois estudos, com experimentos em casa de vegetação, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. No primeiro estudo, os biótipos de buva foram coletados e identificados; já no segundo estudo avaliou-se a resposta de biótipos aos herbicidas, doses e estádios de desenvolvimento. As doses de herbicidas foram: 0,0; 6,25; 12,5; 25; 50; 100; 200; e 400, representadas em porcentagem da dose de registro dos herbicidas chlorimuron-ethyl (20 g ha-1) e glyphosate (720 g e.a. ha-1), aplicadas de modo isolado ou associadas em três estádios de desenvolvimento dos quatro biótipos (2, 5, 17 e 20) de Conyza sumatrensis (altura de 0,5-1 cm e 3-4 folhas; altura 1-2 cm e 6-7 folhas; e altura de 10-12 cm e 12-14 folhas). As variáveis analisadas foram controle, fitomassa seca da parte aérea e as densidades tricomática e estomática da superfície foliar dos biótipos em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento. Os resultados demonstram que os estádios de desenvolvimento alteram a eficácia dos herbicidas, e aplicações em estádios avançados de desenvolvimento diminuem a eficácia de controle. A exceção foi o biótipo 5 de Conyza sumatrensis, que demonstrou resistência ao glyphosate, independentemente do estádio de desenvolvimento no momento da aplicação do herbicida. Houve variação no número de tricomas entre os biótipos em todos os estádios de desenvolvimento, e o número de estômatos diminuiu com o desenvolvimento dos biótipos. In the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná, there are frequent reports of failure to control Conyza sumatrensis with chlorimuron-ethyl in soybean crops. Thus, the objectives of this study were to characterize Conyza sumatrensis leaves morphologically and evaluate herbicide control in biotypes of this weed at three stages. Two studies were conducted, with experiments in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design with four replications. In the first study, horseweed biotypes were collected and identified, and the second study evaluated the responses of herbicide rates and development stages. The herbicide rates were: 0.0, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400, represented as a percentage of the dose registry of herbicides chlorimuronethyl (20 g ha-1) and glyphosate (720 g e.a. ha-1) applied in isolation or associated at three developmental stages of four Conyza sumatrensis (2, 5, 17 and 20) biotypes (height = 0.5-1 cm and 3-4 leaves, height = 1-2 cm and 6-7 leaves, height = 10-12 cm, 12-14 leaves). The variables analyzed were control, shoot dry weight and trichome and stomatal densities biotypes of the leaf surface at different stages of development. The results obtained demonstrate that the developmental stages affect the effectiveness of the herbicides, and applications at advanced stages of development decrease the effectiveness of control. The exception was biotype 5 of Conyza sumatrensis, which shows resistance to glyphosate, regardless of stage of development at the time of herbicide application. There was variation in the number of trichomes among biotypes at all stages of development, and the number of stomata decreased with the development of biotypes.

With the increase of glyphosate resistance evolution in hairy fleabane, the knowledge of genetic diversity is essential to assist in the weed management. The objective was to characterize the genetic diversity of glyphosate resistant Conyza species in Rio Grande do Sul. Hairy fleabane biotype seeds were collected in fields of glyphosate-resistant soybean, generating seedlings used for extracting DNA from the leaves to perform a genetic diversity analysis, using the RAPD technique. The DNA was used in polymerase chain reaction and DNA fragments were assessed for polymorphism bands in electrophoresis. Biotypes were identified as Conyza bonariensis and microcephala varieties. In molecular analysis, among 25 primers RAPD, eight were reproducible generating polymorphisms of high intensity for the separation of biotypes. Cluster analysis revealed five groups, which had a genetic similarity of 53%. The results indicate that all known biotypes are of the same species, but exhibit different varieties. RAPD presents itself as an important tool for characterizing Conyza species. RESUMO Com a evolução do aparecimento de casos de buva resistente ao glyphosate, o conhecimento da diversidade genética é importante para auxiliar no manejo dessa planta daninha. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar a diversidade genética de plantas de Conyza spp. resistentes ao glyphosate ocorrentes no Rio Grande do Sul. Foram coletadas sementes de biótipos de buva em áreas de cultivo de soja geneticamente modificada resistente ao glyphosate, das quais foi extraído DNA das folhas para análise de diversidade genética, utilizando-se a técnica de RAPD. O DNA foi usado na reação de polimerase em cadeia, e os fragmentos de DNA foram avaliados quanto ao polimorfismo das bandas em eletroforese. Os biótipos foram identificados como Conyza bonariensis variedades bonariensis e microcephala. Na análise molecular dos 25 primers testados, oito apresentaram polimorfismos reprodutíveis e de alta intensidade para a separação dos biótipos. A análise de agrupamento revelou cinco grupos, os quais apresentaram similaridade genética de 53%. Os resultados indicam que todos os biótipos identificados são da mesma espécie, porém apresentam variedade distinta. A técnica de RAPD apresenta-se como importante ferramenta para caracterização de espécies de Conyza.

The objective of this study was to determine changes in gas exchange and inhibition of EPSPs, based on the accumulation of shikimic acid in horseweed biotypes resistant and sensitive to glyphosate. Two experiments were conducted in a factorial model. The first one evaluated horseweed biotypes (one resistant and one susceptible to glyphosate), and herbicide rates (0 and 1,080 g a.e. ha ¹) applied on the weed. In the second experiment, the horseweed biotypes (susceptible and resistant to glyphosate) were evaluated in five periods as following: 0, 3, 7, 10, and 14 days after herbicide application (DAH). The photosynthetic rate, transpiration, carboxylation efficiency, and water efficiency were determined using an infrared gas analyzer (IRGA), and shikimic acid concentration by HPLC. The application of glyphosate damaged the photosynthetic parameters of the susceptible biotype, causing complete inhibition of the photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, carboxylation efficiency and water use efficiency, starting from the 7 DAH. On the other hand, total inhibition of the photosynthetic parameters was not observed for the resistant biotype. Shikimic acid accumulation occurred in both biotypes after glyphosate application but the susceptible biotype had the highest concentrations, indicating greater sensitivity of the enzyme EPSPs. The accumulation of shikimic acid in the resistant biotype indicates that the mechanism of resistance is not related to the total insensitivity of the enzyme EPSPs to glyphosate and/or that other resistance mechanisms may be involved.

RESUMO A buva (Conyza sumatrensis), uma das principais plantas daninhas já identificadas no sul do Brasil, vem apresentando controle insatisfatório, em resposta à aplicação dos herbicidas chlorimuron-ethyl e glyphosate. Por esta razão, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar herbicidas alternativos, visando ao controle de biótipos de C. sumatrensis, com resistência de nível baixo ao herbicida chlorimuron-ethyl e resistentes ao herbicida glyphosate. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação, entre abril e agosto de 2012, no município de Passo Fundo, RS. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições, sendo avaliados 15 tratamentos com herbicidas, além de uma testemunha sem aplicação. As variáveis consideradas foram controle percentual, aos 14, 21 e 28 dias após a aplicação dos tratamentos (DAT) e a matéria seca da parte aérea, aos 28 DAT. Como resultados, observou-se que os biótipos foram 100% controlados, aos 28 DAT, pelos tratamentos alternativos de paraquat + diuron; ammonium glufosinate; glyphosate + 2,4-D; glyphosate + ammonium glufosinate; 2,4-D; tembotrione e tembotrione + atrazine. O biótipo 17 evidenciou menor sensibilidade aos herbicidas inibidores da ALS e os biótipos 05, 17 e 20 não foram controlados pelo herbicida glyphosate. ABSTRACT Horseweed (Conyza sumatrensis), the major weed already identified in southern Brazil come presenting unsatisfactory control in response to application of herbicide chlorimuron-ethyl and glyphosate. In this context, the aim of this study was evaluating alternative herbicides for control of biotypes of C. sumatrensis with low-level resistance to the herbicide chlorimuron-ethyl and glyphosate-resistant. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, in a period during the interval April to August 2012, in Passo Fundo / RS. The experimental design was the completely randomized with four replications, with 15 herbicide treatments, plus an untreated control. The variables evaluated were percent control at 14, 21 and 28 days after treatment (DAT) and dry weight of shoot at 28 DAT. The results showed that the biotypes were 100% controlled at 28 DAT for alternative treatments of paraquat + diuron, ammonium glufosinate, glyphosate + 2,4-D, glyphosate and ammonium glufosinate; 2,4-D; tembotrione and tembotrione + atrazine. The biotype 17 showed less sensitivity to ALS-inhibiting herbicides, and biotypes 05, 17 and 20 were not controlled by glyphosate.

In the last growing seasons, goosegrass (Eleusine spp.) control failures have been observed following application of glyphosate on Roundup Ready® soybean in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) - Brazil, suggesting this species' resistance to the herbicide. Thus, the objectives of this study were to identify the occurrence of goosegrass resistance to the herbicide glyphosate in RS; and to determine the predominant species of the genus Eleusine, as well as the LD50 and GR50 of the suspected resistant biotypes. Two experiments were conducted under greenhouse conditions: one to identify the biotypes resistant to glyphosate, and the other, a dose-response curve experiment, as well as a study of the botanical characteristics of the species. In the first experiment, 39 biotypes were tested, mainly Eleusine indica, collected with suspected resistance to glyphosate. The glyphosate dose was 2,160 g e.a. ha-1, and the control was evaluated at 28 days after treatment. All biotypes were effectively controlled,with the biotypes from the municipality of Boa Vista do Incra showing greater tolerance. Two biotypes suspected of resistance (12.1 and 12.3) and a susceptible biotype in a dose-response experiment were tested at the following doses: 0, 135, 270, 540, 1,080, 1,620, and 2,160 g e.a. ha-1. The results of this experiment showed that biotype 12.1 does not present resistance to glyphosate and biotype 12.3 has a low level resistance since it is effectively controlled by the herbicide at the maximum dose. Nas últimas estações de cultivo têm-se observado falhas de controle de capim-pé-de-galinha (Eleusine spp.), em resposta à aplicação de glyphosate, em lavouras de soja Roundup Ready® no Rio Grande do Sul (RS), sugerindo a resistência da espécie. Diante disso, os objetivos deste trabalho foram identificar a ocorrência da resistência de capim-pé-de-galinha ao herbicida glyphosate no RS, determinar a (s) espécie (s) do gênero Eleusine e determinar a DL50 e GR50 dos biótipos com suspeita de resistência ao glyphosate. Foram realizados dois experimentos em casa de vegetação, sendo um de identificação de biótipos resistentes ao glyphosate e outro de curva de dose-resposta ao herbicida, além de estudo de caracterização botânica da (s) espécie (s). No experimento de identificação da resistência foram avaliados 39 biótipos, com predominância de Eleusine indica, coletados em áreas com suspeita de resistência ao glyphosate. A dose de glyphosate utilizada foi de 2.160 g e.a. ha-1, sendo avaliado o controle aos 28 dias após o tratamento. Todos os biótipos foram eficientemente controlados, porém aqueles oriundos do município de Boa Vista do Incra evidenciaram maior tolerância. A partir desse resultado, testaram-se dois biótipos com suspeita de resistência (12.1 e 12.3) e em biótipo suscetível em experimento de curva de dose-resposta ao glyphosate, sendo as doses de 0, 135, 270, 540, 1.080, 1.620 e 2.160 g e.a. ha-1. Os resultados apontaram que o biótipo 12.1 não apresenta resistência ao glyphosate e o biótipo 12.3 mostra resistência de nível baixo, sendo eficientemente controlado por glyphosate na dose máxima de registro.

Foram avaliadas neste trabalho a absorção foliar e a translocação do glyphosate por biótipos de azevém (Lolium multiflorum) sensíveis e resistentes a esse herbicida. Para isso, aplicou-se 14C-glyphosate utilizando-se uma microsseringa de precisão, adicionando-se 10 µL da calda sobre a face adaxial da primeira folha com lígula totalmente visível, quando as plantas de azevém se apresentavam com três perfilhos. A quantidade de glyphosate absorvido e translocado foi avaliada em intervalos de tempo (2, 4, 8, 16, 32 e 64 horas após a aplicação), por meio da medição da radiação emitida pelo 14C-glyphosate, em espectrômetro de cintilação líquida. Foram analisadas a parte aérea e as raízes, bem como a folha onde foi feita a aplicação e a solução de lavagem desta folha. A velocidade de absorção do glyphosate foi semelhante em ambos os biótipos de azevém, observando-se mais de 50% de absorção desse herbicida nas primeiras oito horas após a aplicação. Maior retenção de glyphosate foi observada na folha tratada do biótipo resistente: 81,64% do total de glyphosate absorvido até as 64 horas. No biótipo sensível esse valor foi de 55% no mesmo período. No restante da parte aérea e nas raízes, a maior quantidade do glyphosate absorvido foi encontrada no biótipo sensível, mostrando sua maior capacidade de translocação. Após 64 horas da aplicação do glyphosate, apenas 6%, em média, do glyphosate se encontrava nas plantas, indicando que a maior parte do produto pode ter sido exsudada. Conclui-se que a sensibilidade do azevém ao glyphosate pode ser atribuída à maior capacidade de translocação desse herbicida pelo biótipo sensível. This work evaluated foliar absorption and glyphosate translocation in Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) susceptible and resistant biotypes, 14C-glyphosate was applied by using a precision micro syringe, and adding 10 µL of solution on the adaxial side of the first leaf with ligule totally visible, when Italian ryegrass plants showed 3 tillers. The quantity of glyphosate absorbed and translocated was evaluated through a liquid scintilation spectrometer by measuring radiation emitted by 14C-glyphosate at 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 hours after application. The roots and aerial part were analyzed as well as the leaf where application was performed and the solution used to wash the leaf. Glyphosate absorption speed was similar in both Italian ryegrass biotypes, with over 50% of herbicide absorption in the first 8 hours after application. Up to 64 hours, higher retention (81.64%)of glyphosate was observed in the resistant biotype, while only 55% was retained in the susceptible biotype. In the remaining aerial part and roots, a higher amount of glyphosate was absorbed by the susceptible biotype, indicating higher capacity of its translocation. After 64 hours of application, only 6%, of glyphosate was found in the plants, on average indicating that most of the product could be exuded. It could be concluded that Italian ryegrass sensitivity to glyphosate can be attributed to higher translocation capacity of this herbicide by susceptible biotypes.

Objetivou-se neste estudo avaliar a translocação de glyphosate em plantas tolerantes (Ipomoea nil, Tridax procumbens e Spermacoce latifolia) e suscetível (Bidens pilosa) a esse herbicida. As avaliações de absorção e translocação do 14C-glyphosate em I. nil e B. pilosa foram efetuadas às 6, 12, 36 e 72 horas após a aplicação do herbicida (HAT), e em T. procumbens e S. latifolia, às 72 HAT. As plantas foram coletadas e fracionadas em: folha de aplicação, demais folhas, caules e raízes; em T. procumbens e S. latifolia, avaliou-se a presença do produto na inflorescência da planta. Em S. latifolia, aproximadamente 88% do glyphosate permaneceu na folha de aplicação, e pequena quantidade translocou para as raízes. Todavia, em T. procumbens, 75% do herbicida permaneceu na folha que recebeu a aplicação, observando-se maior translocação na inflorescência em relação às raízes. Conclui-se que a menor translocação do glyphosate observada em S. latifolia e T. procumbens pode ser um dos fatores responsáveis pela maior tolerância dessas espécies ao herbicida, ao passo que em I. nil a metabolização, a exsudação radicular ou a compartimentalização podem favorecer a tolerância, já que grande quantidade do produto atingiu as raízes da espécie. The objective of this study was to evaluate glyphosate translocation in glyphosate-tolerant weed species (I. nil, T. procumbens and S. latifolia) compared to glyphosate-susceptible species (B. pilosa). The evaluations of 14C-glyphosate absorption and translocation were performed at 6, 12, 36 and 72 hours after treatment (HAT) in I. nil and B. pilosa, and only at 72 HAT in the species T. procumbens and S. latifolia. The plants were collected and fractionated into application leaf, other leaves, stems, and roots. In S. latifolia, approximately 88% of the glyphosate remained in the application leaf and a small amount was translocated to roots at 72 HAT. However, 75% of the herbicide applied on T. procumbens remained in the leaf that had received the treatment, with greater glyphosate translocation to the floral bud. It was concluded that the smaller amount of glyphosate observed in S. latifolia and T. procumbens may partly account for their higher tolerance to glyphosate. However, I. nil tolerance to glyphosate may be associated with other factors such as metabolization, root exudation or compartmentalization, because a large amount of the herbicide reached the roots of this species.

Weed competition in the soybean causes changes in morphological and physiological characteristics that reduce the competitive ability of the crop. The objective of this study was to determine the control periods and coexistence of glyphosate-resistant hairy fleabane and its interference in morphological and photosynthetic variables and RR soybean yield. A field experiment was conducted during the 2011/2012 growing season, the treatments consisted of weed interference and weed free periods of the glyphosate-resistant hairy fleabane with soybean (BRS Estância RR). The periods were 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 and 154 days after the soybean emergence. The results sugested no differences between the control periods for the variables evaluated. The increase interference period of the weed reduced growth, development and the photosynthetic variables in the soybean. There are positive correlations between morphological and photosynthetic variables of soybean during the weed interference. The period before the glyphosate-resistant hairy fleabane interference in the soybean crop is 24 days for plants established before the crop sowing. A convivência de plantas daninhas à soja altera características morfofisiológicas que comprometem a habilidade competitiva dessa cultura. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar os períodos de controle e de convivência de buva resistente ao herbicida glifosato e sua interferência em variáveis morfológicas e fotossintéticas e produtividade da cultura da soja RR. Experimento a campo foi conduzido no ano agrícola 2011/2012, no qual foram testados períodos de controle e de convivência da buva resistente ao glifosato com a cultura da soja (BRS Estância RR). Os períodos de controle e convivência foram 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 e 154 dias após a emergência da cultura. Os resultados demonstraram que não houve diferenças entre os períodos de controle para as variáveis avaliadas. O aumento do período de convivência da planta daninha prejudicou o crescimento, desenvolvimento e as variáveis fotossintéticas da cultura. As variáveis morfológicas da soja correlacionam-se positivamente com as variáveis fotossintéticas mensuradas durante o período de convivência da buva com a soja. O período anterior à interferência da buva resistente ao glifosato na cultura da soja é de 24 dias para plantas estabelecidas antes da semeadura da cultura.

A resistência de biótipos de azevém ao herbicida glyphosate está alterando o manejo da vegetação de cobertura do solo em pomares de maçã. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a dose de glyphosate necessária para reduzir 50% do acúmulo de matéria seca (GR50), a resposta do biótipo resistente e sensível a herbicidas graminicidas e o acúmulo de matéria seca destes biótipos durante o ciclo. Para isso, foram conduzidos três experimentos. No primeiro, os tratamentos constaram de doses crescentes de glyphosate aplicadas sobre plantas dos biótipos resistente e sensível para determinar o GR50. No segundo experimento, os tratamentos constaram de doses dos herbicidas glyphosate, haloxyfop-r, diclofop, fluazifop-p, fenoxaprop-p e paraquat. No terceiro experimento, sementes dos biótipos resistente e sensível foram semeadas em recipientes com capacidade para 10 L e as plantas originadas delas foram colhidas quinzenalmente, para determinação da matéria seca da parte aérea, radicular e total. Como resultados, foi obtido GR50 de 287,5 e de 4.833,5 g e.a. ha-1 de glyphosate para os biótipos sensível e resistente, respectivamente, e verificou-se que existem diferenças significativas na resposta dos biótipos aos herbicidas graminicidas, dependendo da dose utilizada. Além disso, o biótipo sensível evidenciou maior capacidade de acúmulo de matéria seca e produção de sementes. Constatouse, assim, fator de resistência (FR) de 16,8 e que o mecanismo de resistência provoca alterações nas características biológicas do biótipo resistente e afeta a sensibilidade deste aos herbicidas graminicidas.

O glyphosate é um herbicida de amplo espectro utilizado há mais de 15 anos em pomares de maçã na região de Vacaria-RS, para manejo da vegetação nas linhas da cultura. São realizadas, em geral, três a quatro aplicações por ciclo e a dose normalmente utilizada é de 720 a 1.080 g e.a. ha-1 de glyphosate (2 a 3 L ha-1 do produto comercial). O azevém (Lolium multiflorum) é uma planta daninha comum em pomares e, tradicionalmente, sensível ao glyphosate. Entretanto, nos últimos anos a ocorrência de plantas de azevém que, após receberem o tratamento com glyphosate, não manifestam sintomas significativos de toxicidade sugere que elas adquiriram resistência ao produto. Assim, com o objetivo de avaliar a resposta de uma população de plantas de azevém ao glyphosate, foram realizados três experimentos: um em campo e dois em casa de vegetação. No experimento em campo os tratamentos avaliados constaram de doses crescentes de glyphosate (0, 360, 720, 1.440, 2.880, 5.760 e 11.520 g e.a. ha-1), e os herbicidas paraquat, glufosinate, haloxyfop e diclofop foram empregados como produtos-padrão, aplicados em dois estádios vegetativos do azevém. No experimento em casa de vegetação, os tratamentos constaram de doses crescentes de glyphosate (0, 360, 720, 1.440, 2.880 e 5.760 g e.a. ha-1) mais os herbicidas testemunhas, aplicados sobre plantas do biótipo considerado resistente e de um sensível. No segundo experimento realizado em casa de vegetação foram avaliados tratamentos contendo glyphosate (720, 1.440, 2.880, 720 + 720 e 720 + 1.440 g e.a. ha-1), em aplicações únicas e seqüenciais, mais os herbicidas paraquat, glufosinate, haloxyfop, clethodim, sethoxydim, diclofop, fenoxaprop, fluazifop, paraquat + diuron, atrazine + simazine, trifluralin e metolachlor. A toxicidade dos tratamentos herbicidas foi avaliada aos 15, 30 e 45 DAT (dias após tratamento). Os resultados obtidos nos experimentos em campo e em casa de vegetação, de forma geral, evidenciam que o biótipo sensível é facilmente controlado com o herbicida glyphosate e pelos demais herbicidas pós-emergentes avaliados, independentemente do estádio vegetativo. Demonstram, ainda, que o biótipo resistente apresenta-se, igualmente ao biótipo sensível, altamente suscetível aos herbicidas com mecanismo de ação distinto daquele do glyphosate. No entanto, o biótipo resistente apresenta baixa resposta ao herbicida glyphosate, mesmo se este for empregado em altas doses, evidenciando ter adquirido resistência a esse produto.

O objetivo da pesquisa foi investigar os aspectos da inter-relação da dose herbicida, sua concentração na solução e o volume do veículo diluente na ação do herbicida sulfosate, usando-se aveia-preta como espécie reagente. O experimento foi conduzido no ano agrícola de 1994 na EEA/UFRGS, em Eldorado do Sul, RS. Foram testadas cinco doses de sulfosate (0,75; 1,125; 1,5; 2,25 e 3,0 l ha-1 do produto comercial); cinco volumes de diluente (62; 94; 125; 188 e 250 l ha-1); e cinco concentrações de produto na calda (0,6; 0,9; 1,2; l,8 e 2,4% v/v), mais três padrões para comparação: glyphosate, paraquat+diuron e testemunha não tratada. Em cada situação, um desses parâmetros era mantido constante. Não houve diferença estatística na ação de glyphosate e sulfosate quando ambos foram usados sob as mesmas condições de aplicação. Ao se manter constante a variável volume de calda, constatou-se resposta significativa à dose de sulfosate. Esse comportamento se repetiu quando se manteve constante a concentração herbicida na calda e se variou a dose do produto. Em ambas as situações, níveis finais de controle, variáveis entre 90 e 100%, somente foram alcançados por doses de sulfosate de l,125 l ha-1 ou superiores; dose de 0,75 l ha-1 atingiu apenas 80% de controle. Já quando se manteve constante a dose herbicida, variando-se a concentração do sulfosate na calda, não houve diferença entre os tratamentos. Plantas de aveia tratadas no florescimento com 0,75 l ha-1 de sulfosate acumularam parcialmente reservas nos grãos, os quais também mostraram viabilidade de germinação em bioteste. The objective of this research was to investigate aspects of inter-relations of herbicide rate, its concentration in spray solution, and volume of vehicle diluent in the herbicide action of sulfosate, using oats as reagent species. The experiment was conducted during the 1994, growing season at the EEA/UFRGS, in Eldorado do Sul, RS, Brazil. There were tested five rates of sulfosate (0.75; 1.125; 1.5; 2.5; and 3,0 l ha-1 of formulated product); five diluent volumes (62; 94; 125; 188; and 250 l ha-1); and five concentrations in spray solution (0.6; 0.9; 1.2; 1.8; and 2.4% v/v); and also three standard treatments to compare with: glyphosate, paraquat + diuron, and a check plot not treated. In each situation, one of these parameters was maintained constant. There was no statistical differences in action between glyphosate and sulfosate when both were used under the same application conditions. At maintaining spray volume variable constant, it was detected significant response to sulfosate rate. This same behaviour repeated when herbicide concentration in spray solution was maintained constant and product rate varied. In both situations, final levels of control, varying between 90 and 100%, were reached only by sulfosate rates of 1.125 l ha-1 or higher; rate of 0.75 l ha-1 reached maximum control of 80%. When herbicide rate was maintained fixed, varying sulfosate concentration in spray solution, there were no differences among treatments. Oat plants treated at flowering with 0.75 l ha-1 of sulfosate partially accumulated reserves in grains, which also showed viability of germination in biossay.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho determinar a composição química da cera epicuticular dos biótipos de azevém (Lolium multiflorum) resistente e suscetível ao glyphosate, buscando relações entre suas características e a resistência dos biótipos ao herbicida. A cera epicuticular foi extraída e quantificada e os seus constituintes analisados por cromatografia em fase gasosa, acoplada a espectrômetro de massa (CG-EM). Para determinação da composição química, amostras de lâmina foliar foram retiradas 30 dias após a emergência das plantas, coletando-se a primeira folha com lígula totalmente visível. A quantidade de cera epicuticular extraída não diferiu entre os biótipos. Entre os compostos que constituem a cera epicuticular, os álcoois são os mais abundantes, sendo representados por apenas um composto: o hexacosan-1-ol (46,80% no biótipo resistente e 52,20% no biótipo suscetível). Ao comparar a polaridade da cera epicuticular dos biótipos de azevém, constatou-se que tanto no biótipo resistente quanto no suscetível a cera epicuticular apresentou mais de 50% de componentes polares (álcoois e aldeídos) em sua constituição, sendo esse valor igual a 69,80% no biótipo resistente e 64,94% no biótipo suscetível. Por meio da caracterização apresentada, pode-se afirmar que existem pequenas diferenças na cera epicuticular dos biótipos de azevém resistente e suscetível ao glyphosate; o biótipo resistente apresentou grau de polaridade pouco superior ao do biótipo suscetível, porém essa diferença não pode ser considerada marcante a ponto de determinar maior ou menor tolerância de um biótipo ou outro ao herbicida glyphosate. The objective of this work was to determine the chemical composition of epicuticular wax of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) biotypes resistant and susceptible to glyphosate, searching for relationships between their characteristics and the resistance of the biotypes to the product. The epicuticular wax was extracted and quantified, and its constituents analyzed by gas chromatography, coupled to mass spectrometer (CG-EM). To determine the chemical composition, leaf blade samples were obtained 30 days after plant emergence, the first leaf being collected with totally visible ligule. The amount of epicuticular wax did not differ between the biotypes. Alcohols are the most abundant among the compounds constituting the epiticular wax, represented by only one compound, hexacosan-1-ol (46.80% in the resistant biotype and 52.20% in the susceptible). When comparing the polarity of the epicuticular wax of the Italian ryegrass biotypes, it was verified that both in the resistant and susceptible biotypes, the epicuticular wax presented more than 50% of polar compounds (alcohols and aldehydes) in its constitution, with that value being equal to 69.80% in the resistant biotype and 64.94% in the susceptible. Thus, it can be stated that small differences exist in the epicuticular wax of Italian ryegrass biotypes resistant and susceptible to glyphosate. The resistant biotype presented a slightly higher polarity degree than the susceptible biotype but such difference cannot be considered sufficiently relevant to determine a greater or smaller tolerance of either biotype to glyphosate.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a capacidade competitiva entre biótipos de azevém resistente e suscetível ao glyphosate, bem como a interferência deles, em diferentes densidades, sobre o crescimento de plantas de trigo. No momento da colheita, aos 50 dias após a emergência do azevém, avaliaram-se o número de perfilhos, a altura de plantas e a área foliar. Nessa mesma ocasião, coletou-se a parte aérea e as raízes das plantas de trigo e de azevém resistente e suscetível, determinando-se a seguir a massa seca desse material em partes separadas (raiz, caule e folhas). Com base nos dados avaliados, as seguintes variáveis para o trigo e para os biótipos de azevém foram calculadas: taxa de crescimento da cultura (TCC = MS A/Ndias), em que MS A é a massa seca da parte aérea e Ndias é o período em dias entre a emergência e a colheita das plantas; área foliar específica (SLA = Af/MSf), em que Af é a área foliar e MSf é a massa seca foliar; e o índice de área (IAF = Af/St), sendo St a superfície de solo, indicando qual a área de folhas por m² de solo. As características avaliadas altura de planta, massa seca e área foliar dos biótipos de azevém suscetível apresentaram menor tendência de redução e maior plasticidade fenotípica, com o incremento da densidade de plantas por área em relação aos biótipos resistentes. Com relação à competição dos biótipos de azevém com plantas de trigo, efeito negativo sobre a cultura também foi observado quando esta se encontrava sob interferência do biótipo suscetível. Conclui-se que o biótipo suscetível de azevém é mais competitivo que o resistente. The objective of this work was to evaluate the competitiveness of ryegrass biotypes resistant and susceptible to glyphosate, as well as their interference in wheat growth at different densities. At harvesting, 50 days after emergence, tillering, height, and leaf area of ryegrass plants were evaluated and shoot and roots of ryegrass and wheat were collected and their root, stalk and leaf dry mass was determined. Based on the data, the following variables were evaluated for ryegrass and wheat: crop growth rate (TCC = MS A/Ndays), with MS A being shoot dry mass and Ndays the number of days between emergence and plant harvesting; specific leaf area (SLA = Af /MSf),with Af being the leaf area and MSf leaf dry mass; and leaf area index (IAF = Af/St), St being soil area, indicating leaf area per soil area. Plant height, dry mass and leaf area of the susceptible ryegrass showed smaller reductions and better phenotypic plasticity, in function of the increasing density per soil area, compared to the resistant one. The susceptible biotype showed to be more competitive and its interference in wheat development was more visible at lower densities. It was concluded that the susceptible ryegrass biotype is more competitive than the resistant one.

O glyphosate é o principal produto usado para manejo não-seletivo das plantas daninhas. Já foram identificados biótipos de azevém resistentes a esse herbicida no Rio Grande do Sul, os quais estão se tornando predominantes rapidamente. Objetivou-se neste trabalho identificar o tipo de herança, o número de genes que conferem resistência e o grau de resistência dos biótipos homozigotos e heterozigotos resistentes em azevém. Foram realizados cruzamentos recíprocos entre genitores suscetíveis e resistentes para obtenção de sementes F1 e, em seguida, efetuaram-se os retrocruzamentos resistente e sensível. Plantas F1 foram cruzadas, para obtenção da geração F2. Sobre as plantas F1, F2, RCr e RCs e genitores foi aplicado o glyphosate na dose de 720 g ha-1, para avaliar a segregação. A fim de avaliar o grau de resistência, as plantas F1 e os genitores resistente e sensível foram tratados com doses crescentes de glyphosate (0, 360, 720, 1.440 e 2.880 g ha-1). As plantas F1 evidenciaram resposta intermediária ao biótipo resistente e sensível, demonstrando que a interação alélica é do tipo dominância incompleta. As plantas F2 mostraram tendência para segregação 3:1, indicando que a característica resistência ao glyphosate é controlada por um gene semidominante. Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide used to control weeds. Azevem plants, which are tolerant to glyphosate, have been identified in Rio Grande do Sul, where they are rapidly becoming predominant. The objective of this work was to identify inheritance type, number of genes conferring resistance, and the degree of resistance in azevem plants. Reciprocal crossings between sensitive and resistant plants have been carried out to obtain F1 seeds which were crossed among themselves to obtain F2 plants .Herbicide containing 720 g ha-1 was applied on the F1, F2, RCr, Rc and parent plants to estimate segregation. To evaluate the degree of resistance of the F1 plants, resistant and sensitive parents were sprayed with increasing rates of glyphosate (0, 360, 720, 1.440 and 2.880 g ha-1). F1 plants showed intermediate response to the resistant and sensitive biotypes, indicating that allelic interaction is of the incomplete dominance type. F2 plants showed a tendency for segregation 3:1, indicating that resistance to glyphosate is controlled by a semi-dominant gene.

O glyphosate é um herbicida não-seletivo utilizado para controlar plantas daninhas há mais de 20 anos no Rio Grande do Sul. A buva (Conyza bonariensis) é uma espécie daninha comum nos Estados da região Sul do Brasil e tradicionalmente controlada com uso de glyphosate. Entretanto, nos últimos anos plantas de buva têm apresentado poucos sintomas de toxicidade em resposta ao tratamento com glyphosate, sugerindo que estas plantas são resistentes ao herbicida. Assim, com o objetivo de avaliar a resposta de uma população de plantas de buva a glyphosate, foram realizados três experimentos: um em campo e dois em casa de vegetação. No experimento em campo, os tratamentos avaliados constaram de doses crescentes de glyphosate (0, 360, 720, 1.440, 2.880 e 5.760 g ha-1), e os herbicidas paraquat (400 g ha-1) e 2,4-D (1.005 g ha-1) foram empregados como produtos testemunhas, com diferentes mecanismos de ação nas plantas. No experimento em casa de vegetação os tratamentos constaram de doses crescentes de glyphosate (0, 360, 720, 1.440, 2.880 e 5.760 g ha-1), mais os herbicidas testemunhas, aplicados sobre plantas de um biótipo considerado resistente e de outro considerado sensível. No segundo experimento realizado em casa de vegetação, foram avaliados os tratamentos contendo glyphosate (720, 1.440 e 2.880 g ha-1), mais os herbicidas chlorimuron-ethyl (40 g ha-1), metsulfuron-methyl (4 g ha-1), 2,4-D (1.005 g ha-1), paraquat (400 g ha-1) e diuron + paraquat (200 + 400 g ha-1), bem como a testemunha sem tratamento herbicida. A toxicidade dos tratamentos herbicidas foi avaliada aos 7, 15 e 30 DAT (dias após tratamento). Os resultados obtidos nos experimentos em condições de campo e em casa de vegetação, de forma geral, evidenciam que o biótipo sensível é controlado pelo glyphosate e pelos demais herbicidas avaliados. Demonstram ainda que o biótipo resistente apresenta-se, igualmente ao biótipo sensível, altamente suscetível aos herbicidas com mecanismo de ação distinto daquele do glyphosate. Entretanto, o biótipo resistente mostra baixa resposta ao herbicida glyphosate, mesmo se este for empregado em doses elevadas, evidenciando ter adquirido resistência a esse produto. Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide used for over 20 years to control weeds in Rio Grande do Sul. Horseweed (Conyza bonariensis) is a common weed in Rio Grande do Sul and traditionally sensitive to glyphosate. However, during the last years, some horseweed plants have not shown significant injury symptoms after treatment with glyphosate, suggesting that they are resistant to this herbicide. Aiming to evaluate the response of a population of horseweed plants to glyphosate, one field and two greenhouse experiments were carried out. The field experiment treatment had increasing rates of glyphosate (0, 360, 720, 1,440, 2,880 and 5,760 g ha-1), and also the herbicides paraquat and 2,4-D as standards. The greenhouse experiments had increasing rates of glyphosate (0, 360, 720, 1,440, 2,880 and 5,760 g ha-1) plus the above listed check herbicides sprayed on biotypes considered resistant and on plants of one susceptible biotype. In the second greenhouse experiment, the treatments were increasing rates of glyphosate (720, 1,440 and 2,880 g ha-1) and herbicides chlorimuron-ethyl, metsulfuron-methyl, 2,4-D, paraquat and diuron + paraquat sprayed on plants of resistant and susceptible biotypes. Horseweed control was accessed at 7, 15 and 30 DAT (days after treatment). Overall results of the field and greenhouse experiments provided evidence that the susceptible biotype is easily controlled by glyphosate and the other tested herbicides. In addition, the results demonstrated that the resistant biotype, as the susceptible biotype, is highly sensitive to herbicides with mode of action that differs from glyphosate. However, the resistant biotype showed low response to glyphosate, even at very high rates, confirming resistance of this horseweed population to glyphosate.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar as características associadas à eficiência de uso da água em biótipos de azevém resistente e suscetível ao glyphosate, em diferentes níveis de competição. O experimento foi realizado em esquema fatorial 2 x 5, com os dois biótipos de azevém, suscetível e resistente, em planta única no centro da parcela, competindo com 0, 1, 2, 3 e 4 plantas do biótipo oposto. Todas as características matéria seca da parte aérea (MSPA), condutância estomática (Gs), pressão de vapor na câmara subestomática (Ean), gradiente entre temperatura da folha e do ar (deltaT) e taxa de transpiração (E) foram avaliadas 50 dias após a emergência das plantas, sendo calculada também a eficiência do uso da água (WUE) pela relação entre a quantidade de CO2 fixado pela fotossíntese e a quantidade de água transpirada. Foi elaborada ainda uma matriz de correlação entre as variáveis. O biótipo suscetível apresentou maior acúmulo de MSPA, comparado ao biótipo resistente ao glyphosate, quando cultivado livre ou em competição, porém foi menos eficiente quanto ao uso da água. The objective of this work was to evaluate the characteristics associated to water use efficiency in ryegrass biotypes resistant and susceptible to glyphosate, under different competition levels. The trial was installed in factorial scheme (2 x 5), with one plant of the studied biotype alone at the center of the plot, under competition against 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 plants of the opposite biotype. The variables (shoot dry matter (MSPA), water vapor stomatal conductance (Gs), water vapor pressure from the leaf chamber (Ean), leaf and air temperature difference (deltaT) and transpiration rate (E)) were evaluated 50 days after emergence, with water use efficiency (WUE) being obtained by the relation between the amount of CO2 fixed by photosynthesis and the corresponding transpired water. A correlation table was built between all evaluated variables. The biotype susceptible to glyphosate accumulated dry matter more efficiently than the resistant one, when growing both alone or under competition. On the other hand, the biotype susceptible to glyphosate is less efficient in water use.

Um experimento em casa de vegetação foi realizado com os objetivos de avaliar a eficácia do herbicida glyphosate no controle de Euphorbia heterophylla se desenvolvendo em solo com diferentes teores de água e determinar qual o menor teor de água do solo que não prejudica a ação desse herbicida no controle dessa planta daninha. O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 6 x 5, sendo seis intervalos entre a última irrigação e a aplicação do herbicida (0, 6, 12, 24, 48 e 72 horas) e cinco doses de glyphosate (0, 180, 360, 720 e 1.080 g ha-1). Quando as plantas atingiram estádio de três pares de folhas, foram aplicados 10 mm de chuva simulada, conforme tratamento previsto. Ao término do período de simulação de chuva, aplicou-se o herbicida com pulverizador costal pressurizado com CO2, utilizando-se volume de calda de 120 L ha-1. Aos 7, 20, 34 e 41 dias após aplicação (DAA), foram avaliados o controle (por escala visual) e, aos 41 DAA, a massa seca de raízes e da parte aérea. Após análise dos dados, verificou-se que a partir da dose de 720 g ha-1 de glyphosate obteve-se controle satisfatório de E. heterophylla, independentemente do intervalo entre a última irrigação e a aplicação do herbicida. Pulverizações de 360 g ha-1 de glyphosate a intervalos menores que 48 horas entre a última irrigação e sua aplicação e em solo com teor de água maior que 0,09 cm³ cm-3 não prejudicaram a eficácia do herbicida. A aplicação de 180 g ha-1 de glyphosate a intervalos menores que 12 horas entre a última irrigação e sua aplicação e em solo com teor de água superior a 0,14 cm³ cm-3 não afetou a eficácia do herbicida. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of glyphosate in controlling Euphorbia heterophylla growing under different soil moisture levels and to determine the lowest soil moisture level failing to prevent herbicide effectiveness in controlling this weed. The experiments were arranged in a randomized block design in a 6 x 5 factorial scheme, corresponding to six intervals between the last irrigation and herbicide application (0, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hrs) and five glyphosate doses(0, 180, 360, 720, and 1.080 g ha-1). When the plants achieved the 3-leaf pair stage, 10 mm of simulated rain were applied. At the end of the rain simulation period, the herbicide was applied using a pressurized backpack sprayer with CO2, using 120 L ha-1 of spray volume. On days 7, 20, 34 and 41 after application, the control was evaluated by using a visual scale as well plant height (cm) and on day 41, the dry weight of both the root and aerial part was assessed. Satisfactory control levels of E. heterophylla were verified at a dose of 720 g ha-1 glyphosate, regardless of the time interval between the last irrigation and herbicide application. Application of 360 g ha-1 of glyphosate at time intervals shorter than 48 hrs, between the last irrigation and its application and in soils presenting water contents higher than 0.09 cm³ cm-3, did not prevent herbicide efficacy. Application of 180 g ha-1 of glyphosate at intervals shorter than 12 hrs between the last irrigation and its application and in soils presenting water contents higher than 0.14 cm³ cm-3 did not affect herbicide efficacy.

Avaliou-se neste trabalho a resistência de azevém (L. multiflorum) ao glyphosate e o impacto do controle desses biótipos sobre a respiração e biomassa microbiana do solo. Foram conduzidos dois ensaios: no primeiro foram avaliadas a intoxicação e a massa seca das plantas de biótipos de três populações de azevém: população 1 (reconhecidamente resistente), população 2 (resistência intermediária), e população 3 (sensível ao glyphosate), submetidas a diferentes doses de glyphosate (200, 400, 800, 1.600 e 3.200 g ha-1). No segundo ensaio foram avaliados a massa seca da parte aérea, a altura de plantas, o número de folhas de azevém e a respiração e massa microbiana do solo cultivado com os biótipos resistente e sensível, com e sem aplicação de glyphosate (480 g ha-1). Aos 14 DAT, observou-se morte do biótipo sensível quando tratado com doses a partir de 200 g ha-1 de glyphosate. Nos biótipos resistentes e com nível intermediário de resistência, a toxicidade do glyphosate às plantas de azevém foi de 85% na maior dose avaliada. O biótipo resistente apresentou maior produção de massa seca da parte aérea aos 42 DAT e na rebrota, aos 72 DAT, quando comparado ao biótipo intermediário. O biótipo sensível apresentou maior altura de plantas, número de folhas e massa seca da parte aérea, em comparação ao resistente, quando não tratados com o glyphosate. Não foi observada diferença na atividade microbiana do solo entre os tratamentos avaliados. This study aimed to evaluate the resistance Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum) against glyphosate and the impact of the control of these biotypes on soil respiration and microbial biomass. Two essays were conducted: the first evaluated intoxication and dry mass of the plants of biotypes of three Italian ryegrass population (population 1 - resistant; population 2 - intermediary resistance; and population 3 - sensitive to glyphosate) submitted to different glyphosate rates. The second assay evaluated dry matter of the aereal part, plant height, number of leaves and respiration and microbial mass of the soil cultivated with the resistant and sensitive biotypes, with and without glyphosate application (480 g ha-1). At 14 DAA, death of the susceptible biotype was observed, when treated with rates starting from 200 g ha-1 of glyphosate. The resistant ad intermediate resistant biotypes showed glyphosate phytotoxicity of 85% at the highest rate evaluated. The resistant biotype presented the highest dry matter production of the aerial part at 42 DAA and during sprouting, at 72 DAA, compared to the intermediary biotype. The sensitive biotype presented higher plant height, number of leaves and dry mass of the aerial part, to the resistant biotype, without glyphosate. No difference was observed in the microbial activity in the soil among the treatments.

O azevém é uma gramínea de ciclo anual, constituindo-se com freqüência em planta infestante em lavouras de trigo do Rio Grande do Sul. Em experimentos realizados em casa de vegetação e no campo, foi avaliada a suscetibilidade de dois biótipos de azevém ao herbicida glyphosate, bem como a eficiência de herbicidas de ação total na dessecação de Lolium multiflorum para a semeadura direta de trigo. O delineamento experimental foi completamente casualizado em casa de vegetação e de blocos ao acaso em campo, com três e quatro repetições, respectivamente. Foram avaliados herbicidas com mecanismos de ação distintos em diferentes doses: glyphosate, glufosinate, clethodim, haloxyfop-r e diclofop, paraquat e paraquat + diuron. Os resultados, em casa de vegetação, evidenciam que o biótipo sensível é totalmente controlado com glyphosate na dose de 360 g e.a. ha-1 e que doses de até 1.440 g e.a. ha-1 não afetam significativamente o acúmulo de matéria seca do biótipo resistente e produzem toxicidade inferior a 15% sobre este. Já as doses entre 1.440 e 5.760 g e.a. ha-1 de glyphosate reduzem significativamente a produção de matéria seca e resultam em toxicidade inferior a 45%. Em campo, os melhores controles de azevém foram propiciados pelos tratamentos clethodim (79,2 g ha-1) e diuron + paraquat (300 + 600 g ha-1), que não diferiram entre si. Assim, evidencia-se que a população de Lolium multiflorum avaliada neste trabalho é constituída predominantemente de um biótipo resistente aos herbicidas inibidores da enzima EPSPs. Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) is cultivated as forage and/or cover crop in no-till system. However, it is also a serious weed in wheat and other winter cereals in Southern Brazil. Experiments were conducted at greenhouse and field conditions to evaluate the susceptibility of two ryegrass biotype to glyphosate as well as the efficacy of other herbicides on the post-emergence control of the species for sowing wheat under no-till system. The experimental design was a completely randomized design for the greenhouse experiment and a completely randomized block design for the field experiment. Herbicides with different mechanisms of action were evaluated on the weed control: glyphosate, glufosinate, clethodim, haloxyfop-r and diclofop, paraquat and paraquat+diuron. The results obtained under greenhouse conditions indicated the glyphosate susceptible biotype was controlled by the rate of 360 g e.a. ha-1. The resistant ryegrass biotype had no reduction in dry matter production and less than 15 % phytotoxicity caused by glyphosate up to 1,440 g e.a. ha-1. However, glyphosate rates between 1440 and 5,760 g e.a. ha-1 reduced dry matter accumulation and resulted in toxicities under45%. Under field conditions, the best Lolium multiflorum control was given by clethodim 79.2 g ha-1 and diuron + paraquat at 300+600 g ha¹, respectively. The results obtained in these studies indicated that the population was composed predominantly by a biotype resistant to EPSPs inhibitor herbicides.

Alguns herbicidas não-seletivos usados no sistema de semeadura direta (plantio direto) podem ser parcialmente neutralizados pela água utilizada como veículo para aspersão. Isso pode ocorrer se o água empregada apresentar colóides orgânicos ou minerais em suspensão, os quais podem adsorver as moléculas dos herbicidas. O objetivo desse trabalho foi investigar o efeito de águas com diferentes origens e características químicas na atividade do herbicida glifosato. Os tratamentos foram formados por diversas águas minerais (Cuxambu, Da Guarda, Fonte Azul, Fontes de Belém, Fonte Ijuí. Fonte da Ilha, Itati, Minalba e Sarandi) e água destilada, usada como veículo de aspersão acrescidas de 450 g/ha e. a. de glifosato, sendo a aveia-preta a espécie reagente. Como resultados, constatou-se que apenas aos I2 e 15 dias após tratamento (DAT) ocorreram diferenças entre as águas, quando aquelas das marcas Da Guarda, Fonte Azul e Fonte Ijuí reduziram a atividade do glifosato em comparação às águas Fonte Sarandi, Itati e a destilada. Nas duas últimas avaliações (21 e 28 DAT) nenhuma das águas minerais afetou o desempenho do glifosato em comparação com a água destilada, demonstrando assim. não existir efeitos negatives dessas águas minerais na atuação daquele herbicida. Some non-selective herbicides used in no-till system may be partially neutralized in water utilized as spray vehicle. This can occur if the water employed contains orgânic or mineral coloids in suspension, which may adsorb herbicide molecules. The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of water from diferent origins and chemical characteristics on glyphosate activity. Treatments consisted of various mineral pource waters (Caxambu, Da Guarda, Fonte Azul, Fontes de Belém, Fonte Ijuí, Fonte da Ilha, Itati, Minalba e Sarandi) and also distitled water utilizing glyphosate rate of 450 g/ha a. e., that were applied over oat plants. Phytotoxicity loas visually evaluated at 7, 12, 15, 21 and 28 days after applications (DAA). It was observed that only ar 12 and 15 DAA occured diferences between waters. Da Guarda, Fonte Azul, and Fonte Ijuí reduced glyphosate activity in comparison to Fonte Sarandi, Itati and destilled waters. In the latest tuo evaluations (21 and 28 date) none of the mineral waters differed from destilled water shouing no negative effects of such waters on herbicide action of glyphosate.

Tentativas de aumentar a fitotoxicidade do herbicida glyphosate através da adição de ácido e/ ou de sulfato de amônio à calda tem sido promissoras. A adição dessas substâncias otimiza as propriedades químicas da calda herbicida, superando efeitos negativos do pH elevado e de ions nela presentes. O objetivo desse trabalho foi investigar o efeito da adição de ácido sulfúrico e/ou de sulfato de amônio à calda herbicida, sobre a eficiência do glyphosate misturado em diluente com alto pH e teores elevados de sais. Os tratamentos envolveram cinco doses de glyphosate (variáveis de 180 a 540 g/ha i.a.) diluídas em água destilada e, mais glyphosate a 270 g/ha misturado às águas minera is Fonte Azul e Fonte Ijuí em presença de ácido sulfúrico (0,5 1/ha) e/ou sulfato de amônio (2 ,5 kg/h a) . A fitotoxicidade foi avaliada aos 7, 17 e 27 dias após as aplicações do herbicida sobre a aveia preta. Os resultados demonstraram que a aveia-preta é muito suscetível à ação de glyphosate, mesmo aplicado a 270 g/ha, independente da água utilizada ou da adição de adjuvantes e, que a adição de ácido sulfúrico e/ou de sulfato de amônio à calda não alterou a atividade do herbicida. Attempts to increase phytotoxicity of glyphosat e her bic ide through addition of acid and/or of ammonium sulphate to the spray solution have been promising. Addition of these substances optimize chemical properties of the herbicide spray, overcoming negative effects of high pH and of íons present in it. The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of sulphuric acid and/or of ammonium sulphate addition to herbicide spray, on the efficiency of glyphosate mixed in diluents with high pH and high salts content. Glyphosate treatments consisted of five rates (variables from 180 to 540 g/ha a.e.), diluted in distilled water, and also glyph osate at 270 g/h a a. e. mix ed in the mineral waters Fonte Azul and Fonte Ijuí. To this herbicide rate, it was added 0,5 1/ha of sulphuric acid and /or 2,5 kg/ha of ammonium sulphate, whose treatments were sprayed over oat plants. Herbicide toxicity was evaluated at 7, 17, and 27 days after applications. Results showed that oats was very susceptible to glyphosate action, even when applied at 270 g/ha, independent of water used or adjuvantes added. It is concluded that addition of sulphuric acid and/or of ammonium sulphate to spray solution do not increase herbicide activity of glyphosate.
