Thermodynamically favorable selective electrooxidation reactions coupled with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a promising strategy for simultaneous production of value-added chemicals and hydrogen. In this work, a binder-free gold nanoflowers electrode based on carbon paper is prepared and used as anode catalyst, which results in good charge transfer, high stability and superior catalytic activity for electrooxidation of glycerol. We develop an integrated system of glycerol electrooxidation with HER, and the effect of potential on the distribution of anodic electrooxidation products and cathodic hydrogen production are investigated. At 1.0 V, the overall reaction reaches 10 mA cm−2 and the selectivity of glyceric acid (GLA) reaches 97.2%. At 1.2 V, hydrogen production reaches the highest value of 960 μmol L−1 and the anode product consists of a mixture of glyceric acid, glycolic acid (GA) and formic acid (FA). At 1.3 V, the selectivity of FA reaches 87.3%. Operando technique in situ infrared spectroscopy is used to monitor the immediate evolution and study the pathway of controlled glycerol electrooxidation. Bio-based packaging materials are promising alternatives to petroleum-based plastics. Paper-based packaging materials are candidates for improving food sustainability; however, paper has poor gas and water vapor barrier properties. In this study, entirely bio-based sodium caseinate (CasNa)-coated papers with two plasticizers, glycerol (GY) and sorbitol (SO), were prepared. The morphological and chemical structure, burst strength, tensile strength, elongation at break, air permeability, surface properties, and thermal stability of the pristine CasNa-, CasNa/GY-, and CasNa/SO-coated papers were evaluated. The use of GY and SO strongly affected the tensile strength, elongation at break, and air barrier of the CasNa/GY- and CasNa/SO-coated paper. The air barrier and flexibility of the CasNa/GY-coated papers were higher than those of the CasNa/SO-coated papers. Compared to SO, GY better coated and penetrated the CasNa matrix, which positively affected the chemical and morphological structure of the coating layer and the interaction between the coating layer and paper. Overall, CasNa/GY was superior to the CasNa/SO coating. In recent years, the need for portable, low-cost, and eco-friendly devices for testing and monitoring has arisen. Paper-based devices have emerged as a response to these needs due to the properties induced by capillarity, flexibility, disposability, and biodegradability. In this work, the authors explored the possibility of tuning the hygro-mechanical response of paper-based cantilever beams using glycerol. A lumped-parameter model with non-linear stiffness is used to describe the dynamic response of the beams using three parameters. An experimental method based on resonance frequency tests is used to study the influence of glycerol on the dynamic response of four different beam configurations. The obtained results demonstrate that the resonance frequency of paper-based mechanical systems can be easily tuned by the imbibition of a glycerol–water solution. This study could lead to the development of tunable paper-based mechanical systems for specific applications such as energy harvesters and hygro-mechanical-based sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microfluidic fuel cells (μFCs) offer a promising avenue for generating energy from glycerol, utilizing flow‐through electrodes to enhance reactant utilization. However, the cathodic reaction must efficiently consume the electrons harvested at the anode side to unlock its full potential. Here, we explore the feasibility of employing liquid oxidants as an alternative to O2 reduction on metal‐free carbon paper (CP) cathodes. We investigated the half‐cell reactions and the energy conversion in a new reusable 3D‐printed μFC. Half‐cell reactions predict spontaneous reactions by coupling glycerol electrooxidation in an alkaline medium with O2, Na2S2O8, and HClO from commercial bleach in an acidic medium. The μFC printed using the stereolithography apparatus technique build microchannels to place the Pt/C/CP anode and CP cathodes. The glycerol/Na2S2O8 μFC delivered a maximum of 32.4 mW cm−2, while glycerol/HClO μFC displayed 55.9 mW cm−2. This research sheds light on the potential of liquid oxidants as effective alternatives to O2 reduction, presenting a pathway toward optimizing μFCs and their practical applications in energy conversion from glycerol. The electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol by metal electrocatalysts is an effective method of low-energy-input hydrogen production in membrane reactors in alkaline conditions. The aim of the present study is to examine the proof of concept for the gamma-radiolysis-assisted direct growth of monometallic gold and bimetallic gold–silver nanostructured particles. We revised the gamma radiolysis procedure to generate free-standing Au and Au-Ag nano- and micro-structured particles onto a gas diffusion electrode by the immersion of the substrate in the reaction mixture. The metal particles were synthesized by radiolysis on a flat carbon paper in the presence of capping agents. We have integrated different methods (SEM, EDX, XPS, XRD, ICP-OES, CV, and EIS) to examine in detail the as-synthesized materials and interrogate their electrocatalytic efficiency for glycerol oxidation under baseline conditions to establish a structure–performance relationship. The developed strategy can be easily extended to the synthesis by radiolysis of other types of ready-to-use metal electrocatalysts as advanced electrode materials for heterogeneous catalysis. The Jatropha curcas plant (Jatropha) has been proposed as a source of biodiesel fuel, as it yields crude glycerol as an abundant by-product. Its by-products could serve as a starting material in making glycerol for FDA-regulated products. Jatropha is not regarded as a source of edible vegetable oil since it contains phorbol esters (PEs). PEs, even at very low exposure concentrations, demonstrate various toxicities in humans and animals, but may not be detected by routine impurity analyses. Here, we demonstrate the development of a rapid and simplified method for the detection and quantification of Jatropha-derived PE toxins using ambient ionization mass spectrometry. To do this, we successfully coupled a paper spray ambient ionization source with an ion trap portable mass spectrometer. The paper spray source was assembled using chromatography papers, and analyte ions were generated by applying a high voltage to a wetted paper triangle loaded with PE standards. For method development, we used commercially available PE standards on an ion trap portable mass spectrometer. Standard solutions were prepared using ethanol with PE concentrations ranging from 1.0 to 0.0001 mg mL−1. Spike and recovery experiments were performed using USP grade and commercially available glycerol. To discern chemical differences between samples, we applied multivariate data analysis. Based on the results obtained, paper spray coupled with a portable mass spectrometric method can be successfully adopted for the analysis of toxic contaminants present in glycerol-based consumer products with LOD and LOQ of 0.175 μg mL−1 and 0.3 μg mL−1 respectively. Novel nanocomposites films were prepared from TEMPO-oxidized nanofibrillated cellulose isolated from rice straw, chitosan nanoparticles (CHNP), and glycerol by solution casting. The percentage of chitosan nanoparticles ranged from 2.5 to 20% while a fixed ratio of glycerol (25%) was added. The effect of chitosan nanoparticles on porosity, tensile strength properties, water vapor permeability, grease-proof, and antimicrobial properties was studied. The results showed that addition of chitosan nanoparticles can improve tensile strength properties, reduce porosity, and impart NFC antimicrobial properties against Gram-positive bacteria ( Staphylococcus aureus ), Gram-negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli ), and yeast ( Saccharomyces cervisiae ). CHNP did not affect WVP or grease-proof properties of NFC films. The mixture containing CNF and 10% CHNP was used for paper coating and the effect of coating on tensile strength, porosity, water vapor permeability, water absorption, and grease-proof properties of paper sheets was studied. The results showed coating of paper sheets with thin film of NFC or NFC/CHNP can improve tensile strength properties, decrease porosity and water absorption, and increase grease-proof properties of paper sheets but did not affect their WVP. Presence of CHNP in the coating mixture resulted in higher tensile strength properties of coated paper sheets than in case of using NFC alone but no noticeable differences were found regarding porosity, WVP, grease proof, and water absorption of paper sheets coated with NFC or NFC/CHNP under the conditions used. The aim of this work was to make biodegradable plastics from renewable resources. Paper-based biodegradable plastics were produced via a sol-gel process by using zinc chloride solution. The optimum conditions were a zinc chloride concentration of 65%, reaction temperature of 70 °C, reaction time of 5 s, aging time of 3 h, and glycerol concentration of 10%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that no chemical reaction occurred and the crystal form of the cellulose remained cellulose I, but the degree of crystallinity decreased. Abstract: The effects of glycerol concentration and coating weight on biopolymer-coated paper properties were investigated using response surface methodology. Tests were run on the coated papers to determine water vapor barrier and mechanical properties. Coating weight was the most important parameter affecting water vapor permeability (WVP). Conversely, increasing coating weight led to a decrease in WVP and to an increase in tensile strength (TS) of the resulting coated papers. The papers coated with sodium caseinate (NaCAS) exhibited lower WVP values than those coated with other biopolymers. The TS of the papers coated with hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) and chitosan was not affected by the glycerol concentration. HPMC-coated papers were higher in TS and %E than the other coated papers. For all types of coated paper, a maximum level of coating weight and level of glycerol concentration within range of 18.72–26.11% were found to be optimum for minimum WVP and maximum TS and %E. Abstract: The MixAlco™ process biologically converts biomass to carboxylate salts that may be chemically converted to a wide variety of chemicals and fuels. This study looked at the viability of the following substrates: office paper, pineapple residue, Aloe vera rinds, wood molasses, sugar molasses, and glycerol. All agricultural substrates were initially tested to determine their carbohydrate and lignin content because lignin reduces substrate digestibility. Only pineapple residue had a high enough lignin content (18.3%) to necessitate pretreatment. Pineapple residue was treated with excess lime (300gkg−1 Ca(OH)2 on dry biomass, t =1h) and then neutralized with CO2, which reduced the lignin content to 4.89%. All substrates were anaerobically fermented in batch culture with marine microorganisms for 24 days. The acid concentrations (g mixed acid L−1) were Aloe vera (25.5), office paper (24.0), glycerol (22.6), pineapple residue (17.2), wood molasses (19.4) and sugar molasses (18.9). The conversions (g volatile solids digested g−1 volatile solids fed) were Aloe vera (0.59), office paper (0.50), glycerol (0.62), pineapple residue (0.52), wood molasses (0.42) and sugar molasses (0.82). The selectivities (g acetic acid equivalents g−1 VS digested) were Aloe vera (0.64), office paper (0.62), glycerol (0.51), pineapple residue (0.39), wood molasses (0.61) and sugar molasses (0.33). The production of biosurfactant by Pseudomonas aeruginosa TGC01 using crude glycerol and sodium nitrate as the sole substrate and nitrogen source, respectively, was investigated using two mineral culture media. Two inoculum sizes (5 and 10% v/v) and two volumes of the culture medium (50 and 100 mL) in 500 mL Erlenmeyer flask also were used. Enzymatic hydrolyses of waste office paper (WOP), newspaper (NP) and eucalyptus wood chips (EWC) were carried out using the biosurfactant from P. aeruginosa TGC01. The decrease in volume of the culture medium increased the production of rhamnolipid by 500% in relation to concentration obtained when higher volume of culture medium was used. High quantity biosurfactant was recovered (11 g/L) with desired surface active properties after extraction using chloroform:methanol (v/v). The biosurfactant was able to reduce the water surface tension from 72 to 27 mN/m with a critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 100 mg/L and a stable emulsion index (above 60%) in the enzymatic hydrolysis (pH 4.8 and 50 °C for 4 h). Biosurfactant increased the glucose released in the enzymatic hydrolysis in relation to control (without tensoactive) when WOP (19% increase) and NP (113% increase) were used. A cheap and simple procedure for the simultaneous colorimetric determination of glycerol, magnesium and calcium in biodiesel samples using a paper-based analytical device (PAD) was developed. A reversed-phase air-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (RP-AA-DLLME) approach was proposed and used for glycerol, magnesium and calcium separation from biodiesel samples into aqueous phase (sodium periodate solution). After RP-AA-DLLME the obtained hydrophilic emulsion (biodiesel fuel in water) containing target analytes was introduced to a sample zone of the PAD, and as the emulsion penetrated through hydrophilic cellulose fibers to detection zones its destruction was observed. Colorimetric detection of calcium and magnesium with Eriochrome Black T and derivative of glycerol (formaldehyde) with acetylacetone on the detection zones of the PAD was implemented using conventional scanner and Corel® PHOTO-PAINT™ X7 software. Under optimal conditions, the calibration curves were linear in the ranges 100–300 μg g−1 for glycerol and 1–15 μg g−1 for calcium and magnesium. The limits of detection, calculated from a blank test based on 3σ, were 30 μg g−1 for glycerol and 0.3 μg g−1 for calcium and magnesium. The PAD was successfully applied for biodiesel samples analysis. A first paper-based analytical device for the simultaneous colorimetric determination of glycerol, calcium and magnesium in biodiesel samples was successfully developed. A novel approach for biodiesel samples pretreatment based on a reversed-phase air-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction was also proposed for the first time. The reversed-phase air-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction was coupled with paper-based analytical device and applied for the simultaneous colorimetric determination of glycerol, calcium and magnesium in biodiesel samples. In this study, it was found, that glycerol extraction kinetics from biodiesel samples to aqueous phase can be accelerated in the presence of periodate-ions due to analyte oxidation to water-soluble formaldehyde. Concrete production is a large scale process that involves high energy consumption. In order to increase the sustainability of this process, the reduction of energy input is necessary. Bio-glycerol was demonstrated to be a highly efficient renewable-based additive in the grinding process for concrete production and helped reduce energy costs and improve the quality of the resulting product. In order to understand its excellent aiding properties, the interaction of glycerol with cement clinkers was investigated; both chemical and physical interactions were taken into account. The results of this investigation points to surface tension modification of the clinker particles as one of the main effects of bio-glycerol addition during the grinding process. BSTRACT: The combined effects of mica (0% to 1.2% [w/w]), carnauba wax (0% to 0.8% [w/w]), glycerol (0% to 6% [w/w]), and sodium caseinate (10% to 13% [w/w]) concentrations on water vapor barrier and mechanical properties of coated paper were studied. A Doehlert matrice was used to investigate the main effects of these factors and their different interactions. The results were analyzed using the response surface methodology. Carnauba wax and glycerol concentrations were the most important parameters affecting water vapor permeability (WVP). Glycerol enhanced WVP as its concentration increased. Carnauba wax and mica factors decreased WVP of coated paper. A series of task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs) based on glycerylimidazolium cations have been prepared by reaction of 1-chloropropanediol, a compound obtainable from glycerol (a widely available and in-expensive waste product), with the appropriate base (1-H-imidazole, 1,2-dimethylimidazole and 1-methyl-1-H-imidazole). The reaction of 3-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)propane-1,2-diol with chloroalkanes, bromoalkanes and alkyl mesylates gave the corresponding salts which were characterized. The preparation of bioplastics based on copolymers of maleic anhydride and glycerol with the addition of bioactive lactic acid units is described. The resulting copolymers are promising for use as reinforcing polymer systems of cellulose-containing materials used in packaging. It has been shown that the use of lactic acid allows one to obtain synthetic biopolymers that rapidly decompose under natural conditions, which is favorable for protecting the environment. Kale has gained popularity as a healthy food choice due to its rich nutrient profile. However, kale production systems are also affected by various pests and diseases, especially plant pathogenic bacteria, such as Pectobacterium carotovorum. The purpose of this research was to investigate the biocontrol activity of the Pseudomonas fluorescens strain SP007s and develop a formulation that provides stability, long shelf life, and disease control, as well as promoting growth in kale; we expect this formulation to have further commercial applications in the cultivation of kale. The results indicated that a unique mixture of paper sludge, sugar sludge, and glycerol at 40% relative humidity promoted SP007 survival for 6 months at room temperature (30 °C) with measures of 5.92 × 106 CFU/g. This treatment maintained the control efficacy of P. carotovorum in infected soil within 28 days of soil drenching. We evaluated the SP007s formula for controlling soft rot disease in greenhouse conditions, and our results revealed that it can reduce the disease in kale by 65.2% and promotes growth in terms of canopy width, shoot height, number of leaves per plant, fresh weight, and dry weight, which were superior to the control. In addition, the formula can induce the accumulation of endogenous salicylic acid and phenolic compounds, as well as a systemic acquired resistance pathway in the plant defense system. Therefore, the formula of SP007s can be a promising novel biocontrol formula for use in kale production, as it promotes plant growth and acts against P. carotovorum causal soft rot disease. In this work, Pd and Pt electrocatalysts were electrodeposited on three-dimensional carbon paper and carbon nanofoam with the purpose of increasing the catalytic area to improve the glycerol electro-oxidation. SEM and cross-sectional SEM micrographs showed that Pd and Pt particles were well-distributed over the entire three-dimensional electrode surfaces. Commercial Pd/C and Pt/C catalysts deposited by the spray method were used for comparison, showing lower surface area (SA) utilization than those electrodeposited. The electrodeposition effectiveness to cover the electrode surfaces was evaluated by changes in overall SA and through the calculation of electrochemically active surface area (EASA) and specific surface area (SSA). Despite the larger EASA values found for Pd and Pt on nanofoam, Pt on paper showed the highest utilization of the surface area, obtaining an SSA of 58.1 m2 g−1. Moreover, the electrodeposition of Pd and Pt dramatically increased the EASA versus the geometrical area, improving this ratio 16 (Pd on paper), 151 (Pt on paper), 158 (Pd on nanofoam) and 277-fold (Pt on nanofoam). The electrodeposited porous Pt electrodes showed good activity for glycerol oxidation, exhibiting a more negative potential than Pd-based materials. However, for fuel cell applications operated at intermediate temperatures, Pd on carbon paper is the optimal candidate to be used as an anode because of its high current density and excellent poisoning tolerance. This paper reports a novel α-gel formulation technology referred to as polymer complexed lamella (PCL) that uses hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) and glycerol. The PCL method suppressed lipid crystallization even after drying. This effect was maximized by the addition of HPMC and glycerol at high temperature. HPMC and lipids coexisted when mixed at high temperature, which decreased the mobility of HPMC, an effect that was enhanced by the strong interaction of glycerol with HPMC. These results indicate that mixing of HPMC with glycerol directly regulates the lipid structure and suppresses crystallization. PCL also maintained the effect of occlusion related to the moisturization of skin, even if the membrane was repeatedly bent such as in facial expressions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Insufficient knowledge of the composition and variation of isoprenoid and branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) in agricultural soils exists, despite of the potential effect of different management types (e.g. soil/water and redox conditions, cultivated plants) on GDGT distribution. Here, we determined the influence of different soil management types on the GDGT composition in paddy (flooded) and adjacent upland (non-flooded) soils, and if available also forest, bushland and marsh soils. To compare the local effects on GDGT distribution patterns, we collected comparable soil samples in various locations from tropical (Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippines) and subtropical (China and Italy) sites. We found that differences in the distribution of isoprenoid GDGTs (iGDGTs) as well as of branched GDGTs (brGDGTs) are predominantly controlled by management type and only secondarily by climatic exposition. In general upland soil had higher crenarchaeol contents than paddy soil, which on the contrary was more enriched in GDGT-0. The GDGT-0 / crenarchaeol ratio was 3-27 times higher in paddy soil and indicates the enhanced presence of methanogenic archaea, which were additionally linked to the number of rice cultivation cycles per year (higher number of cycles was coupled with an increase in the ratio). The TEX86 values were 1.3 times higher in upland, bushland and forest soils than in paddy soils. In all soils brGDGT predominated over iGDGTs, with the relative abundance of brGDGTs increasing from subtropical to tropical soils. Higher BIT values in paddy soils compared to upland soils together with higher BIT values in soil from subtropical climates indicate effects on the amounts of brGDGT through differences in management as well as climatic zones. In acidic soil CBT values correlated well with soil pH. In neutral to alkaline soils, however, no apparent correlation but an offset between paddy and upland managed soils was detected, which may suggest that soil moisture may exert an additional control on the CBT in these soils. Lower MBT' values and calculated temperatures (TMC) in paddy soils compared to upland soils may indicate a management (e.g. enhanced soil moisture through flooding practises) induced effect on mean annual soil temperature (MST). The article discusses the study on the utilization of modified talc as internal treatment for papermaking. It states that talc has been modified chemically with starch, carboxymethyl cellulose, glycerol, and polyacrylamide in the study. It mentions that results of the study shows that modified talc gives higher results when used as internal treatment for papermaking compared with native talc. In addition, results indicate that modified talc enhances the mechanical and optical properties for filled or coated handsheets. Moreover, talc modification improves filler-fiber-filler bond.

Mechanochemistry and oleochemistry and their combination have been known for centuries. Nevertheless, bioeconomy and circular economy concepts is much more recent and has motivated a regain of interest of dedicated research to improve alternative technologies for the valorization of biomass feedstocks. Accordingly, this review paper aims essentially at outlining recent breakthroughs obtained in the field of mechanochemistry and oleochemicals such as triglycerides, fatty acids, and glycerol derivatives. The review discusses advances obtained in the production of small chemicals derived from oils with a brief overview of vegetable oils, mechanochemistry and the use of mechanochemistry for the synthesis of biodiesel, lipidyl-cyclodextrine, dimeric and labelled fatty acids, calcium diglyceroxide, acylglycerols, benzoxazine and solketal. Waste glycerol can be subjected to various processing operations, including purification and refining, to obtain glycerol of an appropriate purity. Alternative methods for utilising waste glycerol are also being sought, e.g., by converting it into other valuable chemical products or biofuels. Therefore, various technologies are being developed to ensure effective and sustainable utilisation of this type of waste. The production of value-added products from waste glycerol strongly determines the improvement of the economic viability of biofuel production and corresponds to the model of a waste-free and emission-free circular economy. This paper characterises the mechanisms and evaluates the efficiency of existing methods for microbiological utilisation of waste glycerol into liquid biofuels, including biodiesel, bioethanol and biobutanol, and identifies further production avenues of value-added products. Chemical process control relies on a tightly controlled, narrow range of margins for critical variables, ensuring process stability and safeguarding equipment from potential accidents. The availability of historical process data is limited to a specific setpoint of operation. This challenge raises issues for process monitoring in predicting and adjusting to deviations outside of the range of operational parameters. Therefore, this paper proposes simulation-assisted deep transfer learning for predicting and optimizing the final purity and production capacity of the glycerin purification process. The proposed network is trained by the simulation domain to generate a base feature extractor, which is then fine-tuned using few-shot learning techniques on the target learner to extend the working domain of the model beyond historical practice. The result shows that the proposed model improved prediction performance by 24.22% in predicting water content and 79.72% in glycerin prediction over the conventional deep learning model. In this paper, a transmission line with five spiral-wires in parallel was designed. The transit time and the characteristic impedance of the transmission line are 200 ns and 14 Ω, respectively. Its slow wave coefficient is close to 13. The insulating medium of the transmission line is glycerin. In order to investigate the breakdown strength of glycerin under a hundred-nanosecond pulse, simulations and experiments are conducted. The results indicate that the breakdown strength of glycerin under hundred nanoseconds reached 653 kV/cm, which is a 400 kV/cm increase compared with that under a microsecond pulse. However, under hundred nanoseconds, the breakdown strength of glycerin in transmission is unaffected by pressure within 1 MPa, and pressure is conducive to the insulation recovery of glycerin. Cellular gravel based on alumino-silicate wastes including residual clay brick recovered from construction demolition and fly ash resulted from coal burning in energy industry was experimentally made. The expanding process made with glycerin as a liquid organic material together water glass was obtained by direct electromagnetic wave warming without affecting the structural integrity of the product. The special effectiveness of the direct irradiation of the material led to extremely low specific electricity consumption (0.53-0.64 kWh/kg). The optimal version had the following characteristics: bulk denseness of 0.21 g·cm-3, heat conductivity of 0.063 W·m-1 ·K-1, compression resistance of 3.9 MPa, flexural strength of 2.4 MPa, and cell dimension within the limits of 0.2-0.5 mm. The use of alumino-silicate wastes in association with direct microwave warming keeping the physical, thermal, mechanical and microstructural properties unchanged (almost similar to industrial products) constitutes the paper originality. In this paper, for the first time, photopolymers were synthesized from glycerol acrylates with different numbers of functional groups, 2-hydroxy-3-phenoxypropyl acrylate, glycerol dimethacrylate or glycerol trimethacrylate, without and with the addition of vanillin styrene. The photocuring kinetics were monitored by real-time photorheometry. The mechanical, rheological, thermal, antimicrobial and shape-memory properties of the photopolymers were investigated. All polymers synthesized demonstrated antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as antifungal activity against Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger. 2-Hydroxy-3-phenoxypropyl acrylate-based polymers showed thermoresponsive shape-memory behavior. They were able to maintain their temporary shape below the glass transition temperature and return to their permanent shape above the glass transition temperature. Catalytic conversion of glycerol to lactic acid has been considered as one of the effective ways to solve the problem of glycerol surplus. In this paper, we reported a facile synthesis of Cu/ZnO/C by direct calcination of Cu-supported zeolitic imidazolate framework(ZIF-8), and the performance of the catalysts for converting glycerol to lactic acid were investigated. The properties of Cu/ZnO/C catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM and TG techniques. The results showed that nano-copper was distributed uniformly on the porous carbon carrier. The zinc oxide after thermal treatment provided abundant metal active sites and had synergistic effect with nano copper. In addition, the lactic acid selectivity of 84% was obtained at the glycerol conversion of 95.1% at 230 °C, 1.5 MPa and 15% copper loading for 6 h reaction.
