Some manganese potentialities for modification of solid-state electrodes are discussed in the work. In particular, the ability of Mn2+ to incorporate easily thin lipid films deposited on to the electrode surface is stressed. The voltammetric analysis of thus modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) reveals possibilities for driving redox reactions in the electrolyte. The results suggest a transfer of electrons across the lipid phase mediated through the transitions of the embedded manganese. On the other hand, at higher concentrations the Mn2+ integration within the supported liquid films leads to changes in their structural parameters, evident from impedance data. In this respect, a comparison with the action of Ca2+ and Mg2+ shows a somewhat stronger impact of the Mn2+ ions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The impact of some divalent cations on the structure of a model membrane system, comprising wetting lipid films, is assayed in this work. The results from impedimetry suggest prominent structural changes upon the addition of the discussed ions to the electrolyte solution contacting the film. These changes are manifested by the increase of resistivity of the films as well as by the decrease of capacitance dispersion. In accordance with other data in the literature, manganese (Mn2+) turned out to have an effect greater than those of Mg2+ and Ca2+. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The formation and study of stable cholesterol enriched thin lipid layers onto the surface of glassy carbon electrode is reported in this work. The method of formation relies on additional thinning of wetting films by electrostriction. Electrochemical techniques based on the concepts of impedance and voltammetry are used to explore the films’ features. The impedance data reveal a substantial change of relaxation characteristics of the modified films. In this respect, opportunities for the evaluation of the films’ stage based on the approximation with ‘constant phase angle element’ are discussed. The interaction of solid supported liquid films of lipids with saponin is investigated in the present work by impedimetric analysis. It is shown that the specific reaction of saponin with the cholesterol molecules present in the modified films can readily be distinguished by the impedance data. In this respect, possibilities for the realization of sensor devices based on solid supported lipid films are briefly discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The employment of manganese (Mn2+) as a mediator for the electron transfer across glassy carbon-supported thin lecithin films in contact with electrolyte is described in the present work. The results suggest, that the ascorbate oxidation, which is normally hampered by the film, can proceed through the incorporated manganese.
