Inkjet printing is an advanced printing technology that has been used to develop conducting layers, interconnects and other features on a variety of substrates. It is an additive manufacturing process that offers cost-effective, lightweight designs and simplifies the fabrication process with little effort. There is hardly sufficient research on tactile sensors and inkjet printing. Advancements in materials science and inkjet printing greatly facilitate the realization of sophisticated tactile sensors. Starting from the concept of capacitive sensing, a brief comparison of printing techniques, the essential requirements of inkjet-printing and the attractive features of state-of-the art inkjet-printed tactile sensors developed on diverse substrates (paper, polymer, glass and textile) are presented in this comprehensive review. Recent trends in inkjet-printed wearable/flexible and foldable tactile sensors are evaluated, paving the way for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an anisotropic damage model to deal with the fragmentation induced by impact loadings on glass samples. As small-scale (i.e. sub-element) damage is described as well as cracks extending above the element scale, an approach referred to as “meso-damage” is developed. The latter, which is based on the knowledge of random distributions of initiation sites, predicts different regimes such as single or multiple fragmentation. Abstract: Concern about fatigue is one of the factors limiting use of glass/epoxy jointing systems for timber in construction. In this paper, a series of high-cycle fatigue tests are reported which indicate that the performance is as good, if not superior to, conventional jointing systems. The performance of the joints was found to produce a straight line on a logarithmic S–N plot and thus be readily predictable for design purposes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper discusses the use of etalons fabricated from prepared glass slides to quantify the dimensional stability of two adhesive materials in damp environments. This technique facilitated the screening of adhesives for a kinematically demanding application. In addition to describing the etalon technique, additional data are provided on the performance of the device with the selected adhesives. One of the adhesives is simply identified as a cationic cured adhesive, while the other adhesive was Loctite 3615. A range of adhesive bond gaps from 50 to 500 μm was examined for the adhesive that showed the least displacement resulting from environmental aging. The results of this testing were applied to a kinematically sensitive device for verification of the adhesives use in this geometry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports that the New Zealand government, through Environment Minister David Benson-Pope, congratulated the country's paper sector for meeting the paperboard recycling target two years ahead of schedule. The sector registered a 72% recovery rate of paperboard packaging ahead of the 2008 target year. He emphasized that the country's recycling targets are comparable with the rates being achieved overseas. Benson-Pope said that the national targets for the recovery of aluminum, glass, steel, and plastic are all proceeding towards their 2008 targets.
