The Huanglong travertine landscape, which is located on the eastern edge of the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau, is a World Natural Heritage Site with important tourism, aesthetic and scientific research value. However, no convincing travertine sedimentary age data have been reported for this area, and these late Cenozoic terrestrial carbonates have not been effectively included in studies of the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau geological environment. In this study, U‐series dating of the travertines was carried out using a multi‐collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer to determine a time series for travertine deposition in the Dawan Valley (only a mountain away from Huanglong). The analyses of the processes operating during travertine deposition as the trench system evolved are performed based on a comprehensive study of the geological setting, structure and glacial landforms. The results suggest that travertine deposition in the Dawan Valley started at ca 13 ka and had begun to wane by the early Holocene (ca 7 ka). At the same time, the Huanglong Valley travertines began to be deposited on a large scale in response to a hydrological transition event. This event might reflect tectonic activity in particular, or possibly earthquakes or glacial retreat caused by climate warming. The findings reported here provide age data for late Cenozoic geological and environmental events such as climate variations and continental activity on the eastern margin of the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau. The goal of this research study is to describe academic issues which have been debated in the field of Chinese geosciences for a century. In 1922, Jonquei S. Lee (Li Siguang) discovered Quaternary glacial relics at Taihang Mountainin eastern China. In 1947, he published his research findings in the magazine Mount Lushan in Glacial Age. The research results had established three Ice Ages: Poyang (Gonzi), Dagu (Minde), and Lushan (Lisi). However, at that time, no Wurm glacial relics of the last Ice Age had been found in Lushan Mountain. Since then, the research team represented by Shi Yafeng, who is considered to be "the father of glaciers in China", questioned Jonquei S. Lee's research results and concluded that "Professor Jonquei S. Lee's Quaternary glacier research in Lushan Mountain having misread the debris flow". In 2005, the "middle‐low mountains" in eastern China were finally defined as follows: "We clearly and unambiguously believe that there were no glacial activities in the middle‐low mountainous areas of eastern China (east of 102° to 104°E; below 3,000 and 2,500 m) during the Quaternary Period". Currently, the long‐standing academic debate appears to have come to a conclusion. As of 2015, the author and others began to investigate and study the Quaternary glacial relics in Mengshan Mountain (1,156m above sea level), Shandong Province, one of the "middle‐low mountains" of eastern China. The relics have been observed to posses the systematic features of glacial erosion, trough and valley striations, and moraine deposits. The applied dating method shave confirmed that there were not only glacial relics of the last Ice Age (Wurm), but also Holocene glacial relics in the Mengshan Mountain area. Therefore, in order to further establish the corresponding relationship between the glacier, loess, stream sediment series, and MIS in the Mengshan Mountain area, a large number of chronological studies have been carried out regarding the various types of sediments in the area, and 24 dating datahave been obtained using OSL, CRN, and 14Cmethods. On this basis, the corresponding relationship between the sedimentary sequences and the MIS was established for the first time in eastern China, which in dicates the environmental changes which had occurred in eastern China since 80ka. These discoveries s and chronological study results confirm the existence of the Last Ice Age, as well as Holocene glacial relics at Mengshan Mountain, there by confirming that Quaternary glaciation had occurred in the middle‐low mountain areas of eastern China. The global synchronous occurrence of glacial diamictite at the boundary of the Tonian-Cryogenian suggests a rapid onset of the Neoproterozoic Sturtian glaciation. However, uncomfortable contacts between the Tonian and Cryogenian successions obscure our understanding of ice sheet dynamics during the initiation of the global glaciation. Here, we perform a detailed facies analysis of two successions (the Tonian Gongdong to the Cryogenian Chang'an Formation) from the deep water facies of the Nanhua Basin, South China. Seven main lithofacies were recognized, including massive to laminated siltstone/muddy siltstone (Fm), ripple cross-laminated siltstone (Fr), massive to horizontal sandstone (Sm), gravely sandstone (Sg), matrix-supported massive diamictite (Dmm), weakly stratified diamictite (Dms) and dropstone bearing siltstone (Fdl). These facies were deposited from turbidity currents to glacial-influenced debris flows in deepwater environments. The top of the Gongdong Formation is mainly composed of massive to laminated siltstone/muddy siltstone and thin-bedded massive sandstone. The base of the Chang'an Formation is primarily constituted by massive to stratified diamictite. The gradual transition from massive to laminated siltstone to dropstone bearing siltstone and massive diamictite at the boundary between Gongdong and Chang'an formations indicates an ice sheet advancing sequence. The presence of abundant ice-rafted dropstones and rippled siltstone at the basal Chang'an Formation suggests active glacier calving and subglacial debris flows during ice sheet advancing. Also, the advancing ice sheet and glacial-influenced deposition are also supported by frequent changes in organic carbon isotope values (ranging from −26.5‰ to −29.3‰) that result from increasing terrestrial inputs. The ice sheet advancing sequence here shows that the global glaciation started within 1 million years, according to the average sedimentation rate of the glacial turbidity deposits. These findings provide the initial comprehensive sedimentological evidence for the rapid onset of Snowball Earth. • Seven lithofacies are recognized during the Tonian-Cryogenian transition in South China. • The sedimentary successions record an ice sheet advancing sequence during the onset of the Sturtian glaciation. • Based on the average sedimentation rate of the glacial deposits, the duration of ice sheet advance is estimated to be <1 million years. Glacial landforms on Mount Taibai, the main peak of the Qinling Mountains, China, are investigated to improve understanding of Quaternary palaeoclimate evolution in this key region of China's geographical north and south junction. Cosmogenic radionuclide 10Be exposure dating and glacier-climate modeling are used to reconstruct glacier evolution during the last glaciation in the Eryehai Valley, on the slopes of Mount Taibai. Chronological results indicate that the earliest initiation of the Mount Taibai glaciation was earlier than the global Last Glacial Maximum (gLGM). The glacier subsequently advanced further reaching its greatest extent during the gLGM between ∼23.50 ka and 21.76 ka. After this time, the glacier receded rapidly, before disappearing completely between ∼17.9 ka and 17.7 ka. We also analyzed a compilation of 229 recalculated 10Be exposure ages from the mountain ranges on the eastern Tibetan Plateau (TP), as well as in the Jaggang Mountains on the south-central TP, and found that a few mountain ranges on the eastern TP experienced two distinct millennial-scale moraine building events during the gLGM. Using glacier-climate modeling, temperature was calculated to have fallen from between ∼9.0 and 9.4 °C during the gLGM, with precipitation being 60–80% of the present-day value. If precipitation during the rapid retreat of the glacier between ∼21.76 ka and 18.10 ka were to be consistent with present trends, then the temperature would have needed to increase by a total of ∼1.3 °C during this period, with a mean rate of increase of 0.4 °C/ka. Combining our findings with other paleoclimate proxies, we infer that the main reason that there was no further glacial advance after the gLGM on Mount Taibai was the lower altitude of its peak relative to the Equilibrium-line Altitude (ELA). Understanding ancient climate changes is hampered by the inability to disentangle trends in continental ice volume from records of relative sea-level change. As a unique coastal deposit in tropical and subtropical regions, beachrock has been proved to be reliable for constraining the glacial meltwater signal and thus the total volume of land-based ice in Quaternary. However, beachrock is rarely recognized in the fossil record due to (a) the two-dimensional distribution of beach deposits, as opposed, for example, to extended platform sediments, and (b) the fact that specific environmental conditions are required in order to lithify sediments directly on the beach. By combining the stratigraphic architecture with petrography of characteristic carbonate cements, we demonstrate the first known occurrence of Ordovician beachrock in the Tarim Block, northwestern China. According to biostratigraphic data, a middle Katian (Upper Ordovician) palaeokarst surface is capped by carbonate conglomerate beachrock and this is suggesting a significant relative sea-level rise in late Katian. The beachrock can be correlated with widespread subaerial exposure surfaces and a pronounced stratigraphic gap within the Katian in northwestern Tarim. We suggest that the beachrock ‘fingerprinted’ a strong melt-water pulse in high latitudes after a short-lived Katian glaciation, which has not received much attention in scientific papers so far. The glacial trough is a common glacier erosion landscape, which plays an important role in the study of glacier erosion processes. In a sharp contrast with the developing river, which is generally meandering, the developing glacial trough is usually wide and straight. Is the straightness of the glacial trough just the special phenomenon of some areas or a universal feature? What controls the straightness of the glacial trough? Until now, these issues have not been studied yet. In this paper, we conduct systematic numerical models of the glacier erosion and simulate the erosion evolution process of the glacial trough. Numerical simulations show that: (1) while the meandering glacier is eroding deeper to form the U-shaped cross section, the glacier is eroding laterally. The erosion rate of the ice-facing slope is bigger than that of the back-slope. (2) The smaller (bigger) the slope is, the smaller (bigger) the glacier erosion intensity is. (3) The smaller (bigger) the ice discharge is, the smaller (bigger) the glacier erosion intensity is. In the glacier erosion process, the erosion rate of the ice-facing slope is always greater than that of the back-slope. Therefore, the glacial trough always develops into more straight form. This paper comes to the conclusion that the shape evolution of the glacial trough is controlled mainly by the erosion mechanism of the glacier. Thereby, the glacial trough prefers straight geometry. The Tailan River originates on the southern slope of Tumur Peak, the largest center of modern glaciation in the Tianshan Range. Five moraine complexes and associated fluvioglacial deposits in this valley record a complex history of Quaternary glacial cycles and landform evolution. Electron spin resonance (ESR) dating of glacial sediments was carried out using germanium (Ge) centers in quartz grains, which are sensitive to both sunlight and grinding. Based on the dating results as well as geomorphic and stratigraphic data, the Piyazilike end moraines (the second moraine complex) were deposited during Neoglaciation (the largest glacial advances during the last 3–4 ka in western China) and an early Holocene glacial advance, the third set of moraines was deposited in marine isotope stage (MIS) 2–4, and the glacial landforms of the Tailan glaciation (the fourth moraine complex), which include hummocky moraines on the piedmont, were formed in MIS 6 (penultimate glaciation). The end moraines of the innermost moraine complex (the first moraine complex) are inferred to have been deposited during the Little Ice Age (LIA). Thus the landforms and dates indicate compound valley glaciers from the LIA to MIS 2–4, and piedmont glaciers during MIS 6. The oldest tills studied belong to the “Kokdepsang Glacial Stage”, and occur on a high plateau. Based on similar glacial landforms (glacial deposits on a high plateau and a high glacial terrace) and their ESR ages in adjacent valleys on the southern slope of Tumur Peak, the Kokdepsang Glacial Stage is assigned to MIS 12. Abstract: The Bogeda Peak area is the largest center of modern glaciation in the eastern Tianshan range in China. Four moraine complexes and associated fluvioglacial deposits are well preserved in the valleys, indicating multiple Quaternary glaciations in this region. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and electron spin resonance (ESR) dating were used to determine the ages of the glacial tills and associated sediments in the Gubanbogeda and Heigou valleys. A total of eighteen samples were collected from moraines and fluvioglacial deposits. Fourteen samples were dated using OSL with a single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) protocol, and the other four samples were analyzed by ESR dating of germanium (Ge) centers in quartz grains, which are sensitive to both sunlight and grinding. The results indicate that the fluvioglacial deposits are more suitable for OSL dating than the tills. Most ages show good agreement with the geological setting and field investigations, and the OSL and ESR ages are consistent with each other for the samples collected from the fourth set of moraines. Based on the ages as well as geomorphic and stratigraphic, the first and second moraine complexes of the Bogeda Peak area were deposited during the Little Ice Age (LIA) and Neoglaciation respectively. The low and high glacial terraces of the third set of moraines in the Gubanbogeda and Heigou valleys were deposited during marine oxygen isotope stages (MIS) 2 and 4. The most complete Neoproterozoic successions in south China contain three diamictite intervals in the Changan, Tiesiao, and Nantuo Formations. The youngest and most widespread Nantuo glacial deposit overlies the Datangpo Formation and underlies the fossilrich Donshantuo Formation. Previous authors have correlated the Nantuo diamictite to either Sturtian or Marinoan glacial deposits elsewhere. Here we report sedimentary and δ13C chemostratigraphic data of the Doushantuo cap dolostone, which overlies the Nantuo Formation. Facies-dependent variation in δ13C is interpreted as evidence for spatial heterogeneity in δ13C and/or temporal diachroneity in the initiation of cap carbonate sedimentation. Sedimentary and chemostratigraphic data are indicative of a Marinoan age for the Nantuo glaciation. This inference is supported by a new U-Pb zircon age of 663 ± 4 Ma from a tuffaceous bed in the Datangpo Formation. The new date and other isotopic ages from south China constrain the age of the Changan and Tiesiao glaciation(s) as between 761 ± 8 Ma and 663 ± 4 Ma, and the Nantuo glaciation as between 663 ± 4 Ma and 599 ± 4 Ma. • The well-preserved micro-macro scale subglacial forms and erosional landscapes are widely presented on the surface of the residual Mesoproterozoic quartzite basement rocks in North China. • A continental ice sheet gradually advanced from highland in the north to shallow sea in the south during Luoquan glacial period in North China. • An icehouse environment of Proterozoic-Phanerozoic transition period in global greenhouse background is indicated. Diamictites of late Ediacaran to early Cambrian age (ca. 551–518 Ma) are widespread across Southeast–Central Asia, with the Luoquan Formation particularly well preserved along the southern margin of the North China craton. A basal unconformity, comprising striations and p-forms interpreted to have been produced subglacially, was cut into Mesoproterozoic basement. Integrating new observations on the basal unconformity with the stratigraphy and sedimentology of the Luoquan Formation, an unequivocal glacial origin is demonstrated. The succession evolves from massive or stratified diamictite at the base to laminated fine-siltstone with dropstones upward, and is capped by siltstone with or without dropstones on the top. These lithological combinations represent a glacial sedimentary succession deposited recording progressive retreat of the ice margin. Based on multiple palaeoflow measurements, data from 7 new measured sections, and facies analysis, a new paleogeographic model is proposed. Detailed sedimentological investigations of the Cryogenian glacial deposits are critical for constraining the true nature of the Sturtian and Marinoan glaciations. The entire succession of the Nantuo Formation, which corresponds to the Marinoan glaciation, is well developed in South China. Here a detailed lithological and sedimentological analysis of two cores of the Nantuo Formation in Guizhou, South China, is presented in which two continuous ice advance–retreat cycles are identified. The base consists of a massive diamictite lithofacies that is representative of glacier-dominated subaqueous debris flow deposits. These proximal glaciomarine deposits are overlain by a gravel-free sandy mudstone lithofacies that is lacking in diamictites, which implies distal glaciomarine deposits. This ice advance–retreat sedimentary cycle is overlain by a weakly laminated diamictite lithofacies, which represents subaqueous debris flow deposits that formed during the second episode of ice advance. These proximal glaciomarine deposits are overlain by an interbedded sandstone–mudstone lithofacies, which is indicative of distal glaciomarine deposits that formed during another episode of ice retreat. These sedimentary cycles imply that the climate switched twice from relatively warm to extremely cold and back during the Marinoan glaciation. The global sea-level and sedimentary environments fluctuated in response to these climate changes. This co-evolution of the climate, sea-level, and sedimentary environments, which is represented by the lithofacies and sedimentary sequence of the Nantuo Formation, as well as the corresponding strata of other sections worldwide, suggests that the Marinoan glaciation is characterized by a progressive and dynamic course. Driven by climate change, periods of dominating glacial and fluvial erosion have both sculpted mountain ranges during the Quaternary. To understand the evolution of mountain landforms, there is considerable interest in knowing which erosion agent leads to more incision, how glacial thermal regime impacts erosion and landscape development, and whether glacial erosion can result in increased relief. To investigate the relative efficiency of glacial and fluvial erosion, and the influence of glacial thermal regime on topography, we compare two different mountain ranges–the Qionglai Shan (monsoonal temperate glaciation) and Lenglongling (subcontinental glaciation) in western China. We use a 1-D model to construct presumptive fluvial longitudinal profiles if glaciation had not occurred, and compare these with the actual glacial profiles to obtain relative incision rates of fluvial and glacial erosion. Results demonstrate that glacial incision is smaller than fluvial incision in Lenglongling and larger than fluvial incision in the Qionglai Shan, which may be influenced by different tectonics and glacier types. Topographic analysis of glacial and fluvial valleys with similar drainage areas show that glacial erosion results in valley widening, local valley relief increase induced by isostatic uplift, and slope gradient increase in Lenglongling. However, there is no local valley relief and slope increase observed in the Qionglai Shan, which may reflect slope process responses to threshold hillslope limiting the height above valley bottoms. • Different relative efficiency of glacial and fluvial incision on the Tibetan Plateau. • Relief increase is influenced by isostatic uplift and threshold hillslope angles. • Tectonic uplift and glacier types control incision rate variations for rivers and glaciers. The Yangtze Plain (floodplains in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River) is a region with numerous lakes, including the three largest freshwater lakes in China, i.e. Poyang Lake (PYL), Dongting Lake (DTL), and Taihu Lake (THL). The formation mechanism of these lakes offers insights into the ongoing debate concerning the interaction between tectonic activity, climate, sea-level, human impact, and Earth-surface processes. Previous studies have usually focused on individual lakes, so there remains no over-arching and consistent framework for lake formation in the region as a whole. Here we review published sedimentary and chronological records on the above three lakes and propose that sea-level change has determined their formation. During the last glacial maximum (LGM; ca 30–20 ka), with a sea-level >120 m lower than present, a landscape of incised valleys and interfluves prevailed over the entire Yangtze Plain, including the DTL area, which is >1400 km upstream from the modern river mouth, and there was no large lake on the plain. The lakes emerged in the Holocene, although more precise ages await further investigations. The glacial sea-level lowstand, with concomitant headward incision, was responsible for the extensive deeply incised landscape of the LGM, whereas the Holocene high sea-level, with resultant infilling of the incised valleys, accounted for the formation of lakes. This sea-level forcing hypothesis suggests a more far-reaching influence of sea-level change on the Yangtze Plain, and a closer relationship between Earth-surface processes and glacial–interglacial cycles (global climate) than is commonly believed. According to our newly hypothesized climate-controlled geomorphological (CCG) model, it is very likely that similar lake-forming processes could have occurred multiple times during earlier glacial–interglacial cycles, and that this pattern might also have occurred in many other river systems in the eastern coastal areas of China, as well as in other similar river plains worldwide, thus having an important role in shaping modern coastal-plain landscapes. • Neoproterozoic cap carbonates are discovered on the western margin of North China Craton. • The Zhengmuguan Formation in North China may provide evidence for mid-late Ediacaran glaciation. • High spatial resolution of major, trace and rare earth elements and carbon analysis are used for the interpretation of depositional environments. The late Neoproterozoic Era was characterized by dramatic transitions in climate, including Snowball Earth glaciation, and in the increasing oxygenation state of the atmosphere and oceans. However, late Neoproterozoic glacial deposits are poorly documented in North China. To better understand the Neoproterozoic glacial events in North China, we investigated five sections along a north-south transect across the Helan Mountains capturing a transition from shelf margin to intrashelf basin. This effort revealed an excellent exposure of Neoproterozoic diamictite and associated carbonate succession (Zhengmuguan Formation) on the western shelf margin of North China. Sedimentary features in the diamictite indicate that it might be a glacial sequence partially influenced by sediment gravity flows, with values for the Chemical Index of Alternation (CIA) consistent with cold, arid depositional environment. The overlying carbonate succession is sporadic, with exposures confined mostly to southern areas that disappear to the north. Identification of the Zhengmuguan sequence as a cap carbonate is based on the occurrence of distinctive attributes that are widely found in typical Neoproterozoic cap carbonates around the world. The ∼1.6-m-thick cap carbonate consists of a lower thinly laminated dolomite and an upper thick-bedded dolomite, directly overlying the top of the Zhengmuguan glacial diamictite. Based on field and petrographic observations and high-resolution geochemical analyses of major, trace, and rare earth elements; organic carbon isotopes (δ13C org); and total organic carbon (TOC), we are able to interpret the depositional environments and the possible origin of the cap carbonate. The occurrence of late Ediacaran fossils in the overlying Tuerkeng Formation imply that the Zhengmuguan Formation is mid-late Ediacaran and thus may represent a mid-late Ediacaran glaciation. Our petrographic and geochemical results suggest the Zhengmuguan cap carbonate was initially deposited via glacial meltwater with significant inputs from continental weathering subsequently overprinted by upwelling anoxic deep seawaters along a continental margin. In summary, our data from a poorly known mid-late Ediacaran cap carbonate capture a high-resolution record of shifting climatic and oceanographic conditions of at least regional importance. The uncertainties of these interpretations are high, but the potential importance of these findings justifies the need to publish the data and our conclusions—along with the unavoidable caveats that come with any poorly dated frontier section.
