Northwest Africa 6963 (NWA 6963) is a coarse-grained, gabbroic Martian meteorite that further extends our Martian sample collection, both compositionally and texturally. Gabbroic shergottite NWA 6963 provides direct petrologic evidence of intrusive igneous conditions within the Martian crust. Here, we analyzed geochemical zoning profiles and microstructural-crystallographic information from electron backscattered diffraction of augite and pigeonite to constrain the crystallization history of NWA 6963. Compositional zoning profiles reveal pyroxenes with augite or pigeonite cores mantled by Fe-rich pigeonite rims. Our results suggest complex pyroxene textures and zoning profiles observed in pyroxenes in NWA 6963 are due to pyroxene accumulation from a crystallizing magma in a large intrusive environment (sill or magma chamber); however, without geologic context or companion samples, it is currently impossible to rule out accumulation at the base of a very large (>>100 m) differentiated flow.

Here, we calculate the mineralogy of the Martian lower crust and upper mantle as a function of pressure and temperature with depth using four bulk compositions (average crust, Gusev basalt, olivine‐phyric shergottite, and primitive average mantle). We then use this mineralogy to extract rock properties such as density and seismic velocities, describe their changes with varying conditions and geotherms, and make predictions for the crust–mantle boundary. Mineralogically, all compositions produce garnet, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene in varying proportions at high pressures, with differences in minor minerals (spinel, ilmenite, rutile, and/or K‐feldspar). According to our calculations, the average crust and Gusev basalt compositions have the potential to yield higher densities than the average mantle composition, particularly for thicker crusts and/or colder geotherms. Therefore, recycling of the Martian crust into the mantle could occur through the process of crustal delamination, if not kinetically inhibited. However, our results show that, depending on crustal thickness, the crust may not be easily distinguishable from the mantle in seismic properties.

Long-wavelength magnetic anomalies (LWMA) are broad scale variations of the magnetic field that are usually observed at high altitudes with amplitudes ranging up to about 20 nT. The source of these anomalies has typically been assumed to reside within the crust with negligible contributions from the lithospheric mantle. Recent work on the magnetization of mantle xenoliths suggests a possible lithospheric mantle contribution to LWMA, depending on tectonic setting and local geotherm. Here, we investigate the potential contribution of the lithospheric mantle to LWMA across two contrasting lithospheric geotherms: cratons and hotspots. To constrain the range of possible mantle contributions to satellite-observable LWMA in these settings, we develop a Monte Carlo suite of forward models of magnetic anomalies patterned after the mantle portions of the Siberian craton, the Hawai'i hotspot, and the French Massif Central plume. The models incorporate the current geotherms, the pressure dependence of the Curie temperature of magnetite, and the statistical distributions of rock magnetic data from mantle xenoliths in the specific regions. The Siberian craton shows the highest potential contribution of the mantle to LWMA with amplitudes of a few nT over wavelengths scaling to the long-axis of the craton. The Hawai'i hotspot region displays a potential contribution from the lithospheric mantle to satellite-measured magnetic anomalies on the order of 1 nT, while the Massif Central plume regions shows an insignificant contribution to satellite magnetic anomalies from lithospheric mantle. When compared with observed lithospheric total field anomalies derived from Swarm satellite data, the results show that the lithospheric mantle may contribute a few tens of percent to LWMA observed at satellite altitudes in specific regions depending on the average remanent magnetization in mantle minerals, the thickness of magnetized mantle (which depends on the geotherm), and the spatial extent of the region under consideration.

Volcanic features and impact craters are ubiquitous features on Mars, and hydrothermal systems associated with the production of these features should have been abundant in Mars’s early history. These hydrothermal systems represent potentially habitable environments and are therefore a high priority for continued investigations of the Martian crust. Here we present a Mars analog study where basaltic magma intruded water-bearing sediments to produce a high-temperature (as high as ∼700°C) hydrothermal system, which we use to constrain the potential habitability of similar systems on Mars via mineralogy and geochemistry including S, C, and O isotopic systematics. Our analog site suggests evidence for a habitable environment once the system cooled below 120°C and the potential presence of microbial activity based on the combination of dolomite and C-isotopic systems in the same sample. These findings highlight the importance of future missions to investigate the interface of sediments with magmas and/or late-stage impact melts where microbial life may have taken hold when temperature conditions allowed.

Low‐grade metamorphic hydrous minerals and carbonates occur in various settings on Mars and in Martian meteorites. We present constraints on the stability of prehnite, zeolites, serpentine, and carbonates by modeling the influence of H2O‐CO2 fluids during low‐grade metamorphism in the Martian crust using compositions of a Martian basalt and an ultramafic cumulate. In basaltic compositions with 5 wt% fluid, our models predict prehnite in less oxidized, CO2‐poor conditions (≤0.44 mol kg−1 CO2) on warmer geotherms of 20 °C km−1. At fluid‐saturated conditions, epidote and laumontite are replaced by quartz, calcite, chlorite, and muscovite. In ultramafic compositions with 5 wt% fluid, antigorite (serpentine) is stable at CO2‐poor conditions of ≤0.33 mol kg−1, while talc forms at 0.05–0.56 mol kg−1 CO2. At fluid‐saturated conditions, antigorite is replaced by talc and chlorite, and at higher X(CO2) by magnesite and quartz. Our models therefore suggest that prehnite, zeolites, and serpentine have formed in a CO2‐poor environment on Mars implying that fluids during their formation either did not contain high amounts of CO2 or had degassed CO2. Carbonates and potentially talc would have formed in the presence of a CO2‐bearing fluid and therefore at different alteration stages than for prehnite, zeolites, and serpentine either in the same hydrothermal event during which the fluid composition changed gradually due to cooling and precipitation or by separate and successive alteration events with fluids of different compositions.

NASA’s search for habitable environments has focused on alteration mineralogy of the Martian crust and the formation of hydrous minerals, because they reveal information about the fluid and environmental conditions from which they precipitated. Extensive work has focused on the formation of alteration minerals at low temperatures, with limited work investigating metamorphic or high-temperature alteration. We have investigated such a site as an analog for Mars: a mafic dike on the Colorado Plateau that was hydrothermally altered from contact with groundwater as it was emplaced in the porous and permeable Jurassic Entrada sandstone. Our results show evidence for fluid mobility removing Si and K but adding S, Fe, Ca, and possibly Mg to the system as alteration progresses. Mineralogically, all samples contain calcite, hematite, and kaolinite; with most samples containing minor anatase, barite, halite, and dolomite. The number of alteration minerals increase with alteration. The hydrothermal system that formed during interaction of the magma (heat source) and groundwater would have been a habitable environment once the system cooled below ∼120 °C. The mineral assemblage is similar to alteration minerals seen within the Martian crust from orbit, including those at Gusev and Jezero Craters. Therefore, based on our findings, and extrapolating them to the Martian crust, these sites may represent habitable environments which would call for further exploration and sample return of such hydrothermally altered igneous materials.

Martian meteorites are our only samples from Mars, thus far. Currently, there are a total of 252 individual samples originating from ≥11 ejection sites with crystallization ages varying from 4.5...

Idunn Mons is a shield volcano located in the Imdr Regio large igneous rise, a Venusian equivalent to a hotspot geologic province on Earth. Recent studies using emissivity data from ESA's Venus Express Mission, together with experimental laboratory studies on the alteration of volcanic materials on Venus conditions, suggest that Idunn Mons is a possible site for very recent or even ongoing volcanic activity. In this work we carried out geologic mapping of Idunn Mons to characterize its materials and structures and to establish its geologic evolution. This study suggests that Idunn Mons is analogous to oceanic island volcanoes on Earth, with volcanic constructive phases that alternate with flank collapse episodes, resulting in its flat-topped summit morphology. These flank collapse events can be related to the intimate temporal and spatial relationship existing between Idunn Mons and Olapa Chasma, a rift that dominates the large igneous rise and relates to the volcano evolution, suggesting that this is not simply a candidate site for active volcanism but also for active tectonism.

Ultramafic pseudotachylytes have been regarded as earthquake fossils formed at mantle depths (i.e., >30 km). Here we show that pseudotachylytes hosted by ultramafic rocks from three localities have distinct magnetic properties. Fresh host-peridotites contain only small amounts of coarse-grained magnetite. In contrast, the ultramafic pseudotachylytes contain variable amounts of significantly finer magnetite that formed coseismically through melting. Among each locality, magnetite abundance in the pseudotachylytes ranges over several orders of magnitude (4~2000 ppm), and magnetic grain size varies considerably (from single domain to multidomain). Because the host-peridotites are compositionally similar, the pseudotachylyte magnetic properties are interpreted to primarily reflect the physical and cooling conditions prevailing during seismic slip. Further, the examination of laboratory-produced ultramafic pseudotachylytes shows that quenching does not produce superfine magnetite. We hypothesize that the magnetic properties of ultramafic pseudotachylytes are controlled by fO2 and in consequence vary systematically with depth of formation. Therefore these properties can be used to assess if the ruptures producing the earthquakes that these pseudotachylytes represent nucleated at actual mantle depths or at shallow depths during exhumation of mantle rocks.

Although nucleation of magnetite and/or hematite along dislocations upon oxidation of olivine has been observed by many workers, the effect of oxidation on the magnetic properties of the sample with specific mineralogical alterations has not been studied. Therefore, we investigate this problem using a set of time series 1 bar oxidation experiments at 600 and 900 °C. Results show rapid olivine oxidation and alteration at both 600 and 900 °C, forming magnetite and hematite associated with a change from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic behavior after oxidation. Magnetite and hematite nucleate along dislocations and impurities in the crystal structure, along with surface coatings and within cracks in the crystals.\ud \ud Fresh, unaltered mantle xenoliths containing magnetite have been interpreted as having formed in cold tectonic regimes in the mantle, rather than through oxidation during or after ascent. Mantle xenoliths rapidly ascend through the mantle with estimates of the ascent of up to 90 km/h (3 GPa/h) based on the diffusion profile of water in mantle olivine. The rates correspond to xenoliths ascending through the mantle over hours and not days or weeks. Our results show that olivine oxidation and alteration can occur in days to weeks at 600 °C and within minutes at 900 °C. Therefore, if the xenolithic material is transported to the surface in a cold magma (at temperatures ≤600 °C), then the timescale of ascent is likely not long enough for oxidation to cause magnetite formation or a ferromagnetic signature to occur. However, if the material is transported in a hot oxidized basaltic magma (with temperatures ≥900 °C), then oxidation can cause magnetite formation and a ferromagnetic signature.

Light emitted from Venus’s surface can be viewed through spectral “windows” in its atmosphere, in the near-infrared (NIR) around 1000 nanometer (nm) wavelengths. The NIR emissivity of Venus’s surface can constrain rock types and their weathering state; emissivities can be measured directly or calculated from reflectances. We measured the reflectances of igneous and sedimentary rocks at Venus’s surface temperature, 400 °C–500 °C at 850 and 950 nm; samples were heated in a box furnace in air, illuminated by light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and imaged with a modified charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. Reflectances were also measured at 25 °C from 350 to 1400 nm. Rock reflectances at 850 and 950 nm and 400 °C–500 °C are nearly identical to those at 25 °C, except for the effects of nanophase hematite forming on some surfaces. Fresh basalts have reflectances (high and low temperatures) near 7.5%; a leucogranite similarly has reflectances near 50%. Pigmentary hematite has nearly identical reflectances at high- and low-temperature at these wavelengths. Pigmentary hematite appears dark brown 400 °C–500 °C because its absorption edge has shifted to beyond the limit of human vision. These rock reflectances imply that basalts should have emissivities near 0.9, and granite (and similar felsic rocks) should have lower emissivities ∼0.5. Thus, basalt and felsic rock should be easily distinguished in NIR emissivity measurements of Venus’s surface, such as are baselined in recent Venus mission proposals. Other sedimentary rocks should have even lower emissivities: quartz sand at around ∼0.3, and anhydrite as low as 0.1.

Potassic-chloro-hastingsite has been found in melt inclusions in MIL 03346, its paired stones, and NWA 5790. It is some of the most chlorine-rich amphibole ever analyzed. In this article, we evaluate what crystal chemistry, terrestrial analogs, and experiments have shown about how chlorine-dominant amphibole (chloro-amphibole) forms and apply these insights to the nakhlites. Chloro-amphibole is rare, with about a dozen identified localities on Earth. It is always rich in potassium and iron and poor in titanium. In terrestrial settings, its presence has been interpreted to result from medium to high-grade alteration (>400 °C) of a protolith by an alkali and/or iron chloride-rich aqueous fluid. Ferrous chloride fluids exsolved from mafic magmas can cause such alteration, as can crustal fluids that have reacted with rock and lost H2O in preference to chloride, resulting in concentrated alkali chloride fluids. In the case of the nakhlites, an aqueous alkali-ferrous chloride fluid was exsolved from the parental melt as it crystallized. This aqueous chloride fluid itself likely unmixed into chloride-dominant and water-dominant fluids. Chloride-dominant fluid was trapped in some melt inclusions and reacted with the silicate contents of the inclusion to form potassic-chloro-hastingsite.

Martian magmas are thought to be rich in chlorine compared with their terrestrial counterparts. Here, we experimentally investigate the effect of chlorine on liquidus depression and near-liquidus crystallization of olivine-phyric shergottite NWA 6234 and compare these results with previous experimental results on the effect of chlorine on near-liquidus crystallization of the surface basalts Humphrey and Fastball. Previous experimental results showed that the change in liquidus temperature is dependent on the bulk composition of the basalt. The effect of chlorine on liquidus depression is greater for lower SiO2 and higher Al2O3 magmas than for higher SiO2 and lower Al2O3 magmas. The bulk composition for this study has lower Al2O3 and higher FeO contents than previous work; therefore, we provide additional constraints on the effect of the bulk composition on the influence of chlorine on near-liquidus crystallization. High pressure and temperature crystallization experiments were performed at 1 GPa on a synthetic basalt, of the bulk composition of NWA 6234, with 0–4 wt% Cl added to the sample as AgCl. The results are consistent with previous notions that with increasing wt% Cl in the melt, the crystallization temperature decreases. Importantly, our results have a liquidus depression ∆T (°C) from added chlorine that is consistent with the difference in bulk composition and suggest a dependence on both the bulk Al2O3 and FeO content. Our results suggest that the addition of chlorine to the Martian mantle may lower magma genesis temperatures and potentially aid in the petrogenesis of Martian magmas.

We conducted a petrologic study of apatite within 12 Martian meteorites, including 11 shergottites and one basaltic regolith breccia. These data were combined with previously published data to gain a better understanding of the abundance and distribution of volatiles in the Martian interior. Apatites in individual Martian meteorites span a wide range of compositions, indicating they did not form by equilibrium crystallization. In fact, the intrasample variation in apatite is best described by either fractional crystallization or crustal contamination with a Cl-rich crustal component. We determined that most Martian meteorites investigated here have been affected by crustal contamination and hence cannot be used to estimate volatile abundances of the Martian mantle. Using the subset of samples that did not exhibit crustal contamination, we determined that the enriched shergottite source has 36–73 ppm H2O and the depleted source has 14–23 ppm H2O. This result is consistent with other observed geochemical differences between enriched and depleted shergottites and supports the idea that there are at least two geochemically distinct reservoirs in the Martian mantle. We also estimated the H2O, Cl, and F content of the Martian crust using known crust-mantle distributions for incompatible lithophile elements. We determined that the bulk Martian crust has ~1410 ppm H2O, 450 ppm Cl, and 106 ppm F, and Cl and H2O are preferentially distributed toward the Martian surface. The estimate of crustal H2O results in a global equivalent surface layer (GEL) of ~229 m, which can account for at least some of the surface features on Mars attributed to flowing water and may be sufficient to support the past presence of a shallow sea on Mars' surface.

Previous estimates of the volatile contents of Martian basalts, and hence their source regions, ranged from nearly volatile-free through estimates similar to those found in terrestrial subduction zones. Here, we use the bulk chemistry of Martian meteorites, along with Martian apatite and amphibole chemistry, to constrain the volatile contents of the Martian interior. Our estimates show that the volatile content of the source region for the Martian meteorites is similar to the terrestrial Mid-Ocean-Ridge Mantle source. Chlorine is enriched compared with the depleted terrestrial mantle but is similar to the terrestrial enriched source region; fluorine is similar to the terrestrial primitive mantle; and water is consistent with the terrestrial mantle. Our results show that Martian magmas were not volatile saturated; had water/chlorine and water/fluorine ratios ~0.4–18; and are most similar, in terms of volatiles, to terrestrial MORBs. Presumably, there are variations in volatile content in the Martian interior as suggested by apatite compositions, but more bulk chemical data, especially for fluorine and water, are required to investigate these variations. Finally, the Noachian Martian interior, as exemplified by surface basalts and NWA 7034, may have had higher volatile contents.

Bulk chemical composition is a fundamental property of a planetary material, rock or regolith, and can be used to constrain the properties and history of a material, and by extension its parent body, including its potential for habitability. Here, we investigate how uncertainties in bulk major element analyses can affect inferences derived from those analyses, including rock classification by total-alkalis–silica (TAS); Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA); a tectonic discriminant for magma genesis; and the inferred mantle pressure and temperature of a basaltic magma’s origin. Uncertainties for actual spacecraft instruments (Mars Exploration Rover and Mars Science Laboratory (MER/MSL), Alpha Proton X-Ray Spectroscopy (APXS), and Mars Science Laboratory: Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (MSL LIBS)) and a suggested uncertainty level for analyses on Venus (Venus Exploration Targets (VExT) Workshop) are higher than those of standard Earth-based analyses (e.g., by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICPOES)). We propagate the uncertainties from each analysis type to the derived parameters, both implicitly and via boot-strap (Monte Carlo) methods. Our calculations show that the uncertainties of APXS and VExT are greater than those for ICPOES, but they still allow useful inferences about rock type and history. Our results show that the uncertainties of MSL LIBS analyses are significantly larger than the other techniques, and can provide only limited constraints on rock types or histories. Any instruments chosen for future mission must have uncertainties of the chemical analyses small enough to meet the mission’s overall scientific objectives.

Alteration of basalt on the surface of Venus should be dominated by nanophase hematite and sulfate coatings, but the timescale of oxidation and how that affects spectroscopic measurements has not been extensively studied. The oxidation rate and the effect on reflectance spectroscopy are needed to constrain the age of lava flows with high emissivity that were previously measured by the European Space Agency's Venus Express Mission. Here we investigate the effects of oxidation on the mineralogy and visible to near-infrared (VNIR) spectroscopy of augite, diopside, pyroxenite, and an alkali basalt. The experimental and spectroscopic data are used to constrain the surface basaltic weathering rates for Venus. Further, we use the spectroscopic measurements to constrain how quickly igneous signatures would degrade during oxidation of the surface. Our results show that basalt and olivine oxidize within weeks to months on the surface of Venus and their VNIR results are dominated by hematite. Pyroxenes take longer to alter with minor hematite forming on the surface—largely in cracks. Instead, Fe3+ is predominantly forming in the crystal structure. Our work suggests that if basalt on the surface of Venus contains olivine and/or glass, the high emissivity lavas previously measured would be only a few years old. If, instead, those high emissivity lavas are fully crystalline and contain no olivine or glass (which is unlikely), they would still only be decades to hundreds of years old. Therefore, this is consistent with recent work suggesting that Venus is volcanically active today.

Amphibole in chassignite melt inclusions provides valuable information about the volatile content of the original interstitial magma, but also shock and postshock processes. We have analyzed amphibole and other phases from NWA 2737 melt inclusions, and we evaluate these data along with published values to constrain the crystallization Cl and H2O content of phases in chassignite melt inclusions and the effects of shock on these amphibole grains. Using a model for the Cl/OH exchange between amphibole and melt, we estimate primary crystallization OH contents of chassignite amphiboles. SIMS analysis shows that amphibole from NWA 2737 currently has 0.15 wt% H2O. It has lost ~0.6 wt% H2O from an initial 0.7–0.8 wt% H2O due to intense shock. Chassigny amphibole had on average 0.3–0.4 wt% H2O and suffered little net loss of H2O due to shock. NWA 2737 amphibole has δD ≈ +3700‰; it absorbed Martian atmosphere-derived heavy H in the aftermath of shock. Chassigny amphibole, with δD ≤ +1900‰, incorporated less heavy H. Low H2O/Cl ratios are inferred for the primitive chassignite magma, which had significant effects on melting and crystallization. Volatiles released by the degassing of Martian magma were more Cl-rich than on Earth, resulting in the high Cl content of Martian surface materials

Studies of rocks in Gale Crater and clasts within the Martian meteorite breccia Northwest Africa (NWA) 7034 (and paired stones) have expanded our knowledge of the diversity of igneous rocks that make up the Martian crust beyond those compositions exhibited in the meteorite collection or analyzed at any other landing site. Therefore, the magmas that gave rise to these rocks may have been generated at significantly different conditions in the Martian mantle than those derived from previously studied rocks. Here we build upon our previous models of basalt formation based on rocks analyzed in Gusev Crater and Meridiani Planum to the new models of basalt formation for compositions from Gale Crater and a clast in meteorite NWA 7034. Estimates for the mantle potential temperature, TP based on Noachian age rock analyses in Gale Crater, Gusev Crater, and Bounce Rock in Meridiani Planum, and a vitrophyre clast in NWA 7034 are within error, which suggests that the calculated average TP of 1450 ± 70°C may represent an average global mantle temperature during the Noachian. The TP estimates for the Hesperian and Amazonian, based on orbital analyses of the chemistry of the crust, are lower in temperature than our estimates for the Noachian, which is consistent with simple convective cooling of the interior of Mars. However, the TP estimates from the young meteorites are significantly higher than the estimates based on surface chemistry and are consistent with localized “hot spot” melting and not heating up of the interior.

The chemical compositions of shergottite meteorites, basaltic rocks from Mars, provide a broad view of the origins and differentiation of these Martian magmas. The shergottite basalts are subdivided based on their Al contents: high-Al basalts (Al > 5% wt) are distinct from low-Al basalts and olivine-phyric basalts (both with Al

We report scapolite in a melt inclusion in olivine in Nakhla, which is the first occurrence of Cl-scapolite found in a martian meteorite. Using terrestrial metamorphic experiments and modeling we constrain its origin. Cl-rich scapolite in Nakhla is consistent with formation from either a late stage Cl-rich, water-poor magma or magmatic Cl-rich hydrothermal brine at a minimum temperature of 700 °C. The temperature of hydrothermal activity recorded by the Cl-scapolite is significantly higher than the temperatures recorded by alteration minerals in Nakhla, and the fluid was Cl-rich, not CO 2 -rich. Our results demonstrate that high-temperature Cl-rich fluids were present within the martian crust, and any potential biologic activity would have to survive in these high temperatures and saline fluids. Halophiles can thrive in NaCl-rich systems but at significantly lower temperatures than those recorded by the scapolite. During cooling of the fluid, the system could have reached a habitable state for halophiles. Importantly, halophiles can survive the conditions of space if they are encased in salt crystals, and therefore chlorine-rich phases present an opportunity to investigate for extant life both on the surface of Mars and in martian meteorites.

Meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 6963 was classified as a basaltic shergottite based on mineralogy, but here we show that it is a gabbroic rock with a quartz-alkali feldspar intergrowth that represents a late-stage granitic melt. NWA 6963 contains clinopyroxene and maskelynite grains up to 5 mm in length, with minor ferroan olivine, spinel, ilmenite, merrillite, apatite, Fe-sulfides, and high-Si glass. NWA 6963 also contains areas of quartz and alkali-feldspar intergrowths up to ~1 mm in size. Based on mineral abundances and textural analysis, we suggest that NWA 6963 is an intrusive rock similar to a terrestrial gabbro. Infiltration of the martian crust by young gabbroic bodies would suggest that estimates of crustal composition, density, and thickness based on the surface chemistry alone would be problematic and the martian crust may be even more heterogenous than is seen from orbit alone. Investigations of crater walls, where intrusive crustal rocks would be exposed, are needed to discover the launch sites of the shergottites and the full heterogeneity of the martian crust.

We used new analytical and theoretical methods to determine the major and minor element compositions of the primary trapped liquid (PTLs) represented by melt inclusions in olivine and augite in the Martian clinopyroxenite, Nakhla, for comparison with previously proposed compositions for the Nakhla (or nakhlite) parent magma. We particularly focused on obtaining accurate K2O contents, and on testing whether high K2O contents and K2O/Na2O ratios obtained in previous studies of melt inclusions in olivine in Nakhla could have been due to unrepresentative sampling, systematic errors arising from electron microprobe techniques, late alteration of the inclusions, and/or boundary layer effects. Based on analyses of 35 melt inclusions in olivine cores, the PTL in olivine, PTLoliv, contained (by wt) approximately 47% SiO2, 6.3% Al2O3, 9.6% CaO, 1.8% K2O, and 0.9% Na2O, with K2O/Na2O = 2.0. We infer that the high K2O content of PTLoliv is not due to boundary layer effects and represents a real property of the melt from which the host olivine crystallized. This melt was cosaturated with olivine and augite. Its mg# is model-dependent and is constrained only to be ≥19 (equilibrium Fo = 40). Based on analyses of 91 melt inclusions in augite cores, the PTL in augite, PTLaug, contained (by wt) 53–54% SiO2, 7–8% Al2O3, 0.8–1.1% K2O, and 1.1–1.4% Na2O, with K2O/Na2O = 0.7–0.8. This K2O content and K2O/Na2O ratio are significantly higher than inferred in studies of melt inclusions in augite in Nakhla by experimental rehomogenization. PTLaug was saturated only with augite, and in equilibrium with augite cores of mg# 62. PTLaug represents the Nakhla parent magma, and does not evolve to PTLoliv by fractional crystallization. We therefore conclude that olivine cores in Nakhla (and, by extension, other nakhlites) are xenocrystic. We propose that PTLoliv and PTLaug were generated from the same source region. PTLoliv was generated first and emplaced to form olivine-rich cumulate rocks. Shortly thereafter, PTLaug was generated and ascended through these olivine-rich cumulates, incorporating fragments of wallrock that became the xenocrystic olivine cores in Nakhla. The Nakhla (nakhlite) mantle source region was pyroxenitic with some olivine, and could have become enriched in K relative to Na via metasomatism. A high degree of melting of this source produced the silica-poor, alkali-rich magma PTLoliv. Further ascension and decompression of the source led to generation of the silica-rich, relatively alkali-poor magma PTLaug. Potassium-rich magmas like those involved in the formation of the nakhlites represent an important part of the diversity of Martian igneous rocks.

The Mars Exploration Rover Spirit investigated the igneous and alteration mineralogy and chemistry of Home Plate and its surrounding deposits. Here, we focus on using thermochemical modeling to understand the secondary alteration mineralogy at the Home Plate outcrop and surrounding Columbia Hills region in Gusev crater. At high temperatures (300 °C), magnetite occurs at very high W/R ratios, but the alteration assemblage is dominated by chlorite and serpentine over most of the W/R range. Quartz, epidote, and typical high-T phases such as feldspar, pyroxene, and garnet occur at low W/R. At epithermal temperatures (150 °C), hematite occurs at very high W/R. A range of phyllosilicates, including kaolinite, nontronite, chlorite, and serpentine are precipitated at specific W/R. Amphibole, with garnet, feldspar, and pyroxene occur at low W/R. If the CO2 content of the system is high, the assemblage is dominated by carbonate with increasing amounts of an SiO2-phase, kaolinite, carpholite, and chlorite with lower W/R. At temperatures of hydrous weathering (13 °C), the oxide phase is goethite, silicates are chlorite, nontronite, and talc, plus an SiO2-phase. In the presence of CO2, the mineral assemblage at high W/R remains the same, and only at low W/R, i.e., with increasing salinity, carbonate precipitates. The geochemical gradients observed at Home Plate are attributed to short-lived, initially high (300 °C) temperature, but fast cooling events, which are in agreement with our models and our interpretation of a multistage alteration scenario of Home Plate and Gusev in general. Alteration at various temperatures and during different geological processes within Gusev crater has two effects, both of which increase the habitability of the local environment: precipitation of hydrous sheet silicates, and formation of a brine, which might contain elements essential for life in diluted, easily accessible form.

Understanding the distribution and behavior of volatiles in martian magmas and the corresponding mantle provides crucial constraints on planetary properties such as mantle melting temperatures and melt production, as well as the availability of magmatic fluids for any potential occurrences of life. Current evaluations of the pre-eruptive volatile concentrations of martian magmas are based on analyses of hydrous minerals in martian meteorites such as apatite, because they record the volatile content (OH, F, Cl) and the halogen and water fugacities of their parental magmas. Estimates for the pre-eruptive volatile contents of martian basaltic magmas range from nearly anhydrous to 2 wt% H2O. However, these magmas may have potentially degassed upon eruption and/or emplacement losing their magmatic water while retaining some halogens. Here we report apatite compositional data from the martian meteorite NWA 6234, an intermediate olivine–phyric shergottite, and calculate F2, Cl2, H2O fugacity ratios for its parental magma. Apatites in NWA 6234 contain the highest observed OH–F content among martian meteorites and importantly have volatile fugacity ratios similar to terrestrial basalts. This suggests that the actual content of fluorine, chlorine and water of the martian mantle, parental to SNC meteorites, are higher than previously thought and are similar to the volatile content of the terrestrial mid-ocean ridge basalt source region.

Knowledge of Martian igneous and mantle compositions is crucial for understanding Mars’ mantle evolution, including early differentiation, mantle convection, and the chemical alteration at the surface. Primitive magmas provide the most direct information about their mantle source regions, but most Martian meteorites either contain cumulate olivine or crystallized from fractionated melts. The new Martian meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 6234 is an olivine-phyric shergottite. Its most magnesian olivine cores (Fo78) are in Mg-Fe equilibrium with a magma of the bulk rock composition, suggesting that it represents a melt composition. Thermochemical calculations show that NWA 6234 not only represents a melt composition but is a primitive melt derived from an approximately Fo80 mantle. Thus, NWA 6234 is similar to NWA 5789 and Y 980459 in the sense that all three are olivine-phyric shergottites and represent primitive magma compositions. However, NWA 6234 is of special significance because it represents the first olivine-phyric shergottite from a primitive ferroan magma. On the basis of Al/Ti ratio of pyroxenes in NWA 6234, the minor components in olivine and merrillite, and phosphorus zoning of olivine, we infer that the rock crystallized completely at pressures consistent with conditions in Mars’ upper crust. The textural intergrowths of the two phosphates (merrillite and apatite) indicate that at a very last stage of crystallization, merrillite reacted with an OH-Cl-F-rich melt to form apatite. As this meteorite crystallized completely at depth and never erupted, it is likely that its apatite compositions represent snapshots of the volatile ratios of the source region without being affected by degassing processes, which contain high OH-F content.

Multiple observations from missions to Mars have revealed compelling evidence for a volatile-rich Martian crust. A leading theory contends that eruption of basaltic magmas was the ultimate mechanism of transfer of volatiles from the mantle toward the surface after an initial outgassing related to the crystallization of a magma ocean. However, the concentrations of volatile species in ascending magmas and in their mantle source regions are highly uncertain. This work and this special issue of Meteoritics & Planetary Science summarize the key findings of the workshop on Volatiles in the Martian Interior (Nov. 3–4, 2014), the primary open questions related to volatiles in Martian magmas and their source regions, and the suggestions of the community at the workshop to address these open questions.

Gale Crater, the landing site of the 2011 Mars Science Laboratory mission, formed in the Late Noachian. It is a 150 km diameter complex impact structure with a central mound (Mount Sharp), the original features of which may be transitional between a central peak and peak ring impact structure. The impact might have melted portions of the substrate to a maximum depth of ∼17 km and produced a minimum of 3600 km 3 of impact melt, half of which likely remained within the crater. The bulk of this impact melt would have pooled in an annular depression surrounding the central uplift, creating an impact melt pool as thick as 0.5–1 km. The ejecta blanket surrounding Gale may have been as thick as ∼600 m, which has implications for the amount of erosion that has occurred since Gale Crater formed. After the impact, a hydrothermal system may have been active for several hundred thousand years and a crater lake with associated sediments is likely to have formed. The hydrothermal system, and associated lakes and springs, likely caused mineral alteration and precipitation. In the presence of S-rich host rocks, the alteration phases are modelled to contain sheet silicates, quartz, sulphates, and sulphides. Modelled alteration assemblages may be more complex if groundwater interaction persisted after initial alteration. The warm-water environment might have provided conditions supportive of life. Deep fractures would have allowed for hydraulic connectivity into the deep subsurface, where biotic chemistry (and possibly other evidence of life) may be preserved.

The newly found meteorite Northwest Africa 6234 (NWA 6234) is an olivine (ol)-phyric shergottite that is thought, based on texture and mineralogy, to be paired with Martian shergottite meteorites NWA 2990, 5960, and 6710. We report bulk-rock major- and trace-element abundances (including Li), abundances of highly siderophile elements, Re-Os isotope systematics, oxygen isotope ratios, and the lithium isotope ratio for NWA 6234. NWA 6234 is classified as a Martian shergottite, based on its oxygen isotope ratios, bulk composition, and bulk element abundance ratios, Fe ⁄Mn, Al ⁄ Ti, and Na⁄ Al. The Li concentration and δ 7Li value of NWA 6234 are similar to that of basaltic shergottites Zagami and Shergotty. The rare earth element (REE) pattern for NWA 6234 shows a depletion in the light REE (La-Nd) compared with the heavy REE (Sm-Lu), but not as extreme as the known ‘‘depleted’’ shergottites. Thus, NWA 6234 is suggested to belong to a new category of shergottite that is geochemically ‘‘intermediate’’ in incompatible elements. The only other basaltic or ol-phyric shergottite with a similar ‘‘intermediate’’ character is the basaltic shergottite NWA 480. Rhenium-osmium isotope systematics are consistent with this intermediate character, assuming a crystallization age of 180 Ma. We conclude that NWA 6234 represents an intermediate compositional group between enriched and depleted shergottites and offers new insights into the nature of mantle differentiation and mixing among mantle reservoirs in Mars.

Geologic evidence suggests that the Martian surface and atmospheric conditions underwent major changes in the late Noachian, with a decline in observable water-related surface features, suggestive of a transition to a dryer and colder climate. Based on that assumption, we have modeled the consequences of impacts into a ∼2–6 km-thick cryosphere. We calculate that medium-sized (few 10 s of km diameter) impact craters can physically and/or thermally penetrate through this cryosphere, creating liquid water through the melting of subsurface ice in an otherwise dry and frozen environment. The interaction of liquid water with the target rock produces alteration phases that thermochemical modeling predicts will include hydrous silicates (e.g., nontronite, chlorite, serpentine). Thus, even small impact craters are environments that combine liquid water and the presence of alteration minerals that make them potential sites for life to proliferate. Expanding on the well-known effects of large impact craters on target sites, we conclude that craters as small as ∼5–20 km (depending on latitude) excavate large volumes of material from the subsurface while delivering sufficient heat to create liquid water (through the melting of ground ice) and drive hydrothermal activity. This connection between the surface and subsurface made by the formation of these small, and thus more frequent, impact craters may also represent the most favorable sites to test the hypothesis of life on early Mars.

Fe 2+ –Mg partitioning between olivine and basaltic melt, expressed by the exchange coefficient, K D ol – melt Fe – Mg [=( X melt Mg / X olivine Mg )/( X melt Fe 2 + / X olivine Fe 2 + )] is widely used to check if a rock composition may represent a mantle-derived magma, to demonstrate equilibrium between coexisting olivine and groundmass in mafic–ultramafic systems, both in experiments and in natural assemblages, and to constrain liquid lines of descent where olivine is the dominant fractionating phase. However, K D ol – melt Fe – Mg of 0.30, which is appropriate for understanding most terrestrial basalts petrogenesis may not apply for Martian basalts as K D ol – melt Fe – Mg is known to depend strongly on the melt compositions and Martian systems produce basalts that are distinctly richer in iron than terrestrial basalts. Here we compiled experimental data on olivine–melt equilibria of Martian and terrestrial basalt compositions to parameterize the effect of magma composition on K D ol – melt Fe – Mg and derive the K D ol – melt Fe – Mg applicable for Martian magmatic systems. We find that the equilibrium relationship between olivine and basaltic melt in Martian systems is described by K D ol – melt Fe – Mg of 0.35 ± 0.01. Applying the newly parameterized values of K D ol – melt Fe – Mg to olivine-phyric shergottites suggest that the only known Martian meteorites where the olivine cores and the bulk composition are in equilibrium and therefore could represent magma compositions are: Yamato 980459, NWA 5789, and NWA 2990. LAR 06319, which has been suggested to represent a near magma composition, actually contains ~ 11 wt.% excess olivine. All other ol-phyric shergottites contain significant excess olivine (20–52 wt.%). Further, assuming that the basalts analyzed by the Mars Exploration Rovers at Gusev crater and the Bounce Rock in Meridiani Planum lie on olivine control lines, we have used our newly parameterized K D ol – melt Fe – Mg to estimate primary magmas in equilibrium with the model Martian mantle. Application of geothermobarometers to new primitive magma compositions suggest that basalt generation in the Martian mantle occurs at greater depths and higher temperatures than previously thought.

– Northwest Africa (NWA) 1068 is one of the few olivine-phyric shergottites (e.g., NWA 1068, Larkman Nunatak [LAR] 06319, and Roberts Massif [RBT] 04262) that is not depleted in light rare earth elements (LREE). Its REE pattern is similar to that of the basaltic shergottite Shergotty, suggesting a possible connection between the olivine-phyric and the basaltic shergottites. To test this possible link, we have investigated the high-pressure near-liquidus phase equilibria for the NWA 1068 meteorite bulk composition. Our results show that the NWA 1068 bulk composition does not represent an unmodified mantle-derived melt; the olivine and pyroxene in our near-liquidus experiments are more magnesian than in the rock itself, which suggests that NWA 1068 contains cumulate minerals (extra olivine). We have then used these experimental results combined with the pyroxene compositions in NWA 1068 to constrain the possible high-pressure crystallization history of the parental magma. These results suggest that NWA 1068 had a complex polybaric history. Finally, we have calculated a model parental magma composition for the NWA 1068 meteorite. The calculated parental magma is an evolved basaltic composition which is too ferroan to be a primitive melt directly derived from the mantle. We suggest that it ponded and crystallized at approximately the base of the crust. This provided an opportunity for the magma to become contaminated by an “enriched” crustal component prior to crystallization. The results and modeling from these experiments are applicable not only to the NWA 1068 meteorite, but also to LAR 06319 and possibly any other enriched olivine-phyric shergottite.

Trace element mineral-magma partitioning models are important in understanding processes by which basaltic magmas are generated. Partitioning models for nickel have been extrapolated from their original applicability for the Earth’s mantle to compositions appropriate for other planets, notably the Moon and Mars. Before partitioning models can be extrapolated to explain nickel concentrations in planetary rocks, these models need to be verified thermodynamically and experimentally using planetary basaltic compositions. Experiments conducted in this study on the Martian Gusev Adirondack-class basalt, Humphrey, with 1 wt% nickel in the magma have shown that Ni affects its liquidus phase relations. By stabilizing olivine to higher temperatures, Ni increases the liquidus temperature. These experiments have shown that the Hart and Davis (1978) model based on iron-free systems cannot be extrapolated to planetary, iron-rich, basaltic systems. This work verifies the independence of the Jones (1984, 1995) and Beattie et al. (1991) models from temperature and pressure effects and suggests extrapolation to planetary compositions is justified but needs further verification. Furthermore, these experiments support the Longhi and Walker (2006) hypothesis that at high temperature nickel may be incompatible.

The Windjana drill sample, a sandstone of the Dillinger member (Kimberley formation, Gale Crater, Mars), was analyzed by CheMin X‐ray diffraction (XRD) in the MSL Curiosity rover. From Rietveld refinements of its XRD pattern, Windjana contains the following: sanidine (21% weight, ~Or95); augite (20%); magnetite (12%); pigeonite; olivine; plagioclase; amorphous and smectitic material (~25%); and percent levels of others including ilmenite, fluorapatite, and bassanite. From mass balance on the Alpha Proton X‐ray Spectrometer (APXS) chemical analysis, the amorphous material is Fe rich with nearly no other cations—like ferrihydrite. The Windjana sample shows little alteration and was likely cemented by its magnetite and ferrihydrite. From ChemCam Laser‐Induced Breakdown Spectrometer (LIBS) chemical analyses, Windjana is representative of the Dillinger and Mount Remarkable members of the Kimberley formation. LIBS data suggest that the Kimberley sediments include at least three chemical components. The most K‐rich targets have 5.6% K2O, ~1.8 times that of Windjana, implying a sediment component with >40% sanidine, e.g., a trachyte. A second component is rich in mafic minerals, with little feldspar (like a shergottite). A third component is richer in plagioclase and in Na2O, and is likely to be basaltic. The K‐rich sediment component is consistent with APXS and ChemCam observations of K‐rich rocks elsewhere in Gale Crater. The source of this sediment component was likely volcanic. The presence of sediment from many igneous sources, in concert with Curiosity's identifications of other igneous materials (e.g., mugearite), implies that the northern rim of Gale Crater exposes a diverse igneous complex, at least as diverse as that found in similar‐age terranes on Earth., Key Points First mineralogical analysis of sandstone on MarsWindjana sandstone very rich in sanidine, implying a trachyte source rockThe source of Gale Crater sediments is an incredibly diverse igneous terrane

The apparent dichotomy of Mg/Si and Al/Si ratios between terrestrial rocks and Martian meteorites has been interpreted as indicative of major differences between the terrestrial and Martian magma source regions. We suggest that this apparent dichotomy is not robust when compared with partly cumulate and non-cumulate terrestrial igneous material. Terrestrial cumulate intra-plate nodules with similar mineralogy to the SNC meteorites plot in the SNC field in this compositional space and far removed from the “terrestrial geochemical fractionation” line (Earth’s crust line) of Jagoutz et al. (1979). As is the case for terrestrial partly cumulate igneous rocks, the bulk compositions of cumulate SNC meteorites such Chassigny and Nakhla are dominated by the chemical characteristics of the accumulated minerals, minerals compositionally similar to those found in terrestrial intra-plate magmas. Therefore, the minor amounts of liquid involved play an insignificant role in the Mg/Si and Al/Si signature and no special Martian chemical characteristics can be identified. SNC meteorites considered as possibly representative of liquid compositions are similar in composition and Mg/Si and Al/Si to terrestrial ferropicrites, suggesting that even “liquid” compositions within the SNC space are not uniquely Martian. Therefore, the Mg/Si and Al/Si ratios cannot clearly distinguish Martian from terrestrial rocks.

Experimental simulation of incremental crystal fractionation of a hy-normative hawaiite indicates that the spectrum of compositions from mildly alkalic hawaiite to sodic rhyolite found in silica-saturated alkalic suites of the ocean islands and continental hotspots and rifts can be produced by fractionation at 9� 3kbar with bulk water contents4� 0� 5 wt % (in the hawaiite) at fO2 � 1� 5 log units below the fayalite–magnetite–quartz buffer (FMQ). Along this path, mildly alkalic basalt becomes increasingly alkalic because of the domination of clinopyroxene in the early fractionating assemblage and suppression of plagioclase. Kaersutite dominates at intermediate temperatures and results in stronger silica enrichment as the melt evolves to rhyolite. The fractionation assemblages are strongly pressuresensitive. At mid-crustal pressures, melts become potassic rather than sodic. At shallow conditions, the abundance of early olivine produces strong silica enrichment and subalkalic total alkalis to silica ratios. Natural mineral assemblages from silica-saturated alkalic suites show a polybaric history with fractionation at � 30km depth followed by decompression of liquids residual to this fractionation and crystallization, but not extensive fractionation, of lower-pressure assemblages. Equilibrium crystallization paths suggest that partial melting of hawaiite could produce the intermediate members of these suites provided that sufficient water was available in the source region.

The ChemCam instrument on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover, Curiosity, observed numerous igneous float rocks and conglomerate clasts, reported previously. A new statistical analysis of single-laser-shot spectra of igneous targets observed by ChemCam shows a strong peak at ~55 wt% SiO2 and 6 wt% total alkalis, with a minor secondary maximum at 47–51 wt% SiO2 and lower alkali content. The centers of these distributions, together with the rock textures, indicate that many of the ChemCam igneous targets are trachybasalts, Mg#=27 but with a secondary concentration of basaltic material,with a focus of compositions around Mg#=54. We suggest that all of these igneous rocks resulted from low-pressure, olivine-dominated fractionation of Adirondack (MER) class-type basalt compositions. This magmatism has subalkaline, tholeiitic affinities. The similarity of the basalt endmember to much of the Gale sediment compositions in the first 1000 sols of the MSL mission suggests that this type of Fe-rich, relatively low-Mg#, olivine tholeiite is the dominant constituent of the Gale catchment that is the source material for the fine-grained sediments in Gale. The similarity to many Gusev igneous compositions suggests that it is a major constituent of ancient Martian magmas, and distinct from the shergottite parental melts thought to be associated with Tharsis and the Northern Lowlands. The Gale Crater catchment sampled a mixture of this tholeiitic basalt along with alkaline igneous material, together giving some analogies to terrestrial intraplate magmatic provinces.

The importance of Cl in basalt petrogenesis has been recognized, yet constraints on its effect on liquidus crystallization of basalts are scarce. In order to quantify the role of Cl in basaltic systems, we have experimentally determined near-liquidus phase relations of a synthetic Fe–Mg-rich basalt, doped with 0.0–2.5 wt% dissolved Cl, at 0.7, 1.1, and 1.5 GPa. Results have been parameterized and compared with previous data from literature. The effect of Cl on mineral chemistry and liquidus depression is dependent on the starting basaltic composition. The liquidus depression measured for a SiO2-rich, Al2O3-poor basalt is smaller than that observed for a basaltic melt depleted in silica and enriched in FeOT and Al2O3. The effect of Cl on depression of the olivine–orthopyroxene–liquid multiple saturation pressure does not seem to vary with the starting composition of the basaltic liquid. This suggests that Cl may significantly promote the generation of silica-poor, Fe–Al-rich magmas in the Earth, Mars, and the Moon.

Knowledge of Martian igneous basaltic compositions is crucial for constraining mantle evolution, including early differentiation and mantle convection. Primitive magmas provide direct information about their mantle source regions, but most Martian meteorites either contain cumulate olivine or crystallized from fractionated melts. The recently discovered Martian meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 5789 is an olivine-phyric shergottite. NWA 5789 has special significance among the Martian meteorites because it appears to represent one of the most magnesian Martian magmas known, other than Yamato (Y) 980459 1 . Its most magnesian olivine cores (Fo85) are in Mg-Fe equilibrium with a magma of the bulk rock composition, suggesting that the bulk represents a magma composition. Based on the AlU Ti ratio of its pyroxenes, we infer that the rock began to crystallize at a high pressure consistent with conditions in Mars lower crust U upper mantle. It continued and completed its crystallization closer to the surface, where cooling was rapid and produced a mesostasis of radiating sprays of plagioclase and pyroxene. The mineralogy, petrology, mineral chemistry, and bulk rock composition of NWA 5789 are very similar to those of Y-980459. The similarities between the two meteorites suggest that NWA 5789 (like Y-980459) represents a primitive, mantle-derived magma composition. They also suggest the possibility that NWA 5789 and Y-980459 formed in the same lava flow. However, based on the mineralogy and texture of its mesostasis, NWA 5789 must have cooled more slowly than Y-980459. NWA 5789 will help elucidate the igneous geology and geochemistry of Mars.

Near-liquidus phase equilibria experiments have been conducted on a synthetic Fastball basalt composition, as analyzed at Home Plate plateau of Mars (Gusev Crater), to test if it represents a primitive mantle derived melt and place constraints on the temperature of the ancient mantle and on the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary of Mars. The Fastball basalt is multiply saturated with olivine and orthopyroxene at ∼1.2 GPa and 1430°C. Based on melting models, we predict that the Fastball composition could be produced by 13–23% equilibrium melting of the Martian mantle, with extraction of melt from the base of ∼105 km thick lithosphere. The multiple saturation for Fastball also constrains the potential temperature of the Martian mantle to be approximately 1480–1530°C with an initial melting pressure of 4.0–4.7 GPa. This potential temperature is much lower than that of the terrestrial mantle derived from similarly ancient magmas, i.e., komatiites.

Until recently, the SNC meteorites represented the only source of information about the chemistry and petrology of the Martian surface and mantle. The Mars Exploration Rovers have now analyzed rocks on the Martian surface, giving additional insight into the petrology and geochemistry of the planet. The Adirondack basalts, analyzed by the MER Spirit in Gusev crater, are olivine-phyric basaltic rocks which have been suggested to represent liquids, and might therefore provide new insights into the chemistry of the Martian mantle. Experiments have been conducted on a synthetic Humphrey composition at upper mantle and crustal conditions to investigate whether this composition might represent a primary mantle-derived melt. The Humphrey composition is multiply saturated at 12.5 kbar and 1375 °C with olivine and pigeonite; a primary anhydrous melt derived from a "chondritic" mantle would be expected to be saturated in orthopyroxene, not pigeonite. In addition, the olivine and pigeonite present at the multiple saturation are too ferroan to have been from a Martian mantle as is understood now. Therefore, it seems likely that the Humphrey composition does not represent a primary anhydrous melt from the Martian mantle, but was affected by mineral/melt fractionations at lower (crustal) pressures.
