Geodetic observations after large subduction earthquakes reflect multiple postseismic processes, including megathrust relocking. The timing of relocking and the observational constraints on it are unclear. Relocking was inferred to explain some observed landward motion that occurs within months. It was also considered unable to explain other, greater landward motion, including that off the coast of Japan beginning weeks after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, attributed to postseismic relaxation. We use generic, 3D numerical models to show that relocking, particularly of the shallow interface, is needed for postseismic relaxation to produce landward motion on the tip of the overriding plate. We argue that this finding is consistent with previous simulations that implicitly relock the megathrust where afterslip is not included. We conclude that the Tohoku megathrust relocked within less than 2 months of the earthquake. This suggests that the shallow megathrust probably behaves as a true, unstably sliding asperity.

Plate corners that transition from subduction to transform motion can result in complex deformation. The southeastern corner of the Caribbean plate is a site where active westward subduction of the oceanic South American plate transitions to transform motion along continental South America. The Northern Range (Trinidad) and Paria (Venezuela) metamorphic mountains are located directly above this eastward propagating plate transition zone. We examined the exhumation history of the Northern Range and eastern Paria using apatite fission track (AFT) and apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He (AHe and ZHe, respectively) thermochronology on 21 bedrock samples. These samples yield ages of ∼43–6 Ma (ZHe: aliquots), ∼20–4 Ma (AFT: pooled) and ∼5–2 Ma (AHe: aliquots). Along strike of the mountains, our new and published samples show a gradual eastward increase in age. Thermal modeling reveals two phases of rapid cooling and inferred exhumation that post-dates oblique collision and that migrated from west to east. We record an ∼six-fold increase in cooling and exhumation between ∼13–9 Ma in the Paria Peninsula and western Northern Range; a deceleration followed this rapid exhumation at ∼7 and 5 Ma. Synchronous with the deceleration in the west, exhumation of the eastern Northern Range increased ∼4 Ma. These post-collisional changes in exhumation constrain the inversion to east-side-up tilting of the Northern Range to ∼4 Ma. We interpret the timing and pattern of exhumation since the mid-Miocene to be consistent with the time-transgressive processes produced by an eastward propagating lithospheric subduction-transform edge propagator fault.

Plate reconstruction studies show that the Neotethys Ocean was closing due to the convergence of Africa and Eurasia toward the end of the Cretaceous. The period around 75 Ma reflects the onset of continental collision between the two plates as convergence continued to be taken up mostly by subduction of the Neotethys slab beneath Eurasia. The Owen transform plate boundary in the northeast accommodated the fast northward motion of the Indian plate relative to the African plate. The rest of the plate was surrounded by mid-ocean ridges. Africa was experiencing continent-wide rifting related to northeast-southwest extension. We aim to quantify the forces and paleostresses that may have driven this continental extension. We use the latest plate kinematic reconstructions in a grid search to estimate horizontal gravitational stresses (HGSs), plate boundary forces, and the plate's interaction with the asthenosphere. The contribution of dynamic topography to HGSs is based on recent mantle convection studies. We model intraplate stresses and compare them with the strain observations. The fit to observations favors models where dynamic topography amplitudes are smaller than 300 m. The results also indicate that the net pull transmitted from slab to the surface African plate was low. To put this into context, we notice that available tectonic reconstructions show fragmented subduction zones and various colliding micro-continents along the northern margin of the African plate around this time. We therefore interpret a low net pull as resulting from either a small average slab length or from the micro-continents' resistance to subduction.

Great (moment magnitude Mw ∼8.0 and larger) subduction megathrust earthquakes are commonly followed by increased rates of normal faulting seismicity. Extensional activity within the subducting slab is amplified when megathrust slip propagates close to the trench, and forearc extension is triggered by the largest magnitude (Mw 8.5 and larger) events. To better understand these observations, we develop an earthquake cycle model with a realistic slab geometry and stresses that are in balance with plate interface slip and bulk viscous relaxation. The modeled stresses represent perturbations to the long-term background tectonic stress field. The steady-state inter-seismic earthquake cycle stresses are compressive and their magnitudes depend on the interface locking configuration, from 25 MPa for a fully locked seismogenic zone to 5 MPa for discrete asperities on an otherwise unlocked plate interface. The co-seismic slip and corresponding co-seismic stress changes are similar in these models, independent of the locking configuration. The co-seismic stress change magnitudes are up to 5 MPa. This implies that the earthquake cycle stresses after the mainshock would still be compressive in the case of a continuous seismogenic zone, but would be widely reset to zero in the case of discrete asperities. Models with co-seismic slip confined to shallow depths produce tensional stress changes in the slab and the forearc near the trench, whereas events rupturing the base of the seismogenic zone produce tensional stress changes limited to region immediately surrounding the rupture. The locations of normal faulting aftershocks generally correlate well with the tensional co-seismic stress changes greater than 1 MPa. Following the mainshock, rapid afterslip occurring down-dip of the megathrust rupture expands the region of relative extension, but reduces its magnitude and does not promote additional normal faulting events. Bulk viscous relaxation does little to the state of stress in the elastic parts of the model. Continued plate convergence across a re-locked interface returns the system to the pre-earthquake state of compression.

Vertical edges along subducted slabs have been recognized in the majority of subduction zones. Surprisingly, slab edges evolved into Subduction-Transform-Edge-Propagator (STEP) faults in only a few regions; the conditions under which STEPs form are special. It is relevant to constrain the conditions that facilitate STEP fault initiation because they leave a clear geological footprint in the overriding plate, whereas vertical tears generally do not. We therefore study a candidate region for STEP fault initiation in the western Hellenic Subduction Zone. We investigate the structure and seismicity of the shallow western Hellenic Subduction Zone using a recent full-waveform inversion model which both captures details of crustal and upper-mantle structure, yielding constraints in the depth interval from 10 to 200 km where lithosphere-mantle interactions have tectonic expressions. The western end of the Hellenic Subduction Zone is fragmented near the Kefalonia Transform Fault. We identify a separate Epirus lithospheric fragment that is roughly vertical below the southern Albanides. We also identify a new and major contrast within the lithospheric mantle of the Ionian ocean basin, which aligns with a gradient in free-air anomalies. In the overriding plate, the Kefalonia Transform Fault zone accommodates right lateral strike-slip deformation. We interpret this fault zone as a proto-STEP fault that formed simultaneously with Pliocene fragmentation of the Epirus fragment. Comparing the recent evolution of the NW Hellenic slab edge with currently active STEPs indicates that along-trench variations in convergence velocity are a prerequisite for STEP fault initiation. Such velocity variations may result from subduction of continental crust along part of the trench. Resistance to sea ward tear propagation by a mechanically strong subducting plate may prevent variations in convergence velocity to occur, and thus STEP fault initiation. The amount of time over which a velocity contrast persists will also be relevant for STEP fault initiation. Mechanical coupling between upper- and lower-plate, and the deformability of the upper-plate appear to also play a role in the initiation of the STEP fault once a slab is fragmented., Tectonophysics, 787, ISSN:0040-1951, ISSN:1879-3266

An historically unprecedented seismic moment was released by crustal events of the 2019–2020 earthquake sequence near southwest Puerto Rico. The sequence involved at least two, and perhaps three interacting fault systems. The largest Mw 6.4 event was likely triggered by left lateral strike-slip events along the eastern extension of the North Boquerón Bay-Punta Montalva fault zone. The mainshock occurred in a normal fault zone that extends into a region where previous studies documented extensional deformation, beyond the Ponce fault and the Bajo Tasmanian fault. Coulomb stress changes by the mainshock may have triggered further normal-faulting aftershocks, left lateral strike-slip events in the region where these two fault zones interacted, and possibly right lateral strike-slip aftershocks along a third structure extending southward, the Guayanilla fault zone. Extension directions of the seismic sequence are consistently north-northwest–south-southeast-oriented, in agreement with the Global Navigation Satellite Systems-inferred motion direction of eastern Hispaniola relative to western Puerto Rico, and with crustal stress estimates for the overriding plate boundary zone.

The distribution of slip during subduction megathrust earthquakes depends on the slip deficit that accumulates on the plate interface prior to the event. We develop 3-D finite element models of subduction zones to investigate how locked zones restrict surrounding regions on the plate boundary from sliding. What is new is that we quantify the slip around asperities on the megathrust. The models show plate interface slip increasing from zero at the edge of a locked zone to the relative plate motion over a distance of ~200 km along the megathrust. This area of reduced slip accumulates a seismic moment deficit up to 10 times larger than the moment deficit in the asperity alone. Updip of locked areas, slip at the trench can be reduced by more than 50% of the plate motion. Despite large displacements of the upper plate near the trench, this region moves as a semirigid block. Rupture models of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, its tsunami characteristics, and geophysical observations near the trench can be interpreted to reflect the consequences of slip deficit accumulated on a low friction interface updip of the seismogenic zone. Neighboring asperities affect plate interface slip in a nonlinear way. Multiple asperities have overlapping pseudo-coupled regions that may restrict the magnitude of coseismic slip in single-asperity ruptures. Once an earthquake has a rupture length greater than ~250 km, it may recover the entire accumulated slip deficit. This is consistent with the magnitude of coseismic slip in several recent great megathrust earthquakes.

Stress-dependent nonlinear upper mantle rheology has a firm base in rock mechanical tests, where this nonlinearity results from dislocation creep of minerals. In the last few decades there has been some attention to nonlinear, power-law, materials for application in scaled analogue experiments for tectonic processes. However, studies describing the rheology of analogue materials with the same nonlinear dependency on stress as observed for lithospheric mantle materials at relevant stress levels, are still lacking. In this study we have developed and rheologically tested materials based on combinations of silicone polymers and plasticine, with the aim of obtaining a material that can serve as a laboratory analogue to the power-law rheology of olivine aggregates at lithospheric mantle conditions. From our steady-state creep tests we find that it is possible to obtain such a power-law material, with effective viscosities over relevant model stress ranges [5-4000 Pa] that allow for nonlinear deformation at laboratory time scales. We apply the developed material to a process where localized deformation of the lithosphere can be expected: slab break-off. We study this process using analogue models, where we apply the new nonlinear material to the lithospheric mantle domains, while we use Newtonian glucose to represent the low viscous asthenosphere. Now that we properly manage power-law behavior in our analogue lithosphere materials, we are able to model localized lithospheric tearing.

Regional observations suggest that the Central Anatolian plateau (central Turkey) has risen by > 1 km since the Tortonian (~ 8 Ma) while significant crustal shortening did not occur. This uplift was preceded by the onset of widespread volcanism (~ 14–9 Ma). The lithospheric context of these events is however unknown. For the Eastern Anatolian plateau, similar events have been attributed to the late-stage evolution of the northern Neotethys slab, resulting in delamination and slab breakoff. Recent tomographic results indicate that this slab extended beneath both below the Eastern and Central Anatolian plateau just prior to delamination. We propose a new lithospheric scenario for the regional evolution in the Aegean–Anatolian–Near East region that combines a recent compilation of surface geology data with the structure of the upper mantle. Following the Cretaceous–Eocene closure of the northern Neotethys, Africa–Eurasia convergence was accommodated by horizontal subduction at a trench that was located south of Anatolia. Like before the closure, the northern Neotethys slab continued to sink into the deeper mantle beneath the Izmir–Ankara–Erzincan suture. In the early Miocene (~ 20–15 Ma), the northern Neotethys slab started to retreat southward to the trench, resulting in delamination of the lithospheric mantle. The last part of this scenario is testable, whether delamination can explain the uplift of both the Central and Eastern Anatolian plateau. In the east, uplift due to collision of Arabia is included. We use a coupled thermal–flexural model of the lithosphere. The model results show that delamination can explain the average present-day long-wavelength topography of the Central Anatolian plateau. For the Eastern Anatolian plateau, delamination explains half the present-day elevation. We find that a single delamination event also accounts for the present-day surface heat flow and Curie-point depth in both plateaus. We therefore propose to refer to central and east Anatolia since the middle Miocene as “the Anatolian plateau”.

Martian chaotic terrains are characterized by deeply depressed intensively fractured areas that contain a large number of low-strain tilted blocks. Stronger deformation (e.g., higher number of fractures) is generally observed in the rims when compared to the middle regions of the terrains. The distribution and number of fractures and tilted blocks are correlated with the size of the chaotic terrains. Smaller chaotic terrains are characterized by few fractures between undeformed blocks. Larger terrains show an elevated number of fractures uniformly distributed with single blocks. We investigate whether this surface morphology may be a consequence of the collapse of the infill of a crater. We perform numerical simulations with the Discrete Element Method and we evaluate the distribution of fractures within the crater and the influence of the crater size, infill thickness, and collapsing depth on the final morphology. The comparison between model predictions and the morphology of the Martian chaotic terrains shows strong statistical similarities in terms of both number of fractures and correlation between fractures and crater diameters. No or very weak correlation is observed between fractures and the infill thickness or collapsing depth. The strong correspondence between model results and observations suggests that the collapse of an infill layer within a crater is a viable mechanism for the peculiar morphology of the Martian chaotic terrains.

A Subduction-Transform Edge Propagator (STEP) is the locus of continual lithospheric tearing which enables subduction of one part of a tectonic plate, while the juxtaposed part remains at the surface. A key question is the propagation direction of active STEPs, and we suspect passive margins to play a critical role in steering STEPs. We investigate the role of passive margins (width, orientation, and lateral strength contrast) on the STEP propagation direction through mechanical finite element models. For straight passive margins, we show that STEPs remain parallel to passive margins when within 15° from a trench-perpendicular geometry. In other cases, where passive margins change strike ahead of the active STEP, STEPs are captured by passive margins for abrupt strike changes (radius of curvature25°) is made through a large radius of curvature (>lithosphere thickness), STEPs will also propagate along the passive margin. A STEP system evolves toward orthogonality, which may explain why STEP faults are approximately perpendicular to trenches in nature. STEP systems are relatively insensitive to small-scale details (due to large-scale stresses), propagating as straight features along rugged passive margins. Surprisingly, magnitudes of lithospheric strength variation across the passive margin and subduction history, which determines location and magnitude of density anomalies in the mantle, are less relevant for the STEP propagation direction.

The landscape of Mars shows incised channels that often appear abruptly in the landscape, suggesting a groundwater source. However, groundwater outflow processes are unable to explain the reconstructed peak discharges of the largest outflow channels based on their morphology. Therefore, there is a disconnect between groundwater outflow processes and the resulting morphology. Using a combined approach with experiments and numerical modeling, we examine outflow processes that result from pressurized groundwater. We use a large sandbox flume, where we apply a range of groundwater pressures at the base of a layer of sediment. Our experiments show that different pressures result in distinct outflow processes and resulting morphologies. Low groundwater pressure results in seepage, forming a shallow surface lake and a channel when the lake overflows. At intermediate groundwater pressures, fissures form and groundwater flows out more rapidly. At even higher pressures, the groundwater initially collects in a subsurface reservoir that grows due to flexural deformation of the surface. When this reservoir collapses, a large volume of water is released to the surface. We numerically model the ability of these processes to produce floods on Mars and compare the results to discharge estimates based on previous morphological studies. We show that groundwater seepage and fissure outflow are insufficient to explain the formation of large outflow channels from a single event. Instead, formation of a flexure-induced subsurface reservoir and subsequent collapse generates large floods that can explain the observed morphologies of the largest outflow channels on Mars and their source areas.

At convergent plate boundaries, the properties of the actual plate contact are important for the overall dynamics. Convergent plate boundaries both mechanically decouple and link tectonic plates and accommodate large amounts of strain. We investigate two fundamental physical states of the subduction contact: one based on a fault and the other based on a subduction channel. Using a finite element method, we determine the specific signatures of both states of the subduction contact. Based on a consistent comparison of fault and channel numerical models, we find that the nature of the plate contact is one of the controlling factors in developing or not of back-arc extension. To obtain back-arc extension, roll-back is required as an underling geodynamical process, but it is not always a sufficient condition. In part of this thesis, we investigate how the plate contact affects the initial stage of continental collision. For the same rheological properties and driving forces, varying the nature of the plate contact leads to three types of responses. The presence of a subduction channel promotes coherent and, when the boundary conditions allow it, plate-like subduction of the continental margin. In models with a subduction fault, coherent subduction of the incoming continental lithosphere occurs when the colliding passive margin has a gentle slope. The approaching continental sliver starts to subduct and the subduction is characterized by a non-plate-like behavior, slower subduction velocity than in channel models and strong slab deformation. If the continental margin is steep and the strength of the incoming continental crust is high, fault models result in locking of the trench, eventually leading to slab break-off. If the crustal strength is relatively low, shear delamination of part of the crust is expected. In the channel model this type of delamination never occurs. We conclude that initial stages of continental collision are strongly affected by whether the subduction contact is a fault or a channel. Neither the slab pull magnitude nor the tectonic setting is very important to the overall geodynamics at this stage. The plate contact type, the slope of the incoming passive margin and the rheology of the continent, controls whether the incoming crust subducts entirely, separates partially or entirely from the lithospheric mantle, or blocks the trench, likely leading to slab break-off. We identify four classes of subduction zones. The first two classes follow directly from our numerical experiments in combination with a re-analysis of published observations. In class 1 subduction zones are characterized by a plate contact that is largely fault like with an accretionary margin. In class 2 the plate contacts are largely channel-type and have an erosive margin. The third class, where the plate contact is a channel entirely, consists of accretionary margins with a high sediment supply. Subduction zones of class 4, mostly characterized by an erosive convergent margin (northern Chili, Peru, Honshu and Kuril), are more complicated; however, they can be explained by incorporating regional observations.

Convergence of lithospheric plates is accommodated at active margins by one plate moving beneath the other into the Earth's mantle. Changes in this subduction process may cause variations in the topography of the Earth's surface near a convergent plate margin. The focus of this thesis lies on surface displacements which occur during ongoing subduction and in the final stages of a subduction process. During continuing subduction, surface displacements may, for example, be due to changes in buoyancy or plate velocity. In the last phase of a subduction process, surface uplift may result from detachment of subducted lithosphere from the lithosphere at the surface. This study was motivated by indications of slab detachment in regional tomographic images of the Mediterranean region. In general, study of the dynamics of subduction may add to understanding the origin of processes at the Earth's surface, for example, the formation of mountains and basins. Vice versa, analysis of surface data may contribute to insight in the physics of subduction.
