Quasi-electrostatic (QE) fields which exist above thunderclouds after lightning discharges can lead to the formation of columnar channels of breakdown ionization and carrot-like vertical luminous structures with typical transverse dimension approximately 5-10 km spaning an altitude range from approximately 80 km to well below approximately 50 km. The carrot-like forms closely resemble those observed in sprites. Results indicate that the appearance of optical emissions can be significantly delayed in time (approx. 1-20 ms) with respect to the causative lightning discharge.

Past work demostrates that strong lower hybrid (LH) waves can be excited by electromagnetic whistler mode waves throughout large regions of the topside ionosphere and magnetosphere. The effects of the excited LH waves upon the suprathermal ion population in the topside ionosphere and magnetosphere depend upon the distribution of LH wave amplitude with wavelength lambda. The present work reports plasma wave data from the DE-1 and COSMOS 1809 spacecraft which suggests that the excited LH wave spectrum has components for which lambda less than or equal to 3.5 m when excitation occurs at a frequency roughly equal to the local lower hybrid resonance frequency. This wavelength limit is a factor of approximately 3 below that reported in past work and suggests that the excited LH waves can interact with suprathermal H(+) ions with energy less than or equal to 6 eV. This finding supports recent work concerning the heating of suprathermal ions above thunderstorm cells.

We report on coordinated high-altitude satellite observations in support of one of the first space-based very low frequency (VLF) wave injection experiments, namely the USSR Aktivny mission. The Aktivny satellite (A) was designed to carry a VLF transmitter (nominal frequency approximately 10 kHz, transmitter power approximately 10 kW) coupled to a 20-m-diameter loop antenna in a nearly polar orbit (83 deg inclination, apogee approximately 2500 km, perigee approximately 500 km). We focus our attention on conjunction experiments between the Aktivny and DE 1 satellites. Because of problems in the deployment of the loop antenna, the radiated power capability of the antenna was significantly reduced. Although this substantially reduced the expectation of receiving detectable signal levels on the satellite, the DE 1/Aktivny conjunction experiments were nevertheless carried out as a means of possibly placing an upper limit on the radiated power. During the period November 1989 through April 1990, a total of 10 DE 1/Aktivny wave injection sessions were conducted. During each session the Aktivny transmitter operated at 10.537 kHz with 1 s On - 1 s Off format, for a period of 6 min centered around the conjunction time. During three conjunction periods (December 12, 26, and 27, 1989) both DE 1 and Aktivny were in the southern hemisphere, and DE 1 was at relatively low altitudes (ranging from 6211 to 14,810 km), thus providing the best conjunction possibilities according to the ray tracing criteria developed above. On most days, Omega transmitter signals as well as commonly occuring natural wave phenomena such as whistlers (0(+)) and hiss were clearly seen well above the background level, but there was no evidence of the Aktivny 1 s On/ 1 s Off pattern. Though no Aktivny signals were detected by the LWR on the DE 1 satellite, the experimental constraints allow us to place an upper limit on the total power radiated by the Aktivny transmitter in the whistler-mode. Using experimental parameters, and the minimum detectable signal level of 0.05 muV/m for LWR, we find the upper limit on the total power radiated by the Aktivny satellite in the whistler-mode to be approximately 10 mW. Several recommendations for future space-based wave injection experiments are presented.

We estimate ion heating in the topside ionosphere directly over thunderstorm cells. The primary heating is due to lower hybrid waves excited through linear mode coupling as intense electromagnetic (EM) whistler mode radiation from lightning is scattered from small scale (2 - 20 m) magnetic-field-aligned plasma density irregularities in the topside ionosphere. For typical radiated EM fields, we find that suprathermal H+ ions in the 6 eV and greater energy range can be heated by 20 to 40 eV as a result of a single lightning discharge. We also show how the number density of 6 eV and greater H(+) ions is enhanced by preheating resulting from the absorption of proton whistlers in the 500-1000 km altitude range. For lightning discharge rates of one or more per second over a 10 exp 4 sq km area, our model predicts a total energy gain for the H(+) ions of 400 eV to 2 KeV and a perpendicular ion flux of about 10 exp 5 to 10 exp 6/sq cm sec. These fluxes should be observable on low altitude spacecraft using presently available instrumentation.

A Boltzmann formulation of the electron distribution function and Maxwell's equations for the EM fields are used to simulate the interaction of lightning radiated EM pulses with the lower ionosphere. Ionization and dissociative attachment induced by the heated electrons cause significant changes in the local electron density, N(e). Due to 'slow' field changes of typical lightning EM pulses over time scales of tens of microsec, the distribution function follows the quasi-equilibrium solution of the Boltzmann equation in the altitude range of interest (70 to 100 km). The EM pulse is simulated as a planar 100 microsec long single period oscillation of a 10 kHz wave injected at 70 km. Under nighttime conditions, individual pulses of intensity 10-20 V/m (normalized to 100 km horizontal distance) produce changes in N(e) of 1-30 percent while a sequence of pulses leads to strong modification of N(e) at altitudes less than 95 km. The N(e) changes produce a 'sharpening' of the lower ionospheric boundary by causing a reduction in electron density at 75-85 km (due to attachment) and a substantial increase at 85-95 km (due to ionization) (e.g., the scale height decreases by a factor of about 2 at about 85 km for a single 20 V/m EM pulse). No substantial N(e) changes occur during daytime.

Wave propagation directions are determined on the basis of wave data from the DE 1 satellite showing simultaneously nonducted whistlers and hiss. Hiss wave normal angles are determined as about 70 and 77 deg for f = 3.5 and 2.5 kHz, respectively, with the wave vector being almost perpendicular to the meridional plane. A novel approximate analytical formulation of 3D propagation of whistler waves is developed and used to model the drift of magnetospherically reflected whistlers in azimuth. It is shown that depending on initial parameters, the time of arrival of whistler rays at a fixed observation point can differ by 10-20 s, with signals from different magnetospherically reflected whistlers overlapping to evolve into a hisslike signal. The total azimuthal drift of whistler rays is found to not exceed about 30 deg, so that plasmaspheric hiss may be produced by nonducted whistlers at longitudes correlated with the location of thunderstorm activity.

Nonlinear wave-wave interaction between signals from a ground-based VLF transmitter and narrow-band ELF emissions in the subauroral ionosphere is studied by means of the bispectrum and bicoherence analysis. A bicoherence analysis has indicated that the sideband structures around the Siple transmitter signal received onboard the ISIS satellite are due to the nonlinear interaction between the Siple VLF signal and the pre-existing ELF emission.

Ray-tracing simulations and estimates of whistler wave damping show that magnetospherically reflected whistlers can persist for about 100 s in a LF band (about 1 kHz). The combined contribution from whistler rays produced by a single lightning flash but entering the magnetosphere at different points form a continuous hisslike signal, as observed at a fixed point. Estimates indicate that the total whistler wave energy input into the magnetosphere from lightning discharges may maintain experimentally observed levels of magnetospheric hiss.

Two related aspects of the linear mode conversion mechanism are considered: (1) the controlled heating of suprathermal ions in the ionosphere and magnetosphere over a powerful VLF/ELF transmitter using lower hybrid (LH) waves excited by the electromagnetic (EM) transmitter signals through linear mode conversion; (2) the excitation of intense LH waves in the auroral regions through the linear conversion of VLF/ELF EM auroral hiss, and the subsequent heating of ions by the excited LH waves. Experimental results are used to demonstrate that strong LH waves can be excited by EM waves down to frequencies as low as 2 kHz in the subauroral low-altitude magnetosphere. It is also shown that an approximately 250 kW VLF/ELF transmitter operating in the subauroral region at 2 kHz could excite sufficiently intense LH waves to heat suprathermal 1 eV H(+) ions and 16 eV O(+) ions to roughly 50 eV in a region extending in altitude from 1000 to 5000 km above the transmitter with a horizontal scale of about 500 km. If coherent wave stochastic heating occurs, the O(+) energy gain could be as large as 200 eV.

First order cyclotron or Landau resonant pitch angle scattering of electrons by oblique whistler waves propagating at large angles to the ambient field are found to be at least as large as that due to parallel propagating waves. Commonly observed precipitation of more than 40 keV electrons in association with ducted whistlers may thus be accompanied by substantial fluxes of lower energy (10 eV-40 keV) electrons precipitated by the nonducted components.

Magnetospherically reflected whistlers resonantly interact with energetic (of order 100 keV) electrons in a relatively narrow energy range during multiple equatorial crossings over a wide range of L-shells (L between 1.5 and 4). Results indicate that wave energy that enters the magnetosphere at a fixed location can potentially contribute to the loss of particles over a wide range of latitudes.

This paper presents a theoretical model for electrostatic lower hybrid waves excited by electromagnetic whistler mode waves propagating in regions of the magnetosphere and the topside ionosphere, where small-scale magnetic-field-aligned plasma density irregularities are thought to exist. In this model, the electrostatic waves are excited by linear mode coupling as the incident electromagnetic whistler mode waves scatter from the magnetic-field-aligned plasma density irregularities. Results indicate that high-amplitude short-wavelength (5 to 100 m) quasi-electrostatic whistler mode waves can be excited when electromagnetic whistler mode waves scatter from small-scale planar magnetic-field-aligned plasma density irregularities in the topside ionosphere and magnetosphere.

The excitation of electrostatic waves by whistler-mode VLF signals propagating along magnetic-field lines in and near the earth's inner radiation belt is examined on the basis of ISEE-1 observations obtained during July-December 1983. The data are presented in extensive graphs and characterized in detail. The effect is seen in about 60 percent of the ISEE-1 orbits penetrating the belt and for signals originating in both hemispheres, with an electrostatic-wave effective bandwidth roughly proportional to the local magnetic-field strength. These results are interpreted in terms of a theoretical model in which scattering of the VLF waves off magnetic-field-aligned plasma density irregularities is followed by particle pitch-angle scattering and precipitation in the radiation belt; the latter effect could then produce new irregularities via a feedback mechanism.

A preliminary global study of VLF transmitter signals and low-latitude whistlers received at 245 km altitude on the Space Shuttle is presented. The observations were made in a 5-day period during the STS 3 mission in March 1982. Direct signals from a 10-kW transmitter located at 28 deg S magnetic latitude were received in a roughly circular region with a diameter of 6000 km centered around the transmitter. Signals propagating through the magnetosphere from a 500-kW magnetically conjugate transmitter at 40 deg N magnetic latitude were received inside a region extending 5000 km in longitude and 2000 km in latitude. In addition, direct signals from a 1-MW transmitter at 31 deg S magnetic latitude were received in a region extending 22,000 km in longitude, while the latitudinal extent (5000 km) was limited by the Shuttle orbit and the day/night terminator.

Landau resonance and cyclotron resonance of coherent whistler mode waves and energetic electrons are explored for magnetoplasmas with appreciable gradients in the plasma density and magnetic field strength. It is shown that in the topside ionosphere of the earth near the ion transition height the gradients in plasma density and magnetic field strength along a magnetic field line may match in a way which enhances both Landau and cyclotron interactions between waves and electrons at the loss cone pitch angle. The pitch angle scattering induced by a signal from a ground-based VLF transmitter in the ionosphere above the transmitter has been estimated and compared to the pitch angle scattering induced by naturally occurring ELF hiss through cyclotron resonance. It is found that the expected scattering due to plasmapheric hiss is an order of magnitude larger than that due to Landau resonance in the topside ionosphere. Pitch angle scattering due to cyclotron resonance in the topside ionosphere, however, may be larger by a factor of 2. It is suggested that the 'fast Trimpi' effect may be caused by a cyclotron resonance interaction in the topside ionosphere.

A recently developed theory is used to calculate the wave magnetic field amplitude threshold, B-tau, necessary to allow the nonlinear trapping of energetic gyroresonant and Landau resonant electrons by VLF whistler mode waves in the magnetosphere propagating at an arbitrary angle, psi, with respect to the earth's magnetic field. A detailed raytracing study is carried out to establish the variation of psi with position along each magnetic shell in the range L = 2-5 and for frequencies 5-17.8 kHz. It is found that the minimum values of B-tau along each L shell generally occur at points of second-order resonance. In general, for nonducted fixed frequency signals there is only one point of second-order resonance on each L shell, and this is located within a few degrees of the magnetic equator. However, over a narrow range of L, there are as many as three points of second-order resonance and as many as three associated minima in B-tau. At least one of these points is located more than 10 deg from the magnetic equator.

The present paper has the objective to report the existence of a new phenomenon in which coherent VLF signals from the Siple Station VLF transmitter (Antarctica, 76 deg S, 84 deg W) are observed to trigger a new type of VLF emission, taking into account the propagation of these signals upward through the ionosphere and low-altitude magnetosphere to the ISIS 2 satellite at 1400 km altitude. The existence of the impulsive emission (IE) effect lends credence to the idea that coherent VLF signals can act as catalysts to trigger natural plasma instabilities in the subauroral ionosphere and lower magnetosphere. Controlled studies of these instabilities may, therefore, be possible.

New high-altitude ISEE 1 satellite observations of high-amplitude nonducted signals from the Omega navigation transmitter in North Dakota are reported. The amplitude of the signal was approximately 16-26 dB higher than that of similar signals observed at comparable locations on other days. Over the range L = 3.3-3.7, the transmitter pulses at 13.1 and 13.6 kHz were associated with sideband signals spaced in frequency roughly symmetrically about the carrier and generally reduced in amplitude by about 5 dB with respect to the carrier. The strongest sidebands were generally offset in frequency from the carrier by about + or - 55 Hz. Reasons are discussed for believing that the unusually high amplitude of the signals was due to wave amplification through the whistler-mode instability.

An elongation of 20-200 ms, attributed to closely spaced multiple propagation paths between the satellite and the ground, is noted in well defined pulses observed by the ISEE 1 satellite in nonducted whistler mode signals from the Siple Station VLF transmitter. Electric field measurements show a 2 to 10 dB amplitude variation in the observed amplitude fading pattern which is also consistent with direct multiple path propagation. The results obtained for two cases, one outside and one inside the plasmapause, establish that the direct signals transmitted from the ground arrive almost simultaneously at any point in the magnetosphere along two or more closely spaced direct ray paths. It is also shown that multiple paths can be explained by assuming field-aligned irregularities, and the implications of these results for nonducted wave-particle interaction in the magnetosphere are discussed. For reasonable parameters of nonducted, multiple path propagation, a cyclotron-resonant electron will experience a wave Doppler broadening of a few tens to a few hundreds of Hz.

A theory is presented of the nonlinear gyroresonance interaction that takes place in the magnetosphere between energetic electrons and coherent VLF waves propagating in the whistler mode at an arbitrary angle psi with respect to the earth's magnetic field B-sub-0. Particularly examined is the phase trapping (PT) mechanism believed to be responsible for the generation of VLF emissions. It is concluded that near the magnetic equatorial plane gradients of psi may play a very important part in the PT process for nonducted waves. Predictions of a higher threshold value for PT for nonducted waves generally agree with experimental data concerning VLF emission triggering by nonducted waves.

ISIS 1 and 2 and ISEE 1 VLF/ELF electric field wave data indicate the existence of a novel phenomenon, in which initially narrow band upgoing signals from ground-based VLF transmitters undergo a significant spectral broadening as they propagate through the ionosphere and protonosphere, up to altitudes in the 600-3800 km range. For transmitter signals in the 10-20 kHz range, the spectral broadening can be as high as 10 percent of the input signal's nominal frequency. In many cases, the bandwidth of the spectrally broadened signals is a strong function of the electric dipole antenna orientation with respect to the local direction of the earth's magnetic field. The unusual dispersion in the components of the spectrally broadened pulses suggests that the spectral broadening may be due to a Doppler shift effect in which the initial signals scatter from irregularities in the F region and couple into quasi-electrostatic modes of short wave length.

New observations in the magnetosphere of coherent VLF waves from the Siple Station, Antarctica, transmitter and associated VLF emissions triggered by the transmitter signals are reported. The data analyzed were acquired on the EXOS-B high-altitude satellite during the period July 15-September 7, 1979, during joint VLF wave-injection experiments involving scientists from Kyoto, Tokyo, and Stanford universities. The experiments were carried out to gain a deeper understanding of the interactions between coherent VLF waves and energetic particles in the magnetosphere, in particular, the whistler-mode instability through which both natural and stimulated VLF emissions are produced. Analysis of the emission-triggering events provides strong evidence that the triggering took place inside whistler-mode ducts and that the emissions reached the satellite only after being scattered at one end of the ducts by ionospheric irregularities. It is concluded that in the noon sector of the magnetosphere, the amplitude of nonducted signals from the Siple transmitter is generally less than the threshold level necessary for triggering in the nonducted mode.

The EXOS-B/Siple Station joint experiment on the triggering of VLF emissions by man-made signals causing some form of wave-particle interactions in the magnetosphere is presented, and results concerning wave-particle correlations are reported. In situ measurements of both energetic electron flux and VLF waves were made near the meridian connecting Siple Station, Antarctica with Roberval, Quebec, Canada in campaigns during July through September, 1979 and December 1979 through January 1980 at times of VLF transmission from Siple. Strong observed signals were found to be well correlated with a pancake pitch angle distribution of 0.3 to 6.9-keV electrons, and to exhibit a positive linear growth rate. Artificially stimulated emissions were observed to be accompanied by large electron fluxes in all energy channels in the equatorial interaction region, although the measured pitch angle distribution was not highly anisotropic. Results may be interpreted by the amplification of Siple signals by the cyclotron instability due to high pitch angle anisotropy (pancake distribution) and the triggering of emissions in the presence of high electron fluxes with some anisotropy and a sufficiently strong signal.

The present investigation has the objective to study the precipitation of energetic electrons into the ionosphere due to the interaction of these particles with short-duration VLF waves in the magnetosphere. The physics of the interaction is considered, taking into account the wave structure, the energetic particle distribution, wave-particle interaction, and the computation of the precipitated flux versus time. The obtained formulation is applied to various different magnetospheric conditions. Attention is also given to peak flux and total deposited energy. The results of the investigation demonstrate the role of the energetic particle distribution function, the normalized wave frequency, the L value of the path of propagation, the cold plasma density, and the wave intensity. The precipitated energy flux that would be observed at 1000-km altitude is presented as a function of time relative to the injection of the wave pulse at the same point.

VLF line radiation in the magnetosphere is analyzed in an attempt to clarify the role of radiation from electric power lines in magnetospheric wave-particle interactions. Observations were made by the ISEE 1 satellite from October 1977 through August 1979 between L = 2 and L = 8 and 50 to 110 deg W longitude, a region encompassing the magnetic field lines linking the Eights, Siple and Roberval stations and in which VLF chorus activity had been linked to power line radiation. Line radiation was detected on 5 of 90 orbits, in all cases at frequencies below 4 kHz. The one event with a high S/N ratio exhibited lines changing frequency at rates from 22 to 6 Hz/min over a 9-min period. The radiation was detected at a time when whistler mode echoing was quite pronounced on lower L shells, and thus may have been a scattered component of line radiation echoing between hemispheres. It is concluded that very little of the background VLF wave energy in the outer magnetosphere is contained in line radiation, although the catalytic role of line radiation in controlling wave-particle interactions remains to be assessed.

Adiabatic theory is used in studying the transient nonlinear pitch angle scattering experienced by energetic electrons under the influence of coherent VLF wave packets in the magnetosphere. Finite wave packets of both fixed and variable frequency are considered, as are wide ranges of L shell, wave amplitude, and wave frequency. The results indicate that large mean pitch angle changes can be induced in the portion of the energetic population that undergoes a nonlinear cyclotron resonance interaction with the wave packet.

Magnetospheric equatorial electron densities determined from whistler observations are compared with in situ satellite measurements of electron density along near-equatorial orbits. Whistler data was recorded at Siple and Palmer, Antarctica, while the sweep frequency receiver on ISEE-1 was used to measure plasma densities during passes within about 15 deg of the whistler station longitudes at L values between 3 and 5.2. The whistler and satellite data sets are found to be in good agreement for the three rendezvous considered, suggesting that the diffusive equilibrium model applied to calculate electron densities from whistler measurements was appropriate for the description of electron density distributions along field lines in the outer plasmasphere. Data also indicate that density enhancements within the whistler ducts were not more than about 30% of the mean or interduct level, and that there were no significant east-west density gradients within about 15 deg of whistler station longitudes over the L range of the study.

A description is given of new observations of nonducted coherent VLF waves from ground-based transmitters and associated VLF emissions in the magnetosphere. The data reported were acquired by the Stanford University VLF Wave Injection Experiment on the ISEE-1 satellite. The experiment has four main components, including a broadband (1-32 kHz) VLF receiver on ISEE-1 connected to a long electric antenna, a broadband (1-20 kHz) controllable VLF transmitter located at Siple Station in the Antarctic, various VLF navigation and communications transmitters, and ground stations in the Antarctic and Canada. The main goal of the experiment is to acquire understanding of interactions between coherent VLF waves and energetic particles in the magnetosphere, in particular the whistler mode instability through which both natural and stimulated VLF emissions are produced.

Preliminary results of experiments made using the EXOS-B satellite to make simultaneous observations of VLF signals transmitted from Siple Station, Antarctica and interacting particles are reported. VLF measurements carried out by the EXOS-B wideband receiver upon satellite crossings of the Siple meridian at equatorial and high latitudes were able to detect the Siple signal on about 50% of the passes, and observed four instances of artificially stimulated emissions. Two of these cases exhibit triggering with a clear relation to the transmitted frequency format, while in the remaining two this relation is absent. Electron fluxes at energies from 3 eV to 9.5 keV are observed to be enhanced during the Siple stimulated emission events, with a distribution on the equatorial passes sufficient to satisfy the cyclotron interaction condition for parallel propagation of Siple signals of frequency about half the local cyclotron frequency.

Preliminary results of observations by the Japanese magnetospheric satellite Jikiken (EXOS-B) of Siple transmissions and VLF emissions triggered by the Siple signals are reviewed. The experiments discussed were carried out in July, August, and September of 1979 and in December 1979 and January 1980. Only four events concentrated within the period from August 14 to 18 were found in which triggered emissions were associated with Siple transmissions. The electron distributions observed on the equatorial crossing passes, when Siple triggered emissions were detected, suggest that the cyclotron resonance condition is satisfied for Siple signals and electrons of energy around 1 keV or less, provided the interaction region is inside the plasmapause. It is noted that if these emissions were generated outside the plasmapause, electron energies much higher than 10 keV would be necessary for the cyclotron interaction, which were above the range of the measurements. For the high latitude passes of August 14 and 17, the electron fluxes were found to be very small.

It is noted that recent data from the ISEE-1 spacecraft indicate that VLF emissions triggered by conducted coherent VLF waves often possess spectral characteristics markedly different from those of emissions triggered by ducted waves. Emission triggering by nonducted waves is found to involve a strong path selectiveness. It is also established that emission triggering by nonducted waves can take place over a wide L-range and may involve inner radiation belt particles of energy up to 200 keV. It is concluded that the VLF emission generation process can occur under much more general conditions than previously believed on the basis of the results of ground-to-ground wave-injection experiments.

Sideband mutual interactions between VLF waves in the magnetosphere are investigated. Results of an experimental program involving the generation of sidebands by means of frequency shift keying are presented which indicate that the energetic electrons in the magnetosphere can interact only with sidebands generated by signals with short modulation periods. Using the value of the memory time during which electrons interact with the waves implied by the above result, it is estimated that the length of the electron interaction region in the magnetosphere is between 4000 and 2000 km. Sideband interactions are found to be similar to those between constant-frequency signals, exhibiting suppression and energy coupling. Results from a second sideband transmitting program show that for most cases the coherence bandwidth of sidebands is about 50 Hz. Sideband mutual interactions are then explained by the overlap of the ranges of the parallel velocity of the electrons which the sidebands organize, and the wave intensity in the interaction region is estimated to be 2.5-10 milli-gamma, in agreement with satellite measurements.

A study is made of nonlinear cyclotron resonance wave-particle interaction in the magnetosphere with attention to the pitch angle scattering of energetic electrons by coherent VLF whistler mode signals. A computer simulation of the full nonlinear equations of motions for energetic particles interacting with a longitudinal whistler mode wave in an inhomogeneous magnetosphere are used. The results are compared to those of a linear theory. Test electrons distributed in energy and pitch angle are used to simulate the full distribution of particles. The scattering of the test particles and their integration over energy and pitch angle yield the precipitated flux. The results suggest that coherent VLF waves significantly influence the dynamics and lifetimes of energetic electrons trapped in the magnetosphere and magnetic shells illuminated by the waves.

The properties of the plasmapause as a VLF wave guide are studied. The guidance that occurs is a form of gradient trapping of VLF wave energy. It is shown that guiding is possible at both the inner and outer edges of the plasmapause and that more efficient guiding occurs as the plasmapause gradients become stronger. In the case of strong gradients, waves coming from a latitude range of about 8 deg are focused tightly about the plasmapause field lines, resulting in a wave intensity increase of approximately 3 dB near the magnetic equatorial plane. It is shown that plasmapause-guided waves can be observed on the ground and can echo between hemispheres, precisely as can waves guided in normal whistler ducts. The single distinguishing feature of plasmapause-guided waves is a lowered upper cutoff frequency. The results indicate that the vicinity of the plasmapause represents a natural and readily accessible region of VLF wave guidance and focusing where both passive and active VLF experiments can be studied through ground and in situ satellite measurements.

Results are reported for an experiment in which VLF waves from a transmitter in Antarctica were injected into the magnetosphere along geomagnetic field lines and detected near the magnetic equatorial plane by high-altitude spacecraft. The purpose of this experiment was to conduct a controlled in situ study of VLF wave-particle interactions and to determine the propagation characteristics of the injected waves in the magnetosphere, the regions where VLF emissions are produced, and the effective volume of the magnetosphere illuminated by the transmitter. The results indicate that: (1) the bulk of the satellite receptions occurred during periods of quieting following magnetic disturbances, (2) receptions generally occurred inside the plasmapause, (3) the spacecraft detected predominantly unducted waves, (4) the injected signals could illuminate a large volume of the magnetosphere, and (5) VLF emissions were triggered by nonducted transmitter pulses.

A diagnostic technique to obtain the cold-plasma density profile in the magnetosphere is introduced. This method uses satellite measurements of group delay and pulse duration of VLF signals from ground transmitters in conjunction with a detailed ray-tracing analysis. An iterative method is involved which starts with an approximate density profile, computes the ray paths for that profile, and then compares the properties of the rays that reach the satellite location with the actual satellite measurements. The density profile is then modified to account for any discrepancies between the two results. The same process is repeated with the new profile until one has reasonable agreement between the data and ray-tracing results. This method is applied to the case of an Imp 6 pass, where strong signals from the Siple VLF transmitter were observed for over 25 min. Good agreement is found between the results of the proposed technique and the well-known ground whistler techniques of cold-plasma diagnostics. The results also serve to illustrate the wide diversity of propagation paths from ground transmitters to high-altitude satellites during VLF wave-injection experiments.

A description is presented of the results of a computer simulation involving a study of the particle precipitation induced by coherent VLF waves in the magnetosphere. The results of a computation for a 10 picoweber/sq m wave amplitude are shown in a graph. The precipitated flux for three different energies is given in a table. For 1.5 keV the energy deposition rate is about 0.8 erg/sq cm-sec, almost as intense as a moderate aurora. It is concluded that significant energy is deposited by a wave of 10 picoweber/sq m intensity. Such a wave amplitude is representative of highly coherent VLF wave types that are found in the magnetosphere. On the basis of the considered results it appears that controlled VLF wave injection in the magnetosphere could be an important and useful tool to study the coupling processes between the atmosphere and magnetosphere.

The paper examines the feasibility of a technique to simulate ULF waves in the ionosphere using controlled particle precipitation. In the proposed model of micropulsation generation, a pulse from a VLF ground transmitter (or satellite transmitter) is injected into the magnetosphere and follows the earth's static magnetic field lines to a region near the magnetic equatorial plane where it begins to interact strongly with energetic electrons through gyroresonance. VLF emissions are produced in the gyroresonance interaction, and numerous energetic electrons are scattered into the loss cone, proceeding down the magnetic field lines and precipitating into the lower ionosphere where they create large-scale enhancements of ionization. The results lend support to the idea of attempting to produce detectable ULF waves by using ground- or satellite-based VLF transmitters.
