High-resolution seismic records obtained in the Rio Grande do Sul coastal zone, southern Brazil, revealed that prominent valleys and channels developed in the area before the installation of actual coastal plain. Landwards, the paleoincisions can be linked with the present courses of the main river dissecting the area. Oceanwards, they can be linked with related features previously recognized in the continental shelf and slope by means of seismic and morphostructural studies. Based mainly on seismic, core data and geologic reasoning, it can be inferred that the coastal valleys were incised during forced regression events into the coastal prism deposited during previous sea level highstand events of the Quaternary. Seismic data has revealed paleovalleys up to 10 km wide and, in some places, infilled with up to 40 m thick of sediments. The results indicated two distinct periods of cut-and-fill events in the Patos Lagoon area. The filling of the younger incision system is mainly Holocene and its onset is related to the last main regressive event of the Pleistocene, when the sea level fell about 130 m below the actual position. The older incision and filling event is related to the previous regressive–transgressive events of the Middle and Late Pleistocene. The fluvial discharge fed delta systems on the shelf edge during the sea level lowstands. The subsequent transgressions drowned the incised drainage, infilling it and closing the inlets formerly connecting the coastal river to the ocean. The incised features may have played a significant role on the basin-margin architecture, facies distribution and accommodation space during the multitude of up and down sea level events of the Quaternary.

O presente trabalho aborda a ocorrência de turfa na plataforma continental do Rio Grande do Sul-Brasil a uma profundidade de 60 m abaixo do nível de mar atual. A amostra analisada faz parte do testemunho T-27 obtido na Operação Oceanográfica GEOMAR VII. Foram efetuadas análises granulométricas dos sedimentos do testemunho, análises palinológicas, datação de Carbono 14 e razão C13/C12 (d13C) na amostra de turfa. Os resultados obtidos classificam o material analisado como pertencente a uma antiga planície de inundação, provavelmente pertencente à antiga drenagem do rio Jaguarão ou Camaquã. A idade da amostra de turfa de 12.540-12.150 cal anos AP e a ocorrência deste depósito a 60 m de profundidade, permite interpretar uma longa estabilização do nível do mar durante a última transgressão do Holoceno, ou seja, uma condição ambiental costeira necessária para a gênese deste depósito

The trace element content of zircon grains from Holocene beach sands from the Rio Grande do Sul state in southern Brazil was investigated in order to discuss their probable primary source. Zircon grains from 10 samples were separated and analysed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA ICP-MS) for rare earth elements (REE), niobium (Nb), uranium (U), thorium (Th), yttrium (Y), hafnium (Hf), and tantalum (Ta) and by microprobe and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for silicon (Si), zirconium (Zr), and phosphorus (P). The results obtained are similar to those suggested by the zircon classification developed by Belousova et al. (2002, Igneous zircon: trace element composition as an indicator on source rock type. The geological evolution of the continental shelf a nd in the coastal zone of southern Brazil during th e Quaternary period is addressed in this study. High- resolution seismic records obtained at the Patos Lagoon revealed the presence of channels that deepl y dissected the coastal zone before the formation of the modern, low-relief, coastal plain. Two perio ds of channel incision are inferred, based mainly on seismic records. The paleodrainage paths mapped from the seismic records can be connected with those recognized by previous studies on the adjacen t continental shelf and slope. Upstream, the drainage incised mainly into the coastal prism depo sited during previous sea-level highstand events. The paleodrainage network, recognized on the coasta l plain and continental shelf, represents a river- shelf system, linking the drainage basin to the dep ositional settings on the marginal basin, bypassing the continental shelf exposed during a forced regre ssion event. A análise de registros sísmicos de alta resolução (3,5 e 7,0 kHz), obtidos na Lagoa dos Patos, revelou a presença de diversos canais soterrados que dissecaram profundamente a zona costeira do Rio Grande do Sul (Sul do Brasil) antes do estabelecimento da superfície baixa e levemente ondulada daplanície costeira atual. Em direção ao continente, o sistema de paleodrenagem mapeado de registros sísmicos pode ser vinculado ao curso atual do Rio Camaquã. À jusante, ele pode ser conectado com sistemas de paleocanais da plataforma continental adjacente e talude continental, reconhecidos em trabalhos anteriores através de estudos sísmicos e morfoestruturais. À montante, a drenagem foi escavada no prisma costeiro depositado durante eventos prévios de nível de mar alto do Quaternário. Estudos sísmicos revelam paleocanais que dissecaram a região costeira do Rio Grande do Sul. Dois sistemas de paleocanais foram estabelecidos para a área da Lagoa dos Patos. O preenchimento do sistema de canais mais jovem e´Holoceno. Ele e´relacionado à última regressão marinha do Pleistoceno, correspondendo ao estágio isotópico 2 do oxigê nio. O processo de incisão e preenchimento do sistema mais antigo é relacionado ao evento regressivo-transgressivo anterior, correspondendo aos estágios isotópicos do oxigênio 6-5. As linhas de paleodrenagens foram conectadas àquelas previamente reconhecidas na plataforma continental. À montante, elas podem ser conectadas ao curso atual dos rios Camaquã e Jacuí. As redes de paleodrenagens reconhecidas na zona costeira representam um sistema de ligação entre a bacia de drenagem continental e sítios deposicionais na bacia marginal, dissecando a plataforma continental exposta durante um evento de regressã o forçada. A descarga do sistema mais jovem alimentou sistemas deltaicos instalados da borda da plataforma durante o período de mar baixo que perdurou até o final da última glaciação. A última transgressão afogou e preencheu os vales costeiros, fechando a ligação entre a Lagoa dos Patos e o Oceano Atlântico. Os sistemas de paleodrenagens aqui considerados devem ter desempenhado um papel importante na arquitetura, distribuição faciológica e no espaço de acomodação da bacia marginal durante as oscilações do nível marinho no Quaternário. Seismic studies reveals paleochannels that dissected the Rio Grande do Sul coastal zone. Two paleochannels systems were established in the Patos Lagoon area. The channel filling of the younger system is Holocene. It is related to the last marine regression of the Pleistocene, corresponding to the oxygen isotope stage 2. The incision and filling of the older system is related to the previous regressive-transgressive event, corresponding to the oxygen isotope stages 6-5. The paleodrainage paths were connected with those previously recognized on the adjacent continental shelf. Landwards, the paleodrainage lines can be linked with the present courses of the Camaquã and Jacuí rivers. The paleodrainage network recognized on the coastal zone represents a river-shelf system, linking the drainage basin to the depositional settings on the marginal basin, bypassing the continental shelf exposed during a forced regression event. The bypassing discharge of the younger system fed delta systems installed on the shelf edge during the sea level lowstand that lasted until the end of the last glaciation. The last transgression drowned the incised drainage, infilling it and closing the inlets formerly existing between the Patos Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. The incised paleodrainage herein considered may have played an important role on the basin-margin architecture, facies distribution and accommodation during the Quaternary sea level oscillations.
