The Vinschgau Shear Zone (VSZ) is one of the largest and most significant shear zones developed under plastic conditions within the Austroalpine domain, juxtaposing the Ötztal and the Texel units to the Campo, Scharl and Sesvenna units during the building of the Eo-Alpine Orogen. The VSZ dominates the structural setting of a large portion of the central Austroalpine Late Cretaceous thrust stack. In order to fully assess the evolution of the VSZ, a multi-faceted approach based on detailed multiscale structural and petrochronological analyses has been carried out across representative transects of the shear zone in the Vinschgau Valley. The research has been performed with a view to characterizing kinematics, P–T conditions and timing of motion of the VSZ. Our fieldwork-based analyses suggest that the dip angle of mylonitic foliation increases from west to east with an E–W-trending stretching lineation which dips alternatively to the west and to the east, due to later folding related to the Cenozoic crustal shortening. The dominant top-to-W shear sense of the mylonites recognized in the field and confirmed by microstructural analyses led to exhumation of the upper Austroalpine nappes in the hanging wall of the shear zone; the Texel unit with Late Cretaceous eclogites and the Schneeberg and Ötztal units were all affected by Eo-Alpine amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Chemical and microstructural analyses suggest deformation temperatures of ca. 350–400 ∘C during shearing. Timing of deformation along the VSZ has been constrained for the first time through 40Ar/39Ar dating of syn-shearing micas, which reveal a Late Cretaceous age of the VSZ mylonites with ages ranging between 80 and 97 Ma. A systematic younging age of deformation occurs towards the central part of the shear zone in the studied transects. Vorticity analysis shows a clear decrease in the simple shear component correlated to the younging of mica ages towards the core of the shear zone. This evolution is consistent with the growth of a shear zone where shear strain localizes into its central part during deformation. The defined evolution of the VSZ sheds new light on how large-scale thrust-sense shear zones act and how much exhumation they can accommodate in the frame of an evolving orogenic wedge.

The study of selected logs from the Central-Eastern Iran Microplate (CEIM; area of Arusan) and Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone (SSZ; areas of Esfahan east and Tiran) constrains timing and evolution of the Cretaceous successions, resting unconformably on older sediments or non-conformably on the metamorphic basement. The Cretaceous marine transgression occurred almost synchronously on a levelled topography, documenting a previous deep erosion. Above a basal siliciclastic unit, rudist- and orbitolinid-rich lower Aptian limestone (“Orbitolina Limestone”, Shak Kuh Formation, Taft Formation) were deposited. Later, the stratigraphic evolution of the three studied areas differentiates, documenting changes in the depositional environments, reflecting different subsidence rates. In the Tiran area, marls and cherty limestones covering shallow-water limestones record a deepening trend. A differentiation of depositional environment is observed at Arusan, where conglomerates to the west pass to basinal sandstone and marls to the east. Here, a Coniacian-Campanian reprise of the carbonate production (with skeletal limestones rich in rudists, ostreids, and abundant orbitoidids) is covered by cherty marls. In the Esfahan north area, glauconitic hardground marls covered by chert record important deepening during the early Cenomanian, followed by the reprise of shallow-water carbonate production (middle Cenomanian). The synchronous deposition of Aptian carbonate successions on large parts of the CEIM, SSZ and North-Iranian domains suggests a rapid regional transgression controlled by a sea-level rise. Stratigraphic differentiation occurring in late Aptian–Cenomanian times, recording the onset of tectonic events differently affecting the aforementioned domains, likely related to the opening of oceanic seaways in the CEIM and the SSZ.

The WSW-ENE Meran-Mauls Fault (MMF) represents a break in the broadly E-W trending Periadriatic Fault (PAF), separating the Southern Alps from the N-verging wedge of the European Alps. Understanding the MMF evolution is mandatory to reconstruct the role of the entire PAF during the evolution of the belt since the late Cenozoic. Structural and microstructural analyses and paleostress calculations based on fault-slip data suggest the occurrence of four evolutionary stages for the MMF: 1) top-to-the-SE mylonites; 2) top-to-the-SE brittle faulting; 3) dextral faulting with re-activation of previous structures; 4) N–S compression associated with conjugate sets of mainly strike-slip fault systems. Paleostress reconstructions point to a σ2-σ3 permutation from stage 2 to stage 3, resulting in the switch from pure thrusting to strike-slip, followed by an anticlockwise rotation of the principal stress axes during stage 4, in a strike-slip regime related to N–S compression. Geochronological and thermochronological data point to 39-22 Ma age for stage 1, 22-17 Ma for stage 2, less than 17 Ma for stage 3. Our reconstruction strongly supports the interpretation of the MMF as a restraining bend of the PAF, which was weakly reactivated along its eastern portion as a dextral fault and later displaced by NNE-SSW left-lateral faults.

This contribution focuses on geochronological and kinematic data on the Main Central Thrust zone (MCTz) in the Garhwal Himalaya (NW India). A multidisciplinary approach combining detailed 2D and 3D microstructural observations with a new interpretation key of geochronological data on micas is here applied to reconstruct the polyphase evolution of a crustal-scale shear zone. The Ar Differential Release Plot and the use of X-ray micro-Computed Tomography allow to disentangle misleading Ar/Ar spectra of micas from mylonites and to avoid methodological limitation in vorticity estimates, respectively. This new approach allows to unravel the microstructural and petrological complexities linked to the temporal and kinematic evolution of the MCTz. The obtained data indicate a structurally downward shift of deformation, i.e. towards the foreland, across the MCTz, with an increasing pure shear component mirrored to a progressive rejuvenation of the mica age of structures.

The Greater Caucasus mountain belt is characterized by deep valleys, steep slopes and frequent seismic activity, the combination of which results in major landslide hazard. Along the eastern side of the Enguri water reservoir lies the active Khoko landside, whose head scarp zone affects the important Jvari-Khaishi-Mestia road, one of the few connections with the interior of the Greater Caucasus. Here, we present a database of measurement time series taken over a period of 4 years (2016–2019) that enable to compare slope deformation with meteorological factors and man-induced perturbations owing to variations in the water level of the reservoir. The monitoring system we used is composed of two digital extensometers, placed within two artificial trenches excavated across the landslide head scarp. The stations are equipped also with internal and near ground surface thermometers. The data set is integrated by daily measurements of rainfall and lake level. The monitoring system was set up in the framework of a NATO-funded project, aimed at assessing different types of geohazards affecting the Enguri artificial reservoir and the related hydroelectrical plant. Our results indicate that the Khoko landslide displacements appear to be controlled by variations in hydraulic load, in turn induced by lake level oscillations, with a delay of months between lake infilling and extension rate increase. Rainfall and temperature variations do not seem to affect slope deformations. We collected drone data to quantify the kinematics at extensional fractures and normal faults, integrated this information with seismological data to reconstruct the stress field, and critically compared the results with previous fieldwork to assess the best practice. As a key site, we analyzed a sector of the northeast rift of Mt Etna, an area affected by continuous ground deformation linked to gravity sliding of the volcano's eastern flank and dike injections. The studied sector is characterized also by the existence of eruptive craters and fissures and lava flows. This work shows that this rift segment is affected by a series of NNE- to NE-striking, parallel extensional fractures characterized by an opening mode along an average N105.7∘ vector. The stress field is characterized by a σHmin trending northwest–southeast. Normal faults strike parallel to the extensional fractures. The extensional strain obtained by cumulating the net offset at extensional fractures with the fault heave gives a stretching ratio of 1.003 in the northeastern part of the study area and 1.005 in the southwestern part. Given a maximum age of 1614 CE for the offset lavas, we obtained an extension rate of 1.9 cm yr−1 for the last 406 years. This value is consistent with the slip along the Pernicana Fault system, confirming that the NE rift structures accommodate the sliding of the eastern flank of the volcano.

The Middle–Upper Triassic Aghdarband Basin, NE Iran, consists of a strongly deformed marine and non-marine stratigraphic succession, deposited along the southern margin of Asia in a highly complex tectonic context related to a back-arc setting. The youngest deformed units of the Aghdarband area consist of a rather monotonous sequence of brown-colored shales, with intercalations of siltstones and fine-grained sandstones forming the Miankuhi Formation. The shale-dominated Miankuhi Formation rests on an unconformity surface, separating it from the underlying Sina Formation. A multidisciplinary study based on sedimentological, palynological, and paleobotanical data permits to reconstruct the depositional environments, sedimentary evolution, and paleoclimate conditions of the upper Sina and the lowermost Miankuhi formations. The palynological association of the lowermost part of the Miankuhi Formation yielded sporomorphs of the latest early Carnian to early late Carnian age. Qualitative and quantitative analyses document a shift from xerophytic associations in the upper Ladinian (upper Sina Formation) to hygrophytic assemblages in the Carnian (lower Miankuhi Formation). This increase in hygrophytic elements is also observed in coeval Tethyan outcrops at the same latitudinal belt, suggests a more humid climate in the lower part of the Miankuhi Formation, and correlates this part of the succession with a record of the Carnian Pluvial Episode. The sedimentological and stratigraphical analyses show an evolution from prodelta to delta setting in the upper Sina Formation, then an unconformity enhanced by an interval of fluvial deposits with histosol levels in the basal Miankuhi Formation, in correspondence with the hygrophytic assemblages. The unconformable boundary between the Miankuhi and the Sina formations is, consequently, interpreted as a result of the sea-level fall associated with the humid climate shift, occurring in close association with the first effects of the Eo-Cimmerian Orogeny along the suture zone, taking to a regional reorganization of the basins architecture and the end of volcanic activity in the back-arc region. The main deformations related to the Eo-Cimmerian event thus, correspond in the Aghdarband Basin to the tectonic event that deformed the Miankuhi Formation. This event is probably older than the middle Norian (217.1 ± 1.7 Ma) but younger than the late Carnian, testifying to a diachronicity in the record of collision along the Iranian Cimmerian blocks and Southern Laurasia according to the different considered structural positions.

The sedimentary succession exposed in the Northern Dalmatia Islands mainly consists of Cretaceous to Neogene shallow water carbonates, folded and imbricated within the External Dinarides thrust belt. During Cretaceous times, carbonate sediments were deposed on a heterogeneous, tectonically-influenced carbonate platform, which was then uplifted and eroded, as evidenced by a regional unconformity embracing the Late Cretaceous and Paleocene. Sedimentation resumed during the Eocene, when the area was part of the foreland basin of the Dinaric belt. With our geological and structural map of the southeastern Pag Island at the 1:25,000 scale, we refined the stratigraphic and structural setting and the tectono- sedimentary evolution of the area.

International audience; Innovations in virtual reality (VR) technology have led to exciting possibilities in teaching earth sciences, allowing students to experience complex geological sites that, due to cost and logistical reasons, they would not normally be able to experience. The need for high quality online digital learning resources and blended learning was brought to the forefront during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, as courses with a traditional physical field work component were forced to move online and provide alternatives to students. While it is unlikely that virtual field trips (VFT) would be accepted by students as a replacement of real-world fieldwork moving out of the pandemic, research shows promise that using IVR experiences can lead to enhanced learning outcomes in geosciences, warranting its inclusion on the curricula. This paper presents the outputs of a project to improve student learning in complex geological environments using VR. Here we outline a workflow that was developed to collect high resolution imagery using remote sensing to create digital outcrop models (DOM) of complex geological sites. Using this framework, this paper will then explore the use of VR for an investigation of the Husavik Triple Junction, a complex structural site in northern Iceland, explaining how the drone data was converted to a 3D DOM and demonstrating how VR can be used to simulate real world field mapping. Finally, we describe how these IVR activities have been integrated into taught modules at postgraduate level and discuss how the use of IVR experiences can complement existing geoscience curriculum design.

Dating structurally complex fault rocks often results in internally inconsistent ages, as several mineral generations are intergrown at scales << 10 µm and almost always altered to various degrees. We describe here 39Ar-40Ar stepheating using the combination of two independent indicators that allow the discrimination of coexisting mica generations from each other and from the ubiquitous retrogression/alteration phases. A necessary first step is electron probe microanalysis to assess both inventory and spatial distribution of the mineral phases that need to be distinguished a posteriori by 39Ar-40Ar systematics. One indicator is based on mica stoichiometry, which can be proxied by the 39Ar concentration in combination with the 37Ar/39Ar and 38Ar/39Ar (i.e. Ca/K and Cl/K) ratios. The other indicator is the furnace temperature, at which a degassing peak accompanying dehydration and structural collapse is observed. As dehydration rates depend on the average bond strength in the crystal structure, it is predicted (and indeed observed) that the temperature of the differential Ar release peak is variable among different minerals. As the Ca/Cl/K signatures of pure micas coincide with the Ar release peak, their combination identifies the isochemical steps that correspond to the degassing of pristine micas. Only these should be used to date the activity of shear zones.This procedure should become routine in analysing polydeformed metamorphic rocks.

Well-preserved SSE-dipping low-angle normal faults (LANF) active during the Early Permian (Cisuralian) were recognized along the northern margin of the Orobic Basin (central Southern Alps, N Italy). These faults, which escaped most of the Alpine deformations, exhumed the Variscan basement during the deposition of the upper part of the Lower Permian succession (Pizzo del Diavolo Formation). Fault planes show evidence of frictional processes typical of the upper crust associated with hydrothermal circulation, responsible for the deposition of cm to m thick tourmalinite and Uranium mineralization. The recognized LANFs interacted with high-angle normal faults producing half grabens that stored the Lower Permian deposits, where synsedimentary fault activity in their hangingwall is testified by abrupt vertical and lateral facies changes, thickness variations and by soft-sediment deformations. Mesoscopic structures, exposed in the hangingwall of a major LANF (the Aga-Vedello Fault system) along a synthetic high-angle normal fault, include conjugate normal faults, horst-and-graben, domino-style planar and listric faults, which clearly record synsedimentary deformations testified by liquefaction and dewatering structures, typical of pre-consolidation hydroplastic conditions. This xceptional record indicates deformations at shallow crustal level which occurred during the Early Permian along highangle normal faults soling into the LANFs, forming the northern boundary of the Orobic Basin. The outcrop continuity, the perfectly preserved relationships among high- and low-angle normal faults together with the synsedimentary record of fault activity and the occurrence of mesoscopic faults developed during the deposition of the sediments, make this case-study an excellent reference for the analysis of extensional tectonics in synsedimentary conditions. In addition, the occurrence of large LANF systems, typical of a stress regime characterized by a vertical σ1, suggests that the Lower Permian Orobic Basin was dominated by pure extension at least in the study area, alternatively to existing interpretations, which favor a transtensional origin of the basin. Strike-slip tectonics can be responsible for a later partial tectonic inversion of the basin, as testified by the angular unconformity with the overlying Upper Permian succession (Verrucano Lombardo), marking a Middle Permian stratigraphic gap.

Iceland is a natural laboratory where plate separation and mid-ocean ridge formation can be studied directly in the field. In this setting, it is not fully understood how magma interacts with faulting and fissuring, and how rift zones propagate. In order to improve the understanding of how these processes operate, we conducted a detailed field study about the kinematics and propagation of 33 Holocene faults along the N–S Theistareykir rift (North Volcanic Zone) and mapped all tension fractures. This rift hosts the Holocene Theistareykir central volcano, for which ground deformation data (InSAR and GPS) indicate an inflating shallow magma chamber throughout 2006–2008. Analyses of the cumulative fault slip distribution at 696 sites show two opposite directions of fault/rift propagation: The first, more developed, is directed northwards and affects the area located north of Theistareykir volcano, whereas south of the volcano, the rift propagates southwards. Tension fractures increase in frequency, with respect to faults, outwards from the volcano, along a N–S to NNE–SSW direction. The presence of aligned vents, dykes and topographic bulging along some of the N–S structures, and the active magma chamber below Theistareykir volcano, suggest that faults and tension fractures propagate following repeated dyke intrusions from the magma chamber outward along the plate margin. The fact that the rift is more developed north of the volcano than south of it, is interpreted as the effect of buttressing from another, coterminous magma chamber sitting below a neighbouring central volcano. Other causes for the general observed pattern such as tectonic stresses, mechanical interaction of faults, and changes in the rheological characteristics of rocks, are discussed as well.

The mechanical strength of foliated rocks is typically anisotropic because it varies with the orientation of the foliation relative to the applied principal stresses and commonly depends on phyllosicate content and phyllosicate physical interconnectivity. We constrain the degree of mechanical anisotropy associated with pre-existing planar discontinuities, such as metamorphic foliations and inherited faults, by combining paleostress analysis and meso- and microscale characterization of brittle failure modes in different phyllosilicate-bearing rocks outcropping in the Sierras de Cordoba (SDC) of Central Argentina. The SDC show evidence of a long brittle deformation history from Early Triassic – Present with three distinct brittle deformational events. Each phase caused new strain increments accommodated by the formation of newly-formed faults or by the reactivation of inherited discontinuities. Structural investigations reveal that gneisses and phyllites deformed by different failure modes during the different events. Therefore, we were able to use a conceptual field-scale triaxial experiment by applying a stress model based on normalised slip-tendency analysis. We constrained the friction coefficient for slip along the foliations (μs) and along pre-existing faults (μf) to 0.2 to 0.3 and 0.4, respectively. These values fit independent estimates for similar rocks confirming the potential of our approach for other case studies.

The convergence between the Arabian and the Eurasian plates resulted in the development of the Greater Caucasus (GC) and the Lesser Caucasus fold-and-thrust belts, separated across most of their length by the Transcaucasian depression. The whole sub-horizontal shortening of the Caucasus was quantified at hundreds of kilometers and, according to several studies, reached its maximum rate in the Miocene-Pliocene. At present, convergence between the Eurasian and African-Arabian plates is still active, producing widespread deformation within the mountain belt and in the surrounding regions, as testified to by seismological, paleoseismological and GPS data.Understanding the active tectonics of the Caucasus is of paramount importance for a better assessment of geohazards, especially seismic hazard. Moreover, there is a major concentration of residents in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, hosting 1.2 million citizens, and in Baku, the capital of the Azerbaijan Republic, with over 2.3 million citizens; both cities are located in active tectonic basins at the southern foothills of the GC. Hundreds of rural villages are scattered in the mountain regions, and all were built without taking into consideration antiseismic criteria. All the above shows that the Caucasus and Transcaucasus regions are subject to an extreme seismic hazard and risk.Here, we describe the active kinematics of the Greater Caucasus (territories of Georgia, Azerbaijan and Russia) through an integrated analysis of seismological, structural-geological and GPS data. Alignments of crustal earthquake epicentres indicate that most seismic areas are located along the southern margin of the mountain belt and in its north-eastern sector, in correspondence of major, active WNW-ESE faults, parallel to the mountain range. Focal Mechanism Solutions (FMS) delineate dominant reverse fault kinematics in most sectors of the mountain belt, although swarms of strike-slip FMS indicate the presence of active transcurrent faulting, especially along the southeastern border of the Greater Caucasus. The mountain belt is characterized by dominant NNE-SSW-oriented P-axes. In the central-southern sector, in correspondence of the local collision between the Lesser and Greater Caucasus, P-axes are mainly NNW-SSE oriented. GPS data show dominant motions to the NNW, with rates increasing in eastward direction. All observations are consistent with a component of eastward escape of the central-eastern part of the Greater Caucasus.

A new, crustal-scale structural model aimed at illustrating the recent geometry of the western Greater Caucasus, has been built based on surface and subsurface data, in agreement with the theory of fault-related folds. The crustal-scale, structural cross-section shows that the western Greater Caucasus has a double vergence with a pro- and a retro-wedge actively propagating towards the Rioni foreland basins to the south and the Terek basin to the north. The retro-wedge and the Terek foreland basin developed on the upper plate, whereas the pro-wedge and the Rioni foreland basin developed on the lower, subducting plate. The formation of an antiformal stack in the axial zone of the western Greater Caucasus is related to reactivation of pre-existing normal faults during the orogeny. The main style of deformation within the pro-and retro-wedge is a series of fault-propagation and fault-bend folds, duplexes and structural wedges. Within the frontal part of the pro-and retro-wedge, a series of thrust-top basins developed.

The purpose of the present work is to integrate previous research focused on the Abuli Samsari Volcanic Ridge, situated in the Javakheti Highland, Georgia. Through a synergic approach, consisting in the collection and analysis of field and satellite data, combined with the results of previously published research, we have been able to define the overall structure of the volcanic ridge, which, on its northern sector, is cut across by two parallel pipelines, carrying oil and gas from the Caspian Sea to the western countries. Despite the likelihood of seismic or volcanic events in the area, geohazard assessment had never been adequately performed for this section of the pipelines’ route across Southern Georgia. The most relevant outcomes of our effort, aimed at filling this critical gap, consist in: the identification and mapping of eruptive centers and tectonic lineaments; the reconstruction of magma pathways; the definition of the expected moment magnitude for possible earthquakes; the assessment of orientation of the maximum horizontal stress from the Late Miocene to the present day. We have used these results to evaluate the current seismic and volcanic hazards affecting the Abuli Samsari Volcanic Ridge, which may have major impacts on the security of the pipelines. The calculated, about N-S directed maximum horizontal stress may play a key role in volcanic reactivation, which might occur in the form of fissure eruptions and the formation of new vents and monogenetic as well as composite volcanoes. As the track of the pipelines lies just north of the younger volcanic edifice in the ridge we suggest that these lifelines could be severely affected by possible future volcanic eruptions, which might bring about a major interruption in oil delivery from the Caspian Sea towards the west.

Tectonic pseudotachylytes are thought to be unique to certain water‐deficient seismogenic environments and their presence is considered to be rare in the geological record. Here, we present field and experimental evidence that frictional melting can occur in hydrothermal fluid‐rich faults hosted in the continental crust. Pseudotachylytes were found in the >40 km‐long Bolfín Fault Zone of the Atacama Fault System, within two ca. 1 m‐thick (ultra)cataclastic strands hosted in a damage‐zone made of chlorite‐epidote‐rich hydrothermally altered tonalite. This alteration state indicates that hydrothermal fluids were active during the fault development. Pseudotachylytes, characterized by presenting amygdales, cut and are cut by chlorite‐, epidote‐ and calcite‐bearing veins. In turn, crosscutting relationship with the hydrothermal veins indicates pseudotachylytes were formed during this period of fluid activity. Rotary shear experiments conducted on bare surfaces of hydrothermally altered rocks at seismic slip velocities (3 m s−1) resulted in the production of vesiculated pseudotachylytes both at dry and water‐pressurized conditions, with melt lubrication as the primary mechanism for fault dynamic weakening. The presented evidence challenges the common hypothesis that pseudotachylytes are limited to fluid‐deficient environments, and gives insights into the ancient seismic activity of the system. Both field observations and experimental evidence, indicate that pseudotachylytes may easily be produced in hydrothermal environments, and could be a common co‐seismic fault product. 3D geological modelling of complex metamorphic terrains that underwent a sequence of ductile and brittle deformation events is an extremely challenging task. Difficulties start from the input data that are frequently sparse and heterogeneous in quality and distribution. In projects based on field data only (without significant subsurface data) uncertainties are even more pronounced, but, in our project, we had the rugged topography of the Western Alps on our side, with elevations ranging from c. 1200 m to c. 3200 m and very continuous outcrops. Other problems, that we address in this contribution, arise during the modelling process. We tested different commercial software packages and some open-source research libraries and we found that no one is capable of modelling our complex structures out-of-the-box. This is not surprising since generally these codes, and particularly the commercial ones, are geared towards modelling gently deformed sedimentary sequences. However, it is possible to overcome a large range of obstacles by “fooling” implicit structural modelling algorithms, simply “cheating” on the geological meaning of model entities. This means (1) developing a conceptual model of polyphase ductile and brittle deformation, (2) finding geological/mathematical entities that are at the same time implemented in the code and able to represent the complex structures, and finally (3) carrying out the implicit modelling. For instance, tectonic contacts between large-scale tectono-metamorphic units can be treated as unconformities (and not as faults) to obtain a realistic representation. In some cases, also conformal lithological boundaries can be considered as unconformities with the goal of allowing larger thickness variations. In other situations, a “fake” stratigraphy where the same units are repeated several times can be used to model sequences of isoclinal folds and thin tectonic slices. In this contribution, some of these modelling solutions are compared in terms of (1) their straightforward implementation, and (2) their ability to generate models that properly fit the very detailed geological maps available in our study area (c. 60 km2 mapped at 1:5.000-1:10.000 with a dense set of structural stations).

In the present work we applied the use of the UAV-based Structure from Motion technique (SfM) to geological and geohazard studies, with emphasis placed on active tectonics and volcano-tectonics cases. Our aim is to obtain high-resolution orthomosaics and Digital Surface Models (DSMs) in two study areas: the Theistareykir Fissure Swarm within the Northern Volcanic Zone (NVZ) of Iceland and the active Khoko landslide, Enguri reservoir, in the Greater Caucasus, Georgia. The first is affected by seismic and volcanic hazard, the second by landslide and hydrogeological hazard. Regarding the NVZ, by analysing the resulting Orthomosaics and DSMs we collected a total of 453 quantitative measurements of the amount of opening and opening direction of Holocene extension fractures and 36 measurements of the height of fault scarps. These data allowed us to assess an overall spreading direction of N106.4° during Holocene times within the studied rift zone, which has been compared with geodetic motion vectors, and a stretching ratio of 1.013–1.017 for 8–10ka old lava units. We conclude that deformation in the area is related to both dyke intrusions and extensional tectonics. In the Greater Caucasus, we applied the method to identify the main geomorphological features related to the Khoko landslide and to measure the scarp height of the principal slip surfaces, in order to improve geomorphological knowledge of the landslide, and contribute to the assessment of the hydrogeological hazard of the area. At a general level, our results suggest that the use of UAV-based SfM is a convenient and efficient way to collect plenty of data aimed at better assessing geohazards in areas prone to catastrophic natural phenomena like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides.

In the present work, we test the application of boat-camera-based photogrammetry as a tool for Virtual Outcrops (VOs) building on geological mapping and data collection. We used a 20 MPX camera run by an operator who collected pictures almost continuously, keeping the camera parallel to the ground and opposite to the target during a boat survey. Our selected target was the northern part of Santorini's caldera wall, a structure of great geological interest. A total of 887 pictures were collected along a 5.5-km-long section along an almost vertical caldera outcrop. The survey was performed at a constant boat speed of about 4 m/s and a coastal approaching range of 35.8 to 296.5m. Using the Structure from Motion technique we: i) produced a successful and high-resolution 3D model of the studied area, ii) designed high-resolution VOs for two selected caldera sections, iii) investigated the regional geology, iv) collected qualitative and quantitative structural data along the vertical caldera cliff, and v) provided a new VO building approach in extreme logistic conditions.

In the area of Arcadia Planitia in the Northern hemisphere of Mars, mounds indicating fluid and sediment emissions have been already recognized. Here, we show that through fractal and fracture‐spacing analyses of a large vent population it is possible to infer the mechanical layering of the underlying subsurface. Our work includes the mapping of an entire population of 9,028 vents over an area of 122,000 km2. The analysis of mound distribution at the surface led to the formulation of inferences about the subsurface feeding conduits, and to the identification of three mechanical discontinuities at c. 4–5, c. 14–23, and c. 50–55 km. This evidence matches the mechanical stratigraphy recorded by the InSight NASA mission, and is in agreement with independent previous subsurface global modeling, supporting our conclusions., Plain Language Summary: The Martian northern hemisphere displays mounds interpreted to be the result of sediment and water erupting onto the surface. We analyzed the mounds spatial distribution and found patterns that reflects the extent at depth of the subsurface conduits that fed those mounds (array of fractures, i.e., high permeability pathways) allowing the sediment and water upwelling. These conduits thus connect the surface to the source of the erupted materials at depth. These source levels are located at the base of layers characterized by mechanical properties different from the adjacent ones (e.g., loose sediments vs. crystalline bedrock). Such layers are hence referred as mechanical discontinuities. We identified three discontinuities: at c. 4–5, c. 14–23, and c. 50–55 km. Our outcomes match the mechanical stratigraphy recorded by the InSight NASA mission, and is in agreement with independent previous subsurface global modeling, supporting our conclusions., Key Points: We present a complete mapping of a large vent population in the Arcadia Planitia region of the northern plains of Mars. Peridotites of Ulten Zone (Eastern Alps, N Italy) show a transition from coarse protogranular spinel lherzolites to fine-grained amphibole + garnet peridotites, recorded by the crystallization of garnet coronas around spinel. Pyroxenite veins, transposed along the peridotite foliation, show a similar metamorphic evolution from coarse-grained (garnet-free) websterites to fine-grained garnet websterites. In both peridotites and websterites, garnet previously exsolved from porphyroclastic high-temperature pyroxenes and later crystallized along the foliation. This evolution has been interpreted to reflect cooling and pressure increase of websterites and host peridotites from spinel- to garnet-facies conditions. Microstructures and crystallographic orientation data indicate that the re-equilibration of garnet websterites in the garnet stability field occurred during deformation. Porphyroclastic pyroxenes have been interpreted to deform by dislocation glide and creep. In particular, TEM observations indicate the activation of the (100)[010] slip system in orthopyroxene. Core-and-mantle microstructures also suggest that dislocation creep was aided by subgrain rotation recrystallization, leading to the formation of neoblastic pyroxenes. These recrystallized grains deformed by diffusion-accommodated grain boundary sliding, as indicated by the occurrence of quadruple junctions and straight, aligned grain boundaries. The transition from dislocation creep to diffusion creep in websterites was accompanied by the crystallization of garnet along foliation, which triggered the pinning of the recrystallized matrix and stabilized the fine-grained microtexture for diffusion creep, promoting rheological weakening. Garnet websterites of Ulten Zone thus offer a unique opportunity to investigate the effects of reaction softening during the corner flow in the supra-subduction lithospheric mantle induced by the descending slab.

The structural analysis of large intracontinental wrench faults is fundamental for deciphering the long-term evolution of continental crust in complex areas in terms of their geodynamic evolution and large-scale crustal block displacements. In this contribution, we demonstrate a pre-Miocene dextral activity of the present-day left-lateral Great Kavir - Doruneh Fault System (GKDFS, Central Iran), one of the major intracontinental active strike-slip faults extending from the Afghan border to the Nain region between Central Iran and the Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone. We document important dextral shearing recorded along a segment of the GKDFS, the Arusan Fault System (AFS), located east of Jandaq, close to the present-day active trace of the GKDFS. The AFS include several ENE-WSW striking strands exposed for a length of more than 50km, which couple pre-Cretaceous ophiolites and metamorphic basement units with the Cretaceous succession of the Khur basin. The fault shows transpressional structures consistent with a dextral shear including thrusts and en échelon folds affecting the Cretaceous carbonate units. Paleostress reconstruction based on mesoscopic fault analysis and related folds geometry allowed to establish vorticity parameters indicating that deformation occurred close to a total simple shear regime with a calculated Wk between 0.9 and 1. The enormous Meso-Cenozoic dextral displacements occurred along the AFS and along the entire GKDFS are attested by the up to several hundreds of kilometers offset of the Paleotethys suture zone, from NE Iran to the western border of Central Iran.

Low-Angle Normal Faults (LANFs) represent in the central Southern Alps area (N Italy) the main structures along which the Variscan basement is in contact with the Upper Carboniferous-Permian volcanic-sedimentary succession. Tourmalinites frequently occur along LANFs, usually replacing former cataclasites. The mineralogy and chemical composition of tourmalinites point to a metasomatic origin. LANFs, together with high-angle faults, controlled the opening of the Permian Orobic Basin and likely acted as a preferred pathway for hydrothermal fluids that triggered the Boron-metasomatism. Along the Aga-Vedello LANF, tourmalinites appear to have formed after the cessation of fault activity, as no brittle post-metasomatism deformation overprint has been observed. These relationships suggest that the circulation of B-rich fluids occurred after the opening of the Orobic Basin that is broadly constrained to the Early Permian. At the same time, ca. 285–270 Ma, a strong magmatic activity affected all the Southern Alps, ranging in composition from mafic to acidic rocks and from intrusions at deep crustal levels to effusive volcanic products. The Early Permian magmatism was likely the source of the late-stage hydrothermal fluids that formed the tourmalinites. The same fluids could also have played a significant role in the formation of the Uranium ore deposit of the Novazza-Vedello mining district, as the ore bodies in the Vedello valley are concentrated along the basement-cover contact.

Despite that many field studies on joint attribute statistics are available in the literature, there is still an ongoing debate on the most effective statistical treatment to properly describe the distribution of a fundamental parameter like joint spacing. This may also relate to the objective difficulty of collecting very large datasets from single linear scanlines directly in the field, because of limited exposures. To overcome such a limitation, we selected a spectacular outcrop of the Miocene Marnoso-Arenacea Formation turbidite sandstones located near the Coniale village, in the Northern Apennines (Italy), where a vertical cliff provides a 100% continuous outcrop about 90 m high and 280 m long, with well-accessible exposures at its base, along the Santerno River. This setting allows combining data acquisition on a photogrammetric DOM (digital outcrop model) covering a representative sector of the outcrop, with ground truthing by direct measurements in the field. More than 2000 joints were identified in 9 linear scanlines traced in the DOM along mechanical layers with different thickness. Comparison with field data indicates that both joint orientation and spacing data from the DOM are very reliable. The scanlines include between 549 and 37 joints, depending on layer thickness, allowing to perform robust statistical analysis. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K–S), Cramer-von Mises (CvM) and Anderson-Darling (A-D) nonparametric tests were used to identify the probability density function(s) that best fit spacing data among exponential, Gamma, log-normal and normal distributions. The Gamma distribution turned out as the most probable in most cases. In some specific sectors along all scanlines, joint density is significantly greater than the average for the presence of joint clusters. In some cases, joint clusters are vertically aligned with those in underlying and/or overlying scanlines, thus resulting in thoroughgoing joint corridors. Comparison of spacing statistics inside and outside joint corridors/clusters indicates a typical transition from Gamma distributions outside joint corridors/clusters, to log-normal distributions inside them. The presence of joint clusters and corridors, as well as FSR, mode/mean ratio, JSR, and FSI values, suggests that diffuse jointing in the sandstone layers of the turbiditic succession reached the saturation stage before a normal probability density function was produced, and then further strain was accommodated by localized deformation in clusters and corridors.

The exhumation of the Lepontine Dome in the Central Alps was mainly driven by extensional shear zones at its borders. The Simplon Shear Zone (SSZ), formed as a consequence of east-west lateral extrusion perpendicular to north-south convergence between Adria and Europa plates, has been the leading structure in the exhumation of the western sector of the Lepontine Dome where the deepest rocks of Central Alps are nowadays exposed. We present here a multidisciplinary study of the SSZ combining fieldwork, microstructural analyses, vorticity estimates, quartz c-axis fabric analysis, quartz paleopiezometry and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology. The SSZ evolved from epidote-amphibolite to greenschist facies and then brittle conditions during shearing. A decrease of simple shear component from 88% to 37% towards the top of the shear zone is observed, with mylonites displaying ages within the 12-8 Ma time interval. Differential stress (59–78 MPa) and strain rate (10−11-10−12 s−1) estimates are in agreement with values obtained for crustal-scale low-angle normal faults developed at medium to shallow crustal levels. Our multiscale and multidisciplinary approach points out that the SSZ experienced a complex evolution, with shear strain heterogeneously distributed across the shear zone in the frame of a decrease of the simple shear component and increase of the differential flow stress toward the top of the shear zone.

We present a semi-automatic workflow aimed at extracting quantitative structural data from point clouds obtained with avionic and terrestrial laser scanners (Lidar and TLS). The workflow is characterized by a calibration phase followed by an automatic data-collection phase. The large datasets of “fractures” mapped in this way are analysed with statistical methods allowing to define representative parameters of the fracture network.In the first phase, the intervention of an expert interpreter with structural geology skills is fundamental to evaluate which features can be interpreted as fractures in the point clouds. In the second phase, an automatic segmentation and classification is performed, based on phase 1 calibration, that allows extracting very large fracture datasets. The main steps in phase 1 are: manual segmentation of facets representing fracture surfaces, orientation analysis and definition of fracture sets (possibly supported by kinematic analysis), definition of orientation parameters to be used for automatic segmentation. Phase 2 analysis proceeds with the automatic segmentation of subset point clouds that include just one fracture set. In these point clouds, facets representing fractures lying on different planes are well separated and disconnected, and this allows applying automatic vectorization techniques that extract individual facets representing single fractures on the outcrop surface. The datasets issued from this processing are analysed with automatic algorithms allowing to define fracture spacing and orientation statistics with a very large support, that would not have been allowed by other methodologies.

Fault damage zones can be preferential conduits for geofluids, depending on the secondary permeability developed with fracturing. Large-scale outcrop analogues allow a complete characterization of fracture networks, that cannot be satisfactorily imaged in the subsurface (e.g. with seismics). In this project we mapped fractures in the damage zone of the Victoria Fault, a major normal fault crosscutting Miocene shallow-water carbonates of Malta, combining field analysis and a high resolution photogrammetric Digital Outcrop Model (DOM). This allowed characterizing (i) the damage zone width, (ii) its spatial organization, (iii) geometrical parameters of the fracture network and (iv) its connectivity, and (v) the variability of these parameters in different stratigraphic units.

We present a new geological and structural map of the Gran Sometta -Tournalin ridge (Valle d’Aosta). In this area we have Pennidic ophiolitic units of the Combin (Co) and Zermatt-Saas (ZS) zones. In addition, in this area the continental cover sequence of the Pancherot-Cime Bianche-Bettaforca (PCB) unit crops out, close to the base of the Combin zone. The PCB and Co are characterized by Alpine greenschist facies assemblages, while the ZS is characterized by eclogitic assemblages. The greenschist and HP complexes are juxtaposed along the extensional Combin Fault Zone.Our detailed 1:5000 map allowed reconstructing in 3D, and with a high level of detail, the spatial and crosscutting relationships between metamorphic layering (e.g. calcschists and metabasites in the Co), ductile foliations and shear zones, semi-brittle features (e.g. extensional crenulation cleavage – ECC - along the Combin Fault Zone), and post-metamorphic brittle faults.The metamorphic layering and foliations are sub-horizontal in this area, and the ECC associated to the Combin Fault results in large components of horizontal stretching. These features are crosscut by two sets of high-angle normal faults, of Oligocene and Miocene age (according to literature), and, thanks to the favourable exposure and numerous structural data, we have been able to reconstruct these structures and their relationships in 3D.

We present preliminary results of a structural analysis and 3D modelling project carried out along a transect in the Santerno Valley, between Firenzuola (Tuscany) and the outskirts of Imola. The aim of the project is to combine surface geological and structural data (available thanks to the national geological mapping CARG project and original surveys), with the available subsurface data (2D seismics and a few wells), and obtain a comprehensive 3D framework for deformation in this key area of the Northern Apennines. In addition, by combining geodetic, seismicity and interferometric data with the 3D structural model, we are able to obtain a better picture of the active structures in the area.Our analysis shows that the studied transect is at the northern periclinal hinge of a regional anticline/window where the Marnoso-Arenacea Formation crops out and is crosscut by several regional-scale thrusts. Subsurface data suggest that these relatively shallow thrusts are rooted at the top of Mesozoic carbonates, that do not crop out in the area. Different balancing algorithms confirm a relevant along-strike variation of slip along these thrusts, that reduce their offset towards the periclinal hinge to the west.In the more external part of the transect, towards the lower hills and the plain around Imola, a regional-scale pop-up, evidenced by the late-Messinian unconformity, is the main feature in subsurface datasets. This structure is rooted at the base of Mesozoic carbonates and is characterized by large and continuous ramps that can be considered candidates for recent earthquakes in the area.

We present a study on the paleoseismic Gole Larghe Fault Zone (GLFZ), composed of hundreds of sub-parallel faults hosted in tonalites of the Adamello Massif (Italian Southern Alps), where we collected a complete transect across the fault zone, including the background host rocks, over a thickness of >1km.Along this transect, we studied the correlation between fracture spacing (for “fracture” here we mean joints, veins, faults, shear fractures, and all other brittle structures) and position with a robust non-parametric approach. This analysis, new for fracture distribution studies, allows detecting volumes of the fault zone with clustering or a trend in spacing, versus volumes where the spatial distribution is stationary. The analysis reveals that the GLFZ can be subdivided in “stationary volumes” where fractures shows stationary statistical properties. Each one of these volumes can be completely characterized with scanline and/or scanarea surveys to obtain a complete and statistically sound estimate of all fracture parameters (spacing, intensity, density, length, height, orientation, topology, etc.).Within the GLFZ we have two main classes of structures: (i) “master” faults that are sub-parallel to the fault zone and are always characterized by pseudotachylytes and/or cataclasites, and (ii) minor “fractures” (e.g. Riedel fractures, joints, veins, etc.) that are oblique to the fault zone and interconnect the former. Out of the GLFZ we observe a background fracturing that is associated to the cooling of the Adamello tonalites under deviatoric tectonic stress (“cooling joints”).By comparing fracture statistics within and outside the fault zone, we demonstrated that master faults within the GLFZ were almost completely inherited from the “cooling joints” of the host rocks. The cooling joints just grew in length and became completely interconnected at the scale of the seismic rupture. This means that, at least in the case of the GLFZ, the large faults and fractures along which seismic ruptures were running do not add significantly to the earthquake energy budget, because they were already present in the system before the onset of seismic activity. The only fractures to be considered in this budget are the minor interconnecting fractures (e.g. Riedel fractures, joints, veins, etc.) that are coated with pseudotachylytes.These observations confirm once again the classical assumption that seismic ruptures propagate along pre-existing discontinuities and do not, in general, tend to fracture intact rocks.

Iceland is one of the most recognizable and iconic places on Earth, offering an unparalleled chance to admire the most powerful natural phenomena related to the combination of geodynamic, tectonic and magmatic forces, such as active rifting, volcanic eruptions and subvolcanic intrusions. We have identified and selected 25 geosites from the Sn&aelig, fellsnes Peninsula and the Northern Volcanic Zone, areas where most of the above phenomena can be admired as they unfold before the viewers&rsquo, eyes. We have qualitatively assessed the selected volcano&ndash, tectonic geosites by applying a set of criteria derived from previous studies and illustrated them through field photographs, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-captured images and 3-D models. Finally, we have discussed and compared the different options and advantages provided by such visualization techniques and proposed a novel, cutting-edge approach to geoheritage promotion and popularization, based on interactive, navigable Virtual Outcrops made available online.

International audience; Direct outcrop observation and field data collection are key techniques in research, teaching and outreach activities in volcanic areas. However, very often outcrops are of difficult or impossible access, such as in areas with active volcanoes or steep cliffs. Classical remote-sensing surveys by satellites or airplanes are expensive, rarely reach sufficient resolution to allow high-quality 3D visualisation of volcanic features and do not facilitate mapping of vertical cliffs. We describe a novel approach that uses immersive Virtual Reality (VR) based on real-world 3D Digital Outcrop Models (DOMs) from images surveyed by “unoccupied aerial system” (UAS). 3D DOMs are built up using the Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry technique, and a VR scene is created using game engine technologies. Immersive real-time exploration of the environment is possible through a head-mounted display, e.g. Oculus Rift. Tools embedded in the VR environment allow the user to map polygons, lines and point features. Tools also allow to measure orientation, dip, inclination, azimuth, area and thickness and even take virtual photographs. Using three examples of volcanic areas with different geological features, we demonstrate the potential of our approach to allow users to be able to virtually map and measure remotely, and to collect data for research and teaching. Our approach is of paramount importance also for outreach, as it allows non-specialist audiences (e.g. common citizens) to experience and appreciate highly complex volcanic features through customised, hands-on immersive VR tools.

The mechanics and seismogenic behaviour of fault zones are strongly influenced by their internal structure, intended as three-dimensional geometry and topology of the fault/fracture network and distribution of the fault zone rocks with related physical properties. In this perspective, the internal structure of the extensional seismically active Vado di Corno Fault Zone (Central Apennines, Italy) was quantified by combining high-resolution structural mapping with modern techniques of 3D fault network modelling over ∼2 km along fault strike. The fault zone is hosted in carbonate host rocks, was exhumed from ∼2 km depth, accommodated a normal slip of ∼1.5-2 km since Early-Pleistocene and cuts through the Pliocene Omo Morto Thrust Zone that was partially reactivated in extension.The exceptional exposure of the Vado di Corno Fault Zone footwall block allowed us to reconstruct with extreme detail the geometry of the older Omo Morto Thrust Zone and quantify the spatial arrangement of master and subsidiary faults, and fault zone rocks within the Vado di Corno Fault Zone. The combined analysis of the structural map and of a realistic 3D fault network model with kinematic, topological and slip tendency analyses, pointed out the crucial role of the older Omo Morto Thrust Zone geometry (i.e. the occurrence and position of lateral ramps) in controlling the along-strike segmentation and slip distribution of the active Vado di Corno normal fault zone. These findings were tested with a boundary element mechanical model that highlights the effect of inherited compressional features on the Vado di Corno Fault Zone internal structure and returns distributions and particularly partitioning of slip comparable with those measured in the field.Lastly, we discuss the exhumed Vado di Corno Fault Zone as an analogue for the shallow structure of many seismic sources in the Central Apennines. The mechanical interaction of the inherited Omo Morto Thrust Zone and the extensional Vado di Corno Fault Zone generated along-strike and down-dip geometrical asperities. Similar settings could play first-order control on the complex spatio-temporal evolution and rupture heterogeneity of earthquakes in the region (e.g. 2009 Mw 6.1 L’Aquila earthquake).

International audience; Fault damage zones can act as a preferential corridor for fluid flow in the subsurface, and for this reason the characterization of their structure, including the attributes of the associated fracture network, is fundamental. In this work, we characterize the damage zone of the Qala fault, a normal fault developed in platform carbonates of the Gozo Island (Maltese Islands). We propose a new workflow that combines scanline and scan-area analysis applied on a high resolution DOM. Linear scanlines allow to characterize fracture spatial distribution, detect stationary area and identify damage zone width. Areal sampling permits to extract the fracture parameters matching the stationary 1D domains. This new approach allows us to: (1) univocally separate the damage zone from the background fractures, (2) identify fracture corridors, (3) collect fracture parameters (length, trend, density, intensity, spacing and topology), (4) identify the REV of the fracture density, intensity and topology and (5) characterize the fracture network connectivity.

There are several viewpoints about the relationship of mud volcano eruptions with earthquakes, or earthquake occurrences with mud volcano eruptions. This paper demonstrates evaluation of dynamic strains triggered by Caspian earthquakes which occurred on the 25th of November, 2000, south of Baku city with Mw 6.1 and 6.2. Consequently, we researched the relationship between seismic regime and mud volcano eruptions in Azerbaijan located in Shamakhi-Gobustan-Absheron. We investigated over 30 mud volcanoes with over 100 km distance from near epicentres of Caspian earthquakes in terms of time within five years before and after Caspian earthquakes in 2000. As a result of computation, dynamic strain demonstrates that all the volcanoes in the study area are affected mostly by Caspian earthquake-induced transient strain. A larger number of mud eruptions occurred at a distance greater than 50-60 km from the 2000 Caspian epicentres. Mud volcanoes were erupted within 2-3 years at the range of 40 and 110 km from the epicentres. After three years from earthquake occurrence in Caspian Sea, mud volcanoes were erupted at the distance more than 70 km. The largest number of eruptions occurred within two years from the earthquakes, in particular the highest frequency is within six months. In particular, several eruptions occurred within 8 months from the shock, after this period the number of eruption for months is more scattered and discontinuous The comparison made us conclude that dynamic stresses are predominantly interlinked with triggering demonstrating higher magnitude, and consequently eruptions are favored up to 1-2 years following the earthquakes.

We present a new interpretation of the Bashgumbaz Complex (BSC), a fragment of a large mafic-ultramafic nappe exposed along the Alichur Valley in the Pamir, whose significance is of paramount importance for the understanding of the Cimmerian orogeny in South Pamir. The BSC is exposed along the contact between the SE and SW Pamir and consists of a low-grade metamorphic association dominated by gabbros and serpentinized harzburgites with minor bodies of quartzdiorite and plagiogranite tectonically coupled to basaltic and rhyolitic volcanic products. Tectonic slices of metasedimentary rocks are interleaved within the complex. The BSC, with its upper part, is in contact with a sedimentary unit rich in olistostostromes with exotic blocks containing Lower Permian fauna showing affinity with Central Pamir. The BSC is intruded by a Lower Cretaceous granitic body with a U-Pb zircon age of 117 Ma, crosscutting the whole complex. Petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical data suggest a supra-subduction-zone affinity for the gabbros and diorites. Significant enrichment in LILE and LREE compared to HREE, coupled with negative anomalies of Nb, Ti, Zr and other HFSE support this interpretation. U-Th-Pb dating of zircon from a diorite provides a lower Norian (ca. 222 Ma) youngest-crystallization-age constraint, suggesting that the BSC formed in a supra-subduction setting on the South Pamir terrane prior to the collision between Central and South Pamir blocks and was later underthrust and then obducted onto the southern margin of the closing Rushan-Pshart Ocean, which separated these two Gondwanan terranes during the Permian–Triassic. The obduction of the Bashgumbaz ophiolites can be considered as a time constraint for the collision between the South and Central Pamir terranes, which occurred within the framework of the Cimmerian orogeny that shaped the southern margin of Eurasia

The Upper Palaeozoic Godar-e-Siah Complex of Jandaq, Central Iran, comprises three isolated, fault-bounded outcrops exposing Palaeozoic fossiliferous carbonates, volcanics and siliciclastics, which are markedly distinct from the surrounding sedimentary successions. The three outcrops, that emerge below Cretaceous and younger sediments, are the Chah Rizab outcrop, the Godar-e-Siah northern outcrop, and the Godar-e-Siah central outcrop. Their sedimentary successions strongly differ from the typical passive margin successions of Gondwanan affinity that characterize the Yazd, Lut and Tabas blocks of Central Iran and the Alborz in North Iran. To understand the origin of these profound differences, we first calibrated the age of the Jandaq successions: U-Pb radiometric zircons ages, obtained from granitoid boulders in the conglomerates at Chah Rizab and in the Godar-e-Siah northern outcrop, gave a Late Devonian to Mississippian age. Biostratigraphic data from brachiopods and fusulinids from the Godar-e-Siah northern and central outcrops indicate a Pennsylvanian age. The age of the successions is thus post-Visean to Pennsylvanian. The petrographic composition of the siliciclastic deposits indicates the erosion of a magmatic arc. To understand where the Jandaq complex could have been located at that time, we have assessed the palaeobiogeographic affinity of the faunas. The collected brachiopods and fusulinids assemblages are mostly similar to coeval faunas from Spain, Donbass, Urals, and Yukon Territory (Canada) and have a North-Palaeotethyan affinity. The Godar-e-Siah Complex of Jandaq likely represents part of the southern active margin of Eurasia (northern margin of the Palaeotethys), in contrast to the surrounding Central and North Iran blocks, which were at that time located along the southern margin of the Neotethys. Our investigations confirm a complex palaeogeographic evolution for the studied outcrops, suggesting that they represent fragments of the southern Eurasian active margin - today preserved in NE Iran - displaced by crustal-scale wrench motions related to the opening and closure of the Sabzear Ocean and to the Cenozoic activity of the Great Kavir-Doruneh Fault and its possible precursors.

The reconstruction of magma pathways at active volcanoes is of paramount importance for the comprehension of their structure and for geohazard assessment. Magma plumbing systems at volcanic arcs may be particularly complicated since the magma rises along fractures that can be consistent with the coeval regional state of stress, the local state of stress, or can form dykes that instead follow pre-existing structures. Magma path orientation can be stable over time or can vary as the consequence of external events like large earthquakes or important modifications in volcano morphology. In order to advance understanding of these issues, we reviewed all available information on the Holocene volcano-tectonics of the Alaska-Aleutian arc and back-arc zones, based on published seismological, interferometric and geological-structural data, geological maps, and official reports. We completed our review with some new measurements of Holocene eruptive fissures, faults, dykes, and morphometric characteristics of pyroclastic cones and volcanic domes aimed at better defining the possible shallow magma paths of the recent-active volcanoes. Finally, we reviewed the possible parameters and models that explain the path configurations. At 32 volcanoes, magma paths strike NW-SE, perpendicular or oblique to the arc but parallel to the regional greatest principal stress. At 20 volcanoes magma paths are parallel to the arc, and 19 volcanoes form rows of coalescent cones that also suggest ascent of magma parallel to the arc. Eight volcanoes display both directions (normal and parallel to the arc), and seismological data indicate that at some volcanoes there has been a rotation of the magma pathway over time. Integration of all data shows that the regional ambient tectonic stress field promotes dyke intrusions normal to the trench. Dykes can also intrude parallel to the trench following stress unclamping from large earthquakes. Trench-parallel dykes and rows of volcanoes can be generated by magma batches that are aligned parallel to the trend of the subduction zone. Once a dyke or a sill is intruded, it locally perturbs the stress field facilitating successive intrusion along a perpendicular direction.

The Enguri dam and water reservoir, nested in the southwestern Caucasus (Republic of Georgia), are surrounded by steep mountain slopes. At a distance of 2.5 km from the dam, a mountain ridge along the reservoir is affected by active deformations with a double vergence. The western slope, directly facing the reservoir, has deformations that affect a subaerial area of 1.2 km2. The head scarp affects the Jvari–Khaishi–Mestia main road with offsets of man-made features that indicate slip rates of 2–9 cm yr−1. Static, pseudostatic and Newmark analyses, based on field and seismological data, suggest different unstable rock volumes based on the environmental conditions. An important effect of variation of the water table is shown, as well as the possible destabilization of the slope following seismic shaking, compatible with the expected local peak ground acceleration. This worst-case scenario corresponds to an unstable volume on the order of up to 48±12×106 m3. The opposite, eastern slope of the same mountain ridge is also affected by wide deformation affecting an area of 0.37 km2. Here, field data indicate 2–5 cm yr−1 of slip rates. All this evidence is interpreted as resulting from two similar landslides, whose possible causes are discussed, comprising seismic triggering, mountain rapid uplift, river erosion and lake variations.

The Colima Volcanic Complex (CVC) is one of the most prominent volcanic edifices within the Tran-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB). Its evolution has been characterized by complex interactions among regional tectonics, basement geometry and rheology, and successive volcanic edifices formed in several stages. In the first part of this review chapter, the state-of-the-art in the CVC structural and geological knowledge is summarized and discussed. Such knowledge is based on published structural, geological, geophysical, geodetic and petrological data and models, which allow identification of three main fault systems and definition of the general geometrical properties of the volcano plumbing system. The significance and supporting evidence for the Colima Rift faults, Tamazula Fault and volcano spreading structures, as well as their interactions with the CVC, are presented. In the second part of the paper, numerical models are performed to integrate previous knowledge and test the effects of different structural scenarios and different mechanical assumptions on the onset of gravitational spreading of the volcanic complex. Also, the state of activity of the three fault systems and their control on the magmatism and flank instability are discussed. Finally, the main findings on the CVC structural arrangement are summarized, and the most important requirements for improvement of our understanding of the interaction between regional tectonics, volcanic edifices and basement rheology are suggested. Future investigations are critical, as eruptions and sector failures represent potential high risks for more than 500,000 people.

The boundary between the American and European plates emerges in Iceland, an outstanding natural laboratory where it is possible to analyse ongoing rifting processes. In the North Volcanic Zone, we studied with unprecedented detail an active rift, known as the Theistareykir Fissure Swarm (ThFS). We surveyed an area of 85 km2 with 694 measurement sites along 1537 post-Late Glacial Maximum extension fractures. In the southern sector of the study area, fractures strike N30–40° with opening directions about N120°. Fractures in the central sector strike about N00° and opening directions are N90–100°. In the northern sector, fractures strike about N30° with opening directions about N125°. Through a comparison with older faults cropping out in the substrate at the shoulder of the ThFS, we are able to suggest that variations in fracture strike are the effect of substrate structural inheritance as well as the possible interaction with the Tjornes Fracture Zone. With regard to kinematics, we highlight that most fractures show a small, but systematic, strike-slip component (a more frequent right-lateral component and a less common, left-lateral one). This cannot be explained as the result of fracture strike rotation relative to the regional, tectonic least principal stress. We conclude that the net opening directions can result from the combination of tectonic offsets and events caused by shallow magma chamber inflation and/or dyke intrusions. The latter can produce transcurrent components of displacement along new or already existing fractures.

In the present work, we applied the use of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) - a quadcopter - and the Aerial Structure from Motion digital photogrammetry image processing technique (ASfM) to study volcano-tectonics and tectonic features in an active Icelandic rift. Data have been collected in order to evaluate the Holocene deformation in the Northern Volcanic Zone of Iceland. We mapped 397 structures, mainly related to extension fractures and subordinately normal faults in the Theistareykir Fissure Swarm, obtaining 1098 and 21 structural data, respectively. This allowed to reconstruct an overall spreading direction of N108° during Holocene times, and to calculate a stretch of 1.013 regarding 8–10 ka old lava units. Deformation in the area is related to both dyke intrusions and extensional tectonics. Furthermore, detailed geological-structural field and UAV surveys were also performed in two test areas in order to determine data accuracy and the associated reliability of this approach. In addition to the above, different flight heights were tested, suggesting that photo collection with a 12.4 MPx camera at 100 m is efficient to study fracture dilation and kinematics.

Pseudotachylytes (solidified friction melts produced during seismic slip) are considered to be rare in the geological record because they should be typical of particular seismogenic environments characterized by water-deficient cohesive rocks. Here we present field and experimental evidence that frictional melting can occur in “fluid-rich” faults hosted in the continental crust.Pseudotachylytes were found in the >40 km long Bolfin Fault Zone of the Atacama Fault System (Northern Chile). The pseudotachylytes (1) are associated with a ~1 m thick ultracataclastic fault core which accommodated > 5 km of strike-slip displacement at 6-8 km depth and 280-350°C ambient temperature, (2) cut a ca. 50 m thick damage zone made of sub-greenschists facies hydrothermally altered diorites and gabbros, (3) cut and are cut by epidote+chlorite+calcite bearing veins. The microstructure of the pseudotachylytes include (1) tabular microlites of feldspar hosted in a glassy-like matrix and (2) vesicles filled by post-seismic sub-greenschist facies minerals hosted in a strongly altered matrix of albite, chlorite, and epidote crystals.Experiments reproducing seismic slip in the presence of pressurized water and conducted with the rotary shear apparatus SHIVA on experimental faults made of the sub-greenschists (hydrothermally altered) facies damage zone rocks from the Bolfin Fault Zone, resulted in the production of vesiculated pseudotachylytes. In these experiments, fault weakening mainly occurred by melt lubrication rather than by pore fluid thermal pressurization.The identification of pseudotachylytes and its association with intense pre- and post-seismic hydrothermal alteration challenges the common belief that pseudotachylytes are rare. Consistent with the experimental evidence, pseudotachylytes (1) could be a common coseismic fault product in the continental crust, (2) may easily be produced in fluid-rich hydrothermal environments but, (3) are easily lost from the geological record because they are prone to alteration.

The mechanisms of rift propagation are still not fully understood, especially at mid-oceanic ridges, owing to the inherent difficulty in collecting submarine data. Here, we investigate the fault slip profiles of the 60-km-long Theistareykir rift (northern Iceland) that may suggest the direction of along-axis rift propagation. This is one of the few places on Earth where rifting processes and mid-oceanic ridge formation can be studied directly. Moreover, this rift hosts an active central volcano, and this enables to fully understand the relations between rift propagation and magma systems. We reconstructed the slip profiles of all the 281 main Pleistocene-Holocene faults that compose this N-S rift, by merging measurements performed in the field, collected by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle surveys, and derived from Digital Surface Models. Results indicate that north of the volcano, 75% of the asymmetric faults propagated northward; the value increases to 82% if the cumulated fault length is considered. South of the volcano, 47% of the asymmetric faults propagated southward, 54% if the cumulated fault length is considered. These data point to a dominant mechanism of along-axis propagation of the rift outward from the volcano, suggesting a genetic link with the underlying magma chamber. Two possible processes are suggested, which can also occur in combination: i) faults develop following lateral dyke propagation outward from the magma chamber, and ii) faults nucleate near the volcano as a consequence of the different crustal rock rheology produced by a higher heat flux. The rift architecture is complicated by the presence of tectonic zones with different dominant fault dips, separated by transversal accommodation zones. The latter also play the role of barriers guiding local fault propagation.

The Lower-Middle Triassic Aghdarband Basin, NE Iran, consists of a strongly deformed arc-related marine succession deposited along the southern margin of Eurasia in a highly mobile tectonic context. This basin is a key-area for the study of the Cimmerian events, as the Triassic units show severe deformations, which occurred short time after the collision of Iran with Eurasia, and were sealed by the Middle Jurassic succession. In this work, we document the structural setting and evolution of this area, based on detailed mesoscopic structural analyses of faults and folds, paleostress reconstruction and revision of the Triassic stratigraphy. The Triassic sequences are deeply involved in a N-verging thrust stack interacting with an important left-lateral transpressional fault zone characterized by strike-slip faults, vertical folds and high angle reverse faults generating intricate positive flowers. Systematic folds asymmetry indicates that they developed in a left-lateral transpressional zone coeval to thrust imbrication to the south, due to a marked strain partitioning. The extent of the transpressional zone shows that important left-lateral movements developed parallel to the belt during the Cimmerian collision, in response to oblique convergence between Iran and Eurasia. Inversion of Triassic syn-sedimentary faults, possibly inherited from Palaeozoic structures of the Kopeh Dagh basement and favouring strain partitioning, is suggested by unconformities, significant differences in the sedimentary successions, repeated olistoliths, scarp-related coarse breccias and rapid tectonic drowning, occurring especially along the northern tectonic boundary of the basin. Paleostress analyses point to a complex stress pattern showing a 45° rotation of the stress field along the left-lateral fault system, related to a complete deformation partitioning in two domains respectively characterized by pure reverse dip-slip and strike-slip motions. The main direction of compression, possibly oriented NE–SW in present days coordinates, favoured the development of large shear zones disrupting the eastern portion of the Cimmerian orogen.

The Simplon Fault Zone is a late-collisional low-angle normal fault (LANF) of the Western Alps. The hanging wall shows evidence of brittle deformation only, while the footwall is characterized by a c. 1 km-thick shear zone (the Simplon Fault Zone), which continuously evolved, during exhumation and cooling, from amphibolite facies conditions to brittle-cataclastic deformations. Due to progressive localization of the active section of the shear zone, the thermal-rheological evolution of the footwall resulted in a layered structure, with higher temperature mylonites preserved at the periphery of the shear zone, and cataclasites occurring at the core (indicated as the Simplon Line). In order to investigate the weakness of the Simplon Line, we studied the evolution of brittle/cataclastic fault rocks, from nucleation to the most mature ones. Cataclasites are superposed on greenschist facies mylonites, and their nucleation can be studied at the periphery of the brittle fault zone. This is characterized by fractures, micro-faults and foliated ultracataclasite seams that develop along the mylonitic SCC' fabric, exploiting the weak phases mainly represented by muscovite and chlorite. Approaching the fault core, both the thickness and frequency of cataclasite horizons increase, and, as their thickness increases, they become less and less foliated. The fault core itself is represented by a thicker non-foliated cataclasite horizon. No Andersonian faults or fractures can be found in the footwall damage zone and core zone, whilst they are present in the hanging wall and in the footwall further from the fault. Applying a stress model based on slip tendency, we have been able to calculate that the friction coefficient of the Simplon Line cataclasites was

Our research is aimed at contributing to the general understanding of how transform-rift junctions work, a topic that can be studied in exceptional detail in North Iceland, where the active transform Husavik-Flatey Fault (HFF) connects with the Gudfinnugja Fault (GF), the westernmost structure of the Theistareykir Fissure Swarm (TFS). We studied in the field: i) offsets along the easternmost HFF, ii) the geometry and kinematics of 649 faults and 1208 tension fractures in the TFS, iii) the interactions among all these structures. The HFF transtensional kinematics is compatible with the GF, which shows different offsets north and south of the junction between these two faults. We suggest the possible prolongation of the HFF beyond the junction, based on: i) the change in offsets and strikes of TFS normal faults, ii) the presence of en-echelon, NNW-SSE-striking normal faults and tension fractures with a slight right-lateral component, iii) the transition of some of the faults into tension fractures north of the prolongation of the HFF, and iv) the decrease in the cumulated offset of all the faults north of the HFF prolongation. We interpret these data as field evidence of the first stages of propagation of the HFF upward or across the TFS: This has clear implications for defining the potential rupture length of the HFF and, hence, for seismic hazard assessment.

In the Monte Duria area (Adula-Cima Lunga unit, Central Alps, N Italy) garnet peridotites occur in direct contact with migmatised orthogneiss (Mt. Duria) and eclogites (Borgo). Both eclogites and ultramafic rocks share a common high pressure (HP) peak at 2.8 GPa and 750 °C and post-peak static equilibration at 0.8–1.0 GPa and 850 °C. Garnet peridotites show abundant amphibole, dolomite, phlogopite and orthopyroxene after olivine, suggesting that they experienced metasomatism by crust-derived agents enriched in SiO2, K2O, CO2 and H2O. Peridotites also display LREE fractionation (LaN/NdN = 2.4) related to LREE-rich amphibole and clinopyroxene grown in equilibrium with garnet, indicating that metasomatism occurred at HP conditions. At Borgo, retrogressed garnet peridotites show low strain domains characterised by garnet compositional layering, cut by a subsequent low-pressure (LP) chlorite foliation, in direct contact with migmatised eclogites. Kfs + Pl + Qz + Cpx interstitial pocket aggregates and Cpx + Kfs thin films around symplectites after omphacite parallel to the Zo + Omp + Grt foliation in the eclogites suggest that they underwent partial melting at HP. The contact between garnet peridotites and eclogites is marked by a tremolitite layer. The same rock also occurs as layers within the peridotite lens, showing a boudinage parallel to the garnet layering of peridotites, flowing in the boudin necks. This clearly indicates that the tremolitite boudins formed when peridotites were in the garnet stability field. Tremolitites also show Phl + Tc + Chl + Tr pseudomorphs after garnet, both crystallised in a static regime postdating the boudins formation, suggesting that they derive from a garnet-bearing precursor. Tremolitites have Mg# > 0.90 and Al2O3 = 2.75 wt% pointing to ultramafic compositions but also show enrichments in SiO2, CaO, and LREE suggesting that they formed after the reaction between the eclogite-derived melt and the garnet peridotite at HP. To test this hypothesis, we performed a thermodynamic modelling at fixed P = 3 GPa and T = 750 °C to model the chemical interaction between the garnet peridotite and the eclogite-derived melt. Our results show that this interaction produces an Opx + Cpx + Grt assemblage plus Amp + Phl, depending on the water activity in the melt, suggesting that tremolitites likely derive from a previous garnet websterite with amphibole and phlogopite. Both peridotites and tremolitites also show a selective enrichment in LILE recorded by amphiboles in the spinel stability field, indicating that a fluid-assisted metasomatic event occurred at LP conditions, leading to the formation of a chlorite foliation post-dating the garnet layering in peridotites, and the retrogression of Grt-websterites in tremolitites. The Monte Duria area is a unique terrane where we can observe syn-deformation eclogite-derived melt interacting with garnet peridotite at HP, proxy of subduction environments.

In the present work, we have obtained a detailed, complete view of surface deformation at a volcano-tectonic structure belonging to the Krafla Fissure Swarm (NE Iceland), through the integration of field mapping and the Aerial Structure from Motion technique (ASfM), as well as through orthomosaics and Digital Surface Models (DSMs). The documented, 2.5-km-long deformation zone is marked by a range of features, such as topographic bulging, parallel extension fractures, and narrow grabens affected by local floor uplift, which we have explained as the effect of the northward, shallow propagation of a dyke from the Krafla magma chamber. Our lithostratigraphic field survey of the area, at a 1: 5000 scale, indicates that major changes in the pattern of surface deformation take place across the contacts between deposits with different rheological properties. The transition from very stiff lavas to softer hyaloclastites produces changes from extensional fracturing to normal faulting, though the width of the deformation zone does not change. We have also documented a number of NE-SW, left-lateral and NNW-SSE, right-lateral strike-slip fault zones that are rotated in clockwise and anticlockwise sense to the main NNE-SSW graben trend, and extend outwards as much as about 17 m. The graben zone terminates to the north by splitting into two strike-slip fault zones. These were likely generated at the front of the dyke tip during its propagation, and were later on bypassed by the advancement of the dyke. As the dyke entered the soft hyaloclastites, propagation was slowed down and the dyke became thicker.
