Abstract

International audience; On-line, real-time chemical and mineralogical analyses on drill cores are highly demanded by mining companies. However, they are a challenge because of drill core surface state and sample heterogeneities. We selected four rock samples: highly porous, siliceous breccia and serpentinized harzburgite coming from the base of a nickel laterite profile in New Caledonia which were sonic drilled, and fine grained, homogeneous sandstone and coarse grained granite which were diamond drilled and provided by Eijkelkamp Sonic Drill with unknown origin. Abstract

Three different levels are recognised in the metamorphic pile of Syros and Sifnos. Well-preserved eclogites and blueschists occur at the top, whereas they are overprinted in the albite-epidote blueschist facies below, and in greenschist facies at the base. A multi-equilibrium approach involving several end members and solid-solution models for chlorite, phengite, and garnet is used to estimate the stability P-T conditions of different parageneses. The combination of textural criteria with the results of P-T calculations is consistent with the assumption of local equilibrium. Contrasted P-T conditions are inferred for successive parageneses coexisting out of equilibrium in the same samples. When considering all the P-T estimates together, contrasted P-T trends can be distinguished for the three different levels of the metamorphic pile. These trends are interpreted as the signature of the P-T paths followed by the rocks during their exhumation. The preservation of eclogitic parageneses at the top of the structural pile is correlated with cooling during decompression. In contrast, the progressive retrogression observed in the underlying rocks, toward the base of the metamorphic pile, is correlated with an increasing isothermal decompression before cooling.

Abstract

Miocene exhumation of metamorphic rocks in the Aegean Sea is partly a consequence of post-orogenic extension. If the post-orogenic mechanism of exhumation is rather well understood, the earlier syn-orogenic Eocene exhumation is still largely enigmatic. Previous authors have argued in terms of extension or compression. New structural and petrological data on Sifnos and Syros islands show that exhumation of high pressure–low temperature (HP–LT) rocks involves crustal-scale extensional ductile shear zones during the Eocene. We observe a continuum of top-to-the-NE and -E ductile shear from the Eocene (in the blueschist facies) to the Miocene (in the greenschist facies). This deformation is distributed in the eclogites and blueschists, whereas it is rather localised along ductile shear zones in the greenschists. Eclogites, which are preserved only at the top of the structural pile, are exhumed with a ‘cold’ retrograde P–T path. In the lower part of the structural pile we observe a progressive retrogression of eclogites in blueschist then greenschist facies. This lower part of pile is subsequently exhumed with P–T paths showing a nearly isothermal decompression before cooling. P–T–t-deformation data suggest that the Cycladic blueschists are progressively exhumed by a continuum of accretion at the base of the orogenic wedge, and by a partly non-coaxial extensional deformation above, distributed during the syn-orogenic stage, then localised during the post-orogenic stage. We then compare the mechanism of syn-orogenic exhumation of Crete and the Cyclades and we discuss a simple geodynamic scenario for the Aegean domain and the external Hellenides which accounts for (1) the southward migration of the Hellenic trench and arc during the Cenozoic; (2) the P–T–t-deformation data for the Cycladic blueschists and the Phyllite–quartzite nappe; and (3) the transition from syn-orogenic to post-orogenic in the Cyclades.

Abstract

International audience; Syn-orogenic detachments in accretionary wedges make the exhumation of high-pressure and low-temperature metamorphic rocks possible with little erosion. The velocity of exhumation within the subduction channel or the accretionary complex, and thus the shape of P-T paths, depend upon the kinematic boundary conditions. A component of slab retreat tends to open the channel and facilitates the exhumation. We document the effect of slab retreat on the shape of P-T paths using the example of the Phyllite-Quartzite Nappe that has been exhumed below the Cretan syn-orogenic detachment during the Miocene in Crete and the Peloponnese. Data show a clear tendency toward colder conditions at peak pressure and during exhumation where the intensity of slab retreat is larger. This spatial evolution of P-T gradient is accompanied with an evolution from a partly coaxial regime below the Peloponnese section of the detachment toward a clearly non-coaxial regime in Crete.

Abstract

A multiequilibrium thermobarometric approach was used to estimate the P-T conditions of successive metamorphic stages in carpholite-bearing blueschists that occur at the base of the Phyllite - Quartzite nappe of Peloponnese, in contact with the Ionian Plattenkalk. The calculated P-T conditions for successive metamorphic stages correlate well in samples from two different areas. A retrograde P-T path can be calculated, evolving from ~14 kbar, 400-450°C for chloritoid-bearing (carpholite-free) parageneses, to 11-13 kbar, 320-380°C for chloritoid + Mgcarpholite parageneses, ~7.5 kbar, 260-275°C for Mg-carpholite + sudoite parageneses, and ~3-4 kbar, ~250°C for parageneses involving only phyllosilicates. Thermobarometric calculations suggest that Mg-carpholite is a retrograde phase in the Peloponnese. This feature has never been observed elsewhere in high pressure-low temperature carpholite-bearing schists.
