The accumulation of heavy minerals along a part of the southeastern Brazilian coast (northern coast of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil) provides insight into sedimentary provenance and transport by longshore drift. In particular, recent work has focused on heavy minerals as tracers to determine sedimentary sources and transport pathways, indicating a mineral distribution according to the northward and southward coastal transport cells. There is also evidence of heavy-mineral transport by the Paraíba do Sul River. However, research has not been done in this area on the opaque fraction (iron oxides and oxyhydroxides), which are good tracers for provenance and distribution processes. Here we intend to: 1) characterize the spatial variation of the magnetic properties of heavy-mineral contents throughout a coastal area of the Itabapoana and Paraíba do Sul River mouths (state of Rio de Janeiro), 2) evaluate the contribution of coastal dynamics on the mineral distribution along this coastal area, 3) provide contributions on the provenance of iron-bearing minerals. Results indicate that a bimodal pattern was observed for the magnetic remanence of magnetite and hematite near the Paraíba do Sul River. For the northernmost section, goethite exhibits a gradual increase in concentration towards the central part of the study area. Additionally, higher heavy-mineral content is observed at the northern coastal section, which may be related to coastal morphology, which is exposed to high-energy beach processes. It is possible to verify three sampling groups in accordance with their magnetic properties: 1) the “southernmost” and 2) the “northernmost” groups, suggesting a mineral provenance related to the Paraíba do Sul and Itabapoana rivers, respectively, as possible major sources, and 3) another at the intermediate section of the area, possibly linked to the erosion of the Barreiras Formation bluffs. Results also show a correspondence between the variability of magnetic parameters and the main directions of the coastal transport cells.

Magnetic measurement was combined with geochemical analysis to investigate the trace metal pollution of atmospheric dustfall from rural areas of Inner Mongolia and urban regions of Hebei province in northern China. It is found that the type of magnetic mineral within atmospheric dustfall samples in Inner Mongolia is similar to those found in Hebei province, but the atmospheric dustfall samples in Inner Mongolia have lower magnetic mineral concentrations and finer particles. Linear multiple regression analyses show that the relationship between magnetic parameters and trace metals is found to vary between the contrasting rural and urban areas, and is controlled by the different source magnetic minerals. The concentration- and type-dependent magnetic properties of the particles correlated strongly with the concentrations of trace metals derived from natural processes, and the grain size-dependent magnetic parameters correlated negatively and significantly with the concentrations of trace metals derived from anthropogenic activities.

The Yellow River has shifted frequently in the downstream region since 1885; it has flowed into the sea through the Qingshuigou channel from 1976 onward, thus forming the latest delta lobe (1976–present). During the past ~40 years, the sediment load of the Yellow River has been greatly reduced because of human and natural activities, such as reservoir construction, soil and water conservation, and river avulsion. Beginning in 2002, the water-sediment regulation scheme (WSRS) has also changed the sediment loading patterns of the Yellow River. Several studies have reported on the erosion and deposition characteristics of the latest lobe of the Yellow River Delta over the past several decades, based on remote sensing methods and water-depth measurements. However, continuous sedimentary records of delta erosion and deposition and their responses to natural and human activities in the watershed are lacking. Here, we obtained three sediments cores, YD01, YD02, and YD03, from the subaqueous delta of the latest lobe of the Yellow River Delta. These cores contain sediments deposited from 1976 to 2018. We analyzed the environmental magnetism and lithological characteristics of these cores, and investigated their responses to natural and human activities in the watershed of the Yellow River, as well as possible applications to sediment dating in the Yellow River Delta. The results show that frequency-dependent susceptibility ( χ fd%) and anhysteretic remanent magnetization susceptibility ( χ ARM) values were high in core sediments deposited from 1976 to 1996, indicating abundant contents of fine single-domain (SD) and superparamagnetic (SP) magnetic particles, and therefore a dominant sediment supply from the Chinese Loess Plateau. Small decreases in χ fd% and χ ARM in sediments deposited after 1986 revealed slight reduction of the sediment load from the Yellow River, which was likely caused by sediment retention related to the construction of the Longyangxia Reservoir. Rapid rises in χ fd% and χ ARM occurred in core YD01 sediments deposited during 2002 and ~2007, likely in response to the implementation of the WSRS, which resulted in an increase in sediment transportation. Increases in hard isothermal remanent magnetization (HIRM) values, an indicator of high-coercivity magnetic minerals such as goethite and hematite, in cores YD02 and YD03 from 2002 to ~2007 may also represent the start of the WSRS. This is because the downstream riverbed of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir underwent intense erosion during the implementation of the WSRS, leading to large-scale transportation of coarse sediments enriched in goethite and hematite, which were deposited on the riverbed before the implementation of the WSRS. The lack of increased contents of fine SD and SP magnetic minerals in cores YD02 and YD03 compared with YD01 in the interval deposited between 2002 and ~2007 was attributed to erosion and redeposition in the areas around cores YD02 and YD03. Large drops in SD and SP contents after ~2007 were detected in all three cores, revealing intense erosion near the river mouth likely caused by river channel shift and reduced capability of the WSRS to remove sediments. Contents of SD and SP particles increased again in sediments deposited after 2014 in cores YD02 and YD03, likely related to erosion of the present (after 1996) Yellow River mouth and transportation of fine particles to the region near cores YD02 and YD03. In summary, the magnetic parameters χ fd% and χ ARM and the lithological characteristics of cores YD01, YD02, and YD03 recorded sediment delivery changes caused by four events in the Yellow River watershed: The main river channel shift in 1976, construction of the Longyangxia Reservoir in 1986, the beginning of the WSRS in 2002, and weakened capability of the WSRS to remove sediments after ~2007. The notable changes of χ fd%, χ ARM, and lithology at the 1976, 1986, 2002, and ~2007 horizons may be used as dating points in future research of sediment cores from the Yellow River Mouth.

We conducted the first detailed mineral magnetic investigation of more than nine loess–paleosol couplets of the composite Titel-Stari Slankamen loess section in Serbia, which provides one of the longest and most complete terrestrial record of paleoclimatic changes in Europe since ~1.0 Ma. The results show that the ferrimagnetic mineral assemblage of the loess units is dominated by partially oxidized multidomain (MD) and pseudo-single domain (PSD) magnetite; however, with an increasing degree of pedogenesis, the eolian contribution is gradually masked by pedogenic superparamagnetic(SP) and single-domain (SD) ferrimagnets (mainly maghemite). The overall consistency of ferrimagnetic grain-size parameters indicates an absence of dissolution of the fine-grained ferrimagnetic fraction despite changes in climate regime over the past 1.0 Ma. The variations of normalized dJ/dT@120Kand normalized χheating@530°Creflect a long-term stepwise increase in aridity during glacials with a major step at ~0.6–0.5 Ma, over the last 1.0 Ma. Overall, the results provide an improved basis for the future use of the magnetic properties of Serbian loess deposits for paleoclimatic reconstruction.

Magnetic susceptibility (MS) is widely used for paleoclimate reconstruction. In one of the previous studies, data from 12 locations of modern middle- and low-latitude soils revealed that MS increases with increasing precipitation from approximately 200 to 1000–1200 mm yr−1 and then decreases with further precipitation. However, as a result of diverse sediment sources from different locations, the MS value can deviate, affecting its relationship with the climate. Sediments of a section experience dry-wet contrast due to the migration of climate zones as a function of geological time, and form different soil types with various colors. If the sediments of a section have the same source material, different soil types in that section would enable us to explore the relationship between MS enhancement and precipitation using paleosols and to verify the previous results. Herein, we investigated Cretaceous variegated sediments in the Zhonggou and Xiagou Formations located in the Hexi Corridor of China. The rare earth and trace element analyses reveal that these sediments have the same source area. Environmental magnetism and geochemical methods reveal that the sedimentary environment of the yellowish-brown, red, and grayish-white sediments ranges from dry to wet. Precipitation reconstruction for the paleosols with a climate transfer function shows that MS increases with increasing precipitation up to approximately 800 ± 182 mm yr−1 and decreases with higher precipitation amounts. The changing pattern of MS is consistent with the previous results, but the inflection point in the MS vs. precipitation curve appears at slightly lower precipitation value. Thus, paleosol sequences are suited for the analysis of paleoprecipitation trends with the help of MS.

Hematite concentration is an important climatic proxy for environmental (climatic) studies of soils and sediments. However, the accurate quantification of naturally occurring hematite has always been a difficult question, especially for those areas with lower hematite concentrations. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) is an effective method for hematite identification and quantification with lower detection limits. In this study, we synthesized a set of samples with well-determined concentrations to explore the exact detectable range of hematite and propose the most effective transfer function between the DRS proxy and hematite concentration. In addition, natural sediments from Inland Asia and the Western Pacific Ocean were used to further test the feasibility of the new transfer function. Results show that the lowest DRS detection limit for hematite could reach ~0.00078%, but is affected by the natural matrix. We also find that the second derivative of the Kubelka–Munk (K–M) function is monotonically correlated with the hematite concentration (0.00078%–100%), but ambiguities exist for the first derivative. Therefore, the second derivative of the K–M function is highly suggested for the hematite quantification, especially when concentration exhibits a wide range of variations. This study provides important references for the application of hematite proxy and promotes the popularization and development of the DRS method.

We report new rock magnetic results from a cave in the “Sierra de Atapuerca” (Burgos, North of Spain), that is one of the most important archaeological and palaeontological sites of Lower to Middle Pleistocene in Europe. Our samples are taken in cave sediments of Gran Dolina Cave. Rock magnetic analyses allowed us to determine changes in grain size, composition, and concentration in both cave-entrance and cave-interior sediments. Generally, the cave-entrance sediments are characterized by a high concentration of magnetic minerals while the cave-interior presents a more variable concentration. Because rock magnetic properties, in particular the iron oxides, are affected by environmental factors (such as the intensity of physical and chemical weathering) they offer an important reconstruction proxy for better understanding the paleoenvironmental conditions at the time the earliest hominins began to migrate into Europe. No matter how quiet and pristine a cave setting may appear, all speleothems contain assemblages of magnetic minerals. These iron oxide minerals are derived largely from overlying soils, though minor fractions may come from the residuum of dissolved bedrock, reworked sediment carried by episodic floods, geomicrobiological activity, and even windblown dust. Regardless of their origin, these minerals become aligned with Earth’s ambient magnetic field before they are fixed within a speleothem’s growing carbonate matrix. Here, we describe how the magnetism of stalagmites and flowstone can be used to chronicle high-resolution geomagnetic behavior and environmental change.

In the Mesoamerican region, arid or hydrological variable conditions are commonly interpreted from 4 ka onwards. It is not well known how these changes modified the Mesoamerican monsoon system, which were the main atmospheric-oceanic forcings involved and their effect in the Pre-Classic Mesoamerican societies' history. Here, we study the possible link between paleoclimatic changes and decreased social development of societies in Mesoamerica during the Pre-Classic period (4.3 ka to 2.2 ka), which correspond to the Middle-Late Holocene transition. We also describe the principal oceanic-atmospheric mechanism related. We employed a partly laminated sediment sequence from La Alberca maar lake in the central Mexico highlands by means of environmental magnetism and comparing versus X-ray fluorescence (XRF), pollen, and δ18O analyses. Increased concentrations and preservation of ferrimagnetic minerals and enhanced detrital load as described by the XRF Ti counts reveal the occurrence of variable hydrological conditions between ~4.4 ka to 2.2 ka. These conditions coincide with the onset of high-frequency latitudinal variations of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the rise of ENSO and Pacific decadal oscillation activity. We suggest that variable hydrological conditions affected the development of Mesoamerican agrarian societies stressing agricultural production during the Pre-Classic period.

International audience; Magnetic properties are sensitive paleoenvironmental proxies frequently used in studies of loess paleosol profiles. Understanding precisely the magnetic recording of soil responses to environmental and climatic changes needs combining pedologic data and geophysical proxies. Here we present a new high-resolution study of a 450 ka old loess-paleosol profile from low Danube loess area at Kaolinovo (NE Bulgaria). The profile consists of Holocene soil S0 on top, three paleosol units (S1, S2, S3-S4) and the intercalated loess horizons L1 to L4. Mineral magnetic and rock magnetic data together with pedological parameters (particle size distribution, total, crystalline and amorphous iron, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, cation exchange capacity, carbonate content) show systematic variations in response to environmental changes. Principal component analyses carried out separately on magnetic mineralogy, rock magnetic and pedological variables reveal the complex response of loess - paleosol sediments to changes in source material and climate. The observed sharp shift in coercivity of mineral magnetic carriers at depth of the third loess L3 marks the change from low-coercivity mineral assemblages in older units to higher coercivity in the last three loess paleosol couplets (L1-S0, L2-S1, L3 - S2). This boundary is related to both dust source change and increased climate aridity. The observed spikes in concentration-dependent magnetic parameters in the lowermost part of the profile and particular magnetic and pedologic signature of the oldest deposits (S3-S4 pedocomplex) suggest that it may result from tephra additions in the studied loess-paleosol sequence, tentatively correlated to cryptotephra layers in other terrestrial archives in the region like Tenaghi Philippon and lake Ohrid sedimentary sequences. This work demonstrated that using PCA tool for studying the significance and objective inter-relationships of multiple mineralogical, mineral magnetic and pedological characteristics along depth of loess - paleosol profiles is an exemplary approach for revealing the underlying sedimentary and environmental processes.

Holocene history of the Indian monsoon reconstruction using environmental magnetism has emerged as an effective paleoclimate proxy with its fast, efficient, and repeatable measuring procedures. In this chapter, we have made an attempt to provide a broad synthesis of the available sediment magnetic records obtained from the loess-paleosols (central Himalaya), lake (western India), delta and lagoon sequences (eastern coast Godavari and Iskapalli). Variations in magnetomineralogical S-ratio values of sediment archives were combined and stacked as a surrogate for Holocene paleomonsoon change. High S-ratio results from low weathering rates were attributed to more wet conditions, while low S-ratios were related to dry conditions from intense low temperature oxidation. Combining the S-ratio data from diverse environments collectively revealed three broad climate phases with minor oscillations during the past 20 ka. These are (i) a step-wise intensification of the SW monsoon since the Last Glacial Maximum with its peak level at ∼9.0 ka, (ii) the prevalence of a prolonged dry spell along the eastern coast and western India at ∼3.5 ka that led to the collapse of the Harappan civilization, and (iii) reduction of monsoon rainfall during the period of global cooling events such as Last Glacial Maximum, Younger Dryas, and Little Ice Age. We observed that instead of the concentration-specific magnetic susceptibility (χ), the combined remanence S-ratio seems to be a more sensitive proxy responding to the monsoon variability both at centennial and millennial time scales.

International audience; The purpose of this study is to better understand the system of Quaternary loess-palaeosol sequences (LPS) of the Matmata region in southern Tunisia. Results from a combination of predominantly classical methods (grain size and mineral analysis, CaCO3- content estimation, environmental magnetism) indicate strong soil formation phases during which the conditions of sedimentation changed drastically. The heavy mineral analysis underlines northwest, west and southwest provenances of the loessic material. Furthermore, we discuss the process of soil formation in LPS and explain why these soils are very sandy in comparison to the loess units. During phases of soil formation, the northwestern sediment transport path was blocked while sandy material was blown dominantly from the southwestern Grand Erg. Therefore, we present a conceptual model including a provenance analysis of the loessic material that support and improve earlier results of Coudé-Gaussen and collaborators.; Dans cette étude, nous présentons un modèle conceptuel pour une meilleure compréhension du système de séquences de loess paléosol (LPS) dans la région de Matmata située dans le sud de la Tunisie. Les résultats d'une combinaison de méthodes principalement classiques (analyse granulométrique, analyse minéralogique, détermination de la teneur en CaCO3, magnétisme environnemental) indiquent des phases de formation importante de sols au cours desquelles les conditions de sédimentation ont fondamentalement changé. L'analyse des minéraux lourds met en évidence une origine nord-ouest, ouest et sud-ouest du matériel loessique. En outre, nous discutons la nature de la formation des sols et expliquons pourquoi ces sols sont si sableux par rapport aux unités de loess. Pendant les phases de formation des sols, le trajet des sédiments en provenance du nord-ouest a été bloqué alors que les matériaux sableux pouvaient encore être soufflés à partir du Grand Erg au sud-ouest. Notre modèle conceptuel de la provenance du lœss à Matmata soutient et précise les conclusions de Coudé-Gaussen et collaborateurs.

Shukla et al. explored paleoclimatic signals from a ~8 m thick profile of a moraine-dammed lake in the central Himalaya exposed due to lake burst from a flash flood in 2013. The main objective of their research work is to understand the complex glacial-climate system during late-Holocene. They attempted a novel multi proxy approach for paleoclimate reconstruction but their work suffers from misinterpretation of various proxies and erroneous/misleading discussion. We therefore report following major points in this comment article. (1) Misinterpretation of magnetic parameters: Magnetic susceptibility (χlf) has been used to interpret changes in magnetic mineralogy rather than concentration of magnetic minerals. Susceptibility of anhysteretic remanence (χARM) has been used at several places to indicate presence of superparamagnetic (SP) and multi domain (MD) ferrimagnetic particles rather than single domain (SD) ferrimagnetic (magnetite) particles. Interpreting erroneous negative values of percentage of frequency dependent susceptibility (χfd%) for climate change. (2) Poor chronology: Overlaps in ages of glacial-lake sediments. (3) References: Several statements in paper have not been referenced and some of them have out of place citations. (4) Carefree writing: Authors have shown typical example of carefree writing of a research article, for example, giving units to dimensionless parameter S-ratio, and χfd%, differences in units of χlf in text and figure, different depths for the same age in text and figure. (5) Over interpretation: Authors at places have interpreted climatic variations based on only one sample. (6) Poor justifications: Authors did not provide any detailed justification for proxy data while interpreting climatic variations. (7) No data (results) on mineralogy and trace elements were given. Overall it is not only a problem of presentation and misinterpretation of proxy data but the study also fails to deliver the final message of climate change and glacier dynamics in the central Himalaya.

SUMMARY The loess from the northern piedmont of the Dabie Mountains is in a transition area between loess from the Chinese Loess Plateau, the Quaternary red soils of southern China and the Xiashu loess. Despite its significant location, the study has been inadequate. In this study, the Guangshan section in the northern piedmont of the Dabie Mountains was selected for investigation. Environmental magnetism, geochemistry, colour reflectance and optical diffuse reflection spectroscopy analyses were applied to detect the magnetic variations in the loess. The results showed that (1) the magnetic minerals consisted mainly of magnetite, maghemite, hematite and goethite, which are the same as those in the Quaternary loess from the Chinese Loess Plateau, the Xiashu loess and the Quaternary red soils of southern China. The average magnetic particles were in the pseudo-single domain, like those of the Chinese Loess Plateau loess. (2) Unit III of the Guangshan section (2.4–4 m), with high chemical index of alteration and low Ba-index, was demonstrated as the most strongly developed palaeosol in the whole section, in agreement with field observations (more Fe-Mn films and weakly vermiculated development). However, it exhibited minimal susceptibility values and the lowest concentration of fine ferrimagnetic minerals. Simultaneously, the unit had low hematite to goethite ratio (Hm/Gt), suggesting that the pedogenic environment was humid; and it also had high values of b* and Gt%, implying that there was more goethite. Therefore, we can conclude that excessive soil moisture and intensive pedogenesis dissolved the fine ferrimagnetic minerals originally produced by pedogenesis and transformed them into goethite. These results could help to trace the palaeoclimatic evolution of the study area and clarify the magnetic variations of loess in different climates throughout China.

Production, transport and deposition of aeolian dust from land to sea closely interact with regional environment and global climate. This Special Issue addresses transport of aeolian dust from the Asian inland to the Loess Plateau and North Pacific Ocean and their possible links to oceanic ecosystem, global climate and even human activity, over various timescales. The papers in this volume are multidisciplinary in nature and include sedimentology, mineralogy, geochemistry, environmental magnetism and climate modelling on multi-timescales from interannual, glacial–interglacial to tectonic timescales. Based on modern observation, geological records and modelling, this Special Issue offers new insights especially into aeolian provenance, dynamics controls on dust production, a novel marine aeolian proxy, as well as long-term aeolian input to the marginal basins of NE Asia and its influence on oceanic productivity. This issue provides a good example for future comprehensive studies of source-to-sink processes of Asian dust from land to sea.

SUMMARY Environmental magnetism has become more and more popular because it is inexpensive, rapid and non-destructive. However, the environmental implication of traditional magnetic parameters is changed as the weathering intensity is contrasting. For example, magnetic susceptibility cannot be used as pedogenic index for strongly weathered red soils. Thermal magnetic measurement is a common way to identify magnetic minerals in rocks and sediments. Susceptibility enhancement after a 700 °C heating cycle in an argon atmosphere usually happened for various rocks and sediments. The increase is caused by formation of new magnetite from iron derived from paramagnetic iron-containing minerals. This is similar to pedogenesis or weathering process. The heating process in lab released the residual iron in weatherable iron-containing silicates which has not yet been depleted by contemporary pedogenesis or weathering. This residual iron can be quantified by the amount of susceptibility increase after a heating cycle. A negative correlation between the susceptibility increase after heating and the weathering intensity has been found in high-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of several sequences located in different climate zones. Results suggest that the degree of weathering can be estimated for intensely weathered red soils as well as for scarcely weathered loess using the amount of susceptibility change after a 700 °C heating cycle. This study provides new perspectives for developing new weathering and pedoclimate proxies using environmental magnetism.

Thick sediments from foreland basins usually provide valuable information for understanding the relationships between mountain building, rock denudation, and sediment deposition. In this paper, we report environmental magnetic measurements performed on the Miocene sediments in the Subei Basin, northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Our results show two different patterns. First, the bulk susceptibility and SIRM, ARM, and HIRM mainly reflect the absolute-concentration of magnetic minerals; all have increased remarkably since 13.7 Ma, related to provenance change rather than climate change. Second, the ratios of IRM100mT/SIRM, IRM100mT/IRM30mT, and IRM100mT/IRM60mT, together with the redness and S ratio, reflect the relative-concentration of hematite, being climate-dependent. Their vertical changes correlate in general with the long-term Miocene climatic records of marine oxygen isotope variations, marked by the existence of higher ratios between 17 and 14 Ma. This may imply that global climate change, rather than uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, played a dominant role in the long-term climatic evolution of the Subei area from the early to middle Miocene.

A chronologically well-constrained sedimentary archive from Upshi (Ladakh) was studied using a multi-proxy approach namely palynology, environmental magnetism, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen providing a continuous vegetation, and paleoenvironmental history spanning the last ~2700 years with a temporal resolution of ~43 years. Pollen assemblage shows non-arboreal pollen (NAP) and non-pollen palynomorph (NPP) were dominant around the Upshi from ~2646 to 2431 cal. yr BP, indicating warmer conditions. Arboreal pollen (AP) and NAP gradually increased from 2431 to 1860 cal. yr BP in the study area, under warm and wet conditions, corresponding to the Roman Warm Period (RWP). This phase also witnessed enhanced sediment δ15N and χlf values. From ~1860 to ~1154 cal. yr BP increased Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae and substantial spread of NPP suggest decreased temperature and prevalence of cold-dry climate. This period also records declining trends of χlf, δ15N, δ13Corg, TOC, and TN contents. From ~1154 to 293 cal. yr BP, the vegetation type reversed to mixed conifer and broad-leaved forest with significant increase in herbaceous taxa, rising δ15N, δ13Corg, TOC, and TN suggesting warm and wet conditions in the study area. This period broadly corresponds to the ‘Medieval Warm Period’ (MWP). Among all the proxies employed, depth profiles of TOC and TN (wt%) appear to respond best against external climate forcing showing remarkable correlation(s) with residual Δ14C in atmosphere, indicating dominance of intrinsic solar variability on regional climate/environment. The reconstructed recorded is well connected with established historical events and cultural activities of the Eurasian region.

金沢大学理工研究域地球社会基盤学系, Single-domain magnetite particles exhibit minimum susceptibility along their elongation, resulting in so-called inverse fabric of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS). We report the discovery of inverse AMS fabrics from pelagic clay recovered by a ∼12m long piston core from the western North Pacific. A previous study identified fossil single-domain magnetite produced by magnetotactic bacteria (magnetofossils) as the dominant ferrimagnetic mineral in the sediment. The inverse AMS fabrics were found in a ∼2m zone. The ∼6 and ∼4m of sediment above and below this zone showed normal, horizontal AMS fabrics. Rock magnetic data and ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy indicated that magnetofossils account for most of the mean susceptibility regardless of normal or inverse AMS. This was explained by the mixing models where the inverse fabric from magnetofossils is nearly balanced by the normal fabrics of terrigenous minerals. The corrected degree of AMS carried by magnetofossils in the sediment was estimated to be ∼1.01, which is comparable to that of typical pelagic sediment at shallow depth. On the other hand, terrigenous minerals in the sediment were estimated to have higher degree of anisotropy, possibly reflecting burial and subsequent erosion of >80m of sediment, which was also suggested by a subbottom acoustic stratigraphy. Summary Magnetic minerals form or alter in the presence of hydrocarbons, making them a potential magnetic proxy for identifying hydrocarbon migration pathways. In this paper we test this idea by magnetically measuring core samples from the Tay Fan in the Western Central Graben in the Central North Sea. In a companion paper, 3D petroleum systems modelling has been carried out to forward model migration pathways within the Tay Fan. Rock magnetic experiments identified a range of magnetite, maghemite, iron sulphides, siderite, goethite and titanohematite, some of which are part of the background signal, and some due to the presence of hydrocarbons. Typical concentrations of the magnetic minerals were ∼10–200 ppm. Importantly, we have identified an increasing presence of authigenic iron sulphides (likely pyrite and greigite) along the identified lateral hydrocarbon migration pathway (east to west). This is likely caused by biodegradation resulting in the precipitation of iron sulphides, however, though less likely, it could alternatively be caused by mature oil generation, which subsequently travelled with the migrating oil to the traps in the west. These observations suggest mineral magnetic techniques could be a rapid alternative method for identifying the severity of biodegradation or oil maturity in core sample, which can then be used to calibrate petroleum systems models.

The type-section of the Blackwater Draw Formation (BDF) consists of a series of five paleosol horizons developed on eolian deposits and an overlying surficial soil. Previous work has shown that magnetic properties (e.g., χ, ARM, and IRM) as a function of depth in this type-section, display both magnetically enhanced and magnetically depleted signals for different paleosols. To better understand the magnetic mineralogy responsible for these varying responses, various rock-magnetic experiments, scanning electron microscopy, and Mössbauer spectroscopy were conducted on representative samples from the six soil units which constitute the BDF type-section. Our results show that sub-micron hematite [with a minor contribution from single-domain sized hematite (Hc = ∼500 mT) dominates all the soils in terms of weight percent concentration. Whereas, low coercivity (Hc = ∼35 mT or less) magnetite/maghemitized-magnetite grains, largely in the PSD state (Mr/Ms=∼0.14 +/– 0.03588, Hcr/Hc=∼2.68 +/– 0.298789), dominate the magnetic signal. Magnetically depleted soils show a relatively higher proportion of goethite, while magnetically enhanced soils show an increased contribution from SP/SSD magnetite/maghemite phases.By combining our data-set with geochemically-derived climofunctions, we have correlated the magnetically preserved, depleted, and enhanced sections of the type-section to three distinct environmental phases (I-III). The basal sediments of Phase I displays relatively homogenous (neither enhanced nor depleted) magnetic properties due to relatively arid conditions and minimal alteration of southerly derive eolian sands. Conversely, Phase II-III represents a change in weathering intensities and provenance, resulting in a mix of southerly derived sands and northerly derived silts. Phase II, experienced greater precipitation levels, resulting in the dissolution of Fe-oxide phases and thus magnetic depletion. The uppermost Phase III experienced intermediate precipitation intensities resulting in magnetic enhancement.Using previously published age models we tentatively interpret these changing environmental conditions to be influenced by the Middle-Pleistocene Transition (1.2-0.7 Ma), where the Earth’s climatic cycles shifted from a ∼41 kyr to ∼100 kyr cycles. However, ambiguities persist due to uncertainties in the currently published age model. Due to the complexity of the magnetic signal, we recommend future studies utilize a holistic approach, incorporating rock-magnetic, geochemical, and microscopy observations for more accurate reconstruction of regional paleoenvironments.

International audience; In mid-latitude Eurasia, loess-paleosol sequences (LPS) provide the most widespread sedimentary records of Quaternary paleoenvironmental evolution. In the Middle Danube Basin (MDB), these archives cover at least the last million years of climate history, and occasionally contain archeological findings. The studied Zemun LPS is located on the right bank of the Danube in Northern Serbia. The site was declared as a protected site, based on Paleolithic artifacts found on the riverbank and stemming from unknown stratigraphic levels of the loess cliffs exposed along the Danube. The present study aims to provide a stratigraphic, paleoenvironmental, and temporal context for the Zemun LPS by means of environmental magnetic and colorimetric methods. Our investigations result in a chronostratigraphic scheme allowing direct comparison with other well-established reference records in the MDB and elsewhere. Two potential tephra layers tentatively assigned to the so-called L2 and Bag tephras, which are both widespread in the MDB and beyond were investigated for their bulk magnetic properties. The resulting integrated age model suggests that the Zemun LPS records a detailed history of a quasi-continuous accumulation of mineral dust from Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 11–5a (c. 430–60 ka). The outcome of our integrative approach indicates a continuous aridification over the last four interglacial/glacial cycles and we discuss potential changes in seasonality over time.

We describe here a multiproxy dataset (grain size, environmental magnetism, stable carbon isotope, total nitrogen, and total organic carbon) generated on a ~116 cm long trench profile from the high altitude alpine Badnikund lake in the Central Himalaya. The dataset also includes environmental magnetic and organic geochemistry data on catchment soils of the Bednikund lake. The presented data is related to the research article “Middle Holocene Indian summer monsoon variability and its impact on cultural changes in the Indian subcontinent” [1] . The chronology of the Bednikund lake trench (BBK) profile is well established with seven AMS 14C dates. The multiproxy data is provided in tabular format in an excel file along with ages in Mendeley Data Repository. The multiproxy data can be significantly utilized for regional correlation of Indian summer monsoon (ISM) variability during the middle Holocene as well as for correlation of global climatic events. The data can also be reutilized in paleoclimate modelling for precipitation change over the past ~6000 years.

Fe-bearing minerals are a tiny fraction of the composition of speleothems. They have their origin in the karst system or are transported from the drainage basin into the cave. Recent studies on the magnetism of speleothems focused on the variations of their magnetic mineralogy in specific time intervals and are usually limited to a single sample. In this study, we describe a database of environmental magnetism parameters built from 22 stalagmites from different caves located in Brazil (South America) at different latitudes, comprising different climates and biomes. The magnetic signal observed in these stalagmites is dominated by low-coercivity minerals (∼20 mT) whose magnetic properties resemble those of the magnetite formed in pedogenic environments. Also, a comparison with few samples from soils and the carbonate from cave’s walls shows a good agreement of the magnetic properties of speleothems with those of soil samples, reinforcing previous suggestions that in (sub-)tropical regimes, the dominant magnetic phase in speleothems is associated with the soil above the cave. Spearman’s rank correlation points to a positive strong correlation between magnetic concentration parameters (mass-normalized magnetic susceptibility, natural remanent magnetization, anhysteretic remanent magnetization, and isothermal remanent magnetization). This implies that ultrafine ferrimagnetic minerals are the dominant phase in these (sub-)tropical karst systems, which extend across a diverse range of biomes. Although the samples are concentrated in the savannah biome (Cerrado) (∼70%), comparison with other biomes shows a higher concentration of magnetic minerals in speleothem underlying savannahs and lower concentration in those underlying moist broadleaf forests (Atlantic and Amazon biome) and dry forests (Caatinga). Thus, rainfall, biome, and epikarst dynamics play an important role in the concentration of magnetic minerals in speleothems in (sub-)tropical sites and indicate they can be an important target for paleoenvironmental research in cave systems.

La cuenca del río Suquía (superficie ~6.300 km2) es un sistema hidrológico de mediana extensión, ubicado en la provincia de Córdoba, en la región central de Argentina. El río Suquía nace aguas abajo del lago San Roque, discurre por sectores serranos, atraviesa una ciudad densamente poblada (Córdoba Capital 1,5 millones de habitantes) y continua su curso por la llanura chaco-pampeana donde se desarrollan actividades agrícola-ganaderas. Debido a diversas actividades urbanas e industriales, el río recibe a lo largo de su curso aportes contaminantes, los cuales se depositan aguas abajo en el lecho del mismo. Los resultados geoquímicos y magnéticos sobre los sedimentos de fondo (esto es, los sedimentos depositados en el lecho principal del río) permitieron evaluar el grado de contaminación de este sistema natural con alteración antrópica. Se extrajeron muestras de sedimento de fondo del cauce del río y se separaron distintas fracciones granulométricas para determinaciones magnéticas. International audience; Between 22 and 17 cal ka BP, five large meltwater events from within the Laurentian Channel Ice Stream deposited mud beds meters thick across a large area of the Laurentian Fan and adjacent continental slopes. This study determines the sources of these event beds and relates them to the glaciological evolution of the retreating Laurentian Ice Stream. We analyzed major element and magnetic mineral contents of these event beds and compare them with a new collection of 80 source reference samples from the Gulf of St. Lawrence area. Element ratios suggest a steady compositional change from older to younger outburst event beds, while element-specific offsets from reference sample compositions indicate grain-size and mineral/element partitioning during suspension transport. Their magnetic properties place event beds on the source mixing trend of four reference samples groups, which represent two magnetite-rich sources (Canadian Shield and/or Southern Newfoundland) and two hematite-rich sources (Appalachian red beds). Using a deterministic linear source mixing model based on IRM 100mT , HIRM and Ca%, we find that the earlier two outburst events had higher contributions from granitic and calcareous sources than the later three events. Combining materials, timing and scenarios of the outburst events with ice-sheet retreat and ice-stream dynamics, we argue that the subglacial sediment depocenter of the earlier two event beds was located in the lower Laurentian Channel while that of the later three events was upstream from Cabot Strait.

A 95-cm subalpine peat core from the Daping Swamp, located in the transition zone between the middle and southern subtropical regions of China, provides an environmental mineral magnetism record over the past ~ 3000 years. Magnetic concentration-dependent parameters [i.e. magnetic susceptibility (χlf), anhysteretic susceptibility (χARM), and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM)] and grain size-dependent parameters [i.e. percentage frequency-dependent susceptibility (χfd%), SIRM/χlf, and χARM/χlf] of core and catchment sediments were measured to characterize provenance and catchment processes. Multi-magnetic parameters revealed that the primary magnetic minerals in the peat samples were mainly detrital magnetic minerals, which originated from catchment surface soil erosion. Changes in vegetation coverage as well as pedogenesis induced by rainfall variation play an important role in controlling the input of magnetic materials. Therefore, we infer that variations of magnetic features in the core bear potential to elucidate the history of environmental changes in the past ~ 3000 years, which are closely related to Asian summer monsoon evolution. Multiple parameters revealed that in three periods (i.e. 2700–2500, 1600–1000, and 500–300 cal year BP), decreased pedogenesis intensity and increased erosion induced by decline in vegetation coverage under dry conditions led to increased input of magnetic minerals, especially the coarser minerals in peat samples. However, in the two periods (i.e. 2500–1600, and 1000–500 cal year BP), multi-magnetic proxies indicate increased pedogenesis and decreased input of magnetic minerals dominated by fine-grained magnetic minerals caused by increased vegetation coverage under relatively wet and warm conditions. These climatic periods are of broad regional consistence across the world. The general trend of the late Holocene climate revealed by magnetic parameters confirms the sensitivity of environmental magnetism in this peat succession from the subalpine western Nanling Mountains to the climatic/environmental variability in the Asian summer monsoon region.

The results of studies of the regularities of evolution of soils and the environment in the steppe zone of the East European Plain are presented. Different culture-based chronological stages of the Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Middle Ages (3rd millennium BC–2nd millennium AD) are considered on the basis of buried soils at archeological monuments (burial mounds).

Following the line of approach enumerated in the tsunami toolkit of Chague-Goff et al. (2011), ‘Expanding the proxy toolkit to help identify past events - Lessons from the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and the 2009 South Pacific Tsunami, Earth Sci. Rev. 107 (1–2), 107–122’, measurements of elemental and mineral magnetic properties coupled with textural parameters have been used to evaluate the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami (IOT) induced sediments on the Muttukadu backwaters, East Coast of India. To investigate the sediment provenance, specific Fe, Mn and Pb elemental concentrations were measured in surface sediments and compared with the previously published pre-tsunami database of backwater/inner continental shelf sediments. We found the enrichment of Fe and Pb, against depletion of Mn concentration in present tsunami sediments as compared with pre-tsunami Muttukadu sediments, reflecting the variation of the sediment source area. However, the present data of Fe and Pb enrichment and Mn depletion correlates well with continental shelf sediments hinting at sedimentary routes, processes of erosion and wave propagation. The studied tsunami deposits are characterized by dominant ∼40–85% coarse sand fractions and higher proportion of detrital low and high coercivity Fe-Ti oxides, such as magnetite, titanomagnetite and hematite, reflected by magnetic concentration (magnetic susceptibility (χ), anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM)) and coercivity-dependent parameters (soft isothermal remanent magnetization (Soft IRM), Hard IRM, magnetomineralogical S-Ratio and saturation IRM (SIRM)). So, it can be shown that the random spatial variability and the inverse relationship between magnetic concentration χ, ARM and SIRM parameters and grain-size ARM/χ, SIRM/χ and ARM/SIRM ratios as diagnostic criteria for the tsunami impacted the distribution of magnetic parameters in coastal backwater environments. Contrasting mineral magnetic and geochemical properties together with more sand (mean 65%) when compared with silt (mean 25%) content in tsunami sediments indicates that the area was affected by high-energy tsunami waves. The study validates environmental magnetism as a proxy, which is fast and robust for identifying the tsunami or palaeotsunami deposits.

The loess-palaeosol record on the island of Susak in Croatia is a unique archive of Late Glacial climate changes in the Adriatic region, possibly even in the wider area. On Susak up to 90 m of thick Quaternary sediments were deposited, and are accessible for detailed palaeoclimate reconstructions. In this paper, the results of a high-resolution grain-size and rock magnetic investigation on the Last Glacial (Upper Pleniglacial) Sand Pit section from Susak are presented. In spite of its significant thickness, the Sand Pit section does not represent a continuous record; it is a result of a very dynamic environment. There, the deposition of dust and formation of loess has been interrupted by pedogenesis, periods of increased sand accumulation, erosion due to slope wash and water activity, redeposition and wildfires, and all in the time period of about 10.000 years of the Upper Pleniglacial, as seen from the IRSL dating results. The grain-size data clearly show a shift towards coarser grain sizes which differs from typical loess regions. Such predominance of the coarser-grained over the fine-grained fraction, very likely resulted from the predominance of deposition over pedogenesis, increased wind activity and proximal source of material. The rock magnetic signal preserved in the sediment also differs compared to loess-palaeosol records from other regions. The susceptibility values are several times higher than in the records from the Pannonian basin and from typical Eurasian loess. Both the increased susceptibility values and the grain-size are very likely the result of a significant proximal material input from the Po River plain.
