Spacecraft missions have observed regolith blankets of unconsolidated subcentimetre particles on stony asteroids1–3. Telescopic data have suggested the presence of regolith blankets also on carbonaceous asteroids, including (101955) Bennu4 and (162173) Ryugu5. However, despite observations of processes that are capable of comminuting boulders into unconsolidated materials, such as meteoroid bombardment6,7 and thermal cracking8, Bennu and Ryugu lack extensive areas covered in subcentimetre particles7,9. Here we report an inverse correlation between the local abundance of subcentimetre particles and the porosity of rocks on Bennu. We interpret this finding to mean that accumulation of unconsolidated subcentimetre particles is frustrated where the rocks are highly porous, which appears to be most of the surface10. The highly porous rocks are compressed rather than fragmented by meteoroid impacts, consistent with laboratory experiments11,12, and thermal cracking proceeds more slowly than in denser rocks. We infer that regolith blankets are uncommon on carbonaceous asteroids, which are the most numerous type of asteroid13. By contrast, these terrains should be common on stony asteroids, which have less porous rocks and are the second-most populous group by composition13. The higher porosity of carbonaceous asteroid materials may have aided in their compaction and cementation to form breccias, which dominate the carbonaceous chondrite meteorites14. The absence of fine regolith on the asteroid Bennu is due to the high porosity of its rocks, which compress rather than fragment after impacts and exhibit slow thermal cracking.

NASA’s Dawn mission revealed a partially differentiated Ceres that has experienced cryovolcanic activity throughout its history up to the recent past. The Occator impact crater, which formed ~22 Myr ago, displays bright deposits (faculae) across its floor whose origins are still under debate: two competing hypotheses involve eruption of brines from the crust–mantle transition boundary (remnants of an ancient ocean) or alternatively from a shallow impact melt chamber. Here we report new constraints on the history of Occator that help in testing the hypotheses of its formation. We used high-resolution images of the Dawn Framing Camera obtained close to the end of the mission. We found a long-lasting and recent period of cryovolcanic activity, which started ≤9 Myr ago and lasted for several million years. Several resurfacing events, affecting the faculae and some (dark) solidified impact melt units, are shown to have occurred millions of years after crater formation and the dissipation of the impact-generated heat. These findings are indicative of a deep-seated brine source. Extensive volatile-driven emplacement of bright material occurred in the central floor, causing its subsidence due to mass loss at depth. Finally, a thick (extrusive) dome of bright material was raised in the central depression. The derived chronostratigraphy of Occator is consistent with a recently geologically active world, where salts play a major role in preserving liquid in a heat-starved body. High-spatial-resolution images of the bright points at Occator crater on Ceres, taken during the second extended Dawn mission, allowed reconstruction of the chronology of their formation. The area experienced extensive cryovolcanism less than nine million years ago that lasted several million years, indicating recent geological activity.

Perseverance’s Mastcam-Z instrument provides high-resolution stereo and multispectral images with a unique combination of spatial resolution, spatial coverage, and wavelength coverage along the rover’s traverse in Jezero crater, Mars. Images reveal rocks consistent with an igneous (including volcanic and/or volcaniclastic) and/or impactite origin and limited aqueous alteration, including polygonally fractured rocks with weathered coatings; massive boulder-forming bedrock consisting of mafic silicates, ferric oxides, and/or iron-bearing alteration minerals; and coarsely layered outcrops dominated by olivine. Pyroxene dominates the iron-bearing mineralogy in the fine-grained regolith, while olivine dominates the coarse-grained regolith. Solar and atmospheric imaging observations show significant intra- and intersol variations in dust optical depth and water ice clouds, as well as unique examples of boundary layer vortex action from both natural (dust devil) and Ingenuity helicopter–induced dust lifting. High-resolution stereo imaging also provides geologic context for rover operations, other instrument observations, and sample selection, characterization, and confirmation.

Carbonate minerals have been detected in Jezero crater, an ancient lake basin that is the landing site of the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover, and within the regional olivine‐bearing (ROB) unit in the Nili Fossae region surrounding this crater. It has been suggested that some carbonates in the margin fractured unit, a rock unit within Jezero crater, formed in a fluviolacustrine environment, which would be conducive to preservation of biosignatures from paleolake‐inhabiting lifeforms. Here, we show that carbonate‐bearing rocks within and outside of Jezero crater have the same range of visible‐to‐near‐infrared carbonate absorption strengths, carbonate absorption band positions, thermal inertias, and morphologies. Thicknesses of exposed carbonate‐bearing rock cross‐sections in Jezero crater are ∼75–90 m thicker than typical ROB unit cross‐sections in the Nili Fossae region, but have similar thicknesses to ROB unit exposures in Libya Montes. These similarities in carbonate properties within and outside of Jezero crater is consistent with a shared origin for all of the carbonates in the Nili Fossae region. Carbonate absorption minima positions indicate that both Mg‐ and more Fe‐rich carbonates are present in the Nili Fossae region, consistent with the expected products of olivine carbonation. These estimated carbonate chemistries are similar to those in martian meteorites and the Comanche carbonates investigated by the Spirit rover in Columbia Hills. International audience; The OSIRIS-REx Visible and InfraRed Spectrometer (OVIRS) onboard the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft detected ~3.4-μm absorption features indicative of carbonates and organics on near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu. We apply a Kolmogorov-Smirnov similarity test to OVIRS spectra of Bennu and laboratory spectra of minerals to categorize 3.4-μm features observed on Bennu as representing either carbonates or organics. Among the 15,585 spectra acquired by OVIRS during high-resolution (4 to 9 m/spectrum footprint) reconnaissance observations of select locations on Bennu's surface, we find 544 spectral matches with carbonates and 245 spectral matches with organics (total of 789 high-confidence spectral matches). We map the locations of these matches and characterize features of Bennu's surface using corresponding image data. Image data are used to quantitatively characterize the albedo within each spectrometer footprint. We find no apparent relationships between spectral classification and surface morphological expression, and we find no correlation between carbon species classification and other spectral properties such as slope or band depth. This suggests either that carbonates and organics are ubiquitous across the surface of Bennu, independent of surface features (consistent with findings from laboratory studies of carbonaceous chondrites), or that the observations do not have the spatial resolution required to resolve differences. However, we find more organic spectral matches at certain locations, including the site from which the OSIRIS-REx mission collected a sample, than at others. Higher concentrations of organics may be explained if these materials have been more recently exposed to surface alteration processes, perhaps by recent crater formation.

In near‐infrared spectral studies, the relationship between the 1‐μm absorption (Band I) center and the band area ratio (BAR, the area ratio of 2–1‐μm absorption features) is useful in compositional and mineralogical analyses of ferrous mineral‐bearing mixtures. Zhang and Cloutis (2020), https://doi.org/10.1029/2020ea001153, investigated various lunar ferrous iron‐bearing rocks and minerals and found that pyroxene‐bearing materials rich in ilmenite (Ilm), plagioclase (Pl), or glass are offset from the lunar olivine‐clinopyroxene‐orthopyroxene (Ol‐Cpx‐Opx) mixing line in the plot of the BAR versus the Band I center. To analyze the variation trends of the spectral properties of these mixtures with different components, this study presents a systematic evaluation of laboratory spectra of terrestrial and synthetic ferrous iron‐bearing mineral mixtures based on published databases. In general, the mixing trends of the Pl‐pyroxene mixtures, the glass‐pyroxene mixtures, and the Ilm‐basalt mixtures are consistent with the findings of Zhang and Cloutis (2020), https://doi.org/10.1029/2020ea001153. Moreover, this study also finds that the BAR of the Pl‐pyroxene mixtures varies nonlinearly with different relative abundances and that the BAR is generally not sensitive to Pl abundances below 60%. For glass‐pyroxene mixtures, the corresponding data points are usually appreciably offset from the Ol‐Cpx‐Opx mixing line at glass abundances above 20%. The BAR of the Ilm‐basalt mixtures increases with increasing Ilm content, mainly due to the weakening of 1‐μm absorption generally being greater than that of 2‐μm absorption.

The dwarf planet Ceres is a heavily cratered rocky body, and complex craters with a central peak are widely observed on its surface. These types of craters form when a large body impacts the surface, generating extreme temperatures and pressures. During the impact event a large volume of rock is raised from the subsurface and a central uplift is formed. The material composing the central uplift is called crater central peak material (ccp) and the spectral analysis of such geologic areas can provide information about the composition of Ceres’ subsurface. Reflectance spectra of 32 ccps, acquired by the VIR spectrometer on board the NASA/Dawn spacecraft, were analyzed and shows absorption bands located at about 2.7, 3.1, 3.4 and 4.0 µm which are also common on the Cerean surface. These absorptions are related, respectively, to Mg-phyllosilicates, NH4-phyllosilicates and Mg/Ca-carbonates. The spectral parameters considered in this work are: spectral slopes estimated between 1.2 µm and 1.9 µm, band depths at 2.7-, 3.1-, 3.4- and 4.0-µm, and band centers near 4.0-µm. The ccps spectral parameters were analyzed in conjunction with other Cerean parameters, such as the estimated depth of excavation of the material composing the central peak, in order to search for correlations and information about Ceres’ subsurface. Central peak material located polewards show stronger 2.7- and 3.1-µm band depths with respect to those at the equatorial region, suggesting that subsurface deposits closer to poles are probably richer in Mg- and NH4-phyllosilicates. The 3.4-µm spectral feature is also deeper in ccps located at poleward latitudes, similar to the phyllosilicates. Conversely, the 4.0-µm band does not show this trend with latitude. An increase in both 3.1- and 3.4-µm band depths with the estimated depth of excavation indicates that the spectral feature at 3.4-µm is the result of different contributions from carbonates and NH4-phyllosilicates, as expected. However, depending on their relative influence, the shape of the 3.4-µm spectral feature can vary. Phyllosilicates and carbonates are the resulting products of aqueous alteration of chondritic material and, given the increasing abundance of such minerals (in particular ammoniated phyllosilicates) with depth of excavation, it is likely that our investigation involved subsurface layers nearby the boundary between the volatile-rich crust and the silicate-rich mantle. Na-carbonate is found in the crater central peak material of Ernutet, Haulani and Ikapati, characterized by an estimated depth of excavation of about 6–9 km, where deposits of sodium carbonates could be locally present.

Iron‐bearing minerals are a major component of materials on the lunar surface, and many of them can be distinguished based on the diagnostic absorption features in visible and near‐infrared reflectance spectra. The relationship between the 1 µm absorption (Band I) center and the band area ratio (BAR), defined as the ratio of 2–1 µm absorption areas, provides a sensitive way to estimate the relative abundance of olivine (Ol) and pyroxene. In the plot of the BAR value versus the Band I center, the Ol‐orthopyroxene (Opx) mixing line (derived from terrestrial materials) is strictly applicable only to Ol‐Opx mixtures. Based on published database of laboratory spectra and compositional data for lunar rocks and mineral separates, this study investigated the spectral characteristics of a variety of common Fe2+‐bearing lunar minerals and rocks, such as clinopyroxene (Cpx), ilmenite‐rich basalt, pyroxene‐bearing anorthosite, and glass‐rich impact melt. The lunar Ol‐Cpx‐Opx mixing line for rocks and minerals is determined, which contains less curvature than the Ol‐Opx mixing line, consistent with both the higher Fe2+ content of lunar mafic silicates and the presence of appreciable Cpx. This study suggests that some of the pyroxene‐bearing lunar materials that are rich in ilmenite, glass, or plagioclase can also be distinguished by this method. These results indicate that the plot of the BAR value versus the Band I center is a useful tool for spectral analysis of lunar composition and mineralogy, especially for those having pyroxene‐dominated spectra.

Using data acquired by the OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer) mission, we investigate spectral properties of craters on the near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu. We compare Bennu's craters with its global average by means of four spectral parameters: (a) minimum position of the band at 2.7 μm, (b) depth of the hydrated phyllosilicate absorption band at 2.7 μm, (c) normalized spectral slope from 0.55 to 2.0 μm, and (d) reflectance factor at 0.55 μm. We examine 45 craters using spectral data obtained under various observing conditions. For 20 craters, we find a shortward shift of the 2.7-μm band minimum relative to the global 2.7-μm band minimum, which we attribute to the presence of relatively fresh (less space-weathered) material excavated from the sub-surface by crater-forming impacts. For three craters, we find an anti-correlation between spectral slopes and reflectance factor for a series of spectra acquired during a specific scan, where we observe that spectra become redder and darker towards the center of the crater. We attribute this to the presence of fine-particulate regolith. Localized spectral heterogeneities are apparent inside a prominent equatorial crater on Bennu, which is one of the asteroid's oldest geological features. We propose that such local spectral heterogeneities could be used as a tracer of mass movement on Bennu. We show that younger craters are redder, brighter, and have deeper 2.7-μm bands. Comparing global average spectral values of Bennu and crater frequency distributions as a function of the chosen spectral parameters, we find that craters evolve to assume the global average spectral properties of Bennu. A positive correlation identified between the reflectance factor and 2.7-μm band depth suggests that brighter craters tend to be more hydrated. Finally, we put into context, the results from the Small Carry-on Impactor experiment by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft, which created an artificial crater on the near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu.

The SuperCam Instrument Suite [1-4], a US-French-Spanish-Danish collaboration, consists of three separate units: the Body Unit (BU) within the Rover [2], the Mast Unit (MU) at the top of the Perseverance Remote Sensing Mast [3], and Calibration Targets [4] located on the rover deck. SuperCam includes a passive visible/near-infrared (VISIR) spectroscopy system that will identify minerals near the rover (mm-scale) to distant outcrops (m-scale) over an extended wavelength range (0.385-0.465 µm, 0.536-0.853 µm, 1.3-2.6 µm) that is diagnostic for most mineral classes.The infrared spectrometer (IRS) in the MU [5] uses an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) excited by a RF signal to successively diffract up to 256 different wavelengths ranging between 1.3 and 2.6 µm on one of two available photodiodes to produce a single spectrum in about 80 seconds at a spectral resolution of 5-20 nm. The field-of-view (FOV) of the IRS is 1.15 mrad and is co-aligned with the RMI boresight. The visible (VIS) system in the BU comprises three spectrometers covering the UV (245 – 340 nm), violet (385 – 465 nm), and visible and near-infrared (VNIR, 536–853 nm). The spectrometers are fed by light collected by the telescope in the MU through an optical fiber connecting the MU and BU. The violet spectrometer has a spectral resolution of 0.12 nm, and the VNIR transmission spectrometer has a spectral resolution of 0.35 – 0.70 nm. The VIS FOV is 0.74 mrad and co-aligned with the IR FOV.Several SuperCam calibration targets (SCCT) are dedicated to VISIR spectroscopy, including an AluWhite white target, an Aeroglaze Z307 black target, and red, cyan, and green color targets [4]. Several of the other targets whose primary purpose is for other techniques exhibit useful VISIR spectral features and will be observed [5].Raw data will be converted to radiance (W/m2/sr/µm) with calibrated wavelengths using the instrument transfer function [6-7]. Relative reflectance spectra will be generated by dividing the calibrated radiance spectrum by either (1) a Mars atmospheric transmission spectrum and then by a modeled solar irradiance spectrum; or (2) a radiance spectrum of the white SCCT taken close in time to the surface observation, as is done with Mastcam-Z calibration [8].This poster will show initial VISIR data acquired on Mars, compared with test and performance data obtained at Paris Observatory, LANL, and JPL. Finding suitable quantities of key resources for life-support and refueling is vital to future sustained lunar manned bases and commercial activities. There are large uncertainties in the lunar near-surface distribution of water ice volatiles and relevant in-situ resources, such as ilmenite (FeTiO3). Moreover, planned future lunar orbiter missions have relatively limited spatial resolution, in the km range, for the volatile mappings relative to typical lander and rover range capabilities, especially for operations within the lunar Permanently Shadowed Regions (PSRs) that could shelter accumulated water ice deposits.VMMO, for Volatile and Mineralogy Mapping Orbiter, is a low-cost 20 kg 12U Cubesat that comprises the Lunar Volatile and Mineralogy Mapper (LVMM) multi-wavelength chemical lidar science payload, the Compact LunAr Ionizing Radiation Environment(CLAIRE) monitoring payload, a COTS electronics test bed, and the supporting 12U Cubesat bus with propulsion, direct to Earth S-band and 1560 nm optical communications, on board data processing and a suite of altitude and pointing sensors for semiautonomous vision-assisted navigation from lunar orbit.VMMO will most likely be deployed from a commercial lunar transportation provider, such as Astrobotics, into a suitable near-polar injection orbit. The on-board propulsion will be used to achieve a stable lunar frozen orbit for the subsequent science operations with a perilune over the south pole under 100 km to assist the LVMM volatile and mineralogy mappings.The compact LVMM is a multi-wavelength Chemical Lidar (LVMM can also be used in a passive multispectral mode at 300 nm, 532 nm, 1064 nm and 1560 nm to map the lunar ilmenite in-situ resource distribution during the lunar day using the characteristic surface-reflected solar illumination. By combining the passive lunar day measurements with the active lunar night measurements, some new insights into the lunar diurnal water cycle should be possible.This paper discusses the VMMO science requirements and the supporting 12U Cubesat platform and LVMM multiwavelength chemical lidar payload and some of the associated design trade-offs.

The Mastcam-Z Camera is a stereoscopic, multispectral camera with zoom ca pability on NASA’s Mars-2020 Perseverance rover. The Mastcam-Z relies on a set of two deck-mounted radiometric calibration targets to validate camera performance and to provide an instantaneous estimate of local irradiance and allow conversion of image data to units of reflectance (R∗ or I/F) on a tactical timescale. Here, we describe the heritage, design, and optical characterization of these targets and discuss their use during rover operations. The Mastcam-Z primary calibration target inherits features of camera calibration targets on the Mars Exploration Rovers, Phoenix and Mars Science Laboratory missions. This target will be regularly imaged during flight to accompany multispectral observations of the martian surface. The primary target consists of a gold-plated aluminum base, eight strong hollow cylinder Sm2Co17 alloy permanent magnets mounted in the base, eight ceramic color and grayscale patches mounted over the magnets, four concentric, ceramic grayscale rings and a central aluminum shadow post (gnomon) painted with an IR-black paint. The magnets are expected to keep the central area of each patch relatively free of Martian aeolian dust. The Mastcam-Z secondary calibration target is a simple angled aluminum shelf carrying seven vertically mounted ceramic color and grayscale chips and seven identical, but hori zontally mounted ceramic chips. The secondary target is intended to augment and validate the calibration-related information derived from the primary target. The Mastcam-Z radio metric calibration targets are critically important to achieving Mastcam-Z science objectives for spectroscopy and photometric properties, Proyecto MINECO Retos de la Sociedad. As part of the Bagnold Dune campaign conducted by Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity, visible/near-infrared reflectance spectra of dune sands were acquired using Mast Camera (Mastcam) multispectral imaging (445–1013 nm) and Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) passive point spectroscopy (400–840 nm). By comparing spectra from pristine and rover-disturbed ripple crests and troughs within the dune field, and through analysis of sieved grain size fractions, constraints on mineral segregation from grain sorting could be determined. In general, the dune areas exhibited low relative reflectance, a weak ~530 nm absorption band, an absorption band near 620 nm, and a spectral downturn after ~685 nm consistent with olivine-bearing sands. The finest grain size fractions occurred within ripple troughs and in the subsurface and typically exhibited the strongest ~530 nm bands, highest relative reflectances, and weakest red/near-infrared ratios, consistent with a combination of crystalline and amorphous ferric materials. Coarser-grained samples were the darkest and bluest and exhibited weaker ~530 nm bands, lower relative reflectances, and stronger downturns in the near-infrared, consistent with greater proportions of mafic minerals such as olivine and pyroxene. These grains were typically segregated along ripple crests and among the upper surfaces of grain flows in disturbed sands. Sieved dune sands exhibited progressive decreases in reflectance with increasing grain size, as observed in laboratory spectra of olivine size separates. The continuum of spectral features observed between the coarse- and fine-grained dune sands suggests that mafic grains, ferric materials, and air fall dust mix in variable proportions depending on aeolian activity and grain sorting.

There is abundant petrologic evidence for the oxidation of Fe during the aqueous alteration of chondrites, and water must have been the oxidant for this process. The H2 lost from the chondrite parent bodies as a result of Fe oxidation would have been isotopically very light, enriching any residual water in D. The extents of the D enrichments will have depended on the fractions of water consumed and the temperatures during Fe oxidation. Here we have estimated the likely ranges of water consumed by Fe oxidation in the CI, CM, CR and LL parent bodies, as well as the likely range of changes in water H isotopic compositions this would have produced. We first used Fe XANES to determine the Fe valences of bulk meteorite powders in Orgueil (CI1), a number of CMs and CRs that experienced varying degrees of alteration, and Semarkona (LL3.00). The total ranges of bulk Fe valences we obtained were: Orgueil 2.77, CMs 2.40–2.63, CRs 1.46–2.54, and Semarkona 2.10. Combining previous estimates of the present water/OH contents of our samples with the present bulk Fe valences and an estimated range of initial bulk Fe valences, we estimate the likely ranges of fractional water losses to have been: Orgueil 15–26%, Semarkona 73–83%, CMs 23–48%, and CRs 39–62%. The associated maximum and minimum changes in the H isotopic compositions of the remaining water were estimated assuming the equilibrium H2-H2O isotopic fractionation factor, Rayleigh fractionation of the H2, and oxidation temperatures of 0–200 °C. Using previous estimates of the water H isotopic compositions in the chondrites, the ranges of estimated δD values for the initial chondritic waters are: Orgueil −672‰ to −422‰, CMs −676‰ to −493‰, CRs −527‰ to −56‰, and Semarkona −527‰ to 154‰. The CI, CM, CR and ordinary chondrites all accreted water with similar H isotopic compositions that were distinct from the compositions of comets or Saturn’s moon Enceladus. Thus, the carbonaceous chondrites are unlikely to have come from comets or from bodies that were scattered into the Asteroid Belt from comet forming regions by orbital migration of the giant planets. If the carbonaceous chondrites did form in the outer Solar System, as some models predict, it was probably not beyond 7 AU. However, based on water isotopic compositions at present it is equally plausible that the carbonaceous chondrites formed in the inner Solar System.

Dacitic rocks, often indicative of crustal recycling on Earth, have been identified in some regions on Mars, as have possible hydrothermally/aqueously-altered dacites. To enable more robust identification of unaltered and altered dacites on Mars and other planetary bodies, we undertook a spectroscopic-structural-compositional study of altered and unaltered dacites from a dacitic volcanic region in Methana, Greece. Dacites erupted in this region range from fresh to pervasively hydrothermally altered, resulting in friable, Si-enriched products, as well as fumarolic deposition of Si and S-rich precipitates. Spectrally, fresh dacites are unremarkable in the 0.35–2.5 µm region with low, generally flat, reflectance and few, if any, absorption bands. Dacite infrared spectra exhibit Si-O absorption features in the 8–10 µm region (which are characteristic of Si-bearing rocks, in general). With increasing alteration, reflectance over the 0.35–2.5 µm range increases, absorption bands in the 1.4 and 1.9 µm region, associated with H 2 O/OH, and in the 2.2–2.3 µm region, associated with SiOH, become deeper, Fe 3+ -associated absorption bands in the 0.43 and 0.9 µm region appear, and the Christiansen feature near 8 µm moves to shorter wavelengths. Silica-rich coatings appear to be spectrally indistinguishable from Si-rich alteration. Alteration-formed sulfates may be detectable by the presence of diagnostic absorption features in the 0.35–2.5 µm region. Spectral similarities between different poorly crystalline high-Si phases make it difficult to uniquely determine the processes that formed high-Si surfaces that have been identified on Mars. However, the samples described here show a variety of spectral features that correspond to variable amounts of alteration. We find a similar range of spectral features, likely due to similar phases, on Mars, perhaps indicating a similar range of alteration environments. Comparison of laboratory spectra to Mars observational data also suggests that the major Si-rich regions likely consist of assemblages that more mineralogically complex than those included in this study.

Meteorite impacts on Earth and Mars can generate hydrothermal systems that alter the primary mineralogies of rocks and provide suitable environments for microbial colonization. We investigate a calcite–marcasite-bearing vug at the ~23 km diameter Haughton impact structure, Devon Island, Nunavut, Canada, using imaging spectroscopy of the outcrop in the field (0.65–1.1 μm) and samples in the laboratory (0.4–2.5 μm), point spectroscopy (0.35–2.5 μm), major element chemistry, and X-ray diffraction analyses. The mineral assemblages mapped at the outcrop include marcasite; marcasite with minor gypsum and jarosite; fibroferrite and copiapite with minor gypsum and melanterite; gypsum, Fe3+ oxides, and jarosite; and calcite, gypsum, clay, microcline, and quartz. Hyperspectral mapping of alteration phases shows spatial patterns that illuminate changes in alteration conditions and formation of specific mineral phases. Marcasite formed from the postimpact hydrothermal system under reducing conditions, while subsequent weathering oxidized the marcasite at low temperatures and water/rock ratios. The acidic fluids resulting from the oxidation collected on flat-lying portions of the outcrop, precipitating fibroferrite + copiapite. That assemblage then likely dissolved, and the changing chemistry and pH resulting from interaction with the calcite-rich host rock formed gypsum-bearing red coatings. These results have implications for understanding water–rock interactions and habitabilities at this site and on Mars.

We introduce an innovative three-dimensional spectral approach (three band parameter space with polyhedrons) that can be used for both qualitative and quantitative analyses improving the characterization of surface heterogeneity of (4) Vesta. It is an advanced and more robust methodology compared to the standard two-dimensional spectral approach (two band parameter space). The Dawn Framing Camera (FC) color data obtained during High Altitude Mapping Orbit (resolution ~ 60 m/pixel) is used. The main focus is on the howardite-eucrite-diogenite (HED) lithologies containing carbonaceous chondritic material, olivine, and impact-melt. The archived spectra of HEDs and their mixtures, from RELAB, HOSERLab and USGS databases as well as our laboratory-measured spectra are used for this study. Three-dimensional convex polyhedrons are defined using computed band parameter values of laboratory spectra. Polyhedrons based on the parameters of Band Tilt (R0.92{\mu}m/R0.96{\mu}m), Mid Ratio ((R0.75{\mu}m/R0.83{\mu}m)/(R0.83{\mu}m/R0.92{\mu}m)) and reflectance at 0.55 {\mu}m (R0.55{\mu}m) are chosen for the present analysis. An algorithm in IDL programming language is employed to assign FC data points to the respective polyhedrons. The Arruntia region in the northern hemisphere of Vesta is selected for a case study because of its geological and mineralogical importance. We observe that this region is eucrite-dominated howarditic in composition. The extent of olivine-rich exposures within an area of 2.5 crater radii is ~ 12% larger than the previous finding (Thangjam et al., 2014). Lithologies of nearly pure CM2-chondrite, olivine, glass, and diogenite are not found in this region. Imaging spectroscopy is a powerful, non-destructive mineralogic tool that provides insights into a variety of geological processes. This remote measurement technique has been used for decades from orbital or aerial platforms to characterize surface compositions of Earth and other solar system bodies. These instruments have now been miniaturized for use in the laboratory and field, thereby enabling petrologic analyses of samples and outcrops. Here, we review the technique and present four examples showing the exciting science potential and new insights into geological processes. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) recently commissioned the development of a suite of over fifty well-characterized planetary analogue materials. These materials are terrestrial rocks and minerals that are similar to those known or suspected to occur on the lunar or martian surfaces. These include: Mars analogue sedimentary, hydrothermal, igneous and low-temperature alteration rock suites; lunar analogue basaltic and anorthositic rock suites; and a generic impactite rock suite from a variety of terrestrial impact structures. Representative thin sections of the materials have been characterized by optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Reflectance spectra have been collected in the ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared and mid-infrared, covering 0.2–25 μm. Thermal infrared emission spectra were collected from 5 to 50 μm. Raman spectra with 532 nm excitation, and laser-induced fluorescence spectra with 405 nm excitation were also measured. Bulk chemical analysis was carried out using X-ray fluorescence, with Fe valence determined by wet chemistry. Chemical and mineralogical data were collected using a field-portable Terra XRD–XRF instrument similar to CheMin on the MSL Curiosity rover. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) data similar to those measured by ChemCam on MSL were collected for powdered samples, cut slab surfaces, and as depth profiles into weathered surfaces where present. Three-dimensional laser camera images of rock textures were collected for selected samples. The CSA intends to make available sample powders ( Aiming to complement existing planetary analogue rock and mineral libraries, the CSA suite represents a new resource for planetary scientists and engineers. We envision many potential applications for these materials in the definition, development and testing of new analytical instruments for use in planetary missions, as well as possible calibration and ground-truthing of remote sensing data sets. These materials may also be useful as reference materials for cross-calibration between different instruments and laboratories. Comparison of the analytical data for selected samples is useful for highlighting the relative strengths, weaknesses and synergies of different analytical techniques.

We investigate an outcrop of ∼187 Ma lacustrine pillow basalts of the Talcott Formation exposed in Meriden, Connecticut, USA, focusing on coordinated analyses of one pillow lava to characterize the aqueous history of these basalts in the Hartford Basin. This work uses a suite of multidisciplinary measurements, including hyperspectral imaging, other spectroscopic techniques, and chemical and mineralogical analyses, from the microscopic scale up to the scale of an outcrop. The phases identified in the sample are albite, large iron oxides, and titanite throughout; calcite in vesicles; calcic clinopyroxene, aegirine, and Fe/Mg-bearing clay in the rind; and fine-grained hematite and pyroxenes in the interior. Using imaging spectroscopy, the chemistry and mineralogy results extend to the hand sample and larger outcrop. From all of the analyses, we suggest that the pillow basalts were altered initially after emplacement, either by heated lake water or magmatic fluids, at temperatures of at least 400–600 °C, and the calcic clinopyroxenes and aegirine identified in the rind are a preserved record of that alteration. As the hydrothermal system cooled to slightly lower temperatures, clays formed in the rind, and, during this alteration, the sample oxidized to form hematite in the matrix of the interior and Fe 3+ in the pyroxenes in the rind. During the waning stages of the hydrothermal system, calcite precipitated in vesicles within the rind. Later, diagenetic processes albitized the sample, with albite replacing plagioclase, lining vesicles, and accreting onto the exterior of the sample. This albitization or Na-metasomatism occurred when the lake within the Hartford Basin evaporated during a drier past climatic era, resulting in Na-rich brines. As Ca-rich plagioclase altered to albite, Ca was released into solution, eventually precipitating as calcite in previously-unfilled vesicles, dominantly in the interior of the pillow. Coordinated analyses of this sample permit identification of the alteration phases and help synthesize the aqueous history of pillow lavas of the Talcott Formation. These results are also relevant to Mars, where volcanically-resurfaced open basin lakes have been found, and this Hartford Basin outcrop may be a valuable analog for any potential volcano–lacustrine interactions. The results can also help to inform the utility and optimization of potentially complementary, synergistic, and uniquely-suited techniques for characterization of hydrothermally-altered terrains.

Space-weathering as well as shock effects can darken meteorite and asteroid reflectance spectra. We present a detailed comparative study on shock-darkening and space-weathering using different lithologies of the Chelyabinsk LL5 chondrite. Compared to space-weathering, the shock processes do not cause significant spectral slope changes and are more efficient in attenuating the orthopyroxene 2 μm absorption band. This results in a distinct shock vector in the reflectance spectra principal component analysis, moving the shocked silicate-rich Chelyabinsk spectra from the S-complex space into the C/X complex. In contrast to this, the space-weathering vector stays within the S complex, moving from Q type to S type. Moreover, the 2 μm to 1μm band depth ratio (BDR) as well as the 2 μm to 1μm band area ratio (BAR) are not appreciably affected by shock-darkening or shock melting. Space-weathering, however, causes significant shifts in both BDR and BAR toward higher values. Application of the BDR method to the three distinct areas on the asteroid Itokawa reveals that Itokawa is rather uniformly space-weathered and not influenced by regolith roughness or relative albedo changes. © 2020. As part of the Phase 2 Bagnold Dune campaign at Gale Crater, Mars, constraints on the geochemistry, mineralogy, and oxidation state of pristine and disturbed linear sand ripples were made using visible/near‐infrared spectral observations for comparison to Phase 1 spectra of the barchan dunes to the north. Spectra acquired by the ChemCam and Mastcam instruments (400–1,000 nm) at four Phase 2 locations revealed similar overall spectral trends between the two regions, but most Phase 2 sands were redder in the visible wavelengths. The majority of targets exhibited lower red/infrared ratios, higher ~530‐nm band depths, and higher red/blue ratios than Phase 1 samples, suggesting a greater proportion of redder, fine‐grained, ferric sands in Phase 2 samples. This is consistent with the slightly greater proportion of hematite in Phase 2 samples as determined from CheMin analyses of the Ogunquit sands, which may reflect contamination from the surrounding hematite‐bearing Murray formation bedrock.

The microbial ecology and activity of serpentine deposits and associated hydrated minerals are largely unknown. Previous research has largely focused on microbial communities in active serpentinizing systems, whereas relatively little research has demonstrated the ability of serpentine deposits to host microbial communities after the cessation of serpentinization. Given the potential role of serpentinization reactions fueling primitive microbial metabolisms on early Earth and the identification of serpentine deposits on Mars, knowledge of these geobiological relationships and potential for serpentine to host extant microbial communities and preserve biosignatures is increasingly important for planetary exploration seeking signs of life. The selection of habitable sites most likely to yield putative biosignatures is crucial to mission success. In this study, we aimed to characterize, on the basis of both metabolic activity and taxonomic composition, the microbial communities hosted in two naturally co-occurring and mineralogically distinct substrates within the serpentine-rich Jeffrey Mine pit-igneous quartzofeldspathic intrusives and serpentinite. Detection of heterotrophic activity in both lithologies at 24°C, and in serpentinite at -5°C, demonstrated that each substrate had the ability to host a viable microbial community, at Mars-relevant temperatures. Targeted amplicon sequencing subsequently showed the presence of bacterial, fungal, and photosynthetic microbial communities in both substrates. Here, we have demonstrated the presence of a viable lithic microbial community within two rock types in the Jeffrey Mine and provided evidence that lithologies associated with serpentine deposits and proximal hydrated minerals have the ability to support diverse prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial colonization.

The discovery of olivine on Vesta’s surface by the VIR imaging spectrometer onboard the Dawn space mission has forced us to reconsider our views of Vestan petrogenetic models. Olivines were expected to be present in the interior of Vesta: in the mantle of a vertically layered body as invoked by the magma ocean models, or at the base (or within) the mantle–crust boundary as proposed by fractionation models. Olivines have been detected by VIR-Dawn in two wide areas near Arruntia and Bellicia, regions located in the northern hemisphere. Interestingly, these olivine-rich terrains are far from the Rheasilvia and the more ancient Veneneia basins, which are expected to have excavated the crust down to reach the mantle. In this work we present our attempts to identify other undetected olivine rich areas on Vesta by using spectral parameters sensitive to olivine such as the Band Area Ratio (BAR) and other specific parameters created for the detection of olivines on Mars (forsterite, fayalite and a generic olivine index). As a preliminary step we calibrated these parameters by means of VIS–IR spectra of different HED meteorite samples: behaviors versus sample grain size and albedo were analyzed and discussed. We selected the BAR and the Forsterite Index as the best parameters that can be used on Vesta. A cross-correlation analysis has been applied in order to detect olivine signature on the VIR hyperspectral cubes. These detections have then been confirmed by an anti-correlation analysis between the BAR and one of the olivine parameters, independent of the first method applied. In agreement with the recent discovery, Arruntia and Bellicia were found to be as the most olivine-rich areas, i.e. where the parameter values are strongest. In addition we detected 6 new regions, all but one located in the Vesta north hemisphere. This result confirms again that the old petrogenetic models cannot be straightforwardly applied to Vesta and should be reshaped in the view of these new detections. An alternative and very recent option can be represented by the model according to which surface “eruption” of material from the mantle, including olivine can reach the surface of Vesta.

In this paper we present the results of a global survey of olivine-rich lithologies on (4) Vesta. We investigated Dawn Framing Camera (FC) High Altitude Mapping Orbit (HAMO) color cubes (∼60 m/pixel resolution) by using a method described in Thangjam et al. (Thangjam, G., Nathues, A., Mengel, K., Hoffmann, M., Schafer, M., Reddy, V., Cloutis, E.A., Christensen, U., Sierks, H., Le Corre, L., Vincent, J.-B, Russell, C.T. [2014b]. Meteorit. Planet. Sci. arXiv:1408.4687 [astro-ph.EP]). In total we identified 15 impact craters exhibiting olivine-rich (>40 wt.% ol) outcrops on their inner walls, some showing olivine-rich material also in their ejecta and floors. Olivine-rich sites are concentrated in the Bellicia, Arruntia and Pomponia region on Vesta’s northern hemisphere. From our multi-color and stratigraphic analysis, we conclude that most, if not all, of the olivine-rich material identified is of exogenic origin, i.e. remnants of A- or/and S-type projectiles. The olivine-rich lithologies in the north are possibly ejecta of the ∼90 km diameter Albana crater. We cannot draw a final conclusion on their relative stratigraphic succession, but it seems that the dark material (Nathues, A., Hoffmann, M., Cloutis, E.A., Schafer, M., Reddy, V., Christensen, U., Sierks, H., Thangjam, G.S., Le Corre, L., Mengel, K., Vincent, J.-B., Russell, C.T., Prettyman, T., Schmedemann, N., Kneissl, T., Raymond, C., Gutierrez-Marques, P., Hall, I. Buttner, I. [2014b]. Icarus (239, 222--237)) and the olivine-rich lithologies are of a similar age. The origin of some potential olivine-rich sites in the Rheasilvia basin and at crater Portia are ambiguous, i.e. these are either of endogenic or exogenic origin. However, the small number and size of these sites led us to conclude that olivine-rich mantle material, containing more than 40 wt.% of olivine, is basically absent on the present surface of Vesta. In combination with recent impact models of Veneneia and Rheasilvia (Clenet, H., Jutzi, M., Barrat, J.-A., Gillet, Ph. [2014]. Lunar Planet Sci. 45, #1349; Jutzi, M., Asphaug, E., Gillet, P., Barrat, J.-A., Benz, W. [2013]. Nature 494, 207–210), which predict an excavation depth of up to 80 km, we are confident that the crust–mantle depth is significantly deeper than predicted by most evolution models (30 km; Mittlefehldt, D.W. [2014]. Asteroid 4 Vesta: A Fully Differentiated Dwarf Planet. NASA Technical Reports Server (20140004857.pdf)) or, alternatively, the olivine-content of the (upper) mantle is lower than our detection limit, which would lead to the conclusion that Vesta’s parent material was already depleted in olivine compared to CI meteorites.

Ongoing spectroscopic reconnaissance of the OSIRIS-REx target Asteroid (101955) Bennu was performed in July 2011 and May 2012. Near-infrared spectra taken during these apparitions display slightly more positive (“redder”) spectral slopes than most previously reported measurements. While observational systematic effects can produce such slope changes, and these effects cannot be ruled out, we entertain the hypothesis that the measurements are correct. Under this assumption, we present laboratory measurements investigating a plausible explanation that positive spectral slopes indicate a finer grain size for the most directly observed sub-Earth region on the asteroid. In all cases, the positive spectral slopes correspond to sub-Earth latitudes nearest to the equatorial ridge of Bennu. If confirmed by OSIRIS-REx in situ observations, one possible physical implication is that if the equatorial ridge is created by regolith migration during episodes of rapid rotation, that migration is most strongly dominated by finer grain material. Alternatively, after formation of the ridge (by regolith of any size distribution), larger-sized equatorial material may be more subject to loss due to centrifugal acceleration relative to finer grain material, where cohesive forces can preferentially retain the finest fraction (Rozitis, B., Maclennan, E., Emery, J.P. [2014]. Nature 512, 174–176).

Reflectance spectra of many asteroids and other Solar System bodies are commonly reported as “featureless”. Here, we show that weak but consistently detectable absorption bands are observable in 200–2500 nm spectra of the Tagish Lake meteorite, a likely compositional and spectral analogue for low-albedo, “spectrally-featureless” asteroids. Tagish Lake presents a rare opportunity to study multiple lithologies within a single meteorite. Reflectance spectra of Tagish Lake display significant variation between different lithologies. The spectral variations are due in part to mineralogical variations between different Tagish Lake lithologies. Ultraviolet reflectance spectra (200–400 nm), few of which have been reported in the literature to date, reveal albedo and spectral ratio variations as a function of mineralogy. Similarly visible–near infrared reflectance spectra reveal variations in albedo, spectral slope, and the presence of weak absorption features that persist across different lithologies and can be attributed to various phases present in Tagish Lake. These observations demonstrate that significant spectral variability may exist between different lithologies of Tagish Lake, which may affect the interpretation of potential source body spectra. It is also important to consider the spectral variability within the meteorite before excluding compositional links between possible parent bodies in the main belt and Tagish Lake. Tagish Lake materials may also be spectral–compositional analogues for materials on the surfaces of other dark asteroids, including some that are targets of upcoming spacecraft missions. Tagish Lake has been proposed as a spectral match for ‘ultra-primitive’ D or P-type asteroids, and the variability reported here may be reflected in spatially or rotationally-resolved spectra of possible Tagish Lake parent bodies and source objects in the Near-Earth Asteroid population. A search for objects with spectra similar to Tagish Lake has been carried out among the Near-Earth Asteroids. We have identified three possible spectral matches, the best of which are Asteroids (326732) 2003 HB6, and (17274) 2000 LC16.

Small amounts of unidentified organic compounds have only recently been inferred on Mars despite strong reasons to expect significant concentrations and decades of searching. Based on X-ray diffraction and reflectance spectroscopic analyses we show that solid oxalic acid and its most common mineral salts are stable under the pressure and ultraviolet irradiation environment of the surface of Mars, and could represent a heretofore largely overlooked reservoir of organic carbon in the martian near-surface. In addition to the delivery to Mars by carbonaceous chondrites, oxalate minerals are among the predicted breakdown products of meteoritic organic matter delivered to the martian surface, as well as any endogenic organic carbon reaching the martian surface from the interior. A reinterpretation of pyrolysis experiments from the Viking, Phoenix, and Mars Science Laboratory missions shows that all are consistent with the presence of significant concentrations of oxalate minerals. Oxalate minerals could be important in numerous martian geochemical processes, including acting as a possible nitrogen sink (as ammonium oxalate), and contributing to the formation of “organic” carbonates, methane, and hydroxyl radicals.

Acid alteration has long been proposed for the Martian surface, and so it is important to understand how the resulting alteration textures affect surface spectra. Two basaltic materials of varying crystallinity were altered in two different H2SO4 solutions (pH 1 and pH 3) for 220 days. The unaltered and altered samples were studied in the visible and near infrared (VNIR) and thermal infrared (TIR), and select samples were chosen for scanning electron microscopy analysis. Materials altered in pH 3 solutions showed little to no physical alteration, and their spectral signatures changed very little. In contrast, all materials altered in pH 1 acid displayed silica-rich alteration textures, and the morphology differed based on starting material crystallinity. The more crystalline material displayed extensive alteration reaching into the sample interiors and had weaker silica spectral features. The glass sample developed alteration layers tens of microns thick, exhibiting amorphous silica-rich spectral features that completely obscured the substrate. Thus, the strong absorption coefficient of silica effectively decreases the penetration depth of TIR spectral measurements, causing silica abundances to be grossly overestimated in remote sensing data. Additionally, glass samples with silica layers exhibited distinct concave up blue spectral slopes in the VNIR. Spectra from the northern lowland plains of Mars are modeled with high abundances of amorphous silica and exhibit concave up blue spectral slopes and are thus consistent with acid altered basaltic glass. Therefore, we conclude that large regions of the Martian surface may have formed through the interaction of basaltic glass with strongly acidic fluids. Variations and spatial distributions of bright and dark material on dwarf planet Ceres play a key role in understanding the processes that have led to its present surface composition. We define limits for bright and dark material in order to distinguish them consistently, based on the reflectance of the average surface using Dawn Framing Camera data. A systematic classification of four types of bright material is presented based on their spectral properties, composition, spatial distribution, and association with specific geomorphological features. We found obvious correlations of reflectance with spectral shape (slopes) and age; however, this is not unique throughout the bright spots. Although impact features show generally more extreme reflectance variations, several areas can only be understood in terms of inhomogeneous distribution of composition as inferred from Dawn Visible and Infrared Spectrometer data. Additional material with anomalous composition and spectral properties are rare. The identification of the composition and origin of the dark, particularly the darkest material, remains to be explored. The spectral properties and the morphology of the dark sites suggest an endogenic origin, but it is not clear whether they are more or less primitive surficial exposures or excavated subsurface but localized material. The reflectance, spectral properties, inferred composition, and geologic context collectively suggest that the bright and dark material tends to gradually change toward the average surface over time. We review the results of an extensive campaign to determine the physical, geological, and dynamical properties of asteroid (101955) Bennu. This investigation provides information on the orbit, shape, mass, rotation state, radar response, photometric, spectroscopic, thermal, regolith, and environmental properties of Bennu. We combine these data with cosmochemical and dynamical models to develop a hypothetical timeline for Bennu's formation and evolution. We infer that Bennu is an ancient object that has witnessed over 4.5 Gyr of solar system history. Its chemistry and mineralogy were established within the first 10 Myr of the solar system. It likely originated as a discrete asteroid in the inner Main Belt approximately 0.7–2 Gyr ago as a fragment from the catastrophic disruption of a large (approximately 100-km), carbonaceous asteroid. It was delivered to near-Earth space via a combination of Yarkovsky-induced drift and interaction with giant-planet resonances. During its journey, YORP processes and planetary close encounters modified Bennu's spin state, potentially reshaping and resurfacing the asteroid. We also review work on Bennu's future dynamical evolution and constrain its ultimate fate. It is one of the most Potentially Hazardous Asteroids with an approximately 1-in-2700 chance of impacting the Earth in the late 22nd century. It will most likely end its dynamical life by falling into the Sun. The highest probability for a planetary impact is with Venus, followed by the Earth. There is a chance that Bennu will be ejected from the inner solar system after a close encounter with Jupiter. OSIRIS-REx will return samples from the surface of this intriguing asteroid in September 2023.

New 40 Ar/ 39 Ar dating of impact-melted K-feldspars and impact melt rock from the ∼40 km Lake Saint Martin impact structure in Manitoba, Canada, yielded three plateau ages and one mini-plateau age in agreement with inverse isochron ages for the K-feldspar melt aliquots and a minimum age for a whole-rock impact melt sample. A combination of two plateau ages and one isochron age, with a weighted mean of 227.8 ± 0.9 Ma [±1.1 Ma; including all sources of uncertainty] (2 σ ; MSWD = 0.52; P = 0.59 ), is considered to represent the best-estimate age for the impact. The concordant 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages for the melted K-feldspars, derived from impact melt rocks in the eastern crater moat domain and the partially melted Proterozoic central uplift granite, suggest that the new dates accurately reflect the Lake Saint Martin impact event in the Carnian stage of the Late Triassic. With a relative error of ±0.4% on the 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age, the Lake Saint Martin impact structure counts among the most precisely dated impact structures on Earth. The new isotopic age for Lake Saint Martin significantly improves upon earlier Rb/Sr and (U–Th)/He results for this impact structure and contradicts the hypothesis that planet Earth experienced the formation of a giant ‘impact crater chain’ during a major Late Triassic multiple impact event.

There is increasing evidence that Mars may have once been a habitable environment. Gypsum is targeted in the search for Martian biosignatures because it can host extensive cryptoendolithic communities in extreme terrestrial environments and is widespread on Mars. In this study the viability of using different spectroscopy-based techniques to identify the presence of gypsum endolithic communities was investigated by analysing various cryptoendoliths collected from the Lake St. Martin impact crater (LSM), a Mars analogue site found in Manitoba, Canada. Concurrently, the cryptoendolithic microbial community structure present was also analysed to aid in assigning spectroscopic features to microbial community members. Two main morphologies of endolithic communities were collected from gypsum deposits at LSM: true cryptoendolithic communities and annular deposits on partially buried boulders and cobbles Chloroflexi) that has not been previously observed in gypsum endoliths. The exterior surfaces of gypsum boulders and cobbles are devoid of spectroscopic features attributable to organic molecules and detectable by reflectance, Raman, or ultraviolet-induced fluorescence spectroscopies. However, exposed interior surfaces show unique endolithic signatures detectable by each spectroscopic technique. This indicates that cryptoendolithic communities can be detected via spectroscopy-based techniques, provided they are either partially or fully exposed and enough photon–target interactions occur to enable detection.

The Dawn mission’s Framing Camera (FC) observed Asteroid (4) Vesta in 2011 and 2012 using seven color filters and one clear filter from different orbits. In the present paper we analyze recalibrated HAMO color cubes (spatial resolution ∼60 m/pixel) with a focus on dark material (DM). We present a definition of highly concentrated DM based on spectral parameters, subsequently map the DM across the Vestan surface, geologically classify DM, study its spectral properties on global and local scales, and finally, compare the FC in-flight color data with laboratory spectra. We have discovered an absorption band centered at 0.72 μm in localities of DM that show the lowest albedo values by using FC data as well as spectral information from Dawn’s imaging spectrometer VIR. Such localities are contained within impact-exposed outcrops on inner crater walls and ejecta material. Comparisons between spectral FC in-flight data, and laboratory spectra of meteorites and mineral mixtures in the wavelength range 0.4–1.0 μm, revealed that the absorption band can be attributed to the mineral serpentine, which is typically present in CM chondrites. Dark material in its purest form is rare on Vesta’s surface and is distributed globally in a non-uniform manner. Our findings confirm the hypothesis of an exogenic origin of the DM by the infall of carbonaceous chondritic material, likely of CM type. It further confirms the hypothesis that most of the DM was deposited by the Veneneia impact.

Asteroids are arguably the most accessible remnants of building blocks of the early Solar System and an essential piece of the terrestrial planet–formation puzzle. Determining their compositions and physical properties can provide important and otherwise unobtainable information concerning the origin, structure, and dynamic history of the Solar System, as well as insights into the sources of materials from which the terrestrial planets were constructed. Our understanding of the compositional structure of the asteroid belt and of individual asteroids has advanced signifi cantly since the 1970s. Strong associations between asteroids and meteorites are emerging thanks to multitechnique observations, the synthesis of observations and modeling, in situ measurements, and sample-return missions.

The dwarf planet Ceres (equatorial diameter 963km) is the largest object that has remained in the main asteroid belt ( Russell and Raymond, 2012 ), while most large bodies have been destroyed or removed by dynamical processes ( Minton and Malhotra, 2009 , Petit et al., 2001 ). Pre-Dawn investigations ( McCord and Sotin, 2005 , Castillo-Rogez and McCord, 2010 ; Castillo-Rogez et al., 2011 ) suggest that Ceres is a thermally evolved, but still volatile-rich body with potential geological activity, that was never completely molten, but possibly differentiated into a rocky core, an ice-rich mantle, and may contain remnant internal liquid water. Thermal alteration should contribute to producing a (dark) carbonaceous chondritic-like surface ( McCord and Sotin, 2005 , Castillo-Rogez and McCord, 2010 ; Castillo-Rogez et al., 2011 ; Nathues et al., 2015 ) containing ammoniated phyllosilicates ( King et al., 1992 ; De Sanctis et al., 2015 , De Sanctis et al., 2016 ). Here we show and analyse global contrast-rich colour mosaics, derived from a camera on-board Dawn at Ceres ( Russell et al., 2016 ). Colours are unexpectedly more diverse on global scale than anticipated by Hubble Space Telescope ( Li et al., 2006 ) and ground-based observations ( Reddy et al. 2015 ). Dawn data led to the identification of five major colour units. The youngest units identified by crater counting, termed bright and bluish units, are exclusively found at equatorial and intermediate latitudes. We identified correlations between the distribution of the colour units, crater size, and formation age, inferring a crustal stratigraphy. Surface brightness and spectral properties are not correlated. The youngest surface features are the bright spots at crater Occator (~O 92km). Their colour spectra are highly consistent with the presence of carbonates while most of the remaining surface resembles modifications of various types of ordinary carbonaceous chondrites.

Spring and evaporite deposits are considered two of the most promising environments for past habitability on Mars and preservation of biosignatures. Manitoba, Canada hosts the East German Creek (EGC) hypersaline spring complex, and the post impact evaporite gypsum beds of the Lake St. Martin (LSM) impact. The EGC complex has microbial mats, sediments, algae and biofabrics, while endolithic communities are ubiquitous in the LSM gypsum beds. These communities are spectrally detectable based largely on the presence of a chlorophyll absorption band at 670 nm; however, the robustness of this feature under Martian surface conditions was unclear. Biological and biology-bearing samples from EGC and LSM were exposed to conditions similar to the surface of present day Mars (high UV flux, 100 mbar, anoxic, CO2 rich) for up to 44 days, and preservation of the 670 nm chlorophyll feature and chlorophyll red-edge was observed. A decrease in band depth of the 670 nm band ranging from ∼16 to 80% resulted, with correlations seen in the degree of preservation and the spatial proximity of samples to the spring mound and mineral shielding effects. The spectra were deconvolved to Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Pancam and Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Mastcam science filter bandpasses to investigate the detectability of the 670 nm feature and to compare with common mineral features. The red-edge and 670 nm feature associated with chlorophyll can be distinguished from the spectra of minerals with features below ∼1000 nm, such as hematite and jarosite. However, distinguishing goethite from samples with the chlorophyll feature is more problematic, and quantitative interpretation using band depth data makes little distinction between iron oxyhydroxides and the 670 nm chlorophyll feature. The chlorophyll spectral feature is observable in both Pancam and Mastcam, and we propose that of the proposed EXOMARS Pancam filters, the PHYLL filter is best suited for its detection.

The Mars Methane Analogue Mission simulates a micro-rover mission whose purpose is to detect, analyze, and determine the source of methane emissions on the planet's surface. As part of this project, both an electromagnetic induction sounder (EMIS) and a high-resolution triangulation-based 3D laser scanner were tested at the Jeffrey open-pit asbestos mine to identify and characterize geological environments favourable to the occurrence of methane. The presence of serpentinite in the form of chrysotile (asbestos), magnesium carbonate, and iron oxyhydroxides make the mine a likely location for methane production. The EMIS clearly delineated the contacts between the two geological units found at the mine, peridotite and slate, which are separated by a shear zone. Both the peridotite and slate units have low and uniform apparent electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility, while the shear zone has much higher conductivity and susceptibility, with greater variability. The EMIS data were inverted and the resulting model captured lateral conductivity variations through the different bedrock geological units buried beneath a gravel road. The 3D point cloud data acquired by the laser scanner were fitted with triangular meshes where steeply dipping triangles were plotted in dark grey to accentuate discontinuities. The resulting images were further processed using Sobel edge detection to highlight networks of fractures which are potential pathways for methane seepage.

Analysis of laboratory experiments simulating space weathering optical effects on atmosphereless planetary bodies reveals that the time needed to alter the spectrum of an ordinary chondrite meteorite to resemble the overall spectral shape and slope of an S-type asteroid is about ∼10 5 yr. The time required to reduce the visible albedo of samples to ∼0.05 is ∼10 6 yr. Since both these timescales are much less than the average collisional lifetime of asteroids larger than several kilometers in size, numerous low-albedo asteroids having reddish spectra with subdued absorption bands should be observed instead of an S-type dominated population. This is not the case because asteroid surfaces cannot be considered as undisturbed, unlike laboratory samples. We have estimated the number of collisions occurring in the time of ∼10 5 yr between asteroids and projectiles of various sizes and show that impact-activated motions of regolith particles counteract the progress of optical maturation of asteroid surfaces. We suppose that the maturation level of asteroid surfaces may be a compromise resulting from a competition between impact resurfacing and solar wind darkening, and that after reaching some steady state after a relatively short time (∼7 × 10 5 yr), thereafter depends only slightly on time. Spectroscopic analysis, using relatively invariant spectral parameters, such as band centers and band area ratios, can determine whether the surface of an S asteroid has chondritic composition or not. In this sense, the bodies with the ordinary chondrite composition cannot be masked among S asteroids. Differences in the environment of the main asteroid belt versus that at 1 AU, and the physical difference between the Moon and main belt asteroids (i.e., size) can account for the lack of lunar-type weathering on main belt asteroids.
