El terremoto de “Tabernes de 1396”, en el valle de la Valldigna, se ha considerado como uno de los mayores terremotos que se tiene registro en la Península Ibérica. La información utilizada para tales afirmaciones siempre ha partido de fuentes secundarias de la zona porque las originales se creían perdidas. En este trabajo, a partir de una copia recientemente editada, del libro de la historia del Real Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de la Valldigna, la “Historia Cronológica” del Padre Estevan Gil, se fija la fecha del 16 de diciembre en vez del 18 de diciembre para el terremoto principal y se reinterpretan los daños del terremoto, a partir de la fuente original. Además, se apunta la importancia del terremoto del 7 de noviembre de 1330 que supone la primera destrucción del cenobio. El libro original aporta información de la última destrucción de iglesia, en el terremoto de 1644, sus daños y la reconstrucción. Juntamente con otro libro, también recientemente editado de Tomás Gómez, sobre la visita castellana de 1666 nos permite descubrir como era el monasterio y entender los daños y las reconstrucciones. Por último, se mencionan otros dos terremotos en los años 1724 y 1748 que también aparecen reflejados en el libro del Padre Gil. The “1396 Tabernes” earthquake occurred in the Valldigna valley and it has been considered one of the largest Iberian Peninsula recorded earthquakes. The information used for such claims has always been from secondary sources in the area because the originals were believed to be lost. In this work, the recently edited copy of the book about the Royal Monastery Nuestra Señora de la Valldigna history, the “Chronological History” of Father Estevan Gil, has permitted to correct the date of December 16th instead of December 18th for the main earthquake. The earthquake damage is reinterpreted from the original source. In addition, the importance of the November 7th 1330 earthquake which represents the first destruction of the monastery, is pointed out. The original book provides information on the last destruction of the church in the 1644 earthquake, its damage and reconstruction. Together with another book, also recently published by Tomás Gómez, on the castilian visit of 1666, it allows us to discover what the monastery was like and understand the damage and reconstruction. Finally, two other earthquakes are mentioned in the years 1724 and 1748 that are also reflected in Father Gil’s book. The Tampanchi Ultramafic–Mafic Complex (TUMC), located in the central segment of the Cordillera Real (Ecuador), is an oval-shaped intrusive body of approximately 18 km2 emplaced within a Cretaceous metavolcano-sedimentary sequence. Field investigations, zircon geochronology, mineral and whole-rock elemental and isotopic compositions constrain the nature of the parental magma as well as the physical conditions of emplacement, age of crystallization and tectonic setting of formation of the TUMC. The Complex consist of wehrlite and olivine-hornblende clinopyroxenite crosscut by hornblende gabbros and minor dikes/veins of diorite and granite. Hornblendites formed mainly at the contact between the olivine-hornblende clinopyroxenite and the intrusive hornblende gabbros by reaction-replacement processes. Geochemical data for both the wehrlites and pyroxenites define a trend with dominantly olivine and clinopyroxene accumulation, whereas a second trend is formed by hornblende gabbros that differentiated to leucocratic rocks, with amphibole as the dominant fractionating mafic phase. The trace elements show enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements, depletion in high field strength elements (Nb, Zr, Ti) and P, and enrichment in Pb, Sr and Ba relative to primitive mantle, indicating subduction-related parental liquids. The Nd and Sr isotopic composition suggests a uniform mantle source metasomatized by subducted crustal components. Thermobarometric estimations constrain emplacement and crystallization at intermediate to shallow continental crust levels (∼12.5 km depth) of hydrated basaltic melt under oxygen fugacity conditions above the nickel-nickel oxide buffer (ΔNNO = 0 to 2). Zircon SHRIMP U-Th-Pb age data constrain crystallization at 75.1–76.0 Ma, with scarce inherited zircons that record limited recycling of the Cordillera Real basement. These results confirm magmatic arc activity at the continental margin of South America during the late Cretaceous as a result of an E-dipping subduction zone prior to the accretion of the Ecuadorian-Colombian-Caribbean oceanic plateau, and support simultaneous double subduction at the northwest margin of South America during the Cretaceous. Supplementary data to this article can be found online at https://doi. org/10.1016/j.marpetgeo.2023.106283, This paper introduces a methodology based on Python libraries and machine learning k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithms to create an interactive 3D HTML model (3D_Vertical_Sections_Faults_LRD.html) that combines 2D grain-size KNN-prediction vertical maps (vertical sections) from which syn-sedimentary faults and other features in sedimentary porous media can be delineated. The model can be visualized and handled with conventional web browsers. The grain-size physical parameter is measurable, constant over instrumental time, handleable math-ematically, and its range can be associated to lithological classes. Grain-size input data comes from a public database of 433 boreholes in the Llobregat River Delta (LRD) in NE Spain. Four lithological classes were defined: Pre-Quaternary basement, and Quaternary gravel, sand, and clay-silt. Using a new KNN-prediction algorithm, seven NW-SE (transversal) and three SW-NE (longitudinal) vertical sections were created following the orien-tation of faults identified in surface and detected in reflection seismic geophysical surveys. For exploratory K values in the 1-75 range were used. K around 25 provides the general and smoothy shape of the basement top surface, whereas K =1 is a optimal value to represent the heterogeneity of the LRD at short distance. Using a new KNN-prediction confidence algorithm inspired in the Similarity Ratio algorithm for machine-learning KNN, the vertical sections overall confidence was evaluated as satisfactory. A general decreasing confidence trend ac-cording to the decreasing data density with depth and from inland to seaward was found. The vertical sections created with K = 1 show horizontal interruptions (displacements or vertical steps) in the basement continuity and in the Quaternary coarse bodies (gravel and sand) attributable to the action of Quaternary active faults. These faults have been linked or correlated with well-known active faults in the area related in much cases with the Valencia Trough opening. Moreover, several faults detected in surface and other identified in this paper by the first time have been revealed as fault zones made of fault branches with different steps in an echelon-like arrangement. Faulting seems to be more evident in the Pleistocene Lower Detrital Complex and much less active or inactive in the Holocene Upper Detrital Complex. Syn-tectonic gravel channels faulty controlled, progradation of gravel lobes, and lateral migration of channel bars were also observed. At its current develop-ment stage, this methodology could also be applied to other geological environments, making the due minor modifications of the code, and is especially suitable to reduce the high (usually unmeasurable) uncertainty associated to the qualitative geological data used in more complex numerical tools aimed at modelling a lot of geological resources (groundwater, minerals, geothermal, petroleum) or different Earth phenomena., Spanish Government PID2020-114381 GB-I00, Generalitat Valenciana from Alicante University (CTMA-IGA)

The widely debated late Oligocene-middle Miocene Numidian Fm (NF) consists of supermature quartzose sediments deposited in the Maghrebian Flysch Basin (MFB) outcropping from the Betic Cordillera to the Southern Apennine passing by the Maghrebian Chain. The NF is commonly composed of three lithostratigraphic members and is characterized by two vertical successions (Type A and Type B) corresponding to different sedimentation areas in the MFB. It is noteworthy the occurrence of widespread lateral successions of the NF (Types C, D and E) indicating in some cases an interference of the Numidian sedimentation with other different depositional systems and supplies. The Type C ‘Mixed Successions’, deposited in depocentre areas, are composed of supermature Numidian supply interfingering with immature siliciclastic materials, coming from the internal portion of the MFB. The Type D consists of supermature Numidian materials supplied from the Africa Margin (external sub-domains) deposited in sub-basins on the Africa-Adria margins, outside the typical Numidian depositional area. The Type E, which stratigraphically overlies both the South Iberian Margin (SIM) and the Mesomediterranean Microplate (MM), represents the migration of the Numidian depositional system to reach the opposite margins of the MFB. The occurrence at a regional scale of all the above-mentioned lateral successions reveals a great evolutionary complexity resulting also from further constraints, which must be considered for palaeogeographic and palaeotectonic reconstructions. Another important point deals with the diachronism of the top of the NF, observed eastward from the Betic-Rifian Arc and the Algerian-Tunisian Tell (Burdigalian p.p.) to Sicily (Langhian p.p.) and up to the Southern Apennine (at least Langhian/Serravallian boundary) which can be related with eastwards delay in the MFB closure. The palaeogeographic reconstruction of the Numidian depositional area presented in this paper, which is also included into a global kinematic model, represents a first attempt to use the software GPlates for this subject. A novel unconventional pseudostatic analysis is proposed here to infer on the sensitivity of a landslide to earthquakes characterized by different physical properties. Several sine waves with different amplitudes, frequencies and phases were applied to the landslide mass assuming limit equilibrium conditions. The unconventional approach was used for the Diezma landslide case study. The landslide is located 25 km from the city of Granada (Spain). Although the slope had repeatedly suffered small-scale stability problems since the construction of the A-92 highway, a larger failure occurred on 18 March 2001 and damaged the highway between kilometers 272.6 and 272.8. The landslide had an estimated volume of 1.2 Mm3 and involved a disordered deposit of silt and clay with heterometric blocks within the Numidoide Formation, which outcrops along the contact between the Malaguide and Dorsal domains of the Betic Cordillera mountain range. Despite the 18 million Euros spent since 1999 on geotechnical investigations and stabilization solutions, the numerous reactivations that occurred through 2010 and 2013 demonstrate the persistent activity of the landslide. The geometry of the large slope failure corresponding to the first activation of the Diezma landslide was used to back-analyze the stability of the slope based on a high-resolution engineering-geological model. The model was developed from the analysis of numerous borehole logs as well as from geophysical investigations consisting of seismic noise measurements. The results demonstrate that the safety factor (SF) of the Diezma landslide varies significantly for frequencies less than 1 Hz; moreover, unstable conditions are reached at frequency values between 0.5 and 1 Hz for water pressure distributions corresponding to Bishop factors (ru) between 0 and 0.36. To estimate the co-seismic displacements, the geometrical and mechanical properties of the landslide mass were used to derive its characteristic periods for thickness (Ts) and length (Tl), which were compared with the characteristic period of the earthquake (Tm). The results indicate that the maximum expected co-seismic displacements are up to 2 m for an earthquake with a Tm value close to 1 s and an Arias Intensity on the order of 1 m/s.

In the External Zones of the Betic Cordillera (S Spain), upper Muschelkalk (Ladinian) facies have been known for decades; however, so far there is no stratigraphic record of Anisian deposits. In the present study, new biostratigraphic data from a carbonate succession in the easternmost Subbetic domain reveal a Pelsonian-Illyrian (Anisian) age. The nautiloids Germanonautilus salinarius and Germanonautilus saharonicus are documented for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula, and together with the brachiopod Tetractinella trigonella and the bivalves Neoschizodus orbicularis and Myophoria vulgaris they represent marker fossils of Anisian deposits previously described from many other basins, both in the Germanic and Alpine realms. The co-occurrence of the nautiloid G. saharonicus and the bivalve Gervillia joleaudi at the top of the studied succession serves as correlation tool for the first faunal migration event from the Sephardic towards the Subbetic domain. The palynomorph assemblage, including the monosaccate pollen grain Cristianisporites triangulatus, provides further evidence of a late Anisian age. An integrated study of fossil assemblages and sedimentary facies reveals tidal and very shallow-marine environments that characterize an extensive epicontinental platform in the western Tethys along the paleo-margin of the Iberian Massif. Two thin shale intervals represent two distinct transgressive phases, correlative to the Pelsonian maximum-flooding zone recorded in other European basins. The new findings contribute to the ongoing paleogeographic reconstruction of epicontinental platform settings which developed during the Middle Triassic in the Peri-Tethyan realm. This study presents a new geochemical, petrological, and geochronological U-Pb dataset from Ediacaran metabasites and associated rocks of the Canigó and Cap de Creus massifs, Eastern Pyrenees. Metabasites are composed of calcic amphibole + plagioclase + chlorite + epidote ± quartz plus titanite + apatite + ilmenite ± biotite ± rutile as accessory phases and show relict igneous textures. Peak pressure-temperature determinations share common conditions, ranging 452-482ºC and 5.2-7.7kbar, which suggest Barrovian-type metamorphism, most likely related to a collisional setting. CO2 exchange between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere is key to understanding the feedbacks between climate change and the land surface. In regions with carbonaceous parent material, CO2 exchange patterns occur that cannot be explained by biological processes, such as disproportionate outgassing during the daytime or nighttime CO2 uptake during periods when all vegetation is senescent. Neither of these phenomena can be attributed to carbonate weathering reactions, since their CO2 exchange rates are too small. Soil ventilation induced by high atmospheric turbulence is found to explain atypical CO2 exchange between carbonaceous systems and the atmosphere. However, by strongly altering subsurface CO2 concentrations, ventilation can be expected to influence carbonate weathering rates. By imposing ventilation-driven CO2 outgassing in a carbonate weathering model, we show here that carbonate geochemistry is accelerated and does play a surprisingly large role in the observed CO2 exchange pattern of a semi-arid ecosystem. We found that by rapidly depleting soil CO2 during the daytime, ventilation disturbs soil carbonate equilibria and therefore strongly magnifies daytime carbonate precipitation and associated CO2 production. At night, ventilation ceases and the depleted CO2 concentrations increase steadily. Dissolution of carbonate is now enhanced, which consumes CO2 and largely compensates for the enhanced daytime carbonate precipitation. This is why only a relatively small effect on global carbonate weathering rates is to be expected. On the short term, however, ventilation has a drastic effect on synoptic carbonate weathering rates, resulting in a pronounced diel pattern that exacerbates the non-biological behavior of soil–atmosphere CO2 exchanges in dry regions \mbox{with carbonate soils}., M. Rotations of large-scale crustal blocks deduced from paleomagnetism are usually invoked to support evolutionary tectonic models in orogens. However, the regional representativeness of local paleomagnetic rotations strongly depends on the structural context and can lead to conflicting results. This work analyzes an unusual cluster of almost coeval lamproite dikes (9.3–7.1 Ma) intruded along a 25 km-long segment of the Socovos transpressive fault zone in the Eastern Betics, with a view to determine rotations at the metre-scale. This fault zone has contrasting deformation styles, depending on the rheology of the rocks, which vary from ductile evaporites (gypsum) to brittle carbonates. The volcanic and subvolcanic rocks present a primary acquisition of high quality natural remanent magnetization, which defines a single directional component with very narrow α95. Matching the outcrop scale structures with the apparently dispersed paleomagnetic directions in the fault zone allows us to differentiate four deformational domains with distinctive characteristics: (1) a brittle zone with deformation concentrated in planes that bound blocks with no rotation or rotations below the expected secular variation ( ± 16º in inclination and ± 21º declination); (2) transpressive decametre-scale duplexes or single horses, also limited by brittle faults, where inclined axis rotations below 60º occur as rigid blocks; (3) buckling folds in ductile units associated with local reverse faulting; and (4), a triclinic transpressive ductile shear zone affecting a gypsum layer, where volcanic boudins have a rotation that is the sum of folding parallel to the shear zone walls plus an angular shear of 36º. These paleomagnetic results indicate that fault displacement continues after 7 Ma with the same kinematics as previously. Besides regional findings, this study illustrates the potential usefulness of small-scale paleomagnetic analysis for determining strain partitioning and deformation mode along large and complex transpressive fault zones, as well as the necessity to know the local structure to attribute regional meaning to the paleomagnetic rotation data. A U-Pb zircon date of ~113 Ma revealed that a variety of jadeitites and related omphacitite, chloritite and albite-rich rocks from the subduction-related Sierra del Convento block-in-serpentinite-matrix mélange (eastern Cuba) formed nearly synchronously with MORB metabasite-derived anatectic trondhjemitic liquids at high-temperature and pressure in a hot subduction environment. Field, petrologic and geochemical data indicate hydrothermal/metasomatic processes triggered by juvenile fluids likely evolved from the crystallizing hydrous trondhjemitic melts. These fluids, variably mixed with sediment-derived fluids and channelized along fractures in the supra-slab mantle, precipitated relatively pure jadeitite with geochemical patterns depleted in REE and HFSE and epidote-rich jadeitite with LILE- (notably Ba) enriched compositions with respect to N-MORB. The crystallization of jadeitite veins was accompanied by formation of chloritite blackwalls at the vein-ultramafic rock contact and omphacititic patches at the outer parts of the veins, denoting wall rock-fluid interactions. Further pervasive flow of external fluid within the rock bodies triggered modal and cryptic (geochemical) metasomatic transformation of earlier jadeitite, producing mica-rich jadeitite and albite-epidote (-chlorite) rocks. Altogether these rocks document a discrete episode of massive flow of fluid in the supra-slab mantle roughly coeval with hydrous melting of subducted MORB metabasite., We are grateful for Alfred Kroner's inspiration and advice. Here, we report the recent discovery of 87 Neandertal footprints on the Southwest of the Iberian Peninsula (Doñana shoreline, Spain) located on an upper Pleistocene aeolian littoral setting (about 106 ± 19 kyr). Morphometric comparisons, high resolution digital photogrammetric 3D models and detailed sedimentary analysis have been provided to characterized the footprints and the palaeoenvironment. The footprints were impressed in the shoreline of a hypersaline swamped area related to benthic microbial mats, close to the coastline. They have a rounded heel, a longitudinal arch, relatively short toes, and adducted hallux, and represent the oldest upper Pleistocene record of Neandertal footprints in the world. Among these 87 footprints, 31 are longitudinally complete and measure from 14 to 29 cm. The calculated statures range from 104 to 188 cm, with half of the data between 130 and 150 cm. The wide range of sizes of the footprints suggests the existence of a social group integrated by individuals of diferent age classes but dominated, however, by non-adult individuals. The footprints, which are outside the fooded area are oriented perpendicular to the shoreline. These 87 footprints reinforce the ecological scenario of Neandertal groups established in coastal areas.

The Cenozoic sedimentary cover from the Ghomaride Complex (Internal Rif Belt) has been studied in the Tetuan area (N Morocco) where a suite of sedimentary successions from shallow-marine to deep-marine environments crops out. For that purpose stratigraphic relations and petrological and geochemical signatures have been analyzed. Sandstone suites of the overall succession are heterogeneous and testify a multi-source area, in response of accretionary processes of the Ghomaride-Maláguide units and the exhumation of the lower units of the Internal Rif Zone (e.g. Sebtide-Alpujárride Complex). Pre-orogenic and Syn-orogenic (according to the eoalpine phase) deposits have been identified consisting in two depositional sequences: lower Paleocene and Cuisian-Bartonian, and upper Oligocene-upper Aquitanian and lower Burdigalian, respectively. Pre-orogenic deposits are mainly intra-arenite and hybrid arenites made of a minor amount of siliciclastic detritus but with abundance of intrabasinal carbonate grains. The syn-orogenic sandstone suites are quartzolithic, having abundance of low-grade metamorphic and sedimentary lithic fragments. Sedimentary lithic fragments are derived from the Mesozoic successions of the Ghomaride-Maláguide Complex while metamorphic detritus is related to an unknow Internal Rif Zone basement that was exhumed starting from the late Oligocene and mainly early Miocene. Modal analyses of sandstone suites for the extrabasinal grains mainly indicate lower rank metamorphic and sedimentary source terranes of a recycled orogen. Major and trace elements coupled to the mineralogical composition of the mudrock samples indicate a provenance from felsic source area(s) with a minor but not negligible contribution from mafic rocks mainly in the syn-orogenic suites. Geochemical analyses (Al–Ti–Zr ternary plot) indicate minor reworking and recycling processes before the final deposition through prolonged processes of sedimentary transportation. The trends evident in both CIA and CIA’ diagrams indicate source areas characterized by moderate weathering in non-steady-state conditions with a weak change of weathering condition from the pre-orogenic to the syn-orogenic cycle. Deposition during the Paleocene and Eocene, took place in the southern continental margin of the Ghomaride-Malaguide domain as a carbonate ramp. Contrarily, sedimentation in the late Oligocene-late Aquitanian took place in wedge-top basins within the Ghomaride-Malaguide domain. These changes occurred during the Burdigalian, when back arc basins were developed in the Internal Betic-Rif Zone. The Cenozoic reconstructed record was contemporaneous of the structuring of the Circum-Mediterranean chains and the Ghomaride-Maláguide Complex played a key role in the geodynamic evolution of the Rif Cordillera, representing a key tectonic element of the western Mesomediterranean domains. This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited., Understanding the fluctuations in cave air concentrations and their climatic control is substantial not only to preserve the quality of indoor atmospheres but also to avoid the risk related to the presence of hazardous substances. In this study, we investigated the most influential factors affecting 222Rn and CO2 concentrations, the nature of their dynamics, and their coupling with climatic variations. For this purpose, we combined a set of mathematical methods that included a statistical and wavelet analysis of a 6-year time series in Rull Cave (Spain). Generally, the 222Rn and CO2 dynamic in cave air showed similar patterns. However, the obtained results show that these gases have a different frequency response. Thus, the annual component of 222Rn and CO2 is controlled by the relationship between external and internal temperatures. At low frequencies, both gases are affected by the same variables when the cave atmosphere reaches a minimum concentration. However, when the cave atmosphere is isolated from the outdoors, 222Rn and CO2 behave differently and disturbance caused by the visitors is evidenced in terms of the CO2 concentration; the latter observation was confirmed by the wavelet analysis at high frequencies. This research explores the Messinian record in a western Mediterranean basin at the eastern end of the Betic Cordillera (the Garruchal section, southern sector of the Bajo Segura basin). Sedimentary facies development and foraminiferal assemblages were used as palaeoenvironmental proxies to characterize the palaeoceanographic evolution of the basin’s progressive restriction. Therefore, a succession of palaeoenvironmental phases can be established as follows. The “start phase” (until ~ 6.72 Ma) records the first ecological evidence of the restriction, evidenced by the sudden appearance of common benthic stress markers. The “amplification phase” of the restriction (up to ~ 6.35 Ma) marks a progressive increase in low bottom oxygen levels related to water-mass stratification in the evolution from upper epibathyal to outer shelf environments. The “consolidation phase” (until the intra-Messinian discontinuity ~ shortly after 6.03 Ma) records basin shallowing (from outer to inner shelf environments) in a context of a restricted basin. And lastly, the “climax phase” (until the end-Messinian discontinuity) records coastal sedimentation (marine coastal lagoon and sandy beaches). The findings of this research reveal that the Garruchal section is a good illustration of the sedimentary and palaeoenvironmental response of the peripheral basins to the progressive restriction of the Mediterranean before the Messinian Salinity Crisis. Finally, since it is widely accepted that the Mediterranean marine restriction has been developed in a stepwise mode, we here propose to establish the following terms for implementation at Mediterranean regional level: “start,” “amplification,” and “consolidation” phases, which finally led to the “climax” phase, that is, the Messinian Salinity Crisis stricto sensu. New field observations and petrological data from Early Cretaceous metamorphic rocks in the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes allowed the recognition of thermally overprinted high-pressure rocks derived from oceanic crust protoliths. The obtained metamorphic path suggests that the rocks evolved from blueschist to eclogite facies towards upper amphibolite to high-pressure granulite facies transitional conditions. Eclogite facies conditions, better recorded in mafic protoliths, are revealed by relic lawsonite and phengite, bleb- to worm-like diopside-albite symplectites, as well as garnet core composition. Upper amphibolite to high pressure granulite facies overprinting is supported by coarse-grained brown-colored Ti-rich amphibole, augite, and oligoclase recrystallization, as well as the record of partial melting leucosomes. Phase equilibria and pressure-temperature (P-T) path modeling suggest initial high-pressure metamorphic conditions M1 yielding 18.2–24.5 kbar and 465–580 °C, followed by upper amphibolite to high pressure granulite facies overprinting stage M2 yielding 6.5–14.2 kbar and 580–720 °C. Retrograde conditions M3 obtained through chlorite thermometry yield temperatures ranging around 286–400 °C at pressures below 6.5–11 kbar. The obtained clockwise P-T path, the garnet zonation pattern revealing a decrease in Xgrs/Xprp related to Mg# increment from core to rim, the presence of partial melting veins, as well as regional constraints, document the modification of the thermal structure of the active subduction zone in Northern Andes during the Early Cretaceous. Such increment of the metamorphic gradient within the subduction interface is associated with slab roll-back geodynamics where hot mantle inflow was triggered. This scenario is also argued by the reported trench-ward magmatic arc migration and multiple extensional basin formation during this period. The presented example constitutes the first report of Cretaceous roll-back-related metamorphism in the Caribbean and Andean realms, representing an additional piece of evidence for a margin-scale extensional event that modified the northwestern border of South America during the Early Cretaceous. This study combines published isotope data (223 samples) with new data (153 samples) on the δ34S and δ18O composition of Ca-sulfate rocks (anhydrite and secondary gypsum) accumulated in eastern Iberia during the Middle Triassic to Early Jurassic. The δ34S mean values of the evaporite units reveal the following trends: a decrease from the lower Anisian (~18‰) to the Carnian-Norian interval (~15‰); an increase at the Rhaetian (~16‰); a decrease in the Hettangian-Sinemurian interval (~14‰); and finally an increasing trend from the Sinemurian-Pliensbachian (~16‰) to the Pliensbachian-Toarcian (~19‰). This δ34S isotope assemblage together with the generalized low standard deviations observed for the different evaporite units is consistent, and suggests that the isotope composition of these Ca-sulfates are primary signatures related to feeding marine water sulfate. Depending on the evaporite units, these δ34S mean values are, nevertheless, ~1‰ to ~3‰ lower than those reported for coeval Triassic evaporites of the Germanic basin and the Alp-Apennine domains. In eastern Iberia, the δ18O values are more variable and also display wider scatters than the corresponding δ34S values. Of particular interest in our study are: (i) the low δ34S values for the Anisian in comparison with those in the Germanic basin; (ii) the shift to heavier values in the Rhaetian, recorded for first time in the evaporites of eastern Iberia; (iii) the low values observed for the Hettangian, which suggest that the change to the heavier values of the Jurassic (~19‰) occurred after the end-Hettangian in eastern Iberia; and (iv) the affinity of the δ34S values recorded for the Hettangian-Sinemurian interval to those known for the Canadian domain. We excavated trenches at two paleoseismic sites bounding a trans-basin bedrock ridge (the Willow Creek Hills) along the northern Lost River fault zone to explore the uniqueness of the 1983 Mw 6.9 Borah Peak earthquake compared to its prehistoric predecessors. At the Sheep Creek site on the southernmost Warm Springs section, two earthquakes occurred at 9.8–14.0 ka (95% confidence) and 6.5–7.1 ka; each had ~1.9 m of vertical displacement. About 4 km to the southeast, across the Willow Creek Hills, two ruptures at the Arentson Gulch site on the northernmost Thousand Springs section occurred at 9.0–14.7 ka and 6.1–7.5 ka with ~1.9 m of vertical displacement each. This paper provides an understanding of the sedimentary-tectonic evolution of the Cenozoic strata of the El Habt and Ouezzane Tectonic Units (Intrarif, External Rif) in Morocco. New data provide information about the depositional architecture and enable a correlation of the evolution of the External Rif in Morocco with that of the Betic Cordillera in Spain and the Tunisian Tell, which provides new insights for hydrocarbon exploration in the region regarding possible source, reservoir, and seal rocks. The reconstructed Cenozoic succession was bio-chronologically defined, and the major unconformities and stratigraphic gaps were identified. The presence of these unconformities allowed three main stratigraphic sequences to be defined by age: Danian p.p., early Ypresian–early Bartonian p.p., and the early Rupelian–early Serravallian p.p. Three secondary stratigraphic sequences in the former upper main sequence were also defined by age: early Rupelian–late Chattian p.p., Burdigalian p.p., and the Langhian–Serravallian p.p. The depositional setting evolved from deep basin during the Late Cretaceous–Paleocene to external platform-slope during the Eocene–Miocene. The Cenozoic sandstones contain metamorphic and sedimentary rock fragments derived from a recycled orogen source area. The clay mineralogy in the Cenozoic strata consists of associations of Ill+(I–S) ± Sme, Ill+(I–S) ± Sme+Kln and Ill+(I–S) ± Sme+- Kln+Chl. These associations indicate an initial unroofing in the Paleogene period, then in the Cretaceous period, and finally in the Late Jurassic period during the Eocene–Oligocene. This detritus was followed by variable amounts of a sedimentary mix of Paleogene to Late Jurassic terrains due to several phases of erosion and deposition partly related to syn-sedimentary tectonics during the Miocene. Equivalent features (similar types of sediments, tectofacies, gaps, and unroofing) were also recognized along the Betic Cordillera in Spain and Maghrebian Chain (Morocco and Tunisia) and interpreted as related to a pre-nappe tectonic activity of soft basement folding, which occurred during the Paleogene after the generalized tectonic inversion (from extension to compression) occurred in the Late Cretaceous. The Upper Cretaceous is considered to be the hydrocarbon source rock, while the fractured Eocene and the porous Oligo-Miocene suites are proposed as possible hydrocarbon reservoirs. The Cenozoic stratigraphic architecture and the nappe structure of the region could provide the necessary trap structures. The Paleogene evolution of theNWmargin of the African Plate (Western External Rif Zone)was studied by means of multidisciplinary analyses of twenty-one stratigraphic logs, including tectofacies recognition, petro-mineralogical results, and thicknesses analysis. Four stratigraphic intervals were recognized separated by three unconformities coarsely aligned with the Cretaceous–Paleogene, Eocene–Oligocene and Oligocene–Miocene boundaries, respectively. Tectofacies appear from the late Ypresian being more frequents from the Oligocene as the tectonic activity increases. The petrology of detrital suites indicates recycled orogen-derived sediments, with quartz supplied from metamorphic rocks of the Atlas orogen and/or the African craton. On the basis ofMesozoic claymineral assemblages reported in the literature, the clay mineralogy of mudstones suggests upper Jurassic to upper Cretaceous terrains from the Internal Intrarif as the main source area of the Paleocene–Eocene successions, with sediment provenance reversion during the Oligocene and additional contribution of Paleocene to lower Eocene suites. The different displacement capability of the identified aluminic-magnesic claymineralogy enabled to deduce the relative proximity of the source area. These findings point out a complex sedimentary evolution characterized by a mixture of different lithotypes dating back to upper Jurassic. X-ray parameters helped to identify evidences of synsedimentary tectonics overprinting the inheritedmineralogy during some periods with weak burial diagenesis at most. During the Paleogene a foreland basin is formed mainly in theMesorif and Prerif sub-domains. This foredeep was represented by two ‘sub-geosynclines’ separated by a relative bulge located in the ExternalMesorif. The Internal Intrarif could represent the relative orogenic front, advancing on the External Intrarif. The Eocene forebulge was located in the Ridges Domain, while the Gharb Basin was the backbulge of the system. During the Oligocene the depocentral area migrated southward and a homogeneization of thicknesses took also place in thewholemargin. In this newconfiguration, the foredeep would be located in the External Mesorif (previously a relative bulge) while the Ridges Domain and the Gharb Basin continued to act as the systemforebulge and backbulge, respectively. A comparisonwith the Paleogene evolution of otherwestern Tethys externalmargins (Betic Chain, Tunisian Tell, SicilianMaghrebids, and Apennines) has revealed more similarities than differences. The effects of the Eo-Alpine tectonics are recognized everywhere even if they decrease both from N to S, and fromWto E in the different considered margins. The evolution of the compared margins shows a common pre-foredeed (Paleocene-Eocene) and beginning of foredeep (Oligocene) stages in the foreland basins., PID2020-114381GB-I00 research project (Spanish Ministry of Education and Science).

The Meymand world heritage site (Kerman Province, Iran) is a rock-hewn village carved within a pyroclastic rock mass, Meymand Tuff. This site, having an ancient local population with an age of 2000 years, is hosted by a weak rock exposed to deterioration and weathering processes. However, our understanding of the characteristics of the Meymand Tuff is limited to some previous general studies. Therefore, in the present study, the stratigraphy and intrinsic characteristics of the Meymand tuff are investigated to determine its weathering behavior and durability. For this purpose, comprehensive field and laboratory investigations were carried out. The stratigraphy of the valley and the pyroclastic flows that had deposited the Meymand tuff were identified and outlined based on field investigations and many surveyed sections along the Meymand valley. Next, the mineralogical composition, texture, structure, physical and mechanical properties, water absorption rate, slake durability, wetting–drying durability, shrinkage potential of the fine portion, and collapse potential of the Meymand tuff were assessed through laboratory investigations. The results revealed that two pyroclastic flows had deposited the host tuff rocks of the Meymand site. These rocks have a heterogeneous texture comprising very coarse-grained clasts to the fine-grained matrix. Rock characteristics including heterogeneous texture, high porous and open structure, clay-rich mineralogical composition, high water absorption capacity, and swelling and shrinkage potential of the fine portion of the matrix have resulted in adverse behaviors in Meymand tuff. These behaviors are pertained to the strength softening, weight loss, and deterioration at wetting drying cycles. A recent model of continental arc magmatism states that subducted sediments mix physically with the oceanic slab basalts in the subduction channel and produce diapirs that ascend through the mantle wedge, undergo melting and relaminate to the base of the continental crust. From here, melt or magma batches ascend through the crust, producing the Cordilleran batholiths and associated volcanism ranging in composition from 0 to 25 wt% maficity (FeOt + MgO) and 44–79 wt% SiO2, with a gap around 11.5 wt% maficity and 57–60 wt% SiO2. This model has been predicted by thermomechanical numerical studies and later supported by phase equilibrium experiments; however, thermodynamic modelling to verify whether the composition of the Cordilleran batholiths is reproduced by this model has not yet been carried out to complement the experimental approach. In this article, the evolution of the mélange along the subduction path and during the ascent of the diapirs is investigated, with focus on the conditions of generation of the diapirs, the composition and proportion of melt at the P-T conditions of relamination of the diapirs, the relationship between the basalt:sediment proportion (the composition) of the diapir to this melt composition and proportion and whether the composition of the melts match the Cordilleran batholiths. The key point to test is the process or processes that produce the compositional variability observed in these granitoids. Our findings indicate that (1) parental melts and/or magmas range in maficity from ∼1 to ∼11.5 wt%, with the compositional gap of the Cordilleran trend representing the most mafic composition possible of the parent, (2) the diapirs are restricted to having 50–60% of sediment component: diapirs with lower sediment contents may be too dense to detach from the slab and mélanges with higher sediment contents may be too less dense to be subducted to the depth of formation of diapirs, (3) melts at 1100 °C and 1.5 GPa from these diapirs have the bulk granodioritic composition of the batholiths, (4) restite unmixing occurs when magma batches segregate from the relaminated diapirs, (5) the lower the temperature of the region of the diapir from which the batch segregates, the higher the restite content, (6) the temperature, by controlling the restite content, is the ultimate factor controlling the compositional trends of Cordilleran batholiths, and (7) fractional crystallization or cotectic evolution is still needed to account for the full compositional range of these batholiths, from the parental 1–11.5 wt% to the observed 0–25 wt% in maficity. This paper applies remote sensing techniques and 3D point cloud (3DPC) analysis to the study of historical quarries and the relationship between old quarry landscapes and the natural fracture systems of rock massifs. Ancient quarry landscapes present particular characteristics and different features from those of modern quarries. Consequently, specific considerations are needed when historical extractive places are studied. The proposed method is based on terrestrial 3D laser scanners and the structure from motion technique with remotely piloted aircraft systems. Additional specific fieldwork is required to identify and characterise quarry faces from old, blurry outcrops. A case study of the 18th century “Rambla Honda” quarries in La Romana (Alicante, SE Spain) is presented. The comparison between the fieldwork and 3DPC analysis enables the numbers and orientations of both (1) the discontinuity sets within the rock mass facilitating extraction and (2) the planes resulting from block extraction (traditional quarry faces) to be determined. The comparative analysis reveals how the stonecutters managed the extraction. The results show that structural and stratigraphic discontinuities act as planes of weakness for block extraction and determine the optimum orientation of the quarry face for minimising efforts and rock waste. The final quarry landscape is formed from the superposition of natural and artificial surfaces, but currently they appear eroded and partially covered by silting and plants. The proposed methodology contributes to distinguishing both natural and artificial discontinuities and to achieving a comprehensive knowledge of these cultural places. Located in northern Dominican Republic, the Early Cretaceous Rio Boba mafic-ultramafic plutonic sequence constitutes a lower crust section of the Caribbean island arc, made up by gabbroic rocks and subordinate pyroxenite. Modal compositions, mineral chemistry, whole-rock compositions and thermobarometric calculations indicate that pyroxenites and gabbronorites represent a cumulate sequence formed by fractionation of tholeiitic magmas with initially very low H2O content in the lower crust of the arc (0.6-0.8 GPa). Melts evolved along a simplified crystallization sequence of olivine  pyroxenes  plagioclase  Fe-Ti oxides. The magmatic evolution of the Rio Boba sequence and associated supra-crustal Puerca Gorda metavolcanic rocks is multi-stage and involves the generation of magmas from melting of different sources in a supra-subduction zone setting. The first stage included the formation of a highly depleted substrate as result of decompressional melting of a refractory mantle source, represented by a cumulate sequence of LREE-depleted IAT and boninitic gabbronorites and pyroxenites. The second stage involved volumetrically subordinate cumulate troctolites and gabbros, which are not penetratively deformed. The mantle source was refractory and enriched by a LILE-rich hydrous fluid derived from a subducting slab and/or overlying sediments, and possibly by a LREE-rich melt. The third stage is recorded in the upper crust of the arc by the Puerca Gorda ‘normal’ IAT protoliths, which are derived from an N-MORB mantle source enriched with a strong subduction component. The changing nature of detrital signatures in clastic wedges of the Circum-Mediterranean orogenic systems reflect the provenance relations from different source rocks of evolving geo-puzzle terranes, including ophiolite bearing, uplifted continental crust (both shallow to deep crust terranes), volcanic and sedimentary source rocks. We selected here sandstone suites directly occurring over the Mesomediterranean Micropaleoplate during the final stages of closure of the western-southern Tethyan realm. They are unconformably over the internal domains of the Circum-Mediterranean thrust belts, and include Oligocene-to-lower Miocene siliciclastic formations of the Betic Cordillera (As, Bosque, Río Pliego, El Niño, Ciudad Granada, Fuente-Espejos, Alozaina and Viñuela fms), Rif Chain (Fnideq and Sidi Abdeslam fms), and Calabrian terranes (Paludi, Pignolo and Stilo Capo d'Orlando fms). All these sandstone suites range from quartzolitic to quartzofeldspathic detrital modes reflecting close relations with their Paleozoic metasedimentary and plutonic source rocks and their related Mesozoic sedimentary covers. Marked differences have been recognized from western (Betic-Rif) to eastern (Calabria) portions in terms of detritic suites. Detrital suites of the Betic-Rif portions reflect a transition between a craton, transitional and recycled orogenic provenance type. Contrarily, detrital suites of the Calabria portions reflect their transition from transitional continental to basement uplift orogenic provenance reflecting deposition in wedge-top basins during final subduction of the MFB below the MM and the opening of the Mediterranean basin as a backarc. Exotic blocks of massive antigorite-serpentinite (antigoritite) document a deep-seated subduction channel in the Villa Clara serpentinite-matrix m ́elange, central Cuba. The petrological and geochemical characteristics of antigoritite allow distinguishing two types of rock: i) antigoritite and ii) dolomite-bearing antigoritite. Both types are intimately related in field exposures and represent deep peridotite infiltrated by H2O-CO2 fluid mixtures that triggered antigoritization and local carbonation. Fluid infiltration continued after antigoritization forming a vein network as a potential response to hydrofracturing that precipitated tremolitite in the veins and triggered fluid- antigoritite reaction forming blackwalls. The mineralogical and chemical zoning in the blackwalls (Atg + Chl + Tr adjacent to antigoritite and Chl + Tr adjacent to the tremolitite vein) attest for multi-step metasomatic processes during fluid-rock interaction characterized by advection of infiltrating fluid towards the blackwall and, possibly, by diffusion out of the blackwall towards the fluid-filled vein. Tentative thermodynamic modeling of the blackwall domain Atg + Chl + Tr points vein network formation at 400–500 ◦C and 5–10 kbar during exhumation in the subduction channel, suggesting the infiltration of deep-seated pressurized fluid that triggered hydrofracturing. The Hamutenha intrusion (Huíla province, SW Angola) is a 3-km-long elongated magmatic body defined by a set of two intrusive units. The northern unit is formed by alternating bands of dunites and olivine gabbros, while the southern unit is composed of amphibole diorites. The Hamutenha body is hosted by the Paleoproterozoic Epupa Complex in the Angolan Shield, SW margin of the Congo Craton. A mineralogical, petrological and geochemical study of the Hamutenha intrusion has been performed. The constrained compositional features of the parental melt suggest interaction of tholeiitic magmas with a significant enrichment in Fe and Ti. Although disseminated Fe–Ni–Cu-(Co) secondary sulphides are observed, both the crustal contamination parameters and generally low bulk-rock metals contents indicate that these elements were most likely previously extracted from the parental melt. U–Pb zircon dating of amphibole diorite samples from the southern unit yields a date of 1844 ± 14 Ma. These data suggest that the emplacement of these rocks was previous to the KC emplacement and it was probably related to the Paleoproterozoic Epupa Complex magmatism. The lower part of the Lower Cretaceous Bolos Sandstone Formation as exposed in the Barranco de la Muela section (Sierra de la Muela Range, southeastern Spain) yields two species of ornamented nautiloids, Cymatoceras neocomiense and Eucymatoceras plicatum. These have been collected together with other cephalopods (ammonoids, belemnites) and different invertebrates (corals, brachiopods, bivalves, gastropods, echinoids). This fossil assemblage includes numerous large macroconchs of the ammonite Pseudothurmannia mortilleti, here considered as a senior synonym of P. catulloi, index species of the homonymous subzone of the upper Hauterivian “Pseudothurmannia ohmi” Zone. On this basis, the here reported findings constitute the first biostratigraphically well-constrained records of C. neocomiense and E. plicatum, namely in the Pseudothurmannia catulloi Subzone. The presence of these two ornamented and relatively depressed nautiloids in fine sandstone levels interbedded with sandy marls of the Bolos Formation, together with the palaeoecological characteristics of the associated fauna suggest a nearshore to inner-middle shelf, shallow to moderately deep palaeoenvironment with mixed siliciclastic-carbonate sedimentation, and high to moderate energy. Silva, and the anonymous reviewer, whose useful comments and suggestions greatly improved the manuscript., In this work, we prove the usefulness of morphometric analyses, typically applied to basin-border faults, to define the tectonic geomorphology of a slow-moving, intrabasinal structure: the Galera Fault (Guadix-Baza Basin, southern Spain). The Galera Fault is a 30 km-long, oblique-slip fault with major left-lateral and minor vertical slip components. Through geological and structural analyses, we define for the first time the detailed surface geometry of the fault, which is characterized by features typical of left-lateral strike-slip faults. The morphometric analysis indicates that a combination of slow slip rates and the high erodibility of the juxtaposed basin infill deposits favours a rapid landscape response to fault activity that erases many landscape effects related to active tectonics. This masking is more effective on features generated by strike-slip displacement, leaving only subtle evidence, such as local stream deflections and upstream widening of catchments. In contrast, geomorphic effects related to vertical displacement are better preserved, including the control of the geometry of the main rivers and morphological differences in the drainage network between the two fault blocks. On the upthrown fault block, streams are generally shorter and steeper and have greater valley incision, leading to the development of a bad land landscape. Moreover, the vertical deformation of a Middle Pleistocene glacis surface (ca. 90 m) demonstrates the important role of this slow-moving intrabasinal fault in the generation of relief in the Betic Cordillera during recent Quaternary time. In this study, the physicochemical properties of granitic rocks subjected to quenching cycles were studied experimentally. Four granites of similar mineralogy but with different degrees of initial weathering (porosity between 1 and 6%) were slowly preheated at two peak temperatures (200 and 400 °C) and then quenched 35 times. To study the effect of thermal cycling on the physical properties, non-destructive tests were used such as water porosity, capillary water absorption tests, P- and S- wave propagation velocities, nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry, and X-ray micro-tomography. Chemical analysis of the granites was performed using X-ray fluorescence, which provided information on the major and trace elements. Water-granite interactions were followed using inductive plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The variation of all the measured parameters indicates the creation of cracks with thermal fatigue. The porosity, water uptake, size, and volume of cracks increased while P- and S- wave velocity and Young's modulus decreased. At 200 °C, the changes were progressive up to ten cycles, from which the stress threshold was reached and only small readjustments took place. At 400 °C, the greatest damage was observed during the first five cycles. These changes were a direct consequence of the propagation of the microcracks induced by the strong gradient during the quenching tests. For both temperatures, the changes depended on the initial weathering conditions of the granites. Initially, weathered granites showed crack development or crack closure during quenching, meanwhile the damage on the sound rocks was characterized by the creation of intragranular microcracks. The analysis of the experimental fluids showed enrichment in K, Na and Ca in the solution as consequence of the dissolution of K-feldspar, plagioclase and the degradation of mica and clays, independently of the physical and mechanical modifications. Two main groups of geological models presented over the last four decades on the palaeogeographic, paleotectonic and geodynamic eo-Alpine and neo-Alpine evolution of the central-western Mediterranean area were compared. The comparison was carried out mainly considering the main stratigraphic, sedimentological, petrographic, structural and plate tectonic constraints. Moreover, recent geophysical interpretations and reconstructions were also considered with an aim of presenting all the different results. The models can roughly be grouped into two main classes. First family considers the presence of the Mesozoic Tethyan Ocean, where a single oceanic basin is located between Africa and Europe and from which both eo-Alpine and neo-Alpine chains were generated during the Cretaceous to Miocene time span. Conversely, the other class considers the occurrence of at least two Tethyan oceanic branches (or with thinned continental crust) since the Jurassic, separated by one or more microcontinents. The pros and cons of both classes of models are presented. Progressive innovations and improvements to the two groups of models were proposed over the years. However, because the models are based on different data sets resulting from basic geological studies or obtained by means of other approaches, they often do not integrate easily. This caused interpretative difficulties and terminological uncertainties for their comparison, and completely different models were considered equivalent and, sometimes, the same terminology was used indifferently to identify different geological subjects. The main differences between the examined models concern the kinematic reconstructions and by hence in the palaeogeographic and paleotectonic interpretations. The discussion presented in this paper aims at contributing to clarify and update the state of knowledge on this controversial topic. The Lorca and Fortuna basins are two intramontane Neogene basins located in the eastern Betic Cordillera (SE Spain). During the Late Tortonian—Early Messinian, marine and continental evaporites precipitated in these basins as a consequence of increased marine restriction and isolation. Here we show a stratigraphic correlation between the evaporite records of these basins based on geochemical indicators. We use SO4 isotope compositions and Sr isotopic ratios in gypsum, and halite Br contents to characterize these units and to identify the marine or continental source of the waters feeding the evaporite basins. In addition, we review the available chronological information used to date these evaporites in Lorca (La Serrata Fm), including a thick saline deposit, that we correlate with the First Evaporitic Group in Fortuna (Los Baños Fm). This correlation is also supported by micropalaeontological data, giving a Late Tortonian age for this sequence. The Second Evaporitic Group, (Chicamo Fm), and the Third Evaporitic Group (Rambla Salada Fm) developed only in Fortuna during the Messinian. According to the palaeogeographical scheme presented here, the evaporites of the Lorca and Fortuna basins were formed during the Late Tortonian—Early Messinian, close to the Betic Seaway closure. Sulphate isotope compositions and Sr isotopic ratios of the Ribera Gypsum Mb, at the base of the Rambla Salada Fm (Fortuna basin), match those of the Late Messinian selenite gypsum beds in San Miguel de Salinas, in the near Bajo Segura basin (40 km to the East), and other Messinian Salinity Crisis gypsum deposits in the Mediterranean. According to these geochemical indicators and the uncertainty of the chronology of this unit, the assignment of the Rambla Salada Fm to the MSC cannot be ruled out. A single calcite crystal shows a pronounced anisotropy that can be transferred to the bulk stone, especially in the case of marbles. The aim of this paper is to analyse the effect of the preferential crystallographic orientation of the anisotropic calcite crystals on the surface properties of foliated marbles. Variations of microhardness, roughness, solubility and contact angle in rock surfaces are studied taking into account their relative position with respect the metamorphic foliation. Results show that more than 50% of the crystals have their c-axis oriented close to the normal of the axial foliation plane. This fact has a direct response on its surface properties: i) the microhardness in surface parallel to metamorphic foliation is a 14% higher than it is in the perpendicular surface; ii) contact angle of the water on the parallel faces is slightly lower than it is on the perpendicular one (42.75° and 53.25°, respectively); and iii) a lower chemical reactivity is estimated on parallel faces, which results in a lesser roughness of weathered surfaces. Results from this paper determine the optimal direction in which an ornamental piece should be cut in order to guarantee its maximum durability. A review study is presented targeting the question how topographic amplification of strong earthquake ground motions is currently handled in literature and how this effect can be incorporated within earthquake loss estimation (ELE). An improved understanding of the phenomenon would also facilitate its inclusion in future building design code provisions in a more rigorous manner than present levels. Even though it is widely accepted that, in addition to soil conditions, surface topography can have considerable influence on the frequency and amplitude characteristics of earthquake ground motion, this effect has been neglected in all of the existing ELE software tools, and neither do ELE studies in general consider this effect. Therefore, after a detailed review of the existing literature, we have synthesized the results from some of the studies into a period-dependent topographic amplification relationship (including PGA) for sites at the top of a hill, which may be used in ELE studies. The relationship for an amplification factor, Ah, was obtained by fitting a database containing 333 data points, in which Ah ranges from 0.31 to 3.04, and the shape relief (H/L) ranges from 0.25 to 0.8. Out of these, seven data points correspond to topographic amplification of PGA while the remaining data points correspond to amplification of the spectral acceleration at periods ranging between 0.065 and 3.91 s. All the data stems from analytical/numerical studies and we have only considered the possibility of topographic amplification due to SV/SH waves with an incidence angle perpendicular to the base of the hill. The results show a reasonable correlation between the theoretical and the fitted data. We also have compared the amplification factors provided by our period-dependent relationships with the most recent experimental and numerical data for the Narni ridge (Italy) and found close similarities with these results. The proposed relationship can be used not only in ELE studies but also in simplified seismic microzonation studies. Successive excavation of 13 trenches of different orientations reveals the complexity of a normal fault zone in Pliocene-Pleistocene unconsolidated sediments on a strand of the Baza Fault, central Betic Cordillera, south Spain. These trenches and the excavation floor are interpreted and integrated to reconstruct the 3D geometry and internal architecture of the fault zone. The structure consists of two main fault strands: an eastern one with a few hundred metres throw and a western one with at least 15 m throw. These strands interact and gradually merge to the south, bounding a main deformation zone narrowing from ∼7 to 1 m along strike. Fault-bounded rock bodies, clay and sand smears, and clay injections define the structure. These features are highly variable in 3D. In the northern part of the outcrop, deformation is localized around the main strands, brittle in the west and more ductile to the east. As the strands and their fault zones increasingly interact, fault throw, rock deformation and maturity of the structure increase. Mechanical stratigraphy also controls the style of deformation. A realistic representation of this 4D picture of fault deformation is critical for modelling fluid flow in shallow to possibly deep, faulted sedimentary reservoirs. Volcanic rocks of the Zamoranos Formation exposed in the Betic Cordillera of southern Spain reveal Late Triassic CAMP volcanism extending from southwest to southeast of the Iberian massif. Comparison with volcanic rocks from the Upper Triassic of the Algarve region in Portugal enables correlation between these different magmatic provinces based on the striking geochemical similarity. The studied mafic magmatic rocks in the Betic Cordillera reveal three volcanic episodes during the deposition of the Zamoranos Formation with two types of geochemical affinity: alkaline (Group 1) and sub-alkaline (Group 2 and 3). The sub-alkaline rocks resemble the studied Triassic rocks of Portugal and the magmatism described as CAMP on a global scale. In the present study, the identification of alkaline rocks preceding the main CAMP sub-alkaline phase by ca. 15 Ma, is the first evidence of alkaline precursors prior to CAMP magmatism and indicates a change from a prior deeper enriched mantle source to a subsequent, shallower one. The temporal evolution of alkaline magmatism followed by a CAMP-type sub-alkaline magmatism is best explained in a context of initial rifting during Norian-Rhaetian times. The Cenozoic Malaguide Basin from Sierra Espuña (Internal Betic Zone, S Spain) due to the quality of outcropping, areal representation, and continuity in the sedimentation can be considered a key-basin. In the last 30 years, a large number of studies with very different methodological approaches have been done in the area. Models indicate an evolution from passive margin to wedge-top basin from Late Cretaceous to Early Miocene. Sedimentation changes from limestone platforms with scarce terrigenous inputs, during the Paleocene to Early Oligocene, to the deep basin with huge supplies of turbidite sandstones and conglomerates during the Late Oligocene to Early Miocene. The area now appears structured as an antiformal stack with evidence of synsedimentary tectonics. The Cenozoic tectono-sedimentary basin evolution is related to three phases: (1) flexural tectonics during most of the Paleogene times to create the basin; (2) fault and fold compartmentation of the basin with the creation of structural highs and subsiding areas related to blind-fault-propagation folds, deforming the basin from south to north during Late Oligocene to Early Aquitanian times; (3) thin-skin thrusting tectonics when the basin began to be eroded during the Late Aquitanian-Burdigalian. In recent times some works on the geological heritage of the area have been performed trying to diffuse different geological aspects of the sector to the general public. A review of the studies performed and the revisiting of the area allow proposing different key-outcrops to follow the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the Cenozoic basin from this area. Eight sites of geological interest have been selected (Cretaceous-Cenozoic boundary, Paleocene Mula Fm, Lower Eocene Espuña-Valdelaparra Fms, Middle Eocene Malvariche-Cánovas Fms, Lowermost Oligocene As Fm, Upper Oligocene-Lower Aquitanian Bosque Fm, Upper Oligocene-Aquitanian Río Pliego Fm, Burdigalian El Niño Fm) and an evaluation has been performed to obtain four parameters: the scientific value, the educational and touristic potential, and the degradation risk. The firsts three parameters obtained values above 50 being considered of “high” or “very high” interest (“very high” in most of the cases). The last parameter shows always values below 50 indicating a “moderate” or “low” risk of degradation. The obtained values allow us considering the tectono-sedimentary evolution of this basin worthy of being proposed as a geological heritage. The Las Minas Gypsum Unit consists of more than 100 m of alternations of gypsum, carbonates and marls in Las Minas Basin (Betic Cordillera). Although this unit has been previously described as lacustrine, a marine influence in the basin has been suggested. This study provides new geochemical and paleontological data supporting the marine influence during the interevaporitic episodes, allowing to refine the palaeogeography of the eastern Betic Seaway during the Late Tortonian. Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios in gypsum (0.70797 to 0.70825) suggest recycling of Triassic evaporites. The sulphate isotopic values in gypsum (11.5 < delta S-34(VCDT) < 21.9 parts per thousand; 16.6 < delta O-18(VSMOW) < 28.1 parts per thousand) are indicative of microbial sulfate-reduction activity. Carbonates are mainly composed of dolomite formed by subspherical crystal aggregates related to bio-mediated processes. The Sr-87/Sr-86 values in the interevaporitic carbonates (0.70823 to 0.70851) are higher than those expected for Triassic marine authigenic carbonates but lower than expected for the Late Miocene ones, suggesting a mixing of continental and marine water contributions. The 'non-marine' isotopic values in gypsum and carbonates contrast with an abundant content of marine siliceous fossils (radiolarians, diatoms, porifera, etc.) in the marls and carbonates that reveals marine incursions into the basin between periods of gypsum precipitation. A tephra layer identified in Las Minas and in the nearby El Cenajo Basin, located in a more inland position, allows a precise correlation between both basins, showing marine fossils in Las Minas and lacustrine in El Cenajo. In El Cenajo Basin, marine microfossils have been found but only in some levels, while others show lacustrine diatoms. A new palaeogeographic model of evaporitic lakes with temporal marine connections is proposed for the latest Tortonian in this region, when the uplift of the Betic Cordillera was very active accelerating the palaeogeographic evolution., Funding was provided by Spanish Government grants CGL-2013-42689 and CGL-2016-79458, and by the Catalan Government action 217-SGR-829.

One of the most significant parameters for seismic hazard assessment analyses is the fault slip rate. The combination of both geological (long-term) and geodetic (short-term) data offers a more complete characterization of the seismic potential of active faults. Moreover, geodetic data are also a helpful tool for the analysis of geodynamic processes. In this work, we present the results of a local GPS network from the Baza sub-Basin (SE Spain). This network, which includes six sites, was established in 2008 and has been observed for seven years. For the first time, we obtain short-term slip rates for the two active faults in this area. For the normal Baza Fault, we estimate slip rates ranging between 0.3 ± 0.3 mm/yr and 1.3 ± 0.4 mm/yr. For the strike-slip Galera Fault, we quantify the slip rate as 0.5 ± 0.3 mm/yr. Our GPS study shows a discrepancy for the Baza Fault between the short-term slip rates and previously reported long-term rates. This discrepancy indicates that the fault could be presently in a period with a displacement rate higher than the mean of the magnitude 6 seismic cycle. Moreover, the velocity vectors that we obtained also show the regional tectonic significance of the Baza Fault, as this structure accommodates one-third of the regional extension of the Central Betic Cordillera. Our GPS-related slip rates form the basis for future seismic hazard analysis in this area. Our results have further implications, as they indicate that the Baza and Galera Faults are kinematically coherent and they divide the Baza sub-Basin into two tectonic blocks. This points to a likely physical link between the Baza and Galera Faults; hence, a potential complex rupture involving both faults should be considered in future seismic hazard assessment studies., We acknowledge the comments of Editor Prof. Irina M. We gratefully acknowledge the constructive comments of two anonymous reviewers., This paper describes various soft-sediment deformation structures present in the Triassic deposits of the Betic External Zone (Southern Iberian). These structures, together with variations in deposit thicknesses, internal angular unconformities, and synsedimentary faults, point to intense tectonic activity from the Middle to Late Triassic related to a stage of rifting. The Middle–Late Triassic in the Betic External Zone shows a sedimentary record represented by Muschelkalk and Keuper facies. In the Ladinian Muschelkalk, carbonates appear slumps, breccias, load casts, slide and parallel shear sur faces, and tsunamites. In the sandstones of the Carnian Keuper facies, different seismite beds and ball and pillow structures can be discerned. Above these deposits, the carbonate Zamoranos Formation of the Rhaetian displays volcaniclastic rocks with conglomerates, slumps and synsedimentary faults. All these features and magmatism suggest some tectonic activity, possibly related to the breakup of Pangaea, especially at the end Triassic. This investigation studies the physical and chemical effect of salt weathering on biocalcarenites and biocalcrudites in the Basilica of Our Lady of Succour (Aspe, Spain). Weathering patterns are the result of salty rising capillary water and water lixiviated from pigeon droppings. Surface modifications and features induced by material loss are observable in the monument. Formation of gypsum, hexahydrite, halite, aphthitalite and arcanite is associated with rising capillary water, and niter, hydroxyapatite, brushite, struvite, weddellite, oxammite and halite with pigeon droppings. Humberstonite is related to the interaction of both types of waters. Analysis of crystal shapes reveals different saturation degree conditions. Single salts show non-equilibrium shapes, implying higher crystallisation pressures. Single salts have undergone dissolution and/or dehydration processes enhancing the deterioration process, particularly in the presence of magnesium sulphate. Double salts (humberstonite) have crystals corresponding to near-equilibrium form, implying lower crystallisation pressures. This geochemical study suggests salts precipitate via incongruent reactions rather than congruent precipitation, where hexahydrite is the precursor and limiting reactant of humberstonite. Chemical dissolution of limestone is driven mainly by the presence of acidic water lixiviated from pigeon droppings and is a critical weathering process affecting the most valuable architectural elements present in the fa&ccedil, ades.

The Cenozoic sedimentary cover of the Malaguide Complex (Internal Betic Cordillera, Spain), in the Almería and Málaga areas, consists of a suite of sedimentary successions from continental and shallow-marine to deep-marine environments. Structural and stratigraphic relations, and petrological and geochemical signatures reveal the sedimentary evolution of the Cenozoic Malaguide Complex (CMC) from pre-orogenic (Palocene-Eocene) to syn-orogenic (Oligocene-Early Miocene) stages. Sandstones detrital modes of the overall succession are heterogeneous testifying to a multi-source area, marked by exhumation of the Malaguide basement terranes and of the Internal Betic Zone (Alpujárride Complex) in lower position. Pre-orogenic and syn-orogenic strata consist of four main depositional sequences: the Mula Group (Paleocene), the Xiquena Group (Eocene) for the preorogenic successions; and Ciudad Granada Group (Oligocene-Aquitanian) and Viñuela Group (Burdigalian) for the synorogenic successions. Pre-orogenic strata evolve from intra-arenite to hybrid arenites to progressive increase of sandstones in abundance of detrital supply from sedimentary cover of the internal Betic units. The unroofing history of the internal Betic Units, predominantly in the Malaguide Complex, is clearly testified in strata of the synorogenic clastic units, where detrital supply is coming from the Malaguide Complex. Sedimentary lithic fragments were derived from the Mesozoic strata of the Malaguide Complex while metamorphic detritus is related to the Internal Betic Zone basement that was exhumed starting from the Oligocene. Pre-orogenic mudrocks mainly show abundance of calcite and dolomite over quartz and phyllosilicates. Syn-orogenic mudrocks, record an abrupt decrease in calcite and dolomite and an increase of phyllosilicate, quartz and feldspars mainly in the Malaga section. The geochemical signatures attest to a compositional variation of the samples from pre-to-synorogenic successions, with palaeoweathering indices showing moderate values and a weak up-section decrease. The Cenozoic Malaguide Complex played a key role in the geodynamic evolution of the Betic Cordillera, representing the key tectonic element of the western Mesomediterranean domains. Almandine-spessartine garnets, from the Oxford County pegmatites and the Palermo No. 1 pegmatite, record significant compositional variations according to the degree of evolution of their hosting rock. Garnets from the most fractionated pegmatites (Mt. Mica, Berry-Havey, and Emmons) show the highest Mn, Nb, Ta, Zr, and Hf values, followed by those from the intermediate grade pegmatites (Palermo No. 1) and, finally, garnets from the barren pegmatites show the lowest values (Perham and Stop-35). Iron, Ca, and Mg contents follow an inverse order, with the highest contents in the latter pegmatites. Major element zoning shows increasing Mn values from core to rim in most garnet samples, while trace element zoning is not systematic except for some crystals which show a core to rim depletion for most of these elements. Chondrite normalized HREE (Heavy Rare Earth Elements) spectra show positive slopes for garnets from barren pegmatites, both positive and negative slopes for those associated with the intermediate pegmatite, and negative or flat slopes in garnets from the highly fractionated pegmatites. Ion exchange mechanisms, including Fe2+−1Mn2+1, (Fe2+, Mn2+)−1Si−1Li1P1, and, (Y, Ho3+)2(vac)1(Fe2+, Mn2+)−3, could explain most of the compositional variations observed in these garnets. These compositional variations are the reflection of the composition of the pegmatitic magma (barren pegmatites originate from a more ferromagnesian magma than fractionated pegmatites), and of the coexisting mineral phases competing with garnets to host certain chemical elements, such as biotite, schorl, plagioclase, apatite, Fe-Mn phosphates, Nb-Ta oxides, zircon, xenotime, and monazite.

The reactivation of very large landslides may cause severe damage to society. Its prevention and management requires detailed information on the geometry and structure of these landslides, but the use of standard techniques (boreholes) may be prohibitive from an economic point of view. To overcome these difficulties, geophysical techniques are of special interest because they allow for studying very large areas at a reasonable cost. In this paper, we present a case study wherein the analysis of ambient noise allowed us to produce a model of a large landslide near Granada (southern Spain). The geometry and location of the failure zone, as well as the assessment of the state of involved materials, were estimated by combining two available boreholes and different geophysical techniques (downhole tests and the spectral analysis of ambient noise, horizontal to vertical spectral ratios (HVSR) and the frequency-wavenumber (f-k) methods). The results have allowed us to differentiate between values within the landslide mass with respect to those of stable materials, and to perform for the first time a comprehensive geological model of this unstable mass. Differences were also observed within the landslide mass (earth flow vs. slide zones), which are attributed to differences in the degree of alteration and the disturbance of the internal structure of materials constituting the landslide mass. A study of the paleoenvironmental evolution of themiddle Eocene platforms recognized in the westernmost Tethys has been carried out in the well-exposed middle Eocene succession from Sierra Espuña-Mula basin (Betic Cordillera, S Spain). Eight microfacies (Mf1 to Mf8) have been recognized, based mainly on fossil assemblages (principally larger benthic foraminifera), and rock texture and fabric. The fossiliferous assemblage can be assigned to the ‘subtropical’ heterozoan association or to the low-latitude ‘foralgal facies’, which are dominated by non-framework building, light-dependent biota such as perforate larger benthic foraminifera, coralline algae, and sometimes green algae and solitary corals. Larger benthic foraminifer assemblages, corresponding from euphotic to oligophotic conditions and the large surface showed, suggest a progressive marine ramp under essentially oligotrophic conditions. Eventually, supply of detrital sediments fromthe continent and/or upwelling currents increases the nutrients of marine waters. Comparisonwith other Tethyan sectors allows stating that coral-reef buildups (z-corals) were widespread on shallow platforms of the central and eastern Tethys Ocean, but these were neither of great dimensions nor dominant because of themuchmore dominant presence of larger benthic foraminifera.Moreover, these coral constructions were completely absents in the westernmost Tethys. The dominance of larger benthic foraminifera and the absence of z-corals in the westernmost Tethys are explained by particular paleogeographic features due to the occurrence of a narrowand deep oceanic branch (i.e., the Maghrebian Flysch Basin) connecting the Tethys with the Atlantic Ocean. The various issues regarding the morphological characters and evolution of larger benthic foraminifera in the study area, such as sizes of tests, specific diversity and/or intraspecific variability, number of appearances and last occurrences during themiddle Eocene are analyzed and compared with those appearing in other Tethyan sectors. International audience; Here we developed and validated a new Benthic Foraminiferal Salinity (BFS) index from marginal-marine environments by analysing benthic foraminifera from the Holocene Guadalquivir estuary sediments (SW Spain). This index is formulated utilising only four species: Ammonia tepida and Haynesina germanica with higher tolerance to brackish waters and indicating lower salinity, and Elphidium translucens and Elphidium granosum indicative of greater marine influence and pointing to higher salinity. Thus, the BFS index is calculated easily and rapidly, and therefore it makes it possible to analyse a higher number of samples in less time. The BFS index values from the studied cores enabled the detailed description of subtle changes in the Guadalquivir estuary restriction during the Holocene. For this purpose, three degrees of salinity, depending on marine influence, were defined: higher (BFS index = 0.0-0.4, high marine influence), moderate (BFS index = 0.4-0.7, moderate marine influence), and lower (BFS index = 0.7-1.0, low marine influence). Before 2000 BCE, the estuary was moderately open and well-connected to the Atlantic Ocean. From 2000 BCE, the estuary experienced a greater marine influence, increasing in extension, as a consequence of a sea-level rise and subsidence. Immediately afterwards, it began to experience restriction processes due to southward shoreline progradation related to the growth of littoral spits and sediment supply. From 1400 to 1000 BCE, gradual restriction transformed the open estuary into a semiclosed estuary. A last phase of estuary restriction occurred from 1000 BCE to the present day, leading to the lowest salinity and the highest estuary restriction. Finally, the BFS index was successfully applied in two other marginal-marine environments: a Pleistocene lagoon in northern Italy, and a Pliocene coastal bay in southeastern Spain. The index allowed assessment of the degree of restriction in these different environments, supporting its utility in different regions, environments and timescales.

In this study, an inventory of landslides induced by the 2011 Lorca earthquake (Mw 5.1) has been used in order to develop a new procedure to obtain objective logic-tree weights for a probabilistic earthquake-induced landslide hazard analysis. The 2011 Lorca earthquake triggered more than 250 landslides, mainly of disrupted type. The logic-tree was designed having regard to variability of relevant geotechnical parameters involved in the problem and uncertainties associated with the use of several empirical relationships in order to compute Newmark displacements. For the purpose, the resulting hazard maps were compared with this landslide inventory, and weights estimated for each branch of the logic tree based on these results. The best model for seismic landslide hazard mapping for a moderate earthquake correctly identifies around 72% of landslide areas. Based on the set of parameters that comprises (depth of failure surface, specific weight, cohesion, friction angle and Newmark displacement model), the corresponding weights were objectively established. These weights are reliable enough for the obtaining seismic landslide hazard maps and may be implemented in similar environments characterized by moderate-low magnitude earthquakes (Mw

Today, coastal cities worldwide are facing major changes resulting from climate change and anthropogenic forcing, which requires adaptation and mitigation strategies to be established. In this context, sedimentological archives in many Mediterranean cities record a multi-millennial history of environmental dynamics and human adaptation, revealing a long-lasting resilience. Founded by the Phoenicians around 3000 years ago, Cádiz (south-western Spain) is a key example of a coastal resilient city. This urban centre is considered to be one of the first cities of western Europe and has experienced major natural hazards during its long history, such as coastal erosion, storms, and also tsunamis (like the one in 1755 CE following the destructive Lisbon earthquake). In the framework of an international, joint archaeological and geoarchaeological project, three cores have been drilled in a marine palaeochannel that ran through the ancient city of Cádiz. These cores reveal a ≥50 m thick Holocene sedimentary sequence. Importantly, most of the deposits date from the 1st millennium BCE to the 1st millennium CE. This exceptional sedimentary archive will allow our scientific team to achieve its research goals, which are (1) to reconstruct the palaeogeographical evolution of this specific coastal area; (2) to trace the intensity of activities of the city of Cádiz based on archaeological data, as well as geochemical and palaeoecological indicators; and (3) to identify and date high-energy event deposits such as storms and tsunamis.
