This review article summarizes the state of the art of cosmogenic 3He (3Hec), with a focus on the most efficient methods for measuring this cosmogenic noble gas in terrestrial samples. After briefly reviewing the scientific applications and production pathways of cosmogenic 3He, I summarize the most important theoretical and practical aspects of 3He analyses and describe the best strategies for correcting for non-cosmogenic 3He components in minerals. I also review our knowledge of 3Hec production rates and explore potential new applications for future studies. Our ability to accurately and precisely measure cosmogenic 3He is mainly constrained by the level of the non-cosmogenic 3He background (i.e., magmatic, radiogenic, nucleogenic, and atmospheric 3He), and thus by the geological characteristics of the samples. Constructing 3He vs. 4He isochrons by analyzing several aliquots from the same sample constitutes a useful and overlooked method that is advantageous because it obviates the often-complicated step of vacuum crushing. This method also allows the direct and joint determination of cosmogenic 3He and the magmatic 3He/4He ratio. I perform numerical modeling to explore the impact of the non-cosmogenic 3He components on the final uncertainties and detection limits of 3He dating. Reducing the magmatic component by selecting phenocrysts in the 100–500 m size fraction improves the precision of cosmogenic 3He analyses. Moreover, it is important to measure U, Th, and Li concentrations in the analyzed minerals and their host rocks to ensure proper corrections for radiogenic 4He and nucleogenic 3He, improving both the accuracy and precision of the method. After summarizing the most important aspects of 3He analytical techniques, including the best 3Hec extraction techniques and the key parameters of noble gas mass spectrometry that result in accurate and precise helium isotopic measurements, I also review 3Hec production rates and their spatial variability. The global database of absolute calibration sites yields a world-wide average 3Hec production rate in olivine and pyroxene of 124 ± 11 at g−1 yr−1 using the LSD scaling and the online CREp calculator (https://crep.otelo.univ-lorraine.fr/#/). Cross-calibrations against 10Be indicate that the ratio of the production rate of 3Hec in olivine/pyroxene to that of 10Be in quartz is 33 ± 2 and increases by less than 7% between sea level and 5,000 m elevation. This important observation demonstrates that 3He in olivine/pyroxene and 10Be in quartz can be considered as synchronized chronometers. However, 3Hec/10Be cross-calibrations based on 3Hec in accessory minerals (zircon, garnet, kyanite, apatite) yield unexpectedly high 3He/10Be production ratios of 40–60 above 3,000 m elevation. As the capture of cosmogenic thermal neutrons by 6Li is unlikely to explain this excess, I discuss other plausible mechanisms that should be explored, such as 3Hec inherited from previous exposure episodes, unrecognized specific reaction pathways, or the impact of snow cover. New cross-calibration data obtained by measuring 3Hec against other cosmogenic nuclides in different settings will advance our understanding of cosmogenic nuclide production rates and improve the accuracy and precision of applications relying on cosmogenic 3He. Other improvements could extend the applicability of the 3He geoscientific toolbox; for example, coupling 3He with radioactive cosmogenic nuclides (10Be, 36Cl, 53Mn) will allow paleoaltimetry or the determination of burial ages or paleo-depths in intermediate and mafic terrains.

The preservation of cosmogenic nuclides that accumulated during periods of prior exposure but were not subsequently removed by erosion or radioactive decay complicates interpretation of exposure, erosion, and burial ages used for a variety of geomorphological applications. In glacial settings, cold-based, non-erosive glacier ice may fail to remove inventories of inherited nuclides in glacially transported material. As a result, individual exposure ages can vary widely across a single landform (e.g., moraine) and exceed the expected or true depositional age. The surface processes that contribute to inheritance remain poorly understood, thus limiting interpretations of cosmogenic nuclide datasets in glacial environments. Here, we present a compilation of new and previously published exposure ages of multiple lithologies in local Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and older Pleistocene glacial sediments in the McMurdo Sound region of Antarctica. Unlike most Antarctic exposure chronologies, we are able to compare exposure ages of local LGM sediments directly against an independent radiocarbon chronology of fossil algae from the same sedimentary unit that brackets the age of the local LGM between 12.3 and 19.6 ka. Cosmogenic exposure ages vary by lithology, suggesting that bedrock source and surface processes prior to, during, and after glacial entrainment explain scatter. 10Be exposure ages of quartz in granite, sourced from the base of the stratigraphic section in the Transantarctic Mountains, are scattered but young, suggesting that clasts entrained by sub-glacial plucking can generate reasonable apparent exposure ages. 3He exposure ages of pyroxene in Ferrar Dolerite, which crops out above outlet glaciers in the Transantarctic Mountains, are older, which suggests that clasts initially exposed on cliff faces and glacially entrained by rock fall carry inherited nuclides. 3He exposure ages of olivine in basalt from local volcanic bedrock in the McMurdo Sound region contain many excessively old ages but also have a bimodal distribution with peak probabilities that slightly pre-date and post-date the local LGM; this suggests that glacial clasts from local bedrock record local landscape exposure. With the magnitude and geological processes contributing to age scatter in mind, we examine exposure ages of older glacial sediments deposited by the most extensive ice sheet to inundate McMurdo Sound during the Pleistocene. These results underscore how surface processes operating in the Transantarctic Mountains are expressed in the cosmogenic nuclide inventories held in Antarctic glacial sediments.

We used concentrations of in situ cosmogenic10Be from riverine sediment to quantify the basin‐averaged denudation rates and sediment fluxes in the Plessur Basin, Eastern Swiss Alps, which is a tributary stream to the Alpine Rhine, one of the largest streams in Europe. We complement the cosmogenic dataset with the results of morphometric analyses, geomorphic mapping, and sediment fingerprinting techniques. The results reveal that the Plessur Basin is still adjusting to the landscape perturbation caused by the glacial carving during the Last Glacial Maximum c. 20,000 years ago. This adjustment has been most efficient in the downstream part where the bedrock comprises high erodibility North Penninic flysch and Bündnerschist, whereas glacial land-forms are still prominently preserved in the upstream region, comprising low erodibility South Penninic and Austroalpine bedrock. This geomorphic observation is supported by the10Be based denudation rate and sediment provenance analysis, which indicate a much faster sediment production in the flysch and schist lithologies. Interestingly, the reach of fast denudation has experienced the highest exhumation and rock uplift rates. This suggests that lithologic and glacial conditioning have substantially contributed to the local uplift and denudation as some of the driving forces of a positive feedback system.

Zion National Park preserves a rich geological record of Holocene landslide-dammed canyons in its deeply incised topography, with 11 hypothesized valley-blocking deposits within the park boundaries. Despite consistent stratigraphic, tectonic, and climatic settings, the occurrence of and subsequent landscape response to these natural dams varies. As such, the region provides a unique natural laboratory for quantifying the effect and evolution of landslide dams in high-relief canyon topography. Here we present a detailed study of a rock avalanche deposited at the mouth of Hop Valley in Zion National Park, describing its age, size, emplacement conditions, impact on local geomorphology and sedimentology, as well as the subsequent usage of the valley by native Ancestral Puebloans. Topographic reconstructions indicate the original deposit was ~75 million m3 and 1.5 km long with a maximum thickness of 180 m. New ages from cosmogenic 10Be surface exposure dating indicate a single-event failure at 6.7 ± 0.7 ka. The rock avalanche impounded ~55 million m3 of sediment, transforming Hop Valley from a relatively narrow gorge to a broad flat-floored canyon. Stratigraphic sections of accumulated upvalley sediments, calculated sedimentation rates (averaging 8.2 ± 0.8 m/ky), and paleoclimate records suggest the deposit primarily dammed sediment, rather than water, to produce an extensive alluvial plain. This detailed case-history analysis, together with our review of other Holocene landslide dams in Zion National Park, helps clarify the legacy of valley-blocking mass movements in steep canyon topography.

The Haiyuan fault is a major left-lateral active fault of the India-Asia collision zone. While the 1000 km-long fault between Hala Lake in the west to Liupan Shan in the east accommodates eastward displacement of northeast Tibet relative to the Gobi-Alashan to the north, the amount of slip accumulated and its slip-rate remain debated. We revisit the site of Daqing (or Sangedun at 102.7°E in Gaudemer et al., 1995), to better constrain the long-term slip-rate of the Haiyuan fault in its central part. We used terrestrial LiDAR to build a high-resolution DEM and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle to build an aerial photomosaic with ~0.1 m resolution to survey the offset terraces, their geomorphology and the fault trace. We refine the geomorphological interpretation of the site, measure riser offsets and determine their relation to terrace formation. The well constrained age of the highest terrace T3 at 13.7 ± 1.5 ka determined from the combination of surface and sub-surface OSL, 14 C, and terrestrial in situ 10 Be cosmogenic nuclide dating, associated with the maximum lower terrace riser offset of 88 m yield a minimum slip-rate of 6.4±1.2 mm/yr over the late Pleistocene. The age of the intermediate terrace (T2) is bracketed between 8.0 ka (14 C) and 12 ka (10 Be). The ages and vertical offsets of the 2 highest terraces is used to infer the age of T2' offset vertically 5-7 m at 5.4±1 ka. Its 29±2 m offset is consistent with a rate of 6.5 mm/yr. Given the vertical offset youngest terrace T1 of 1.3±0.2 m its age is estimated at 1.2±0.2 ka in agreement with the youngest surface exposure age. Overall, a slip rate of 5-8 mm/yr fits all offset and age data at the Daqing site. The smallest offset of a gully incised into T1 of 6.0±0.5 m is potentially associated with the most recent slip event that occurred in the last millennia.

Application of in situ cosmogenic nuclides in dating glacial till – research potential, limitations and prospects. A b s t r a c t. Determination of numerical age for glacial till is one of the most intriguing issues in glacial geology and geomorphology. Till layers are unequivocal evidence of ice sheets advances and retreats, and therefore they are very important for Quaternary palaeoclimatic reconstructions. Herein, we present a review dedicated to the methodology of glacial till dating with in situ cosmogenic nuclides. This relatively novel approach enables direct dating of deposition of till and its exposure after deglaciation. Getting reliable numerical age (in years) of till opens a new prospect for reconstructions of past glaciations and palaeogeographic studies. Despite some limitations of applying in situ cosmogenic exposure and burial dating, we argue that this technique may be successfully employed in studies of glacial deposits in Poland.

We report geomorphic observations and cosmogenic-nuclide measurements on bedrock surfaces from three isolated nunatak groups in West Antarctica: the Pirrit Hills and Nash Hills, located in the Weddell Sea sector, and the Whitmore Mountains, located on the Ross-Weddell divide. The objectives of this paper are to (i) establish a chronology for landscape development at these sites and (ii) quantify the long-term history of ice-thickness variations in West Antarctica. These nunataks display relic alpine landscapes on which weathered bedrock surfaces are superimposed. In the Pirrit Hills, an erosional trimline is etched into alpine ridges and separates smooth-crested ridges below from serrated ridges above. Below the trimline, geomorphic evidence indicates repeated frozen-based ice cover, while above the trimline evidence for ice cover is entirely absent. There is also no geomorphic evidence for thicker-than-present ice at the Whitmore Mountains. Cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in the oldest bedrock surfaces from the Whitmore Mountains and from above the Pirrit Hills trimline indicate uninterrupted exposure for ∼12 Myr at extraordinarily low erosion rates. This places a lower limit on the timing of the formation of alpine landscapes in West Antarctica, and we hypothesize that this occurred during the relatively warm climates prior to the mid-Miocene cooling. The absence of evidence for thicker ice at the Whitmore Mountains is consistent with the hypothesis that the divide was typically thinner than present during Pleistocene glacial periods due to reduced accumulation. Bedrock surfaces below the trimline have much lower nuclide concentrations and are most easily explained by a scenario of repeated frozen-based ice cover and occasional subglacial plucking, which is consistent with geomorphic observations. Bedrock surfaces near the modern ice level appear to have been covered more than half of the time, while higher elevation surfaces indicate progressively less cover. The trimline and associated geomorphic features are very similar to a prominent trimline in the Ellsworth Mountains, and we conclude that these are, in fact, part of the same feature. The Ellsworth trimline is hypothesized to have formed during the mid-Miocene cooling and the transition from alpine to continental glaciation, and our results are consistent with this hypothesis.

Few data are available on how soil erosion rates compare between surfaces of different ages because short-term processes often overprint the longer-term erosion signal. This study investigated the soil dynamics among two end-member sites, a formerly glaciated ('young', maximum glacial extent at 22–30 ka BP) and a non-glaciated ('old') area at the Serra da Estrela (Portugal). To disentangle soil distribution rates over different timeframes, isotopes for long-term (10Be), mid-term (δ13C) and short-term (239+240Pu) periods were applied together with principles of the percolation theory. The formerly glaciated area has soils with a lower degree of weathering and lower carbon content compared to soils of the ‘old‘, non-glaciated area. The selected isotopes and their distribution along the soil profiles revealed temporal differences in soil mixing process. It is hypothesised that the slightly higher elevation and formerly glaciated sites experienced cryoturbation effects over a longer period, while being less active or absent for the last few decades at the older, non-glaciated soils. The average long-term (millennia) soil erosion rates correspond to the expected higher rates at the younger surface and lower rates at the older surface. Once the formerly glaciated area became ice-free, soil erosion rates were high and decreased giving rise to average long-term rates of 101–140 [t km−2 yr−1] for the older surfaces and 176–248 [t km−2 yr−1] for the younger surfaces. In addition, seasonal freeze–thaw of the soils has persisted over a long period and affected the younger soils more intensively than the older soils. The current (last decades) soil redistribution rates, however, are up to one order of magnitude higher than the millennia rates and are controlled by surface angle and vegetation cover and less by soil texture. The more undulated, non-glaciated older surface had the highest short-term (decades) soil erosion rates in the range of 900–1700 [t km−2 yr−1], exhibits degrading conditions and relatively shallow soils. The younger soils, however, showed short-term (last few decades) average soil deposition rates of ∼ 230 [t km−2 yr−1]. Quantifying bedrock weathering rates under diverse climate conditions is essential to understanding timescales of landscape evolution. Yet, weathering rates are often difficult to constrain, and associating a weathered landform to a specific formative environment can be complicated by overprinting of successive processes and temporally varying climate. In this study, we investigate three sites between 59 degrees N and 69 degrees N along the Norwegian coast that display grussic saprolite, tafoni, and linear weathering grooves on diverse lithologies. These weathering phenomena have been invoked as examples of geomorphic archives predating Quaternary glaciations and consequently as indicators of minimal glacial erosion. Here we apply cosmogenic nuclide chronometry to assess the recent erosional history. Our results demonstrate that all three sites experienced sufficient erosion to remove most cosmogenic nuclides formed prior to the Last Glacial Maximum. How post-burial terrestrial in situ cosmogenic nuclides (TCN) production is build-up in slow burial condition remains uncertain. In this study, we dated high fluvial terrace sediments that overlain by loess with a slow deposition rate that is based on the assumption of steady accumulation rate via 26Al/10Be burial dating method. For sample in deep and rapid buried condition prior to slow overlying, post-burial production shows low component (4–6%) in measured concentration. However, post-burial production occupied 39–79% of measured 26Al and 10Be concentrations, which suggests approximately 0.2–0.3 Ma underestimation in simple burial dating mode if post-burial production is neglected. Corrected by post-burial production, we yielded burial ages of two top terraces (ca. 1.7–2.5 Ma and 1.5 Ma, respectively) below the Tangxian planation surface along the Jinshan Gorge of the Yellow River, implying that the Jinshan Gorge initially incised at ca. 1.7–2.5 Ma, corresponding well to regional tectonic activities, such as extension in the Fenwei Graben, accelerative uplift of the Tangxian planation surface, vigorous dissection of North China, and significant tectonic deformation in northeastern Tibetan Plateau. The slow burial mode is probably a potential method for plateau paleo-elevation estimation taking advantage of height sensitivity of TCN production rate if overlying loess magnetostratigraphic age is known.

Surface exposure dating using cosmic-ray-produced nuclides has been applied to determine the age of thousands of landforms produced by alpine glaciers in mountain areas worldwide. These data are potentially an extensive, easily accessible, and globally distributed paleoclimate record. In particular, exposure-dated glacier chronologies are commonly applied to study the dynamics of massive, abrupt climate changes characteristic of the transition between the Last Glacial Maximum and the present interglacial climate. This article reviews developments in exposure dating from the perspective of whether this goal is achievable and concludes that ( a) individual exposure-dated landforms cannot, in general, be associated with millennial-scale climate events at high confidence, but ( b) dating uncertainties appear to be geographically and temporally unbiased, so the data set as a whole can be used to gain valuable insight into regional and global paleoclimate dynamics. Future applications of exposure-age chronologies of glacier change should move away from reliance on individual dated landforms and toward synoptic analysis of the global data set. ▪ Mountain glaciers worldwide leave a geologic record of their past advances and retreats, which reflect past climate changes. ▪ Geochemical dating methods based on cosmic-ray-produced nuclides have been used to date these deposits at thousands of sites worldwide. ▪ This data set is potentially an extensive, accessible, and globally distributed paleoclimate record.

Cryoplanation terraces are prominent but enigmatic landforms found in present and past periglacial environments. Geomorphologists have debated for more than a century over processes involved in the formation of these elevated, step-like, bedrock features. Presented here are the first numerical surface exposure ages and scarp retreat rates from cryoplanation terraces in the Yukon-Tanana Upland (YTU) in Alaska, part of unglaciated eastern Beringia, obtained from terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides (TCN) in surface boulders. Ages comprise six 10Be TCN ages from two terrace treads near Eagle Summit and six 36 Cl ages from two treads on Mt. Fairplay. Based on these exposure ages, scarps at both locations were last actively eroding from 49 to 22.4 ka. Both locations exhibit time-transgressive development, particularly near scarp-tread junctions. Boulder exposure ages and distances between sampled boulder locations were used to estimate scarp retreat rates of 0.11 to 0.56 cm/yr. These numerical exposure ages presented here demonstrate that the cryoplanation terraces in the YTU are diachronous surfaces actively eroding during multiple cold intervals. With these results, hypotheses for cryoplanation terrace formation are discussed and evaluated for the YTU, including those based on geologic structure, nivation, and the influence of permafrost.

Karstic caves are created by water eroding and corroding rocks that can be dissolved. Since both the spring areas of caves (normally at the valley bottom) as well as the recharge is controlled by superficial processes, the morphology of the cave bears strong links to these influences. Lowering of local base levels promotes the development of horizontal phreatic cave passages at progressively lower elevations, resulting in the formation of multi-level karst systems. Upon the next lowering of base level, these upper systems become fossilized, and sediment trapped within them may remain preserved for millions of years. Dating these sediments gives clues regarding the time when the passages were last active, and thus may yield age information for old valley floors. The present paper presents cosmogenic nuclide datings of twelve samples from eight caves in the central part of the Northern Calcareous Alps of Austria. Besides three samples that gave no results, most of the obtained ages are at the Mio-Pliocene boundary or within the Pliocene, as was expected before sampling. No multi-level caves could be sampled at different elevations, thus, the obtained valley deepening rates are averages between the age of sediment deposition and the present-day valley floor. However, the valley deepening rates of 0.12 to 0.21 km/Ma are in accordance to previous findings and corroborate a comparatively slow evolution of base level lowering in the Eastern Alps compared to the fast (Late Quaternary) evolution in the Central and Western Alps.

The intricate interplay between subglacial topography and ice-sheet dynamics is key to the evolution of large ice sheets, but in Greenland as elsewhere the effects of long-term glacial history on landscape evolution remain poorly constrained. Here we measure abundances of cosmogenic 10Be and 26Al in bedrock and transported boulders to unveil the glaciation and erosion history of Dove Bugt, northeast Greenland. In agreement with studies of west Greenland, we find that apparent exposure ages increase with elevation from 9 ka to 13 ka in low-lying valleys to 21 ka to 204 ka on high-elevation, blockfield-covered plateaus. We employ a Markov chain Monte Carlo inversion framework to constrain the probability of various erosion histories, and we quantify the residence time of samples within the upper 2 m of the bedrock subsurface—a measure defined as the cosmogenic nuclide memory. This cosmogenic nuclide memory exceeds 600 ka on the highest plateaus but is limited to less than 500 ka in most other high-elevation samples and to less than 100 ka at low-elevations. Our results define maximum limits for the fraction of ice cover during the past 1 Ma to ∼70% on the Store Koldewey peaks and ∼90% farther inland at Pusterdal, respectively. Minimum limits to ice cover, however, cannot be reliably constrained by the data. Finally, we propose that limited erosion on the highest plateaus of Store Koldewey since 0.6–1.0 Ma indicates a minimum age for fjord-plateau formation within this area of northeast Greenland.

Concentrations of cosmogenic nuclides in rocks at the Earth’s surface are routinely measured by AMS (accelerator mass spectrometry) to obtain exposure ages. One particular application of this technique has been to derive ages for the formation of marine terraces, thus allowing constraints to be placed on rates of tectonic uplift. However, multiple rock samples from the same terrace surface have typically shown an amount of scatter in cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in excess of analytical uncertainties, potentially undermining the confidence in the resulting uplift rates. In addition, earlier works have considered the application of bedrock samples for exposure age dating marine terraces, but little attention has been directed towards the validity of sampling clasts exposed on terrace surfaces. Here, we use 10Be and 26Al measurements from a flight of marine terraces in northern Chile to compare the results from pebbles with those from bedrock samples and to investigate assumptions that sample pre-exposure and burial are negligible. We examine the influence that processes of surface deflation and pebble erosion will have on cosmogenic nuclide concentrations using a Monte Carlo model, the results of which are compared to our 10Be measurements. We find good agreement of 10Be concentrations between bedrock and pebble samples. At the sampled location, sample burial is rare and 10Be inheritance in pebble samples is low relative to the age of the terraces. Our modelling suggests that in arid environments, such as northern Chile, pebble erosion will be a secondary effect compared to surface deflation and that multiple periods of deflation will result in multimodal distributions of 10Be concentrations. More broadly, our findings show that measuring multiple surface clasts from a single marine terrace reveals the geomorphological processes influencing exposure ages, and may also be used to help identify the operation of past surface processes such as episodic deflation.

Cosmogenic nuclides contained in the annual layers of natural materials record temporal variations in the galactic cosmic ray flux. 14C in tree rings and 10Be in ice cores from polar regions are often used to retrieve accurate histories of galactic cosmic rays. However, the variation in 14C produced in the atmosphere is strongly attenuated in the carbon cycle and the amplitude of decadal scale variations in tree rings is approximately 0.2‰. In the case of 10Be in ice cores, the variation remains at a relatively large amplitude; however, the records are accompanied by dating uncertainties. Another material that contains 10Be is sediment in continental areas. Terrestrial carbonate deposits sometimes form clear annual layers; however, detailed analyses on such deposits have not yet been widely conducted. Therefore, we evaluate the possibility of retrieving information concerning the galactic cosmic ray flux from the terrestrial carbonate deposits. In this paper, we report our preliminary results obtained from the measurements of 10Be in travertine and tufa samples from South China. We find that the 10Be flux obtained from the travertines is comparable to the level produced by galactic cosmic rays and that travertines might have potential as a tool for investigating past cosmic-ray variations with annual resolution.

Moderate-large earthquakes usually trigger a large number of landslides. The prehistoric large landslides can be analyzed to determine the probability of its seismic origin, and further recognized as an indicator of fault activity and earthquake intensity. Based on field investigation, high-resolution satellite image interpretation and cosmogenic exposure dating of landslide deposit, the paper presents a large, long-runout Luanshibao rock avalanche (the LSB rock avalanche), southeast Tibet. The study reveals that (1) the LSB rock avalanche straddles the Litang active strike-slip fault and deposits on the open-flat Quaternary Maoya basin, with a deposit volume of 67 Mm3 and an apparent coefficient of friction of 0.22. (2) Totally, 8 granite blocks from the proximal to the medial part of deposit dated by the Terrestrial Cosmogenic Nuclide method suggests an average 10Be exposure age of 3510 ± 346 a B.P. for the LSB rock avalanche; (3) the spatial-temporal intercutting relationships among the LSB rock avalanche, Quaternary sediments, and the Litang active fault suggest five strong paleoseismic events in the Maoya basin, which is temporally in accordance to the result defined by paleoearthquake-trench research; (4) the corresponding maximum magnitude could reach MW 7.1 ± 0.1 by the empirical equations between landslide volume and earthquake magnitude. It suggests that the Maoya section of Litang fault is probably more dangerous than other sections due to the high density of large co-seismic landslides, which could present useful reference for the alignment selection of future Sichuan-Tibet railway.

We quantify the magnitude of millennial-scale glacial erosion at Engabreen, a temperate glacier in coastal northern Norway, using the in situ cosmogenic nuclides carbon-14 (14C) and beryllium-10 (10Be) in bedrock exposed recently by glacial retreat. Nuclide concentrations show no dependence on distance down or across the valley. As such, resulting Holocene erosion depths along two transects perpendicular to glacier flow are highly variable with no systematic distribution, ranging from 0.10 to 2.95 m. We observed 14C–10Be ratios elevated above the production ratio in samples of abraded bedrock, which is counter to the expectation for surfaces covered during the Holocene and exposed only recently. Muon reactions produce nuclides at greater depths than do spallation reactions and 14C at production rates at higher than those of 10Be, resulting in 14C–10Be ratios that increase with depth. Therefore, elevated 14C–10Be ratios indicate that sampled sites were deeply plucked during recent cover, the Little Ice Age in this case, and then rapidly abraded prior to retreat. Our results suggest that, while glacial erosion can generate a u-shaped valley profile over long periods of time (e.g., 105–107 years), the discontinuous nature of glacial plucking produces spatially variable patterns of erosion over shorter millennial timescales.

The Himalayas stretch ∼3000 km along the Indo-Eurasian plate boundary. Along-strike variations in the fault geometry of the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) have given rise to significant variations in the topographic steepness, exhumation rate, and orographic precipitation along the Himalayan front. Over the past 2 decades, the rates and patterns of Himalayan denudation have been documented through numerous cosmogenic nuclide measurements in central and eastern Nepal, Bhutan, and northern India. To date, however, few denudation rates have been measured in Far Western Nepal, a ∼300 km wide region near the center of the Himalayan arc, which presents a significant gap in our understanding of Himalayan denudation. Here we report new catchment-averaged millennial-scale denudation rates inferred from cosmogenic 10Be in fluvial quartz at seven sites in Far Western Nepal. The inferred denudation rates range from 385±31 t km−2 yr−1 (0.15±0.01 mm yr−1) to 8737±2908 t km−2 yr−1 (3.3±1.1 mm yr−1) and, in combination with our analyses of channel topography, are broadly consistent with previously published relationships between catchment-averaged denudation rates and normalized channel steepness across the Himalaya. These data show that the denudation rate patterns in Far Western Nepal are consistent with those observed in central and eastern Nepal. The denudation rate estimates from Far Western Nepal show a weak correlation with catchment-averaged specific stream power, consistent with a Himalaya-wide compilation of previously published stream power values. Together, these observations are consistent with a dependence of denudation rate on both tectonic and climatic forcings, and they represent a first step toward filling an important gap in denudation rate measurements in Far Western Nepal.

IF 4.40; Q1); International audience; An emerged coral reef terrace sequence flanks the northern coast of Sumba Island in Indonesia. The sequence was created by the joint effects of uplift and Quaternary sea level oscillations. Since its emergence, it undergoes chemical erosion, which is facilitated by its carbonate lithology. The morphology is dissected by multiple catchments drained by deep canyons, whose stream profiles display several knickpoints. We applied a multi-methods approach using high-resolution topographic data (Pleiades imagery), geomorphological analysis and denudation rates derived from 36Cl cosmogenic nuclide concentrations to characterize the dynamics of these coastal drainages. We specifically investigate (1) the channel response to eustatic forcing, by analyzing knickpoint dynamics along a longitudinal river profile, and (2) the control of internal and external forcing over the catchment-scale erosion. Firstly, knickpoints form at the distal edge of the emergent reef at each regressive stage following a sea level highstand. The knickpoint propagates and rotates upward by regressive erosion. Knickpoint propagation rate decreases sharply over time until it becomes negligible before the next sea-level rise, which implies a marked decline in knickpoint retreat rate before its resorption. We attribute the inability of the river at Cape Laundi to fully propagate eustatic oscillations to its low stream discharge and low sediment supply, related to its small drainage area, to the karstic nature of the coral reef terraces composing the sequence, and to the high frequency of eustatic forcing. Secondly, average denudation rates calculated from 36Cl cosmogenic nuclide concentrations of sands collected at the outlet of five catchments draining the sequence amount to 69 ± 8 mm·ka−1. We emphasize the role of canyon areas in driving the denudation of the major catchments. However, no first-order correlation has been observed between catchment metrics, uplift rates and denudation rates. Finally, our correlations between catchment finite eroded volumes and uplift rates highlight the tendency of catchments to widen with low uplift rate and to lengthen while incising the sequence deeply with higher uplift rates.

The depocenters of epicontinental basins usually comprise relatively continuous depositional records, and these can be used in the determination of sediment routing and paleogeographic changes via a set of various geophysical, sedimentological, biostratigraphic and geochronological approaches. Although the margins of such basins will have a major role as constraints for that sediment routing, their depositional records are typically scarce and incomplete, posing a common challenge in terms of gaining information about them. The present study focuses on the upper Miocene succession present in the Malé Karpaty Mts., a pre-Cenozoic horst dividing the Vienna and Danube basins (Central Europe). The data gained by facies analysis, biostratigraphy, shallow seismic survey, authigenic 10Be/9Be dating and correlation of archival borehole profiles reveals, that the succession under consideration represents a record of the Lake Pannon transgression, which appeared in the study area at ~10.9–10.6 Ma. The subaerially exposed granitic massif and Middle Miocene successions sourced a shoal water delta, which intercalated with wave-induced dunes and open lacustrine muds in brackish sublittoral to marginal littoral environments. The granitic massif was probably also exposed later, during the regression of Lake Pannon at ~10.2–10.0 Ma, as a result of the progradation of the paleo-Danube delta from the Vienna Basin southeastwards. The depositional record of the regressive sequence was documented and dated in well-cores from the nearby Danube Basin margin. The documented scenario of transgression preceding the overall regression of the paleo-Danube delta system by a relatively short period is characteristic of several other localities across the Pannonian Basin System, and may imply that the progradation of depositional system caused a base-level rise on account of sediment loading-induced subsidence., RIVISTA ITALIANA DI PALEONTOLOGIA E STRATIGRAFIA , V. 127 N. 3 (2021)

International audience; Transient evolution and adjustment to changing tectonic and climatic boundary conditions is an essential attribute of landscapes, and characterizing transient behavior is a key to understanding their dynamics and history. Developing new approaches to detect such transience has been explored by various methods, in particular to identify landscape response to Late Cenozoic and Quaternary climatic changes. Such studies have often focused on regions of high relief and/or active tectonic activity where interferences between tectonic and climatic signals might complicate the interpretation of the observations. We investigated the case of the hillslopes of the Serra do Cipó quartzitic range in SE Brazil in order to detect and quantify transience in a tectonically quiescent landscape over 100-ka timescales. We determined hilltop curvature from a high-resolution digital surface model derived from Pléiades imagery and measured cosmogenic nuclide (10Be and 26Al) concentrations at these hilltop sites. We compare both observations with predictions of hillslope diffusion theory, observing a distinctive signature of an acceleration of denudation. We performed a joint inversion of topographic and isotopic data to retrieve an evolution of the hillslope sediment transport coefficient through time. The timing of the increase in denudation cannot be unequivocally associated with a single climatic event but is consistent with important, climatically modulated fluctuations in precipitation and erosion in this area during the Middle and Late Pleistocene.

Analysis of cosmogenic nuclides produced in surface rocks and sediments is a valuable tool for assessing rates of processes and the timing of events that shaped the Earth surface. The various nuclides that are used have specific advantages and limitations that depend on the time-range over which they are useful, the type of material they are produced in, and not least the feasibility of the analytical effort. Anticipating novel applications in Earth surface sciences, we develop in-situ produced terrestrial cosmogenic krypton (Krit) as a new tool; the motivation being the availability of six stable and one radioactive isotope (81Kr, half-life 229 kyr) and of an extremely weathering-resistant target mineral (zircon). We provide proof of principle that terrestrial Krit can be quantified and used to unravel Earth surface processes.

We established a new laboratory for noble gas mass spectrometry that is dedicated to the development and application to cosmogenic nuclides at the University of Cologne (Germany). At the core of the laboratory are a state-of-the-art high-mass-resolution multicollector Helix MC Plus (Thermo Fisher Scientific) noble gas mass spectrometer and a novel custom-designed automated extraction line. The mass spectrometer is equipped with five combined Faraday multiplier collectors, with 1012 and 1013 Ω pre-amplifiers for faraday collectors. We describe the extraction line and the automated procedure for cosmogenic neon and the current performance of the experimental set-up. Performance tests were conducted using gas of atmospheric isotopic composition (our primary standard gas), as well as CREU-1 intercomparison material, containing a mixture of neon of atmospheric and cosmogenic composition. We use the results from repeated analysis of CREU-1 to assess the performance of the current experimental set-up at Cologne. The precision in determining the abundance of cosmogenic 21Ne is equal to or better than those reported for other laboratories. The absolute value we obtain for the concentration of cosmogenic 21Ne in CREU is indistinguishable from the published value.

Understanding how fast glaciers erode their bedrock substrate is one of the key elements in reconstructing how the action of glaciers gives mountain ranges their shape. By combining cosmogenic nuclide concentrations determined in glacially abraded bedrock with a numerical model, we quantify glacial erosion rates over the last 15 ka. We measured cosmogenic Cl-36 in fourteen samples from the limestone forefield of the Vorab glacier (Eastern Alps, Switzerland). Determined glacial erosion rates range from 0.01 mm a(-1) to 0.16 mm a(-1). These glacial abrasion rates differ quite markedly from rates measured on crystalline bedrock (>1 mm a(-1)), but are similarly low to the rates determined on the only examined limestone plateau so far, the Tsanfleuron glacier forefield. Our data, congruent with field observations, suggest that the Vorab glacier planed off crystalline rock (Permian Verrucano) overlying the Glarus thrust. Upon reaching the underlying strongly karstified limestone the glacier virtually stopped eroding its bed. We attribute this to immediate drainage of meltwater into the karst passages below the glacier, which inhibits sliding. Cosmogenic Ne isotopes are used for constraining the timing and rate of cosmological and Earth surface processes. We combined an automated gas extraction (laser) and purification system with a Thermo Fisher ARGUS VI mass spectrometer for high through-put, high precision Ne isotope analysis. For extra-terrestrial material with high cosmogenic Ne concentrations, we used multi-collection on Faraday detectors. Multiple measurements (n = 26) of 1.67 × 10−8 cm3 air-derived 20Ne yielded an uncertainty of 0.32%, and 21Ne/20Ne = 0.17% and 22Ne/20Ne = 0.09%. We reproduced the isotope composition of cosmogenic Ne in the Bruderheim chondrite and Imilac pallasite in a sub-ten mg sample. For lower Ne amounts that are typical of terrestrial samples, an electron multiplier detector was used in peak jumping mode. Repeated analysis of 3.2 × 10−11 cm3 STP 20Ne from air reproduced 21Ne/20Ne and 22Ne/20Ne with 1.1% and 0.58%, respectively, and 20Ne intensity with 1.7% (n = 103) over a 4-month period. Multiple (n = 8) analysis of cosmogenic Ne in CREU-1 quartz yielded 3.25 ± 0.24 × 108 atoms/g (2 s), which overlaps with the global mean value. The repeatability is comparable to the best data reported in the international experiments performed so far on samples that are 2–5× smaller. The ability to make precise Ne isotope determinations in terrestrial and extra-terrestrial samples that are significantly smaller than previously analysed suggests that the new system holds great promise for studies with limited material.

Cosmogenic nuclides are widely used to constrain the landscape history of glaciated areas. At nunataks in continental polar regions with extremely arid conditions, cosmogenic nuclides are often the only method available to date the ice thinning history of the glacier. However, the amount of cosmogenic isotopes accumulated at the surface of nunataks depends not only on the length of time that rock has been exposed since the last deglaciation but also on the full history of the surface, including muon production under ice, exposure during previous interglacials, subaerial weathering rate, glacial erosion rate, and uplift rate of the nunatak. The NUNAtak Ice Thinning model (NUNAIT) simulates the cosmonuclide accumulation on vertical profiles, fitting the aforementioned parameters to a set of multi-isotope apparent ages from samples taken at different elevations over the ice-sheet surface. The NUNAIT calculator is an easy-to-use tool that constrains parameters that describe the geological history of a nunatak from a set of surface exposure ages.

Previous assumptions of continuous ice cover of the core area of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, from Marine Isotope Stage 4 (ca. 70 ka) to the end of MIS 2 (ca. 12 ka), have been challenged by the discovery of several sites in central and northern Scandinavia with interstadial sediments of assumed MIS 3 age. The sequences have often been dated by Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and dates of around 55 ka are present at most sites, indicating ice-free conditions at this time. There is less consensus about the timing of the build-up and advance of the last (Late Weichselian) ice sheet after this ice-free stage. To address the duration of MIS 3 ice-free conditions in central Scandinavia, we reviewed available dating evidence. At the few sites where multiple OSL dates are available, ages indicate around 15 ka of ice-free conditions. Two studies employing cosmogenic nuclide dating of preserved interstadial ground surfaces both indicate a 20 ka long period of ice-free conditions during the last ice-free period before the Holocene. Our interpretation is that central Scandinavia became ice-free around 55 ka and remained so until c. 35 ka, when the Scandinavian Ice Sheet started to expand once again. Expansion started from a small-sized remnant ice sheet, or from separate remnant ice caps in Norway. Available data limits the size of any Scandinavian ice sheet remnant surviving the MIS 3 interstadial to less than 1 m of global sea-level equivalent.

Corresponding author : Shlomy Vainer (shlomy.vainer@mail.huji.ac.il); International audience; The wide spatial coverage of sand dunes in continental interiors makes the understanding of their activity and accumulation history valuable for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions and the interpretation of landscape evolution. Nevertheless, the study of aeolian landscape development at the million-year timescale is hampered by the complex interaction of factors determining dune migration and the inherently self-destructive nature of their chronostratigraphy, thus limiting the applicability of traditional dating methods. This study presents a standalone program that simulates aeolian transport based on luminescence-derived chronologies coupled with numerical modelling of the accumulation of cosmogenic nuclides. This integrative approach to modelling the history of aeolian landforms reveals phases of emergence of aeolian sand into the landscape, and provides a data-based scheme that facilitates the morphodynamical study of aeolian processes over multiple timescales and up to several millions of years. The application of the program for reanalysing previously reported data from the Australian Simpson Desert reveals multiple pulses of sand dispersion into central Australia at 3.8–3.4, 2.9–2.5 and 1.5–1 Ma, corresponding to pronounced changes in climatic conditions and landscape deformation events. The synchronicity of the results with the established environmental framework that would promote the production and aeolian distribution of sand exemplifies the applicability of process-based modelling in constructing a timeframe of key landscape evolution events in arid environments by studying aeolian deposits. The dependence of the parameters used to determine environmental settings on sand transportation patterns additionally makes the program a powerful tool to further investigate the triggers and mechanisms of aeolian processes.

The annual 14C data in tree rings is an outstanding proxy for uncovering extreme solar energetic particle (SEP) events in the past. Signatures of extreme SEP events have been reported in 774/775 CE, 992/993 CE, and ∼660 BCE. Here, we report another rapid increase of 14C concentration in tree rings from California, Switzerland, and Finland around 5410 BCE. These 14C data series show a significant increase of ∼6‰ in 5411–5410 BCE. The signature of 14C variation is very similar to the confirmed three SEP events and points to an extreme short‐term flux of cosmic ray radiation into the atmosphere. The rapid 14C increase in 5411/5410 BCE rings occurred during a period of high solar activity and 60 years after a grand 14C excursion during 5481–5471 BCE. Understanding natural climate variability is a fundamental goal of paleoclimate science. Temperate mountain glaciers are sensitive to climate variability, changing volume, and thus thickness and length, in response to changes in temperature and precipitation. Glaciers deposit moraines at their margins, which if well-preserved may provide evidence of glacier length fluctuations following glacial retreat. Therefore mountain glaciers can be used as proxies to investigate past climatic changes, offering the potential to reconstruct the timing and magnitude of natural climate variability and paleoclimate for the former glacier extent(s). This study applies methods of detailed geomorphological mapping and cosmogenic 10Be surface exposure dating to establish a high-precision moraine chronology and examine the timing and magnitude of glacier length changes at Rocky Top cirque. A quantitative reconstruction of paleoclimate for the identified former glacier extents was produced using an equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) reconstruction method and application of a temperature lapse rate. Findings show a clear pattern of glacial retreat at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum, with exposure ages from moraine boulders successfully constraining the timing of five distinct periods of glacier readvance or standstills. The most recent glacial event at Rocky Top cirque occurred between 17342 ± 172 yrs BP and during this period the ELA was depressed by 611 m. The second innermost moraine produced an indistinguishable age of 17196 ± 220 yrs BP and had an ELA depression of 616 m, indicating rapid glacial retreat. Progressively older moraines produced surface exposure ages of 18709 ± 237 and 19629 ± 308 yrs BP, with ELA depressions of 618 and 626 m respectively. The oldest moraine of 34608 ± 8437 yrs BP had insufficient geomorphic constraint to produce an ELA. Paleoclimate reconstruction results suggest that a best estimate of paleotemperature at the time of moraine formation (~19-17 ka) was between 3.2 ± 0.8 to 3.3 ± 0.8°C cooler than present-day. Net retreat of the former glacier is consistent with other similar moraine chronologies from the Southern Alps, which supports the regional trend and suggests that glaciers in the Southern Alps responded to common climatic forcings between ~19-17 ka.

The timing of this increase cannot be unequivocally associated with a single climatic event but is consistent with climatically-modulated important fluctuations in precipitation and erosion in this area during Middle and Late Pleistocene.

Catchment erosion and sedimentation are influenced by variations in the rates of rock uplift (tectonics) and periodic fluctuations in climate and vegetation cover. This study focuses on quantifying the effects of changing climate and vegetation on erosion and sedimentation over distinct climate–vegetation settings by applying the Landlab–SPACE landscape evolution model. As catchment evolution is subjected to tectonic and climate forcings at millennial to million-year timescales, the simulations are performed for different tectonic scenarios and periodicities in climate–vegetation change. We present a series of generalized experiments that explore the sensitivity of catchment hillslope and fluvial erosion as well as sedimentation for different rock uplift rates (0.05, 0.1, 0.2 mm a−1) and Milankovitch climate periodicities (23, 41, and 100 kyr). Model inputs were parameterized for two different climate and vegetation conditions at two sites in the Chilean Coastal Cordillera at ∼26∘ S (arid and sparsely vegetated) and ∼33∘ S (Mediterranean). For each setting, steady-state topographies were produced for each uplift rate before introducing periodic variations in precipitation and vegetation cover. Following this, the sensitivity of these landscapes was analyzed for 3 Myr in a transient state. Results suggest that regardless of the uplift rate, transients in precipitation and vegetation cover resulted in transients in erosion rates in the direction of change in precipitation and vegetation. The transients in sedimentation were observed to be in the opposite direction of change in the precipitation and vegetation cover, with phase lags of ∼1.5–2.5 kyr. These phase lags can be attributed to the changes in plant functional type (PFT) distribution induced by the changes in climate and the regolith production rate. These effects are most pronounced over longer-period changes (100 kyr) and higher rock uplift rates (0.2 mm yr−1). This holds true for both the vegetation and climate settings considered. Furthermore, transient changes in catchment erosion due to varying vegetation and precipitation were between ∼35 % and 110 % of the background (rock uplift) rate and would be measurable with commonly used techniques (e.g., sediment flux histories, cosmogenic nuclides). Taken together, we find that vegetation-dependent erosion and sedimentation are influenced by Milankovitch timescale changes in climate but that these transient changes are superimposed upon tectonically driven rates of rock uplift.

Analytical approaches used in this study, analyses parameters, and resulting data.

The northward retreat history of the Laurentide ice sheet through the lowlands of the northeastern United States during the last deglaciation is well constrained, but its vertical thinning history is less well known because of the lack of direct constraints on ice thickness through time and space. In addition, the highest elevations in New England are characterized by gently sloping upland surfaces and weathered block fields, features with an uncertain history. To better constrain ice-sheet history in this area and its relationship to alpine geomorphology, we present 20 new 10Be and seven in situ 14C cosmogenic nuclide measurements along an elevation transect at Mount Washington, New Hampshire, the highest mountain in the northeastern United States (1917 m above sea level [a.s.l.]). Our results suggest substantially different exposure and erosion histories on the upper and lower parts of the mountain. Above 1600 m a.s.l., 10Be and in situ 14C measurements are consistent with upper reaches of the mountain deglaciating by 18 ka. However, some 10Be ages are up to several times greater than the age of the last deglaciation, consistent with weakly erosive, cold-based ice that did not deeply erode preglacial surfaces. Below 1600 m a.s.l., 10Be ages are indistinguishable over a nearly 900 m range in elevation and imply rapid ice-surface lowering ca. 14.1 ± 1.1 ka (1 standard deviation; n = 9). This shift from slow thinning early in the deglaciation on the upper part of the mountain to abrupt thinning across the lower elevations coincided with accelerated ice-margin retreat through the region recorded by Connecticut River valley varve records during the Bølling interstadial. The Mount Washington cosmogenic nuclide vertical transect and the Connecticut River valley varve record, along with other New England cosmogenic nuclide records, suggest rapid ice-volume loss in the interior northeastern United States in response to Bølling warming.

Reconstructions of the global production rate of the cosmogenic isotope 10Be from sedimentary records of authigenic 10Be/9Be ratios have been successfully used to obtain independent estimates of geomagnetic dipole moment variations caused by field excursions or reversals. In this study, we assess the reliability of 10Be/9Be as a proxy for the cosmogenic 10Be production rate by evaluating two potential biasing sources represented by sediment composition and climatic modulation. For this purpose, we compare five high-resolution 10Be/9Be records of the Matuyama-Brunhes (M-B) field reversal from sediment cores of the Indian, West Pacific, and North Atlantic oceans. Significant increase of 10Be/9Be ratios at ∼ 774 ka is explained in terms of the dominant control of geomagnetic modulation during the M-B reversal. Results do not support the existence of a direct proportionality between measured sedimentary 10Be/9Be ratio and cosmogenic 10Be production rate, as shown by 10Be/9Be records that offset relative to each other during and outside the M-B reversal. Residual differences between offset-corrected rescaled records do not appear to be related to an incomplete correction of variable sediment scavenging efficiencies by 9Be normalization. Instead, these differences can be explained by a common climatic modulation model, assuming a linear relation between 10Be/9Be and the global 10Be production rate with site- and time-dependent additive and multiplicative coefficients. These coefficients are linear functions of a single global climate proxy identified with the benthic δ 18 O record. Additive coefficients are almost constant in time and can represent up to ∼ 60% of the average 10Be/9Be value during periods of stable field polarity. Multiplicative coefficients are also site-specific, with mean values representing the bulk scavenging efficiency of the site, and variations about this mean expressing a multiplicative climatic modulation of the 10Be production rate. The amplitude of this modulation amounts to 10–15% of the maximum variations recorded during the M-B reversal and is sufficiently large to mask minor variations of the dipole moment during stable polarity periods. Reconstructions of the geomagnetic dipole intensity can benefit from the information about climatic modulation effects gained with our modelling approach. Best suited sites for magnetic field reconstructions should be characterized by minimal Be-recycling contributions from ancient 10Be reservoirs and minimal climatic modulation, as far as it can be determined from relative comparisons with other records. These conditions are most likely encountered in open basins at sites (1) with 2.8 km water depth, (2) > 200 km offshore, and (3) located underneath a large current system extending over regions with minimum terrigenous inputs. Scaling all records with respect to a chosen reference enables to produce 10Be/9Be stacks with reduced noise and short-term local environmental effects. Differences between stacks obtained in this manner highlight global climatic effects that need to be considered when generating calibrated reconstructions of the geomagnetic dipole moment.

In situ cosmogenic nuclides are an important tool for quantifying landscape evolution and dating fossil-bearing deposits in the Cradle of Humankind (CoH), South Africa. This technique mainly employs cosmogenic 10-Beryllium (Be-10) in river sediments to estimate denudation rates and the ratio of 26-Aluminium (Al-26) to Be-10 (Al-26/Be-10), to constrain ages of sediment burial. Here, we use Be-10 and Al-26 concentrations in bedrock and soil above the Rising Star Cave (the discovery site of Homo naledi) to constrain the denudation rate and the exposure history of soil on the surface. Apparent Be-10-derived denudation rates obtained from pebble- to cobble-sized clasts and coarse-sand in soil (on average 3.59 +/- 0.27 m/Ma and 3.05 +/- 0.25 m/Ma, respectively) are 2-3 times lower than the bedrock denudation rates (on average 9.46 +/- 0.68 m/Ma). In addition, soil samples yield an average Al-26/Be-10 ratio (5.12 +/- 0.27) that is significantly lower than the surface production ratio of 6.75, which suggests complex exposure histories. These results are consistent with prolonged surface residence of up to 1.5 Ma in vertically mixed soils that are up to 3 m thick. We conclude that the Be-10 concentrations accumulated in soils during the long near-surface residence times can potentially cause underestimation of single-nuclide (Be-10) catchment-wide denudation rates in the CoH. Further, burial ages of cave sediment samples that consist of an amalgamation of sand-size quartz grains could be overestimated if a pre-burial Al-26/Be-10 ratio calculated from the surface production is assumed.

Based on Terrestrial Cosmogenic Nuclide (TCN) constraints from depth profiles of one granitic regolith from Wumingshan and five fluvial terraces from Xianshuihe and Zagunao rivers, we discuss the timing of the last deglaciation, the landscape-scale denudation and fluvial incision rates across the eastern Tibetan Plateau, in relation to previous work. We present a three-dimensional-graph visualization approach and corresponding constraints to better assess the feasibility and applicability of cosmogenic nuclides depth-profile dating. The exposure age (older than 19.4 ka) of the Wumingshan regolith corresponds to the retreat of the palaeo-Daocheng ice cap, which covered the Yidun terrane during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Most basin-wide denudation rate data in the eastern Tibetan Plateau are lower than 130 mm/ka (47%, n = 90), which is consistent with the Wumingshan regolith denudation rate (lower than 52.8 mm/ka), and thus indicate that the landscape-scale denudation has been stabilized after the last deglaciation. Considering the reduction of integrated bulk density due to the accumulation of lower-density loess, we estimate mean exposure ages of Xianshuihe and Zagunao river terraces of 4.0 ± 0.7 ka, 5.9 ± 0.3 ka, 13.4 ± 2.0 ka, and 16.6 ± 1.4 ka. The observed increase in incision rate from 0.39 mm/yr over long timescale (∼600 ka) to 5.88 mm/yr over the last 15 ka at the Xianshuihe river site is probably due to the transition from glacial to interglacial climatic conditions. The fewer abandoned terraces along the Zagunao river after the Heinrich event 1 (H1) indicates that the climate change during the latest glacial-interglacial transition impacted less the landscape evolution in a relatively lower elevation area. Comparison with previously reported fluvial incision rates elsewhere across the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau indicates that incision rates are mainly influenced by abrupt climate change or intensified summer monsoon since the early Holocene, but probably controlled by regional tectonic uplift or fluvial headward retreat as the timescale increases. Overall, we propose a synthetic pattern of landscape evolution mainly dominated by long-term tectonic uplift together with fluvial headward erosion, episodically influenced by climatic change throughout the late Quaternary.

In this study, we employed cosmogenic nuclide 10Be analysis to determine the formation ages of the Yellow River terraces in the Mijia Shan and the Laolongwan Basin at the northeastern periphery of the Tibetan Plateau. The aim of this study is to determine local fluvial incision rates and the effect from tectonic activities. The two sets of terraces were surveyed in field and dated by cosmogenic 10Be exposure dating method. The results show that the best-fitting terrace ages in the Mijia Shan are respective 68.0 - 9.4 + 11.2 ka for T11 and 174.7 - 38.4 + 52 ka for T14. In addition, in the Laolongwan basin, sample S3 constrains an age of 123.9 ± 2.7 ka and S2 yields an age of 45.0 ± 1.8 ka. Combining the strath heights of the sampled terraces, the fluvial incision rates were determined. The results showed that the fluvial incision rate of the Yellow River is ∼1.94 mm/a in the Mijia Shan over the last 175 ka, while a much lower incision rate of ∼0.73 mm/a is yielded in the Laolongwan Basin since the last ∼120 ka. The incision rate in the Mijia Shan is almost twice more than that in the Laolongwan Basin. Considering the same climatic condition in both the Mijia Shan and the Laolongwan Basin, the difference between the two incision rates (∼1.21 mm/a) might be due to local tectonic deformation which is derived from the Haiyuan active strike-slip fault. Consequently, our results showed that the Haiyuan fault plays an important role in accelerating the incision rate in the Mijia Shan. Hence, it is suggested that the role of the main geological structures across the main river should also be considered when studying the evolution of terraces of big rivers.

International audience; Since the discovery of shatter cones (SCs) near the village of Agoudal (Morocco, Central High Atlas Mountains) in 2013, the absence of one or several associated circular structures led to speculation about the age of the impact event, the number, and the size of the impact crater or craters. Additional constraints on the crater size, age, and erosion rates are obtained here from geological, structural, and geophysical mapping and from cosmogenic nuclide data. Our geological maps of the Agoudal impact site at the scales of 1:30,000 (6 km(2)) and 1:15,000 (2.25 km(2)) include all known occurrences of SCs in target rocks, breccias, and vertical to overturned strata. Considering that strata surrounding the impact site are subhorizontal, we argue that disturbed strata are related to the impact event. Three types of breccias have been observed. Two of them (br1-2 and br2) could be produced by erosion-sedimentation-consolidation processes, with no evidence for impact breccias, while breccia (br1) might be impact related. The most probable center of the structure is estimated at 31 degrees 59 ' 13.73"N, 5 degrees 30 ' 55.14"W using the concentric deviation method applied to the orientation of strata over the disturbed area. Despite the absence of a morphological expression, the ground magnetic and electromagnetic surveys reveal anomalies spatially associated with disturbed strata and SC occurrences. The geophysical data, the structural observations, and the area of occurrence of SCs in target rocks are all consistent with an original size of 1.4-4.2 km in diameter. Cosmogenic nuclide data (Cl-36) constrain the local erosion rates between 220 +/- 22 m Ma(-1) and 430 +/- 43 m Ma(-1). These erosion rates may remove the topographic expression of such a crater and its ejecta in a time period of about 0.3-1.9 Ma. This age is older than the Agoudal iron meteorite age (105 +/- 40 kyr). This new age constraint excludes the possibility of a genetic relationship between the Agoudal iron meteorite fall and the formation of the Agoudal impact site. A chronolgy chart including the Atlas orogeny, the alternation of sedimentation and erosion periods, and the meteoritic impacts is presented based on all obtained and combined data.
