A semipermanent Global Positioning System (GPS) network of 30 vertices known as the Victoria Land Network for Deformation Control (VLNDEF) was set up in the Austral summer of 1998 in northern Victoria Land (NVL), including Terra Nova Bay (TNB), Antarctica. The locations were selected according to the known Cenozoic fault framework, which is characterized by a system of NW‐SE regional faults with right‐lateral, strike‐slip kinematics. The TNB1 permanent GPS station is within the VLNDEF, and following its installation on a bedrock monument in October 1998, it has been recording almost continuously. The GPS network has been surveyed routinely every two summers, using high‐quality, dual‐frequency GPS receivers. In this study we present the results of a distributed session approach applied to the processing of the GPS data of the VLNDEF. An improved reference frame definition was implemented, including a new Euler pole, to compute the Antarctic intraplate residual velocities. The projection of the residual velocities on the main faults in NVL show present‐day activities for some faults, including the Tucker, Leap Year, Lanterman, Aviator, and David faults, with right‐lateral strike‐slip kinematics and local extensional and compressional components. This active fault pattern divides NVL into eight rigid blocks, each characterized by its relative movements and rigid rotations. These show velocities of up to several millimeters per year, which are comparable to those predicted by plate tectonic theory at active plate margins.

SUMMARY We present a new geodetic velocity solution for Italy and the surrounding areas, obtained from an analysis of continuous and survey-mode Global Positioning System observations collected between 1991 and 2002. We have combined local, regional and global networks into a common reference frame velocity solution, providing a new detailed picture of the regional-scale deformation field in the central Mediterranean. Our velocity estimates are computed with respect to a new stable Eurasian reference frame, constraining the kinematics of the greater African–Eurasian plate boundary system in the study area. We provide strain-rate values for the main seismotectonic districts, which are in good agreement with the seismic deformation inferred from earthquake focal mechanisms. The southern Tyrrhenian area, Calabria, the Apennines, the southeastern Alps, the southern Dinarides and the Albanides display deformation rates at the order of 20–30 nanostrain yr−1. The Corsica–Sardinia block moves according to Eurasian Plate motions, and there is no indication that the opening of the Tyrrhenian is still active. The Pelagian and Sicilian domains are separated by a northwest–southeast discontinuity, the Sicily Channel rifted area, and marginally significant relative motion between the Pelagian Plateau and the African Plate is also observed. The southern Tyrrhenian is affected by north–south compression and accommodates up to 50 per cent of the Africa–Eurasia relative plate motion, whereas the Calabrian Arc exhibits ∼2 mm yr−1 northwest–southeast extension. The observed deformation pattern suggests the presence of a major approximately north–south tectonic discontinuity separating the Sicilian and Calabrian domains. An extensional boundary observed along peninsular Italy coincides with the distribution of seismogenic faults along the axis of the Apennines. This boundary separates a Tyrrhenian and an Adriatic domain with diverging velocities, orientated north–NNW-ward and northeastward, respectively. The Apennines are extending perpendicularly to the chain axis at rates of less than 3 mm yr−1, and only in the outer northern Apennines indications of active shortening are observed. Insignificant deformation is observed in the western Po Plain and the western Alps, while the central and eastern Alps display north–south shortening. The eastern Adriatic domain is shortening perpendicular to the Dinaric front with strain rates increasing from north to south. The locus of collision between the Aegean/Balkan system and the Adriatic and Ionian domains is marked by the Kephalonia fault system, which accommodates up to 20±1 mm yr−1 of right-lateral motion. The deformation pattern observed in the peri-Adriatic domain is well described by a counter-clockwise rotation of the Adriatic microplate around a pole located in the western Alps.

A continuous global positioning system station (CGPS) provides accurate coordinate time series, while episodic GPS stations (EGPSs), which operate throughout short measurement sessions, are generally used to improve the monitoring spatial density. In an urban environment, EGPSs are typically equipped with removable mounts (topographical tripod or bipod). In this paper, a method is proposed to evaluate vertical surface motions by means of differential measurements of removable mount EGPSs with respect to a nearby reference CGPS. For each day, the correct position of this CGPS is used as reference for the quick differential EGPS measurements to allow the correction of their positions. The method is applied to evaluate subsidence in the centre of Bologna, which is characterized by significant vertical movements, probably related to seasonal climatic effects, and where these movements differ significantly even among closely spaced locations. © 2012 Nanjing Geophysical Research Institute.

Results of observations of the Mt. Vesuvius caldera, carried out by means of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) in May 2005, October 2006 and June 2009, are reported here. In each survey the whole crater was acquired with 17/20 scans from 6 different viewpoints and the corresponding digital surface models were generated and registered into the UTM-WGS84 reference frame. In this way, a comparison between the multitemporal models leads to an evaluation of the occurred changes. The deformation maps, i.e. the contouring plots of the differences between the models along the direction of maximum variations, showed a progressive mass loss due to rock-falls from the NE vertical crater wall whose area was about 5000m2. The TLS data also showed the accumulation at the bottom. The volume loss which occurred from 2005 to 2009, was computed by subtraction of volumes defined with respect to reference planes parallel to the caldera walls and was estimated to be 20300m3. The volume uncertainties due to registration errors, subsampling noise effects, and effects due to choice of the reference plane, were also estimated. Some results were also interpreted on the basis of micro-seismic and meteorological data in order to plan a monitoring technique where seismic signals related to rock-fall and/or signals of intense rainfalls are used as alarms for fast TLS surveys able to characterize the corresponding changes of the caldera walls. The proposed methodology, in particular the simple but effective approach used in the estimation of volume uncertainties, can be applied to each rock slope instability phenomenon, regardless of the particular environment. © 2011 International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Inc. A GPS-based geodetic study at a regional scale requires the availability of a dense network that is characterized by 10 km to 30 km spacing, typically followed in a few continuous GPS stations (CGPSs) and several non-permanent GPS stations (NPSs). As short observation times do not allow adequate noise modeling, NPS data need specific processing where the main differences between NPSs and CGPSs are taken into account: primarily time-series length and antenna repositioning error. The GPS data collected in the 1999-2007 time-span from non-permanent measurement campaigns in the central Apennine area (Italy) that was recently hit by the Mw 6.3 L'Aquila earthquake (April 6, 2009) are here further analyzed to compute a reliable strain-rate field at a regional scale. Moreover, areas characterized by different kinematics are recognized, and a complete characterization of the regional-scale kinematics is attempted. These new data can be interpreted as indicators from the viewpoint of seismic risk assessment.

We use regional and local networks of continuously-operating GPS stations (CGPS) distributed in the northern–central part of the Italian peninsula to investigate the subsidence phenomenon of the Po plain sedimentary basin and vertical movements of the surrounding areas. The observations of 146 scientific and commercial stations are analyzed and compared, adopting analytical techniques widely used to study GPS coordinate time series. The use of simple antenna supports in commercial installations, instead of a more rigorous geodetic monument, does not seem to induce significant differences in the noise characteristics and in the amplitudes of annual and semi-annual periodic signals. The vertical velocity field deduced from 129 sites with observation time spans greater than one year, located in the Central–Northern Italian Peninsula, indicates the presence of two mainly subsidence areas: the Po Plain and the Arno Plain, while the sites located in the Alps and Apennine domains show relatively low uplift. The areas of the Po Plain monitored by GPS seem to indicate that the subsidence rate is constant or, in some cases, decreasing with respect to the values obtained from the last measurements, performed up to 2006 by means of both SAR and levelling techniques. Only the central part of the eastern Po Plain close to the Apennine border (Modena city area) is characterized by a peak in subsidence consisting in a velocity of about 15 mm/yr.

An efficient procedure is proposed to define realistic lower limits of velocity errors of a non-permanent GPS station (NPS), i. e., a station where the antenna is installed and operates for short time periods, typically 10-20 days per year. Moreover, the proposed method is aimed at being independent of standard GPS data processing. The key is to subsample appropriately the coordinate time series of several continuous GPS stations situated nearby or inside the considered NPS network, in order to simulate the NPS behavior and to estimate the velocity errors associated with the subsampling procedure. The obtained data are used as lower limits to accept or correct the error estimates provided by standard data processing. The proposed approach is applied to data from the dense, non-permanent network in the Central Apennine of Italy based on a sequence of solutions for the overlapping time spans 1999-2003, 1999-2004, 1999-2005 and 1999-2007. Both the original and error-corrected velocity patterns are used to compute the strain rate fields. The comparison between the corresponding results reveals large differences that could lead to divergent interpretations about the kinematics of the study area. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

The availability of a GPS network of 10-20 km mean size, provides good topographical support for the measurement of ground displacements, even at a local scale such as a landslide. In particular, a series of multitemporal kinematic or rapid-static GPS acquisitions of a landslide allows a good characterization of its displacements if the measurements are referred to a GPS reference network. Nevertheless, a wider network formed by stations located at long distances, for example at several tens of kilometers, characterized by large spacing, can lead to results affected by high noise, degrading the accuracy of final point positions. In order to obtain an adequate GPS reference network, some virtual reference stations (VRSs) can be introduced, even if a network refinement based on VRS cannot reach the same accuracy of a real local network. Some experiments, including measurements on a real landslide, have been performed in order to evaluate the performance of this technique. The results point out that the standard deviation of the obtained solutions is about two or three times larger than those which can be reached using a real local network.

SUMMARY The Western Mediterranean displays a complex pattern of crustal deformation distributed along tectonically active belts developed in the framework of slow oblique plate convergence. We used earthquake and Global Positioning System (GPS) data to study the present-day kinematics and tectonics of the Africa-Eurasia plate boundary in this region. Crustal seismicity and focal mechanisms, analysed in terms of seismic moment release and seismic deformation, outline the geometry of major seismic belts and characterize their tectonics and kinematics. Continuous GPS data have been analysed to determine Euler vectors for the Nubian and Eurasian plates and to provide the global frame for a new Mediterranean GPS velocity field, obtained by merging continuous and campaign observations collected in the 1991‐2005 time span. GPS velocities and displacements predicted by the Nubia-Eurasia rotation pole provide estimates of the deformation accommodated across the tectonically active belts. The rather simple deformation occurring in the Atlantic region, characterized by extension about perpendicular to the Middle Atlantic and Terceira ridges and right-lateral motion along the Gloria transform fault, turns into a complex pattern of deformation, occurring along broader seismic belts, where continental lithosphere is involved. Our analysis reveals a more complex fragmentation of the plate boundary than previously proposed. The roughly E-W trending mainly compressive segments (i.e. southwestern Iberia, northern Algeria and southern Tyrrhenian), where plate convergence is largely accomodated across rather localized deformation zones, and partially transferred northward to the adjacent domains (i.e. the Algero-Balearic and Tyrrhenian basins), are interrupted by regions of more distributed deformation (i.e. the Rif-Alboran-Betics, Tunisia-Libya and eastern Sicily) or limited seismicity (i.e. the Strait of Sicily), which are characterized by less homogeneous tectonics regimes (mainly transcurrent to extensional). In correspondence of the observed breaks, tectonic structures with different orientation interfere, and we find belts with only limited deformation (i.e. the High and Middle Atlas, the Tunisian Atlas and the offshore Tunisia-Libya belt) that extends from the plate boundary into the Nubian plate, along pre-existing tectonic lineaments. Our analysis suggest that the Sicilian-Pelagian domain is moving independently from Nubia, according to the presence of a right-lateral and extensional decoupling zone corresponding to the Tunisia-Libya and Strait of Sicily deformation zone. Despite the space variability of active tectonic regimes, plate convergence still governs most of the seismotectonic and kinematic setting up to the central Aeolian region. In general, local complexities derive from pre-existing structural features, inherited from the tectonic evolution of the Mediterranean region. On the contrary, along Calabria and the Apennines the contribution of the subducted Ionian oceanic lithosphere and the occurrence of microplates (i.e. Adria) appear to substantially modify both tectonics and kinematics. Finally, GPS data across the Gibraltar Arc and the Tyrrhenian-Calabria domain support the hypothesis that slab rollback in these regions is mostly slowed down or stopped.

The space-time distribution of deformation in the central Mediterranean area suggests that the Adriatic domain (Adria) has moved coherently with Africa up until the late Miocene and that, subsequently, it decoupled from Africa (Nubia) and underwent a clockwise (CW) rotation with respect to Eurasia. This event was determined by the westward push of the Anatolian- Aegean-Balkan system, after its collision with the southern Adriatic continental domain. The CW rotation of the Adria microplate induced a strong compressional regime in the central Mediterranean region, which can account for the major tectonic events that occurred in this zone since the late Miocene. These include the renewal of accretionary activity in the Apenninic belt, the opening of the central Tyrrhenian basin, the detachment of the Iblean microplate from mainland Africa and the development of a major fracture in the northern Adriatic foreland. The CW rotation of the Adria plate came to an end around the late Pliocene-early Pleistocene due to the collision of the Adria continental domain with the Southern Apennines. After this event, Adria has undergone a slow CCW rotation with respect to Eurasia. This kinematic pattern during the last evolutionary phase is suggested by the distribution of Quaternary deformation in the peri-Adriatic zones, in particular the shortening recognized at the eastern (Dinarides-Hellenides) and northern (southern Eastern Alps) boundaries of Adria, and is consistent with the seismological and geodetic evidence in the Adriatic and peri-Adriatic regions. No significant recent deformation can be recognized between Adria and Africa, at the Pliocene decoupling zone or at any other possible decoupling tectonic belt. This suggests no, or at most very little, relative motion between these two domains during the Quaternary. The possible implications of this last evidence on Nubia-Eurasia kinematics are discussed.

GPS, digital photogrammetry and laser scanning techniques have been applied and compared in the frame of the studies of two complex landslides located in the Emilia-Romagna Region (Northern Italy). The three approaches, characterized by different accuracies, applicability and costs, have demonstrated to be efficient tools to define Digital Elevation Models computed in the same reference system and able to provide data on the landslide motion. The results described in the paper indicate the present low level of landslide activity in recent years. Reliability, costs and execution times of the applied surveying methods are shown and discussed in this paper.
