This paper studies the malacofauna of four sediment cores collected in an old cove of the Tinto-Odiel estuary (SW Spain) to establish the chronology and spatial extent of MIS-1 transgression in this area. The paleoenvironmental interpretation based on facies analysis and the malacological record point to an evolution from a Miocene marine substrate to a final anthropic filling. During the late Pleistocene?-lower Holocene, this substrate was eroded by the fluvial network and alluvial sediments were deposited. During the maximum of the MIS-1 transgression (~ ca 6.5–5.4 kyr BP), this area was flooded and malacofauna is revealed as an excellent proxy of this transgression. Mesolittoral paleoenvironments dominated by the gastropod Peringia ulvae characterized the inner zones of the cove, while phanerogam meadows with abundant specimens of the gastropod Bittium reticulatum developed in the outermost areas. During the last 5400 years, this cove was progressively covered by marshes, although some mesolittoral paleoenvironments persisted until 4000 years BP.

The multidisciplinary analysis (dating, texture, total mineralogy) of two deep cores collected in the Donana National Park (SW Spain) allows to distinguish the main features of three tsunami deposits found in three different paleoenvironmental scenarios (TSU-1: inner area of an open lagoon; TSU-2: inner area of a restricted lagoon; TSU- 3: outer area of a restricted lagoon). The main textural feature of the inner lagoonal tsunami deposits is the increase in bioclastic sands, while the outer TSU-3 is composed almost entirely of medium and fine sands without bioclasts. The mineralogical analysis of TSU-1 and TSU-2 reveals a decrease in phyllosilicates in the basal layers of these tsunami deposits and a parallel increase of quartz, feldspars, dolomite and sometimes calcite. Silica is the main component of TSU-3, whose mineralogical composition changes progressively due to the action of tidal currents in the inlet lagoon on which it is deposited. This rich- SiO2 outer tsunami deposit is derived from the erosion of the adjacent aeolian systems, while the inner TSU-1 and TSU-2 were generated by the transport of bioclastic sands from the outermost parts through the lagoon (TSU-1), or through a nearby tidal channel (TSU-2).

Well-preserved tracks of the wild boar Sus scrofa are described from the Matalascañas Trampled Surface (MTS) in the upper Pleistocene aeolian basal unit of the El Asperillo Cliff, Huelva (southwestern Spain). These are the first published tracks of suid pigs in the fossil record, here formally described as Suidichnus galani igen. and isp. nov. A revision of valid artiodactyl ichnogenera is provided for comparison. The large size of wild boar found in the Late Pleistocene of Spain contradicts the general trend towards smaller size known for the evolution of the species and the Bergmann's ecogeographical rule for the extant subspecies. In the present case, the remarkable large size that can be reached by these tracks is discussed as an ecomorphological adaptation of wild boars to either resource bonanza, and/or predation pressure during the Last Interglacial. The large S. scrofa scrofa identified in MTS corresponds to some of the earliest evidences known to this subspecies in Iberia.

The southwestern Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula presents an important Roman heritage that includes numerous fish-salting workshops, with an industrial activity that went on for almost a millennium (1st century BC-7th century AD). Nevertheless, a future broad research is still necessary to determine the geologic substratum on which they are based, their palaeoenvironmental evolution, their main economic objectives and the byproducts derived from their activities. This paper is focused on the geology, dating and the archaeological record of La Cascajera, a new site located in the Tinto-Odiel estuary (SW Spain). This new cetaria occupied the northwestern end of La Cascajera ridge (Saltés Island), constituted by sandy, bioclastic deposits of previous washover fans (1st-2th centuries AD). During the main period of activity (middle of 4th century AD-5th century AD), the existence of a certain typology of amphorae as well as the documentation of a shell deposit formed mostly by Glycymeris suggest that this factory was oriented to the production of mixed fish sauces and the handling of edible bivalves. The main features of this deposit (texture, paleontology, taphonomy) could be used to differentiate middens from natural shelly ridges, La costa suratlántica de la Península Ibérica posee un importante legado romano que incluye numerosos talleres halieúticos, con una actividad que se desarrolló durante casi un milenio (siglo I a.C.-siglo VII d.C.). Esta nueva cetaria ocupaba el extremo noroccidental de la cresta de La Cascajera (Isla de Saltés), constituida por depósitos bioclásticos arenosos de abanicos de derrame previos (siglos I-II d.C.). Durante su principal periodo de actividad (mitad del siglo IV d.C.-siglo V d.C.), la existencia de una cierta tipología de ánforas así como la existencia de un conchero formado principalmente por Glycymeris sugieren que esta factoría estaba dedicada a la producción de salsas mixtas de pescado y la extracción de bivalvos comestibles. A multidisciplinar analysis of sediments collected in diferent environments of the Doñana National Park (Guadalquivir estuary, SW Spain) provides an overview of the textural, mineralogical and physico-chemical parameters that control the distribution of benthic foraminiferal tests in this Biosphere Reserve. These microorganisms are absent in the fne quartzitic sands that constitute the substrate of temporary ponds with brief hydroperiods located in the dune systems and spits, as well as in other ponds with low conductivities or hypersaline conditions located in the inner marshlands or near the Guadalquivir river banks. Dead benthic foraminifera are mainly found on phyllosilicate-rich, silty-clayey substrates. The taphonomic analysis of the main species (Ammonia tepida, Haynesina germanica, Trochammina infata, Entzia macrescens) points to its deposit in situ. Cluster analysis permits to delimitate six foraminiferal assemblages. Cluster II (A. tepida+H. germanica) is the dominant assemblage in the central ponds and the margins of the main channels, while cluster IV (T. infata+E. macrescens) is restricted to some ponds located on the high marsh and cluster VI (Ammonia beccarii+Quinqueloculina spp.) is abundant on external beaches. Tidal fuxes cause the transport of these last marine benthic species and some plaktonic forms both to the inner areas of the estuary and to these beaches. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

This paper investigates the paleoenvironmental evolution of a core extracted in the middle sector of the Tinto River estuary, SW Spain, one of the most polluted areas in the world due to mining over thousands of years (>4 kyr BP) and recent industrial discharges. This evolution includes alluvial sands (>6.4 cal kyr BP), bioclastic sands and silts deposited in subtidal and intertidal channels during and after the Holocene transgression maximum (6.4-4.3 cal kyr BP), the sedimentation of clayey-sandy silts in low and high marshes during the last 2.4 kyr BP and a final anthropic filling. Three sharp peaks of pollution have been detected, representing a) a natural origin during the Holocene transgression; b) the impact of the first mining activities (~4.5 cal kyr BP); and c) the effect of industrial discharge and a new period of mining activity throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Foraminifera, ostracods and molluscs disappeared during these last two peaks., Este trabajo investiga la evolución paleoambiental inferida a partir del estudio de un testigo extraído en el sector medio del estuario del río Tinto (SO de España), una de las zonas más contaminadas del mundo por actividades mineras milenarias (>4 kyr BP) y descargas industriales recientes. Esta evolución incluye arenas aluviales (>6.4 cal kyr BP), arenas bioclásticas y limos depositados en canales submareales e intermareales durante y después del máximo transgresivo holoceno (6.4-4.3 cal kyr BP), la sedimentación de limos arcillosos-arenosos marismeños durante los últimos 2.4 kyr BP y un relleno antrópico final. Se han detectado tres picos de contaminación, que proceden de: a) un origen natural durante el máximo transgresivo holoceno; b) el impacto de las primeras actividades mineras (~ 4.5 kyr BP); y c) el efecto conjunto de los vertidos industriales y un nuevo período de actividad minera durante los siglos XIX y XX. Los foraminíferos, ostrácodos y moluscos desaparecieron durante estos dos últimos picos.

Vanguard Cave is an archaeological site located on the shoreline of the Rock of Gibraltar at the south-western extreme of the Iberian Peninsula. It is part of a limestone cave system facing the adjacent Governor's Beach on the south-eastern coast of Gibraltar and has been filled to the roof with more than 17 m of sedimentary deposits. Due to its long stratified sequence, comprising rich palaeoenvironmental and faunal records as well as multiple Palaeolithic occupation layers, Vanguard Cave provides valuable information for our understanding of human behaviour and dispersal across south-eastern Iberia in general and particularly about the strategic role of the promontory of Gibraltar for past human populations. The development of a reliable absolute chronology for the sedimentary sequence at Vanguard Cave is therefore of great importance in this context. In this study, we applied optically-stimulated luminescence dating to sand-sized quartz grains from the uppermost ∼4 m of the Vanguard Cave deposits, as well as from the Hyaena Cave sediments – a small niche adjacent to the main cave chamber. We use single-grain and multiple-grain dating to clarify the depositional history of the sedimentary sequence, as well as to assess the reliability of the two dating approaches and their potential for future chronological studies at the site. The single-grain and multi-grain ages are consistent with one another and indicate no partial bleaching or post-depositional mixing of the sediments. Our results suggest that Vanguard Cave experienced continuous sediment accumulation probably since the last sea-level highstand in MIS 5, and was completely filled by ∼43 ka (MIS 3). The eastern side of the Rock of Gibraltar faced an exposed coastal shelf covered with savannah and an active coastal dune system during MIS 3. Our results indicate that similar environmental conditions are likely to have persisted also during MIS 4 and large parts of MIS 5.

This paper presents pollen analyses on hyaena coprolites from Vanguard Cave, Gibraltar, with the aim of depicting the vegetation landscapes of the southern Iberian Neanderthals during the MIS 3. The Palaeolithic vegetation in the surroundings included pine, oak, juniper, Pistacia, and mixed woodlands, savannahs, riverine forest patches, heliophytic matorrals, rocky scrub with chamaephytes and hemicryptophytes, grasslands with heaths, shrubby grasslands, steppe-like saltmarshes, and littoral vegetation. We compare our results to those of previous palaeobotanical study in the adjacent Gorham's Cave providing data for the MIS 3 and MIS 2. Placing the palaeobotanical records of Vanguard and Gorham's Caves in European context, the southern coasts of Iberia emerge as the most thermic refugium of the Late Quaternary, which has important implications for existing arguments about the long survival of Neanderthals in the Iberian Peninsula. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

The work in the inner area of Gorham’s Cave, Gibraltar, has added to the Palaeolithic art located in the cave. Although work continues on the surveying and the study of the evidence found up to now, we present here a preview consisting of a representation of a red deer, and also a hand stencil, alongside numerous marks which have been found scattered throughout the inner cave. In this paper we present new data on the Upper Palaeolithic rock art in Gorham’s Cave (Gibraltar) including direct dating of a hand stencil. Situating this dating in the archaeological context of the stencil, we conclude that it is associated with the Solutrean technocomplexe. This is particularly significant in the light of recent reviews which put European hand stencils in the context of the Early or Initial Upper Palaeolithic. In this context, the Gorham data opens the discussion on the systematic chronological correlation of all hands in negatives of European Palaeolithic rock art.

Here we report the discovery of ceramic fragments that form part of a Gorgoneion, a ceramic image representation of the Gorgon Medusa. The fragments were found in a deep part of Gorham’s Cave, well known to ancient mariners as a natural shrine, between the 8th and 2nd century BCE. We discuss the context of this discovery, both within the inner topography of the cave itself, and also the broader geographical context. The discovery is situated at the extreme western end of the Mediterranean Sea, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The location was known to ancient mariners as the northern Pillar of Herakles, which marked the end of the known world. We relate the discovery, and its geographical and chronological context, to Greek legends that situated the lair of the Gorgon sisters at a location which coin- cides with the physical attributes and geographical position of Gorham’s Cave. We thus pro- vide, uniquely, a geographical and archaeological context to the myth of Perseus and the slaying of the Gorgon Medusa.

On August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus departed from the port of Palos de la Frontera, located in a small cove in southwestern Spain, and returned to this same port on March 15, 1493. On the basis of sedimentology, geochemistry, paleontology and dating of a long core (18 m) collected in this cove, thirteen facies are distinguished in the Neogene-Holocene evolution of its sedimentary infilling, with a transition from Miocene marine environments to Late Holocene marshes, going through an intermediate period that includes fluvial gravels, alluvial sediments and shallow coastal deposits that characterize the maximum of the Fladrian transgression in this area (~6.5 cal kyr BP). These data and others contributed by historical sources allow an approximate reconstruction of this cove at the end of the 15th century.

The March 2015 extraordinary hydrometeorological event in the Andes cordillera caused severe floods in the southern Atacama Desert. One of the most affected cities was Copiapo (northern Chile) located downstream of the junction between the Copiapo river and its ephemeral tributary Quebrada Paipote. This work analyses the features of this catastrophic flood and relates them with the identified impacts. A large volume of water mixed with fine sediments overflowed the tributary channel generating a flood that affected 72% of the urban area. The rheological (velocity, density and flow regime) and sedimentary features of the flow reveal the occurrence of massive mudflows that infilled the space available inside the buildings, buried the streets with a sandy mud deposit of more than 30 cm medium thickness and collapsed the sewer network. The post-event survey carried out by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning (MINVU) was used for the development of fragility curves that allows modelling the probability of damage. Results indicate that the greatest probability of building damage is generated by the accumulation of sediments instead of by the flow depth. On the other hand, once the very fine grain sediments of the top of the deposit dried up, it increased the concentration of post-event suspension particulate matter, causing a health issue. This work highlights the need to understand mudflow processes and their consequences in arid environments to improve urban planning and mitigate future damages since their impacts strongly affect infrastructures and communities.

In 2015 an extraordinary hydrometeorological event occurred in the southern Atacama Desert (northern Chile) that resulted in a catastrophic flood in the city of Copiapo. A large volume of detrital sediments was transported downstream, provoking an economic and environmental disaster in the Copiapo Valley, a region dominated by mining activity. Loads of sediment and residues were moved by the flow and deposited throughout the urban area of Copiapo. The current study explores the geochemical features and associated pollution risks of metal(loid)s in sediments collected in different points of the city after the flood event. Results revealed that, despite the high natural concentration of elements due to geogenic chemical composition of the area, geoaccumulation of Al, As, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Fe, Mn, Ni and Pb showed moderate contamination when compared to the background concentrations of the area. Furthermore, Hg, originating from legacy mining practices, constituted the main environmental risk associated with the flood sediments. Finally, data from this study were compared to other flood events and mining spills; some contaminants in the 2015 flood sediments in Copiapo were higher than some historical mining disasters. This work highlights the potential intersection between anthropogenic activities (mining) and extreme hydrometeorological events (floods) in arid environmental degraded areas.

In recent decades, numerous studies have focused on the paleoenvironmental reconstruction of coastal areas, with special emphasis on the detection of tsunami layers. These multidisciplinary investigations usually do not study the mineralogy of the environment as well as the underlying or overlying layers.This paper analyzes the whole-rock mineralogy and clay minerals contained in seven short cores obtained in the Donana National Park (SW Spain) and deposited during the 5.000–1.500 cal. yr BP interval.The main purpose is to deduce the paleoenvironments from which the sedimentary facies present in them were formed and an approximation to the transport mechanisms involved in their formation. Results of X-ray diffraction analysis indicate that the main minerals are phyllosilicates, quartz and calcite, with smectites and illite being the most abundant phyllosilicates. According to the whole-rock mineralogy and additional statistical procedures (correlation, cluster analysis), the main source of quartz is the erosion of Donana spit, while the Guadalquivir river, its tributaries and the old lagoon have contributed mainly with smectite-rich phyllosilicates. On the contrary, waves, tides and high-energy events introduced illite and bioclasts in an old lagoon from the nearby shallow marine sectors. Consequently, the mineralogical analysis is revealed as an interesting tool for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction in this area, since it varies between different sedimentary environments. In addition, the combined study of whole-rock and clay mineralogy detects the tsunami layers and the provenance of their sediments in the studied cores.

This paper presents pollen analyses and radiocarbon dating on Crocuta coprolites from Las Ventanas (LV) and Carihuela (Car) Caves in southern Spain (Granada), with the aim of reconstructing the environmental conditions of these hominin sites. The LV coprolites are radiocarbon dated from c. 37,890 to 6980 cal yr BP, and the Car coprolites from c. 31,063 to 7861 cal yr BP. Overall, the palaeoecological scenario inferred from both coprolite series display similar patterns, with Pinus, Poaceae, and Artemisia as dominant during the full Pleistocene, and an important contribution of Quercus in the most recently dated coprolite samples. While the palynology is consistent with results of former investigations on the past environments in the region as obtained from other deposits (peat bogs, cave infills), the Late Glacial and Holocene chronology of several coprolites in both sites is in conflict with the generally accepted timing of extinction of Crocuta in western Europe. A discussion on the taphonomical processes and potential sources of carbon contamination of the radiocarbon samples is provided. The correlation between pollen from coprolites and from sedimentary records, and the paucity of the fossil bone record suggests nevertheless, that a late survival of Crocuta in southern Spain should not be categorically discarded.

The aeolian Pleistocene deposits recorded in the Rock of Gibraltar (S Iberian Peninsula) present a significant sedimentary thickness that fills the wide sea caves and covers its steep slopes. In Catalan Bay these deposits register the development of cliff-foot and rampant dunes that form a 35° sand ramp, 1 km long and up to 300 m in height formed by moderately to well-sorted sands, slightly carbonated and weakly cemented. This morphosedimentary evidence is associated with MIS 5−2 sea level fluctuations. Its internal structure shows lamination sets of 2–3 m in thickness and planar and trough cross-bedding. In these beds, five morphotypes of mammalian footprints have been recognized in vertical cross sections and convex hyporeliefs. Most of them present a moderate degree of conservation due to the poor cementation of the sands. These icnites are related to the activity of terrestrial mammals, possibly belonging to Homininae, Proboscidea, Artiodactila and Carnivora. The affinity between the footprints and their tracemakers has been established in the basis of their physical parameters, the shape of the footprints, their comparison with similar footprints and the correlation with the fossil fauna of vertebrates described for the Late Pleistocene in Gibraltar. These findings represent the first palaeoichnological record in the aeolian sediments of Gibraltar and indirectly corroborate the occupation of the coastal dune landscape by several terrestrial mammals during the Late Pleistocene. In addition, they help reconstructing the animal behaviour and interaction with the extensive dune systems that developed at the foot of the Rock slopes. El análisis multidisciplinar de un perfil descubierto por las tormentas invernales en el litoral del Parque Nacional de Doñana ha permitido reconstruir la evolución de su sector occidental durante el Holoceno superior. Se han definido 3 fases que reflejan el paso desde una marisma de aguas salobres (FA-1) a una laguna de aguas dulces transformada en turbera (FA-2), para finalizar con el depósito de cordones dunares (FA-3)., The multidisciplinary analysis of a profile discovered by the winter storms on the coast of the Doñana National Park has allowed us to reconstruct the evolution of its western sector during the Late Holocene. Three phases have been defined, which reflect the transition from a brackish water marsh (FA-1) to a freshwater lagoon transformed into peat bog (FA-2), to end with the deposit of dune systems (FA-3).

Las investigaciones geomorfológicas y arqueológicas que actualmente se están desarrollando en el Paraje Natural Marismas del Odiel - reserva de la Biosfera por la UNESCO-, especialmente en el cordón arenoso de La Cascajera, han ofrecido interesantes resultados que permiten retomar los estudios sobre la ocupación del litoral onubense en época romana desde un punto de vista diacrónico en el tránsito del bajo imperio hacia la tardoantigüedad. A este respecto son numerosas las factorías pesqueras (cetariae) que jalonan la costa más occidental de la antigua Provincia Baetica y en las cuales, ahora tras un proceso de revisión, se pueden intuir o comprobar momentos de ruptura y recuperación en sus explotaciones que habría que poner en relación con eventos marinos catastróficos (EWE) que, de manera histórica, han afectado a estas costas.

A multidisciplinary analysis of Holocene sediments from Saltés Island (Tinto-Odiel estuary, SW Spain) has allowed to differentiate eigth sedimentary facies, according to their textural characteristics, internal structure, paleontology and archaeological content. Its interpretation and the chronological datings carried out reconstruct a transition from a sandy tidal plain to a final occupation by a Roman salting (cetaria) between the 1st century BC to 5th century A. This evolution includes the deposit of washover fans derived from high-energy events between the 1st century BC to 3th century AD. The integration of these new data with others from previous research has allowed partially complete the palaeoenviromental reconstruction of the marine domain of the Tinto-Odiel estuary., El análisis multidisciplinar de sedimentos holocenos procedentes de la isla Saltés, situada en el estuario de los ríos Tinto y Odiel (SO de España), ha permitido diferenciar ocho facies sedimentarias, de acuerdo a sus características texturales, estructura interna, contenido paleontológico y restos arqueológicos presentes. Su interpretación y las dataciones cronológicas efectuadas han permitido reconstruir una transición desde una llanura mareal arenosa a la ocupación final de la zona por una factoría romana de salazones (cetaria) entre los siglos I BC y V AD. Esta evolución incluye el depósito de washover fans derivados de la acción de eventos de alta energía entre los siglos I BC y III AD. La integración de estos nuevos datos con otros procedentes de investigaciones previas ha permitido completar parcialmente la reconstrucción paleoambiental del dominio marino del estuario de los ríos Tinto y Odiel.

The south of Iberia conserves an important group of Palaeolithic rock art sites. The graphisms have been mostly attributed to the Solutrean and Magdalenian periods, while the possibility that older remains exist has provoked extensive debate. This circumstance has been linked to both the cited periods, until recently, due to the transition from the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic in the extreme southwest of Europe as well as the non-existence of some of the early periods of Palaeolithic art documented in northern Iberia. This study presents the results of interdisciplinary research conducted in Las Ventanas Cave. These results enabled us to identify a new Palaeolithic rock art site. The technical, stylistic and temporal traits point to certain similarities with the range of exterior deep engravings in Cantabrian Palaeolithic rock art. Ventanas appears to corroborate the age attributed to those kinds of graphic expression and points to the early arrival of the Upper Palaeolithic in the south of Iberia. Importantly, the results provide information on the pre-Solutrean date attributed to trilinear hind figures. These findings challenge the supposed Neanderthal survival idea at one of the main late Middle Palaeolithic southern Iberian sites (Carigüela) and, due to the parallels between them and an engraving attributed to this period in Gibraltar, it raises the possibility of interaction between modern humans and Neanderthals in the extreme southwest of Europe. This circumstance has been linked to both the cited periods, until recently, due to the transition from the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic in the extreme southwest of Europe as well as the non-existence of some of the early periods of Palaeolithic art documented in northern Iberia. This study presents the results of interdisciplinary research conducted in Las Ventanas Cave. These results enabled us to identify a new Palaeolithic rock art site. The technical, stylistic and temporal traits point to certain similarities with the range of exterior deep engravings in Cantabrian Palaeolithic rock art. Ventanas appears to corroborate the age attributed to those kinds of graphic expression and points to the early arrival of the Upper Palaeolithic in the south of Iberia. Importantly, the results provide information on the pre-Solutrean date attributed to trilinear hind figures. The major changes that occurred in the southwestern estuaries of the Spanish Atlantic coast during the last 6500 yr BP were simultaneous to human settlement and therefore the understanding of their coastal evolution will help interpreting human patterns in these areas. The study of the morpho-sedimentary features of new outcrops appearing in the middle sector of Saltés Island (Huelva Estuary, Spain) has been used to develop a model to understand the complex evolution of sand barriers than can be applied to similar inlets along the Atlantic Iberian coast. The first human settlements (6000–4000 yr BP) in the early Huelva Estuary (Tinto and Odiel rivers) were located in the ancient coastal banks or in the nearby hills. From 4000 yr BP onwards, the estuarine sediments started to emerge as sand barriers and chenier plains, prograding towards the mouth. As the littoral strands stabilized morphologically, they were colonized by human settlements in successive periods, the oldest inland (Almendral) and more recent outward (Cascajera). The study of the upper sedimentary layers of La Cascajera barrier display a tempestitic sequence of landward progradational washover-fans. The calibrated and modelled AMS dates in marine shells provide a storminess time range between the second half of first century BCE and the entire first century CE. Sedimentary records are useful to evaluate environmental changes, either from natural or anthropogenic causes, such as global and climate change. The interrelationship between the archaeological findings (mainly salting fish factories and old ports) and the morpho sedimentary evolution at the mouth of the Tinto and Odiel rivers allows us to highlight not only the Huelva Estuary's dynamics evolution, but also the possible regional patterns of human habitation from the beginning of the present sea-level highstand (middle Holocene). The analysis of shell deposits eroded by a ebb-tide channel on Saltes Island (Tinto-Odiel estuary, SW Spain) resulted in the identification of a new shell midden, associated with the activity of a nearby Roman factory over the 4th-5th centuries CE. This midden differs from other old shell deposits (sandy tidal flats, cheniers, washover fans) in several features: a) its malacological content, dominated by edible species (mainly the bivalve Glycymeris nummaria) and differentiated by statistical analysis; b) a partial selection and better conservation of Glycymeris nummaria (Linnaeus), its most abundant species; c) the absence of microfauna, which implies a previous washing to its final deposit; and d) an age concordant with the one deduced from the Roman amphoraic remains found in this area and subsequent to the washover fans on whom it was deposited. All these features, together with the absence of both anthropic fractures or cooking, would indicate that this Roman shell midden was the end result of a trawling on subtidal Glycymeris-rich sandy bottoms with adjacent grasslands, where the gastropod Bittium reticulatum (da Costa) was the most abundant mollusc. This gastropod is the dominant species in the remaining shell deposits.

Estuaries are very sensitive ecosystems to human activities and the natural evolution of their drainage basins located upstream. Pollution derived from human activities, such as historical mining or recent industrial wastes, can significantly affect their environmental quality. This paper analyzes the silver and copper contents of four cores extracted in two estuaries of SW Spain. Its chronology and vertical evolution allow to differentiate the effects of several pollution episodes (natural, Roman, 19th-20th centuries) on its different sedimentary environments in the last 6 million years. Possible future applications are included in the fields of environmental management or even education.

The Rock of Gibraltar, at the south-western extreme of the Iberian Peninsula and 21. km from the North African coast, is a 6-km long limestone peninsula which was inhabited by Neanderthals from MIS 5e until the end of MIS 3. A total of 8 sites, either with Neanderthal fossils or their Mousterian lithic technology, have been discovered on the Rock. Two, Gorham's and Vanguard Caves, are the subject of ongoing research. These caves are currently at sea level, but during MIS 3 faced an emerged coastal shelf with the shoreline as far as 5. km away at times. They hold a unique archive of fauna and flora, in the form of fossils, charcoal and pollen, helping environmental reconstruction of now-submerged shelf landscapes. In addition, geological and geomorphological features - a 300-metre dune complex, elevated aeolian deposits, raised beaches, scree, speleothems - complement the biotic picture.The work is further complemented by a study of the ecology of the species recorded at the site, using present-day observations. The species composition in this fossil record closely matches the present day fauna and vegetation of the Doñana National Park, SW Spain: a mosaic of pine groves, coastal dunes, shrubland and seasonal wetlands and currently the richest reserve in terms of biodiversity in the Iberian Peninsula, located only 100. km to the northwest from Gibraltar.All this information permits, for the first time, the quantification of the vegetation structure of the ancient coastal plain and the modelling of the spatio-temporal dynamics of the MIS 3 coastal shelf off Gibraltar

This paper reviews the sedimentological and geomorphological imprints of prehistoric and historical tsunamis in the four main estuaries of SW Spain. These imprints include beach erosion, filling of intertidal channels, deposition of bioclastic layers, washover fans and reworked aeolian sheets and the breaching of spits and tombolos. Most of these imprints were caused by the 218-209. BC and AD. 1755 tsunamis, although evidence of other tsunamis has been identified. In these two events, effects on human populations were severe and diverse, such as human loss of life, changes in coastal settlements and international borders, damage to port infrastructure or flooding of marsh and inhabited areas. New radiocarbon reservoir data were included in order to obtain an approach to the recurrence period of these high-energy events (700-1000. years) in this area. The Tinto River shows very high concentrations of toxic elements and acidity from its source in the mining area to its mouth. In this paper, we studied the evolution of the levels of toxic elements during part of the Quaternary from the analysis of fluvial deposits that, forming terraces, were originated by the dynamics of the Tinto River. Using a detailed geomorphological cartography, up to nine terrace levels were differentiated in the lower sector of the basin, whose ages range from the Pleistocene to the Holocene. Sampling and geochemical analyses (major elements and trace) were carried out in six of these levels, in addition to sediments of the current flood plain. The results of these analyses do not show any bias from the mid Pleistocene (T8 - Terrace 8) to the early Holocene (T1). Moreover, these geochemical contents are similar to the average values obtained by other authors for the entire South-Portuguese Zone of the Iberian Massif. However, the current sediments of the Tinto River (T0) show a sharp increase in the levels of As, Cu, Pb and Zn compared to the rest, which indicates a serious increment of contamination by toxic elements. The Last Interglacial is considered the most suitable episode from which to infer patterns of rapid sea-level change since its climatic conditions were similar to those of the present interglacial. However, specifying the true position of its sea level with high accuracy is very troublesome in the absence of sedimentological, erosional or even palaeontological markers. This study investigates the morphosedimentary evidence (beach deposits, cliff, notch and shore platform) of two highstands registered and dated during MIS 5 stage by U-series dating in the North of Morocco (Strait of Gibraltar). Bioerosive notches and mixed siliciclastic and carbonate deposits, high energy beaches with algal bioherms, were formed in coastal environments during MIS 5a. A sea-level height of + 10 m asl can be inferred for this substage. The record of MIS 5e substage is less defined in the geomorphological record, consisting of backshore/foreshore deposits located at + 13 to + 15 m asl. A tectonic uplift rate of ~ 0.1 mm/yr has been estimated for the last 130 kyr. These data are consistent with models of coastal uplifting calculated for the Strait of Gibraltar.

article i nfo This study utilizes geomorphology, marine sediment data, environmental reconstructions and the Gorham's Cave occupational record during the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition to illustrate the impacts of climate changes on human population dynamics in the Western Mediterranean. Geomorphologic evolution has been dated and appears to be driven primarily by coastal dune systems, sea-level changes and seismo-tectonic evolution. Continental and marine records are well correlated and used to interpret the Gorham's Cave sequence. Specific focus is given to the three hiatus sections found in Gorham's Cave during Heinrich periods 4, 3 and 2. These time intervals are compared with a wide range of regional geomorphologic, climatic, paleoseismic, faunal and archeological records. Our data compilations indicate that climatic and local geo- morphologic changes explain the Homo sapiens spp. occupational hiatuses during Heinrich periods 4 and 3. The last hiatus corresponds to the replacement of Homo neanderthalensis by H. sapiens. Records of dated cave openings, slope breccias and stalactite falls suggest that marked geomorphologic changes, seismic activ- ity and ecological perturbations occurred during the period when Homo replacement took place.

The uranium-series method is applied to date relic flowstone from karstic mountains in the south of Spain. Geomorphological mapping shows three staircased erosion surfaces with a typical karst landform. Exhumed flowstones fill the surficial palaeosinkholes and open fractures. Some of the samples analysed were impure carbonates consequently the leachate–leachate method was used to obtain activity ratios in the carbonate fraction. The ages obtained range from 34.4 ky to 266 ky and are grouped in four periods: 30–50 ky, 90–110 ky, 150 ky and 230–270 ky. All these periods are related to the warm climate oxygen isotope stages 3 and 5. Practically all locations present secular equilibrium in uranium isotopes.

Gorham’s Cave (Gibraltar) is currently the site with the most recent dates for Neanderthal presence in the world. The stratigraphy of late Neanderthal occupation of Gorham’s Cave is dated between 33 and 24 ka BP. This paper presents the analysis of the lithic industry from these statigraphic levels. This study establishes that this assemblage is undoubtedly Mousterian.

Although hardly applied to human palaeoecology, bird fossils offer a unique opportunity for quantitative studies of the hominin habitat. Here we reconstruct the Homo habitat niche across a large area of the Palaearctic, based on a database of avian fauna for Pleistocene sites. Our results reveal a striking association between Homo and habitat mosaics. A mix of open savannah-type woodland, wetlands and rocky habitats emerges as the predominant combination occupied by Homo across a wide geographical area, from the earliest populations of the Lower Palaeolithic to the latest hunter-gatherer communities of the Upper Palaeolithic. This observation is in keeping with the view that such landscapes have had long standing selective value for hominins.

On the basis of mineralogy, chemical and palaeontological data collected in a long core (93 m) three associations of facies are distinguished in the Late Pleistocene–Late Holocene evolution of the sedimentary infilling in nowadays Donana National Park. From the lower, middle and upper associations of facies three sedimentological phases have been established. In the oldest phase (> 44 kyr BP), this area was occupied by supratidal, freshwater marshes located close to a brackish lagoon and inundated suddenly by brackish-marine inputs. The following phase (44–7 kyr BP) is characterized by the transition from supratidal to intertidal conditions, with the alternation of freshwater or brackish marshes situated very close or in the margin of the former lagoon and submitted to episodes of desiccation or tidal inundation. The last phase (7–3.0 cal kyr BP) comprised: a) a marine inundation during the maximum of the Flandrian transgression (∼ 7–6.5 cal kyr BP); and b) the progressive infilling of a brackish lagoon with marine connection and permanent fresh water inputs (6.5–3.5 cal kyr BP), partially enclosed by the Donana spit. The phyllosilicate-rich, clayey–silty sequence of this latter infilling is interrupted by tsunami-like deposits at 4.2–3.6 cal kyr BP and 3.6–3.0 cal kyr BP. These high-energy events are characterized by textural (bimodal grain-size distribution, sorting decrease), mineralogical (crystallochemical changes in illites, increasing dolomite content) and geochemical changes (Ti anomaly), besides a sudden introduction of marine bivalves and microfauna and a strong decrease or the almost disappearance of the brackish ostracode assemblage. Ages of these deposits coincide with those indicated for other tsunamigenic layers detected in the southwestern Spanish coasts and some deep cores collected near the African–European plate boundary.

This review analyses the ostracod record in Holocene tsunami deposits, using an overview of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami impact on its recent populations and the associated tsunamigenic deposits, together with results from numerous investigations of other Holocene sequences. Different features such as the variability of the local assemblages, population density, species diversity, age population structure (e.g., percentages of adults and juvenile stages) or taphonomical signatures suggest that these microorganisms may be included amongst the most promising tracers of these high-energy events in marshes, lakes, lagoons or shallow marine areas.

Integrated analysis of a 50-m long sedimentary core collected in the central part of the Odiel estuary (SW Atlantic coast of Spain) allows delineation of the main paleoenvironmental changes that occurred in this area during the Holocene. Eight sedimentary facies were deposited in the last ca . 9000 years BP, confirming a transgressive–regressive cycle that involves the transition from fluvial to salt marsh deposits with intermediate marine tidal deposits. A storm event is detected at ca . 5705 14 C years BP (mean calibrated age) with distinct lithostratigraphical, textural, geochemical, and palaeontological features.

Four phases are distinguished in the Mid-Holocene evolution of the southwestern Donana National Park (SW Spain), based on the multidisciplinary study of sediments in drill cores. In the oldest phase (> 5500–5400 cal. years BP), a coastal, brackish lagoon occupied the central part of the study area, partly enclosed by the Donana spit and limited by fluvial levees. An evolution from subtidal to intertidal conditions characterized the areas located close to the inner side of the Donana spit during the same phase. The following phase (∼5400–5200 cal. years BP) is characterized by a high-energy event (tsunami?), which caused the breakthrough of the Donana spit and the creation of new littoral strands in the inner areas. In the first period of the third phase (∼5200–4200 cal. years BP), estuarine infilling was probably the dominant process, with the accumulation of phyllosilicate-rich clays in the lagoon bed. This was followed by a renewed phase of instability (∼4200–4100 cal. years BP) indicated by the presence of fine storm-lain deposits and thicker, probably tsunami-induced shelly deposits. The last phase (∼4100–3700 cal. years BP) comprises: a) an infilling period, with a diminution of the marine influence; and b) two new high-energy events, which caused the erosion of the Donana spit and the creation of new cheniers. In the last 7000 years, the comparison of these results with a revision of both geological and historical records has revealed the occurrence of twenty tsunamis (at least) during this period in Portugal and southern Spain. Evidences of these high-energy events are washover fans, bioclastic coarse-sized layers within salt marsh deposits or the presence of giant boulders and pebbles. The determination of the recurrence period is very difficult owing to the very scarce data, although our data and other authors do not discard a possible periodicity of 2000 years for a cycle of two events separated by 300–400 years.

Homo species were exposed to a new biogeochemical environment when they began to occupy caves. Here we report the first evidence of palaeopollution through geochemical analyses of heavy metals in four renowned archaeological caves of the Iberian Peninsula spanning the last million years of human evolution. Heavy metal contents reached high values due to natural (guano deposition) and anthropogenic factors (e.g. combustion) in restricted cave environments. The earliest anthropogenic pollution evidence is related to Neanderthal hearths from Gorham's Cave (Gibraltar), being one of the first milestones in the so-called “Anthropocene”. According to its heavy metal concentration, these sediments meet the present-day standards of “contaminated soil”. Together with the former, the Gibraltar Vanguard Cave, shows Zn and Cu pollution ubiquitous across highly anthropic levels pointing to these elements as potential proxies for human activities. Pb concentrations in Magdalenian and Bronze age levels at El Pirulejo site can be similarly interpreted. Despite these high pollution levels, the contaminated soils might not have posed a major threat to Homo populations. The production of purposely made painted or engraved designs on cave walls-a means of recording and transmitting symbolic codes in a durable manner-is recognized as a major cognitive step in human evolution. Considered exclusive to modern humans, this behavior has been used to argue in favor of significant cognitive differences between our direct ancestors and contemporary archaic hominins, including the Neanderthals. Here we present the first known example of an abstract pattern engraved by Neanderthals, from Gorham's Cave in Gibraltar. It consists of a deeply impressed cross-hatching carved into the bedrock of the cave that has remained covered by an undisturbed archaeological level containing Mousterian artifacts made by Neanderthals and is older than 39 cal kyr BP. Geochemical analysis of the epigenetic coating over the engravings and experimental replication show that the engraving was made before accumulation of the archaeological layers, and that most of the lines composing the design were made by repeatedly and carefully passing a pointed lithic tool into the grooves, excluding the possibility of an unintentional or utilitarian origin (e.g., food or fur processing). This discovery demonstrates the capacity of the Neanderthals for abstract thought and expression through the use of geometric forms.

The application of the regional marine 14 C reservoir effect (Δ R ) to obtain an accurate calibration of conventional marine shell 14 C dates requires prior research concerning the oceanographic conditions and the Δ R of that region. Here I present a new calibrated dataset using accurate Δ R values and I recommend that the conclusions obtained by Rodriguez-Ramirez and their collaborators be revised, as J. Rodriguez-Vidal, F. Ruiz and L.M. Caceres proposed in their comment.

The sedimentary units described constitute the La Vinuela Formation, situated at the eastern end of the Colmenar Depression. The lowest unit, formed of massive continental breccias, has been interpreted as arising from slope deposits of ‘sturzstrom’-type or rock avalanches. Higher up, progressive subsidence resulted in a terrigenous-carbonated series, typical of marine material. It is a transgressive sequence, formed in an extensional synorogenic basin, associated with the first episode of Neogene rifting in the Betic Cordilleras. The direction of extension is deduced as N-S.

Doñana Natural Park is a good global example of the sedimentary filling of a broad tidal estuary during the Mid-Late Holocene, after the last postglacial sea-level rise. The timing of this rise is not well defined yet in the Gulf of Cádiz, since the oldest evidence of coastal sedimentation, located at the right bank of the mouth of the old Guadalquivir Estuary, dates back to ca. 5,000 years ago. The first evolutionary stages of the embayment indicate an obvious marine influence, dominated by waves and storms from the SW. Since ca. 4,000 years ago, protection provided by the growing coastal spit barrier of Doñana favored the development of a sheltered marsh dominated by tides and fluvial currents. About 2,200 years ago, since the time Romans controlled the area, the estuary was dominated by marshlands with a wide lagoon at its mouth (Lacus Ligustinus), and the current landscape of Doñana started to form. The evolution of the last 2,000 years includes the quick and continuous growth of coastal barriers by longshore drift, the origin of the present-day marshland landscape and the development of dune fields migrating inland towards the wetlands.

article Standardizing the signature of tsunami deposits has been identified as a major limitation for the identifica- tion of paleo-tsunami deposits. This limitation mostly arises from the strongly source-dependent nature of these deposits, which in turn determines their composition and depositional architecture, and from the effect of the local morphology of the corresponding depositional environment. Here, we provide new high- resolution mineralogical, geochemical and micro/macrofauna data of the 1755 tsunami layer of Boca do Rio estuary (Algarve, Portugal) with the aim of unraveling the signatures of estuarine tsunami deposits and linking them to possible sediment sources. We also apply for the first time diffuse reflectance spectropho- tometry (DRS) analysis. Our results show that the 1755 tsunami deposit of the Boca do Rio estuary is featured by an enhancement in Sr and Ca, which are linked to the input of biogenic and detrital carbonates (shell frag- ments and limestone clasts) from the beach foreshore and a strong depletion in most terrestrial- and marine-sensitive indicators. The latter is interpreted as resulting from the reworking of the estuarine clays and subsequent dilution within a huge volume of sand eroded from the coastal barrier. It confirms that in the case of the Boca do Rio estuary, the sediment source is essentially proximal and coastal. Textural and min- eralogical features between the base and the top of the tsunami layer suggest the imprint of run-up and back- wash currents derived from a unique wave. Micro and macrofauna analysis and DRS data of the siliciclastic fraction show slight but significant environmental changes occurring just after the tsunami, which could be provoked by an eventual closure of the estuary mouth.

U-Series dating method is applied to speleo thems from Los Covachos Cave in the south of Spain. A combination of solvent extraction method with ion exchange resins is used for uranium and thorium isotopes. Uranium concentrations are low and for younger samples correction by detrital contamination is necessary. Ages obtained range from 30 to 135 ky with a hiatus between 50 and 80 ky BP. Changes in uranium isotopes activity ratios indicate a change in climatic conditions.

Evidence of the AD 1755 tsunami consisting of the same type of accretions produced by the re-deposition of earlier sediments, has been recorded at three different height along the coast of Gibraltar: Along a shallow sandy shore, the tsunami wave reached a run-up of 2–3 m, whereas along steep, cliff–lined shores (Rosia Bay) it surpassed 5 m. An overwash deposit was also identified at the bottom of a lagoon (The Inundation), at 0.5 m b.s.l., on the isthmus that joins the Rock with the mainland. Southern submerged platforms (Vladi’s Reef) were also affected by the erosional backwash to a depth of 22 m. The tsunamigenic sediments exhibit a bimodal granulometry, mainly composed of sands with a coarser fraction composed of marine faunal shells remains, together with larger clasts derived from the rocky substrate. All remobilized sediments were dated by historical methods and radiocarbon dating. Se han registrado evidencias del tsunami de 1755 localizadas a tres alturas diferentes a lo largo de la costa de Gibraltar, todas ellas como resultado del mismo tipo de acreción producida por el re-depósito de sedimentos previos. A lo largo de las costas bajas y arenosas estudiadas, la ola del tsunami alcanzó una altura de 2 a 3 m, mientras que en litorales acantilados y con fuertes pendientes sobrepasó los 5 m. Se ha identificado un posible registro sedimentario en el fondo de una laguna costera (Inundation), a 0.5 m b.n.m., en el istmo que une la Roca con el continente. Por otro lado, las plataformas sumergidas, como la meridional de Vladi’s Reef, sufrieron erosión por la retirada de las olas a una profundidad de hasta 22 m. Los sedimentos tsunamigénicos poseen una granulometría bimodal, compuesta principalmente de arenas con una fracción más gruesa de restos de conchas marinas, junto con cantos mayores de rocas provenientes del sustrato. Cortés-Sánchez, Miguel et al., Numerous studies along the northern Mediterranean borderland have documented the use of shellfish by Neanderthals but none of these finds are prior to Marine Isotopic Stage 3 (MIS 3). In this paper we present evidence that gathering and consumption of mollusks can now be traced back to the lowest level of the archaeological sequence at Bajondillo Cave (Málaga, Spain), dated during the MIS 6. The paper describes the taxonomical and taphonomical features of the mollusk assemblages from this level Bj19 and briefly touches upon those retrieved in levels Bj18 (MIS 5) and Bj17 (MIS 4), evidencing a continuity of the shellfishing activity that reaches to MIS 3. This evidence is substantiated on 29 datings through radiocarbon, thermoluminescence and U series methods. Obtained dates and paleoenvironmental records from the cave include isotopic, pollen, lithostratigraphic and sedimentological analyses and they are fully coherent with paleoclimate conditions expected for the different stages. We conclude that described use of shellfish resources by Neanderthals (H. neanderthalensis) in Southern Spain started ~150 ka and were almost contemporaneous to Pinnacle Point (South Africa), when shellfishing is first documented in archaic modern humans., The works at Bajondillo Cave and the shellfish harvesting in the Natural Park of Maro-Cerro Gordo were approved by the Junta de Andalucía (Spain). Between 218 and 209 BC, the western coasts of Iberia suffered the impact of a historical tsunami, with an epicentre probably located in the Atlantic Ocean near the Cape St. Vincent area (SW Portugal). Palaeogeographical changes in the River Guadalquivir estuary, the ancient Roman Lacus Ligustinus, have been recorded in erosional and depositional landforms, both stratigraphically and as landscape relicts. The tsunamigenic waves (run-up of w5 m) and their subsequent backwash eroded the previous littoral spits transversally, generating rectilinear cliffs and incisions. The littoral foredunes were also eroded and reactivated as transgressive dunes over the edge of the marshes. Former coastal sediments (w520e100 BC) generated overwash deposits, ebb tide deltas and sand sheets within the estuary, as well as a subsequent bioclastic beach on the lagoon shore, defining the post-tsunami (130 BCe80 AD) estuarine shoreline (Roman lagoon). Some coastal pre-Roman (7th to 3rd centuries BC) human settlements were abandoned, and later, in the Roman period (1st century AD), saltworks were installed. Morphological and sedimentological changes in the coast triggered by this event were similar or greater than the changes in coastal features related to the AD 1755 Lisbon tsunami.

Two coastal sites in Gibraltar, Vanguard and Gorham's Caves, located at Governor's Beach on the eastern side of the Rock, are especially relevant to the study of Neanderthals. Vanguard Cave provides evidence of marine food supply (mollusks, seal, dolphin, and fish). Further evidence of marine mammal remains was also found in the occupation levels at Gorham's Cave associated with Upper Paleolithic and Mousterian technologies [Finlayson C, et al. (2006) Nature 443:850–853]. The stratigraphic sequence of Gibraltar sites allows us to compare behaviors and subsistence strategies of Neanderthals during the Middle Paleolithic observed at Vanguard and Gorham's Cave sites. This evidence suggests that such use of marine resources was not a rare behavior and represents focused visits to the coast and estuaries.

8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table., The stratigraphy of the late Neanderthal occupation of Gorham's Cave, Gibraltar, between 33 and 24 ka BP, the latest known site of Neanderthal occupation, is discussed. Level IV at Gorham's Cave exclusively records Neanderthal occupation and is characterised by Mousterian technology and a sequence of 22 AMS dates. The overlying Level III is Upper Palaeolithic, and the earliest diagnostic culture is the Solutrean at around 18.5 ka BP. A dating interval of over four thousand years separates these two horizons. The ecological and bioclimatic characteristics of the site are considered as an explanation for the late survival of the Neanderthals in the region.

In Europe the extinction of the Neanderthals, firmly associated with Mousterian technology, has received much attention, and evidence of their survival after 35 kyr BP has recently been put in doubt2. Here we present data, based on a high-resolution record of human occupation from Gorham’s Cave, Gibraltar, that establish the survival of a population of Neanderthals to 28 kyr BP. These Neanderthals survived in the southernmost point of Europe, within a particular physiographic context, and are the last currently recorded anywhere. Our results show that the Neanderthals survived in isolated refuges well after the arrival of modern humans in Europe., We thank all those who have participated in this project.
