The article aims at presenting the exact means of tourism education for pupils and university students. We described the methodology of tourism prospective research, marking tourist tracks and designing cartographic publications for the project region of the historical Maramures. The presented facts are useful for pupils, university students/graduates from tourism programmes of study, bachelor or master level, in order to develop skills that are specific to the tourism activities. This article is basically a case study and it relies on actual activities implemented during the project "Maramures-Transcarpathia Info Tour", financed through The Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine Cross Border Cooperation Programme ENPI 2007-2013, project in which high school and university students, from tourism programmes of study, got involved as volunteers.

The current study proposes a comparative approach of two forms of non-formal educational activities: the school trip and the scientific educational academic trip with their similarities and differences regarding both tourist and pedagogical levels. In order to acquire this goal the following objectives have been set: analysing a geographical-tourist itinerary, analysing the involved tourist services, analysing the trip planner for the specified itinerary, analysing certain teaching activities, differentiated based on the level of study (pre-university/superior), analysing students and undergraduates' worksheets after they have been completed according to the requirements. Consequently a series of similarities have appeared between the school trip and the academic trip, especially related to the theme, purpose, evaluation form, participants' involvement degree, structure and integrated tourist elements (from attractions to services). On the other hand, the main differences that were highlighted, starting with educational level, age difference, and participants' number have had repercussions on the quantitative and qualitative particularities of the tasks and last but not least, on the evaluation product (students' portfolios and undergraduates' trip notebooks).

This paper presents an embryo of a literary guide on the Carnation Revolution to be explored for educational historical excursions other than leisure and tourism. We propose a historical trail through the centre of Lisbon, city of the Carnation Revolution, called "Walk through the Revolution." The trail aims to reinforce collective memory about the major events that occurred in the early moments leading to the coup. The trail is made up by nine places of rememberance, for which literary excerpts are suggested and which are supported by a digital research procedure. A set of seven fixed and observer-independent categories are used to analyse the literary contents of 23 literary works published up to 2013. These literary works refer to events that happened between the eve of April 25 and May 1, 1974. At the same time, literary descriptions are explored using a spatial approach in order to define the literary geography of the most iconic military actions and popular demonstrations that occurred in Lisbon and the surroundings. The literary geography and the cartography of the historical events are then compared. Data analysis and visualization benefit from the use of standardised and quantitative methods, including basic statistics and geographic information systems.

Although social studies or language arts classes may offer more natural settings for "global studies," the author's students have engaged in projects demonstrating that mathematical topics can work well at furthering the goal of increasing students' cultural literacy. The author describes one project here, where students working in groups use trigonometry, Google Earth™, and Google Maps™ to design walking tours of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Project work involving mathematics and using twenty-first-century skills (collaboration, communication, information skills, global awareness) helps prepare students for a diverse workplace. These projects count as a win for everyone.

The article analyses and defines the concept of educational tourism, presents the structure of the concept and looks into the opportunities for using educational tourism in geographical education. In order to reveal such opportunities a research was carried out in the Lithuanian national and regional parks using the qualitative method of content analysis and the quantitative method of questionnaire survey. The authors of the research identified the educational excursion activities conducted in the national and regional parks and established the areas of geography in which such activities could be used. The questionnaire survey analysed the current situation in the area of educational activities. The research into the variety of educational excursions in the Lithuanian national and regional parks confirmed opportunities for the integration of educational tourism and geography.

Although Michigan is often called the "Wolverine State," its more common nickname is the "Great Lakes State." This name comes from the fact that Michigan is the only state in the United States that borders four of the five Great Lakes. Also referred to as the "Water Wonderland," Michigan has 11,000 additional lakes, 36,000 miles of streams, and 199 waterfalls. It is said that someone could stand anywhere in Michigan and be within six miles of a lake or stream and within 85 miles of the Great Lakes. The name Michigan itself comes from the Chippewa word, "michi-gama," meaning "large lake." In this article, the author features Virginia, a state of contrasts--from the suburbs of Washington, District of Columbia, in northern Virginia to the Great Dismal Swamp in the south and from the scenic mountaintops in the west to the beachside resorts along its eastern shore. Virginia became a state in 1788, the tenth state to join the Union. Virginia's complex story is closely tied to the story of the United States, but it also has several chapters all its own. The author discusses the state's geography, its tidewater, Piedmont and the mountain and valley regions of Virginia. A brief history of Virginia is included.

New Mexico, a state of brown plains and sand deserts, is nicknamed "The Land of Enchantment." One reason is that the very starkness of the land adds to its enchantment. Another reason is that the rich history of the state has resulted in a landscape filled with remnants of the Pueblo people, Spanish colonizers, and Mexican settlers.

August 21, 2009, marks the 50th anniversary of the entry of the 50th state into the United States of America. All the states have their stories, but as a string of islands in the vast Pacific Ocean, more than 2,000 miles from any other land mass, Hawai'i has a story that is unique in many ways. Consider, for example, that Hawai'i has two official languages, English and Hawaiian. In this article Hawaiian words are spelled following the accepted method of including the "okina" (a backwards apostrophe indicating a glottal stop) and the "kahako" (a macron over the vowel indicating that it is lengthened). Perhaps more importantly, one calls Hawai'i the "Aloha State" for good reason. Although the word "aloha" is used to say "hello" as well as "good-bye," its basic meaning is "love, affection, kindness"--something people in Hawai'i earnestly try to show to each other and extend to Hawai'i's many visitors.

This article describes a four-credit semester program at Elliot Lake Secondary School in the late 1990s. This New Trails program is based around physical education and leadership, geography, Native studies, and English credits. The students are outside much of the time. The students become certified in the use of GPS and in map and compass work, and earn accreditation in chain saw use, ORCA Tripping I, Basic Flatwater, Basic Kayaking, WHIMIS, Skidder/Cutter operator's license, Pleasure Craft operator's card and Wilderness First Aid. They have used these skills to fundraise for the program, for example by cutting trees for a local home. Students also engage in a two-week co-op placement with local municipalities and tourism businesses to prepare for work in the growing eco-tourism sector. Finally, the program integrates elements common to many four-credit semester Outdoor Education programs, including cross-country and downhill skiing, fitness, and a culminating canoe trip. The program also has the support of local Aboriginal professionals, and includes a weekly sharing circle led by a certified addictions counsellor. (Contains 2 footnotes.)

This study examines a Victorian geographical card game entitled "The Counties of England" published by Jaques & Son. Advertised as highly instructive and educational, it was designed to teach children about the principal towns in each county, their products and notable buildings. The aims of the study were to discover whether the information printed on the cards accurately reflected the towns' main features and if the number of cards allocated to each county was representative of its population size. The study found that many towns included in the first edition of the game were accurately represented, but later issues, despite some modification, carried somewhat outdated information. Counties with large populations were also generally allotted more cards. Several factors were identified as possibly influencing which towns were selected and how they were presented, including tourist appeal, the card designer's interests and knowledge and the rules and conventions of the game.

Over the last decade, some UK Geography Departments have diversified their range of courses to offer Foundation degrees (Fds), providing students with alternative routes through higher education (HE). These courses are delivered either offsite at further education colleges (FECs), embedded within an undergraduate programme at higher education institutions (HEIs), or by work-based learning. These pathways present students, staff and institutions with new opportunities, issues and challenges. This study examines contrasting pathways of offsite and onsite Fds in Tourism Management and Development Geography offered by two HEIs and two FECs in southwest England. The needs and experiences of Fd students are varied, related to the individual's personal and academic background, the course pathway taken, institution-specific issues and the degree of support and preparedness for HE. The contrasting academic cultures, teaching methods and assessments encountered in FECs and HEIs, and the availability of resources, raise generic and specific issues, such as confidence building and learning to become independent and autonomous learners, which challenge Geography and Tourism students during their academic careers. This study concludes that closer collaboration between the HEI and the partner FEC is necessary for Geography and Tourism courses, and highlights the need for better alignment and reinforcement of HE systems in FECs, for instance through fieldwork, and the offering effective induction and support in study skills. Finally, it is important to facilitate the smooth transitions of students "topping-up" to Year 3 of an Honours degree at the parent HEI. Managers of undergraduate courses in Geography and associated subjects can also learn from the vocational and contextualized learning promoted by Fd courses and direct entry students to undergraduate courses. German Geography textbooks are structured using the principle of "Systematic Geography based on a regional example" that is predominant in Germany. Compared to other macroregions such as Europe, North America, Africa, or Asia, however, Australia is presented less frequently in school textbooks. Those textbooks which deal with Australia do not convey comprehensive information on the country, but rather touch upon certain topics that are deemed characteristic of Australia by the authors or are stipulated in the curriculum. A quantitative analysis of the frequency and level of detail of the topics pertaining to Australia that are covered reveals that most textbooks present five higher-order topics in the following order: ethnic groups and their dynamics in the social hierarchy, deterministic factors of natural geography, the potential of natural spaces and value-added utilisation thereof in the context of economic development, life in the outback, and finally the endemic flora and fauna. The unique natural conditions have generated an economically significant tourism industry which must establish and maintain an ecologically acceptable foundation despite a growing population. The textbooks endeavor to present a realistic image of Australia. Because of the topics selected and the overemphasis of individual facts practiced to date, however, cliches and stereotypes have arisen, which to a certain extent distort the image of modern Australia. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the field project and the field experiences of 60 undergraduates in a lower level geography course. Cumulative based learning was the main teaching technique. The Eisenhower Center, the Dickinson County Historical Society Museum, and Old Abilene Town, a renovated/reconstructed frontier town, were selected for study. The focus was on determining the appeal of each attraction by the undergraduate cohort and increasing that appeal. As a result of this field experience, students gained a much clearer understanding of the challenges facing those attempting to market tourism successfully in small towns, as well as participating in a practical application of geographical concepts previously discussed in class.

This article introduces the Special Issue on unsettling geographies of tourism. The overarching aim of this collection of articles is to bring together critical and creative analyses that help destabilize tourism's relationship to settler colonialism. In this Introduction, we provide an overview of literature on geographies of settler colonialism and tourism, which works to situate the 'unsettling' agenda in relation to the decolonial and Indigenous geographies and the respective contributions of each article in the Special Issue. We also review the ethics of care and decolonizing approach that oriented our process of peer reviewing articles, understanding that peer review is fraught with practices of erasure, exclusion, and prescription and that decolonizing tourism geographies must include intentional practices of transforming our individual and collective responsibilities to each other and with the lands and waters from which scholarship originates. Towards the end of our Introduction, we present a summary of each article that amplifies and synthesizes their respective contributions to unsettling tourism geographies knowledge and research. Tourism geographers in Anglo-American geographical departments are transitioning into teaching and research tourism in applied schools and departments, such as business, resource and environment, and even cultural and creative industries. Because of pressure related to national research assessment and funding, tourism geographers are not encouraged to continue undertaking serious theoretical research related to their mother discipline, instead transitioning to conducting applied research and publishing in hybrid journals. Although such changes in tourism geographers' research behavior are frequently discussed internationally, they have not been assessed and reported in academic contexts within Asia, particularly Taiwan. This study aimed to investigate the research behavior of tourism geographers regarding the differences between those who are staffed in geography departments and those who transition to applied departments such as tourism and recreation, resource and environment, and others. Their research behavior is examined in terms of publishing journals, paradigmatic approaches, research types, research methods, and geographical scales based on content analysis of articles published by tourism geographers in geography and tourism and recreation departments. The results revealed that there are significant differences in the research behavior of tourism geographers between different departments. Finally, this paper explains the differences in terms of Taiwan's changing social and economic conditions, the academic traditions and politics of the geography and applied departments, the research habits and preferences of tourism geographers among departments, and other aspects. In this introduction to the special issue, The new tourism geopolitics, we call on scholars to bridge tourism geographies and political geography through the framework of tourism geopolitics. The issue offers novel conceptualizations that extend beyond the study of material borders, passports, and nation-state discourses. Rather, the authors of this issue home in on the entanglements between tourism and geopolitics in the form of events, everyday interactions, ideologies, political economies, and celebritized people and places. The introduction outlines several increasingly pressing questions around the geopolitics of tourism, ones that for too long have been marginal in tourism geography and relatively ignored in political geography. We further identify how political maneuvers at international and domestic, state and non-state, and macro and micro levels trigger the proliferation of geopolitical dilemmas for tourism practices, policies, and flows. The eleven papers in this curated collection offer critical points of departure for bringing tourism and political geographies together to reveal discordant relations of power and oppression in tourism. In doing so, the introduction and papers that follow compel us to account for the significance of tourism in the intimate and extraordinary geopolitical structures of power that shape our lives and our world. The study had addressed the museum tourism in Egypt from point of view of geography, by monitoring charactaristics of the tourist supply of museums; as well as analyize the features of the tourist demand of museums. Methodology was based on the topical-regional approach and the quantative technique under a cartographic framework using the Arc-GIS and Excel; it also used a questionnaire to complete the unavailable data. The main results of the study are that: the museum supply is divided into three regions: the core (Cairo, Giza, and Alexandria), semi- peripheries (Luxor, Aswan, Sharkia, Port Said, Matroh, and al-Wadi al-Gadid) and peripheries (the rest of Egyptain governorates); the main demand of museum tourism is: the domestic market, Asian market and European market. There are eight underwater hotels in the world. Drawing from our on-site observations and reflections, in this paper we discuss how one of them, Singapore's Equarius Hotel, may at first be understood as a heterotopia – a concept coined by Michel Foucault to denote a fully realized utopia. However, we will argue that our original concept of alloútopia (from the Greek alloú, for elsewhere, and topia, for place) is better suited to make sense of the more-than-human dynamics shaping underwater hotel rooms and the human-animal encounters taking place therein. We develop our original concept by drawing from contemporary geographical literature on heterotopias, and more-than-human geographies of aquatic animal encounters. This article investigates instances in which mobility justice is highlighted in post-disaster tourism in eastern Tohoku, Japan, a coastal area almost completely destroyed by the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami. After this unprecedented disaster, some of these towns have directed their recovery efforts toward the development of post-disaster tourism as a means to counteract outmigration and loss of jobs. By using the broader frame of mobility justice in tourism and geographies of affect, this article seeks to showcase how affective relations between people and post-disaster places, and between international tourists and locals, can foster a better understanding of the big and small injustices enacted at different scales in the area. In particular, this article focuses on the potential of 'recognition justice' to rebalance the scale between top-down policies and local needs. Post-disaster tourism performances utilize the mobility of information through global media, spreading survivors' narratives, stories, and images. A politics of affect built around landmarks in the post-disaster landscape the tsunami has contributed to the creation of immobile nodes, which become locus of contestations and opportunities to leverage mobility justice and broader recognition justice for the local populations. Elite schools, long tasked with creating a future national elite, often now find themselves competing in a global education market. This article explores how one such school, in Switzerland, articulates with the global imaginary of its local geography – in particular, with images of luxury tourism and safety – to appeal to a globally wealthy clientele. It unpacks the material benefits derived from this articulation, for both the institution itself and the individuals who attend it. The school, I argue, fostered a 'club effect' that enhanced the social and symbolic capital of (most of) its students, brought into relief by the scholarship students who were excluded from it. This article thus explores what kind of work is being done when a particular vision – that of wealth – is attached to a school, and for whom that work is done. We explore neighborhoods in Southern California from 1980 to 2010 that exhibit persistent racial diversity (PRD) and the consequences of this PRD. Initial exploratory analyses show that the racial composition of the area surrounding the neighborhood in 1980 is associated with which neighborhoods become PRDs. Our primary analyses compare how PRD neighborhoods change over time (1980–2010) based on several socio-demographic measures to a matched group of non-PRD neighborhoods that had similar characteristics in 1980. The key finding is that PRD neighborhoods improved more on per capita income and percent in poverty compared to their matched tracts from 1980 to 2010. We also found that there was not a single route to persistent diversity, but rather a myriad of pathways through which racial/ethnic diversity can persist over a long time period at the neighborhood level.

This study investigates the asymmetric effects of international and domestic tourism on economic complexity worldwide. Despite the significant contributions of international and domestic tourism to a country's economic activities, their potential impacts on economic complexity remain underexplored in the literature. Using the Dynamic Fixed Effects Autoregressive Distributed Lag (DFE ARDL) model, this research estimates the short- and long-term effects of domestic and international tourism on economic complexity for 123 economies from 1995 to 2018. The empirical analysis reveals that domestic tourism spending has an insignificant negative impact on economic complexity in the short term. However, in the long run, it exerts a significant positive effect, suggesting that domestic tourism could be a powerful driver of the long-term geography of economic activities. In contrast, international tourism contributes to economic complexity in the short term, but its long-term impact is less significant. These findings affirm the instrumental role of tourism development in enhancing economic complexity and underscore the importance of a balanced approach to tourism development, considering its short‐ and long‐term effects on economic complexity. Geographical names, including speleonyms, which were once not registered in official sources, have been preserved in the form of missing words or errors in the Russian language. Therefore, the task of their collection and systematization is fixed by many resolutions of the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and other authorized bodies. One of the issues of determining the ways of implementing the project "sacred geography of Kazakhstan" and the direction of research work is aimed at restoring the names of caves. The purpose of the study is to identify the features of the formation of cave names on the territory of Kazakhstan and the geographical prerequisites for their restoration. Research objectives: to determine the role of physical and geographical conditions of Kazakhstan in the formation of speleonyms; to reflect the patterns and areas of cave distribution in Kazakhstan and to analyze the geographical aspects of the formation of speleonyms; analysis of geographical aspects of the formation of speleonyms; determination of the place of speleonyms as tourist and recreational objects; making proposals for the preservation of caves and Speleonyms of Kazakhstan. The object of the study is caves and other underground parts distributed on the territory of Kazakhstan as special objects of the sacred regions of the country, the subject of the study is the conditions and meaning of the formation of the names of these caves, their geographical prerequisites and opportunities for restoration. The caves will be of great interest from a geomorphological, hydrological, bio-speleological, archaeological and paleozoological point of view. California is widely seen as a climate and environmental policy leader in the U.S. and beyond. However, allowing local land use decisions to proceed as usual represents a major gap in the state's climate policy framework. Climate mitigation rules and formulae are utilized to claim zero net emissions for large-scale land development at the urban fringe. Such developments continue to destroy habitats and radically transform landscapes. Newhall Ranch, a subdevelopment at the edge of urbanized Los Angeles County, has claimed emissions offsets such that the development of 60,000 homes will have less than zero greenhouse gas emissions. Offsets largely rely on using disadvantaged communities, and significant threats to endangered species on site are compensated by payments to the project's environmental opponents. The net result is land development as usual, with a veneer of solarization and investments in GHG mitigation projects with poor quantification and verification. This situation demonstrates the enduring structures of land use development that drive GHG emissions and environmental change, and calls for stronger requirements for local compliance with state emissions-reductions targets.

As tourism linked to fiction in all its forms has developed strongly, national television productions have become important stimuli for domestic tourism. This is the case of contemporary French television series, both daily soaps (Plus belle la vie, Un si grand soleil, etc.) and crime series (Meurtres à..., Crimes en....) produced by the public service. This article sheds light on the transition in French television fiction from an interest in history (during the 1960s-1980s) to an interest in « territories ». They are now full-fledged agents in the fiction, even first in the writing of the scenarios (the place is chosen before the plot is elaborated), because the objectives are operations of promotion and territorial marketing. This study is based on the analysis of the crime series Meurtres à... co-produced by France 3 and RTBF since 2013. The fictionalization of the space of these « territories », their activities and their stories, tales and legends therefore participates in new geographical narratives, likely to be part of tourism practices as well as residential choices.

This article analyzes the spontaneous production of graffiti art and murals covering the entrances of businesses in the central business district of Oakland, CA, in the wake of the global protest movements, in 2020, against state violence and systemic racism. I argue that the art made legible what gets hidden through the violent processes of gentrification, neoliberal urbanism, and displacement/dispossession. The paper rethinks what borders, policing, and reclamation mean in a time of economic instability and a global health crisis, through the placement of these vernacular expressions in Downtown Oakland. What is revealed through the art is the convergence of two co-constitutive publics–a segregated, decaying city mostly inhabited by poor and working-class Black and Latinx residents and laborers, and a modern, prosperous, neoliberal city that caters to a privileged class of white residents and tourists–especially as the city grappled with the management and regulation of public space in the midst of a global pandemic. The article thus theorizes public space as layered and always contested, and not simply a space of conflict but also collective engagement.

Tourism development allows the enhancement of the heritage of local cultural resources, expressing the territorial potential. The Systematic Literature Review shown in this paper highlight the relationship between "cultural heritage" and "tourism". The current state of the art and the specific relationships between the contents of the selected publications demonstrate that tourism is an indispensable tool in local communication and cultural promotion policies and strategies.
