Topographically induced Alpine regional groundwater flow systems below the unconsolidated valley fillings constitute a substantial unused geothermal resource. Within the framework of the INTERREG VB project GRETA (shallow geothermal energy in the Alpine region), we developed a method to quantify the groundwater flux of complex alpine aquifers. The basis of the study is a regional-scale hydraulic groundwater model, which is based on a 3D tectonic model of the Davos region in Switzerland. Based on data from a large pumping test, we were able to calibrate the hydraulic model and to calculate basics for various usage scenarios of energetic exploitation for the Arosa Dolomite aquifer. Favourable conditions for an energetic exploitation are related to large-scale topography differences between groundwater recharge and potential exfiltration areas in the valleys, thanks to the 3D geometry of the large-area tectonic nappe units with their root zone located within river valleys. In general, the proposed concept could be applied to manifold similar geological and hydrogeological settings of the Alpine belt.

The ontogeny of the structures involved in sound generation and modulation in dolphins was investigated through a comparison of the soft nasal structures of foetal, perinatal, neonatal and adult specimens of Pontoporiidae, Phocoenidae and Delphinidae. Foetal samples were sectioned at 10 µm in the saggital and coronal planes, and stained for histological examination. Computed tomography and magentic resonance imaging scan series were combined with new data to represent the ontogenetic stages of the three groups. The images were analysed in 3D-Slicer to characterize the general head topography. The origins of the melon and the vestibular air sac were detected between Carnegie stages C16 and F22. The three groups analysed showed distinct formation of the nasal plug and nasal plug muscles, mainly with regard to the loss of fat pathways (or their maintenance in Pontoporiidae) and the development of the nasal plug muscles on both sides (during perinatal development of Phocoenidae) or just on the left side (during postnatal development in Delphinidae). Broadband vocalizing delphinidans might have evolved under heterochronic events acting on the formation of sound-generating structures such as the rostrum and vestibular air sacs, and on the transformation of the branches of the melon, probably leading to a reduced directionality of the sonar beam.

In regional scale aquifers in the Rhine Valley and Tabular Jura east of Basel (Switzerland), the groundwater circulation was investigated using regional-scale geological and hydraulic 3D models. The main aquifers in the area comprise the Quaternary aquifer of unconsolidated gravel deposits along the River Rhine and its tributaries, as well as the regional scale karst aquifer within the Upper Muschelkalk. Land subsidence, a process likely associated with salt solution mining, indicates further subordinate groundwater bearing segments and complex groundwater interactions along fault zones. In the aquifer systems we investigated, regional-scale groundwater circulation was simulated and visualized in relation to the geological settings. Lithostratigraphic units and fault structures were parameterized and analyzed, including the sensitivity of hydraulic properties and boundaries. Scenario calculations were used to investigate the sensitivity that the aquifer systems had to hydraulic parameter changes during Quaternary aggradation and degradation in the main valley. Those calculations were also done for base-level changes in the Rivers Rhine and Birs. For this purpose, this study considered probable historic base-levels before river regulation occurred, and before river dams and power plants were constructed. We also focused on scenarios considering increased groundwater recharge rates, e.g. due to exceptional long-lasting precipitation, or heavy rainfall events in the catchment area. Our results indicate that increased groundwater recharge rates in the catchment areas during such events (or periods) are associated with orders of magnitude increases of regional inflow into the Upper Muschelkalk karst aquifer. Furthermore, the groundwater fluctuations and groundwater saturated regions within the karst aquifer shift to places where high densities of sinkholes are documented. When the surface water base-levels adapt to probable historic levels, it leads to increased hydraulic gradients (i.e. local lowering of the groundwater level by up to 7 m). Those increased gradients are associated with increased groundwater flow within some aquifer regions that are particularly prone to karst development.

The favorable overall conditions for the utilization of groundwater in fluvioglacial aquifers are impacted by significant heterogeneity in the hydraulic conductivity, which is related to small-scale facies changes. Knowledge of the spatial distribution of hydraulically relevant hydrofacies types (HF-types), derived by sedimentological analysis, helps to determine the hydraulic conductivity distribution and thus contribute to understanding the hydraulic dynamics in fluvioglacial aquifers. In particular, the HF-type “open framework gravel (OW)”, which occurs with the HF-type “bimodal gravel (BM)” in BM/OW couplings, has an intrinsically high hydraulic conductivity and significantly impacts hydrogeological challenges such as planning excavation-pit drainage or the prognosis of plumes. The present study investigates the properties and spatial occurrence of HF-types in fluvioglacial deposits at regional scale to derive spatial distribution trends of HF-types, by analyzing 12 gravel pits in the Munich gravel plain (southern Germany) as analogues for outwash plains. The results are compared to the reevaluation of 542 pumping tests. Analysis of the HF-types and the pumping test data shows similar small-scale heterogeneities of the hydraulic conductivity, superimposing large-scale trends. High-permeability BM/OW couples and their dependence on recognizable discharge types in the sedimentary deposits explain sharp-bounded small-scale heterogeneities in the hydraulic conductivity distribution from 9.1 × 10−3 to 2.2 × 10−4 m/s. It is also shown that high values of hydraulic conductivity can be interpolated on shorter distance compared to lower values. Karst aquifers provide drinking water for 10% of the world’s population, support agriculture, groundwater-dependent activities, and ecosystems. These aquifers are characterised by complex groundwater-flow systems, hence, they are extremely vulnerable and protecting them requires an in-depth understanding of the systems. Poor data accessibility has limited advances in karst research and realistic representation of karst processes in large-scale hydrological studies. In this study, we present World Karst Spring hydrograph (WoKaS) database, a community-wide effort to improve data accessibility. WoKaS is the first global karst springs discharge database with over 400 spring observations collected from articles, hydrological databases and researchers. The dataset’s coverage compares to the global distribution of carbonate rocks with some bias towards the latitudes of more developed countries. WoKaS database will ensure easy access to a large-sample of good quality datasets suitable for a wide range of applications: comparative studies, trend analysis and model evaluation. To sustainably plan the use of subsurface resources, a discussion about thermal management is needed, as well as a more coordinated and efficient thermal use of subsurface resources. This contribution outlines a theoretical consideration for how to effectively manage urban subsurface resources. The consideration is made by means of assessing the heat-potential from urban groundwater resources against the background of heat-demand. We illustrate that, in principle, the heat-potential of subsurface resources could be directly ‘mined’ to exploit them and store thermal ‘waste energy’. We show how quantitative flow- and heat-transport modeling approaches can offer a scientific basis for thermal management strategies. In combination with geographic information systems, evaluating heat-potential and heat-demand can become the basis for management concepts as well as for the overall economic and ecological thermal planning of subsurface resource usage. An index which relates groundwater heat-potential to heat-demand is introduced here. This index allows us to quantify the share that thermal ‘waste energy’ from groundwater resources could have to satisfy heat-demand. On the one hand, we demonstrate how the spatial distribution of this index can be derived for the urban area of Basel, Switzerland. On the other hand, we exemplify the temporal evolution of the heat-potential for selected urban areas and discuss the capacity for space heating with a typical annual heat-demand profile.

The shallow subsurface in urban areas is increasingly used by shallow geothermal energy systems as a renewable energy resource and as a cheap cooling medium, e.g. for building air conditioning. In combination with further anthropogenic activities, this results in altered thermal regimes in the subsurface and the so-called subsurface urban heat island effect. Successful thermal management of urban groundwater resources requires understanding the relative contributions of the different thermal parameters and boundary conditions that result in the “present thermal state” of individual urban groundwater bodies. To evaluate the “present thermal state” of urban groundwater bodies, good quality data are required to characterize the hydraulic and thermal aquifer parameters. This process also involved adequate monitoring systems which provide consistent subsurface temperature measurements and are the basis for parameterizing numerical heat-transport models. This study is based on previous work already published for two urban groundwater bodies in Basel (CH) and Zaragoza (ES), where comprehensive monitoring networks (hydraulics and temperature) as well as calibrated high-resolution numerical flow- and heat-transport models have been analyzed. The “present thermal state” and how it developed according to the different hydraulic and thermal boundary conditions is compared to a “potential natural state” in order to assess the anthropogenic thermal changes that have already occurred in the urban groundwater bodies we investigated. This comparison allows us to describe the various processes concerning groundwater flow and thermal regimes for the different urban settings. Furthermore, the results facilitate defining goals for specific aquifer regions, including future aquifer use and urbanization, as well as evaluating the thermal use potential for these regions. As one example for a more sustainable thermal use of subsurface water resources, we introduce the thermal management concept of the “relaxation factor”, which is a first approach to overcome the present policy of “first come, first served”. Remediation measures to regenerate overheated urban aquifers are also introduced. The transferability of the applied methods to other urban areas is discussed. It is shown that an appropriate selection of locations for monitoring hydraulic and thermal boundary conditions make it possible to implement representative interpretations of groundwater flow and thermal regimes as well as to set up high-resolution numerical flow- and heat-transport models. Those models are the basis for the sustainable management of thermal resources.

Swelling of clay-sulfate rocks is a feared problem in tunneling in such rock, causing heave of the tunnel invert and leading to swelling pressures that seriously damage the tunnel lining. Prediction of the swelling potential of rocks in different tunnel sections and tools to evaluate measures that aim at reducing the swelling risk would be a major aid for designers of tunneling projects and rehabilitation works in order to respond adequately to the swelling problem. The study presents a hydrogeological approach to assess the swelling potential of clay-sulfate rocks in tunneling, using the Belchen tunnel in Switzerland as a case study. It shows that this approach can be applied to complex geological settings using structurally consistent 3D numerical models to simulate groundwater flow influenced by tunneling. The models are in particular used to evaluate hydraulic measures that aim at preventing or minimizing water inflow into clay-sulfate rocks after tunneling. Analyzed hydraulic measures include pumping shafts connected to the tunnel drainage, sealing structures applied to the rock zone around the tunnel damaged by the excavation process (excavation damaged zone), as well as groundwater level drawdown in aquifers crossing the tunnel. A sensitivity study addresses model uncertainties and evaluates the impact of model parameters on the swelling potential. Promising measures include the installation of pumping shafts in tunnel sections of clay-sulfate rocks at the border to aquifers and permeable fault zones. The study shows that monitoring of hydraulic heads as well as of groundwater volumes drained by the tunnel would increase the predictive capability of the models. Presented results are site specific. However, the approach to assess the swelling potential of clay-sulfate rocks in tunneling, and to assess hydraulic measures to respond to the swelling problem, can be transferred to other tunneling projects.

Climate change will have both quantitative and qualitative effects on groundwater resources. These impacts differ for aquifers in solid and unconsolidated rock, in urban or rural locations, and in the principal processes of groundwater recharge. Having knowledge about the intrinsic key parameters (aquifer geometries, storage properties, groundwater renewal rates, residence times, etc.), the principal groundwater recharge processes, and the temperature imprinting makes it possible to compare and forecast the sensitivity of individual aquifers to climate change. The sensitivity of future groundwater temperature development for selected climate projections was qualitatively investigated for representative Swiss unconsolidated rock groundwater resources in the Central Plateau as well as the Jura and Alpine region. For non-urban and rural areas, climate change is expected to have a strong overall impact on groundwater temperatures. In urban areas, however, direct anthropogenic influences are likely to dominate. Increased thermal subsurface use and waste heat from underground structures, as well as adaptation strategies to mitigate global warming, increase groundwater temperatures. Likewise, measurements for the city of Basel show that groundwater temperatures increased by an average of 3.0 ± 0.7 °C in the period from 1993 to 2016, and that they can exceed 18 °C, especially in densely urbanized areas. Similarly, regarding shallow aquifers with low groundwater saturated zone thicknesses, such as in Davos (Canton Grisons), groundwater temperatures will strongly be influenced by changes in groundwater recharge regimes. In contrast, groundwater temperature changes within deep aquifers with large groundwater saturated zone thicknesses, such as in Biel/Bienne (Canton Bern), or in some cases in aquifers with large distances from the land surface to the groundwater table and extended unsaturated zones, such as in Winterthur (Canton Zurich), are strongly attenuated and can only be expected over long time periods. In the context of the presented research we hypothesized that quantitative groundwater recharge and the associated temperature imprinting of aquifers is primarily determined by infiltrating surface waters (i.e. “river-fed aquifers”). We show that seasonal shifts in groundwater recharge processes could be an important factor affecting future groundwater temperatures. Moreover, the interaction with surface waters and increased groundwater recharge during high runoff periods are likely to strongly influence groundwater temperatures. Accordingly, for the “business as usual” climate change scenario and for the end of the century, a shift in precipitation and river flood events from summer to winter months could be accompanied by an increase in groundwater recharge in comparatively cool seasons, which would be accompanied by a tendency to “cool down” groundwater resources.

Tracer testing is a well-established technique in hydrogeological site characterization. However, certain a priori knowledge of the hydraulic regime is required beforehand to avoid test failure, e.g. miss of tracer. In this study, we propose a novel tracer test concept for the hydraulic characterization of shallow unconsolidated sedimentary deposits when only scarce a priori information on the hydraulic regime is available. Therefore, we combine conventional salt tracer testing with direct push vertical high resolution electrical conductivity logging. The proposed tracer test concept was successfully tested on coarse, braided river deposits of the Tagliamento River, Italy. With limited a priori information available two tracer tests were performed in three days to reliably determine ground water flow direction and velocity allowing on-site decision-making to adaptively install observation wells for reliable breakthrough curve measurements. Furthermore, direct push vertical electrical profiling provided essential information about the plume characteristics with outstanding measurement resolution and efficiency.

As a result of the increasing use of shallow geothermal resources, hydraulic, thermal and chemical impacts affecting groundwater quality can be observed with ever increasing frequency (Possemiers et al., 2014). To overcome the uncertainty associated with chemical impacts, a city scale study on the effects of intensive geothermal resource use by groundwater heat pump systems on groundwater quality, with special emphasis on heavy metal contents was performed. Statistical analysis of geochemical data obtained from several field campaigns has allowed studying the spatiotemporal relationship between temperature anomalies in the aquifer and trace element composition of groundwater. The relationship between temperature and the concentrations of trace elements resulted in weak correlations, indicating that temperature changes are not the driving factor in enhancing heavy metal contaminations. Regression models established for these correlations showed a very low reactivity or response of heavy metal contents to temperature changes. The change rates of heavy metal contents with respect to temperature changes obtained indicate a low risk of exceeding quality threshold values by means of the exploitation regimes used, neither producing nor enhancing contamination significantly. However, modification of pH, redox potential, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen and alkalinity correlated with the concentrations of heavy metals. In this case, the change rates of heavy metal contents are higher, with a greater risk of exceeding threshold values.

Shallow geothermal resource exploitation through the use of groundwater heat pump systems not only has hydraulic and thermal effects on the environment but also induces physicochemical changes that can compromise the operability of installations. This study focuses on chemical clogging and dissolution subsidence processes observed during the geothermal re-injection of pumped groundwater into an urban aquifer. To explain these phenomena, two transient reactive transport models of a groundwater heat pump installation in an alluvial aquifer were used to reproduce groundwater-solid matrix interactions occurring in a surrounding aquifer environment during system operation. The models couple groundwater flow, heat and solute transport together with chemical reactions. In these models, the permeability distribution in space changes with precipitation-dissolution reactions over time. The simulations allowed us to estimate the calcite precipitation rates and porosity variations over space and time as a function of existent hydraulic gradients in an aquifer as well as the intensity of CO2 exchanges with the atmosphere. The results obtained from the numerical model show how CO2 exolution processes that occur during groundwater reinjection into an aquifer and calcite precipitation are related to hydraulic efficiency losses in exploitation systems. Finally, the performance of reinjection wells was evaluated over time according to different scenarios until the systems were fully obstructed. Our simulations also show a reduction in hydraulic conductivity that forces re-injected water to flow downwards, thereby enhancing the dissolution of evaporitic bedrock and producing subsidence that can ultimately result in a dramatic collapse of the injection well infrastructure.

Infrastructures that are constructed on unstable geologic formations are prone to subsidence. Data have been collected in the context of an upgrading project for a highway located beside a river dam that was constructed on gypsum-containing formations. Surface water infiltrates upstream of the dam, circulates through the gravel deposits and into the weathered bedrock around and beneath the dam, and exfiltrates downstream into the river. As a result, an extended weathering zone within the bedrock and preferential flow paths within voids and conduits developed as part of a rapidly evolving karst system. These processes enhance karstification in the soluble units of the gypsum-containing formations and resulted in the subsidence of the dam and the highway. Since 2006 changes in the hydrogeologic flow regime have been investigated continuously by different methods that also allow the evaluation of the long-term performance of the infrastructures. Geological (outcrops, lithostratigraphic information of boreholes), hydrometrical (extensive groundwater monitoring, dye tracer tests) and hydrogeophysical (Electrical Resistivity Tomography, ERT) field data of varying quality were integrated into high-resolution 3-D hydrogeological and 2-D karst evolution models. The applied investigative methods are validated and the sensitivity of relevant parameters governing the processes determined. It could be demonstrated that the applied methods for karst aquifer characterization complement each other and allow the interpretation of short-term impacts and long-term development on system-dynamics in the context of hydrogeologic flow regimes of karst areas. This includes the description of the transient character of the hydrogeologic flow regime during and after episodic flood events (surface-groundwater interaction, conduit and diffuse model outflow) as well as the evaluation of time scales for karst evolution. Results allow the optimization of investigative methods for similar subsidence problems, leading from general measurements and monitoring technologies to tools with predictive character.

Faecal contamination of drinking water extracted from alluvial aquifers can lead to severe problems. River water infiltration can be a hazard for extraction wells located nearby, especially during high discharge events. The high dimensionality of river–groundwater interaction and the many factors affecting bacterial survival and transport in groundwater make a simple assessment of actual water quality difficult. The identification of proxy indicators for river water infiltration and bacterial contamination is an important step in managing groundwater resources and hazard assessment. The time resolution of microbial monitoring studies is often too low to establish this relationship. A proxy-based approach in such highly dynamic systems requires in-depth knowledge of the relationship between the variable of interest, e.g. river water infiltration, and its proxy indicator. In this study, continuously recorded physico-chemical parameters (temperature, electrical conductivity, turbidity, spectral absorption coefficient, particle density) were compared to the counts for faecal indicator bacteria, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus sp. obtained from intermittent sampling. Sampling for faecal indicator bacteria was conducted on two temporal scales: (a) routine bi-weekly monitoring over a month and (b) intense (bi-hourly) event-based sampling over 3 days triggered by a high discharge event. Both sampling set-ups showed that the highest bacterial concentrations occurred in the river. E. coli and Enterococcus sp. concentrations decreased with time and length of flow path in the aquifer. The event-based sampling was able to demonstrate differences in bacterial removal between clusters of observation wells linked to aquifer composition. Although no individual proxy indicator for bacterial contamination could be established, it was shown that a combined approach based on time-series of physico-chemical parameters could be used to assess river water infiltration as a hazard for drinking water quality management.

The macroscopic morphology of structures involved in sound generation in the Indian Ocean humpback dolphin (Sousa plumbea) were described for the first time using computed tomography imaging and standard gross dissection techniques. The Indian Ocean humpback dolphin may represent a useful comparative model to the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops sp.) to provide insights into the functional anatomy of the sound production in dolphins, since these coastal dolphins exhibit similar body size and share similarities on acoustic behavior. The general arrangement of sound generating structures, that is, air sacs and muscles, was similar in both the bottlenose dolphin and the Indian Ocean humpback dolphin. The main difference between the two species existed in a small left posterior branch of the melon in the Indian Ocean humpback dolphin, which was not found in the bottlenose dolphin and might reflect an adaptation of directionality for high frequency communication sounds as seen in some other delphinids (e.g., Lagenorhynchus sp., Grampus griseus). Thus, this may be the main reason for the asymmetry of the sound production structures in dolphins. Additionally, the longer rostrum in Indian Ocean humpback dolphins might suggest a more directional echolocation beam compared to the Lahille's bottlenose dolphin. Hydrogeologist are commonly confronted to field data scarcity. An interesting way to compensate this data paucity, is to use analog data. Then the questions of prediction accuracy and uncertainty assessment when using analog data shall be raised. These questions are investigated in the current paper in the case of contaminant transport forecasting in braided river aquifers. In using analog data from the literature, multiple unconditional geological realizations are produced following different geological conceptual models (Multi-Gaussian, Object-based, Pseudo-Genetic). These petrophysical realizations are tested in a contaminant transport problem based on the MADE-II tracer experiment dataset. The simulations show that reasonable contaminant transport predictions can be achieved using analog data. The initial concentration conditions and location regarding the conductivity heterogeneity field have a stronger influence on the plume behavior than the resulting equivalent permeability. The results also underline the necessity to include a wide variety of geological conceptual models and not to restrain parameter space exploration within each concept as long as no field data allows for conceptual model or parameter value falsification.

Increasing anthropogenic impacts lead to elevated temperatures of the shallow subsurface, including the unsaturated and groundwater saturated zone, in many urban areas in comparison to unaffected natural thermal states. The "current thermal state" of four groundwater bodies in the urban area of Basel-City, Switzerland, was investigated by means of high-resolution multilevel temperature wells and numerical 3D groundwater flow and heat transport models. The calibrated and validated numerical groundwater flow and heat transport models allow evaluating and comparing groundwater and heat fluxes for the investigated groundwater bodies and defined cross-sections for differing urban districts, e.g. residential and industrial areas under development. We present the overall and the specific advective heat fluxes within two urban districts, which will be restructured in the near future. The management of groundwater resources in urban areas plays an important role not only for groundwater quantity but also for its quality, i.e. thermal subsurface and groundwater regimes. We demonstrate how monitoring and modelling tools can be the basis for a sustainable management of complex urban groundwater resources. Furthermore, we argue that such tools should be integrated in the thermal management of urban groundwater bodies. Such tools also allow integrating the potentially available energy of shallow subsurface resources into energetic management strategies on the urban scale.

The presented work illustrates to what extent field investigations as well as monitoring and modeling approaches are necessary to understand the high discharge dynamics and vulnerability of Karst springs. In complex settings the application of 3D geological models is essential for evaluating the vulnerability of Karst systems. They allow deriving information on catchment characteristics, as the geometry of aquifers and aquitards as well as their displacements along faults. A series of Karst springs in northwestern Switzerland were compared and Karst system dynamics with respect to qualitative and quantitative issues were evaluated. The main objective of the studies was to combine information of catchment characteristics and data from novel monitoring systems (physicochemical and microbiological parameters) to assess the intrinsic vulnerability of Karst springs to microbiological contamination with simulated spring discharges derived from numerical modeling (linear storage models). The numerically derived relation of fast and slow groundwater flow components enabled us to relate different sources of groundwater recharge and to characterize the dynamics of the Karst springs. Our study illustrates that comparably simple model-setups were able to reproduce the overall dynamic intrinsic vulnerability of several Karst systems and that one of the most important processes involved was the temporal variation of groundwater recharge (precipitation, evapotranspiration and snow melt). Furthermore, we make a first attempt on how to link intrinsic to specific vulnerability of Karst springs, which involves activities within the catchment area as human impacts from agriculture and settlements. Likewise, by a more detailed representation of system dynamics the influence of surface water, which is impacted by release events from storm sewers, infiltrating into the Karst system, could be considered. Overall, we demonstrate that our approach can be the basis for a more flexible and differentiated management and monitoring of raw-water quality of Karst springs.

Drinking water production in the vicinity of rivers not only requires the consideration of different spatiotemporal scales and settings of river-groundwater interaction processes, but also of local and regional scale groundwater regimes. Selected case studies in combination with field-experiments and the setup of high-resolution groundwater flow models enabled the investigation of the spatiotemporal development of microbial (classical fecal indicator bacteria and total cell counts) and selected organic micropollutants in riverine and regional groundwater for different hydrological settings, including low and high flow conditions. Proxy indicators suitable as surrogates for the diverse contaminations in alluvial aquifers with different settings could be identified. Based on the study results, the basic elements for both groundwater management and river restoration concepts are derived, which include the: (1) compilation and evaluation of the "current state" concerning hydrogeology, microbiology and contamination by organic micropollutants, (2) definition of field-experiments to qualitatively assess variability related to the "current state", and (3) quantitative assessment of groundwater regimes, including variability of groundwater components and inflow areas, by application of high-resolution groundwater flow models. The validity and transferability of the concept and inferred controls (specifically drivers and controls of river-groundwater interaction) are tested by evaluations derived from hydraulic relationships to river sections with comparable settings and regional groundwater flow regimes in general. The results of our investigations illustrate the influence of dynamic hydrologic boundary conditions on river-groundwater interaction and of regional scale groundwater flow regimes on the water composition of riverine groundwater systems. It is demonstrated how to identify river sections and their variations with intensified river-groundwater exchange processes and how to quantify the transient character of the different groundwater components that constitute the raw water quality of drinking water wells near rivers.

Uncontrolled subsurface evaporite dissolution could lead to hazards such as land subsidence. Observed subsidences in a study area of Northwestern Switzerland were mainly due to subsurface dissolution (subrosion) of evaporites such as halite and gypsum. A set of 2D density driven flow simulations were evaluated along 1000 m long and 150 m deep 2D cross sections within the study area that is characterized by tectonic horst and graben structures. The simulations were conducted to study the effect of the different subsurface parameters that could affect the dissolution process. The heterogeneity of normal faults and its impact on the dissolution of evaporites is studied by considering several permeable faults that include non-permeable areas. The mixed finite element method (MFE) is used to solve the flow equation, coupled with the multipoint flux approximation (MPFA) and the discontinuous Galerkin method (DG) to solve the diffusion and the advection parts of the transport equation. Results show that the number of faults above the lower aquifer that contains the salt layer is considered as the most important factor that affects the dissolution compared to the other investigated parameters of thickness of the zone above the halite formation, a dynamic conductivity of the lower aquifer, and varying boundary conditions in the upper aquifer.

We have studied the dynamics of water quality in three karst springs taking advantage of new technological developments that enable high-resolution measurements of bacterial load (total cell concentration: TCC) as well as online measurements of abiotic parameters. We developed a novel data analysis approach, using self-organizing maps and non-linear projection methods, to approximate the TCC dynamics using the multivariate data sets of abiotic parameter time-series, thus providing a method that could be implemented in an online water quality management system for water suppliers. The (TCC) data, obtained over several months, provided a good basis to study the microbiological dynamics in detail. Alongside the TCC measurements, online abiotic parameter time-series, including spring discharge, turbidity, spectral absorption coefficient at 254nm (SAC254) and electrical conductivity, were obtained. High-density sampling over an extended period of time, i.e. every 45min for 3months, allowed a detailed analysis of the dynamics in karst spring water quality. Substantial increases in both the TCC and the abiotic parameters followed precipitation events in the catchment area. Differences between the parameter fluctuations were only apparent when analyzed at a high temporal scale. Spring discharge was always the first to react to precipitation events in the catchment area. Lag times between the onset of precipitation and a change in discharge varied between 0.2 and 6.7h, depending on the spring and event. TCC mostly reacted second or approximately concurrent with turbidity and SAC254, whereby the fastest observed reaction in the TCC time series occurred after 2.3h. The methodological approach described here enables a better understanding of bacterial dynamics in karst springs, which can be used to estimate risks and management options to avoid contamination of the drinking water.

Shallow subsurface thermal regimes in urban areas are increasingly impacted by anthropogenic activities, which include infrastructure development like underground traffic lines as well as industrial and residential subsurface buildings. In combination with the progressive use of shallow geothermal energy systems, this results in the so-called subsurface urban heat island effect. This article emphasizes the importance of considering the thermal impact of subsurface structures, which commonly is underestimated due to missing information and of reliable subsurface temperature data. Based on synthetic heat-transport models different settings of the urban environment were investigated, including: (1) hydraulic gradients and conductivities, which result in different groundwater flow velocities; (2) aquifer properties like groundwater thickness to aquitard and depth to water table; and (3) constructional features, such as building depths and thermal properties of building structures. Our results demonstrate that with rising groundwater flow velocities, the heat-load from building structures increase, whereas down-gradient groundwater temperatures decrease. Thermal impacts on subsurface resources therefore have to be related to the permeability of aquifers and hydraulic boundary conditions. In regard to the urban settings of Basel, Switzerland, flow velocities of around 1 m d− 1 delineate a marker where either down-gradient temperature deviations or heat-loads into the subsurface are more relevant. Furthermore, no direct thermal influence on groundwater resources should be expected for aquifers with groundwater thicknesses larger 10 m and when the distance of the building structure to the groundwater table is higher than around 10 m. We demonstrate that measuring temperature changes down-gradient of subsurface structures is insufficient overall to assess thermal impacts, particularly in urban areas. Many groundwater systems consist of multi-scale aquifer units. The exchange processes and rates between these aquifer units are complex. In order to manage such complex systems, a subdivision into different catchments, sub-catchments or groundwater bodies as manageable units is required. The sustainable management of water resources requires a comprehensive view of water-quality and water-quantity aspects not only for water supply issues, but generally also for flood protection and riverine ecosystem functions. Such transformations require an improved understanding of recharge and exchange processes between different aquifer units as well as aquifer-surface water interaction-processes at different spatiotemporal scales. The main objective of this study is to illustrate concepts by defining the geometry and scales of different aquifer units within a sedimentary basin. The Laufen Basin in the Jura Mountains represents a sub-catchment of the River Birs (Switzerland). Its structure is characterized by a pronounced local relief and a series of aquifer units which are typical for many complex groundwater systems in front of mountain chains such as the alpine foreland and the Jura Mountains of Central Europe. A combination of different concepts is required to understand multi-scale flow systems and to describe the various hydrogeological processes. Three concepts are proposed for the Laufen Basin, including: (1) a regional flow-system analysis, based on the concept of hierarchical groundwater flow systems; (2) the river-corridor concept for understanding aquifer-surface water interaction processes; and (3) the calculation of the dynamic vulnerability index and the aquifer base gradient approach for karst flow and fractured flow systems.

River management and restoration measures are of increasing importance for integrated water resources management (IWRM) as well as for ecosystem services. However, often river management mainly considers engineering and construction aspects only and the hydrogeological settings as the properties and functions of ancient fluvial systems are neglected which often do not lead to the desired outcome. Knowledge of the distribution of sediment units could contribute to a more efficient restoration. In this study, we present two noninvasive approaches for delineation of fluvial sediment architecture that can form a basis for the restoration, particularly in areas where site disturbance is not permitted. We investigate the floodplain of a heavily modified low-mountain river in Switzerland using different hydrogeophysical methods. In the first approach, we use data from electromagnetic induction (EMI) with four different integral depths (0.75–6 m) and gamma-spectrometry as well as the elevation data as input for a K-means cluster algorithm. The generated cluster map of the surface combines the main characteristics from multilayered input data and delineates areas of varying soil properties. The resulting map provides an indication of areas with different sedimentary units. In the second approach, we develop a new iterative method for the generation of a geological structure model (GSM) by means of various EMI forward models. We vary the geological input parameters based on the measured data until the predicted EMI maps match the measured EMI values. Subsequently, we use the best matched input data for the GSM generation. The derived GSM provides a 3D delineation of possible ancient stream courses. A comparison with an independent ground penetrating radar (GPR) profile confirmed the delineations on the cluster map as well as the vertical changes of the GSM qualitatively. Thus, each of the approaches had the capacity for detecting sedimentary units with distinct hydraulic properties as an indication of former stream courses. The developed methodology presents a promising tool for the characterization of test sites with no additional subsurface information.

Solar combi-storages are used in many countries for storing solar heat for space heating and domestic hot water (DHW) in one device. When a combi-storage is used in combination with a heat pump, the temperature stratification efficiency of the storage is a decisive factor for the overall efficiency and thus, for the consumed end-energy of the system. In particular, fluid that is entering the storage with a high velocity may cause considerable mixing, thus, destroying stratification and leading to poor system performance. This work presents computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of direct horizontal inlets at midheight of a typical solar combi-storage of about 800 L volume. Different inlet diffusor designs were simulated, and laboratory measurements were used to validate CFD experiments. For the given tank geometry, mass flow rates, and inlet position, it is found for a fluid inlet temperature of 30 °C that fluid velocities should be below 0.1 m/s and Reynolds numbers below 3000–5000 at the outlet of the diffusor in order to avoid the disturbance of a hotter 50 °C zone above the inlet. Furthermore, the fluid path within the diffusor must exceed a minimum length that corresponds to three to four times the hydraulic diameter of the diffusor.

The impact, caused by a construction of a dam site on the Birs river close to Basel (Switzerland), on the evolution of a gypsum-karst aquifer in the vicinity of the hydraulic building, is studied. Several sinkholes provoked subsidence of the dam and the highway nearby. Extensive technical measures had to be conducted in order to prevent further karstification. The numerous geophysical and geological field studies executed in the area, together with a 3D hydrogeological model of the aquifer, provide a very detailed information about the boundary conditions, and the local properties determining the karstification. In this work, we present a 2D karst evolution model of the aquifer in the vicinity of the dam structure. In contrast to older studies, this time the focus of the research is not the basic processes governing the karst evolution, but modeling the temporal development of the real aquifer. Using the large amount of information about the location, we demonstrate that a detailed knowledge of the local properties of the rock (hydraulic conductivity, solubility) is of crucial importance when modeling real aquifers. From a wide range of possible evolution scenarios, we deduce a warning that solutional features, such as sinkholes, can develop far away from the hydraulic structure and endanger facilities at the surface. Our model is able to reproduce and successfully explain the main geological features revealed by field studies. We suggest a workflow to combine the data from field observations, groundwater modeling, and karst evolution modeling and to study the karstification of real aquifers. We propose a scenario for the evolution of the aquifer and a reasonable range for the values of the basic parameters governing the karstification.

We present a three-dimensional model describing the evolution of a gypsum karst aquifer along the Birs river near Basel in Switzerland. Here, a small dam-site was built in 1890 to generate hydro-electric power. After subsidence of a nearby highway, geophysical and geological field studies have been carried out and a detailed hydrogeological model has been developed. These observations identified a karstified weathered zone as the reason for the subsidence. To prevent any further damage, remedial construction measures have been carried out. We employ our numerical model KARSTAQUIFER, which simulates the temporal evolution of a karst system by dissolution, increasing the porosity in the aquifer. We used results from geological and geophysical investigations as a priori information for implementing the initial boundary conditions into our three-dimensional numerical model. Our model accounts for topography, precipitation and geology and especially for the anisotropy of the local bedrock. It can successfully reproduce the weathered zone in its current horizontal and vertical extent. We cm also simulate the possible evolution of the aquifer following a remedial construction phase. Therefore, taken together with the geophysical and geological observations and the groundwater model, our three-dimensional karst aquifer evolution model enhances the understanding of the development of this heterogeneous karst aquifer system. Glacial lake Kuray–Chuja which occupied the Kuray and Chuja Basins during the Quaternary Period (Marine Isotope Stages 2 and 3) left distinct shoreline features around the basin margins. At the greatest extent the lake had a surface area of 2951 km2 with wind fetches up to 70 km. Wind waves constructed erosional, erosional-accumulative and accumulative strandlines, the latter including spits, tombolos, barrier beaches and offshore bars. Strandlines range in altitude between c. 1600 and 2100 m, the range in altitudes demonstrating lake level variations through time. The shoreline forms and stratigraphy are detailed. Particular attention is given to the presence of pocket beaches on rock-coasts, the alluvial strandlines of which have distinctive alongshore gradients. Although reasonably ascribed to regional differential tectonic uplift, the possibility that the local alongshore gradients are augmented as a process response to alongshore drift of sediment in a sediment-starved system of closed coastal cells is explored using a simple numerical model.

Rapid changes in spring water quality in karst areas due to rapid recharge of bacterially contaminated water are a major concern for drinking water suppliers and users. The main objective of this study was to use field experiments with fecal indicators to verify the vulnerability of a karst spring to pathogens, as determined by using a numerical modeling approach. The groundwater modeling was based on linear storage models that can be used to simulate karst water flow. The vulnerability of the karst groundwater is estimated using such models to calculate criteria that influence the likelihood of spring water being affected by microbial contamination. Specifically, the temporal variation in the vulnerability, depending on rainfall events and overall recharge conditions, can be assessed and quantified using the dynamic vulnerability index (DVI). DVI corresponds to the ratio of conduit to diffuse flow contributions to spring discharge. To evaluate model performance with respect to predicted vulnerability, samples from a spring were analyzed for Escherichia coli, enterococci, Clostridium perfringens, and heterotrophic plate count bacteria during and after several rainfall events. DVI was shown to be an indication of the risk of fecal contamination of spring water with sufficient accuracy to be used in drinking water management. We conclude that numerical models are a useful tool for evaluating the vulnerability of karst systems to pathogens under varying recharge conditions.

Theories that describe karst systems are often limited to conceptual models. However, engineering projects within complex karst systems demand the development of tools that allow site-specific descriptions of the hydrogeologic settings and calibrating the processes of karst evolution. Subsidence of a river dam and an adjacent highway, both constructed on gypsum-containing rock, southeast of Basel, Switzerland, required remedial construction measures. A monitoring network was set up, to safeguard surface and subsurface water resources during the construction measures. The primary project goal was to develop tools that enable a continuous characterization of the groundwater flow regime and that facilitate the evaluation of the long-term performance of the infrastructures. Investigative methods included high-resolution 3D hydrogeological modeling, and the integration of geological, hydrometrical and hydrogeophysical field data of varying quality. Particular focus was placed on the hydraulic behavior of the complex conduit system. Results help to understand the evolution of distinct karst features and zones of preferential flow. The location of fracture zones and parts of the old meandering river course, playing a major role in the karst evolution process, could be identified. Together with the hydrometrical investigations and hydrogeological modeling, the evolution of the karst system and its dynamics can be interpreted in relation to the groundwater flow regime.

To understand how groundwater resources may be affected by climate change and create sustainable management plans, modeling karst systems provides much insight.

We use the gradient of the aquifer base to investigate the hydrology of mature, shallow karst systems. We first present a 3D geological model of the Gempen plateau (NW Switzerland) that reveals the geometry of aquifers and aquitards and their displacement at faults, then transfer the 3D geological model to a hydrological model. The transformation is based on a conceptual karst model approximating subsurface flow in mature, shallow karst systems to open surface flow on the top of the uppermost aquitard or aquifer base. The gradient of this surface is expected to mainly influence regional groundwater flow patterns. We use the hydrological model to delineate spring catchment areas. The discharge areas and corresponding catchment areas of the model are compared with the occurrence of springs in the study area and with hydraulic links confirmed by tracer tests. We also describe the way in which the hydrological model contributes to identifying flow processes. The proposed aquifer base gradient approach enhances vulnerability assessment in mature, shallow karst regions by (1) localizing catchment areas as a precondition of source protection strategies and (2) indicating dominant flow processes associated with individual springs.

A 3D geological model of the area east of Basel on the southeastern border of the Upper Rhine Graben, consisting of 47 faults and six stratigraphic horizons relevant for groundwater flow, was developed using borehole data, geological maps, geological cross sections, and outcrop data. This model provides new insight into the discussions about the kinematics of the area between the southeastern border of the Upper Rhine Graben and the Tabular Jura east of Basel. A 3D analysis showed that both thin-skinned and thick-skinned tectonic elements occur in the modeled area and that the Anticline and a series of narrow graben structures developed simultaneously during an extensional stress-field varying from E–W to SSE–NNW, which lasted from the Middle Eocene to Late Oligocene. In a new approach the faults and horizons of the 3D geological model were transferred into discrete elements with distributed hydrogeological properties in order to simulate the 3D groundwater flow regime within the modeled aquifers. A three-layer approach with a horizontal regularly spaced grid combined with an irregular property distribution of transmissivity in depth permitted the piezometric head of the steady-state model to be automatically calibrated to corresponding measurements using more than 200 piezometers. Groundwater modeling results demonstrated that large-scale industrial pumping affected the groundwater flow field in the Upper Muschelkalk aquifer at distances of up to 2 km to the south. The results of this research will act as the basis for further model developments, including salt dissolution and solute transport in the area, and may ultimately help to provide predictions for widespread land subsidence risks.

This paper describes two groundwater models simulating a well capture zone in a heterogeneous aquifer located near an infiltrating river. A deterministic, large-scaled groundwater model (1.8 × 1.2 km) is used to simulate the average behavior of groundwater flow and advective transport. It is also used to assign the boundary conditions for a small-scaled groundwater model (550 × 400 m) which relies on stochastically generated aquifer properties based on site-specific drill core and georadar data. The small-scaled groundwater model is used to include the large subsurface heterogeneity at the location of interest. The stochastic approach in the small-scaled groundwater model does not lead to a clearly defined well capture zone, but to a plane representation of the probability of a certain surface location belonging to the well capture zone. The models were applied to a study site, which is located in an area of artificial groundwater recharge and production, in Lange Erlen near Basel, Northwestern Switzerland. The groundwater at this site contributes to the city’s drinking water supply, and the site serves as a recreational area to the population of Basel. The river is channelized, but there are initiatives to restore the riverbank to more natural conditions. However, they conflict with the requirements of groundwater protection, especially during flood events. Therefore, a river section of 600 m in the vicinity of an unused and disconnected drinking water well was restored to study changes in the groundwater flow regime depending on hydrologic variations, water supply operation data, progress of river restoration, and subsurface heterogeneity. The results of the groundwater models are compared with data from two tracer experiments using Uranine and the natural Radon isotope Rn-222, and with physical, chemical, and microbiological data sampled in monitoring wells between the river and the drinking water well. The groundwater models document significant variations regarding the dimension of the well capture zone depending on changing boundary conditions and the variability of the hydraulic aquifer properties. The knowledge of the subsurface heterogeneity is important to evaluate transport times and distances of microorganisms from the infiltrating river or the riverbank to the drinking water well. The data from the monitoring wells show that chemical and microbiological processes predominantly occur in the hyporheic interstitial zone and the riverbank within a range of a few meters up to a few 10s of meters from the river. The methods presented here can be used to define and evaluate groundwater protection zones in heterogeneous aquifers associated with infiltration from rivers under changing boundary conditions, and under the uncertainty of subsurface heterogeneity. Furthermore, they allow one to study the site-specific operational alternatives associated with river restoration.

Water based combi-storages are frequently used in Central Europe for storing heat for space heating and domestic hot water in one device. The stratification efficiency of direct combi-storage inlets has a decisive influence on the energetic efficiency of solar thermal systems and even more of heat pumps that are connected to combi-storages. However, there are currently no simple recommendations for the geometrical design of direct storage inlets together with scientifically supported values for maximum mass flow rates that can be used for charging without disturbing stratification in the storage. In this work, the effect of different geometrical designs and mass flow rates on stratification of the storage was studied for direct storage inlets with computational fluid dynamics. Pollution in the shallow subsurface has led to an increasing need of understanding how to quantitatively characterize both the heterogeneity of gravel aquifers and the influence of heterogeneity on groundwater flow and solute transport. Models play an important role in decision-making processes, especially in the context of better characterizing and in forecasting the behavior of a given geological system. The objective of the present paper is the derivation of a gradual lithofacies-based interpretation of outcrop, drill core, and ground penetrating radar (GPR or georadar) data of different quality. The presented method allows a probability estimation of drill core layer descriptions and radarfacies types representing defined sedimentary structure types. The method includes a determination of ‘initial structure type probabilities’ for grain-size categories and combinations thereof described in drill core layer descriptions as well as a subsequent differentiation of these structure type probabilities in an iterative process considering ‘additional information’ like main constituent, quantity, fraction, and sorting of single grain-size categories, color, chemical precipitation, layer thickness, and adjacent layer. The radarfacies types are calibrated with drill cores located in the vicinity of georadar sections. The calibration process consists of the assignment of the calculated structure type probabilities from the drill core layer descriptions to the corresponding radarfacies types considering the proportion in thickness between drill core layers and georadar structures. The structure type probabilities can be given for points along boreholes and a grid with arbitrary mesh size along georadar sections. The method is applied to field examples from the Rhine/Wiese aquifer near Basel in Switzerland. The resulting structure type probabilities can be used for conditioning stochastic simulations of geological models. However, the conditioned stochastic simulation of the Rhine/Wiese aquifer is the topic of another paper. The results show the importance of a detailed sedimentological analysis of outcrops and drill cores as well as its significance on the distinction of sedimentary structure types.

Groundwater circulation in evaporite bearing horizons and the resulting evolution of karst frequently causes geotechnical problems such as land subsidence or collapses. Even comparably small subsidence rates can significantly affect sensitive urban infrastructure. Dissolution of deep-seated evaporites occurs when groundwater, undersaturated with respect to highly soluble minerals, enters into contact with an evaporite body. Groundwater can interact from all directions in space. Laboratory dissolution experiments were carried out to study the effect of freshwater in contact with rock salt, accounting for the effect of dipping interfaces as an abstraction of inclined geological formations. The dissolution experiments were carried out both in 2D and 3D. The approach allows studying dissolution in a normal fault juxtaposing a developing intrastratal salt karst against a salt layer or against a poorly soluble layer. Modeling experiments were conducted to study the effect of variable density flow in inclined aquifers bordering halite formations and the effect of different fault geometries. The numerical simulations of density driven flow were evaluated along 1,000 m long and 150 m deep 2D cross sections to study the effect of tectonic horst and graben structures. Results show that a large fault zone consisting of a set of smaller hydraulically higher conductive faults is a major factor for dissolution.

This article presents a numerical model of a part of an aquifer that is recharged by infiltration from the Swiss pre-Alpine river Toss in the Linsental (north-eastern Switzerland). The nearby city of Winterthur makes use of this aquifer as a resource of drinking water. The presented model is part of a larger interdisciplinary research program undertaken with the goal to evaluate the possible impacts of a planned revitalization of the severely canalized river Toss. Above all it should show the extent of decrease of the groundwater residence time if the river bed is allowed to move towards the drinking water wells. The flow model was constrained and calibrated by transport modelling of tritiogenic 3 He. This tracer reflects both the aging of the water (by accumulation of 3 He resulting from tritium-decay) as well as the two different components of the mixture (river water free of tritiogenic 3 He due to degassing, and groundwater enriched in 3 He due to accumulation). By simulating a Dirac- pulse-shaped input of a conservative tracer at different sources (river cells or upstream flux boundary cells) it is possible to determine the age distributions as well as the mixing ratios of the two types of water at the two pumping stations within the model area. The same calculations for a hypothetical river course passing directly beside the pumping stations indicate a decrease of the mean residence time of the pumped water together with an increase of the amount of the younger river water component. q 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. The investigation of contaminated sites is usually a long and expensive process. It is therefore desirable to use a combination of methodologies in an integrative approach that can reduce redundant information gathering. The objective of this study was to examine the usefulness of 2 non-intrusive exploration techniques in a contaminated site investigation. Borehole positioning based on geophysical measurements was compared to positioning based on the Bayesian expert system for flow-field modeling. The goal set at the field site was the assessment of the type and load of contaminants transported from the landfill site to the adjacent aquifer and the extent of leachate plumes within the groundwater. The two methods made different demands on information gathering and were found to be complementary. The geophysical approach focused attention on the waste compartments at the site and on mixing plumes in the adjacent aquifer but could not, without prior information, provided information on the flow field. The Bayesian approach to flow-field modeling determined areas of greatest model uncertainty at the model boundaries. The model highlighted areas of greatest uncertainty that might otherwise have been overlooked and provided information on the most likely mean direction of the leachate plumes. It was concluded that both methods contribute to a site investigation and should be used before additional drilling is carried out.

Progress towards a better understanding of groundwater circulation and transport processes in aquifers demands a multidisciplinary approach to a host of unresolved problems. Although much progress has been made within recent years in interpreting the dynamic character of groundwater systems, many key issues remain to be addressed. In particular, several areas demand attention: the role of sedimentological information (heterogeneity) in groundwater and transport models, the scaling-up of observations from outcrop scale to larger scales and the integration of geological and geophysical information of different quality into the description of an aquifer structure. Still nowadays many of the heterogeneities cannot be recognized directly because of the limitation of measurement techniques. This is probably one of the reasons for the limited application of aquifer-sedimentology and geophysics in practical cases. In order to consolidate, expand, and make a larger number of people aware of the contribution of modern aquifer-sedimentology, including modelling and ultra-high resolution geophysical methods, several lines of intervention were identified: (1) a better collaboration of the different disciplines on site-specific applied problems; (2) development of new modelling techniques combining data of different quality; (3) development of optimizing tools (position and number of wells, additional geophysical methods, baysian techniques); (4) development of a `common language' among sedimentologists and hydrogeologists to overcome communication problems.

The threat of pollution in the shallow subsurface has led to an increasing need to understand how complex heterogeneities in gravel aquifers influence groundwater transport. To characterize these heterogeneities, we have conducted extensive two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) ground-penetrating radar (GPR or georadar) surveys in two quarries within the Rhine valley of northeastern Switzerland. The quarries comprised gravel and sand deposited in a proglacial braided river system that followed the maximum Wurm-stage glaciation. After the surveys, the terrace walls beneath the two study sites were photographed as they were being excavated. By combining information extracted from the 2- and 3-D georadar images with the outcrop photographs, it was possible to correlate georadar facies with the various glaciofluvial architectural elements. The dominant elements were scour pools formed at or near the confluences of two stream channels and horizontally bedded and massive gravel sheets deposited during moderate to high water flow conditions and exposed during low flow conditions. Architectural elements were generally elongated parallel to the mean flow directions of the ancient river system. Variations in the strike of their long axes reflected lateral and vertical changes in the local flow direction. Time slices showed structural trends not evident on 2-D georadar images and photographs. Data interpretation was quicker, more complete and less ambiguous when georadar facies analyses were based on a combination of georadar vertical profiles and time slices than when based on georadar vertical profiles alone.

Summary 1. The ecology of riparian zones is enormously influenced by the heterogeneous sedimentary structures and associated complex hydrologic flow paths that mediate surface- and groundwater exchanges. Sedimentary structures form a three-dimensional, dynamic framework that controls subsurface flow and the vertical and horizontal exchange of water between channels and floodplains in gravel bed rivers. The modern structure of the bed sediments reflects the legacy of cut and fill alluviation for a particular river basin. 2. Highly permeable sedimentary textures, particularly open framework gravels, allow rapid exchange between surface and groundwaters. 3. Ground penetrating radar provides high resolution information on the nature and three-dimensional distribution of the sediments within the shallow subsurface (4–25 m) of gravel bed rivers. Bed sediments can be mapped at the decimeter scale. 4. Exchange and mixing of ground and channel water occurs along losing, gaining and flow-through reaches as determined by the hydraulic gradient and transmissivity of the bed sediments. 5. Spatial and temporal patterns of surface- and groundwater interactions can be quantified by mass flux measurements and by assessing geochemical contrasts. Natural tracers, such as temperature or radon, are well suited for mapping exchange sites and quantifying interactions. Artificial signals produced by injecting anions, like chloride, bromide and organic dyes are also useful. 6. The study of riparian ecosystems requires an understanding of the geomorphic structures and processes that build and maintain bed sediments and flow pathways through them.

In this study a three-dimensional stochastic facies-based aquifer model was developed. The model can be used to numerically simulate flow and solute transport in heterogeneous groundwater aquifers. The stochastic generation process can be conditioned by using available facies information in one vertical plane or two orthogonal vertical ones. In this study the information was obtained from a facies interpretation of a vertical georadar profile in a natural gravel formation in Switzerland. In the domain outside the known profile, unconditioned lenses and layers were generated at random according to statistical information on coherent sedimentary structures based on observations in adjacent gravel pits [Jussel et al., 1994a]. The method was applied to a single extraction well designed to capture an initially block-shaped contaminant plume. A total of 80 conditioned and unconditioned synthetic aquifers was generated. The flow and transport simulations were performed using a finite element flow model and a random walk transport model. The results are presented as the ensemble of integral solute mass recovery curves of single realizations. One would expect conditioning to reduce the bandwidth of the recovery curves representing the uncertainty, but the results show that the bandwidth even increased. This effect was attributed to a discrepancy in the mean volumetric fraction of the different facies types in the conditioned and the unconditioned cases. Moreover, a simulation using a homogeneous model with constant equivalent flow and transport parameters overestimated the remediation efficiency. The influence of a linear, reversible equilibrium sorption on the remediation well efficiency was taken into account by an uncorrelated random field of the retardation factor based on values from the literature. However, the impact of the variability in hydraulic conductivity clearly exceeded the effect of the variability in the retardation factor.

More than 30% of Europe's land surface is made up of karst exposures. In some countries, water from karst aquifers constitutes almost half of the drinking water supply. Hydrological simulation models can predict the large-scale impact of future environmental change on hydrological variables. However, the information needed to obtain model parameters is not available everywhere and regionalisation methods have to be applied. The responsive behaviour of hydrological systems can be quantified by individual metrics, so-called system signatures. This study explores their value for distinguishing the dominant processes and properties of five different karst systems in Europe and the Middle East. By defining ten system signatures derived from hydrodynamic and hydrochemical observations, a process-based karst model is applied to the five karst systems. In a stepwise model evaluation strategy, optimum parameters and their sensitivity are identified using automatic calibration and global variance-based sensitivity analysis. System signatures and sensitive parameters serve as proxies for dominant processes, and optimised parameters are used to determine system properties. By sensitivity analysis, the set of system signatures was able to distinguish the karst systems from one another by providing separate information about dominant soil, epikarst, and fast and slow groundwater flow processes. Comparing sensitive parameters to the system signatures revealed that annual discharge can serve as a proxy for the recharge area, that the slopes of the high flow parts of the flow duration curves correlate with the fast flow storage constant, and that the dampening of the isotopic signal of the rain as well as the medium flow parts of the flow duration curves have a non-linear relation to the distribution of groundwater storage constants that represent the variability of groundwater flow dynamics. Our approach enabled us to identify dominant processes of the different systems and provided directions for future large-scale simulation of karst areas to predict the impact of future change on karst water resources.

This study presents the development of tools for the sustainable thermal management of a shallow unconsolidated urban groundwater body in the city of Basel (Switzerland). The concept of the investigations is based on (1) a characterization of the present thermal state of the urban groundwater body, and (2) the evaluation of potential mitigation measures for the future thermal management of specific regions within the groundwater body. The investigations focus on thermal processes downgradient of thermal groundwater use, effects of heated buildings in the subsurface as well as the thermal influence of river-groundwater interaction. Investigation methods include (1) short-and long-term data analysis, (2) high-resolution multilevel groundwater temperature monitoring, as well as (3) 3-D numerical groundwater flow and heat transport modeling and scenario development. The combination of these methods allows for the quantifying of the thermal influences on the investigated urban groundwater body, including the influences of thermal groundwater use and heated subsurface constructions. Subsequently, first implications for management strategies are discussed, including minimizing further groundwater temperature increase, targeting "potential natural" groundwater temperatures for specific aquifer regions and exploiting the thermal potential. This article presents hydrogeophysical investigations performed in a well-developed, long-term hydrogeological gypsum karst research site where subsurface evaporite dissolution has led to the subsidence of a river dam and an adjacent highway; both constructed on gypsum-containing rock, southeast of Basel, Switzerland. An observation system was set up to improve the protection of surface and subsurface water resources during remedial construction measures of the highway and in order to understand the processes, as well as the temporal evolution, of rock water interaction (flow and dissolution).However, no detailed hydrogeological information beneath the river could be derived from the previous investigations. To supplement the basic knowledge on this area, underwater Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) measurements were conducted in the river bed upstream of the dam. The ERT-data are interpreted together with drill-core information and a conceptual 3D-Model of the area behind the dam and beneath the river. Results help to delineate weathered zones, associated faults and the thickness of sediment deposits behind the dam, as well as to locate voids within the local karst system. The combination of the ERT and modeling allows the optimization of future site-specific remedial construction measures.

Summary Describing the complex structures that exist in many sedimentary aquifers is crucial for reliable groundwater flow and transport simulation. However, hardly any aquifer can be inspected in such detail that all decimeter to meter heterogeneity is resolved. Aquifer analogs serve as surrogates to construct models of equivalent heterogeneity, and thus imitate those features relevant for flow or transport processes. Gravel pits found in excavation show excellent sections of the sedimentary sequence and thus offer direct insight into the structural and textural composition of the subsoil. This paper describes an approach to also inspect the third dimension: by mapping during the ongoing excavation it is possible to obtain a three-dimensional representation of the subsurface within a short period of time. A detailed description of a case study is presented and the findings from sedimentological, hydrogeological and geophysical analyses are compared. The gravel pit is located near the town of Herten in southwest Germany, where relatively young unconsolidated fluvio-glacial and fluvial sediments in the Rhine basin are mined. The excavated gravel body is built up by architectural elements typical for braided river deposits. The study generated a high-resolution data set of lithofacies, hydrofacies and ground penetrating radar (GPR) profiles. It represents the basis for a full three-dimensional geostatistical reconstruction presented in the second part ( Comunian et al., 2011 ).
