The Spiti Shale Formation is a widely distributed stratigraphic unit of the passive northern margin of the Indian craton, deposited between the Callovian and earliest Cretaceous. The siliciclastic strata are dominated by dark-grey to black argillaceous silt. As the formation has undergone intense tectonic stress involving folding and faulting, it is very difficult to document a complete section. In the type area, the Spiti Valley, six sections have been measured that document parts of the three informal members of the formation, the Lower, Middle, and Upper members. Despite its uniform appearance, eight facies/biofacies types could be distinguished, ranging from the anoxic shale facies, with ammonites and belemnites as the only faunal elements, to the dysoxic Malayomaorica and Bositra biofacies, and the oxic to anoxic offshore shelf facies, which are characterized by low-diversity macrobenthos associations. Other facies are the condensed glauconitic-phosphoritic mudrock facies and the Fe-oolitic siltstone facies (both characterized by sediment starvation), the aerated argillaceous silt–sandstone facies, and the tide-influenced nearshore shelf facies. The benthic macrofauna represents four bivalve-dominated associations all characterized by a very low to low species diversity. They are the Bositra buchii, the Australobuchia spitiensis, the Palaeonucula cuneiformis‒Pruvostiella hermanni‒Indogrammatodon egertonianus, and the Malayomaorica sp.‒Australobuchia spitiensis‒Retroceramus haasti association. Sediments and macrobenthic associations indicate that the Spiti Shale Formation represents outer to inner shelf environments, which for much of the time were subjected to upwelling and anoxic to dysoxic conditions. Distinct shallowing at the top characterizes the transition to the overlying Lower Cretaceous Giumal Formation.

Mukdadiya Formation represents one of the formations that cover a huge area of Iraq. It contains several clastic deposits, such as sandstone, siltstone, and a noticeable amount of gravels. The gravels are considered as the hallmark to differentiate between Injana and Mukdadiya formations. Therefore, the current study focused on these facies to determine the petrography, paleontology , and origin of Mukdadiya deposits. The results of SEM-EDX and XRD analyses showed two types of gravels, namely the siliceous and lime gravels. The highest percentage of gravels belonged to the sedimentary origin (limestone). The elements of Si, Ca, and Fe represented the common elements that formed the studied gravels. The paleontological study displayed numerous fossils that are composed of these gravels, belonging to several groups, including foraminifera, radiolaria, dinoflagellata, echinoida, gastropoda, and calcisphera. Also, four microfacies were identified in the studied gravels. After comparison of all collected data with selected formations, the results confirmed that the origin of the derived gravels is from the Qulqula Formation, because of their content of radiolaria and the other characterizing fossils.

The Cretaceous sediments in southwestern Nigeria are host to one of the largest bitumen deposits in the world. In the current paper, an integrated study on sedimentology, palynology, and applied petroleum geochemistry of the Maastrichtian-Paleocene Araromi Formation was used to determine the depositional environments and hydrocarbon potentials of the formation on the eastern Dahomey Basin. Four sedimentary lithofacies were identified from core samples, namely, lower limestone (F1); medium to coarse-grained sandstone (F2); lower loosely consolidated sandstone (F3); and shale and siltstone (F4). Sedimentation in the eastern Dahomey Basin occurred mainly in fluvial and shallow-marine (shelf) environments. The palynological assemblages of the Araromi Formation reflect deposition in coastal through brackish water to shallow shelf environment with periods of localized wind-induced storms. The shale and siltstone samples of the Araromi Formation are characterized by total organic carbon (TOC) values of up to 2.50 wt % and S2 (hydrocarbon-generating potential) values ranging from 0.26 to 0.70 mgHC/g rock, indicating poor source rocks. Shales show poor quality and thermally immature organic matter at shallow depth and could neither have generated liquid hydrocarbon nor contributed to the heavy oil occurrence on the bitumen and tar-sand belt of eastern Dahomey (Benin) Basin.

Six lithofacies were identified in the Lokoja Formation, Southern Bida Basin: fanglomerate/ conglomerate lithofacies (Gmc), fine to coarse-grained ferruginized weakly cross-bedded, pebbly sandstone lithofacies (Scx), fine to coarsegrained sandstone lithofacies (Sfc), silty claystone lithofacies (Csm), siltstone lithofacies (Slt) and lateritic ironstone lithofacies (Ilt). These were grouped into three lithofacies associations viz: alluvial fan, braided river channel, floodplain lithofacies association. Nine lithofacies were identified in the Ahoko Formation. These are: black-dark grey carbonaceous shale lithofacies (Shc), bioturbated ripple-laminated siltstone lithofacies (Sbr), poorly cross-laminated claystone lithofacies (Cxl), concretionary/nodular ironstone lithofacies (Icn), medium to coarse-grained sandstone lithofacies (Smc) fine grained, well-sorted, friable bioturbated herringbone cross-bedded sandstone lithofacies (Sxf), massive brownish claystone lithofacies (Clm), massive claystone with lateritic ironstone lithofacies (Cli) and lateritic ironstones lithofacies (Ilt). These have been grouped into three lithofacies associations viz: shallow marine lithofaciesassociation, tidal-intertidal flat lithofacies association and floodplain lithofacies association. Similarly, three lithofacies were identified in the Agbaja Formation and have been grouped into two lithofacies association. These are: fine to medium-grained sandstone ironstone interbedded lithofacies (Sti), oolitic–pisolitic ironstone lithofacies (Iop) and concretionary ironstone lithofacies (Icr). The lithofacies associations are: tidal-intertidal flat lithofacies association and shallow marine lithofacies association. Result of lithofacies analysis helped in interpreting the depositional environments. The Lokoja Formation is a product of a fluvial dominated alluvial system from debris/gravity flow in alluvial fan. This developed further into braided river channels and later meandering river during the closing stages. Sediments of the Ahoko Formation were deposited in tidal/intertidal flats and shallow marine environments while sediments of the Agbaja Formation were produced by a shallow marine system with a high tidal influence.

In easternTexas, a thick (150-200 ft) interval of Lower Cretaceous upper Glen Rose D strata was deposited in the Houston trough intrashelf basin landward of the Stuart City reef margin and seaward of the main eastern Texas intrashelf basin. The stratigraphic section in this intrashelf basin forms a primarily oil-bearing hydrocarbon system where porous grainstones in the Alabama Ferry and Fort Trinidad fields were deposited coevally with organic-rich calcareous argillaceous mudstones. Here, we present evidence to suggest that the depositional setting within the Houston trough and the contained ooid grainstone beds were of deeper-water origin (400-500 ft), below storm wave base. Further, the water column was stratified, allowing dysaerobic to anaerobic conditions to develop, fostering accumulation and preservation of organic matter. Grain-rich gravity flows consisting of ooids, intraclasts, and thin-walled mollusks, derived from the shallower shelf to the northwest, were deposited in the basin, forming the Alabama Ferry and Fort Trinidad fields. The upper Glen Rose interval is composed of lithofacies that vary laterally within the Houston trough. Five lithofacies are recognized on the basis of sedimentary features, texture, fabric, biota, and organic-matter content: (1) laminated to nonlaminated argillaceous lime mudstone to lime wackestone; (2) laminated to nonlaminated calcareous siliciclastic mudstone to siltstone; (3) intraclast–ooid skeletal lime packstone; (4) intraclast–bivalve–ooid lime grainstone; and (5) oyster lime floatstone and rudstone. Grain-rich lithofacies laterally adjacent to and interbedded with organic-rich argillaceous lime mudstones and calcareous siliciclastic mudstones were previously interpreted as being deposited in a tidally influenced, high-energy, shallow-water shoal environment; however, reconstruction of the depositional setting and interpretation of the vertical and lateral distribution of lithofacies suggest that these lithofacies were deposited as grain-rich gravity flows into the deeper-water Houston trough. This interpretation suggests a new conceptual framework integrating facies models from submarine channel and fan complexes to explore for grainstone reservoirs similar to Alabama Ferry and Fort Trinidad fields.

The present paper deals with the study of the depositional environment and tectonic setting during the sedimentation of the Barail Group of rocks of the Indo-Myanmar Ranges (IMR). The Barail Group (Oligocene) consist of sandstone intercalated with shale and siltstone. Geochemical study suggests low to high degree of chemical weathering. ICV vs. CIA, Al2O3 vs. TiO2 diagrams indicate that the sediments were derived from the multiple source rocks dominantly of mafic composition. Arid to semi-arid/semi-humid climate prevailed during the deposition of the Barail Group sediments. Sedimentation occurred in a tectonic setting of overlap of passive to active continental margin under marine environment.

The lower Jurassic Lathi Formation covers about 900 sq. km area and forms the lowermost unit of Jaisalmer Basin of western Rajasthan. Lithologically the Lathi Formation comprises of conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, shale and mudstone. The sandstones are generally medium- to coarse-grained, moderately sorted and show variation in colour, grain-size and texture. Petrographic studies indicate a mixed provenance for the Lathi sandstone. On the basis of geochemical data, theses sandstones are classified into sub-arkose, litharenite and sub-litharenite. Palaeo-weathering indices such as CIA (80.45), CIW (85.23) and PIA (84.23) suggest moderate to high degree of chemical weathering of the source area, intermediate and felsic igneous provenance, under humid to semi-humid climatic conditions. Further, the geochemical data indicate the sedimentation in a passive continental margin setting. The Bouguer gravity image clearly depicts the north westward slope of the basement. Modelling studies of the gravity data revealed average depth to the basement as 800m, 400m and 250m respectively in northwest, central and southeastern parts of the surveyed area. Exploration activities by Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research have resulted in location of several uranium anomalies in the Lathi Formation. Lathi Formation is characterised by many favourable parameters such as fertile provenance, arkosic sandstones intercalated with shale/mudstone, reduced sedimentary facies with carbonaceous matter, lignite and pyrite deposited in continental to marginal marine environment. Malani Igneous Suit and metamorphic rocks constitute the basement for Jaisalmer Basin. Malani rhyolites and granites are fertile source of uranium, containing 6.7 ppm and 9.2 ppm average and intrinsic uranium respectively. Presence of carbonaceous matter and pyrite bearing sandstones, indicative of reducing environment at depth below water table (R.L. 150 m), was reported during subsurface exploration in Lathi sandstone which is a favourable condition for Lathi sediments to host uranium mineralization.

Accumulations of cephalopods in the Late Ordovician (Katian [Ka4]) Troutbeck Siltstone Member of the Ash Gill Mudstone Formation at Skelghyll Beck in the Lake District and in the Keisley Limestone Formation of the Cross Fell Inlier contribute toward an understanding of their respective depositional environments as well as the palaeogeography of the southeastern margins of the Lakesman Terrane. The accumulation present in the Troutbeck Siltstone Member is interpreted as having been deposited in a shallow, near-shore lagoon that supported stromatolite growth. The shore lay to the north of this site. Geopetals infilling cephalopods forming concentrations in the Keisley Limestone Formation indicate that the conchs came to rest on angles of 30–40° to horizontal. The lithologies of the matrix suggest that they were deposited in cavities or fissures from which fine-grained carbonate was either excluded or winnowed away. Both observations accord with hypotheses that the Keisley Limestone Formation represents the remnants of a carbonate mud mound, and facilitate comparison with the contemporaneous Boda mounds of Siljan, Sweden. Comparison with local late Katian – Hirnantian successions indicate that the Keisley mound would have formed a prominent feature on the sea floor, becoming largely buried by argillaceous sediments during the Hirnantian.

The Lower Member of the Longmaxi Formation is generally dominated by siliceous shale, but recently we found some siltstone-mudstone rhythm sections developed in the Lower Member of the Longmaxi Formation. The study of formation mechanism of siltstone-mudstone rhythmic sedimentary sections may provide new insights into the shale sedimentary environment. Therefore, we studied the characteristics and formation mechanism of siltstone-mudstone rhythmic sedimentary sections in the Lower Member of the Longmaxi Formation in the Changning area based on core observation, thin section identification, major elements and trace elements analysis. The results show the following: 1) Two siltstone-mudstone rhythmic sedimentary sections are characterized by frequent interbed between black or gray-black shale and light gray siltstone, abundant argillaceous laminas and silty laminas, with obvious lithological boundaries having developed. Horizontal laminas and rhythmic laminas are well-developed in the shale layer, while the wavy laminas are well-developed in the siltstone layer. 2) The major compositional elements are SiO2, Al2O3 and CaO, followed by Fe2O3, MgO, K2O and Na2O. 3) Compared with the world average shale, these siltstone-mudstone rhythmic sedimentary sections are rich in Mo, U and Ba, but less in V, Co, Ni, Cu. Compared with the shale layer, the siltstone layer has lower contents of V, Co and Ni. 4). The geochemical redox indices, Mo-U and CIA values suggest the formation of the siltstone-mudstone rhythmic sedimentary sections are related to influences from bottom currents in an oxic condition with a warm and humid paleoclimate.

The lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation is of crucial importance for shale gas target reservoirs in western Hubei, China; however, little work has been done in this field, and its shale gas accumulation and enrichment mechanism are still unclear. Based on survey wells, outcrop data, and large numbers of tests, the geological conditions of shale gas accumulation were studied; moreover, the factors that influence the gas content were thoroughly discussed. The results show that the Niutitang Formation (Є1n) can be divided into three sections: the first section (Є1n1), the second section (Є1n2), and the third section (Є1n3). The Є1n2 is the main shale gas reservoir. The deep shelf facies is the main sedimentary facies and can be divided into three main lithofacies: argillaceous siltstone, carbonaceous shale and carbonaceous siliceous rock. The total organic carbon (TOC) content shows gentle growth trends until bottom of the Є1n2 and then decreases rapidly within the Є1n1, and the TOC content mainly ranges from 2% to 4% horizontally. The calcite and dolomite dissolution pores, clay intergranular pores and organic pores are the main pore types and the micropore types are clearly related to the mineral compositions and the TOC content. Vertically, the gas content is mainly affected by the TOC content. Horizontally, wells with high gas contents are distributed only southeast of the Huangling anticline, and the combination of structural styles, fault and fracture development, and the distribution of the regional unconformity boundary between the upper Sinian Dengying Formation (Z2d) and the Є1n2 are the three most important factors affecting the gas content. The favorable areas must meet the following conditions: a deep shelf environment, the presence of the Є1n1, wide and gentle folds, far from large normal faults that are more than 5 km, moderate thermal evolution, and greater than 500 m burial depth; this includes the block with the YD2-ZD2 wells, and the block with the Y1 and YD4 wells, which are distributed in the southern portion of the Huangling anticline and northern portion of the Xiannvshan fault.

Serpih minyak merupakan batuan sedimen halus yang mengandung material organik dan dapat menghasilkan minyak ketika diekstraksi. Formasi Sinamar di daerah penelitian diduga merupakan formasi pembawa serpih minyak. Formasi ini terletak di bagian barat dan tenggara daerah penelitian dan diperkirakan berumur Oligosen. Berdasarkan data sumur BRP-02, litologi Formasi Sinamar di daerah penelitian tersusun oleh serpih, batulanau, batupasir dan batulempung karbonan. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui karakter serpih minyak pada Formasi Sinamar yang tersebar di daerah Rantau Pandan, Kabupaten Bungo, Provinsi Jambi. Sebanyak 25 sampel batuan serpih diambil dari sumur pengeboran untuk dilakukan analisis-analisis: maseral, reflektansi vitrinit, pirolisis, total organic carbon (TOC) dan ektraksi batuan. Hasil analisis maseral yang dilakukan diketahui bahwa sampel batuan didominasi oleh maseral liptinit. Hasil analisis TOC menunjukkan bahwa kandungan material organik sampel batuan berkisar 3,40-17,60% merupakan batuan sedimen yang berpotensi baik hingga sangat baik sebagai batuan sumber hidrokarbon. Tingkat kematangan material organik berada pada tahap belum matang hingga lewat matang. Berdasarkan data hasil ekstraksi batuan yang dilakukan terhadap sampel batuan diperoleh kandungan minyak berkisar 10 -150 liter/ton batuan atau dengan rata-rata 56 liter/ton batuan.

For the first time, a detailed diagnostics and classification of soils of the Suntar-Khayata Range have been performed. This study is a continuation of long-term soil research in the Verkhoyansk mountainous soil province. The morphogenetic properties of soils in different altitudinal zones of the Suntar-Khayata Range are described, and the position of these soils in the new Russian soil classification system is determined. The Suntar-Khayata Range (63° N; 139° E) is found near the Pole of Cold of the northern hemisphere and is characterized by the distinct altitudinal zonation. In the study area, parent materials are represented by sandstone and, less often, by siltstone. In the warm season, the upper boundary of permafrost can be clearly traced only in the profiles of low-stony soils on the floodplains. The vertical zonality in the studied area includes the following zones: the valley zone ( 1500 m a.s.l.) with a predominance of lithozems (Leptosols). All the soils are relatively shallow, stony, and coarse-textured; their organic horizons are thin, and raw-humus (AO) horizons tend to predominate. Gley features are absent in the soil profiles. The soils have an acid or a slightly acid reaction, low base saturation (except for alluvial soils), and signs of organic matter illuviation. The results of this study can be used to expand the database on soils of poorly studied cold continental mountain regions of Eurasia.

The Burgali deposit is located in the Paleozoic Kedon volcanic belt (KVB) within the Omolon cratonic terrane. The orebodies of the Burgali deposit are veined and stockwork-type. The studies of the wallrock metasomatites demonstrate that the erosional truncation of the deposit is close to minimal. The ores of the deposit are enriched in the chalcophile elements (Au, Ag, As, Sb, Te, W, Mo, and Bi) and poor in the rare earths. The rare-earth element (REE) spectra are dominated by light lanthanides. The ores are characterized as very low-sulfidation with finely disseminated mineralization, widespread occurrence of chalcedony, and widespread colloform-banded, often combined with brecciated, structures. The late quartz veins contain Lower Carboniferous coaly siltstone fragments, filled with petrified timber remains, which indicate the Carboniferous age of the ore mineralization. The ores contain widespread Au- and Te-bearing pearceite and rare minerals such as argyrodite and the selenous petrovskaite and uytenbogaardtite. The data obtained enable the Burgali deposit to be classified as low-sulfidation epithermal. The outlook for Ag and Au reserve additions is based on the further studies and exploration of the ore-bearing stockwork.

The Barremian-Cenozoic depositional sequences in the northern Orange Basin, SW, South Africa, were investigated using the principles of seismic stratigraphy to understand the interplay of tectonics and sedimentary processes in the distribution of potential hydrocarbon reservoirs. A seismic stratigraphic workflow (seismic sequence, seismic facies and lithofacies analysis) was completed by utilising three seismic lines (L1, L2 and L3) tied to Wireline data (gamma, checkshots and sonic) in two exploration wells (A1 and A2). Seven depositional sequences were mapped followed by the creation of lithofacies log interpreted from the gamma-ray log (GR) by setting maximum GR value at 60 API for Sandstone, 60–100 API for Siltstone and above 100 API for Shale. Six seismic facies units are recognised based on internal geometry and configurations of the seismic reflectors; Tangential-Oblique (SF1), Hummocky (SF2), Wavy-Parallel (SF3), Chaotic (SF4), Sub-parallel/parallel (SF5) and Divergent (SF6). SF4 is dominant within the Barremian-Aptian sequence and expressed in an incised valley fill, suggesting mass transport deposition accompanied by strong hydrodynamic conditions. Evidence of sedimentary basins progradation is seen within the Late-Albian-Turonian sequences, because of the occurrences of SF2, SF6 and SF 4 facies. SF5 facies is prominent in the Maastrichtian/Campanian sequence, indicating that the deposition of sediments may have been accompanied by uniform margin subsidence after the Late-Cretaceous uplift of the Africa margin. The occurrence of SF1 and SF4 facies within the Cenozoic sequence indicates terrigenous pro-deltaic deposits and mass transport deposits, respectively. Further results from seismic-lithofacies modelling reveal that sand deposits of Barremian-Aptian (SF4 facies unit) and Albian sequences (SF2 and SF6 facies units) are potential stratigraphic reservoirs in this part of the basin.

Gamma ray logs are most useful in identifying subsurface lithology and interpreting depositional environments. This study highlights the use of outcrop gamma-ray logs along with outcrop observations and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis to provide the stratigraphic framework of the organic-rich rocks of Huai Hin Lat Formation in central Thailand. The study reveals five sedimentary facies including (1) structureless sandstone, (2) structured sandstone, (3) interbedded sandstone and siltstone, (4) interbedded mudstone and siltstone and (5) calcareous mudstone. These facies can be grouped into two facies associations; mudstone-dominated and sandstone-dominated facies associations. The depositional environment was interpreted as lacustrine basin- fill subdivided into deep lacustrine environment and sublacustrine fan associated with the turbidity currents. The total gamma-log characteristics are closely related to the lithologies controlled primarily by clay mineral compositions. Whist, the use of spectral gamma-ray can reveal more details on depositional environments and conditions. In this study, uranium (U) concentrations is proven to be useful in highlighting organic-rich rocks in low potassium (K) and thorium (Th) concentration successions due to its ability to be fixed in clay minerals and organic materials under an anoxic condition. Thus, the U spectral gamma ray is suggested to combine with conventional gamma ray log for depositional environment and recognition of organic-rich rocks.

The stratigraphic sequence exposed in Wandhaya area comprises of marine clastic sediments of Mesozoic, which includes M-III and M-IV of Jumara Formation, Lower Member of Jhuran Formation and Upper Member of Bhuj Formation. Lithofacies erected from the study area are Shale Facies (SF), Oolitic Limestone Facies (OLF), Intercalated Shale Siltstone Facies (ISSF) and Massive Sandstone Facies (MSF). SF is developed in M-III and M-IV of Jumara Formation suggesting its deposition in transition zone. Oolitic Limestone Facies (OLF) occurs only in M-IV of Jumara Formation indicates its depositional environment as offshore region. Intercalated Shale Siltstone Facies (ISSF) is deposited in lower shoreface to transitional and Massive Sandstone Facies (MSF) in foreshore environment, are exposed in Lower Member of Jhuran Formation and also in Upper Member of Bhuj Formation. The sediment characteristics and association of trace fossils in the rocks indicate distinction in sedimentation from foreshore to offshore environments.

A set of shale-dominated source rocks series were deposited during the heyday of lake basin development in the Member 7 of Triassic Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin, and the thickness is about 110 m. Aimed at whether this layer can form large-scale oil enrichment of industrial value, comprehensive geological research and exploration practice have been carried out for years and obtained the following important geologic findings. Firstly, widely distributed black shale and dark mudstone with an average organic matter abundance of 13.81% and 3.74%, respectively, lay solid material foundation for the formation of shale oil. Secondly, sandy rocks sandwiched in thick organic-rich shale formations constitute an oil-rich “sweet spot”, the average thickness of thin sandstone is 3.5 m. Thirdly, fine-grained sandstone and siltstone reservoirs have mainly small pores of 2–8 μm and throats of 20–150 nm in radius, but with a large number of micro-pores and nano-throats, through fracturing, the reservoirs can provide good conductivity for the fluid in it. Fourthly, continued high-intensity hydrocarbon generation led to a pressure difference between the source rock and thin-layer reservoir of up to 8–16 MPa during geological history, driven by the high pressure, the oil charged into the reservoirs in large area, with oil saturation reaching more than 70%. Under the guidance of the above theory, in 2019, the Qingcheng Oilfield with geologic oil reserves of billion ton order was proved in the class I multi-stage superimposed sandstone shale reservoir of Chang 7 Member by the Changqing Oilfield Branch through implementation of overall exploration and horizontal well volume fracturing. Two risk exploration horizontal wells were deployed for the class II thick layer mud shale interbedded with thin layers of silt- and fine-sandstones reservoir in the Chang 73 submember, and they were tested high yield oil flows of more than 100 tons per day, marking major breakthroughs in petroleum exploration in class I shale reservoirs. The new discoveries have expanded the domain of unconventional petroleum exploration.

A surface section of the Gercus Formation (Middle-Late Eocene) was studied in Berafat area, Dohuk Governorate, Northern Iraq. The Gercus Formation consists of a mixed siliciclastic sediments, evaporates and carbonate sequences in the studied region, predominantly in the upper and middle parts. Nevertheless, it usually consists of upward-fining carbonate-rich sandstone cyclothems, marl, conglomerate and siltstone along with a gypsum lens and thin micrite carbonate beds. The Gercus Formation was deposited in delta and delta front of occasionally depositional environment which is represented by red-brown claystone and reddish-brown mudstone lithofacies. Cross bedded pebbly sandstone, trough cross-bedded sandstone and laminated cross-bedded sandstone lithofacies are deposited in braided delta environment. Marl lithofacies and gypsum lithofacies are deposited in intertidal and supratidal environments. The sea level fluctuation caused the river base level to occasionally rise and fall. In addition, the process changed from erosion to deposition, while the grain size also changed at different environments from gravel to sand and clays. The Gercus succession of northern Iraq was developed during the Middle-Late Eocene in an active margin basin, where the last stage closure of the New-Tethys and its collision with the Eurasian plate took place between the northeastern Arabian plate. It caused major episodes of uplifts and subsidence along with base level variations due to eustatic ups and downs. Within Gercus Formation, several fourth order cycles can be recognized, reflecting generally asymmetrical cycles, as well as the difference between sediment supply and accommodation space.

U-Pb geochronology was conducted by Laser Ablation-Inductively Couple Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) on detrital zircon grains from twenty-nine samples from the Coconino Sandstone, Moenkopi Formation, and Chinle Formation. These samples were recovered from ∼520 m of drill core that was acquired during the Colorado Plateau Coring Project (CPCP), located in Petrified Forest National Park (Arizona). A sample from the lower Permian Coconino Sandstone yields a broad distribution of Proterozoic and Paleozoic ages that are consistent with derivation from the Appalachian and Ouachita orogens, with little input from local basement or Ancestral Rocky Mountain sources. Four samples from the Holbrook Member of the Moenkopi Formation yield a different set of Precambrian and Paleozoic age groups, indicating derivation from the Ouachita orogen, the East Mexico Arc, and the Permo-Triassic arc built along the Cordilleran margin. Twenty-three samples from the Chinle Formation contain variable proportions of Proterozoic and Paleozoic zircon grains, but are dominated by Late Triassic grains. LA-ICPMS ages of these grains belong to five main groups that correspond to the Mesa Redondo Member, Blue Mesa Member and lower part of the Sonsela Member, upper part of the Sonsela Member, middle part of the Petrified Forest Member, and upper part of the Petrified Forest Member. The ages of pre-Triassic grains also correspond to these chronostratigraphic units, and are interpreted to reflect varying contributions from the Appalachian orogen to the east, Ouachita orogen to the southeast, Precambrian basement exposed in the Ancestral Mogollon Highlands to the south, East Mexico arc, and Permian-Triassic arc built along the southern Cordilleran margin. Triassic grains in each chronostratigraphic unit also have distinct U and Th concentrations, which are interpreted to reflect temporal changes in the chemistry of arc magmatism. Comparison of our LA-ICPMS ages with available CA-TIMS ages and new magnetostratigraphic data provides new insights into the depositional history of the Chinle Formation, as well as methods utilized to determine depositional ages of fluvial strata. For parts of the Chinle Formation that are dominated by fine-grained clastic strata (e.g. mudstone and siltstone), such as the Blue Mesa Member and Petrified Forest Member, all three chronometers agree (to within ∼1 m.y.), and robust depositional chronologies have been determined. In contrast, for stratigraphic intervals dominated by coarse-grained clastic strata (e.g., sandstone), such as most of the Sonsela Member, the three chronologic records disagree due to recycling of older zircon grains and variable dilution of syn-depositional-age grains. This results in LA-ICPMS ages that significantly pre-date deposition, and CA-TIMS ages that range between the other two chronometers. These complications challenge attempts to establish a well-defined chronostratigraphic age model for the Chinle Formation, and to evaluate possible connections among fundamental Late Triassic biotic and climatic changes, a red siliceous horizon encountered in the CPCP core, and the ∼215.5 Ma Manicouagan impact.

The Buddhist sacred site of Taya Caves is a gem hidden underground in Yokohama, Japan. The caves were excavated and sculpted into bare rock by Shingon Buddhist monks from the Kamakura until the Edo period (thirteenth–nineteenth century), and dedicated to ascetic training, rituals, and pilgrimage. They are a maze of halls and galleries decorated with hundreds of rock-cut reliefs, picturing deities and masters of Buddhism, temples and shrines, real and fantastic animals, vegetal motifs, mandalas, zodiac signs, family crests, etc. The history and rock art of Taya Caves and the urge to preserve their cultural value led to this first-ever scientific investigation, dealing with the stone properties, deterioration, and environmental setting. Textural, mineralogical, geochemical, and petrophysical investigations were combined with a microclimate monitoring and chemical analyses of groundwater and rainwater. The caves are excavated into a clay-rich fossiliferous siltstone, extremely soft and porous and highly susceptible to water-driven weathering. Water represents a constant in Taya Caves, either flowing, dripping, and stagnant; or rising from the subsoil; or related to the extremely high relative humidity. Crusts and efflorescences represent important indicators of mineral dissolution and mobilization. The crusts are made of gypsum, crystallized from the dissolution of calcareous bioclasts and oxidation of pyrite, with minor calcite. The efflorescences are composed of chlorides, phosphates, sulfates, and carbonates, possibly deriving from agrochemicals and the surface vegetation cover. The salt weathering is strictly related to the microenvironmental variables and physico-chemical properties of the phases and waters involved. Rock-water interaction is particularly damaging even considering just the physical mechanisms. The stone is strongly sensitive to water absorption, hygroscopic adsorption, and slaking: the stresses generated by in-pore water and air movement and the swelling clay minerals may lead to rapid disintegration, especially during cyclic processes. This research is expected to raise concerns about the safeguard of Taya Caves and support future monitoring and conservation plans, and to foster a wider promotion and valorization of this heritage site.

Well preserved cyclocrinitids (calcareous green algae) are reported from early Palaeozoic deposits of Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, India. Casts of the algal fossils are preserved in calcareous grey siltstone unit of the Takche Formation (Late Ordovician–Early Silurian) which appears rusty/earthy brown due to weathering. The assemblage includes Cyclocrinites favus, Cyclocrinites pyriformis, Cyclocrinites cf. welleri, Cyclocrinites sp. and Cyclocrinites globosus. Both Cyclocrinites cf. welleri and Cyclocrinites globosus are reported for the first time from the entire Tethyan Himalaya, India. The described algal flora basically denotes relatively shallow marine depositional setting and low to moderate hydrodynamic conditions.

Malkara coals are located in the Oligocene-aged Danismen Formation in the Thrace Tertiary coal basin. The Danismen Formation consists of limestone, sandstone, tuffite, siltstone, claystone and intercalated coal. Elemental and specific natural radionuclide concentrations of lignites collected from Tekirdag–Malkara coalfield were determined, and the associated radiological risk was assessed. In order to examine the depth-dependent radionuclide concentration changes, samples were taken from top, middle and bottom parts of the boreholes. Gamma spectrometric measurements of radionuclide activities were performed with HPGe detector. The calculated mean 226Ra, 232Th and 40K concentrations were 27.0 ± 3.57, 18.9 ± 3.28 and 155 ± 36.1 Bq kg−1, and the measured U, Th, Pb and K concentrations were 4.04, 6.27, 10.6 ppm and 0.82%, respectively. Findings were comparable with the reported literature for Turkey and other countries from the world. The dose due to the radionuclide content of lignites was not very high to pose a serious health risk.

Molybdenum (Mo) systematics (i.e., total concentration and isotope ratios) are widely used for the reconstruction of paleo-redox conditions in sedimentary records. However, the geochemical processes affecting the distribution of Mo in carbonaceous fine-grained sedimentary rocks remain unclear. This study investigates how the organic matter type may control Mo concentration and speciation in siltstone/shale strata of the Lower Triassic Montney Formation in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) to identify the effects of hydrocarbon expulsion and migration, fluid/rock interactions, and thermal maturity on Mo geochemistry when used as a paleo-redox proxy. The bulk Mo concentration in the studied samples varies from 0.2 to 86 ppm (mean = 13 ± 16.7 ppm), with Mo enrichment factors of 22.7 ± 24.4 suggesting an anoxic paleo-depositional setting. The X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) results show the presence of two separate Mo species within distinct geographic locations: (1) a group with a higher average Mo oxidation state where Mo is mostly surrounded by oxygen (O) atoms in an octahedral configuration, and (2) a group showing a lower average Mo oxidation state where Mo is mostly surrounded by sulfur (S) atoms in a tetrahedral configuration. The reduced Mo species are distributed in the vicinity of fault-related hydrothermal diagenesis/dolomitization zones. In contrast, the oxidized Mo species are found associated with samples enriched with solid bitumen/pyrobitumen. The results of our study show Mo speciation can significantly help to elucidate complex paleo-redox histories.

The Hangu Formation (Paleocene) consists of sandstone, siltstone, carbonaceous shale, coal and laterite. It is well exposed in the Trans Indus Surghar range and the southern Hazara basin. The sandstone is yellowish brown, fine to coarse grained and medium to thick bedded. The sandstone of the Hangu Formation is classified as quartz arenite on the Q-F-L diagram. It is mostly grain supported and are cemented by silica cement. The study of different stratigraphic sections reveal that Hangu Formation can be sub-divided into a number of lithofacies on the basis of sedimentary structures and lithological variations.These include lateritic lithofacies, coal and carbonaceous shale, cross-bedded sandstone, bioclastic limestone and bioturbated sandstone. All these lithofacies are well-developed in the Baroch Nala section of the Surghar range except the lateritic lithofacies which contains a thin bed of ferruginous clay. In the studied sections of the Hazara basin, the lateritic lithofacies is the only well-developed lithofacies present in the area. The coal occurs at two stratigraphic levels in the Baroch Nala section. The lower coal seam is thick and its chemical study indicates higher calorific value and carbon content than the upper coal seam and with low moisture/ash content. On the basis of the calorific value, the coal of the Hangu Formation is characterized as highvolatile bituminous. The degree of laterization is strong in the Langrial and Khanpur sections and moderate in Baroch Nala section

Engineering geological characteristics of the rapidly growing Auckland urban area are of increasing interest due to ongoing and planned tunnels and excavations. Auckland is mainly underlain by Miocene-age East Coast Bays Formation (ECBF), a highly heterogeneous flysch deposit, and is also affected by lava flows from the Late Quaternary Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF). Therefore, excavations in the region can encounter highly variable rock mass. Here, the geological strength index (GSI) and rock mass rating (RMR) were applied to outcrop in coastal cliff exposures located on Auckland’s North Shore, to evaluate the engineering geological properties of the ECBF. Samples were also extracted for laboratory analysis of elastic wave velocities, intact strength parameters and thin section analysis of microtexture. Specific issues identified include lenses of the heavily zeolitized Parnell Volcaniclastic Conglomerate, and marked strength contrasts within the weaker ECBF siltstone and sandstone. The ECBF sandstone, where uncemented, is much weaker and is highly permeable, while the presence of smectite clay may be problematic for tunnelling if it disaggregates, forming a ‘sticky spoil’. The presence of larger-scale defects has been problematic for tunnelling, including the presence of low shear strength clay seams along ECBF bedding planes, and bedding planes intersecting tunnel crowns.

Detailed facies characterization in the Wolfcamp B and lower Spraberry intervals of two drill cores in the Midland Basin has yielded five main lithofacies with distinctive physical, chemical, and biologic attributes. The main attributes for facies identification include lithology and/or mineralogy, texture and/or fabric, porosity, hydrogen index, and total organic carbon content. The methodologies are focused on detailed core description, thin-section petrography, quantitative x-ray diffraction, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Porosity data are primarily based on Gas Research Institute (Core Laboratories) measurements and field emission SEM assessment. Moreover, the depositional and diagenetic controls on facies development are addressed to assess the dominant geological processes that govern reservoir quality and distribution. A model of five end-member facies is proposed to characterize source and reservoir elements through delineating facies tracts. The five end-member facies are as follows: facies 1: silty mudstone, optimal source, and optimal to fair reservoir; facies 2: muddy siltstone (optimal source and optimal reservoir); facies 3: silty calcareous mudstone (good source and good reservoir); facies 4: bioclastic wackestone–floatstone (fair source and fair reservoir); and facies 5: packstone–grainstone (poor source and poor to excellent reservoir). The proposed facies scheme aims to provide a more comprehensive approach to capture the high vertical and lateral variability in this mixed carbonate and fine-grained clastic succession. Through this detailed textural, compositional, sedimentologic, and diagenetic approach, this facies model can be used to better understand reservoir quality and distribution throughout the Midland Basin.

The sandstone of the Silurian Xiaoheba Formation in the Sichuan Basin is poorly understood and the exploration prospect is unclear. The geological characteristics of oil and gas from the aspects of sedimentation, reservoir and accumulation of the sandstone of the Xiaoheba Formation in the Sichuan Basin, as well as evaluating its exploration potential and prospect, were made possible using the data on field outcrops, exploratory wells, as well as seismic and logging data. By studying the above, the following four points are understood. (1) The sandstone of the Xiaoheba Formation in the Sichuan Basin is mainly dominated by siltstone. There are two types of sand masses: the distal sandbank sand mass of the foreland basin delta front and the thin layer sand mass intercalated with pro-delta mudstone. The two types of sand masses are widely distributed in east Sichuan. (2) The sandstone reservoir of the Xiaoheba Formation is characterized by low porosity, low permeability and extra density. The late-stage diagenesis led to the densification of the reservoir. Intervals with relatively high porosity were developed locally and satisfactory reservoirs could be developed in the period of reservoir forming. (3) The sandstone reservoir of the Xiaoheba Formation, the high-quality argillaceous hydrocarbon source rocks of the Longmaxi Formation, and the thick layer mud shale caprocks of the Hanjiadian Formation formed a set of high-quality source rocks, reservoir, and caprock accumulation assemblage. The formation and evolution of the Kaijiang paleo-uplift in eastern Sichuan were conducive to the accumulation and preservation of the sandstones of the Xiaoheba Formation. (4) The sandstone of the Xiaoheba Formation is a potential field for natural gas exploration in the Sichuan Basin. Both types of sand masses have a certain potential, among which the favorable exploration area of the sand mass of the distal sandbank is about 10 × 103 km2. The study results are of great significance for improving geological understanding and guiding natural gas exploration in this field.

The Urzhumian (Wordian) and Severodvinian (Capitanian) reference section of the Monastery Ravine (Kazan Volga region, Russia), contains two siltstone lithofacies: (a) laminated and (b) massive. Depositional settings of the laminated siltstones can be interpreted as perennial to ephemeral lakes; depositional settings of the massive siltstones are interpreted as floodplains with soil cover and periodical silt influx in wet seasons. The bulk geochemistry of siliciclastics has revealed a high degree of weathering of both types of siltstone. The similar chemical composition, mineralogy, and grain size suggest the same provenance of silt material. Geochemical data indicate eastern source rocks, which are the Permian red beds of the Cis-Ural plains. The main genetic types of paleosols hosted in the massive siltstones in the studied section, include moderately developed Vertisols and Calcisols with drab-colored root traces, calcareous nodules, low chroma mottles, angular blocky peds and slickensides. These pedofeatures indicate in general a semi-arid climate with clear seasonality of rainfall. Major oxides of the paleosol matrix were used to estimate paleoprecipitation through the bases to alumina (ΣBases/Al) ratio and chemical index of alteration minus potassium (CIA-K) proxies. Estimates from Urzhumian paleosols indicate relatively low mean annual precipitation (MAP) of 390 mm/yr. The transition to the Severodvinian paleosols is marked by a noticeable MAP increase up to 777 mm/yr. This climate moistening coincides with changes in the morphology of paleosols from dolomitic with low redoximorphy to calcitic with gley horizons. The pedogenic carbonate nodules consisting of dolomicrite (5–10 μm) are very common in the Urzhumian paleosols and their morphology, micromorhology and isotopic features indicate the pedogenic origin of dolomite. Sedimentological and paleopedological features of the studied siltstones, as well as the location of the Volga-Ural basin in a mid-latitude position (25–32 °N) indicate a monsoonal character of precipitation during the Middle Permian.

The vertical zonality of the soil cover of the Verkhoyansk mountainous soil province is discussed. The soils of the landscape-ecological profile in the area of the Arkachan Plateau (65° N, 130° E) have been studied. Their morphogenetic characteristics and position in the new Russian soil classification system are analyzed. The absolute height of the mountains reaches 1200 m, the relative height ranges from 400 to 500 m. The plateau is composed of sandstone, siltstone, and shale of the Mesozoic age. The climate is cold and sharply continental. Permafrost has a continuous character. However, in the profile of mountainous soils, permafrost is often absent, as its upper table lies below the stony soil profile. In the vertical zonality of the Arkachan Plateau, mountainous tundra zone (>1100 m a.s.l.) and mountainous taiga zone (

Deep-marine and deep-lacustrine reservoirs have been targets for conventional and unconventional oil and gas exploration and development for decades. Thickening-upward cycles in the deep-marine Carboniferous Ross Sandstone Formation outcrops in western Ireland and the deep-lacustrine Triassic Yanchang Formation outcrops in southeast Ordos Basin have been investigated and correlated in this study. Typical thickening-upward cycles consisting of, from bottom to top: (1) laminated shales/shales with interbedded siltstone beds; (2) interbedded sandstones/siltstones and mudstones; (3) structureless massive sandstones, are well recognized in these outcrops and are interpreted as turbidite lobes. A continuously prograding lobe-element model is proposed to explain the repeated stacking of thickening-upward cycles. Thickening-upward cycles developed within deep-marine and deep-lacustrine environments are highly comparable in many aspects, such as sedimentary structures, sheet-like geometries and amalgamation features. A frequent and strong degree of amalgamation is developed within the massive sandstone at the top of each thickening-upward cycle, suggesting a layer-by-layer depositional manner. Field observations and comparison with deep-marine counterparts support the occurrence of turbidity flows in the Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin.

The Zhamanshin impact structure, which is about 1 Myr old, has a diameter of 14 km and is situated in the semi-arid region of Kazakhstan (48°24′N, 60°58′E). It has a heterogeneous suite of target rocks, including predominantly crustal lithologies (e.g., clays and siltstones) with minor ultramafics. Zhamanshin is known for its unique association of impact glasses, including basic and acidic varieties of zhamanshinites and (tektite-like and a few aerodynamically-shaped) irghizites. The origin of both of these impact glasses has long been debated, which is complicated by incomplete sampling of target lithologies at the Zhamanshin site and a limited number of isotopic analyses. However, such studies are a prerequisite for a comprehensive discussion of the mechanisms that formed the unique association of different impact glasses in one impact event. We present major and trace element contents, as well as combined Sr-Nd isotope data for target rocks and impact glasses from the Zhamanshin impact structure. These data, for the first time, include Paleogene clays and siltstones from a core drilled in the vicinity of the crater and cutting through all major target lithologies. The core samples contain important source lithologies for the impactites from the Zhamanshin area. Mixing calculations, based on geochemical data and Sr-Nd isotope signatures, indicate that irghizites and Si-rich zhamanshinites can be produced from variously homogenized mixtures of mainly clays and siltstones with minor additions of ultrabasic rocks. Based on highly siderophile element (HSE) and Os isotope data (including the first analyses of the clay and siltstone lithologies) we calculated a hypothetical Os composition of the irghizite precursor, allowing us to approximate a chondritic admixture to the irghizites of roughly 1% of a chondritic component. This confirms previous suggestions about the amount of extraterrestrial components. A new HSE and Os isotope dataset for five zhamanshinites reveals, on average, crust-like HSE concentrations and Os isotope compositions, confirming earlier suggestions of a lack of meteoritic admixtures to these impact glasses.

The Qusaiba Shale Formation of the Qalibah Group is the most prolific source rock for the Paleozoic petroleum system in Saudi Arabia and is recently considered as a potential unconventional shale gas reservoir. Detailed sedimentological, petrographical, and geochemical analyses were undertaken on an ~31 m thick outcrop of this organic-rich shale exposed in the northwest of Tayma City, NW of Saudi Arabia to provide a better understanding of the vertical and lateral lithofacies variations and the effects of such variations on reservoir properties. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that clay minerals (average: 50%) and quartz (average: 28%) dominate the bulk mineralogical composition while K-feldspar, plagioclase, and pyrite occur as common to minor components in the analyzed samples. An integration of the sedimentological description, petrography and mineralogical composition allows the subdivision of the investigated outcrop section into six lithofacies. These are: Laminated organic-rich shale, Graptolitic concretion, Massive organic-rich shale, Organic-lean shale, Siltstone-shale interbedded, and Cross-stratified siltstone/sandstone lithofacies. TOC content in the laminated and massive organic-rich shale lithofacies ranges between 0.5 and 6.1 wt% (average 2.52 wt%) then it decreases upward (0.04–0.35 wt%, average 0.18 wt%) in the overlying organic-lean shale and siltstone lithofacies. Trace elements (Cu, Mo, As, Ni, Co, U and V) show positive excursions in the lowermost 20 m of the organic-rich, dark-grey shale interval and display abrupt depletions at the contact with overlying organic-lean shale. The enrichment factors of these trace elements are characterized by similar distribution patterns as their measured concentrations. Like the elements, these factors also exhibit a significant depletion at the contact between the organic-rich shale and the overlying organic-lean shale. Out of all the redox indices, V/(V + Cr), V/(V + Ni), Th/U and [Mo]s/TOC were found to best distinguish between the organic-rich and the overlying organic-lean intervals. The laminated organic-rich shale lithofacies indicate deposition of hemipelagic sediments by a relatively low energy quiet anoxic bottom water, most likely in a sulfidic conditions that were associated with a strongly restricted bottom water mass circulation at the time of its deposition. This restricted hydrographic condition was likely enhanced in the study area due to the paleotopography that was created by the deglaciation of the Early Silurian time. The TOC richness, common occurrence of pyrite and high enrichment of redox elements Mo, U and V in the organic-rich shale intervals support the existence of anoxic bottom water at the time of deposition. The abrupt decrease of the TOC and the redox sensitive elements and their associated indices from the underlying organic-rich lithofacies to the overlying organic-lean shale lithofacies is likely due to a gradual increase in oxygen level. This improved bottom water oxygenation condition might have led to a reduction in organic productivity and limited organic matter preservation in the organic-lean shale lithofacies. The graptolitic concretion lithofacies found in the sequence, refers to an in-situ, syngenetic to early diagenetic origin formed close to the sediment-water layer when there was little or no deposition or at periods characterized by low sedimentation rates. The siltstone - fine sandstone lithofacies in the topmost part of the studied section, is interpreted to indicate the dominance of high energy and highly oxygenated shallow bottom water conditions during deposition, probably in a middle to inner shelf depositional settings. The kerogen in QS is a mixture of type III (gas prone) and type IV (inert kerogen), Tmax values with an average of 430 °C, and VRo values (average 0.58) calculated from the Tmax, assigned the studied section as immature. Qualitative evaluation of porosity allows the identification of three different types of porosity including inorganic porosity, organic porosity and natural fracture porosity. Although the ductile clay minerals are the most abundant minerals in the lower part of the studied QS (average 56%), the brittle minerals (Quartz, Feldspar, and Pyrite) form an average of 42% and exhibit a uniform distribution of brittleness in the organic-rich interval.

The tight oil sandstone reservoir of the Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation is one of the main targets for hydrocarbon exploration in the Ordos Basin, China. Sandstones of the Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation within lacustrine deep-water gravity-flow deposits are characterized by ultralow porosity, ultralow permeability, and complex diagenetic alterations and sedimentary lithofacies. However, the diagenetic alterations and their controls on the reservoir quality of the Chang 6 tight sandstones remain poorly understood. This study integrated a variety of techniques, such as casting thin section analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), back-scattered electron imagery (BSE), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy, and fluid inclusion, to investigate the lithofacies, diagenetic history, and diagenetic intensity, and also evaluate their controls on reservoir quality. The research results indicated that the Chang 6 sandstones exhibit variable intensity of diagenetic alterations among the various lithofacies, which leads to variable reservoir quality. Mechanical compaction was the most important factor reducing primary porosity. Sandstones of the Ss lithofacies (siltstone to very fine-grained sandstones with graded bedding or ripple laminations) showed the highest loss of primary porosity. Carbonate cements were commonly present in sandstones of the Sc (fine-grained and cross-bedded sandstones) and Sm (fine-grained and massive sandstones) lithofacies near the sandstone–mudstone bounding surface. Sandstones with more authigenic illite rims were able to resist compaction to some extent and were favorable to the preservation of porosity; however, abundant pore-filling illite aggregates commonly bridged pore throats, causing a significant reduction in reservoir quality. Feldspar dissolution porosity leads to a slight enhancement in reservoir quality. Intergranular pores and feldspar dissolution pores are most abundant in the sandstones away from the sandstone–mudstone bounding surface of the Sc lithofacies, resulting in the best reservoir quality, which is followed by sandstones of the Sm lithofacies. Ultimately, four evolution patterns of diagenetic alterations that formed best, moderate, or poor reservoir quality were summarized by linking diagenetic alterations to lithofacies. The research results are conducive to the evaluation of reservoir quality and to understanding the genetic mechanisms of tight sandstones, so they should facilitate hydrocarbon exploration and production in similar lacustrine deep-water gravity-flow reservoirs.

The Upper Cretaceous sedimentary facies in areas around Inyi and environs, southeastern Nigeria comprises Ajali and Nsukka formations. A total of 19 outcrops were mapped and logged. Interpretation was based on field facies analysis and laboratory tests which include granulometric and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of the rock samples. The objective of the study was to reconstruct the environment of deposition as well as understand the textural attributes of the sand size sediments for reservoir quality assessment. Eleven lithofacies: conglomeritic sandstone facies (Gc), cross-bedded sandstone facies (Scb), pebbly sandstone facies (Sp), bioturbated sandstone facies (Sb), heterolithic facies (Sht), claystone facies (Cl), coal facies (Co), bioturbated shale facies (Shb), laminated siltstone facies (Stl), muddy sandstone facies (Sm), and black carbonaceous shale facies (Shcb), were identified with four sub-facies occurring within low- to high-energy environment. These lithofacies were grouped into four facies association (FA1, FA2, FA3, and FA4). FA1 is dominantly conglomerates and pebbly sandstone deposited as channel/alluvial fan deposits. FA2 are deposits in a swamp or lagoon setting consisting of coal and black carbonaceous shale. FA3 is characterized by bioturbated sandstone, muddy sandstone, and heteroliths deposited in a lower shoreface setting. The cross-bedded sandstones and the heterolithic facies belong to the FA4 deposited in an upper shoreface setting. Sieve analysis results show sediments that are medium to coarse grained in sizes, poorly to moderately sorted, dominantly very negatively skewed to symmetrical and mainly mesokurtic. These granulometric attributes are typical of shallow marine deposits influenced by fluvial processes under low- to high-energy conditions. Result of XRD analysis show the presence of clay and non-clay minerals in the sediments, with quartz as the most dominant. Diagenetic processes which include compaction, cementation, precipitation, and dissolution influenced the reservoir quality of the sands. Compaction significantly reduced the primary porosity, and the sand-size grains (quartz) created a self-supporting framework while the clay minerals, mainly kaolinite and dickite, occluded the pores spaces. Dissolution removed some detrital grains leaving obvious indications of few interconnecting and independent pores and moderately to poorly sorted sands. These clay minerals bridge the pore throat connectivity and cause reduction in pore radii, and consequently reducing the reservoir potentials of the sands. However, the sediments could serve as potential hydrocarbon reservoirs especially for gas. The coal seams and the black carbonaceous shale facies can serve as the source or seal rocks whereas the sandstone, siltstone, and heteroliths are possible reservoir rocks of the petroleum system in the study area.

The Lower Cretaceous Nubian sandstones cover large areas in both NE Africa and Arabia. In this study, we utilized major and trace element data in combination with petrographic and heavy mineral analyses to infer the provenance model of the Nubian sandstones exposed at Gebel Duwi in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. It is established that these sandstones are mainly quartzose (quartz-arenite) and litho-quartzose deposited in fluvial and estuarine near-shore environments. The quartzose sandstones are dominantly fine to medium-grained in texture. The framework consists mainly of quartz grains (average 92.26% of rock volume), in addition to minor lithic fragments (average 4.6%), very rare feldspars (average 1.17%), and heavy mineral fractions (average 1.8%). The lithic fragments are represented mainly by siltstone and sandy siltstone, with minor lithics of gneisses. The heavy mineral assemblage comprises zircon, tourmaline, rutile (ZTR), garnet, and kyanite, with minor epidote, ilmenite, and leucoxene. Chemically, these sandstones are rich in SiO2 and poor in CaO, MgO, K2O, Na2O, and P2O5. From trace elements, the most abundant are Ba, Th, Zr, and Sr. The provenance-related interpretations of the established rock composition imply that the Nubian sandstones were sourced mainly from a relatively proximal Paleozoic sandstones through multiple stages of fluvial recycling and were deposited in low-lying basin areas in the passive continental margin. The modal composition analysis reflects that these sandstones are mainly of cratonic interior. The ZTR-dominated heavy mineral assemblage indicates an increasing proportion of detritus recycled from older siliciclastic units of Paleozoic age. The high chemical weathering indices indicate intense subaerial weathering in a humid environment and multiple episodes of reworking, with a considerable contribution of basement denudation. A stable tectonic regime is interpreted, and intracratonic activation is not recognized.

As the controlling effect of complex lithofacies of lacustrine mixed fine-grained rocks on the shale oil sweet spot remains unclear, core, outcrop, general logging, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging, testing, and production data were used to study the types, combination pattern, and genesis of lithofacies architectures of lacustrine mixed fine-grained rocks in the study area by lithofacies hierarchy analysis, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) logging, UAV, and 3D geological modeling. The research shows that: 1) According to lithology and sedimentary structure, the mixed fine-grained rocks can be divided into 13 lithofacies types of different origins in 5 sub-categories and 2 categories. 2) UAV photography was combined with a traditional field survey to characterize the 3D spatial distribution of lithofacies architecture of the Lucaogou Formation on the outcrop, and it is found that the lithofacies architecture patterns of mixed fine-grained rocks include three types: gradual change type, abrupt change type, and special type. The gradual change type with higher sand development degree and symmetrical lithofacies architecture has a high quality reservoir with dissolution pores, and is mixed beach-bar sand in the mixed zone. It is high in development degree and often appears as several similar cycles stacking over each other. The abrupt change type can be subdivided into two sub-types, asymmetric and smaller in reservoir thickness. It is very high in development degree and often comes in several similar cycles. The special type belongs to thick clastic rock relatively independent in the mixed fine-grained rocks with a high development degree of sand. The sand is a higher quality reservoir with properties of tight reservoir. It often appears as stacking of single cycle sand. 3) The different lithofacies architectures in the mixed fine-grained rocks have significant differences in distribution. The gradual change type is mainly composed of mudstone, dolomitic siltstone, and sandy dolomite, dolomitic siltstone, and mudstone, and appears in lenticular shape overlapping with each other on the plane. The abrupt change type is made up of felsic siltstone, dolomitic siltstone, sandy dolomite, and mudstone, and appears as isolated thin layers on the plane. The special type is mainly composed of mudstone and felsic siltstone, and mudstone, and turns up as lenses of different sizes on the plane.

Raw Data File 2021-13, Qualitative assessment of composition and reservoir quality of Albian-Cenomanian Nanushuk Formation sandstones, measured outcrop sections, central North Slope, Alaska, presents a qualitative appraisal of thin sections collected from Nanushuk outcrops to ascertain their reservoir potential. The DGGS sample collection was searched for petrographic thin sections collected from stratigraphic sections of the Nanushuk Formation measured by David LePain working with various colleagues, including Russ Kirkham, Paul Decker, Dave Houseknecht, and Nina Harun over the past 22 years. The search yielded 264 thin sections of Nanushuk siltstone and sandstone. Three additional thin sections of the Seabee Formation mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone were collected from the upper portion of a measured section that straddles the Nanushuk - Seabee contact. These 267 samples were collected from 32 stations located in eight geographic areas on the North Slope, including Slope Mountain, May Creek, Arc Mountain, Rooftop Ridge, Big Bend of the Chandler River, Ninuluk Bluff on the Colville River, Killik Bend of the Colville River, and Horseshoe Bend of the Colville River. The thin sections were examined qualitatively to ascertain several petrographic properties, including grain size, detrital composition, cement and matrix content, the abundance of burrows and laminations, and porosity distribution. Sedimentary structures observed in the field were noted, as was the interpreted sedimentary facies association. The results are compiled in a spreadsheet along with information on geographic location, latitude, longitude, and measured petrophysical properties (porosity, permeability, and grain density) of the few samples where available. Hybrid sedimentary rocks (HSR) are a major reservoir type in unconventional oil exploration. The reservoir characteristics and controlling factors of the oil content of HSR are not clear, restricting the understanding of the storage mechanism and sweet spots within HSR. The Lucaogou Formation in the western Jimusar Sag is taken as a case study. Starting with the classification of the lithofacies system, differences in the microscopic pore structure, oil content and controlling factors of HSR reservoirs are revealed. The results show that seven lithofacies are recognized based on mineral composition, sedimentary structure, and organic matter characteristics, exhibiting rapid vertical and horizontal changes affected by the sedimentary environment. Layered mudstone lithofacies of the shallow lake mud and massive dolomitic mudstone lithofacies of dolomitic mud flats have the worst physical properties and oil content properties. However, they do have high organic matter contents and are the main source rocks of the Lucaogou Formation. The massive argillaceous siltstone and massive argillaceous dolomite lithofacies interbed frequently. Although their physical properties are moderate, “source-reservoir integrated” unconventional oil reservoirs can be formed, due to the adjacent to the source rock. Massive dolomitic siltstone, massive siltstone, and massive silty dolomite lithofacies are developed in the middle of the Lucaogou Formation, with the highest proportion of mesopores and macropores, which is indicative of good storage properties. When these lithofacies are filled with crude oil generated from source rocks at the top and bottom of the formation, “source storage adjacent” unconventional oil reservoirs be formed. The oil content is also controlled by the pore structure and specific surface area. The proportion of macropores and mesopores is positively correlated with oil content. The oil content of the samples is very low, when the specific surface area exceeds 2 m2/g. This manuscript provides a geological basis for evaluating and establishing reasonable interpretation models of HSR sweet spots.

The sand intervals of the Early Cretaceous Lower Goru Formation are a conventional reservoir, generally distributed in the Middle and Lower Indus Basin of Pakistan. Lithostratigraphically formation is classified into two parts; the upper parts are predominantly composed of shale, siltstone, and thin layers of alternate shale and sandstone, while the lower parts are composed of sandstone with interlayering of shale and limestone. The sandstone of the Lower Goru Formation has been further divided into A, B, C, and D sand intervals based on reservoir quality. Detailed depositional facies and reservoir characteristics are essential for the evaluation of hydrocarbon exploration and development. This paper aims to evaluate the depositional environment and reservoir characterization of the siliciclastic reservoir of the Early Cretaceous Lower Goru Formation by integrating the gamma-ray log patterns and petrographic analysis, and Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) analysis. Petrographic characterization of the sand intervals and Gamma-Ray log signatures were used for the interpretation of the depositional environment of the reservoir intervals. Petrographic analysis reveals that the sandstone of the Lower Goru Formation is fine-to medium-grained, well-sorted, arkose or feldspathic arenite. Primary intergranular macroporosity, secondary intragranular macropores, and Intercrystalline micropores were identified within the sandstone by the SEM analysis. The diagenetic analysis suggests that the sandstone possesses high porosity, low permeability, and has undergone significant alterations such as compaction, quartz cementation, feldspar dissolution, and clay minerals alteration. Five electrofacies are interpreted based on gamma-ray log patterns including (1) Funnel shape (FA); (2) Bell shape (FB); (3) Cylindrical shape (FC); (4) Bow shape (FD); and (5) Serrated shape (FE) patterns. The interpreted facies results reveal shoreface environment for A-sand, Tidal flat for B-sand, mixed tidal flat for C sand, Tide dominated mixed for D-sand, and transgressive shelf for E−sand. The present study will be helpful for the assessment of the reservoir quality of the Early Cretaceous Lower Goru Formation for further exploration and development in the Indus Basin of Pakistan.

The oldest known, intact sedimentary record of a nascent intraoceanic arc was recovered in a ∼100-m-thick unit (IV) above ca. 49 Ma basaltic basement at International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1438 in the Amami Sankaku Basin. During deposition of Unit IV the site was located ∼250 km from the plate edge, where Izu-Bonin-Mariana subduction initiated at 52 Ma. Basement basalts are overlain by a mudstone-dominated subunit (IVC) with a thin basal layer of dark brown metalliferous mudstone followed by mudstone with sparse, graded laminae of amphibole- and biotite-bearing tuffaceous sandstone and siltstone. Amphibole and zircon ages from these laminae suggest that the intermediate subduction-related magmatism that sourced them initiated at ca. 47 Ma soon after basement formation. Overlying volcaniclastic, sandy, gravity-flow deposits (subunit IVB) have a different provenance; shallow water fauna and tachylitic glass fragments indicate a source volcanic edifice that rose above the carbonate compensation depth and may have been emergent. Basaltic andesite intervals in upper subunit IVB have textures suggesting emplacement as intrusions into unconsolidated sediment on a volcanic center with geochemical and petrological characteristics of mafic, differentiated island arc magmatism. Distinctive Hf-Nd isotope characteristics similar to the least-radiogenic Izu-Bonin-Mariana boninites support a relatively old age for the basaltic andesites similar to detrital amphibole dated at 47 Ma. The absence of boninites at that time may have resulted from the position of Site U1438 at a greater distance from the plate edge. The upper interval of mudstone with tuffaceous beds (subunit IVA) progresses upsection into Unit III, part of a wedge of sediment fed by growing arc-axis volcanoes to the east. At Site U1438, in what was to become a reararc position, the succession of early extensional basaltic magmatism associated with spontaneous subduction initiation is followed by a rapid transition into potentially widespread subduction-related magmatism and sedimentation prior to the onset of focused magmatism and major arc building.
