We use the Jordan frame-Einstein frame correspondence to explore dual universes with contrasting cosmological evolutions. We study the mapping between Einstein and Jordan frames where the Einstein frame universe describes the late-time evolution of the physical universe, which is driven by dark energy and non-relativistic matter. The Brans-Dicke theory of gravity is considered to be the dual scalar-tensor theory in the Jordan frame. We show that an Einstein frame universe, with cosmological evolution of the $\Lambda$CDM model, always corresponds to a bouncing Jordan frame universe governed by a Brans-Dicke theory. On the other hand, quintessence models of dark energy with non-relativistic matter component are shown to be always dual to a Brans-Dicke Jordan frame with a turn-around, i.e., a bounce or a collapse. The evolution of the equation of state of the quintessence field determines whether the turn-around is a bounce or a collapse. The point of the Jordan frame turn-around for all the cases can be tuned anywhere by choosing an appropriate Brans-Dicke parameter. This essentially leads to alternative descriptions of the late-time evolution of the physical universe, in terms of bouncing or collapsing Brans-Dicke universes in the Jordan frame. Therefore,the effect of dark energy can equivalently be seen as collapse of space in a conformally connected universe. We further study the stability of such conformal maps against linear perturbations. The effective bouncing and collapsing descriptions of the current accelerating universe may have interesting implications for the evolutions of perturbations and quantum fluctuations in the cosmological background., Comment: 36 pages, 12 figures, minor changes

The accelerated expansion of the universe demands presence of an exotic matter, namely the dark energy. Though the cosmological constant fits this role very well, a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity, or quintessence, can also be considered as a viable alternative for the cosmological constant. We study $f(R)$ gravity models which can lead to an effective description of dark energy implemented by quintessence fields in Einstein gravity, using the Einstein frame-Jordan frame duality. For a family of viable quintessence models, the reconstruction of the $f(R)$ function in the Jordan frame consists of two parts. We first obtain a perturbative solution of $f(R)$ in the Jordan frame, applicable near the present epoch. Second, we obtain an asymptotic solution for $f(R)$, consistent with the late time limit of the Einstein frame if the quintessence field drives the universe. We show that for certain class of viable quintessence models, the Jordan frame universe grows to a maximum finite size, after which it begins to collapse back. Thus, there is a possibility that in the late time limit where the Einstein frame universe continues to expand, the Jordan frame universe collapses. The condition for this expansion-collapse duality is then generalized to time varying equations of state models, taking into account the presence of non-relativistic matter or any other component in the Einstein frame universe. We use linear perturbation theory to study perturbations in dynamical dark energy models. We compare quintessence and tachyonic dark energy models with identical background evolution. We write the corresponding equations for different models in a form that makes it easier to see that the two models are very hard to distinguish in the linear regime, especially for models with $(1 + w) \ll 1$. We use Cosmic Microwave Background data and parametric representations for the two models to illustrate that they cannot be distinguished for the same background evolution with existing observations. Further, we constrain tachyonic models with the Planck data. We do this analysis for exponential and inverse square potentials and find that the intrinsic parameters of the potentials remain very weakly constrained. A non-canonical scalar tachyon field is a viable candidate for dark energy and has been found to be in good agreement with observational data. Background data alone cannot completely rule out degeneracy between this model and others. To further constrain the parameters, apart from the distance measurements, we study perturbations in the tachyon scalar field and how they affect matter clustering. We consider two tachyon potentials for this study, an inverse square potential and an exponential potential. We study the evolution of the gravitational potential, matter density contrast, and dark energy density contrast, and compare them with the evolution in the $\Lambda CDM $ model. Although perturbations in dark energy at sub-Hubble scales are negligible in comparison with matter perturbations, they cannot be ignored at Hubble and super-Hubble scales ($\lambda_p > 1000$ Mpc). We also study the evolution of growth function and growth rate of matter, and find that the growth rate is significantly suppressed in dark energy dominated era with respect to the growth rate for $\Lambda CDM$ model. A comparison of these models with Redshift Space Distortion growth rate data is presented by way of calculating $f\sigma_8(z)$. There is a tension of $2.9\sigma$ ($2.26\sigma$ ) between growth rate data and Planck-2015 (Planck-2018) Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation data for $\Lambda CDM$ model. The background evolution of an accelerated, dark energy dominated universe is aptly described by non-canonical tachyon scalar field models. The accelerated expansion of the universe is determined by the choice of a suitable scalar field potential; in the case of a tachyon field, a 'runaway' potential. In the absence of a fundamental theory, dark energy properties are studied in a phenomenological approach. This includes determining the model parameters using observations and to probe the allowed deviation from the cosmological constant model. In this paper, we present constraints on tachyon scalar field parameters from low redshift data for two different scalar field potentials. These scalar field potentials have been crucial in tachyon dark energy studies. The datasets considered in this paper include the supernova type Ia data, independent measurements of the Hubble parameter and the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation data. In this paper, we present constraints on tachyon field parameters using these observations and their combination. A combination of the datasets indicates that those model parameters are preferred which emulate the cosmological constant model. Dark energy must cluster in order to be consistent with the equivalence principle. The background evolution can be effectively modelled by either a scalar field or by a barotropic fluid.The fluid model can be used to emulate perturbations in a scalar field model of dark energy, though this model breaks down at large scales. In this paper we study evolution of dark energy perturbations in canonical scalar field models: the classes of thawing and freezing models.The dark energy equation of state evolves differently in these classes.In freezing models, the equation of state deviates from that of a cosmological constant at early times.For thawing models, the dark energy equation of state remains near that of the cosmological constant at early times and begins to deviate from it only at late times.Since the dark energy equation of state evolves differently in these classes,the dark energy perturbations too evolve differently. In freezing models, since the equation of state deviates from that of a cosmological constant at early times, there is a significant difference in evolution of matter perturbations from those in the cosmological constant model.In comparison, matter perturbations in thawing models differ from the cosmological constant only at late times. We compare perturbations in a fluid model of dark energy with those in a scalar field. As compared to the $\Lambda$CDM model, large scale matter power spectrum is suppressed in fluid model as well as in a generic quintessence dark energy model.To check the efficacy of fluid description of dark energy in emulating a scalar field, we consider a potential which gives the same background evolution as a fluid with a constant equation of state. We show that for sub-Hubble scales, a fluid model effectively emulates a scalar field model. We estimate the amplitude of perturbation in dark energy at different length scales for a quintessence model with an exponential potential. It is shown that on length scales much smaller than hubble radius, perturbation in dark energy is negligible in comparison to that in in dark matter. However, on scales comparable to the hubble radius ($\lambda_{p}>1000\mathrm{Mpc}$) the perturbation in dark energy in general cannot be neglected. As compared to the $\Lambda$CDM model, large scale matter power spectrum is suppressed in a generic quintessence dark energy model. We show that on scales $\lambda_{p} < 1000\mathrm{Mpc}$, this suppression is primarily due to different background evolution compared to $\Lambda$CDM model. However, on much larger scales perturbation in dark energy can effect matter power spectrum significantly. During the last few years, exact solutions that describe black holes that are bound to a two-brane in a four dimensional anti-de Sitter bulk have been constructed. In situations wherein there is a negative cosmological constant on the brane, for large masses, these solutions are exactly the rotating BTZ black holes on the brane and, in fact, describe rotating BTZ black strings in the bulk. We evaluate the canonical entropy of a free and massless scalar field (at the Hawking temperature) around the rotating BTZ black string using the brick wall model. We study the observational constraints of CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies on models of dark energy, with special focus on models with variation in properties of dark energy with time. We demonstrate that the key constraint from CMB observations arises from the location of acoustic peaks. An additional constraint arises from the limits on Omega_nr from the relative amplitudes of acoustic peaks. Further, we show that the distance to the last scattering surface is not how the CMB observations constrain the combination of parameters for models of dark energy. We also use constraints from Supernova observations and show that unlike the Gold and Silver samples, the SNLS sample prefers a region of parameter space that has a significant overlap with the region preferred by the CMB observations. This is a verification of a conjecture made by us in an earlier work. We discuss combined constraints from WMAP5 and SNLS observations. We find that models with w ~ -1 are preferred for models with a constant equation of state parameters. In case of models with a time varying dark energy, we show that constraints on evolution of dark energy density are almost independent of the type of variation assumed for the equation of state parameter. This makes it easy to get approximate constraints from CMB observations on arbitrary models of dark energy. The dark energy component of the universe is often interpreted either in terms of a cosmological constant or as a scalar field. A generic feature of the scalar field models is that the equation of state parameter w= P/rho for the dark energy need not satisfy w=-1 and, in general, it can be a function of time. Using the Markov chain Monte Carlo method we perform a critical analysis of the cosmological parameter space, allowing for a varying w. We use constraints on w(z) from the observations of high redshift supernovae (SN), the WMAP observations of CMB anisotropies and abundance of rich clusters of galaxies. For models with a constant w, the LCDM model is allowed with a probability of about 6% by the SN observations while it is allowed with a probability of 98.9% by WMAP observations. The LCDM model is allowed even within the context of models with variable w: WMAP observations allow it with a probability of 99.1% whereas SN data allows it with 23% probability. The SN data, on its own, favors phantom like equation of state (w<-1) and high values for Omega_NR. It does not distinguish between constant w (with w<-1) models and those with varying w(z) in a statistically significant manner. The SN data allows a very wide range for variation of dark energy density, e.g., a variation by factor ten in the dark energy density between z=0 and z=1 is allowed at 95% confidence level. WMAP observations provide a better constraint and the corresponding allowed variation is less than a factor of three. Allowing for variation in w has an impact on the values for other cosmological parameters in that the allowed range often becomes larger. The conceptual difficulties associated with a cosmological constant have led to the investigation of alternative models in which the equation of state parameter, $w=p/\rho$, of the dark energy evolves with time. We show that combining the supernova type Ia observations {\it with the constraints from WMAP observations} restricts large variation of $\rho(z)$ at low redshifts. The combination of these two observational constraints is stronger than either one. We study some cosmological consequences of the five dimensional, two brane Randall-Sundrum scenario. We integrate over the extra dimensions and in four dimensions the action reduces to that of scalar tensor gravity. The radius of the compact extra dimension is taken to be time dependent.It is shown that the radius of the extra dimension rapidly approaches a constant nonzero separation of branes. A radion dominated universe cannot undergo accelerated expansion in the absence of a potential.It is shown that a simple quadratic potential with minimum at zero leads to constant nonzero separation of branes in a similar level but now accelerated expansion is possible. After stabilization the quadratic potential contributes an effective cosmological constant term.We show that with a suitable tuning of parameters the requirements for solving the hierarchy problem and getting an effective dark energy can be satisfied simultaneously., Comment: Revtex4, 5 pages, 2 postscript figures

We study cosmological effects of homogeneous tachyon field as dark energy. We concentrate on two different scalar field potentials, the inverse square potential and the exponential potential. These models have a unique feature that the matter density parameter and the density parameter for tachyons remain comparable for a large range in redshift. It is shown that there exists a range of parameters for which the universe undergoes an accelerated expansion and the evolution is consistent with structure formation requirements. For a viable model we require fine tuning of parameters comparable to that in LCDM or in quintessence models. We present a detailed study of cosmological effects of homogeneous tachyon matter coexisting with non-relativistic matter and radiation, concentrating on the inverse square potential and the exponential potential for the tachyonic scalar field. A distinguishing feature of these models (compared to other cosmological models) is that the matter density parameter and the density parameter for tachyons remain comparable even in the matter dominated phase. For the exponential potential, the solutions have an accelerating phase, followed by a phase with a(t) ~ t^{2/3} as t goes to infinity. This eliminates the future event horizon present in LCDM models and is an attractive feature from the string theory perspective. A comparison with supernova Ia data shows that for both the potentials there exists a range of models in which the universe undergoes an accelerated expansion at low redshifts and are also consistent with requirements of structure formation. The motion of a string in curved spacetime is discussed in detail. The basic formalism for string motion in Minkowski spacetime and in curved spacetime is presented. The description applies to cosmic strings as well as to fundamental strings. Major ansatze for solving the string equations of motion are reviewed. In particular, the ``null string ansatz'', which is relevant to strings in strong gravitational fields, is emphasised. The formalism is applied to the motion of strings in 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein black hole backgrounds with electric and magnetic charge. Such background spacetimes have been of interest lately, particularly from the point of view of fundamental string theory. This brief report presents analytical solutions to the equations of motion of a null string. The background spacetime is a magnetically charged Kaluza-Klein black hole. The string coordinates are expanded with the world-sheet velocity of light as an expansion parameter. It is shown that the zeroth order solutions can be expressed in terms of elementary functions in an appropriate large distance approximation. The dynamics of a string near a Kaluza-Klein black hole are studied. Solutions to the classical string equations of motion are obtained using the world sheet velocity of light as an expansion parameter. The electrically and magnetically charged cases are considered separately. Solutions for string coordinates are obtained in terms of the world-sheet coordinate $\tau$.
