L’importance de la nomination en pays igbo avait très tôt attiré l’attention des missionnaires. Nous poursuivrons ici cet intérêt pour les noms théophores, pour étudier la relation qu’ils révèlent entre humains et divinités et son évolution. La culture igbo distingue sept types de noms personnels, selon le contexte dans lequel ils sont donnés. Ces noms, qui se sont multipliés depuis quelques années au même rythme que les distinctions honorifiques, sont en constante évolution et caractérisés par une importante créativité. L’onomastique igbo, née dans les années 1970 à l’époque où le Nigeria redécouvrait ses cultures et où de nombreux intellectuels donnaient l’exemple en abandonnant leurs prénoms anglais pour des prénoms igbo, a tout d’abord porté son attention sur les noms de baptême pour répondre à une forte attente. Elle a ensuite attiré l’attention sur le discours véhiculé par les noms igbo dans leur ensemble et permis la publication de plusieurs ouvrages. Cet article examine, à partir d’un vaste corpus de noms anciens et actuels, le rôle et l’évolution de la nomination en igbo, sa relation aux progrès d’un christianisme engagé dans la région, et le sens à donner à l’inclusion du nom de Dieu, Chukwu, dans les noms.\ud \ud The importance of nomination in Igbo culture, which attracted the attention of early missionaries, is the focus of this article which considers the relationship established by personal names between people and the supernatural, and its evolution. Igbos distinguish seven types of personal names, given at different moments of a person’s life. These names, whose number has grown exponentially within the last thirty years, in line with the development of chieftaincy titles, are characterised both by a rapid evolution and a remarkable creativity. Igbo onomastics, born in the 1970s at a time when Nigeria rediscovered its roots, with a number of scholars dropping their English names for their Igbo names, first drew public attention to the religious meaning of Igbo names, to answer a pressing need in a region characterised by a massive church attendance. Studies later extended to other aspects of Igbo nomination and resulted in the publication of several books. The present article, based on a vast corpus of personal names, examines the role and evolution of nomination in Igbo culture, its relation to the progress of an active Christian body in the region and the reasons behind the constant mention of God, Chukwu, in Igbo names.
