K rzlich berichteten Peterson, Zaworotko und Mitarbeiter (nachfolgend als PZ bezeichnet) ber ein zweites Polymorph von Aspirin (o-Acetylsalicyls"ure, Form II). Diese neue Form wurde durch Kristallisation von Aspirin in Gegenwart entweder von Levetiracetam oder von Acetamid aus Acetonitril erhalten und anschliesend durch eine Einkristallr.ntgenstrukturanalyse charakterisiert. Die Form II wurde „weiterhin durch den Schmelzpunkt, IR-Spektroskopie, Differentialthermoanalyse und HPLC charakterisiert“. Festgestellt wurde auserdem, dass „es eindeutige Unterschiede zwischen den Zellparametern“ der Formen I und II gibt und dass auch die „molekulare Geometrie von Aspirin-Molek,len in Form II sich leicht in Bezug auf den Torsionswinkel unterscheidet, der durch die Carbons0ureund Acetylgruppen definiert ist, obwohl die zentrosymmetrischen Carbons0uredimere erhalten bleiben“. Die Kristallpackung des neuen, von PZ vorgeschlagenen Polymorphs unterscheidet sich von derjenigen der Form I insbesondere darin, dass in Form II „die Methylgruppen catemere C-H···O-Wasserstoffbr,cken mit dem Carbonyl-Sauerstoff der Acetylgruppe bilden, versus zentrosymmetrischen Dimeren in der Form I“. Es werden st"ndig neue Polymorphe "lterer Verbindungen entdeckt. Besonders wegen der patentrechtlichen Situation besteht ein groses Interesse der pharmazeutischen Industrie an diesem Ph"nomen sowie daran, neue Polymorphe und Pseudopolymorphe oder Solvate von pharmazeutischen Wirkstoffen (APIs) zu untersuchen. Deshalb wollen wir hier klarstellen, dass die Form II von Aspirin, wie sie von PZ beschrieben wurde, einfach aus experimentellen Beugungsdaten von Einkristallen der wohlbekannten Form I mit der gleichen Genauigkeit abgeleitet werden kann. W"hrend wir die Gr nde f r dieses ungew.hnliche Verhalten noch weiter untersuchen, erachten wir die ersten Resultate als wichtig genug, sie in einer vorl"ufigen Publikation mitzuteilen, nicht zuletzt wegen der besonderen patentrechtlichen Bedeutung der Polymorphie in der pharmazeutischen Industrie und der grosen Bedeutung der Titelverbindung. Die erste Kristallstruktur von Aspirin (Form I) wurde von Wheatley beschrieben, der in seiner Ver.ffentlichung von 1964 schildert, dass „eine Anzahl von [vergeblichen] Experimenten“ vor jener Arbeit durchgef hrt wurde. Die Raumgruppe ist P21/c und der konventionelle R-Wert war 0.108. Grose R-Werte wie dieser waren zu jenen Zeiten nicht ungew.hnlich. 1984 berichteten Kim et al. ber dieselbe Struktur mit einem R-Wert von 0.046, und 2002 f hrte Wilson eine Neubestimmung derselben Kristallstruktur mit Neutronenbeugung bei sieben Temperaturen zwischen 20 und 300 K durch; die R-Werte (basierend auf F) dieser Bestimmungen liegen im Bereich von 0.080 bis 0.090. Wir waren der Auffassung, dass diese R-Werte definitiv zu hoch liegen und bestimmten deshalb die Kristallstruktur neu. Zu diesem Zweck w"hlten wir einen wohlgeformten Kristall aus einer kommerziellen Probe (Merck Art. 85, DAB 7). Die Elementarzelle [a= 11.2776(2), b= 6.5517(1), c= 11.2741(2) D, b= 95.837(1)8, V= 828.70(2) D] entspricht derjenigen, die von Wheatley, Kim und Wilson beschrieben wurde. Die Strukturverfeinerung, basierend auf Daten bis 2q= 568 (MoKa-Strahlung) ist akzeptabel (R1[I>2s(I)]= 0.0330); dies ist die bislang beste Strukturbestimmung von Aspirin der Form I, weshalb wir sie hier als Referenz verwenden. Zu Beginn fielen uns bei der PZ-Struktur einige Merkw rdigkeiten auf: 1) Die Daten wurden bei 2q= 408 (MoKa) abgeschnitten; 2) die R-Werte sind inakzeptabel gros (R1[I>2s(I)]= 0.162, wR2(alle Daten)= 0.308; 3) s"mtliche Atome wurden isotrop verfeinert, was impliziert, dass eine anisotrope Verfeinerung nicht m.glich war; 4) einige der verfeinerten Uiso-Werte sind null oder ungew.hnlich nahe bei null. Am wichtigsten ist jedoch, dass die Elementarzelle [a= 12.095(7), b= 6.491(4), c= 11.323(6) D, b= 111.509(9)8, V= 827.1(8) D] durch eine Transformation erzeugt werden kann, wenn man auf die von uns erhaltene Zelle f r die Form I die geometrische Transformation [1 0 =2 0 1 0 0 0 1] anwendet [a= 12.084, b= 6.552, c= 11.274 D, b= 111.818, V= 828.7 D]. Umgekehrt kann unsere Elementarzelle f r Form I dadurch erhalten werden, dass man die Transformationsmatrix auf die PZ-Zelle anwendet. Dies ist schematisch in Abbildung 1 dargestellt. The dilution of tert-butylamine (tBA) with water and subsequent cooling leads to a large series of different crystalline hydrates by an in situ IR laser melting-zone procedure. The crystal structures were determined for tBA⋅n H2 O, with n=0, 1/4, 1, 7 1/4, 7 3/4, 9 3/4, 11, and 17. For the two lower hydrates (n= 1/4, 1), one- and two-dimensional hydrogen-bonded networks are formed, respectively. The higher hydrates (n1) exhibit a clathrate-like three-dimensional water framework with the tBA molecules as part of, or sitting inside, the cages. In all cases, tBA is hydrogen-bonded to the H2 O framework. In the intermediate range (1n7 1/4), crystallization is hindered, and no crystalline phases could be observed. The crystal structures that are achieved from the dilution of tBA with water are considered to be frozen stages of hydration, describing the genesis of such clathrate-like structures, finally ending at ice as an example of an infinitely diluted hydrate.

A stereoselective and synthetically useful rearrangement reaction of 5α,8α-bridged 9,11α-epoxy steroids induced by boron trifluoride−diethyl ether is presented, in the preparation of a new class of 5α,9α-bridged 11α-hydroxy steroid derivatives in high yields. The most stable is not necessarily the most easy to obtain! Two new stable crystal forms of the 120 year old compound sym-trinitrobenzene are reported. These elusive forms have been obtained by the use of an additive, trisindane, that can act as a mimic in the crystallization experiment.

γ-Hydroquinone (1) and its tetrafluoro, tetrachloro and tetrabromo derivatives (2), (3) and (4) adopt crystal structures that have an almost invariant system of O—H...O hydrogen bonds. However, within this O—H...O framework, the four structures display variations that are characteristic of the C—H, C—F, C—Cl and C—Br groups. In the parent compound (1) aromatic rings are packed with a herringbone geometry, whilst in the halogenated derivatives (3) and (4), polarization-type halogen...halogen contacts are optimized. The fluoro derivative (2) is exceptional in that neither of the above possibilities is adopted, even though the O—H...O scaffolding does not per se prohibit either of them geometrically.

In the crystal structure of the title compd., C25H20O.C8H15OP, the components are linked through O-H...O and C-H...O H bonds. The Ph rings of OPPh3 are close packed, while those of 4-(triphenylmethyl)phenol are involved in sextuple embrace type of packing. Crystallog. data are given.

The crystal structure of the title compound, alternatively called 1,2,3-triiodo-5-(triphenylmethyl)benzene, C 25 H 17 I 3 , is analysed in terms of I...I and I...π interactions and the herring-bone T motif between phenyl groups. There are two molecules in the asymmetric unit, denoted A and B. Inversion-related A molecules are connected via an I...π interaction (3.641 A, to a C-C bond mid-point) to form an I...π dimer, and these dimers are connected through symmetry-independent B molecules via I...I [3.5571 (15) A] and I...π (3.561 A, to a C-C bond mid-point) interactions.

The structure and conformation of title compd. I, prepd. from polyalkyne II in 2 steps, was detd.

The crystal structures of small annelated benzene derivs., benzocyclopropene and benzocyclobutene derivs., were detd. Alternating bond length were found to be insignificant (

In situ cryocrystallization has been employed to grow single crystals of 4-methoxybenzaldehyde (anisaldehyde), C(8)H(8)O(2), 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (salicylaldehyde), C(7)H(6)O(2), and (2E)-3-phenylprop-2-enal (cinnamaldehyde), C(9)H(8)O, all of which are liquids at room temperature. Several weak C-H···O interactions of the types C(aryl)-H···O, C(formyl)-H···O and Csp(3)-H···O are present in these related crystal structures.

Cyclopropylamines are successfully synthesized by the reaction of different substituted carboxamides with Grignard reagents in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of Me-Ti(O-iPr)3.

The molecular structure of ethyl chlorothioformate, ClC(O)SCH2CH3, has been investigated in the solid phase by X-ray diffraction analysis at low temperature using a miniature zone-melting procedure and IR laser radiation. The crystalline solid consists exclusively of molecules with the synperiplanar conformation with respect to the C=O double bond and the S—C single bond, and gauche orientation of the ethyl group (syn-gauche). These results coincide with previous studies devoted to gas-phase conformational properties. The conformational preference for the ClC(O)SY (Y = Cl, CF3, CH3 and CH2CH3) series of molecules was rationalized using the natural bond orbital (NBO) scheme. It was found that both resonance (mesomeric) and anomeric (hyperconjugation) intermolecular charge-transfer interactions are important for describing the syn ↔ anti equilibrium, also illustrating the effect of electronegativity of the substituent in the conformation preference of the ClC(O)S— moiety. On the basis of the atoms in molecules (AIM) theory, intermolecular interactions have been characterized in the B3LYP/6-31G** periodic boundary electron density.

A series of variously substituted 1,3,2-diazaborolidines have been prepared by different methods. Unsaturated 2,3-dihydro-1H-1,3,2-diazaboroles are synthesized by catalytic dehydrogenation in either liquid or gaseous. Diazaboroles can act as 6-π-electron donors in Cr(CO) 3 complexes

Using a miniature zone melting device with focused IR light it was possible to grow crystals of bis(dimethylamino)methylborane (I) and bis(monomethylamino)methylborane (II) at temps. of 182 K and 177 K, resp. The crystal structure and the X-X difference electron d. have been detd. at temps. of 120 K (I) and 115 K (II). It is shown that the variation of torsion angles at small angles has more influence on bond lengths than the same or a greater variation at large angles and that it is necessary to pay more attention to the torsion angles (C-B-N-C) rather than to the interplanar angles (plane N,B,N-plane N,C,C).
