ABSTRACT The main objective of the research is to reveal the scenario of the legal treatment given to abortion in Brazil in the light of women’s right to self-determination. The work will be approached from the hypothetical-deductive and dialectical methodologies, through the comparative, historical, statistical and monographic techniques, through bibliographic, documentary methods, having as a source of primary analysis a case study on the most recent decisions made by Supreme Federal Court regarding the issue of termination of pregnancy. As a result, the present work identified a certain advance in the debate about women’s rights in the social and legal scenarios, although these were not sufficient to support the right to terminate a woman’s pregnancy in the first trimester of pregnancy in a definitive way. The work concludes that the Brazilian socio-juridical panorama is still permeated by conservative views, which need to be properly fought in order for there to be an effective female conquest to expand the chances of legal abortion.

Objectives Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious and contagious disease that has been very influential in human history and presents high rates of mortality. The objective of this study was to investigate the association of VDR, IL10, and SLC11A1 gene polymorphisms with susceptibility to the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Methods A total of 135 patients with confirmed TB and 141 healthy individuals were included in the analysis. Blood samples were collected for DNA extraction. Genotyping of the polymorphisms in the VDR and IL10 genes was performed by real-time PCR, and genotyping of the polymorphisms in the SLC11A1 gene by conventional PCR, followed by visualization in polyacrylamide gel. The genomic ancestry was obtained using an autosomal panel with 48 insertion/deletion ancestry-informative markers. Results Polymorphisms TaqI (TT, p = 0.004), FokI (CC and CC + CT, p = 0.012 and p = 0.003, respectively), and BsmI (GG, p = 0.008) in the VDR gene, as well as A-592C (GC + AG, p = 0.001) in the IL10 gene, were significantly associated with susceptibility to TB In addition, high production of VDR combined with low production of IL10 showed protection for the TB group (p = 0.035). Conclusions The VDR polymorphisms may confer an increased risk and the IL10 haplotype may be a protection factor for the presence of M. tuberculosis infection in the Brazilian population.

General Medicine - Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the isolated and joint use of Azospirillum brasilense inoculation and the application of thiamine, on seed or leaf, on the development of millet in two cycles. A randomized complete block design was used in five replicates. The treatments were composed of the isolated or combined inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense and the application of thiamine, on seed (10 ml kg-1) or leaf spray (10 ppm). The relative levels of chlorophyll a, b and total, plant height, number of shoots, fresh and dry mass production and dry matter index of plants were evaluated. In the first cycle, treatments were only effective for the relative chlorophyll contents, and in general, the treatment with isolated inoculation of A. brasilense stood out, differing significantly from the treatment with thiamin applied on seed. In the second cycle, there was significant effect of the treatments on the variables of plant height and number of shoots, in which a maximum height of 165 cm and production of 140 shoots m-2 with application of thiamin on seed and with the use of A. brasilense and thiamine applied on the leaf, respectively. Thus, it was concluded that inoculation with A. brasilense increases the relative chlorophyll content in millet during the first cycle. The joint use of inoculation with A. brasilense and the application of thiamine can be used as a strategy to increase the number of shoots.

The growing idea that natural products are better for consumption is creating behaviors that can lead to food safety problems and an increase of healthcare costs. One of the trending products is raw milk, which in some countries is sold by vending machines outside dairy farms. Campylobacteriosis is the most common gastrointestinal infection in humans in the European Union since 2005. Several outbreaks have been associated with the consumption of raw milk contaminated with Campylobacter spp. In the present study, the occurrence and seasonality of Campylobacter spp. in raw cow's milk were determined. Other samples from the dairy farm environment were also analyzed to understand the possible routes of contamination. The study was conducted from November 2020 to September 2021 in randomly selected dairy farms located in northern Portugal. One liter of milk was collected from bulk cooling tanks transported to the laboratory and analyzed within 24h. Campylobacter spp. detection and identification were performed using real-time PCR methodology and confirmation followed ISO standards. From 100 dairy farms evaluated, the occurrence of Campylobacter spp. was estimated at 4.0% in raw cow's milk samples. In the samples from the environment of the farms, only contaminated fecal samples were found, corresponding to an occurrence of 4.2%. Positivity was observed in summer months. The results of this study indicate the potential risk of campylobacteriosis after the consumption of raw milk. Consumers who seek raw milk for health reasons should be aware of the risk, especially if they belong to vulnerable groups. Moreover, it raises the question of how climate change will impact food safety, suggesting that routine surveillance for zoonotic pathogens should be implemented in dairy farms., Authors want to thank to CECA-ICETA UIDB/00211/2020; CITAB UIDB/AGR/04033/2020; CEB UIDB/04469/2020; LEPABE UIDB/00511/2020 for their support., info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

The System of Price Record (SRP) has been widely used by the public organisations when planning their procurement. However, one of the greatest challenges in its usage is to avoid an overestimation of the quantity registered, that is, adequate them to the real demands of the public organisation. In order to make the SRP demands closer to reality, the IFTM promoted an innovation in its process of purchase planning in 2013, making it participative. This research aimed to assess the implemented innovation by analysing the outcomes of the implementation of the price register demands, in order to verify is these registers reflected the real demand. In order to do this, a survey of all the participatory planning items was carried out in the period from 2013 to 2016, comparing the recorded amounts with those actually acquired using the index GARP - approximation degree between the real and the planned. The data were submitted by two samples test of Kolmogorov-Smirnov and the GARP scale. It was verified that the participative planning did not reach the aim of bringing closer the SRP demands to the real necessities of the public organisation. As a proposal for improvement, it was suggested: adoption of an index from the previous period as a subsidey to the quantity planning; conciliation of the planned amounts with the budget; qualification of the involved professionals; monitoring and control of activities and finally, review of the of SRP usage policy.

IntroductionThe current COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for populational adherence to measures for the prevention and control of respiratory infectious diseases. However, their effectiveness depends on the population’s preventive behaviour, which may be divergent from public policies. Therefore, this study aims to summarise and evaluate the evidence on barriers and facilitators to populational adherence to prevention and control measures in COVID-19 and other respiratory infectious diseases. Methods and analysisWe will search on MEDLINE, Embase and PsycINFO for studies focusing on adults receiving protective behaviour recommendations to combat COVID-19 and other respiratory infectious diseases. The searches will be carried out from database’s inception to the present. We will include studies that use qualitative methods in their data collection and analysis and studies that use mixed methods if they include any qualitative methods of analysis. Studies published in English, Portuguese and Spanish will be included. Two review authors will independently screen the studies for inclusion and extract data. We will assess the quality of the included studies using the Critical Skills Appraisal Programme tool. For the assessment of the confidence in the synthesised findings, we will use the GRADE-Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research. Data analysis will be conducted using the best-fit framework approach based on adapted dimensions from the Health Belief Model and the Behaviour Change Wheel.Ethics and disseminationThis study will be conducted on published evidence, and thus, no ethical approval is required. The findings of this rapid qualitative evidence synthesis will be disseminated to academic audiences, health policy-makers and the general population. We will publish the results in peer-reviewed journals, present our findings in conferences, and disseminate results via social media. We also aim to present the research findings in plain language and disseminate the knowledge to the general population to increase public interest.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42020205750.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects on plant development, productivity and fruit quality from combinations of planting methods, nitrogen fertilizer applications and inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense in Cantaloupe melons cultivated in a protected environment. A randomized blocks design was adopted with a 2x2x2 factorial scheme with five replications. The treatments consisted of combinations of planting methods (pre-established seedlings or direct field sowing), inoculation with A. brasilense (with or without) and nitrogen fertilization (with and without). During the vegetative phase, the height, stem diameter, number and length of plant internodes and relative chlorophyll content were evaluated. Fifty-five days after planting, the leaf nitrogen content, leaf area and dry mass were measured. At harvest, the number of days between planting and harvesting was calculated, and the fresh weight, circumference, length, bark and pulp thickness and fruit productivity were evaluated. It was verified that A. brasilense did not affect any of the evaluated characteristics. On the other hand, direct field seed sowing decreased the production time and provided good plant development. However, the size and productivity of the fruits were higher when pre-established seedlings were used, with or without inoculation with A. brasilense, fertilized with nitrogen. It was concluded that the combinations of the different sowing methods, nitrogen fertilization and inoculation with A. brasilense affected the development and characteristics of the Cantaloupe melon plants and fruits.

The National High School Examination (ENEM) has undergone several reformulations in recent years and, despite this, may create obstacles that compromise teacher autonomy, approach to local issues and teaching. The objective of the present study is to discuss the curricular implications of ENEM for the Environmental Science Teaching in local scale. Bibliographical and documentary data were collected and the Human and Natural Sciences tests of the exam in question were analyzed, that proved the small approach of the environmental themes. Thus, it is observed the ENEM little addresses local issues in its proposal. The school should use others pedagogical tools to better implement the teaching of Environmental Sciences, in the perspective of trying to approximate the studied contents to the student’s reality, thus uniting theory and practice.

Background At a time when the world’s population is aging, one of the most important challenges for the healthcare field is to control the decline of the musculoskeletal system. This decline consists of a reduction in muscle mass and function, which is called sarcopenia and is associated with adverse health outcomes. Although there has been an increase in the number of publications on sarcopenia and its consequences, the reported prevalence varies widely, since these depend on the characteristics of the population studied, the definitions found in the literature and the cut-off points adopted. In this perspective, the heterogeneity in the classification and the different reference values has a critical impact on the epidemiology of sarcopenia, since neither the procedures, the components and the cut-off points are consistent. Objectives To develop cut-off points for the screening of sarcopenia in community-dwelling older people residents in the northeast of Brazil and compare the prevalences between the values defined by the consensus and the values of the population studied. Methods Community-dwelling older men and women living in three cities in the countryside of Rio Grande do Norte were evaluated. Cutoff points were defined for the variables used to screen for sarcopenia (handgrip strength, SMI, gait speed and SPPB) using the 20th percentile of their population distributions. Results The sample was composed of 1,290 older people (62.5% female and 37.5% male), with an average of 69.5 (± 6.05) years of age. Regarding the cutoff points, the handgrip values were defined as 25.3 kg and 16 kg for men and women, respectively. Considering the SMM adjusted according to their height, the values of 7.88 kg/m2 were adopted for men and 5.52 kg/m2 for women. When adjusting by BMI we obtained 0.73 kg/BMI for men and 0.41 kg/BMI for women. For gait speed it was defined 0.71 m/s for men and 0.63 m/s for women. In the case of SPPB, the result was the same for both genders (≤8). When applying the values found in the studied population, a variation in prevalence was observed for both men and women, depending on the cut-off points and consensus used. Conclusion The cutoff values found in our population were lower than those adopted by international consensus (EWGSOP2, IWGS and FNIH), except for HGS in woman and SMI/m2 for men. Therefore, using specific cutoff points for different populations can provide an accurate assessment of the presence of sarcopenia and better target health prevention strategies for the older people living in the community.

The licuri nut shell is a potential source of biomass for energy production. The aim of this study was the physicochemical characterization of the licuri shell, focusing on the increase of its use as a fuel. The material was collected in Caldeirão Grande-BA and the characterization included a wide range of analyses such as: moisture content, bulk density, particle size distribution, ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon, high heating value (HHV), hot water and cyclohexane/ethanol extractions, Klason lignin content, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The obtained results were: moisture content (11,1%), HHV (4652 kcal.kg-1), Klason lignin content (36,86%), volatile content (74,91%), and fixed carbon (21,19%). The results showed that the material can be considered suitable for the purpose of generating energy when compared with other types of biomasses. The ash content (3,9%) and the extractives content (46,75%) are in accordance with the values observed for the babassu nut shell, Brazilian nut shell, and coconut. Finally, by the TGA analysis, it was observed that the degradation peak occurred at 272°C with a loss of 65% of weight. With these results, the licuri nut shell has shown to be potentially promising for the energy production.

ObjectivesSelf-rated health (SRH) is a predictor of objective health measures, including mortality and morbidity. The link between resilience and SRH among the elderly is unclear. We aim to examine whether resilience aligns with SRH and, secondarily, whether resilience can override the negative health consequences of adverse childhood experiences (ACE).Design and settingWe use 2012, 2014 and 2016 data from the International Mobility in Aging Study, a longitudinal cohort study that collects survey and biophysical data from Albania, Brazil, Colombia and Canada. The main independent variables were resilience and ACE (social and economic).ParticipantsCommunity-dwelling 65–74 year olds (in 2012) were recruited through primary care registers. The sample size of the study was 1506.Primary outcomeThe outcome measure was SRH.ResultsWe found that sex, site, economic ACE, current income sufficiency, current depressive symptoms, current physical function and current resilience were associated with current SRH. In regression analyses, we showed that the association between ACE and SRH disappeared once factors such as sex, site, income, depression, physical health and resilience were considered.ConclusionsThe association between resilience and health poses a compelling argument for building resilience throughout life.

Why was the cohort set up? Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are characterized by much diversity in terms of socio-economic status, ecology, environment, access to health care,1,2 as well as the frequency of risk factors for and prevalence or incidence of non-communicable diseases;3–7 importantly, these differences are observed both between and within countries in LAC.8,9 LAC countries share a large burden of non-communicable (e.g. diabetes and hypertension) and cardiovascular (e.g. ischaemic heart disease) diseases, with these conditions standing as the leading causes of morbidity, disability and mortality in most of LAC.10–12 These epidemiological estimates—e.g. morbidity—cannot inform about risk factors or risk prediction, which are relevant to identify prevention avenues. Cohort studies, on the other hand, could provide this evidence. Pooled analysis, using data from multiple cohort studies, have additional strengths such as increased statistical power and decreased statistical uncertainty.13 LAC cohort studies have been under-represented,14 or not included at all,15–17 in international efforts aimed at pooling data from multiple cohort studies. We therefore set out to pool data from LAC cohorts to address research questions that individual cohort studies would not be able to answer. Drawing from previous successful regional enterprises (e.g. Asia Pacific Cohort Studies Collaboration),18,19 we established the Cohorts Consortium of Latin America and the Caribbean (CC-LAC). The main aim of the CC-LAC is to start a collaborative cohort data pooling in LAC to examine the association between cardio-metabolic risk factors (e.g. blood pressure, glucose and lipids) and non-fatal and fatal cardiovascular outcomes (e.g. stroke or myocardial infarction). In so doing, we aim to provide regional risk estimates to inform disease burden metrics, as well as other ambitious projects including a cardiovascular risk score to strengthen cardiovascular prevention in LAC. Initial funding has been provided by a fellowship from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Global Health Research at Imperial College London (Strategic Award, Wellcome Trust–Imperial College Centre for Global Health Research, 100693/Z/12/Z). Additional funding is being provided by an International Training Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust (214185/Z/18/Z). At the time of writing, the daily operations and pooled database are hosted at Imperial College London, though a mid-term goal is to transfer this expertise and operations to LAC. The collaboration relies fundamentally on a strong regional network of health researchers and practitioners

Material and Methods. Biometric characteristics, productivity, crude protein content were evaluated, and the total operational cost structure was used to determine the economic indexes of a productive cycle. Results. It was observed that treatments with isolated or combined application of A. brasilense and thiamine did not affect the plant height, stem diameter, fresh and dry mass productivity and crude protein contents of sweet maize plants. However, the inoculation with A. brasilense increased in 24.36%, 24.36%, 53.15% and 10.47%, the productivity of fresh matter, gross revenue, operating profit and the profitability index, respectively, compared to the control treatment. Even with different responses, all treatments resulted in positive profitability indices, indicating the appropriate economic return with this activity. Conclusions. It was concluded that A. brasilense and thiamine applied as seed treatment do not significantly affect sweet maize plants development and composition; treatments influenced the economical indexes, and the isolated application of A. brasilense resulted in higher earnings; thiamine isolated application as seed treatment can be used as an alternative for improvement of economical gains.

This study assessed whether telomere length is related to chronic conditions, cardiovascular risk factors, and inflammation in women aged 65 to 74 from Northeast Brazil. Participants were selected from two sources, a representative sample of the International Mobility in Aging Study (n = 57) and a convenience sample (n = 49) recruited at senior centers. Leukocyte telomere length was measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction from blood samples in 83 women. Natural log-transformed telomere/single copy gene ratio was used as the dependent variable in the analysis. Blood analyses included inflammatory markers (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and interleukin-6), total, low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin. Self-rated health, chronic conditions, cardiovascular risk factors and inflammatory markers were not associated with telomere length. No significant independent association was found between telomere length and anthropometric measures or blood markers, even after adjusting for age, education and adverse childhood events among these older women in Northeast Brazil. Our results did not confirm the hypothesis that chronic conditions, cardiovascular risk factors or inflammation are associated with shorter telomere length in these women who have exceptional survival relative to the life expectancy of their birth cohort.

Abstract: The traditional western family model, wich for centuries has been the only valid form of affective coexistence in society, has its conceptions of universal moral legitimacy opposed by postmodern presuppositions. The philosophical-social transformations that took place in contemporary western society highlight the challenge to ancient supposedly universal dogmas, such as the compulsory monogamous form of loving coexistence. In this context, new models of family organization and affectivity emerge, all of them valid and legitimate according to a pluralistic and intercultural order that values diversity and difference. In the meantime, polyamor relations gain increasing prominence, emerging as sociocultural practices that challenge the historical supremacy of the monogamous family entity in the West.

Minimal change disease (MCD) is usually steroid sensitive, although in case of steroid dependent and multiple relapses we can struggle with different immunosuppressive agents, sometimes with no response. Rituximab has been emerging as an alternative therapeutic option. We describe a case of a young patient with MCD that had frequent relapses and steroid dependency, with no response to several immunosuppressive agents during 15 years of disease. He was kept under high-dose steroids and ciclosporin. He started treatment with rituximab (two administrations of 1 g 2 weeks apart, repeating after 6 months). The steroids dose was gradually reduced and the ciclosporin was stopped. During the entire 2 years follow-up period, he remained in remission and had no adverse events. This remarkable outcome reinforces the option of using rituximab in difficult cases, allowing the reduction of steroid burden and its adverse effects, which is of extreme importance, especially in young patients.

We present a case of a 51-year-old man who went to the emergency department after an almost-drowning episode, presenting with muscular weakness, myalgia and dark urine. Laboratory data showed a severe rhabdomyolysis (creatine kinase 497 510 U/L). Despite aggressive fluid therapy, an oliguric acute kidney injury was established with temporary need of haemodialysis. The patient had a longtime history of exercise intolerance and family history of a metabolic myopathy, namely a sister with McArdle’s disease. The genetic test was positive. McArdle’s disease is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the muscle glycogen phosphorylase gene that encodes the myophosphorylase. The main symptom consists in exercise intolerance and the most severe complication is rhabdomyolysis with acute renal failure. Metabolic myopathies, such as McArdle’s disease, should be considered in patients with acute renal failure due to unexplained severe rhabdomyolysis, especially if there are chronic complaints of exercise intolerance and positive family history.

Historia. Tempo.
