Abstract

The reactions of ketones and N-substituted thioureas, in the presence of HCl (or HBr) and DMSO afford mixtures of the title compounds which are easily separated on a silica gel column. This method avoids the classical use of α-haloketones. The mechanism of these reactions involves the enolization of ketones and the activation of thiourea sulfur, probably by oxygen transfer from DMSO.

Abstract

The condensation reaction of thiobenzamide, (as well as thionicotinamide and isothionicotinamide) in the presence of dimethyl sulfoxide and of an acid, affords 3,5-diphenyl-1,2,4-thiadiazole. Under the same experimental conditions, N-substituted thioureas are also condensed to 1,2,4-thiadiazole derivatives; their structure is ascertained by spectroscopic properties and by X-ray diffraction. Some information on the mechanism of thiadiazoles formation from both starting classes of compounds, thiobenzamides and N-substituted thiourea, is collected and discussed.

Abstract

Glass matrix composites have been obtained by mixing and sintering “negative cost” materials coming from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) and from one aluminium foundry. The bottom ashes from two MSWIs were used to obtain the glass matrix and the solid wastes from an aluminium alloy industry were employed as a second phase. The bottom ashes were vitrified by heating at 1400°C without any additive. The vitrification process reduces the bottom ash initial volume by about 60%. The obtained glass has a Young modulus of 96 GPa and a Vickers hardness of 6 GPa. The composites were prepared in air by a low temperature pressure-less viscous phase sintering process (740–830°C) and were morphologically and mechanically characterised. The composites showed a bending strength up to 50 MPa at room temperature and could be proposed for applications in the field of tiles.

Abstract

Municipal (bottom ash and glass cullet coming from the municipal solid waste incineration and a community glass recycling program, respectively) and industrial (steel fly ash) wastes are particularly suitable to be subjected to a vitrification/devitrification process, leading to the production of alkaline and alkaline-earth silicate differently colored glasses with good chemical properties, capable to be transformed into surface nucleated basaltic glass-ceramics. These materials were investigated by means of differential thermal analysis, durability and release tests, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract

A violet, air-stable, crystalline compound of empirical formula [Cu(Ts-β-ala) 2 (pipd) 2 ] (Ts=4- toluene sulfonyl group, hereafter abbreviated as tosyl group, Ts-β-ala= N -tosyl-β-alaninate ion, pipd = piperidine) was synthesized and characterized by means of structural and spectroscopic measurements. The crystal structure of the compound was determined from three-dimensional diffractometric data. The crystals are triclinic, space group P 1 , a = 9.305(1), b = 9.637(2), c = 12.727(2) A, α = 61.50(2), β = 63.26(1), γ = 71.68(1)°, Z = 1. The structure was solved by the heavy atom method and refined through least-squares calculations to R = 0.032 for 2911 observed reflections. The copper atom lies on the symmetry center coordinating two piperidine and two carboxylic oxygens of N -tosyl-β-alanine in a square-planar arrangement. The second carboxylic oxygen is not involved in metal coordination. Electronic data are also discussed in comparison with those of other ternary Cu(II) carboxylate amine complexes.
