Hyperpneumatization of the temporal bone (HPTB) is a rare finding, and its clinical impact is poorly described in literature. We report the case of a 34-year-old woman with no previous otologic condition, complaining of paroxysmal vertigo and right pulsatile tinnitus shortly after a first scuba diving session. Clinical neurotologic assessment found a right vestibular impairment. Cranial tomodensitometry showed a bilateral hyperpneumatization of the petrosal air cell system. Brain magnetic resonance imaging to rule out any retrocochlear pathology was normal, although the cochleo-vestibular nerve (CVN) appeared to be over lengthened in a narrowed internal auditory canal (IAC), especially on the right-hand side. Pain was alleviated by administration of a low-dose anti-epileptic drug. The clinical, neurological, and radiological findings evoked a right vestibulopathy generated by a limited compression of the CVN; HPTB appeared to contribute to the narrowing of the IAC, especially on the right-hand side.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate petrous apex pneumatisation in children, as an understanding of petrous apex pneumatisation is useful in the diagnosis and surgical management of middle-ear disease.MethodsComputed tomography head scans from 1700 patients aged 0–16 years were assessed. Petrous apex bone and air cell volumes were calculated to determine the degree of petrous apex pneumatisation. Scans were analysed for communicating tracts between the middle ear and petrous apex.ResultsPetrous apex pneumatisation was found in 21.0 per cent of patients. Positive relationships were found between age and petrous apex pneumatisation prevalence (rs = 0.990, p < 0.001), and between age and degree of petrous apex pneumatisation (rs = 0.319, p < 0.001). Petrous apex pneumatisation prevalence did not significantly differ by sex or ethnicity. Communicating tracts were identified in 84.3 per cent of patients with petrous apex pneumatisation, most commonly anterior to the otic capsule.ConclusionIn children, the prevalence and degree of petrous apex pneumatisation increases with age, but prevalence is not affected by sex or ethnicity.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of chick pipping location on live broiler performance. A total of 1,350 hatching eggs were collected from a commercial flock of Ross 308 at 38 wk of age. Eggs were incubated with either their large end up (LEU) or small end up (SEU). After transfer on d 19, the air cell area of each fertile egg was marked with a marker pen on the egg surface with a candling light and monitored every 6 h during the hatching period to accurately determine the location of the pip hole. Chicks were classified into 3 groups: 1) egg position LEU and pipped through the air cell (LAC); 2) egg position SEU and pipped through the air cell (SAC); and 3) egg position SEU and pipped through the small end of the egg, not through the air cell (SSE). Individual BW was recorded at placement and at 7, 21, and 35 d of age. Feed consumption was also determined at 7, 21, and 35 d of age. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) was calculated on a pen basis for the same time periods. Mortality was recorded twice a day, and percent mortality was calculated throughout the study. The European production efficiency index (EPEI) was also calculated.All chicks that hatched from LEU eggs emerged from the egg at the region of the air cell; however, only 10.3% of chicks from the SEU position hatched through air cells. Pipping location greatly affected the hatch time. Chicks pipped through the air cell location hatched earlier than the chicks pipped without using air cell (P < 0.001). The initial BW at placement was higher in the LAC and SAC groups than in the SSE group (P < 0.001). This BW difference was still evident in the subsequent growing period, and the chicks that pipped the SSE exhibited a lower (P = 0.059) BW at 35 d. Additionally, the SSE group had a poorer FCR and numerically higher mortality than the other two groups at 35 d. Overall, the EPEI values in the LAC and SAC groups were higher than that in the SSE group at 35 d (P < 0.001). We concluded that broiler performance was negatively affected when the chicks pipped and hatched without using air cells.

Patients with advanced- or terminal-stage cancer and persons receiving palliative care are at high risk for pressure ulcers (PUs). Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the rate of PU development and levels of comfort of a dual-fit, air-cell mattress compared with an alternating, 2-layer overlay air-cell mattress in patients with advanced- or terminal-stage cancer receiving palliative care. Methods From January 2011 to December 2013, hospitalized patients with advanced- or terminal-stage cancer who were referred to a palliative care team, at least 20 years of age, able to communicate, experiencing pain, and did not have a PU were recruited to participate. Patients who consented were alternately placed on the intervention (dual-fit, air-cell) or control (2-layer air) mattress until hospital discharge or death. Demographic and clinical data, pain scores, performance status, Palliative Performance Scale scores, Braden Scale scores, tissue interface pressure, and comfort were assessed via interview using closed-end questions. If a PU developed, clinical characteristics were assessed using DESIGN-R. Descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U, chi-squared, and Fisher's exact tests were used to analyze the data. Results Of the 123 eligible patients, 73 were randomized and 52 completed the study (23 intervention patients, median age 63 [range 27-80] years; and 29 control group patients, median age 61.0 [range 27-82] years). Mattresses were used a median of 17 (range 4-113) days in the intervention group and a median of 32 (range 3-270) days in the control group. The incidence of PUs did not significantly differ between the 2 groups (13% in the intervention and 17.2% in the control group). Interface pressures were significantly higher in the intervention group (27.0 mm Hg vs. 24.3 mm Hg). Comfort scores at rest were significantly better in the intervention than in the control group (sinking into bed [3 vs. 14, respectively]; slipping on bed [o vs. 16, respectively]; and feel pressure of air cell [2 vs. 14, respectively]), as were scores with movement (instability during movement [4 vs. 18, respectively] and feeling of floating of the buttocks [6 vs. 21, respectively]) (P Conclusion Dual-fit, air-cell mattresses may help prevent PUs and improve comfort at rest and during activity among patients with end-stage cancer receiving palliative care. Further research regarding mattress selection protocols for this patient population is warranted.

Background: The mastoid air cells are considered to develop better in children with congenital cholesteatoma but only a few quantitative studies have examined. Aims/objectives: The present study was undertaken in order to clarify the relationships between the development of the mastoid air cells in children with congenital cholesteatoma and clinical factors. Materials and methods: Mastoid air cell development was evaluated in 53 children with congenital cholesteatoma. The sizes of the mastoid air cells were measured on computed tomography scans of the temporal bone, and clinical factors, including age, the extent of invasion, and whether it was located close to the eustachian tube were evaluated. Results: The cross-sectional area of the mastoid air cells was significantly smaller on the affected side than on the unaffected side, especially in the older patients. The cases involving invasion into the mastoid portion also had smaller mastoid cells. Whether the cholesteatoma was located close to the eustachian tube had no effect. Conclusions and significance: The mastoid air cells on the affected side were less well developed. Our findings indicate that a high age and the presence of cholesteatoma in the mastoid region might be associated with suppressed mastoid pneumatization.

A rectangular waveguide equipped with a network analyzer was used to assess the quality indices of shell egg. The scattering parameters of the eggs were acquired in the range of 0.9–1.7 GHz and they were then used to calculate microwave spectra of the samples. PLS and ANN regression methods were implemented to predict the egg quality indices and SIMCA and ANN classification methods were applied to classify the eggs based on their storage time. The best predictive models, however, obtained from ANN analysis where the yolk coefficient, air cell height, thick albumen height, Haugh unit, and albumen pH could be predicted with the residual predictive deviation (RPD) values of 3.500, 3.000, 2.411, 2.033, and 1.829, respectively. To classify the eggs according to their storage time, both SIMCA and ANN analyses resulted in the total accuracy of 100% when return loss spectra were used as the input.

The skull base attachment of the second lamella and suprabullar pneumatization are likely to be consistent landmarks if they are systematically classified. This study aimed to classify the pneumatization pattern according to the second lamella skull base attachment. A total of 202 computed tomography sides of 101 patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery were studied. Suprabullar pneumatization was defined as air cells present above the ethmoid bulla between the second and third lamellae. Its pattern was classified according to the air cell number and location as in the frontal cell classification. Type 0 suprabullar pneumatization was defined as no air cells between the ethmoid bulla and skull base; type 1, as a single suprabullar cell; and type 2, as multiple suprabullar cells above the ethmoid bulla. In type 3 pneumatization, the second lamella extended into the frontal sinus forming a frontal bullar cell. Type 2 was the most prevalent (40.1 %), followed by types 1, 3, and 0 (24.3, 23.3, and 12.4 %, respectively). The distance between the second lamella and anterior ethmoid artery was 8.93, 8.30, 8.50, and 11.25 mm in types 0, 1, 2, and 3 pneumatization, respectively. No patients had intraoperative injuries in the anterior ethmoid artery or lateral lamella. The second lamella skull base attachment and suprabullar pneumatization pattern could be systematically classified and be a consistent landmark to identify the frontal sinus opening.

A 31-year-old male presented with a history of chronic right-sided facial and mastoid tip pain with associated tinnitus and hearing loss. These symptoms were aggravated by the regular aeroplane trips he made to work as a “fly-in, fly-out” worker in regional Australia. Imaging revealed significant pneumocephalus secondary to mastoid air cell defects, which were repaired via a transmastoid approach. This is the fourth case of spontaneous otogenic pneumocephalus associated with air travel at altitude reported in the literature. This case is remarkable for the chronic nature of the symptoms, which were aggravated by the patient’s regular aeroplane travel. This has implications for occupations which require frequent flying in those patients who may be at risk.

Introduction: The environment of middle ear cavity gets regulated mostly by pneumatized mastoid air cell system (MACS). Many theories exist that details the process of pneumatization of this MACS. The nasal septal deviation (NSD) has been shown to be instrumental in influencing pneumatization of paranasal sinuses to varied degrees. The effect of NSD on the pneumatization of MACS remains questionable due to limited literature available. And so this study was done to find the relation between the side of NSD and extent of Pneumatization of MACS on that side by computerized tomographs of Paranasal sinus region. Subjects and Methods: 120 CT images of paranasal region from archives of radiology department were studied for NSD. The NSD was classified according to the nasal septal angle. The extent of pneumatization of mastoid region was studied and classified. The relation between severe NSD and extent of mastoid pneumatization was noted. Results: NSD was found to be right sided in 90% cases studied and 20, 45, 55 were seen belonging to group I, II and III NSD respectively. The mean NSA was found to be 13.5o. Mastoid region was observed to be hypo pneumatized in the side of NSD in 42 cases of group III NSD. Conclusion: The findings of the study puts forth the need for assessment of NSD and planning possible correction of NSD prior to middle ear and mastoid surgeries for successful results.

Introduction: Multislice Computed Tomography (MCT) is the main radiographic examination to evaluate mastoid air cell system. Hounsfield Unit density (HU), determined by MCT is useful to evaluate mastoid pneumatization, but HU values in different genders, right/left mastoid sides, as well as their association with age have not been studied yet. Aim: To evaluate the difference in Hounsfield density values between genders as well as between right and left sides, and also to correlate HU with age. Materials and Methods: A total of 102 skull MCT examinations that included mastoid process of temporal bone were evaluated (47 from male and 55 from female patients). The HU was measured at mastoid cavity applying exclusively axial slices in a standardized region of interest. All statistical analyses were performed at a level of significance of 5%, using IBM SPSS Statistics 17, SPSS®, Inc, Chicago, IL. Linear regression was used to determine the relationship between age and HU; Non-parametric tests were performed to evaluate differences between right and left sides, as well as between genders. Results: No statistical significant differences was observed between left and right sides HU values (p-value=0.676) nor between male and female (p-value=0.155), according to Mann-Whitney test. Age was not correlated with HU values (p-value=0.06). Conclusion: Within the limitations of the present investigation, we concluded that the Mastoid Air Cells System (MACS) HU values do not vary among male and female individuals and left-right sides. Age is advocated to be associated with the volume of mastoid pneumatization, but it may not be related to differences in HU values.

1. It has been reported that the increasing CO2 tension triggers the embryo to pip the air cell and emerge from the egg. However, the mechanism by which higher CO2 concentrations during the last few days of incubation affect chick physiology and the hatching process is unclear. This study investigated the effect of CO2 concentrations up to 1% during pipping, on the onset and length of the hatch window (HW) and chick quality. 2. Four batches of Ross 308 broiler eggs (600 eggs per batch) were incubated in two small-scale custom-built incubators (Petersime NV). During the final 3 d of incubation, control eggs were exposed to a lower CO2 concentration (0.3%), while the test eggs experienced a higher CO2 concentration programme (peak of 1%). 3. There were no significant differences in blood values, organ weight and body weight. There was also no difference in hatchability between control and test groups. However, a small increase in the chick weight and the percentage of first class chicks was found in the test groups. Furthermore, plasma corticosterone profiles during hatching were altered in embryos exposed to higher CO2; however, they dropped to normal levels at d 21 of incubation. Importantly, the hatching process was delayed and synchronised in the test group, resulting in a narrowed HW which was 2.7 h shorter and 5.3 h later than the control group. 4. These results showed that exposing chicks to 1% CO2 concentration during pipping did not have negative impacts on physiological status of newly hatched chicks. In addition, it may have a significant impact on the physiological mechanisms controlling hatching and have benefits for the health and welfare of chickens by reducing the waiting time after hatching.

SUMMARY – The aim of the study was to analyze zygomatic air cell defect (ZACD) incidence using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and validity of panoramic radiograph as a comparative method of ZACD diagnostics. The connection between ZACD incidence, age, left/right temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and comorbidity with diagnosis of TMJ disorder was analyzed. Panoramic radiographs and MRIs of 140 TMJs of 70 consecutive patients with previously confirmed TMJ diagnosis were compared in the study. A grading system (4-point scale from ‘0’ for absence to ‘3’ for most extended pneumatization) was used to determine low signal on MRIs as pneumatization of temporal bone. ZACD was diagnosed in 22 joints of 15 patients (incidence, 20.4%), with seven patients having bilateral appearance. In the joints of nine patients, ZACD was identified as extensive according to the grading scale. The validity of ZACD findings on panoramic radiographs compared with MRI findings yielded 0.45 sensitivity and 0.98 specificity. There was no relation (p>0.05) between comorbidity of ZACD and TMJ disorder, either by age or side of the body. More prevalent ZACD in our MRI analysis than in other researches based on panoramic radiographs could be explained by the expected superimposed osseous structures in the area of articular eminence.

RESULTS: Mastoid air cell volume, as well as maxillary sinus volume, of the deviated side was smaller than that of the contralateral side, but these were not statistically significant. There was no correlation between NSA and volumes of mastoid air cell and the maxillary sinus. There also was no correlation between NSD/NC ratio and mastoid air cell and maxillary sinus volumes. Significant linear and growth regression was found between age and volume of the mastoid air cell and maxillary sinus but not between age and NSA and NSD/NC ratio. CONCLUSION: Mastoid air cell volume and maxillary sinus volume of the deviated side tended to be smaller than those of the contralateral side, which suggests that NSD can influence both aerations. However, because the degree of NSD did not correlate with the volumes of the mastoid air cell and maxillary sinus in this study, we should consider that further possible factors may be involved in both aerations.

Travel with long hours will create discomfort feeling for passenger especially express bus passenger. Long hour travel will create physiological stress on passenger. It may due to seat space limitation, noise, vibration, seat hardness as well as seat comfort. Seat comfort is a subjective feeling that related to psychological aspect of passenger. In this project, the bus passenger seat is integrated with air-based and gel-based material. In Malaysia, most of the express coaches are using polyurethane foam based cushion in the seat padding. This type of the seat padding may cause a bus passenger who sit for long journey will feel uncomfortable and fatigue. There are two main causes which lead to seating discomfort which is vibration and pressure distribution on the seat. The new design a bus passenger seat is using air-based cushion to improve the seating comfort. The air-based seat was validated by using MatLab SimuLINK software. In the model validation process, the parameters of air cell height gave effect on the pressure change rate of air cushion model. The comfortable level of the air cushion could be improved by reducing the pressure change rate and cell height.

Background and Aim: The aim was to determine the prevalence of zygomatic air cell defect (ZACD) among children of Indian origin and also to determine the dominant form of ZACD. Materials and Methods: One thousand six hundred and eighty-eight routine panoramic radiographs of subjects between 7 and 18 years, processed between January 2006 and January 2009 were screened, recorded and analyzed for ZACD. Results: Of the 1688 panoramic radiographs examined, 768 were of males and 920 of females. The radiographs were divided into two groups, Group I comprising of subjects in the age 7-12 years and other Group II in the age range 13-18 years. ZACD was found in 50 subjects, accounting for prevalence of 2.96%. Other occurrences found were unilateral 38 cases, bilateral 12, unilocular 20 and multilocular 42 respectively. Conclusion: This study described the prevalence and characteristics of ZACD among selected Indian children. It is essential to know and determine this variant of normal anatomy and differentiate it from pathologies.

In a preliminary experiment, the influence of pigment color variation on the temperature readings of the shells (EST) of live embryonated Ross 708 broiler hatching eggs was tested. Prior to set, eggshell color in L*, a*, and b* coordinates were measured at the equator of each egg. Eggshell pigmentation was found not to influence EST from zero through 18 d of incubation (DOI). In a subsequent experiment, EST, as well as air cell (ACT) and cloaca (CLT) temperature measurements were used for the calculation of absolute (GH2O) and specific (gH20) eggshell conductance values for these same types of eggs. An infrared thermometer was used to determine EST from zero to 19 DOI, ACT was measured using a transponder from 12 to 19 DOI, and CLT was determined using a transponder at 4:00 PM at 19 DOI. In the 12 to 19 DOI interval, the values for GH2O as well as for gH20 that were calculated using either EST or ACT were significantly correlated (r ≥ 0.99; P < 0.0001). A similar correlation level for both GH2O and gH20 was likewise observed in the 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM time period at 19 DOI when either EST, ACT, or CLT was used. However, in the 12 to 19 DOI interval, calculated GH2O and gH20 values based on ACT were significantly different from those based on EST. In addition, a significant difference in calculated GH2O and gH20 values resulted when ACT was used rather than when EST or CLT was used in the 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM time period at 19 DOI. In both time periods, GH2O and gH20 values calculated using ACT were significantly lower than those derived using the other 2 types of measurements. These findings suggest that although EST was not affected by shell coloration, because ACT more closely reflects embryo body temperature, it should be used to more accurately calculate the GH2O and gH20 of Ross 708 broiler hatching eggs.

Objectives To evaluate the effect of the degree of the mastoid pneumatization on the success rate of cartilage type 1 tympanoplasty. Study design A retrospective clinical chart review. Methods In total, 90 patients (44 females and 46 males; average age, 38.40 ± 11.12 years; age range: 21-65 years) who underwent cartilage type 1 tympanoplasty were included. Demographics and anatomical outcomes were recorded. The patients were divided into 2 groups in terms of anatomical success. In group A, all patients had intact grafts without perforation, retraction, or lateralization, and a dry ear, at 6 months postoperatively. In group B, reperforation of the tympanic membrane was evident 6 months postoperatively. The mastoid air cell volumes of each groups were compared. Results The mean mastoid pneumatization in groups A and B was 5.32 ± 1.96 and 5.06 ± 2.12 cm, respectively. The mastoid pneumatization of diseased ears did not differ between the groups (P > 0.05). The mastoid pneumatization of diseased ears did not differ between males and females (P > 0.05). The mastoid pneumatization of normal ears did not differ between the groups (P > 0.05). The mastoid pneumatization of normal ears did not differ between males and females (P > 0.05). Conclusions The degree of mastoid pneumatization did not affect the success rate of cartilage type 1 tympanoplasty. Further studies with larger numbers of patients are needed to evaluate the relationship between the degree of the mastoid pneumatization and anatomical outcomes after placement of various graft types.

The relationships of eggshell, air cell, and embryo cloacal temperatures in Ross × Ross 708 broiler hatching eggs were determined. Twenty eggs were weighed and set on each of 3 tray levels of a single incubator. Eggshell temperature (EST) of the eggs were recorded once in the morning (AM) and afternoon (PM) between 0 and 19 d of incubation (DOI) using an infrared thermometer (IRT). All eggs were candled and a transponder was implanted in the air cell of eggs containing live embryos (12 per tray level) at 12 DOI. At 19 DOI, transponders were implanted in the cloaca of live embryos from those same eggs. Air cell temperature (ACT) and EST readings were recorded once in the AM and PM between 12 and 19 DOI, and ACT and cloaca temperature (CLT) readings were recorded every 6 h between 19 and 21 DOI. The EST and ACT readings between 13 and 19 DOI were positively correlated. However, their respective mean temperatures between 13 and 19 DOI differed. The EST and ACT were not significantly influenced by tray level. Nevertheless, a main effect due to location (eggshell vs. air cell), and an interaction between DOI and time of day (AM and PM) in the 13 to 19 DOI interval were observed. Furthermore, an interaction was observed between location (air cell and cloaca) and the 6 h sequential time periods in the 19 to 21 DOI interval. However, across the entire 19 to 21 DOI interval, mean ACT and CLT were not significantly different, and were positively correlated. These data suggest that ACT readings are higher than those of EST during the last half of incubation, and that between 13 and 19 DOI, ACT readings may have the potential for use as a minimally invasive method by which to more accurately estimate the true core body temperature of broiler embryos. The effects of this method on hatchability and post-hatch performance need determination to better establish its practicality.

This study describes the changes in mastoid air cell system (MACS) geometry with age in ears with a history of otitis media (OM), without (GR-I) or with (GR-II) middle ear fluid on the CT scan.Thirty-seven (74 MACSs) CT scans were selected to approximate 4 MACSs/year between 1 and 18 years. For each MACS, the volume, surface area and surface area/volume ratio were reconstructed using standard procedures. Correlation analysis was used to define the left-right relatedness for the geometric parameters, and regression analysis was used to determine the effect of age on those parameters for each group.Twenty scans were from female and 17 from males. Fluid was observed in 12 left, 4 right and 10 bilateral MACSs. The MACS volume and surface area of GR-I increased with age, were significantly greater than those for age-matched MACSs in GR-II, but show large variability. Those measures in GR-II were independent of age and a large percentage of these MACS volumes was5 ml. The surface-area/volume ratio for MACSs in both groups was independent of age and group assignment. The left-right correlations for the three geometric parameters of the MACS were significant for all MACS in the two groups, and for bilateral MACS concordant for group assignment. The left-right correlations for surface area and volume were not significant for bilateral MACSs discordant for group assignment.These results suggest that: the growth of MACS volume and surface area is genetically programmed but that this is disrupted by long-lasting OM; the effect of OM on MACS growth may depend on the duration and timing of the disease, and the MACS surface area/volume ratio does not explain the effect of MACS volume on the rate of gas exchange between middle ear and blood.

Introduction.Osteoma of the temporal bone is a very uncommon benign tumor of bone. Osteomas may occur in the external auditory canals but are reported to be very rare in the mastoid bone.Case Report.A 36-year-old male presented to our department with a hard swelling behind the right ear diagnosed as osteoma. Complete excision was done through a postauricular approach. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of osteoma.Conclusion.Osteomas, although rare, should be considered when dealing with any hard mastoid swelling. Complete removal can be ensured by drilling till the normal cortical bone is reached to avoid recurrence. A cortical mastoidectomy should be done if the mastoid air cell system is involved.

Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the developmental relationship between adenoid tissue volume and mastoid air cell volume, using a 3D reconstruction technique. Study design Cross-sectional retrospective study. Subjects and methods Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) images were obtained using three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and volume-rendering techniques (VRT). The subjects were 63 boys and 37 girls, 3–16 years of age. The volumes of bilateral mastoid air cells and adenoids marked in axial–coronal–sagittal planes were calculated. The patients were grouped into three categories according to adenoid tissue volume, total mastoid volume (TMV), and age. Results No significant difference was noted between the right mastoid volume (RMV) and the left mastoid volume (LMV) or between age and sex ( p = 0.368; p = 0.549; p = 0.454). The incremental increase in adenoid tissue volume did not correlate with TMV ( r = −0.161, r = −0.279, r = 0.015). The incremental increase in TMV did not correlate with the volume of adenoid tissue ( r = 0.024, r = 0.148, r = 0.017). Conclusions No significant correlation was obtained between the incremental increase in adenoid tissue volume and TMV or the incremental increase in TMV and adenoid tissue volume. There does not seem to be a developmental relationship between adenoid tissue volume and TMV.

The middle ear (ME) surface area/volume ratio (SA/V) is greater than that of the tympanum. The rate of ME pressure decrease is proportional to the ME SA/V. The mastoid air-cell system (MACS) will not function as an ME gas reserve unless the blood perfusion/surface area is much greater for the tympanum than the MACS and decreases as MACS volume increases.To measure the MACS and tympanum surface areas and volumes and ascertain whether the MACS could function as an ME gas reserve.Twenty adult subjects with a wide range of MACS volumes underwent CT of their MEs. The left and right surface areas and volumes of the tympanum and MACS were reconstructed and entered into a simple perfusion-limited model of transmucosal gas exchange. In this model the MACS would be a gas reserve if ME SA/V was less than the tympanum SA/V or equivalently, if their ratio was less than a critical value of 1.Both MACS and tympanum SA were linearly related to their volumes. MACS SA/V and the ME SA/V were significantly greater than those for the tympanum. Inputting the measured values into the model yielded a critical value of 1.4, which was significantly greater than 1.

This review suggests a reference to the postnatal growth of mastoid air cells and bone. Information was retrieved from studies having large consecutive age groups, in order to reveal a development pattern. Data regarding origin, gender, and antibiotic treatment was investigated as well. Most measurements were obtained by planimetry. Assessment of the various data sources suggested the antrum to be well developed at birth (1-1.5 cm2), the mastoid cells to be about 3.5-4 cm2 at 1 year, followed by a linear growth till the age of 6 (1-1.2 cm2/year), having a slower increment up to adult size at puberty (approximately 12 cm2). The mastoid bone expansion is about 0.6-0.9 cm/year in length and width and 0.4 cm/year in depth in the first year, followed by half that rate until the age of 6-7. At puberty there was a slower sprout reaching adult size. Different ethnic groups share similar mastoid aeration and bone growth patterns. There were no differences between mastoid aeration measured at the pre-antibiotic era and after its widespread use. In conclusion, there are three distinguishable phases of mastoid pneumatization from birth till reaching final size. Bone and air cell compartments share a similar growth pattern; bone expansion lags behind aeration. Antibiotic treatment for otitis may have no impact upon mastoid aeration.

Soy bread was formulated to impart different isoflavone profiles by addition of almond: a natural source of β-glucosidase. In this study, the influence of almond powder on loaf quality and storage stability of soy bread was investigated using thermal analysis, texture, loaf volume and air cell imaging techniques. Lipids introduced with the almond fraction, served as mediators to strengthen the interaction between wheat and soy protein, thereby increasing dough extensibility. Loaf quality of the almond soy bread was therefore improved since the collapse of air cells during bread preparation was prevented. This in turn favored better loaf quality. Additionally, water binding strength and changes thereof during storage, probed by thermal analysis, were found to significantly hinder the staling rate during prolonged storage of soy-containing breads.

To study the differences among commercial eggs from four housing systems i.e. cage, barn, free range and organic, 41 physical and chemical parameters were evaluated on 28 fresh egg samples from the Italian market. The univariate statistic analysis evidenced that organic eggs had the highest whipping capacity and foam consistency but the lowest freshness (the highest air cell height) and albumen quality (the lowest Haugh Unit); cage eggs presented instead the lowest whipping capacity and the highest shell resistance to breaking. The multivariate technique discriminant partial least-squares regression was unable to correctly classify the eggs from the four housing systems but successfully differentiated cage eggs from alternative (organic + barn + free range) eggs. The variables with the most discriminant power were shell breaking resistance, overrun, protein content, and shell thickness.

Introduction: Zygomatic Air Cell Defect (ZACD) has been considered as a normal radiographic variant with a spare knowledge. This should be judged before any surgical procedure of the temporal region as lack of which can lead to infections of cranium and may other complications. Aim: The present study was undertaken to estimate the prevalence and characteristics of ZACD and to propose a classification for the same using digital panoramic radiography. Materials and Methods: A total of 6825 digital panoramic radiographs were evaluated retrospectively of subjects aged between 4-90 years from both genders. The radiographs were evaluated by 4 (four) oral radiologists and the ZACD was recorded only when the decision was indisputable. Results: Out of 6825 digital panoramic radiographs evaluated ZACD was noticed in 133 subjects with an overall prevalence of 1.94%. A male predilection was noted in the present study with the maximum prevalence during the second, third and fourth decade of life and as the age increases its prevalence decreases. Most commonly it was found to be unilateral and the unilocular presentation being more common. Conclusion: Most of the finding of the present study is in acceptance with those conducted previously, but some of the finding contradicts those in the previous ones. It can be because of low sample size of the previous studies. Moreover this study gives a new system to classify these defects to help diagnose the nature of the defect.

The mastoid apophysis originates from a recent phylogenetic formation, associated with the standing attitude and it is currently considered as an evolution of the bone super-structures. The aim of the present study was to measure the diameters of the mastoid and the temporal bone in the Greek adult population. A total of 298 temporal bones from 149 cadavers (74 male, 75 female) were examined. The distances between six landmarks were measured by means of a pachymeter on both vertical and transverse axes of the mastoids and the temporal bone. The estimated mean values for each dimension were as follows: vertical diameter, 2.37 ± 0.42 cm; transverse diameter, 2.33 ± 0.51 cm; anterior margin, 2.12 ± 0.67 cm; posterior margin, 1.96 ± 0.55 cm; oblong diameter, 10.30 ± 0.60 cm; while the mean distance between the mastoid apex and mandibular fossa calva was 3.67 ± 0.35 cm. Gender differences were detected for the vertical (P < 0.001), the transverse diameter of the mastoid (P < 0.001), the anterior (P < 0.001) and the posterior margin of the mastoid (P < 0.001). In both genders, the vertical diameter of the mastoid was positively correlated with the transverse diameter, as well as with its anterior and posterior margins. In the present study, direct measurements of the mastoid and temporal bone in a Mediterranean population are reported. This description may facilitate a more accurate surgical approach to the temporal bone structures.

The physiological function of the mastoid air cell system (MACS) with respect to middle ear (ME) pressure-regulation remains controversial because predictive mathematical models and experimental data to formulate and test hypotheses are lacking.A mathematical description of MACS volume effects on the rate of ME pressure change is presented; the agreement between published data and model prediction is examined for consistency with the hypothesis that the MACS acts as a functional rate-limiter of ME pressure change, and an explanation for the relationship between MACS volume and otitis media is discussed.The mathematical description shows that the value of a single, free parameter, termed the "MACS buffering efficiency" (M) determines if MACS volume affects the rate of ME pressure change caused by diffusive gas exchange. The MACS serves no rate-limiting function for M=0, acts as a gas sink for M1 and acts as a gas reserve (rate-limiter) for M1.Fitting the model equation to published adult human data yielded an estimate for M of 0.2. This implies that larger MACS volumes are associated with lesser rates of change in ME pressure caused by diffusive gas exchange and lesser required frequencies of effective Eustachian tube openings to maintain near ambient ME pressures.If well-controlled studies confirm M1 for children and adults, larger MACS volumes will increase the time required to develop sufficient ME underpressures to cause otitis media by hydrops ex vacuo during transient or prolonged periods of Eustachian tube dysfunction.

A minimally invasive approach for cochlear implantation involves drilling a narrow linear path through the temporal bone from the skull surface directly to the cochlea for insertion of the electrode array without the need for an invasive mastoidectomy. Potential drill positioning errors must be accounted for to predict the effectiveness and safety of the procedure. The drilling accuracy of a system used for this procedure was evaluated in bone surrogate material under a range of clinically relevant parameters. Additional experiments were performed to isolate the error at various points along the path to better understand why deflections occur. An experimental setup to precisely position the drill press over a target was used. Custom bone surrogate test blocks were manufactured to resemble the mastoid region of the temporal bone. The drilling error was measured by creating divots in plastic sheets before and after drilling and using a microscope to localize the divots. The drilling error was within the tolerance needed to avoid vital structures and ensure accurate placement of the electrode; however, some parameter sets yielded errors that may impact the effectiveness of the procedure when combined with other error sources. The error increases when the lateral stage of the path terminates in an air cell and when the guide bushings are positioned further from the skull surface. At contact points due to air cells along the trajectory, higher errors were found for impact angles of $$45^{\circ }$$ and higher as well as longer cantilevered drill lengths. The results of these experiments can be used to define more accurate and safe drill trajectories for this minimally invasive surgical procedure.

The aim of this research was to study furosine as a reference index for expressing the age of commercial shell eggs in terms of equivalent egg age. Seventy five commercial samples of grade A eggs purchased on the Italian market were analysed for air cell height, Haugh Units, 3,3′,5,5′ tetramethylbenzidine test, and furosine level. The values obtained were reported as a function of egg age calculated from the minimum durability dates printed on the packages. At equal egg age, a wide data variation for all indices was observed, thus indicating the great influence of commercialization condition on the assessed indices. An average kinetics of furosine development in albumen at 20 °C was also computed from nine storage experiments of shell eggs laid by hens of different ages and breeds. The equivalent egg age of the commercial samples, expressed as days at 20 °C, was computed by substituting the furosine value of each sample in the average kinetics equation.

Background: We have developed a technique for direct volume measurement based on high-resolution CT. This report will describe our findings on the measurement of the mastoid air cell system of infants, and its developmental changes with age. Methods: The study covered 43 males and 37 females, aged 1–18 years. The temporal bone was imaged by slicing at 2 mm thickness through the high-resolution CT, so that the entire air cell system was included, and the resultant data were analyzed by the image processing technique. Results: It was confirmed that the mastoid air volume increased with age. By 9–10 years old, it had reached about 80% of the volume of an adult, and at 14–15 years old, it had reached the mean adult value. Conclusion: Our technique, based on CT image, proved to be much more useful because of the higher accuracy and capability of three-dimensional assessment. The detailed analysis described here could have been obtained only through the postmortem histological study. Our method is of high significance because it allows assessing the antemortem developmental changes in infants.

Aim To determine the prevalence, radiographic appearance, variations, characteristics and establishing dominant location and type of zygomatic air cell defect (ZACD) among the North Indian population. Materials and methods The panoramic radiographs of 2500 dental clinic outpatients were examined for the presence of ZACD for estimating the prevalence and characteristics of the ZACD. Results ZACD was found in 63 patients with a prevalence of 2.5% with male predominance. Unilateral (70%) and unilocular appearance (78%) of ZACD were the dominant patterns. Patients with ZACD had a mean age of 37.4 years and a range of 19-78 years. Conclusion The prevalence of ZACD among the Indian population is in accordance with the other studies carried out in other populations of the world. So it is important for surgeons to assess location of ZACD before planning any surgical procedure in order to avoid intraoperative complications.

Aims: The purpose of these experiments was to determine whether the heart and lungs of young chicks harboured bacteria. Methods and Results: Samples of the heart and lungs were aseptically removed from chicks on scheduled sampling days. Experiment 1 showed that of the 360 birds evaluated during the late embryonic and early post-hatching periods, only 10·8% harboured bacteria in the heart, lungs, and heart and lungs simultaneously. Experiment 2 suggested that bacteria in these organs were transient. Twenty-three bacterial species were found in the hearts whereas 30 were found in the lungs. Experiment 3 showed that only 1·4% of embryos harboured bacteria in the yolk, albumen, heart and lungs whereas 12·9% of the embryos had bacteria in the air cell. Conclusions: During the post-hatching period, there was a higher incidence of bacterial isolation in the heart and lungs, whilst during the embryonic development period, there was a lower incidence of bacterial isolation from these two organs. Results suggested that the heart and lungs do not have a residual bacterial flora; rather, opportunistic bacteria occasionally pass through these tissues. Significance and Impact of the Study: These experiments proved that bacteria could be isolated in the heart and lungs of healthy chicks reared from E17 to 3 weeks of age.

The effectiveness of thyrotrophin-releasing-hormone (TRH) as a secretagogue in turkey embryos was tested. Fertilized turkey eggs were injected with TRH after 24 d of incubation. In an experiment to determine an effective route and dose for TRH administration, it was shown that a single manual injection of 200 microL containing 2.15 microg of TRH, into the air cell or the same injection containing 5.0 microg through the bottom of the egg, was effective in elevating plasma concentrations of thyroxine (T4) 60 min after injection. In a second experiment, 5 microg of TRH in a volume of 200 microL was injected through the bottom of each egg. Injections were performed mechanically into eggs held in a commercial incubator. The injection increased blood plasma T4 for 5 h after a 30-min lag. Eggs from two genetic strains of turkeys were injected in Experiment 3. The TRH elicited a persistent response for 120 min from one strain but resulted in a slightly depressed response from the other, suggesting that subtle differences in the maturation of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-thyroid axis may exist in commercial strains of turkeys. We concluded that TRH is an effective secretagogue for T4 in 24-d-old turkey embryos.

This study examined the effect of rapid cooling with air and CO2 on shell egg quality over 14 wk. The 240 fresh eggs were initially heated to 47 C for 24 h in an incubator, cooled using rapid air cooling or CO2 cooling, and then stored in air or CO2 in 250-mL jars for 14 wk. The CO2 levels were recorded of the jar atmosphere, of the egg air cell, and of the egg albumen. The Haugh units of each egg, pH, and of albumen from five eggs per group were also recorded. Haugh units are a logarithmic, empirical relationship between albumen height and egg weight (Stadelman, 1995). Haugh units for the control eggs averaged 70.8 over 10 wk of the study. The control eggs were of such poor quality that they could not be sampled after 10 wk. The air-cooled and CO2-stored eggs averaged 70.3 Haugh units over the 14-wk storage period; however, the egg quality significantly deteriorated after 10 wk. The CO2-cooled and CO2-stored eggs averaged 75.9 Haugh units over the 14 wk study, with no observable decrease in quality. Rapid air-cooling produces a lower quality egg than rapid cooling with CO2. Subsequent storage of rapidly air-cooled eggs in CO2 may increase shelf life, but Haugh units were not statistically different from rapid air-cooled eggs. CO2-cooling and subsequent storage in CO2 increased Haugh units. The shelf life of shell eggs could be extended to greater than 14 wk when the eggs were CO2-cooled and CO2-stored.

The gas composition of the air cell in a shell egg is influenced by heating from egg washing and candling and the method of cooling and storage. This study found that N2 gas (-122 C), CO2 gas (-45 C), and cold air (-15 C) could be used to rapidly cool shell eggs from 47.7 C to 7 C in 30 min or less. These results suggest that the gas composition of the air cell in shell eggs can be significantly modified using N2 cooling and CO2 cooling. Commercial field studies have shown that these modifications, which take place during cryogenic cooling, can significantly reduce microbial levels and increase shelf life of shell eggs. Storage in a modified atmosphere environment further enhanced these changes. It was found that the CO2 concentration in the air cell of a shell egg can be increased from 0.04 to 48% by CO2 cooling and storage in a CO2 environment.

Physical and sensory characteristics of quick breads (e.g. muffins) formulated to contain 0%, 40%, 50% or 60% of partially defatted soy flour substituted for wheat flour were evaluated. As defatted soy flour levels increased, muffin batter linespread, baked volume, peak height at the crown and lightness (L* value) decreased while baked product air cell number, redness and yellowness (a* and b* values), crust surface unevenness, graininess, aftertaste, tenderness and moistness increased. Results indicate that partially defatted soy flour substituted for wheat flour at high levels in muffins adversely affected both physical and sensory characteristics.

The mastoid air cell system has been recognized as an important contributor to the pathophysiology of middle ear inflammatory diseases. Various methods of temporal bone imaging have been designed to investigate the correlation between middle ear disease and mastoid pneumatization. In this study, the mastoid air cell system was reconstructed three-dimensionally from sagittal tomographic images of the temporal bone on X-ray films, using a personal computer to evaluate the mastoid pneumatization in a total of 29 patients with chronic otitis media, adhesive otitis media, adhesive-type cholesteatoma, attic cholesteatoma and cholesterol granuloma, and in five normal subjects as controls. Reconstructed three-dimensional images of the mastoid air cell system and its volume were analyzed. The reconstructed images were helpful in recognizing the three-dimensional solid appearance of the mastoid air cell system. The volume of the reconstructed mastoid air cell system was significantly reduced compared with that in the controls in each of the patient groups. Mastoid pneumatization in the patients with adhesive-type cholesteatoma was significantly suppressed compared with that in the adhesive otitis media patients. Interestingly, the adhesive otitis media group showed cell development at the tip of mastoid process, whereas the group of adhesive-type cholesteatoma did not, suggesting a difference in the pathophysiology in the two diseases. We found that three-dimensional reconstruction of the temporal bone using sagittal tomographic images was useful in evaluating the state of mastoid air cell system development in individual cases and in investigating the pathophysiology in middle ear disease.

Using a temporoparietal fascial flap and hydroxyapatite ceramics, we treated a patient for complications after a neurosurgical operation for glossopharyngeal neuralgia. These consisted of pneumocephalus and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea resulting from fistulas of mastoid air cells associated with a subcutaneous dead space. By means of the temporoparietal fascial flap, we were able to fill the dead space and reinforce the repaired dural and mastoid lesion as well. Hydroxyapatite ceramics were also useful for closing the mastoid air cell fistulas.

Objectives To evaluate the volumetric relationship between the mastoid air cell (MAC) and paranasal sinus (PNS) in the pediatric population using three-dimensional reconstruction and the analysis technique of CT. Study design Retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at a university-based, secondary referral hospital. Methods PNS CT imaging data of 62 children (40 boys and 22 girls; mean age = 13.4 ± 4.0 years) was reconstructed to the three-dimensional model with the surface-rendering algorithm (lower threshold of −1024 HU and upper threshold of −318 HU), and subsequently measuring the volume of the three PNSs (frontal, maxillary and sphenoid) and MAC. Hierarchical linear regression analysis was used to control the effect of age. Results Controlling the effect of age, no significant linear regression relationship was found between the volume of MAC and PNSs. It was observed that PNSs and MAC showed a significant linear relationship with age. The regression slopes of PNSs were larger than that of MAC, especially the growth of maxillary and sphenoid sinuses was faster and larger than that of the frontal sinus and MAC. As the coefficient of determination was extremely small, the aging process itself could not effectively explain the volume variation of PNSs and MAC. Conclusion No interaction was observed in the pneumatization of the three PNSs (frontal, maxillary, and sphenoid) and MAC. It was found that the growths of PNSs and MAC are influenced by age. Further, maxillary and sphenoid sinuses tend to grow faster and become larger than the frontal sinus and mastoid air cell system. Thus, it is verified that environmental factors could be involved in the postnatal pneumatization process of the PNSs and MAC, which might influence MAC to a greater extent than the PNSs.

The aim of the investigation was to ascertain the influence of different doses of vitamin C injected at selected dates of incubation into the eggs of broiler breeders and Pekin ducks on hatchability. The injected vitamin C doses were administered into the air cell on the 13th, 15th and 17th days (3 and 6 mg--chickens) and on the 12th and 20th days (4 and 8 mg--ducks) of incubation. In the case of chickens, no significant differences were recorded between the control and experimental groups with regard to hatchability, although the highest value of hatchability from fertilized eggs was determined in the group injected with 6 mg of vitamin C on the 15th day of incubation. On the other hand, in ducks, significant differences were found between the control and experimental groups (4 mg of vitamin C administered on days 12 and 20 and 8 mg of vitamin C injected on day 20 of incubation) regarding hatchability. The value of this trait was higher in the group of eggs injected with ascorbic acid in comparison with the eggs which were not treated. On average, the difference amounted to 32.5 percentage points. Similarly, in the case of the number of dead embryos and unhatched chicks, better results were observed in the above-mentioned experimental groups. In summary, vitamin C injected into chicken eggs failed to influence hatchability. In the case of duck eggs, it was demonstrated that their injection on the 20th day of incubation with selected doses of vitamin C (4 and 8 mg/egg) improved hatchability by decreasing the proportions of dead and unhatched embryos.

Aim The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence, radiographic appearance, and characteristics of zygomatic air cell defects (ZACD) in digital panoramic radiographs in a North Indian population. Methods The dental panoramic radiographs of 800 outpatients were selected from the records of the department, and were examined retrospectively to evaluate the variations and characteristics of ZACD. Groups were compared by χ2 analysis for the presence of ZACD. Results ZACD were identified in 46 of 800 patients, giving an overall prevalence of 5.7%. Patients with ZACD were aged 4–60 years, with a mean age of 31.43 years. Most patients with ZACD were in their thirties. ZACD showed a no gender predilection; 29 of 46 patients were male (63.4%), and 17 were female (36.6%). Thirty cases (65.2%) of ZACD were unilateral, with 20 cases occurring on the right side. In 16 cases (34.8%), ZACD was bilateral. Forty four of the defects were unilocular, and two of the defects were multilocular. Conclusion Digital panoramic radiographs are considered better than conventional panoramic radiographs in locating ZACD. Further, the presence of ZACD might be valuable for age estimations, to some extent. Further studies are required to investigate the pneumatization of articular eminence before puberty.

1. Heterophils (H) and lymphocytes (L) were measured in embryos that had pipped into the air cell and through the shell, and in chicks from 0‐d‐old to 8 d of age. 2. Numbers of lymphocytes in the perinatal stages were very low with H:L ratios greater than 5.0. 3. Posthatching H:L ratios decreased in a quadratic manner from 1.76 at hatch to 0.39 on day 8.

Myeloma in the left temporal region was seen in a 71-year-old male who also had facial palsy, hearing loss and tinnitus on the left. In this case, none of the laboratory test results had indicated myeloma. Diagnosis of myeloma in this case was made from findings of a CT scan of temporal bone and the results of biopsy of the external auditory canal lesion. In the CT scan, marked destruction of the bone was seen, extending from the mastoid air cell to the posterior wall of the external auditory canal. The biopsy of the mass lesion in the left auditory canal revealed proliferation of lymphoplasma-cytoid cells. This case is reported along with laboratory test findings, clinical findings, and a review of the literature.

Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term clinical outcomes in children with cleft palate. Methods One hundred eight patients with cleft palate (CP) were investigated. Microscopic observation of the middle ears was performed periodically. If chronic otitis media with effusion (OME) was diagnosed at 1 year of age or later, ventilation tube (VT) placement was performed. The air-filled area of the mastoid air cells was checked on X-rays obtained at 1 and 5 years. The data from each measurement were tested statistically by the bootstrap method and Wilcoxon's rank-sum test. The clinical course from age 6 to the final examination (average 9.42 years) and the language development at 5 years were analyzed using data from the medical records of individual patients. Results VT placements were performed at 5 years of age or younger in 41 CP patients (82 ears, 38%). About 30% of patients treated by VT placement at 5 years of age or younger required myringotomy and/or VT re-placement at 6 years of age or over. Ninety-five percent of patients who had not been treated by VT insertion at 5 years of age or younger showed a favorable subsequent clinical course. Patients treated by VT insertion at 5 years of age or younger had significantly smaller mastoid air cell areas as measured at 5 years of age and also at 1 year of age. No significant difference in language development was observed between the CP patients that underwent /did not undergo VT placement. Conclusions VT placement should be positively undertaken in CP children who have small mastoid air cell areas as measured at 1 year of age, because an unfavorable prognosis of OME is expected in such patients. It is considered that patients treated by VT placement at 5 years of age or younger should be carefully followed up for the development of OME even after 6 years of age. Thus, measurement of the mastoid air cell area at the age of 1 year is useful for determining the therapeutic program.

Introduction:The geometry of the adult human mastoid air cell system has not previously been described over a large range of mastoid air cell volumes.Methods:Twenty subjects with a wide range of mastoid air cell pneumatised areas, as determined by X-ray, underwent computed tomography scanning of the middle ear. Mastoid air cell surface areas and volumes were then reconstructed from serial imaging sections, using Image J software.Results:Mastoid air cell volumes varied from 0.7 to 21.4 ml, and were linearly related to the pneumatised area. Right and left mastoid air cell volumes and surface areas were highly correlated. The mastoid air cell surface area was a linear function of volume.Conclusion:The relationship between mastoid air cell surface area and volume is similar over a wide range of volumes. Given that the rate of gas exchange across the mastoid air cell mucosa is related to the mastoid air cell surface area, that rate will thus also be a direct linear function of the mastoid air cell volume.

Objectives This research involved retrospectively evaluating panoramic radiographs of patients from India with the intention of assessing the prevalence of Zygomatic Air Cell Defect (ZACD) and establishing its dominant location and type. Methods Seven thousand seven hundred and fifty-five panoramic radiographs of routine outpatients aged between 19 and 91 years were concomitantly evaluated by four investigators for estimating the prevalence and characteristics of the Zygomatic Air Cell Defect. Results The prevalence of ZACD was noted to be 1.82%, with male preponderance. Unilateralality and multilocular appearance of ZACD were the dominant patterns observed. Conclusion The frequency of ZACD amongst Indian population is in harmony with most of the similar studies conducted on various geographic populations.
