Silver nanocrystal arrays had attracted much attention due to the unique plasmonic effect of their ordered nanostructure and the synergy among adjacent nanocrystals. Conventional preparation methods had several limitations, such as high cost, harsh preparation conditions, and complicated influencing factors, which could not be employed to fabricate the nanocrystal arrays in highly controlled fashion. To solve these issues, we reported ordered arrays of different Ag nanocrystals with precise control prepared by utilizing amphiphilic star-like poly(4-vinylpyridine)

Realizing precise control over the size and functionality of nanomaterials is a prerequisite to their diverse applications in the areas of biology, environment, energy, and other emerging nanotechnologies. Herein, we demonstrate a general template strategy capable of fabricating functional noble metallic nanorods and nanopeapods. The templates are hollow silica nanotubes (HSNTs) produced from unimolecular micelles of bottlebrush copolymers. The variation of chain length and chemical composition of bottlebrush copolymers achieved through the reversible-deactivation radical polymerization dictates the length (L), inner diameter (D), and thickness (h) of HSNTs. Using such HSNTs as nanoreactors enables the fabrication of noble metals such as Au, Ag, and Pt nanorods or nanopeapods with silica shells in a space-confined manner. While the thickness and the interior space of HSNTs regulate the diffusion and intake of metal ion precursors, the formation of nanorods or nanopeapods with different lengths and diameters is well controlled. Upon etching out the silica shell, the resulting metallic nanorods are readily functionalized with polymeric ligands for excellent dispersity in aqueous and/or organic media. This feasible and versatile strategy represents a great leap forward in the controlled synthesis of one-dimensional metallic nanomaterials and hopefully promotes understanding their structure-determined physiochemical properties and board applications in medicine and catalysis.

Various piezoelectric nanomaterials were utilized in ultrasound-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), owing to their outstanding piezoelectric effect. However, the relationship between the morphology of those piezocatalysts and polymerization has not been clearly established. Herein, we employed different piezoelectric zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials to achieve novel mechano-induced ATRP (mechano-ATRP). Based on the synergistic effect of piezoelectric properties and specific surface area, the catalytic activity of 1D ZnO nanorods (1D-ZnO NRs) with increased aspect ratio outperformed that of 0D ZnO nanoparticles (0D-ZnO NPs). Compared to the conventional ATRP system, this system exhibited extraordinary activity toward the less activated monomer acrylonitrile (67% conversion after 6 h), with a narrow molecular weight distribution (polydispersity index ∼ 1.19). Furthermore, implications of ZnO loading, copper salt amount, degree of polymerization, monomer, and solvent were also studied for the highly efficient mechano-ATRP.

The utilizing light with broadband range has attracted lots of research interest for the photo induced reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP). However, it is still a challenge for a single catalyst to simultaneously respond to various lights with highly varied wavelengths. The past few years witnessed the rapid development of bottom-up synthesis strategies for preparing various nanostructures (i.e., nanoparticles, nanorods, nanowires, etc.) with distinct morphology-dependent properties. In this study, we reported a facile and efficient synthesis method for preparing anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanorings based on multiarm, starlike amphiphilic polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) diblock copolymers as nanoreactors which were prepared via a sequential atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique followed by the conversion of polystyrene-b-poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PS-b-PtBA) to PS-b-PAA. The outer PAA block of nanoreactors possessed carboxylic acid groups which could coordinate with a titanium precursor followed by high-temperature calcination to form crystalline TiO2 nanorings. The living nature of ATRP enabled the precise preparation of starlike diblock copolymer nanoreactors with a controlled length of each block (i.e., PtBA and PS), thereby tailoring the inner diameter and wall thickness of the resulting TiO2 nanorings, which were inaccessible to conventional routes.

The ambient stability and processability of organic solar cells (OSCs) are important factors for their commercialization. Herein, we selected four benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']difuran (BDF) polymers and two electron acceptors to examine the role of photovoltaic materials in the ambient stability. The investigations revealed that the MoOx layer is the detrimental factor for the ambient stabilities. The penetration of MoOx into the active layer and their interactions will strengthen the interface and form a favorable contact, hence leading to the increased photovoltaic performance, in which the efficiency loss induced by air was balanced out. As such, these BDF polymer-based non-fullerene (NF) OSCs possessed very promising ambient stabilities even after ∼1000 h with the almost maintained power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). These results drive us to further investigate the ambient processability of these NF-OSCs. The PCEs from the devices processed under ambient condition only possessed 0.3-2% loss compared to those devices under inert conditions, which suggest the significant potentials of BDF polymers to develop highly efficient and stable NF-OSCs for the practical applications.

Non-radiative recombination loss (ΔEnon-rad) has become the main limiting factor for the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, two benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]difuran (BDF) polymers (P-FT and P-FP) in combination with two electron acceptors (m-ITIC and Y6) in OSCs were employed to systemically investigate the impact of molecular orientation and interaction on energy loss in OSCs. The use of the Y6 acceptor instead of ITIC provided a reduced energy loss in OSC, regardless of the donor used, and the energy loss was lower in OSC based on P-FP, as compared to that based on P-FT. ΔEnon-rad as small as 0.23 eV was obtained in the P-FP:Y6 device, due to the small energetic disorder. In addition, the P-FP:Y6 device also possessed a promising EQEmax of 86.7%. These results provide a deep understanding of the role molecular interactions between the polymer donor and acceptor play in reducing energy loss and promoting device performance through synergic selection and optimization of donor and acceptor in OSCs.

Single pure organic molecular white light emitters (SPOMWLEs) are of significance as a new class of material for white lighting applications; however, few of them are able to emit white electroluminescence from organic light-emitting diodes. Herein, donor-π-acceptor conjugated emitters, 2PQ-PTZ and 4PQ-PTZ, were designed and synthesized as SPOMWLEs for white light emission considering the distinct advantages of their conformation isomers. The coexistence of conformational isomers in 2PQ-PTZ, which is the first experimental evidence of the coexisting quasi-axial and quasi-equatorial conformers, provides ideal flexibility to obtain white light emission from their simultaneous and well-separated fluorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence. With these remarkable properties, a 2PQ-PTZ-based white light-emitting diode (LED) with a CIE of (0.32, 0.34) and color rendering index (CRI) of 89 is demonstrated. Further, the white organic light-emitting diode (OLED) of 2PQ-PTZ exhibits a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 10.1%, which is the reported highest performance among SPOMWLE-based OLEDs.

In this work, a novel benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]difuran (BDF)-based polymer (PDiFPBDF-TBz, F13) was designed and synthesized with a wide bandgap of 1.93 eV. With the advantage of electronegative fluorine and furan unit, F13 possessed a deep HOMO level of −5.54 eV, which is favorable for higher Voc in polymer solar cells (PSCs). When F13 was blended with Y6, the device achieved a PCE of 12.7% with a Voc of 0.80 V, a Jsc of 22.61 mA cm−2 and an FF of 70.28%. More surprisingly, the unencapsulated pristine fabricated device generated a higher PCE of up to 13.34% after storing it in nitrogen or air. Further studies showed that the unencapsulated device could retain ∼92% of its original PCE even after exposure to air for ∼1150 hours and to nitrogen for ∼1370 hours, indicating quite promising stabilities. This improvement was due to the interfacial interaction of the active layer and anode layer and the stable micromorphological structure of the F13:Y6 film. The F13:Y6 device also exhibited a suppressed energy loss of 0.525 eV, which is one of the lowest among BDF polymer-based NF-PSCs. These results demonstrate that the rational design of the BDF polymer is highly critical in reaching the state-of-the-art photovoltaic performance and long-term stability.

Artificial synaptic devices and systems have become hot topics due to parallel computing, high plasticity, integration of storage, and processing to meet the challenges of the traditional Von Neumann computers. Currently, two-terminal memristors and three-terminal transistors have been mainly developed for high-density storage with high switching speed and high reliability because of the adjustable resistivity, controllable ion migration, and abundant choices of functional materials and fabrication processes. To achieve the low-cost, large-scale, and easy-process fabrication, solution-processed techniques have been extensively employed to develop synaptic electronics towards flexible and highly integrated three-dimensional (3D) neural networks. Herein, we have summarized and discussed solution-processed techniques in the fabrication of two-terminal memristors and three-terminal transistors for the application of artificial synaptic electronics mainly reported in the recent five years from the view of fabrication processes, functional materials, electronic operating mechanisms, and system applications. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects were discussed in depth to promote solution-processed techniques in the future development of artificial synapse with high performance and high integration.

A colloidal nanocrystal cluster (CNC) is a hierarchical nanostructure formed by clustering several nanocrystals into one nano-ensemble, which may exhibit unique optical or catalytic properties different from individual nanocrystals owing to the mutual interactions among neighboring component nanocrystals. However, there is still no universal synthetic route that could be applicable to diverse material compositions with precisely controlled hierarchical structures (i.e., nanocrystal number density, component nanocrystal size, and overall diameter of the CNC) up to now. Herein, a general and novel synthetic strategy was reported for crafting a wide range of inorganic CNCs (i.e., noble metal, semiconductor, and metal oxide) via utilizing amphiphilic star-like poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-polystyrene diblock copolymers as nanoreactors prepared by sequential atom transfer radical polymerization. The hierarchical structure of rationally designed CNCs could be readily tailored by varying the P4VP molecular weight of star-like nanoreactors and the parameter optimization during the CNC preparation process, which was inaccessible by conventional synthetic methods.

Silver nanomaterials have attracted a great deal of interest due to their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. However, it is still challenging to balance the high antibacterial efficiency with low damage to biological cells of silver nanostructures, especially when the diameter decreases to less than 10 nm. Here, we developed a new type of Ag nanohybrid material via a unimolecular micelle template method, which presents amazing antibacterial activities and almost noncytotoxicity. First, water-soluble multiarm star-shaped brushlike copolymer α-CD-g-[(PEO40-g-PAA50)-b-PEO5]18 was precisely synthesized and its micelle behavior in different solvents was revealed. Then, nanocrystal clusters assembled by Ag grains (Ag@Template NCs) were prepared through an in situ redox route using the unimolecular micelle of α-CD-g-[(PEO40-g-PAA50)-b-PEO5]18 as the soft template, AgNO3 as a precursor, and tetrabutylammonium borohydride (TBAB) as the reducing agent. The overall size of the achieved Ag@Template NCs is controlled by the template structure at around 40 nm (Dh in DMF), and the size of the Ag grain can be easily regulated from ∼1 to ∼5 nm by adjusting the feeding ratio of AgNO3/acrylic acid (AA) units in the template from 1:10 to 1:1. Benefitting from the structural design of the template, all Ag@Template NCs prepared here exhibit excellent dispersibility and chemical stability in different aqueous environments (neutral, pH = 5.5, and 0.9% NaCl physiological saline solution), which play a crucial role in the long-term storage and potential application in a complex physiological environment. The antibacterial and cytotoxicity tests indicate that Ag@Template NCs display much better performance than Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs), which have a comparable overall size of ∼25 nm. The inhibitory capability of Ag@Template NCs to bacteria strongly depends on the grain size. Specifically, the Ag@Template-1 NC assembled by the smallest grains (1.6 ± 0.3 nm) presents the best antibacterial activity. For E. coli (-), the MIC value is as low as 5 μg/mL (0.36 μg/mL of Ag), while for S. aureus (+), the value is around 10 μg/mL (0.72 μg/mL of Ag). The survival rate of L02 cells and lactate dehydrogenase assay together illustrate the low cytotoxicity possessed by the prepared Ag@Template NCs. Therefore, the proposed Ag@Template NC structure successfully resolves the high reactivity, instability, and fast oxidation issues of the ultrasmall Ag nanoparticles, and integrates high antibacterial efficiency and nontoxicity to biological cells into one platform, which implies its broad potential application in biomedicine.

Luminescent materials are indispensable for applications in lighting, displays and photovoltaics, which can transfer, absorb, store and utilize light energy. Their performance is closely related with their size and morphologies, exact atomic arrangement, and local configuration about photofunctional centers. Advanced electron microscopy-based techniques have enabled the possibility to study nanostructures with atomic resolution. Especially, with the advanced micro-electro-mechanical systems, it is able to characterize the luminescent materials at the atomic scale under various environments, providing a deep understanding of the luminescent mechanism. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to solar fuel is a promising route to alleviate the ever-growing energy crisis and global warming. Herein, to enhance photoconversion efficiency of CO2 reduction, a series of direct Z-scheme composites consisting of β-AgVO3 nanoribbons and InVO4 nanoparticles (InVO4/β-AgVO3) are prepared via a facile hydrothermal method and subsequent in situ growth process. The prepared InVO4/β-AgVO3 composites exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity for reduction of CO2 to CO under visible-light illumination. A CO evolution rate of 12.61 μmol·g-1·h-1 is achieved over the optimized 20% In-Ag without any cocatalyst or sacrificial agent, which is 11 times larger than that yielded by pure InVO4 (1.12 μmol·g-1·h-1). Moreover, the CO selectivity is more than 93% over H2 production from the side reaction of H2O reduction. Significantly, based on the results of electron spin resonance (ESR) and in situ irradiated XPS tests, it is proposed that the synthesized InVO4/β-AgVO3 catalysts comply with the direct Z-scheme transfer mechanism. Significantly improved photocatalytic activities for selective CO2 reduction could be primarily ascribed to effective separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs and enhanced reducibility of photoelectrons at the conduction band of InVO4. This work provides a new insight for constructing highly efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction systems toward solar fuel generation.

Silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) are explored for the first time as an efficient photocatalyst for visible-light-regulated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The fluorescence quenching confirmed the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between SiQDs and RAFT reagents. Besides all features of controlled radical polymerization, the SiQDs catalyzed PET-RAFT polymerization also exhibit good temporal control, high chain-end fidelity, and versatility with diverse monomers. Moreover, amino-functionalized SiQDs can be easily coated on the surface of substrates (silicon wafer) owing to the electrostatic interaction, and play a dual role of polymer-substrate connector and photocatalyst for the surface-initiated PET-RAFT polymerization. The SiQD-coated wafer was also proved to be an efficient recycle photocatalyst for PET-RAFT polymerization.

We reported the synthesis of a well-defined hollow polymer nanoparticle derived from star-shaped unimolecular micelles. β-Cyclodextrin was first applied as an efficient macroinitiator to prepare a star-shaped PCL via ring-opening polymerization (ROP). Then, the star-shaped PCL was modified to be a macro-RAFT agent for photoinduced electron/energy transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization of S-Cl monomers. The prepared unimolecular micelles can be photocross-linked under UV irradiation after a simple nucleophilic substitution reaction, which made -Cl groups to be -N3 groups. After the selective removal of the PCL core, hollow polymer nanoparticles were achieved and exhibited to be a general nanoreactor strategy for the fabrication of nanocrystals with well-controlled architectures. Compared with unimolecular micelle templates, the nanocrystals prepared by hollow templates are absolutely pure as no polymer chains are embedded in the inorganic nanocrystals. In addition, by changing the concentration of the precursor, the structure of the nanocrystal can be changed from a normal spherical structure to a hollow structure.

With the increasing demand for detection accuracy and sensitivity, dual‐band polarimetric image sensor has attracted considerable attention due to better object recognition by processing signals from diverse wavebands. However, the widespread use of polarimetric sensors is still limited by high noise, narrow photoresponse range, and low linearly dichroic ratio. Recently, the low‐dimensional materials with intrinsic in‐plane anisotropy structure exhibit the great potential to realize direct polarized photodetection. Here, strong anisotropy of 1D layered bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) is demonstrated experimentally and theoretically. The Bi2S3 photodetector exhibits excellent device performance, which enables high photoresponsivity (32 A W−1), Ion/Ioff ratio (1.08 × 104), robust linearly dichroic ratio (1.9), and Hooge parameter (2.0 × 10−5 at 1 Hz) which refer to lower noise than most reported low‐dimensional materials‐based devices. Impressively, such Bi2S3 nanowire exhibits a good broadband photoresponse, ranging from ultraviolet (360 nm) to short‐wave infrared (1064 nm). Direct polarimetric imaging is implemented at the wavelengths of 532 and 808 nm. With these remarkable features, the 1D Bi2S3 nanowires show great potential for direct dual‐band polarimetric image sensors without using any external optical polarizer.

Programmable photoactuation enabled by graphene: Graphene sheets aligned in liquid crystalline elastomers are capable of absorbing near-infrared light. They thereafter act as nanoheaters and provide thermally conductive pathways to trigger the nematic-to-isotropic transition of elastomers, leading to macroscopic mechanical deformation of nanocomposites. Large strain, high actuation force, high initial sensitivity, fast reversible response, and long cyclability are concurrently achieved in nanocomposites.

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) tetrapods were synthesized via multiple injections of the Te precursor by utilizing bifunctional ligands. Subsequently, tetrapod-shaped semiconducting inorganic-organic nanocomposites (i.e., P3HT-CdTe tetrapod nanocomposites) were produced by directly grafting conjugated polymer ethynyl-terminated poly(3-hexylthiophene) (i.e., P3HT-≡) onto azide-functionalized CdTe tetrapods (i.e., CdTe-N3) via a catalyst-free click chemistry. The intimate contact between P3HT and CdTe tetrapod rendered the effective dispersion of CdTe tetrapods in nanocomposites and facilitated their efficient electronic interaction. The success of coupling reaction was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The grafting density of P3HT chains on the CdTe tetrapods was estimated by thermogravimetric analysis. The photophysical properties of P3HT-CdTe tetrapod nanocomposites were studied using UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopies. These intimate semiconducting conjugated polymer-tetrapod nanocomposites may offer a maximized interface between conjugated polymers and tetrapods for efficient charge separation and enhanced charge transport regardless of their orientation for potential application in hybrid solar cells with improved power conversion efficiency.

In situ precision synthesis of monodisperse hairy plasmonic nanoparticles with tailored dimensions and compositions by capitalizing on amphiphilic star-like diblock copolymers as nanoreactors are reported. Such hairy plasmonic nanoparticles comprise uniform noble metal nanoparticles intimately and perpetually capped by hydrophobic polymer chains (i.e., “hairs”) with even length. Interestingly, amphiphilic star-like diblock copolymer nanoreactors retain the spherical shape under reaction conditions, and the diameter of the resulting plasmonic nanoparticles and the thickness of polymer chains situated on the surface of the nanoparticle can be readily and precisely tailored. These hairy nanoparticles can be regarded as hard/soft core/shell nanoparticles. Notably, the polymer “hairs” are directly and permanently tethered to the noble metal nanoparticle surface, thereby preventing the aggregation of nanoparticles and rendering their dissolution in nonpolar solvents and the homogeneous distribution in polymer matrices with long-term stability. This amphiphilic star-like block copolymer nanoreactor-based strategy is viable and robust and conceptually enables the design and synthesis of a rich variety of hairy functional nanoparticles with new horizons for fundamental research on self-assembly and technological applications in plasmonics, catalysis, energy conversion and storage, bioimaging, and biosensors.

Colloidal nanocrystals exhibit a wide range of size- and shape-dependent properties and have found application in myriad fields, incuding optics, electronics, mechanics, drug delivery and catalysis, to name but a few. Synthetic protocols that enable the simple and convenient production of colloidal nanocrystals with controlled size, shape and composition are therefore of key general importance. Current strategies include organic solution-phase synthesis, thermolysis of organometallic precursors, sol-gel processes, hydrothermal reactions and biomimetic and dendrimer templating. Often, however, these procedures require stringent experimental conditions, are difficult to generalize, or necessitate tedious multistep reactions and purification. Recently, linear amphiphilic block co-polymer micelles have been used as templates to synthesize functional nanocrystals, but the thermodynamic instability of these micelles limits the scope of this approach. Here, we report a general strategy for crafting a large variety of functional nanocrystals with precisely controlled dimensions, compositions and architectures by using star-like block co-polymers as nanoreactors. This new class of co-polymers forms unimolecular micelles that are structurally stable, therefore overcoming the intrinsic instability of linear block co-polymer micelles. Our approach enables the facile synthesis of organic solvent- and water-soluble nearly monodisperse nanocrystals with desired composition and architecture, including core-shell and hollow nanostructures. We demonstrate the generality of our approach by describing, as examples, the synthesis of various sizes and architectures of metallic, ferroelectric, magnetic, semiconductor and luminescent colloidal nanocrystals.

Recent advances in the synthesis [ 1 ] and assembly [ 2 ] of nanocrystals (NCs) provide unique opportunities to exploit NCs for the development of next generation organic/inorganic hybrid solar cells as one of the most promising alternatives to Si solar cells to deliver effi cient energy conversion with inexpensive fabrication. [ 1 , 2 ] These conjugated polymer-based photovoltaic devices capitalize on the advantages peculiar to conjugated polymers (CPs), such as light weight, fl exibility, processability, roll-to-roll production, low cost, and large area, in conjunction with the high electron mobility and tunable optical properties of inorganic NCs. Of the organic/inorganic hybrids, poly(3-hexylthiopene) (P3HT) is one of the most extensively utilized CPs due to its excellent solution processability, environmental stability, high charge carrier mobility, and tailorable electrochemical properties. [ 3 , 4 ] CdSe quantum dots (QDs) are the most commonly investigated NCs because of their quantum-confi ned nature and well-matched energy level with P3HT. [ 5–11 ]

Nanocomposites composed of diblock copolymer/ferroelectric nanoparticles were formed by selectively constraining ferroelectric nanoparticles (NPs) within diblock copolymer nanodomains via judicious surface modification of ferroelectric NPs. Ferroelectric barium titanate (BaTiO3) NPs with different sizes that are permanently capped with polystyrene chains (i.e., PS-functionalized BaTiO3NPs) were first synthesized by exploiting amphiphilic unimolecular star-like poly(acrylic acid)-block-polystyrene (PAA-b-PS) diblock copolymers as nanoreactors. Subsequently, PS-functionalized BaTiO3 NPs were preferentially sequestered within PS nanocylinders in the linear cylinder-forming polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) diblock copolymer upon mixing the BaTiO3 NPs with PS-b-PMMA. The use of PS-b-PMMA diblock copolymers, rather than traditional homopolymers, offers the opportunity for controlling the spatial organization of PS-functionalized BaTiO3 NPs in the PS-b-PMMA/BaTiO3 NP nanocomposites. Selective solvent vapor annealing was utilized to control the nanodomain orientation in the nanocomposites. Vertically oriented PS nanocylinders containing PS-functionalized BaTiO3 NPs were yielded after exposing the PS-b-PMMA/BaTiO3 NP nanocomposite thin film to acetone vapor, which is a selective solvent for PMMA block. The dielectric properties of nanocomposites in the microwave frequency range were investigated. The molecular weight of PS-b-PMMA and the size of BaTiO3 NPs were found to exert an apparent influence on the dielectric properties of the resulting nanocomposites.
