From 1974 through 1992 the NAGT Summer Field Course Scholarship Program has helped 1510 students attend summer field camps. A total of $337,600 donated by industry and NAGT members has been awarded. Summary statistics, including an average GPA of 3.71/4.00 for awards and an average acceptance rate of 28% show how selective the program has been. Women have received 36% of the awards. NAGT is about to embark on solicitation to build an endowment fund for the program.

The scientific method with a scientific writing component is emphasized at Dickinson College in introductory geology laboratories in a three-laboratory series on landscape development in the Great Valley of southcentral Pennsylvania. Our pedagogical approach is a hands-on, project-oriented one including data collection and analysis. In laboratory discussions we ask students to develop hypotheses from observations in the field and theory presented in lectures. The students then collect real-time data and/or are given historical data to use as a basis for confirming or rejecting their presuppositions. The writing assignments help the students test their hypotheses using specific examples from the data as justification for the inevitable process of hypothesis modification. The assignments serve to reinforce and clarify geologic relationships observed by students and also help them conceptualize and apply those relationships to other data sets or different landscapes. Forty-eight scholarships of $300 each were awarded from $13,900 donated by four companies, donations from NAGT members, and interest earned. Applicants from 108 colleges and universities competed for these awards.

Sixty-two scholarships of $300 each were awarded from $17,400 donated by five companies and donations from NAGT members. Applications from 146 colleges and universities competed for these awards.
