Energy–structure–property relationships in uranium metal–organic frameworks offer a deeper understanding of their behaviors, explaining why structure produces function. This understanding becomes crucial for the rational design of such materials with enhanced properties.

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), self-assembled from strategically pre-designed molecular tectons with complementary hydrogen-bonding patterns, are rapidly evolving into a novel and important class of porous materials. In addition to their common features shared with other functionalized porous materials constructed from modular building blocks, the intrinsically flexible and reversible H-bonding connections endow HOFs with straightforward purification procedures, high crystallinity, solution processability, and recyclability. These unique advantages of HOFs have attracted considerable attention across a broad range of fields, including gas adsorption and separation, catalysis, chemical sensing, and electrical and optical materials. However, the relatively weak H-bonding interactions within HOFs can potentially limit their stability and potential use in further applications. To that end, this Perspective highlights recent advances in the development of chemically and thermally robust HOF materials and systematically discusses relevant design rules and synthesis strategies to access highly stable HOFs.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) constructed from Zr

One of the most widely employed strategies to produce chiral molecules involves the asymmetric hydrogenation of functionalized olefins using rhodium catalysts. Despite their excellent performance, the exact identity of the active Rh species is still ambiguous as each site may plausibly feature one or two phosphorus ligands. In this work, we used a sequential postsynthetic modification approach to successfully incorporate single-site Rh species into a zirconium-based metal-organic framework comprised of chiral spinol-based ligands. These Rh species feature one phosphorus ligand per Rh, which contrasts with the molecular analogue that contains two phosphorus ligands per Rh site. Following extensive characterization of the Rh-monophosphorus material using techniques including solid-state NMR and extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, we studied their catalytic performance in the asymmetric hydrogenations of enamides and α-dehydroamino acid esters and observed excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 99.9% ee). Notably, the Rh-monophosphorus catalyst is 5 times more active than the homogeneous Rh-biphosphorus control, which we attributed to the higher activity of the single-site Rh-monophosphorus species and the confined MOF cavities that can enrich reactants. In addition, we observed a unique topology-dependent behavior in which linker expansion leads to the formation of a novel Zr-MOF with a distinct 4,8-connected net that cannot be phosphorylated, presumably due to intense tensile strain and steric repulsion present within this framework. Current global crises related to clean energy and the environment entail the development of materials that are capable of addressing these challenges. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of functional materials assembled from metal-containing nodes and organic ligands via coordination bonds, have been successfully developed for various applications, including catalysis, toxic chemical removal, and gas storage and separation, as a result of their highly tailorable nature and precisely engineered pore structures. In particular, the exceptionally high surface areas and porosities of MOFs are two of their most attractive characteristics and place them among the best porous materials for the storage of clean energy gases, such as hydrogen and methane. Reticular chemistry stands out as a prominent approach to the design of MOFs as this strategy allows for the rational top-down design of frameworks guided by topological nets to afford extended framework structures with precise architectural arrangements at the molecular level. Bridging the gap between reticular chemistry design strategies and highly porous MOFs can facilitate the development of next-generation high-performance materials through state-of-the-art chemical design.In this Account, we summarize our group's efforts over the past few years toward the synthesis and applications of highly porous MOFs inspired by reticular chemistry. Since the structure of supramolecular isomers determines their performance, rational synthesis of a specific isomer hinges on understanding the energetic relationships between isomeric possibilities. To this end, we have systematically interrogated a pair of uranium-based metal-organic framework topological isomers both synthetically and through density functional theory (DFT) energetic calculations. Although synthetic and energetic data initially appeared to mismatch, we assigned this phenomenon to the appearance of a metastable isomer, driven by levers defined by Le Châtelier's principle. Summary Energetically driven reduction of porosity through entanglement is ubiquitous in nature and synthetic systems. This entanglement decreases valuable internal pore space useful for applications, such as catalysis, storage, and sensing. Here, we describe the discovery of spontaneous de-interpenetration in a 6-fold interpenetrated uranium-based metal-organic framework (MOF), NU-1303-6. De-interpenetration transforms NU-1303-6 (14.2 and 19.8 A pores) to its larger pore (40.7 A) non-interpenetrated counterpart, which possesses a record-high 96.6% void fraction and 9.2 cm3g−1 pore volume. Density functional theory calculations reveal that charged point-point repulsions between anionic, closely positioned uranium-based nodes drive this phenomenon. These repulsions compete with water molecules that hydrogen bond nearby networks together, favoring interpenetration. Controlling the interplay between these intermolecular forces enables the reversal of omnipresent energetic equilibria, leading to thermodynamically favored open pore structures. The discovery of charged point-point repulsion will likely lead to the re-evaluation of non-interpenetrated network design, synthesis, and wide-reaching applications.

A Np(V) neptunyl metal-organic framework (MOF) with rod-shaped secondary building units was synthesized, characterized, and irradiated with γ rays. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data revealed an anionic framework containing infinite helical chains of actinyl-actinyl interaction (AAI)-connected neptunyl ions linked together through tetratopic tetrahedral organic ligands (NSM). NSM exhibits an unprecedented net, demonstrating that AAIs may be exploited to give new MOFs and new topologies. To probe its radiation stability, we undertook the first irradiation study of a transuranic MOF and its organic linker building block using high doses of γ rays. Diffraction and spectroscopic data demonstrated that the radiation resistance of NSM is greater than that of its linker building block alone. Approximately 6 MGy of irradiation begins to induce notable changes in the long- and short-range order of the framework, whereas 3 MGy of irradiation induces total X-ray amorphization and changes in the local vibrational bands of the linker building block.

Understanding heterogeneous catalysts is a challenging pursuit due to surface site nonuniformity and aperiodicity in traditionally used materials. Understanding and controlling nanomaterial structure, chemistry, and defects represents a synthetic and characterization challenge. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently been explored as unconventional precursors from which to prepare nanomaterials. Here we use in situ X-ray pair distribution function analysis to probe the mechanism through which MOFs transform into nanomaterials during pyrolysis. By comparing a series of bimetallic MOFs with trimeric node different compositions (Fe3, Fe2Co, and Fe2Ni) linked by carboxylate ligands in a PCN-250 lattice, we demonstrate that the resulting nanoparticle structure, chemistry, and defect concentration depend on the node chemistry of the original MOF. These results suggest that the preorganized structure and chemistry of the MOF offer new potential control over the nanomaterial synthesis under mild reaction conditions. In the case of Fe2Ni-PCN-250, selective extraction of one Ni ion from each node without collapsing the framework (i.e., node-ligand connectivity) leaves a metal-deficient MOF state that may provide a new route to post-synthetically tune the chemistry the MOF and subsequent nanomaterials.

The hydrogenation of waste gas carbon dioxide into value added molecules could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and our dependence on nonrenewable energy sources. Catalytic paths toward this goal typically involve high pressures and low abundance transition metal catalysts. Here, we have found that vacancies induced in defect-laden hexagonal boron nitride (dh-BN) can effectively activate the CO₂ molecule for hydrogenation. Subsequent hydrogenation to formic acid (HCOOH) and methanol (CH₃OH) occur through vacancy facilitated coadsorption of hydrogen and CO₂. More importantly, we find that dh-BN catalyzes formic acid formation observable at reaction temperatures above 160 °C and pressures of 583 kPa, while methanol formation is observed at lower temperatures (as low as 20 °C). Methanol formation occurs with a TOF of 1.52 × 10–² s–¹ and TON of 289 at 20 °C. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a major greenhouse gas and the main component of all combustion products produced in power generation and transportation. In addition, boron and nitrogen are abundant elements and thus, catalysts prepared from h-BN would allow catalytic recovery of value-added molecules facilitating efforts to reduce the emissions of this gas.

International audience; Interpenetration of two or more sublattices is common among many metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, we study the evolution of one zirconium cluster-based, 3,8-connected MOF from its non-interpenetrated (NU-1200) to interpenetrated (STA-26) isomer. We observe this transient catenation process indirectly using ensemble methods, such as nitrogen porosimetry and X-ray diffraction, and directly, using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The approach detailed here will serve as a template for other researchers to monitor the interpenetration of their MOF samples at the bulk and single-particle limits. We investigate the mechanical stability of both lattices experimentally by pressurized in situ X-ray diffraction and nanoindentation as well as computationally with density functional theory calculations. Both lines of study reveal that STA-26 is considerably more mechanically stable than NU-1200. We conclude this study by demonstrating the potential of these MOFs and their mixed phases for the capture of gaseous n-hexane, used as a structural mimic for the chemical warfare agent sulfur mustard gas.

The quest for new and unique polynuclear metal-oxocarboxylate clusters has led to a continual boom of highly connected and robust metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with intriguing properties. In this work, by virtue of a highly specific coordination-driven cluster rearrangement process of a presynthesized trinuclear zirconocene-based tripodal metallo-pyridine ligand, we realized the preparation of the first two 2D heterometallic MOFs incorporating unprecedented Johnson-type (J51) nonanuclear Zr-oxocarboxylate clusters, as unambiguously uncovered by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The resultant two charged frameworks feature counteranion-dependent 3,6-c kgd (JMOF-1) and 3,12-c 3,12L4 (JMOF-2) nets that are formed by octahedral and hexagonal prismatic Zr9 molecular building blocks (MBBs), respectively. In addition, JMOF-2 shows promise for the purification of acetylene from CO2 and C2H4, with IAST selectivities of about 12 and 8, respectively, at 298 K and 1 bar, as well as remarkable iodine capture capacity of up to 2.4 g g-1.

Summary Zr-carboxylate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are structurally robust materials, in part due to their strong coordination bonds. The regioselective Zr–O bond cleavage and formation between 3D architectures are thus challenging and are heretofore unexplored. In this work, by introducing highly flexible 18-crown-6-ether functionalities into a homochiral Zr-MOF, we report an unprecedented topology transition in which a 4,10-connected framework undergoes a rapid solid-state transition into a thermodynamically more stable 4,8-connected analog by a regioselective-linker-elimination under ambient conditions. The transition process was unambiguously unraveled by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction studies, and we proposed a possible transition mechanism based on various control experiments and theoretical calculations. The excellent chemical stability and substantially expanded porosity and pore apertures endowed the transformed chiral MOF with an exceptional capacity for the enantioadsorptive and solid-phase extractive separation of the racemic drug molecule of lansoprazole with 98% ee and 93% ee, respectively.

Mechanochemistry enables rapid access to boron imidazolate frameworks (BIFs), including ultralight materials based on Li and Cu(i) nodes, as well as new, previously unexplored systems based on Ag(i) nodes. Compared to solution methods, mechanochemistry is faster, provides materials with improved porosity, and replaces harsh reactants (e.g. n-butylithium) with simpler and safer oxides, carbonates or hydroxides. Proteins immobilized in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) often show extraordinary stability. However, most efforts to immobilize proteins in MOFs have only been exploratory. Herein, we present the first systematic study on the thermodynamics of protein immobilization in MOFs. Using insulin as a probe, we leveraged isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) to investigate how topology, pore size, and hydrophobicity of MOFs influence immobilization. ITC data obtained from the encapsulation of insulin in a series of Zr-MOFs reveals that MOFs provide proteins with a hydrophobic stabilizing microenvironment, making the encapsulation entropically driven. In particular, the pyrene-based NU-1000 tightly encapsulates insulin in its ideally sized mesopores and stabilizes insulin through π-π stacking interactions, resulting in the most enthalpically favored encapsulation process among this series. This study reveals critical insights into the structure-property relationships of protein immobilization.

The encapsulation of enzymes within porous materials has shown great promise, not only in protecting the enzymes from denaturation under nonbiological environments, but also, in some cases, in facilitating their enzymatic reaction rates at favorable reaction conditions. While a number of hypotheses have been developed to explain this phenomenon, the detailed structural changes of the enzymes upon encapsulation within the porous material, which are closely related to their activity, remain largely elusive. Herein, the structural change of cytochrome c (Cyt c) upon encapsulation within a hierarchical metal-organic framework, NU-1000, is investigated through a combination of experimental and computational methods, such as electron paramagnetic resonance, solid-state ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and all-atom explicit solvent molecular dynamics simulations. The enhanced catalytic performance of Cyt c after being encapsulated within NU-1000 is supported by the physical and in silico observations of a change around the heme ferric active center.
