Recently, an advanced stem cell and tissue engineering approach has been recognized as an emerging and fascinating strategy to promote neural repair in spinal cord injury (SCI). Hydrogels can be properly engineered to encapsulate cells, enhance cell viability and neural differentiation, and provide the advantage of flexible adaptation to irregular defects. In this study, a dual-enzymatically cross-linked gelatin hydrogel with hydrogen horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and galactose oxidase (GalOx) was proposed to combine human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) for facilitating nerve regeneration post-SCI. In vitro, hUC-MSCs in this 3D gelatin hydrogel displayed good viability, proliferation, and neuronal differentiation. To further evaluate the neural regeneration effect of hUC-MSCs loaded into gelatin hydrogels in vivo, a clinically-relevant and force-controlled contusion model of mouse spinal cords was established. We found that implantation of a hydrogel loaded with hUC-MSCs significantly promoted the motor function recovery evaluated by Basso Mouse Scale (BMS) and footprint tests. Further histological analysis showed that the hydrogel and hUC-MSC combined transplantation dramatically decreased inflammation, inhibited apoptosis and promoted neurogenesis. Overall, implantation of this dual-enzymatically cross-linked and MSC-laden 3D gelatin hydrogel is a promising therapeutic strategy for SCI treatment.

Biosurfactants based on carbohydrates are of special interest because of their production from renewable resources, nontoxicity, biocompatibility, and environmental friendliness. Dodecyl polyglucosides, a type of nonionic surfactant synthesized with methyl polyglucosides obtained from the eco-friendly subcritical methanolysis of renewable resource of starch, is no doubt good for ecosystem. With the subcritical methanolysis of starch, the methyl polyglucosides were obtained without any catalyst. Under the reaction condition of the weight ratio of methanol to starch of 7.5, temperature of 220 °C, and reaction time of 2 h, the yield of methyl polyglucosides was 85%. Dodecyl polyglucosides were synthesized by transglycosidation with methyl polyglucosides, and the green nonionic surfactant has excellent surface activity. The critical micelle concentration and hydrophilic lipophilic balance are 0.022 wt % and 12, respectively.

Eu-doped ZnO nanosheets were synthesized via a facile and surfactant-free chemical solution deposition method. The detailed characterizations revealed that the as-synthesized samples were well-crystalline which assembled by nanosheets with 25 nm thickness. The Eu ions were successfully doped into the ZnO nanosheets, and the red emissions of Eu3+ ions attributed to the energy of 5D0→7F0, 5D0→7F1 and 5D0→7F2 4f–4f intrashell transitions were observed in PL spectra. The appropriate Eu doping would increase the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs and promote the formation of the superoxide ions during the photolysis process, which eventually improved the photodegradation of Rhodamine B under UV light irradiation. And the photocatalytic degradation of RhB was also analyzed by a pseudo first order rate. A possible explanation for the modification of bandgap was given based on the modified effect of Eu3+ ions on the electronic structure of ZnO nanosheets, which mainly due to two mechanisms of Burstein-Moss effect and electron-ion/electron scattering.

Recently, in situ formed injectable hydrogels have shown great potential in biomedical applications as therapeutic implants or carriers in tissue repair and regeneration. They can seal or fill the damaged tissue to function as cell/drug delivery vehicle perfectly through a minimally invasive surgical procedure. In this study, hyaluronic acid (HA) is functionalized with tyramine to produce an injectable hydrogel dual-enzymatically crosslinked by horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and galactose oxidase (GalOX). This new tyramine-modified HA (HT) hydrogel exhibited good injectability, favorable cytocompatibility to mice bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), and low inflammatory response verified by cytotoxicity assay in vitro and an in situ subcutaneous injection study in vivo. In addition, the gelation time, swelling behavior, and degradation rate of the HT hydrogel could be adjusted through varying the concentrations of HT and GalOX in a certain range. These encouraging results suggest that such biocompatible HT hydrogels might have potential application in three-dimensional stem cell culture and tissue engineering.

The dual-ion battery (DIB) system has attracted great attention owing to its merits of low cost, high energy, and environmental friendliness. However, the DIBs based on sodium-ion electrolytes are seldom reported due to the lack of appropriate anode materials for reversible Na+ insertion/extraction. Herein, a new sodium-ion based DIB named as MoS2 /C-G DIB using penne-like MoS2 /C nanotube as anode and expanded graphite as cathode is constructed and optimized for the first time. The hierarchical MoS2 /C nanotube provides expanded (002) interlayer spacing of 2H-MoS2 , which facilitates fast Na+ insertion/extraction reaction kinetics, thus contributing to improved DIB performance. The MoS2 /C-G DIB delivers a reversible capacity of 65 mA h g-1 at 2 C in the voltage window of 1.0-4.0 V, with good cycling performance for 200 cycles and 85% capacity retention, indicating the feasibility of potential applications for sodium-ion based DIBs.

LMR spectra for v=1←0 transitions of14N16O in X2II1/2, 3/2 states were observed at 5.6 μm and 5.4 μm of CO laser. Introducing the advanced isotopic molecular constant scaling function to Hund’s case (a) diatomic structure model, these spectra were analyzed and fitted together with all reliable previous spectral data of14N16O as well as14N17O and14N18O. A full set of precise molecular parameters and their vibrational dependencies have been determined with much higher precision (1–2 orders for most parameters). Many of them have been obtained for the first time. Using isotopic scaling function, the molecular constants of14N17O and14N18O were deduced.
