This article explores the ways in which Salón de belleza (1999) by Mario Bellatin suspends the rules of gender. Through a reading that emphasizes a destabilization of the heteronormative binary, I propose that the text is narrated by a trans subject, who oscillates and alters the identitarian logic, and who unveils how transvestism operates as an alternative worldbuilding strategy. Through Jack Halberstam's contention of transness and Marlene Wayar's vision of a travesti-trans theory, this article culminates in thinking of other means of imagining worldly possibilities, wherein trans and travesti life can mobilize and reconfigure the social sphere. In this anthropological research a description and analysis of performative bodily practices is carried out by young people who subscribe to diverse sexual orientations within the framework of the contest "Our Gay Beauty Cárdenas", which is held every year during the month of July in the rural community of Cárdenas, located in the middle of the state of San Luis Potosí, México. The methodology implemented corresponds to an ethnographic work carried out through observation-participant which allowed me to carry out a visual and narrative record on the performative and transformational practices carried out by Julian and Raymundo two of the participants of that Beauty Contest. The bodily transformations are carried out by the participants from various bodily practices that they have called under the concept of "tricks", through which they obtain highly feminized faces and bodies. That is why the conclusion of such research suggests that within such bodily practices they consciously or unconsciously reproduce hegemonic body patterns. In this case, the beauty pageant reproduces performative practices oriented to the reproduction of female models idealized and standardized by the sociocultural context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

La novela de Vicente Luis Mora, Centroeuropa (2020), Premio Málaga de Novela 2019, ha acaparado la atención de la crítica literaria, principalmente, por su reflexión sobre el marco de valores en el contexto europeo de finales del siglo XVIII y principios del siglo XIX. En este trabajo, se analiza el rol de los personajes femeninos y roles de género incluidos en la novela, tanto el de la protagonista, quien se nos presenta camuflada bajo una identidad masculina, como el de otros personajes relevantes en la reflexión del autor acerca de la situación de la mujer en el contexto de la época. A través de este trabajo abordamos la singularidad de estas voces, así como los posibles aspectos que se podrían inferir de su narración en torno a la cuestión del género y la identidad, enfocado desde la actual perspectiva de la “nueva masculinidad”., The attention of literary critics has been attracted by Vicente Luis Mora's novel, Centroeuropa (2020), which was the winner of the Malaga Novel Prize 2019, mainly for its reflection on the framework of values in the European context of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In this article, the situation of women in those years will be analyzed through the role of the female characters and the gender roles included in the novel, including the protagonist, who is presented to us camouflaged under a male identity, and other relevant female characters. Through this article, the singularity of these voices will be approached via the current perspective of the "new masculinity", as well as the possible aspects that could be inferred from their stories around the question of gender and identity.

Saladin d'Anglure on his text From foetus to shaman: the construction of an Inuit 'third sex', explores the Inuit concept of a third sex as a concept that comes to stress the limits of the Western gender binary categories; that scheme that divides and opposes the feminine to the masculine. This category of a third sex is sustained through various paradigms and social practices among the Inuits, precisely designed to name the third sex and thereby to give it a place and cultural acceptance. Thus, the existence of a tertiary paradigm glimpsed in Inuit society, regarding the gender binary known in the West, allows us to rethink the cultural definitions of transgender, transvestism and shamanism. This approach expresses an ontogenetic model (concerning the conditions of existence and development of the singular individual) and a phylogenetic model (since it makes reference, from a cultural perspective, to the forms of social transmission between different generations), particular from the Inuit perspective, that places this Inuit third sex in a singular temporal- spatial context, posing it as an insterstitial figure between man and woman, between the feminine and the masculine. This article explores the concepts of cross dressing and gender performativity through the conceptualization of queer studies, exemplifying them with successive stagings of The Maids, by Jean Genet. El travestimiento y las identidades queer son temas obviados y desentendidos por la crítica literaria que la novela Carnaval de Sodoma (2002), del escritor dominicano Pedro Antonio Valdez, ha merecido hasta el momento. A través del surgimiento de tres personajes travestidos de la obra —Tora, el Barón del cementerio-La Fortunata y Changsán- Princesa de Jade— examinaremos cómo la acción travesti desestabiliza el imaginario de naturalización y de complementariedad que el discurso normativo ha asignado a los géneros tradicionales (masculino/femenino), y repensaremos nociones como género y sexualidad, comúnmente establecidas por el pensamiento heterocentrado como entidades fijas e inmutables. Cross-dressing and queer identities constitute themes that are ignored and neglected by the literary critic that the novel Carnaval de Sodoma (2002), by Dominican writer Pedro Antonio Valdez has had until now. We will analyze three transvestite characters —Tora, the Baron of the graveyard-La Fortunata and Changsán-Princess of Jade— and examine how the transvestite action destabilize the naturalization and complementarization imaginary that the normative discourse has assigned to the traditional genders (masculine/femenine). We will rethink notions such as gender and sexuality, usually established by the heterocentered thought as fixe and immutable entities.

Mediante uma perspectiva de gênero, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo investigar as especificidades da homossexualidade feminina no encarceramento. Pela análise do discurso de entrevistas realizadas com duas mulheres encarceradas em uma unidade prisional feminina, trataremos dos significados atrelados ao "se transformar em homem" na prisão. As duas entrevistadas assumiram, dentro do cárcere, posturas, nomes e aparência masculinas e passaram, desde então, a ser reconhecidas por outras internas e pelo próprio staff do presídio como homens. O objetivo é entender que tipos de privilégios tais mulheres adquirem como resultado da adoção de padrões de comportamentos tipicamente masculinos. Os resultados atestam que as duas participantes experimentam o status e os direitos usualmente associados ao masculino, tais como a poligamia e o uso legitimado da força, reproduzindo no espaço intramuros a organização hierárquica que marca as relações heterossexuais na sociedade mais ampla.A través de una perspectiva de género, el presente estudio tiene como objetivo investigar las especificidades de la homosexualidad femenina en el encarcelamiento. Por medio del análisis del discurso de entrevistas realizadas con dos mujeres encarceladas en una unidad carcelaria femenina, trataremos de los significados vinculados al "transformarse en hombre" en la cárcel. Las dos entrevistadas asumieron, dentro de la cárcel, posturas, nombres y apariencia masculinos y pasaron, a partir de ahí, a seren reconocidas por otras internas y por propio staff de la cárcel como hombres. El objetivo es entender que tipos de privilegios esas mujeres adquieren como resultado de la adopción de patrones de comportamientos típicamente masculinos. Los resultados muestran que las dos participantes experimentan el status y los derechos usualmente asociados al masculino, tales y como la poligamia y el uso legitimado de la fuerza, reproduciendo en el espacio intramuros la organización jerárquica que marca las relaciones heterosexuales en la sociedad más amplia.From a gender approach, the present work has the goal of investigating the specificities of female homosexuality in prison. From the discursive analysis of interviews conducted with two incarcerated women, we investigate the meanings associated to the experience of "becoming a man" in prison. In prison, the two participants assumed male names and looks, being recognized by other inmates and by the prison staff as men. The goal is to understand the kind of privileges these women acquire as the result of adopting typical male behaviors in prison. Results show that the two participants experience the status and the rights usually associated to men, such as polygamy and the legitimized use of force, reproducing in prison the hierarchical organization that characterize heterosexual relationships in society.

This thesis is an analysis of the novel Orlando, published by Virginia Woolf in 1928. This work is studied as a critical-reflexive text, involving issues of gender, clothing, fashion and gender stereotypes. For this purpose, key parts of the novel in which the protagonist transgresses social conventions through specific uses of clothing, including transvestism, are studied. Likewise, the incidence of these changes of clothing, that are also changes of social and gender role, are studied as transgressions to the normativity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A pesquisa calcou-se nas perspectivas cartográficas, na arqueo-genealogia e na pesquisa interferência como referenciais para abordar e tensionar as discursividades constituintes dos gêneros considerados não inteligíveis. O campo de inserção foi o Consultório na Rua e a Casa sem Preconceitos — serviços de acolhida a pessoas travestis e transexuais em Campinas. Buscou-se, a partir dos relatos de campo, intermediados pelas técnicas de diário de campo e pelas leituras pós-estruturalistas acerca do poder, saber, verdade e performance, visibilizar a produção subjetiva destas mulheres e como esta relação se materializa em seu cotidiano, bem como desvelar suas respectivas produções de cuidado na relação com o SUS e a partir da produção do comum Abstract: This master's thesis is part of qualitative health research and focuses on the lives of transsexual and transvestite women living on the streets in the city of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. The research was based on the cartographic perspectives, on the archeo-genealogy and on the interference research as references to address and tension the constituent discursivities of the genres considered unintelligible. The field of insertion was the ?Consultório na Rua? and the ?Casa sem Preconceitos? — reception services for transvestites and transsexuals in Campinas. La expresión «mozos bonitos» tuvo múltiples sentidos y circuló en periódicos brasileños en la primera mitad del siglo XX. Junto con otros sentidos, fue referencia para el afeminamiento, la homosexualidad, el travestismo, el transformismo y la prostitución masculina. En este trabajo, el autor registra la existencia de algunos varones que se identificaron e incorporaron nombres, indumentaria, maquillaje y actitudes de mujeres, prostitutas y artistas mujeres. Junto con la consideración de textos de especialistas en homosexualidad de la época, se comentan los usos de las voces «almohadilla» (almofadinha), «travesti» y «transformista»., The expession «pretty boys» had multiple meanings and circulated in Brazilian newspapers in the first half of the twentieth century. Along with other senses, it was a reference for effeminacy, homosexuality, transvestism, transformism and male prostitution. In this work, the author records the existence of some men who identified themselves and incorporated the names, clothing, makeup, and attitudes of women, prostitutes, and female artists. Resumen El presente artículo aborda los discursos producidos por el campo médico argentino en torno a las iniciativas de corporización de travestis y transexuales en Argentina entre 1971 y 1982. A través del relevamiento y análisis de una selección de artículos publicados en revistas académicas de medicina, se analizan los sentidos que profesionales de la salud asignaron a las mismas antes de la producción de fallos judiciales y normativas nacionales que reconocen la identidad de género como un derecho humano. El análisis realizado permite identificar las particularidades que asumían dichas iniciativas de corporización en el período de estudio, así como las formas en las que el campo médico argentino les imprimió sentidos morales, técnicos y profesionales. Abstract This article deals with the discourses produced by the Argentine medical field relating to body transformation initiatives on the part of transvestites and transsexuals in Argentina from 1971-1982. Based on the compilation and analysis of a set of articles published in academic medical journals, it examines the meanings that health professionals assigned to these initiatives prior to the legal rulings and national legislation that recognized gender identity as a human right. This analysis helps identify the particular features of those body transformation initiatives during the period studied, as well as the ways in which the medical field in Argentina attached moral, technical and professional meanings to them.

URL del artículo en la web de la Revista: https://www.upo.es/revistas/index.php/ambigua/article/view/4341, The Convent of Pleasures (1668) es un closet drama de Margaret Cavendish, Duquesa de Newcastle (1627-1674) literata, filósofa y pionera de la divulgación científica cuya trama se centra en la decisión de una bella y virtuosa joven de fundar un Convento que celebre el placer de los sentidos, de la vida contemplativa y el aprendizaje entre congéneres. Entendemos que esta obra constituye una reflexión sobre las condiciones de vida y posibilidades de acceso al saber femeninos encuadrable en un ámbito discursivo que planteaba el dilema entre el retiro monástico como condición de la sabiduría y el rol asignado a las mujeres, esencialmente el matrimonio y la maternidad. Esta pieza recrea lúdicamente ambas opciones. Por un lado presenta el retiro como lo opuesto al ascetismo y la soledad, siendo la amistad entre mujeres la via regia hacia la filosofía y la ciencia. Por otro plantea las condiciones del posible matrimonio propicio a la sabiduría femenina a través del travestismo. Nuestro acercamiento buscará establecer las conexiones entre esta obra y las numerosas reflexiones de Cavendish sobre la cuestión femenina en otros textos, conjeturando que el carácter especialmente recreativo pero radical de la presentación de las opciones femeninas en The Convent of Pleasures puede vincularse con el contexto más libre y acotado del closet drama, que permite a la autora ofrecer un desenlace que recrea humorísticamente las convenciones del género., The Convent of Pleasure (1668) is a closet drama written by Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle (1627-1674) focused on a beautiful heiress¿ decision to found a Convent which celebrates pleasure. From the recovery of its insertion in the author¿s corpus as well as considering it an answer to the dilemma over ascetic withdrawal as a condition of feminine wisdom and marriage, we conjecture that stylistic freedom of the piece of literature allows the recreation subversively of both alternatives and integrates them to the development of recurrent themes in Cavendish¿s work in a radical and playful way. We show from gender theory how this literary work represents the withdrawal as opposed to asceticism and solitude, being friendship among women the privileged path toward an inaccessible pleasure for those positioned within the patriarchy. We point out that the playful character also enables visibility strategies intended to contrast unhappiness of married women with legitimacy and naturalness of lesbian love between the heroin and the Princess, as well as topic variations about social conditioning and female ability. Then we discuss the outcome of the work, the heroin marriage, constitutes a tradition defence. We also argue, on the other hand, the literacy resource taken from Shakespeare through which the Princess turns out to be a Prince, which depicts a creative redistribution of sexual models and challenges patriarchal hierarchy, interpretation that we link with the author¿s reflections about male fitness for marriage. Finally, we show how the final scenes, focused on the character of the jester Mimick, point to legitimize Cavendish¿s aspiration to be included in the literary tradition through humorous reflection about the topics displayed and the verbal frameworks to categorize them., Universidad Pablo de Olavide

El nacionalismo mexicano ha intentado fijar identidades arraigadas fuertemente en la música y los bailes populares transformándolos en estampas folclóricas basadas en la pareja heterosexual, hombres sobrios de fuertes movimientos al lado de mujeres ataviadas con trajes de colores, hermosas y sonrientes, como si fueran la imagen de la patria. Cada que aparezca la típica postal de los ballets folclóricos de México habría que recordar que detrás de esas danzas y esos cuerpos están las heridas abiertas de este país. En las siguientes páginas desmontamos el entramado nacionalista que conlleva el uso de metáforas biológicas como las de la raza y el género. Para cuestionar la puesta en escena de lo popular proponemos imágenes divergentes y travestismos folks, demostrando que el género es intencional y performativo o, con palabras de Butler, que todo género está travestido. Mexican nationalism has attempted to fix identities, firmly entrenched in music and popular dances, transforming them into folklore vignettes based on heterosexual couples —frugal men with strong movements, along with beautiful, smiling women dressed up in colourful dresses—, as the image of the fatherland. Each time that we see the typical Mexican folk ballet postcard, we should remember that, behind those dances and those bodies, lay the country’s open wounds. In the following pages, we will dismantle the nationalist framework that implies the use of biological metaphors, such as race and gender. In order to question the staging of popular culture, we propose divergent images and folk cross-dressings, proving that gender is intentional and performative or, in Butler’s words, that every gender implies cross-dressing.

La pieza titulada Yo Scheherazade es el resultado de un proceso de dos años en el que luego de haber encontrado una pieza musical arabizada ‘Sheherazade and the Golden Slave’ se despierta en mi un interés genuino en reflexionar sobre mi quehacer como bailarín de danzas orientales y situarme frente a la pregunta por la representación de una cultura extranjera iniciando un acercamiento a la pieza musical Scheherazade de Rimsky Korsakov escrita en 1888 y llevada al ballet luego en 1910. Desde allí, aparece la pregunta por el orientalismo y el acercamiento a los trabajos de Edward Said, Fatema Mernissi, Judith Butler y Rafael Cansinos Assens, quienes develan las diferentes capas presentes en la construcción de la identidad, bien sea esta cultural, nacional, sexual o de género. Sus indagaciones me acompañaron en una ruta que me llevó a preguntas como la siguiente: ¿Qué es lo que debe morir para que lo vivo aparezca?. Las correspondientes intervenciones que desde el cuerpo fueron llevándome a la exploración de lo íntimo, la desnudez y la reflexión sobre la presencia, el cuerpo en relación al espectador y la fragilidad de lo humano y lo vivo. Abstract. The piece titled ‘Yo Scheherazade’ is the result of a two-year process in which, after having found the Arabian musical piece 'Sheherazade and the Golden Slave', a genuine interest in reflecting on my work as a dancer of oriental dances and placing myself to the question of the representation of a foreign culture awakes in me, beginning with an approach to the musical piece ‘Scheherazade’ by Rimsky Korsakov, written in 1888 and played in ballet in 1910. From there, the question about orientalism and the approach to the works of Edward Said, Fatema Mernissi, Judith Butler and Rafael Cansinos Assens, who unveil the different layers present in the construction of identity either cultural, national, sexual or about gender, arises. Their inquiries accompanied me on a route that led me to questions such as: What is it that must die so the living appears? The corresponding interventions from the body were leading me to the exploration of the intimate, the nudity and the reflection on the presence, the body in relation to the spectator, and the fragility of the human and the living. Se reflexiona sobre los conceptos de travestismo y performatividad de género mediante la lente de los estudios queer, ejemplificando con sucesivas puestas en escena de Las Criadas de Jean Genet. Se trata de teatro producido por argentinos, en Buenos Aires y algunas otras ciudades del mundo, cuyo factor común reside no sólo en el texto dramático sino en los cuestionamientos a la idea de la representación. Los directores S. Renán, V. García, A. Arias y C. Zorzoli problematizan esta idea y nos permiten pensar la desestabilización operada por Las Criadas. This article explores the concepts of cross dressing and gender performativity through the conceptualization of queer studies, exemplifying them with successive stagings of The Maids, by Jean Genet. It focuses specifically on Argentine directors, whose common feature lies not only in the dramatic text but in objections to the idea of representation, as Genet suggests in his text. S. Renán, V. García, A. Arias and C. Zorzoli problematise this idea, with each new staging, and allow us to reflect on the destabilization operated by The Maids. L’auteur se propose d’examiner les concepts de travestissement et de performativité du genre, au regard des études queer, en s’appuyant sur des mises en scène de Les Bonnes de Genet. Il s’agit de spectacles produits par des argentins, à Buenos Aires et dans d’autres ville du monde, dont le socle commun réside non seulement dans le texte dramatique mais aussi dans la remise en question de la représentation. El análisis presentado tiene dos vertientes que están intrínsecamente ligadas. Por un lado, se ofrece la teoría que le subyace a la construcción del sujeto femenino, y su relación con el patriarcado, en la obra Los soles truncos del dramaturgo clásico puertorriqueño René Marqués. Y, por otro, se escenifica en una lectura teatralizada la construcción de sus sujetos femeninos en clave queer/travesti: ejercicio de experimentación que saca a flote su transfiguración discursiva deslizando sus márgenes y sus fronteras. La segunda parte de este artículo se centra, pues, en las problemáticas de una representación alternativa de la pieza., The scope of this article has two intertwined sides. First it offers the underlying theory about the construction of a feminine subject and its relation to patriarchy in the play Los Soles Truncos from the Puerto Rican classic writer René Marqués. Secondly, the construction of the female subjects is staged in a theatrical reading on a transvestite/queer approach. This experimentation process brings out its discursive transfiguration, disrupting its margins and borders. The second part of this article focuses on the problematics of an alternative representation of the play., L'anàlisi presentat té dues vessants que estan intrínsecament lligades. D'una banda, s'ofereix la teoria que li subjau a la construcció del subjecte femení, i la seva relació amb el patriarcat, en l'obra Els sols truncos del dramaturg clàssic porto-riqueny René Marquès. I, de l'altra, s'escenifica en una lectura teatralitzada la construcció dels seus subjectes femenins en clau queer / travesti: exercici d'experimentació que treu a flotació la seva transfiguració discursiva lliscant els seus marges i les seves fronteres. La segona part d'aquest article se centra, doncs, en les problemàtiques d'una representació alternativa de la peça.

Mediante uma perspectiva de gênero, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo investigar as especificidades da homossexualidade feminina no encarceramento. Pela análise do discurso de entrevistas realizadas com duas mulheres encarceradas em uma unidade prisional feminina, trataremos dos significados atrelados ao "se transformar em homem" na prisão. As duas entrevistadas assumiram, dentro do cárcere, posturas, nomes e aparência masculinas e passaram, desde então, a ser reconhecidas por outras internas e pelo próprio staff do presídio como homens. O objetivo é entender que tipos de privilégios tais mulheres adquirem como resultado da adoção de padrões de comportamentos tipicamente masculinos. Os resultados atestam que as duas participantes experimentam o status e os direitos usualmente associados ao masculino, tais como a poligamia e o uso legitimado da força, reproduzindo no espaço intramuros a organização hierárquica que marca as relações heterossexuais na sociedade mais ampla. From a gender approach, the present work has the goal of investigating the specificities of female homosexuality in prison. From the discursive analysis of interviews conducted with two incarcerated women, we investigate the meanings associated to the experience of "becoming a man" in prison. In prison, the two participants assumed male names and looks, being recognized by other inmates and by the prison staff as men. The goal is to understand the kind of privileges these women acquire as the result of adopting typical male behaviors in prison. Results show that the two participants experience the status and the rights usually associated to men, such as polygamy and the legitimized use of force, reproducing in prison the hierarchical organization that characterize heterosexual relationships in society. A través de una perspectiva de género, el presente estudio tiene como objetivo investigar las especificidades de la homosexualidad femenina en el encarcelamiento. Por medio del análisis del discurso de entrevistas realizadas con dos mujeres encarceladas en una unidad carcelaria femenina, trataremos de los significados vinculados al "transformarse en hombre" en la cárcel. Las dos entrevistadas asumieron, dentro de la cárcel, posturas, nombres y apariencia masculinos y pasaron, a partir de ahí, a seren reconocidas por otras internas y por propio staff de la cárcel como hombres. El objetivo es entender que tipos de privilegios esas mujeres adquieren como resultado de la adopción de patrones de comportamientos típicamente masculinos. Los resultados muestran que las dos participantes experimentan el status y los derechos usualmente asociados al masculino, tales y como la poligamia y el uso legitimado de la fuerza, reproduciendo en el espacio intramuros la organización jerárquica que marca las relaciones heterosexuales en la sociedad más amplia.

Este trabajo propone un recorrido por el singular universo narrativo de Naty Menstrual, primera escritora autodefinida como travesti publicada en Argentina. En los cuentos de su primer libro, Continuadísimo (2008), la autora presenta un mundo que invierte las reglas y los valores —sociales, culturales, sexuales— tradicionales. La reflexión se articulará, en consecuencia, en torno a las inversiones que se manifiestan en los relatos —inversiones del concepto de familia, de los roles y prácticas sexuales, de la actitud frente al sida— y en su construcción como objeto lingüístico a partir de las teorías queer y de los estudios trans. El análisis del lenguaje empleado —crudo y violento— y de las imágenes proyectadas —ligadas a lo abyecto y repugnante— tendrá como objetivo mostrar el particular modo en que Menstrual construye el margen desde y sobre el cual escribe., This work offers a journey through the singular narrative universe of Naty Menstrual, the first self-defined transvestite writer published in Argentina. In her first book of short stories, Continuadísimo (2008), the author presents a world that changes traditional —social, cultural, and sexual— rules and values. In consequence, this article will reflect on the inversions that are manifested in the stories —inversions of the concept of family, of roles and sexual practices, of the attitude toward AIDS— and in her own construction as a linguistic object in the light of queer theories and trans studies. The language employed —crude and violent— and the images portrayed —which are linked to abjection and repugnance— will be analyzed to show the particular way in which Menstrual constructs the margin that positions her writing and gives shape to her stories.
