Background: Hegemonic masculinity has been recognized as contributing to the perpetration of different forms of gender-based violence (GBV). Abandoning hegemonic masculinities and promoting positive masculinities are both strategies used by interventions that foreground a "gender-transformative approach." Preventing GBV among young people could be strengthened by engaging young men. In this article, we aim to systematically review the primary characteristics, methodological quality, and results of published evaluation studies of educational interventions that aim to prevent different forms of GBV through addressing hegemonic masculinities among young people. Main body: We conducted a systematic review of available literature (2008–2019) using Medline (PubMed), Scopus, Web of Science, PsycInfo, the CINAHL Complete Database, and ERIC as well as Google scholar. The Template for Intervention Description and Replication was used for data extraction, and the quality of the selected studies was analyzed using the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool. More than half of the studies were conducted in Africa (n = 10/15) and many were randomized controlled trials (n = 8/15). Most of the studies with quantitative and qualitative methodologies (n = 12/15) reported a decrease in physical GBV and/or sexual violence perpetration/victimization (n = 6/15). Longitudinal studies reported consistent results over time. Conclusions: Our results highlight the importance of using a gender-transformative approach in educational interventions to engage young people in critical thinking about hegemonic masculinity and to prevent GBV. The advances made in incorporating a gender approach into public health policies have stimulated growing interest in the social mechanisms of the study of men's health. Therefore, a more experiential, gender-based analysis that allows for a better understanding of how ill-health processes and exposure to risk factors are related is required. In this paper, based on a rapid review, we focus on the daily circumstances, critical events and social practices in which masculinities become (re)defined during different stages of the life cycle. Our results highlight the dynamics between workplace and family contexts, calling attention to the impact of the male breadwinner model, which acts as a gendered social structure with implications for other factors (including age, social class, disability and marital status) that characterize the dynamics of life-cycle transitions and the key vulnerabilities that transcend occupational health. These findings lead us to consider the possibility that ill-health processes in males and females are intrinsically interwoven, such that the development of relationships reflects limitations and opportunities for both. Our analysis provides greater insights into explanations for gendered patterning in morbidity and mortality as well as how a gender order instigates social vulnerabilities and inequalities in health. Comprehensive and in-depth analyses of differences and inequalities in health require a broad-based approach to the study of masculinities and men's health. Interest in this issue has grown in parallel to increased concern over specific risks and vulnerabilities faced by men, but also due to the need to involve them in programs capable of promoting progress towards gender-based health equity. This article attempts to reframe these issues from the perspective of public health, providing a wider viewpoint on men's health situated within debates on the social determinants of health and the analysis of health inequalities. Based on a relational gender approach, we formulate some recommendations regarding policy and research agendas, which we argue can contribute to advancing the study and development of programs from a gender-based perspective in health. Public debate on the consumption of alcohol by adolescents has grown over recent years. It has intensified in Spain after epidemiological reports of a significant increase in alcohol consumption among adolescent girls. We designed this study to gain insights into this new trend from a gender perspective. The objective was to understand the meanings and motivations attributed to alcohol consumption by female adolescents. A qualitative study was undertaken with 96 female and male adolescents aged between 14 and 17 years, using focus groups and in-depth individual interviews. The analysis presented in this paper is based largely on the female sample. We subjected their narratives to summative content analysis. The results show how the attributed meanings of disinhibition and having a good time may be contributing to the generation of new expectations and demands in relation to codes of femininity and breaks with the gender system. Background: The literature shows how gender mandates contribute to differences in exposure and vulnerability to certain health risk factors. This paper presents the results of a study developed in the south of Spain, where research aimed at understanding men from a gender perspective is still limited. Objective: The aim of this paper is to explore the lay perceptions and meanings ascribed to the idea of masculinity, identifying ways in which gender displays are related to health. Design: The study is based on a mixed-methods data collection strategy typical of qualitative research. We performed a qualitative content analysis focused on manifest and latent content. Results: Our analysis showed that the relationship between masculinity and health was mainly defined with regard to behavioural explanations with an evident performative meaning. With regard to issues such as driving, the use of recreational drugs, aggressive behaviour, sexuality, and body image, important connections were established between manhood acts and health outcomes. Different ways of understanding and performing the male identity also emerged from the results. The findings revealed the implications of these aspects in the processes of change in the identity codes of men and women. Conclusions: The study provides insights into how the category 'man' is highly dependent on collective practices and performative acts. Consideration of how males perform manhood acts might be required in guidance on the development of programmes and policies aimed at addressing gender inequalities in health in a particular local context. Abstract: Despite growing interest in the social determinants of health and contributions from studies focussing on the analysis of explanations to enhance our understanding of the interactions between gender identities, embodied experiences and structural inequalities between men and women, few research papers have devoted attention to this perspective in the Spanish context. This study is an empirical exploration of lay knowledge, for an enhanced understanding of health inequalities in this context, from an ethnographic standpoint based on a phenomenological approach. Specifically, our aim is to study the lay perceptions of men and women regarding their gender identity and living conditions as health determinants within different "contexts" of their everyday lives, namely: the personal context; the home context; and the neighbourhood context. Fifty eight in-depth interviews and three focus groups were held between January 2005 and January 2007, and analysed using a hermeneutic method. Our findings show how disease-coping strategies or the perceived loss of social cohesion are linked to the gender system. They also point to how the dynamics of social change have developed around a strong division between the productive and reproductive arenas. Approaching these issues from different "contexts" provides insights into the explanations for the gendered patterning of mortality and morbidity, as well as furthering our understanding of the basis for social embodiment of gender differences and health inequalities in the context studied. In the discussion of our findings, we place emphasis on the implications that informal caring has for these processes and also take into account contributions of the "lay approach" to study and understand social determinants and health inequalities.
