Hemidactylus mabouia (Moreau de Jonnès, 1818) Material (six specimens): One juvenile specimen (MHNCUP/REP 209), collected from Hocco, Cazengo [-9.35422º, 14.89471º, 573 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, date unknown; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 210), collected from Cabiri [-8.92125º, 13.66654º, 31 m a.s.l.] Bengo Province, in 1903; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 211), collected from Lué (undetermined locality) in 1903; two adult specimens (MHNCUP/REP 212–213; Fig. S30), collected from Catete [-9.11667º, 13.70000º, 21 m a.s.l.] Bengo Province, in 1903; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/ REP 216, formerly UP-MHNFCP-094991), collected from Rio Luinha [-9.26667º, 14.53333º, 237 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, in 1904. Comments: Hemidactylus mabouia is commonly found in northern Angola and along the coastline of the country (Marques et al. 2018; Ceríaco et al. 2020a). This species is frequently associated with urban habitats and it is one of the most widespread Hemidactylus species (and geckos in general), with a broad distribution in sub-Saharan Africa, especially south of the Sahel (Ceríaco et al. 2020a). Ferreira (1904) cited female specimens from “Cabiri”, “Serra de Stombe” and “Catete” and an additional adult from “Cambondo” (Ferreira 1906). Extant in MHNC-UP exist specimens from both “Cabiri” (MHNCUP/REP 210) and “Catete” (MHNCUP/REP 212–213). Agarwal et al. (2021) recently revised H. mabouia and found it to comprise as many as 20 putative species-level lineages. Ceríaco et al. Pachydactlylus rangei (Andersson, 1908) Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 217, formerly UP-MHNFCP-095008; Fig. S31), collected from Bahia dos Tigres [= Baía dos Tigres] [-16.58559º, 11.82709º, 98 m a.s.l.] Namibe Province, in 1905. Comments: Pachydactylus rangei occurs in Namibe Province, southwestern Angola (Marques et al. 2018). This species was never cited by Ferreira (1904, 1906) in any of his papers. MHNCUP/REP 217 locality matches the species distribution range in the country. P. rangei was first described as Palmatogecko rangei Andersson, 1908, being the type species for the genus, but it was later synonymized with Pachydactylus by Bauer & Lamb (2005). The species was recently collected by Luís M. P. Ceríaco and Mariana P. Chondrodactylus pulitzerae (Schimdt, 1933) Material (seven specimens): Five adult specimens (MHNCUP/REP 201–205, formerly UP-MHNFCP-094992; Fig. S27), collected from Bahia dos Tigres [=Baía dos Tigres] [-16.58559º, 11.82709º, 98 m a.s.l.] Namibe Province, in 1905; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 206, formerly UP-MHNFCP-018321), collected from unknown locality, date unknown; one adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 207, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017359), collected from Bahia dos Tigres [= Baía dos Tigres] [-16.58559º, 11.82709º, 98 m a.s.l.] Namibe Province, in 1905. Comments: Chondrodactylus pulitzerae occurs along the Angolan coast, mainly in the south of the country (Marques et al. 2018), with Caop Velha, Bengo Province, being the known northern limit of distribution (Ceríaco et al. 2017). Heinz (2011) demonstrated that C. pulitzerae was the correct name for the Angolan lineage. Specimens from the Newton expedition were never cited before. MHNCUP/REP 201–205 specimens’ jar was labelled as “ Pachydactulus bibroni (Smith) Newton Bahia dos Tigres 1905 ” and “11 Baía dos Tigres 1905”. Hemidactylus cf. bayonii Bocage, 1893 Material (one specimen): One adult specimen (MHNCUP/REP 208; Fig. S28), collected from Ambaca [-9.26667º, 15.18333º, 738 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Norte Province, date unknown. Comments: Hemidactylus bayonii is an Angolan endemic species first described by Bocage (1893b). Until recently, it was only known from the regions surrounding the Kwanza River (Marques et al. 2018). Ceríaco et al. (2020a), in a review of the genus Hemidactylus from Angola, commented on the systematics of H. bayonii and designated a neotype for the species. The present specimen was never cited in any of Ferreira’s (1904, 1906) papers, nor included in Ceríaco et al. Hemidactylus longicephalus Bocage, 1873 Material (two specimens): One adult male specimen (MHNCUP/REP 214, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017357; Fig. S29), collected from Gumba [-11.26667º, 14.28333º, 784 m a.s.l.] Kwanza Sul Province, in 1903; one juvenile specimen (MHNCUP/REP 215, formerly UP-MHNFCP-017356), collected from Cabiri [-8.92125º, 13.66654º, 31 m a.s.l.] Bengo Province, in 1903. Comments: Hemidactylus longicephalus is a species found mainly in western Angola (Marques et al. 2018; Ceríaco et al. 2020a). The species has a complicated taxonomic history, recently addressed in detail by Ceríaco et al. (2020a). Specimen MHNCUP/REP 214 was cited by Ferreira (1904) as “ Hemidactylus bocagei ”, as well as a male and a female specimen from “Cunga, margens do Quanza” that we were unable to locate. Hemidactylus vernayi sp. nov. (Fig. 5) lsid: http:// zoobank.org:act: 749CA24D-F3D6-4DAF-8818-EC48CF90D884 Hemidactylus bayonii [part]: Ceríaco et al. (2020:20) Ceríaco et al. (2020) designated a neotype for H. bayonii based on specimens from Kissama National Park, south of Luanda, and provided an updated diagnosis for the species. According to the molecular results presented in the latter revision, H. bayonii extends from coastal regions of Luanda to Kwanza Sul Province, central Angola. The authors tentatively assigned four specimens from Benguela Province (AMNH 47770–1, 47778, 47780), collected in 1925 during the Vernay Angola Expedition, as well as three specimens from Lucira, northern Namibe Province (TM 24447, 24450–51) to H. bayonii. A re-evaluation of the four specimens from Benguela Province reveal that this population has a lower number of femoral pores, a more robust cephalic region and a different coloration pattern (Table 1, Fig. 3). Based on these characters we describe these specimens as a new taxon. The Lucira specimens housed in the TM were not consulted in the present comparison and need to be carefully reviewed before assigning them to any of the exiting taxa. Holotype. AMNH 47770 (Fig. 4), adult male, Lobito (-12.33333º, 13.583331º, Paratypes. AMNH 47771, adult male with the same collection data as holotype, but collected on 27 April 1925; AMNH 47778, adult male collected in Hanha do Norte (-13.266667º, 14.166667º, 919 m), Benguela Province, collected by Rudyerd and Laura Boulton on 18 May 1925; AMNH 47780, adult male with the same collecting data as the previous specimen, but collected on 17 May 1925. Diagnosis. A small sized Hemidactylus, maximum snout-vent length 36.7 mm (Fig. 3). Dorsal pholidosis heterogeneous, with 11–14 irregularly arranged longitudinal rows of subtrihedral, striated, keeled tubercles at midbody. Two well-developed pairs of postmentals, the inner pair longer than the outer pair, about the same size as the mental, in broad contact behind mental. Ventrolateral folds distinct, about 28–31 scale rows across venter. Six divided scansors beneath first digit manus, seven to that of pes, seven beneath fourth digit of manus, nine to ten beneath the fourth digit of pes. Four to five continuous precloacal pores in males. Body dorsum brownish (from light to dark), without transverse markings, cream-colored stripe extending from snout to behind the eyes. Description of the Holotype. The holotype is in good condition but without tail (Fig. 3). Detailed measurements and meristic characters of the holotype are presented in Table 3. Head medium (HL/SVL 0.27), moderately wide (HW/HL 0.60), moderately raised (HH/HL 0.45), distinct from neck. Loreal region inflated, canthus rostralis slightly prominent. Snout medium (SE/HL 0.39); almost double the size of eye diameter; scales on snout, canthus rostralis, forehead and between eyes homogenous, juxtaposed, and weakly pointed; scales on snout, canthus rostralis and forehead three to four times the size of those on the occipital and interorbital regions, canthus rostralis with slightly enlarged patch of scales. Eye small (ED/HL 0.21); pupil vertical with crenulated margins; supraciliaries small, pointed, those at the anterior end of orbit slightly larger. Ear opening oval (greatest diameter 0.9 mm); eye to ear distance larger than diameter of eye (EE/ED 1.33). Rostral wider than deep, without marked rostral groove; two enlarged internasals, separated by one scale, one supranasal on each side which is smaller than internasal, one pair of still smaller postnasals; rostral in contact with nostril, supralabial I, supranasal and internasal; nostrils small, oval, each surrounded by supranasal, internasal, rostral, and postnasal; 1–2 rows of scales separate orbit from supralabials. Mental triangular, two well developed postmentals, the inner pair the same size as mental and in extensive contact with each other behind mental; outer pair about 2/3 the size of the inner pair, separated from each other by inner pair and four gular scales, one much larger than the three others. Inner postmental bordered by mental, infralabial I, outer postmental and three gular scales; outer postmental bordered by infralabials I, infralabial II, inner postmental, and six/seven gular scales of which the outer two are much enlarged and continue as two rows of enlarged scales below infralabials. Infralabials bordered by a double row of enlarged scales. Supralabials (to midorbital position) 10 (right)/9 (left); infralabials (to angle of jaw) 8 (right)/ 8 (left). Body moderately elongate (TRL/SVL 0.37), with distinct ventrolateral folds. Dorsal pholidosis heterogeneous, composed of conical, granular, striated scales intermixed with enlarged, fairly regularly arranged, longitudinal rows of 14–16 subtrihedral, weakly keeled, striated tubercles at midbody, extending from occipital region to tail, each enlarged tubercle roughly two to three times longer than adjacent granules, surrounded by rosette of 9–10 small granules, 2–4 granules between two adjacent enlarged tubercles; enlarged tubercles on nape and shoulder small and pointed, those on occipital, temporal region still smaller. Ventral scales hexagonal, larger than dorsal, smooth, imbricate; midbody scale rows across belly 30–31; gular region with still smaller, sub-imbricate scales, those on lateral aspect of neck granular, anterior gular scales slightly larger than the rest. Four precloacal pores. Scales on the palm and sole smooth, imbricate, rounded; scales on dorsal aspect of upper arm larger than granules on dorsum, subimbricate and striated, dorsal aspect of forearm with smaller, striated, conical and granular scales, intermixed with a few enlarged conical tubercles. Fore- and hindlimbs relatively short, stout; forearm short (FL/SVL 0.15); tibia short (CL/SVL 0.16); digits moderately short, strongly clawed; all digits of manus and digits I–IV of pes indistinctly webbed; terminal phalanx of all digits curved, arising angularly from distal portion of expanded lamellar pad, half or more than half as long as associated toepad; scansors beneath each toe in straight transverse series, divided except for distal and three to four basal scansors on digit I and one or two on all digits that are single; scansors from proximal most at least twice diameter of palmar scales to distalmost single scansor: 6-7-7-7-6 (right manus), 5-9-9-9-8 (right pes). Relative length of digits: IV> V = III = II> I (right manus); V> III = IV> II> I (right pes). Coloration (in preservative). Dorsum of an irregular pattern of light brown and dark brown, and mostly continuous cream dorsolateral stripes. Crown of head light brown with scattered dark brown scales. A cream stripe extending from nostril to midorbital rim, through eye, and on to temporal region.Infralabials and posterior supralabials pale, anterior supralabials with scattered dark pigment. Forelimbs and hindlimbs brown. Venter immaculate white; palms and soles brownish. Variation. Variation in scalation and body measurements of the paratypes of H. vernayi sp. nov. is reported in Table 3. The majority of the paratypes do not differ in any important details from the holotype. Comparison with West and Central African congeners. Hemidactylus vernayi sp. nov. is readily distinguished from H. kamdemtohami and H. richardsonii by the lack of basal digital webbing; it is distinguished from H. matschiei by having spiny tubercles on the dorsum and tail and small subcaudal scales. It is distinguished from H. steindachneri by the absence of a longitudinal row of keeled tubercles on the ventrolateral border of flanks; from H. echinus by lacking a double row of enlarged spines on the lateral side of the tail; from H. ansorgii by having a more robust body (versus largely dorsoventrally flattened/slender) and by having enlarged keeled tubercles on body and tail (versus tubercles relatively indistinct). It differs from H. pseudomuriceus by having small subcaudal scales (versus large, hexagonal midventral subcaudals); from H. muriceus by having a higher number of dorsal tubercle rows (14–16 versus 7–12); and from H. hecqui in its smaller size (maximum SVL 36.7 mm versus 50 mm for the unique holotype of H. hecqui). With respect to Angolan congeners, H. vernayi sp. nov. differs from H. longicephalus in its lower number of dorsal tubercle rows (14–16 versus 16–18) and by its much smaller maximum size (maximum SVL 36.7 versus 54.8 mm); from H. benguellensis by its lower number of precloacal pores (4–6 versus 23–33); and from H. mabouia by having a lower number of precloacal pores (4–6 versus 28–39); from H. paivae by its much smaller maximum size (maximum SVL 36.7 versus 68.4 mm) and a lower number of precloacal pores (4–6 versus 6–8); from H. nzingae in its lower number of dorsal tubercle rows (14–16 versus 16–18), higher number of dorsal tubercle rows (28–31 versus 22–27) and by its much smaller maximum size (maximum SVL 36.7 versus 51.5 mm); from H. hannahsabinae sp. nov. by in its lower number of dorsal tubercle rows (14–16 versus 16–18), higher number of dorsal tubercle rows (28–31 versus 26) and by its much smaller maximum size (maximum SVL 36.7 versus 47.4 mm). The newly described species can be distinguished from H. bayonii, with which it has been previously confused by Ceríaco et al. (2020), by its lower number of precloacal pores (4–5 versus 6–9), by lacking a series of dark parallel dorsolateral markings and by its much more robust body and head (Fig. 5). Distribution. The species in known from low elevation (below 919 m a.s.l.) in the coastal areas of southern Angola, in Benguela Province (Fig. 6). Habitat and Natural History notes. Nothing is known regarding the natural history of this species. The habitat in Lobito, the type locality of H. vernayi sp. nov. is dominated by coastal sandy soils and xeric vegetation (Grandvaux-Barbosa 1970). Etymology. The specific epithet “ vernayi ”, formed in the genitive singular and is masculine, is given in honor of Arthur Stannard Vernay (1877–1960), English-born American explorer and philanthropist who funded and organized the Vernay Angolan Expedition for the American Museum of Natural History, where the type series were collected. Vernay also supported the Vernay-Lang Kalahari Expedition for the Transvaal Museum, on which the herpetologist V.F. FitzSimons (1901–1975) made important reptile discoveries. We propose the Portuguese common name of “Osga de Vernay”, and the English common name of “Vernay’s Tropical Gecko”.

(2020: 48) When describing H. nzingae, Cer��aco et al. (2020) considered specimens from Dande, Malanje Province (AMNH 47783, 51960, 51961) and Pavalange, Bi�� Province (ANSP 32189; Fig. 1) deposited in the AMNH and ANSP collections, as part of their newly described species. The specimen from Pavalange (ANSP 32189) was even included in the paratype series. These misidentifications were partly explained by the considerable overlap of scale counts and distribution range (Table 1). However, a careful reevaluation of these specimens established that they are not conspecific with the type series of H. nzingae. All male specimens of H. nzingae present a well-marked series of dark-brown ���W-shaped��� transverse markings from occiput to sacrum, bordered by a cream-colored stripe extending from behind the eyes to the insertion of the legs. This is true even for very old formalin-fixed and ethanol preserved specimens. However, both specimens ANSP 32189 from Pavalange and AMNH 47783, 51960-61 from Dande (all mature males) completely lack the transverse markings and present a much lighter coloration. The dorsolateral stripe is also much less evident than those of typical H. nzingae. Another marked difference between these specimens and those of typical H. nzingae is the much less acuminate enlarged dorsal tubercles, which in H. nzingae give the animal a very ���spiny��� appearance, contrary to the much smoother appearance of the above cited specimens (Fig. 2). Finally, the habitus of these specimens is somewhat less depressed than that of H. nzingae. Holotype. ANSP 32189 (Fig. 1; Table 2), adult male, Pavalange, Luando Natural Reserve (-10.969765��, 17.612431��, 1127 m), Bi�� Province, collected by Harold T. Green in October 1930. Additional specimens. AMNH 47783, 51960 (Fig. 1���3) two adult males and AMNH 51961, adult female, from Dande (-11.166667��, 17.166667��, 1126 m), Malanje Province, collected by Herbert Lang and W. Rudyerd Boulton 4 August 1925. Diagnosis. A medium sized Hemidactylus, maximum snout-vent length 47.4 mm, and a short, blunt snout (Fig. 1). Dorsal pholidosis heterogeneous, with 18 irregularly arranged longitudinal rows of subquadrangular, striated, feebly keeled tubercles at midbody. Two well developed pairs of postmentals, the inner pair longer than the outer pair, but about half the size of the mental, and in contact behind the mental. Ventrolateral folds distinct, about 26 scale rows across venter. Five divided scansors beneath first digit of both manus and pes, seven to eight beneath fourth digit of manus, nine beneath the fourth digit of pes. Males with a continuous series of 6���8 precloacal pores. Body dorsum brown with scattered dark markings (not forming transverse series), bordered by a thin faint creamcolored stripe extending from behind the eyes to the insertion of the legs. Description of Holotype. The holotype is an adult male in good condition, but with partially detached, regenerated tail (Fig. 1). The body shape is somewhat dorsoventrally flattened. Measurements and meristic characters of the holotype are presented in Table 2. Head medium (HL/SVL 0.30), wide (HW/HL 0.59), bulky (HH/HL 0.43), distinct from neck. Canthus rostralis moderately distinct. Snout short (SE/HL 0.37); longer than eye diameter; scales on snout, canthus rostralis, forehead and between eyes heterogeneous, juxtaposed, and weakly pointed; scales on snout, canthus rostralis and forehead twice the size of those on the occipital and interorbital regions, canthus rostralis with slightly enlarged patch of scales. Eye small (ED/HL 0.23) supraciliaries large, pointed, those at the anterior end of orbit slightly larger. Ear opening oval (greatest diameter 1.0 mm); eye to ear distance greater than diameter of eye. Rostral wider than deep; three internasals, the two outer ones enlarged, and separated from each other by the smaller one in the middle; one supranasal on each side which is smaller than internasal, one pair of still smaller postnasals; rostral in contact with nostril, supralabial I, supranasal and internasal; nostrils small (> 1 mm), circular, each surrounded by supranasal, rostral, supralabial I and postnasal; 1���2 rows of scales separate orbit from supralabials. Mental triangular; two postmentals, smaller than the mental and in extensive contact with each other behind mental; outer pair about on third the size of the inner pair, separated from each other by inner pair and four gular scales. Inner postmental bordered by mental, infralabial I, outer postmental and two gular scales; outer postmental bordered by infralabial I and II, inner postmental, four to five small gular scales of which the outer one is enlarged and continue as a single row of enlarged scales below infralabials. Infralabials bordered by a double row of enlarged scales, about 2���8 rows of scales below infralabials II to VI are enlarged and weakly imbricate. Supralabials (to angle of jaw) 10 (right)/10 (left); infralabials (to angle of jaw) 9 (right)/8 (left). Body relatively stout, moderately elongate (TRL/SVL 0.35), ventrolateral folds without denticulate scales. Dorsal pholidosis heterogeneous, comprising conical, granular, striated scales intermixed with enlarged, fairly regularly arranged, longitudinal rows of 18 subquadrangulal, smoothly keeled, striated tubercles at midbody, extending from occipital region to tail, each enlarged tubercle roughly six to seven times longer than adjacent granules, surrounded by rosette of 11���14 small granules, two or three granules between two adjacent enlarged tubercles; enlarged tubercles on nape, shoulder small and pointed, those on occipital region heterogeneous. Ventral scales larger than dorsal, smooth, imbricate; midbody scale rows across belly 26; gular region with still smaller, subimbricate scales, those on lateral aspect of neck granular, anterior gular scales slightly larger than the rest. Eight precloacal pores in a continuous, mostly straight, series. Scales on the palm and sole smooth, imbricate, rounded; scales on dorsal aspect of upper arm larger than granules on dorsum, subimbricate and striated, dorsal aspect of forearm with smaller, striated, conical and granular scales, intermixed with a few enlarged conical tubercles; those on dorsal part of thigh and shank conical, granular, striated, intermixed with enlarged, striated, sub trihedral tubercles, which are numerous on shank compared to anterior aspect of thigh, posterior aspect of thigh lacks enlarged tubercles. Fore- and hindlimbs relatively short, stout; forearm short (FL/SVL 0.15); tibia short (CL/SVL 0.16); digits moderately short, strongly clawed; all digits of manus and digits I���IV of pes indistinctly webbed; terminal phalanx of all digits curved, arising angularly from distal portion of expanded lamellar pad, half or more than half the length of the associated toepad; scansors beneath each toe in straight transverse series, divided except for distal and two to two basal scansors on digit I and one or two in all digits that are single; scansors from proximalmost at least twice diameter of palmar scales to distalmost single scansor: 5-7-8-7-7 (right manus), 7-8-9-9-8 (right pes). Relative length of digits: III = IV> II> V> I (right manus); IV> III = V> II> I (right pes). Regenerated tail. Coloration (in preservative). Ground color of head, dorsum and limbs homogeneous light brown. Dorsum with one longitudinal middorsal light stripe and eight or nine rows of incomplete transverse dark bands. Tail very light brown. Venter immaculate white; palms and soles white. Variation. Variation in scalation and body measurements of the specimens of H. hannahsabinae sp. nov. is reported in Table 2. The additional specimens do not differ in any important details from the holotype. Comparison with West and Central African congeners. Hemidactylus hannahsabinae sp. nov. is readily distinguished from H. kamdemtohami Bauer & Pauwels, 2002, and H. richardsonii (Gray, 1845) by the lack of basal digital webbing and from H. matschiei (Tornier, 1902) by having spiny tubercles on the dorsum and small subcaudal scales. It may be distinguished from H. steindachneri by lacking a longitudinal row of keeled tubercles on the ventrolateral border of flanks, from H. hecqui by not having the nostril in contact with the first supralabial. Hemidactylus hannahsabinae sp. nov. can be distinguished from H. muriceus sensu stricto by a higher number of tubercle rows on the dorsum (16���18 versus 7���12), fewer granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1���3 versus 5���10); and fewer nasals surrounding the nostril (2 versus 3). The new species can be distinguished from H. pseudomuriceus by having fewer precloacal-femoral pores in males (6���9 versus 14���17), a higher number of tubercle rows on the dorsum (16���18 versus 6���14), fewer granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1���3 versus 5���10); and fewer nasals surrounding the nostril (2 versus 3). The newly described species can be distinguished from H. echinus by having a higher number of tubercle rows on the dorsum (16���18 versus 13���15), and by being smaller (max SVL 47.4 mm versus 68.0 mm). Hemidactylus hannahsabinae sp. nov. differs from H. ansorgii by a higher number of tubercle rows on the dorsum (16���18 versus 6���12), a lower number of precloacal-femoral pores (6���9 versus 10���11), fewer nasals surrounding the nostril (2 versus 3), a stockier body (H. ansorgii has a slender body and narrow head with a short interorbital distance). Hemidactylus ansorgii also has a row of pointed tubercles separating the venter and the flanks, which are completely devoid of any tubercles, (see figure in Tornier 1902 and Perret 1975), whereas in H. hannahsabinae sp. nov. this ventrolateral row of tubercles is lacking, and tubercles extend across the flanks and dorsum. Comparing the new species with the other Angolan congeners, Hemidactylus hannahsabinae sp. nov. is easily distinguishable from H. mabouia by its smaller size (maximum SVL 47.4 mm versus 67.4 mm), lower number of precloacal-femoral pores in males (6���9 versus 28���39), fewer granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1���3 versus 5���10), and lower number of rows of ventral scales (26 versus 34���37). The new species may be distinguished from H. benguellensis by a much lower number of precloacal-femoral pores in males (6���9 versus 23���33), and fewer granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1���3 versus 4���9). The new species can be distinguished from H. bayonii by its larger size (maximum SVL 47.4 mm versus 36.2 mm), by having higher number of tubercle rows on the dorsum (16���18 versus 14���16), fewer granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1���3 versus 4���7), and fewer rows of ventral scales (26 versus 28���33). Hemidactylus hannahsabinae sp. nov. can be distinguished from H. longicephalus by having fewer granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1���3 versus 3���6), and fewer rows of ventral scales (26 versus 30���33). It can be distinguished from H. paivae by its smaller size (max SVL 47.4 mm versus 68.4 mm), having a higher number of tubercle rows on the dorsum (16���18 versus 14���16), a lower number of granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1���3 versus 4���9), and a lower number of rows of ventral scales (26 versus 28���34). Hemidactylus hannahsabinae sp. nov. can be distinguished from H. nzingae, with which it was previously confused by Cer��aco et al. (2020), by subquadrangulal, smoothly keeled, striated tubercles at midbody (versus subtrihedral, strongly keeled tubercles at midbody in H. nzingae), by having the enlarged tubercles of the same size and with similar keel across the dorsum (versus enlarged tubercles more strongly keeled and slightly larger on flanks and close to the tail than on the dorsum in H. nzingae) (Fig. 2); by having barely distinct dorsolateral bands, one longitudinal middorsal light stripe evident, eight to nine rows of incomplete transverse dark bands, on a homogeneous light brown background (versus the two well-marked longitudinal cream dorsolateral stripes and the prominent dark W-shaped markings and brown dorsal coloration in H. nzingae (Fig. 3)). Distribution. The species in known from the central Angolan plateau in Malanje and Bi�� provinces (Fig. 4). Habitat and Natural History notes. Almost nothing is known about the natural history of the species. The holotype has an unidentified insect in the mouth. The habitat where the species occurs is dominated by Angolan Miombo woodlands (Grandvaux-Barbosa 1970). The species is sympatric with H. nzingae in Dande, Malanje Province. Etymology. Hemidactylus vernayi sp. nov. (Fig. 5) lsid: http:// zoobank.org:act: 749CA24D-F3D6-4DAF-8818-EC48CF90D884 Hemidactylus bayonii [part]: Cer��aco et al. (2020:20) Cer��aco et al. (2020) designated a neotype for H. bayonii based on specimens from Kissama National Park, south of Luanda, and provided an updated diagnosis for the species. According to the molecular results presented in the latter revision, H. bayonii extends from coastal regions of Luanda to Kwanza Sul Province, central Angola. The authors tentatively assigned four specimens from Benguela Province (AMNH 47770���1, 47778, 47780), collected in 1925 during the Vernay Angola Expedition, as well as three specimens from Lucira, northern Namibe Province (TM 24447, 24450���51) to H. bayonii. A re-evaluation of the four specimens from Benguela Province reveal that this population has a lower number of femoral pores, a more robust cephalic region and a different coloration pattern (Table 1, Fig. 3). Based on these characters we describe these specimens as a new taxon. The Lucira specimens housed in the TM were not consulted in the present comparison and need to be carefully reviewed before assigning them to any of the exiting taxa. Holotype. AMNH 47770 (Fig. 4), adult male, Lobito (-12.33333��, 13.583331��, Paratypes. AMNH 47771, adult male with the same collection data as holotype, but collected on 27 April 1925; AMNH 47778, adult male collected in Hanha do Norte (-13.266667��, 14.166667��, 919 m), Benguela Province, collected by Rudyerd and Laura Boulton on 18 May 1925; AMNH 47780, adult male with the same collecting data as the previous specimen, but collected on 17 May 1925. Diagnosis. A small sized Hemidactylus, maximum snout-vent length 36.7 mm (Fig. 3). Dorsal pholidosis heterogeneous, with 11���14 irregularly arranged longitudinal rows of subtrihedral, striated, keeled tubercles at midbody. Two well-developed pairs of postmentals, the inner pair longer than the outer pair, about the same size as the mental, in broad contact behind mental. Ventrolateral folds distinct, about 28���31 scale rows across venter. Six divided scansors beneath first digit manus, seven to that of pes, seven beneath fourth digit of manus, nine to ten beneath the fourth digit of pes. Four to five continuous precloacal pores in males. Body dorsum brownish (from light to dark), without transverse markings, cream-colored stripe extending from snout to behind the eyes. Description of the Holotype. The holotype is in good condition but without tail (Fig. 3). Detailed measurements and meristic characters of the holotype are presented in Table 3. Ear opening oval (greatest diameter 0.9 mm); eye to ear distance larger than diameter of eye (EE/ED 1.33). Rostral wider than deep, without marked rostral groove; two enlarged internasals, separated by one scale, one supranasal on each side which is smaller than internasal, one pair of still smaller postnasals; rostral in contact with nostril, supralabial I, supranasal and internasal; nostrils small, oval, each surrounded by supranasal, internasal, rostral, and postnasal; 1���2 rows of scales separate orbit from supralabials. Ventral scales hexagonal, larger than dorsal, smooth, imbricate; midbody scale rows across belly 30���31; gular region with still smaller, sub-imbricate scales, those on lateral aspect of neck granular, anterior gular scales slightly larger than the rest. Four precloacal pores. Scales on the palm and sole smooth, imbricate, rounded; scales on dorsal aspect of upper arm larger than granules on dorsum, subimbricate and striated, dorsal aspect of forearm with smaller, striated, conical and granular scales, intermixed with a few enlarged conical tubercles. Forelimbs and hindlimbs brown. Venter immaculate white; palms and soles brownish. Variation. Variation in scalation and body measurements of the paratypes of H. vernayi sp. nov. is reported in Table 3. The majority of the paratypes do not differ in any important details from the holotype. Comparison with West and Central African congeners. Hemidactylus vernayi sp. nov. is readily distinguished from H. kamdemtohami and H. richardsonii by the lack of basal digital webbing; it is distinguished from H. matschiei by having spiny tubercles on the dorsum and tail and small subcaudal scales. With respect to Angolan congeners, H. vernayi sp. nov. differs from H. longicephalus in its lower number of dorsal tubercle rows (14���16 versus 16���18) and by its much smaller maximum size (maximum SVL 36.7 versus 54.8 mm); from H. benguellensis by its lower number of precloacal pores (4���6 versus 23���33); and from H. mabouia by having a lower number of precloacal pores (4���6 versus 28���39); from H. paivae by its much smaller maximum size (maximum SVL 36.7 versus 68.4 mm) and a lower number of precloacal pores (4���6 versus 6���8); from H. nzingae in its lower number of dorsal tubercle rows (14���16 versus 16���18), higher number of dorsal tubercle rows (28���31 versus 22���27) and by its much smaller maximum size (maximum SVL 36.7 versus 51.5 mm); from H. hannahsabinae sp. nov. by in its lower number of dorsal tubercle rows (14���16 versus 16���18), higher number of dorsal tubercle rows (28���31 versus 26) and by its much smaller maximum size (maximum SVL 36.7 versus 47.4 mm). The newly described species can be distinguished from H. bayonii, with which it has been previously confused by Cer��aco et al. (2020), by its lower number of precloacal pores (4���5 versus 6���9), by lacking a series of dark parallel dorsolateral markings and by its much more robust body and head (Fig. 5). Distribution. The species in known from low elevation (below 919 m a.s.l.) in the coastal areas of southern Angola, in Benguela Province (Fig. 6). Habitat and Natural History notes. Nothing is known regarding the natural history of this species. The habitat in Lobito, the type locality of H. vernayi sp. nov. is dominated by coastal sandy soils and xeric vegetation (Grandvaux-Barbosa 1970). Etymology. The specific epithet ��� vernayi ���, formed in the genitive singular and is masculine, is given in honor of Arthur Stannard Vernay (1877���1960), English-born American explorer and philanthropist who funded and organized the Vernay Angolan Expedition for the American Museum of Natural History, where the type series were collected. Vernay also supported the Vernay-Lang Kalahari Expedition for the Transvaal Museum, on which the herpetologist V.F. FitzSimons (1901���1975) made important reptile discoveries. All male specimens of H. nzingae present a well-marked series of dark-brown “W-shaped” transverse markings from occiput to sacrum, bordered by a cream-colored stripe extending from behind the eyes to the insertion of the legs. This is true even for very old formalin-fixed and ethanol preserved specimens. However, both specimens ANSP 32189 from Pavalange and AMNH 47783, 51960-61 from Dande (all mature males) completely lack the transverse markings and present a much lighter coloration. The dorsolateral stripe is also much less evident than those of typical H. nzingae. Another marked difference between these specimens and those of typical H. nzingae is the much less acuminate enlarged dorsal tubercles, which in H. nzingae give the animal a very “spiny” appearance, contrary to the much smoother appearance of the above cited specimens (Fig. 2). Finally, the habitus of these specimens is somewhat less depressed than that of H. nzingae. Holotype. ANSP 32189 (Fig. 1; Table 2), adult male, Pavalange, Luando Natural Reserve (-10.969765°, 17.612431°, 1127 m), Bié Province, collected by Harold T. Green in October 1930. Additional specimens. AMNH 47783, 51960 (Fig. 1–3) two adult males and AMNH 51961, adult female, from Dande (-11.166667°, 17.166667°, 1126 m), Malanje Province, collected by Herbert Lang and W. Rudyerd Boulton 4 August 1925. Diagnosis. A medium sized Hemidactylus, maximum snout-vent length 47.4 mm, and a short, blunt snout (Fig. 1). Dorsal pholidosis heterogeneous, with 18 irregularly arranged longitudinal rows of subquadrangular, striated, feebly keeled tubercles at midbody. Two well developed pairs of postmentals, the inner pair longer than the outer pair, but about half the size of the mental, and in contact behind the mental. Ventrolateral folds distinct, about 26 scale rows across venter. Five divided scansors beneath first digit of both manus and pes, seven to eight beneath fourth digit of manus, nine beneath the fourth digit of pes. Males with a continuous series of 6–8 precloacal pores. Body dorsum brown with scattered dark markings (not forming transverse series), bordered by a thin faint creamcolored stripe extending from behind the eyes to the insertion of the legs. Description of Holotype. The holotype is an adult male in good condition, but with partially detached, regenerated tail (Fig. 1). The body shape is somewhat dorsoventrally flattened. Measurements and meristic characters of the holotype are presented in Table 2. Head medium (HL/SVL 0.30), wide (HW/HL 0.59), bulky (HH/HL 0.43), distinct from neck. Canthus rostralis moderately distinct. Snout short (SE/HL 0.37); longer than eye diameter; scales on snout, canthus rostralis, forehead and between eyes heterogeneous, juxtaposed, and weakly pointed; scales on snout, canthus rostralis and forehead twice the size of those on the occipital and interorbital regions, canthus rostralis with slightly enlarged patch of scales. Eye small (ED/HL 0.23) supraciliaries large, pointed, those at the anterior end of orbit slightly larger. Ear opening oval (greatest diameter 1.0 mm); eye to ear distance greater than diameter of eye. Rostral wider than deep; three internasals, the two outer ones enlarged, and separated from each other by the smaller one in the middle; one supranasal on each side which is smaller than internasal, one pair of still smaller postnasals; rostral in contact with nostril, supralabial I, supranasal and internasal; nostrils small (> 1 mm), circular, each surrounded by supranasal, rostral, supralabial I and postnasal; 1–2 rows of scales separate orbit from supralabials. Mental triangular; two postmentals, smaller than the mental and in extensive contact with each other behind mental; outer pair about on third the size of the inner pair, separated from each other by inner pair and four gular scales. Inner postmental bordered by mental, infralabial I, outer postmental and two gular scales; outer postmental bordered by infralabial I and II, inner postmental, four to five small gular scales of which the outer one is enlarged and continue as a single row of enlarged scales below infralabials. Infralabials bordered by a double row of enlarged scales, about 2–8 rows of scales below infralabials II to VI are enlarged and weakly imbricate. Supralabials (to angle of jaw) 10 (right)/10 (left); infralabials (to angle of jaw) 9 (right)/8 (left). Body relatively stout, moderately elongate (TRL/SVL 0.35), ventrolateral folds without denticulate scales. Dorsal pholidosis heterogeneous, comprising conical, granular, striated scales intermixed with enlarged, fairly regularly arranged, longitudinal rows of 18 subquadrangulal, smoothly keeled, striated tubercles at midbody, extending from occipital region to tail, each enlarged tubercle roughly six to seven times longer than adjacent granules, surrounded by rosette of 11–14 small granules, two or three granules between two adjacent enlarged tubercles; enlarged tubercles on nape, shoulder small and pointed, those on occipital region heterogeneous. Ventral scales larger than dorsal, smooth, imbricate; midbody scale rows across belly 26; gular region with still smaller, subimbricate scales, those on lateral aspect of neck granular, anterior gular scales slightly larger than the rest. Eight precloacal pores in a continuous, mostly straight, series. Scales on the palm and sole smooth, imbricate, rounded; scales on dorsal aspect of upper arm larger than granules on dorsum, subimbricate and striated, dorsal aspect of forearm with smaller, striated, conical and granular scales, intermixed with a few enlarged conical tubercles; those on dorsal part of thigh and shank conical, granular, striated, intermixed with enlarged, striated, sub trihedral tubercles, which are numerous on shank compared to anterior aspect of thigh, posterior aspect of thigh lacks enlarged tubercles. Fore- and hindlimbs relatively short, stout; forearm short (FL/SVL 0.15); tibia short (CL/SVL 0.16); digits moderately short, strongly clawed; all digits of manus and digits I–IV of pes indistinctly webbed; terminal phalanx of all digits curved, arising angularly from distal portion of expanded lamellar pad, half or more than half the length of the associated toepad; scansors beneath each toe in straight transverse series, divided except for distal and two to two basal scansors on digit I and one or two in all digits that are single; scansors from proximalmost at least twice diameter of palmar scales to distalmost single scansor: 5-7-8-7-7 (right manus), 7-8-9-9-8 (right pes). Relative length of digits: III = IV> II> V> I (right manus); IV> III = V> II> I (right pes). Regenerated tail. Coloration (in preservative). Ground color of head, dorsum and limbs homogeneous light brown. Dorsum with one longitudinal middorsal light stripe and eight or nine rows of incomplete transverse dark bands. Tail very light brown. Venter immaculate white; palms and soles white. Variation. Variation in scalation and body measurements of the specimens of H. hannahsabinae sp. nov. is reported in Table 2. The additional specimens do not differ in any important details from the holotype. Comparison with West and Central African congeners. Hemidactylus hannahsabinae sp. nov. is readily distinguished from H. kamdemtohami Bauer & Pauwels, 2002, and H. richardsonii (Gray, 1845) by the lack of basal digital webbing and from H. matschiei (Tornier, 1902) by having spiny tubercles on the dorsum and small subcaudal scales. It may be distinguished from H. steindachneri by lacking a longitudinal row of keeled tubercles on the ventrolateral border of flanks, from H. hecqui by not having the nostril in contact with the first supralabial. Hemidactylus hannahsabinae sp. nov. can be distinguished from H. muriceus sensu stricto by a higher number of tubercle rows on the dorsum (16–18 versus 7–12), fewer granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1–3 versus 5–10); and fewer nasals surrounding the nostril (2 versus 3). The new species can be distinguished from H. pseudomuriceus by having fewer precloacal-femoral pores in males (6–9 versus 14–17), a higher number of tubercle rows on the dorsum (16–18 versus 6–14), fewer granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1–3 versus 5–10); and fewer nasals surrounding the nostril (2 versus 3). The newly described species can be distinguished from H. echinus by having a higher number of tubercle rows on the dorsum (16–18 versus 13–15), and by being smaller (max SVL 47.4 mm versus 68.0 mm). Hemidactylus hannahsabinae sp. nov. differs from H. ansorgii by a higher number of tubercle rows on the dorsum (16–18 versus 6–12), a lower number of precloacal-femoral pores (6–9 versus 10–11), fewer nasals surrounding the nostril (2 versus 3), a stockier body (H. ansorgii has a slender body and narrow head with a short interorbital distance). Hemidactylus ansorgii also has a row of pointed tubercles separating the venter and the flanks, which are completely devoid of any tubercles, (see figure in Tornier 1902 and Perret 1975), whereas in H. hannahsabinae sp. nov. this ventrolateral row of tubercles is lacking, and tubercles extend across the flanks and dorsum. Comparing the new species with the other Angolan congeners, Hemidactylus hannahsabinae sp. nov. is easily distinguishable from H. mabouia by its smaller size (maximum SVL 47.4 mm versus 67.4 mm), lower number of precloacal-femoral pores in males (6–9 versus 28–39), fewer granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1–3 versus 5–10), and lower number of rows of ventral scales (26 versus 34–37). The new species may be distinguished from H. benguellensis by a much lower number of precloacal-femoral pores in males (6–9 versus 23–33), and fewer granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1–3 versus 4–9). The new species can be distinguished from H. bayonii by its larger size (maximum SVL 47.4 mm versus 36.2 mm), by having higher number of tubercle rows on the dorsum (16–18 versus 14–16), fewer granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1–3 versus 4–7), and fewer rows of ventral scales (26 versus 28–33). Hemidactylus hannahsabinae sp. nov. can be distinguished from H. longicephalus by having fewer granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1–3 versus 3–6), and fewer rows of ventral scales (26 versus 30–33). It can be distinguished from H. paivae by its smaller size (max SVL 47.4 mm versus 68.4 mm), having a higher number of tubercle rows on the dorsum (16–18 versus 14–16), a lower number of granular scales between the dorsal tubercles (1–3 versus 4–9), and a lower number of rows of ventral scales (26 versus 28–34). Hemidactylus hannahsabinae sp. nov. can be distinguished from H. nzingae, with which it was previously confused by Ceríaco et al. (2020), by subquadrangulal, smoothly keeled, striated tubercles at midbody (versus subtrihedral, strongly keeled tubercles at midbody in H. nzingae), by having the enlarged tubercles of the same size and with similar keel across the dorsum (versus enlarged tubercles more strongly keeled and slightly larger on flanks and close to the tail than on the dorsum in H. nzingae) (Fig. 2); by having barely distinct dorsolateral bands, one longitudinal middorsal light stripe evident, eight to nine rows of incomplete transverse dark bands, on a homogeneous light brown background (versus the two well-marked longitudinal cream dorsolateral stripes and the prominent dark W-shaped markings and brown dorsal coloration in H. nzingae (Fig. 3)). Distribution. The species in known from the central Angolan plateau in Malanje and Bié provinces (Fig. 4). Habitat and Natural History notes. Almost nothing is known about the natural history of the species. The holotype has an unidentified insect in the mouth. The habitat where the species occurs is dominated by Angolan Miombo woodlands (Grandvaux-Barbosa 1970). The species is sympatric with H. nzingae in Dande, Malanje Province. Etymology. The specific epithet hannahsabinae honors Hannah Sabin of the Sabin family, philanthropic supporters of herpetofaunal conservation.

Lygodactylus nyaneka sp. nov. Bocage (1867, 1895, 1896) recorded them from Namibe and Huíla provinces; Schmidt (1933) recorded them from Benguela Province; Monard (1937) recorded the species from Huila and Cunene provinces; Loveridge (1947) recorded them from Namibe Province; and Laurent (1964) recorded the species from Lunda Sul and Moxico provinces. Based on these records, the species was considered to occur in Angola by all authors who reviewed the genus in Angola (Loveridge 1947; Pasteur 1965 [1964]; Branch 1998; Marques et al. 2018; Branch et al. 2019). However, Branch (1998) stated the possibility that besides L. capensis, the morphologically similar L. bradfieldi could also occur in Angola. Conradie et al. (2016) provided the first records of L. bradfieldi in the country based on specimens collected in Cuando Cubango province, and Marques et al. (2018) interpreted many of the historical records assigned to L. capensis as L. bradfieldi. Originally described by Hewitt (1932 a) based on specimens from near Okahandja in central Namibia, L. bradfieldi has been recorded from numerous places in Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Zambia Zimbabwe and South Africa (Mertens 1971; FitzSimons 1943; Loveridge 1947; Auerbach 1987; Broadley 1991; Jacobsen 2011; Bates et al. 2014; Marques et al. 2018). Morphologically the species is very similar to L. capensis, and most of the characters that are used to distinguish the species overlap considerably, making it difficult to easily diagnose the species from one another. This morphological similarity led some authors to consider the species as western race or a synonym of L. capensis (FitzSimons 1943; Loveridge 1947, 1957), until Pasteur (1965 [1964]) resurrected it. According to Pasteur (1965 [1964]), the most useful characters to differentiate L. bradfieldi from L. capensis are the type of contact between the rostral and the naso-rostrals (rostral dividing the naso-rostrals in L. bradfieldi versus rostral not dividing the naso-rostrals in L. capensis); a lower number of mid-dorsal scales (156–177 in L. bradfieldi versus 170–274 in L. capensis); and staggered rows of subcaudal plates in original tails of L. bradfieldi, versus a more linear distribution of the rows in L. capensis. FitzSimons (1943) considered that the main distinguishing character between the taxa was the number of scales entering the nostril, which in L. bradfieldi is four (rostral, 1 st supralabial and two nasal scales) and in L. capensis is five (rostral, 1 st supralabial and three nasal scales). Following Pasteur (1965 [1964]), Broadley (1991), Branch (1998) and Jacobsen (2011) considered the arrangement of the subcaudal scales of original tails as a good character to differentiate between the species. Our results show that, contrary to earlier interpretations, the central and southwestern Angolan populations of Lygodactylus belong neither to typical L. capensis nor to true L. bradfieldi but to another of several clades within the L. capensis species complex. The type locality of L. capensis is not very precise (“Kaffirland, and the districts to the north of Cape Colony” Smith 1849), and the type material is lost fide FitzSimons (1937). Kaffirland, or Kaffraria, referred to southeastern regions of the Eastern Cape, where the species is presumably not native, but has been introduced (Rebelo et al. 2019), while the “distrcits to the north of Cape Colony” was used by Smith for areas currently part of the Northern Cape Province and/or areas eastward to modern Gauteng. It is, therefore, safe to assume that the nominotypical form belongs to the South African clade (Lygodactylus capensis 3 in Figure 1; Table 2) and cannot be applied to the Angolan clade. Besides the original nomen, there are a few names in the synonymy of L. capensis but none apply to the Angolan populations, and therefore, the Angolan clade of L. capensis species complex remains an unnamed and undescribed taxon. A further detailed taxonomic revision of the L. capensis species complex is underway (S. Travers et al., unpublished). The preliminary identification of L. bradfieldi in Cuando Cubango by Conradie et al. (2016) and the interpretation by Marques et al. (2018) who considered the records of L. capensis from Namibe Province to belong to L. bradfieldi, based on the latter species’ distribution and adaptation to arid savanna habitats, is understandable given the subtle morphological differentiation between L. capensis species complex and L. bradfieldi. A review of our newly collected specimens and those historical museum specimens recorded as L. capensis for Angola revealed that all of these specimens have the subcaudal scales arrangement typical of L. bradfieldi and/or three nasal scales around the nostril (an L. capensis character). However, the molecular data provide evidence of the distinctiveness of these specimens from all other taxa, and morphological data also allow us to separate them from L. capensis sensu stricto and L. bradfiedli sensu stricto Besides the historical data, the new taxon has been found in Namibe and Huíla provinces (this paper; see Specimens examined below). Specimens cited by Bocage (1867, 1895) from Benguela and Huíla provinces were not analyzed, as they were lost in the fire that destroyed the Lisbon museum in 1978. However, the distribution of the species, as well as the limited data provided by Bocage (1895, 1896) allow us to confidentially allocate these specimens to the new taxon. The specimens from Cuando Cubango cited by Conradie et al. (2016) need molecular and morphological reevaluation. Holotype. Undetermined: Angola (MHNC 91.0447 – 48). Diagnosis. Lygodactylus nyaneka sp. nov. is a small dwarf gecko with a maximum SVL of 34 mm. It can be distinguished from other members of the genus occurring in Angola and surroundings region by having 1) four scales surrounding the nostril (1 st supralabial, two supranasal and one postnasals); 2) nostrils separated from the rostral and pierced above the suture between rostral and first supralabial; 3) mental followed by three postmentals; 4) first infralabial with 25–50% overlap of postpostmental; 5) 16 to 17 rows of ventral scales at midbody; 6) 4–6 precloacal pores in males; 7) median subcaudals arranged in a pattern of one row of scales about ¼ width of the tail alternating with two rows of scales about ½ width of the tail (Fig. 4B); 8) venter white; 9) gular region usually white, but sometimes speckled with minute black dots. Background usually grey to brown with a pair of black lines on the flanks bordering a pale stripe (not always visible) with a line of cream dots from the posterior part of the orbit to the end of the tail (Figs 14–15). Comparison with other South and Southwestern African Lygodactylus. As the molecular data provide evidence of the distinctiveness of Lygodactylus nyaneka sp. from all other taxa, we here restrict our morphological comparisons to those named congeners occurring in Angola and surrounding countries. Lygodactylus nyaneka sp. nov. differs from L. angolensis, L. chobiensis, L. lawrencei and L. tchokwe sp. nov. by having 4–6 precloacal pores (versus 7 – 10 in L. angolensi s; 7 – 11 in L. chobiensis; two in L. lawrencei; two to four in L. tchokwe sp. nov.) (Fig. 2). The new species can be distinguished from L. baptistai sp. nov., L. bradfieldi and L. capensis in not having the rostral in contact with the nostrils. It can be further distinguished from nominotypical L. capensis by its staggered rows of subcaudal plates in original tails (versus a more linear distribution of the rows in L. capensis). It differs from L. chobiensis and L. baptistai sp. nov. by its white ventral and gular coloration (versus bright yellow in L. chobiensis and L. baptistai sp. nov.). Description of holotype. Coloration in ethanol. The coloration of Lygodactylus nyaneka sp. nov. is brown to ashy-grey above, with a pair of black lines on the flanks from snout to the end of the tail, bordering a pale stripe with a line of cream dots that continues to the tail. Mid-dorsal region with small scattered cream dots. The head slightly darker than body and limbs, bearing a speckled pattern with some lighter irregular dots. The venter is white with no markings or speckling, although lateral margins of the belly and ventral surface of the limbs are speckled. The chin and gular regions white with no markings or speckling. Dorsal surface of the limbs with scattered cream dots. Tail brown with a pattern of two parallel cream dots, running on across the dorsal surface up to the regenerated part, ventrally white with no markings or speckling. Variation. Variation in scalation and body measurements of the type series is reported in Table 6. Paratypes agree almost entirely with the holotype, with the exception of two male paratypes (CAS 263529; UF 187228) that differ slightly in coloration, with both specimens having a darker dorsum with a more faded pattern, and speckled black on the gular region (CAS 263529). Distribution. In Angola the species is known from the central and southwestern regions of the country, from the lower areas of Benguela to Namibe, Huíla and Bié provinces, and potentially to Cuando Cubango Province. Based on geography, the single specimen identified by Baptista et al. (2019) from Bicuar National Park main camp as Lygodactylus angolensis most likely represent a misidentification of Lygodactylus nyaneka sp. nov. In neighboring Namibia, the species is known with certainty from Epupa Falls (Fig. 16) but is probably more extensively distributed. Habitat and natural history notes. The species is usually found basking during daytime on rocky outcrops, trees, logs or human infrastructures, such as fences, houses and poles (Fig. 17). Never found on the ground. This species occurs in sympatry with Lygodactylus angolensis, in the northern region of Bié Province. Etymology. The specific epithet “ nyaneka ” is a noun in apposition and is given in honor of the dominant ethnolinguistic group of the region where the species exists. We suggest “Nyaneka Dwarf Gecko” and “Osga-Anã-Nhanheca” as the English and Portuguese common names, respectively, for this species.

Lygodactylus tchokwe sp. nov. (Tables 4, 5; Fig. 1–4, 22–23) urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act: 63496A90-1C9B-460E-928B-A5EF7966A257 Lygodactylus capensis (Laurent 1964: 31) Lygodactylus angolensis [part] (Marques et al. 2018: 188) Laurent (1964) noted the presence of an extralimital population of L. capensis in the northeastern provinces of Lunda Sul and Moxico. While some historical records of L. capensis exist for the neighboring areas in Katanga region, Democratic Republic of the Congo (de Witte 1933; Loveridge 1947), the main distribution of L. capensis is the southeastern region of the continent, extending inland to Botswana and southern Zambia, then northeast to Kenya (but see earlier comments on the paraphyly of L. capensis). Given its distribution, Marques et al. (2018) wrongly considered that the records from Laurent (1964) should represent L. angolensis, but a review of the data presented by Laurent suggested that this interpretation was incorrect. Laurent (1964) presented data on six specimens, three males and two females from Alto Cuílo, in Lunda Sul Province, and one female from Luisavo, Moxico Province. Two of the males had four precloacal pores, but one of the males had only two. Although the range of precloacal pores in L. capensis varies from four to seven (Branch (1998), Jacobsen (2011) noted that a small percentage of specimens may have only three pores), a range in which two of Laurent’s specimens would fit; among regional congeners only L. lawrencei is known to have two precloacal pores. The range of precloacal pores in L. angolensis is from seven to ten, which excludes the tentative identification of Marques et al. (2018). Other characters presented by Laurent (1964) are also sufficient to dismiss its original identification as L. capensis. The number of scales entering the nostril is three (one supranasal, 1 st supralabial and one postnasal) in all specimens except the female from Luisavo (MD 5312d). This combination of characters, especially in the case of the adult male with two single pores, suggests that the Lunda animals cannot be allocated to any of the currently known species of Lygodactylus occurring in the region. We were able to reexamine these specimens in the collections of Museu do Dundo. This was crucial, as Laurent’s (1964) data on gekkonids has been found to be wrong on other occasions (see Ceríaco et al. (2020). Mensural and meristic data on the specimens are presented in Table 6. Our analysis of the specimens confirmed Laurent’s (1964) observations. Given that part of this series of specimens has distinctive morphological characters that unambiguously differentiate it from all other known Lygodactylus species, we describe it here as new species. Holotype. An adult male (MD 5312 b; Fig. 22) collected at Alto Cuílo, Lunda Sul Province, northeastern Angola [-10.0º, 19.58333º, 1256m a.s.l.], collected by an unidentified local, on November 1954. Paratype. Two adult males (MD 5312 a, 5312c) and one adult female (MD 5312 d), with the same collecting data as the holotype. Additional material. One adult female (MD 5337), with the same collection data as the holotype, except the collecting date (28 May 1954); one adult female (MD 5791), collected at Luisavo Waterfalls in Calunda Post, Moxico Province, northeastern Angola [- 11.86667º N, 23.58333º E, 1212 m a.s.l.], collected by an unidentified local, on February 1955. Diagnosis. A medium sized Lygodactylus species. Lygodactylus tchokwe sp. nov. can be distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characteristics: 1) three scales surrounding the nostril (one supranasal, 1 st supralabial and one postnasal); 2) nostrils separated from the rostral and pierced between supranasal and the upper limit of first supralabial; 3) mental followed by three postmentals; 4) first infralabial Comparison with other South and Southwestern African Lygodactylus. The species differs from L. angolensis and L. chobiensis in having fewer precloacal pores (2 to 4 versus 7–10 in L. angolensis and 7–11 in L. chobiensis) (Fig. 2). It may be distinguished from L. nyaneka sp. nov. and L. capensis by having three scales surrounding the nostril (versus four in L. nyaneka sp. nov. (Fig. 3) and five in L. capensis), and from L. bradfieldi and L. capensis by having the nostril separated from the rostral (versus nostril contacting rostral). It differs from L. lawrencei by the lack of gular ornamentation in males, and by having the nostrils separated from the rostral, in contact with the supranasal and pierced near the dorsal margin of the first labial (versus nostrils separated and pierced between supranasal and first labial; Fig. 3). Coloration in ethanol. All the known specimens of Lygodactylus tchokwe sp. nov. are homogeneous darkbrown dorsally. There are vestiges of a pale dorsolateral irregular spots in the flanks of the dorsum and tail, but they have mostly faded or vanished due to long term storage in formalin. Variation. Variation in scalation and body measurements of the type series is reported in Table 5. The female paratype agrees almost entirely with the holotype, although the markings on gular region are more faded. The male paratypes both have four precloacal pores. Distribution. The new species is known only from Alto Cuílo, Lunda Sul Province, and Luisavo, in Moxico Province (Fig. 23). It is probable that the species occurs in the neighboring province of Lunda Norte, and potentially in neighboring areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and western Zambia. Habitat and Natural history notes. Almost nothing is known regarding the habitat and natural history of this species. According to Laurent (1964), the specimen from Luisavo was collected in a moist forest. Etymology. The specific epithet “ tchokwe ” is given in honor of the dominant ethnolinguistic group of the region where the species exists. At present the genus Lygodactylus is represented by three species in Angola confirmed by voucher specimens—L. angolensis, L. bradfieldi, and L. capensis—and two others believed to be present, but without specimens with precise localities, L. chobiensis and L. lawrencei. We present a detailed taxonomic revision of the group in Angola and describe three new species, Lygodactylus baptistai sp. nov. L. nyaneka sp. nov. and Lygodactylus tchokwe sp. nov. Phylogenetic analysis using the mitochondrial marker ND2, as well as morphological data support the recognition of the new species. In addition, data suggest that specimens historically assigned to L. capensis in Angola represent misidentifications of L. nyaneka sp. nov. and L. tchokwe sp. nov. We revisit the identity of Lygodactylus laurae, a junior synonym of L. angolensis. We also present the first confirmed record of L. lawrencei in the country, using both morphological and molecular data. The description of the new species and the revision of the taxonomic identity of the Angolan populations of the genus, raises the number of species occurring in the country to five. A key to the Angolan species is presented.

Lygodactylus angolensis Bocage, 1896 (Tables 4; Fig. 1–11) Lygodactylus angolensis (Bocage 1896: 110, 1897: 193; Monard 1937: 52; Loveridge 1947: 207; 1957: 187; Hellmich 1957: 35; Pasteur 1965 [1964]: 56; Branch 1998: 245; Broadley & Cotterill 2004: 41; Ceríaco et al. 2016a: 57, 2016b: 56, 57, 2018b: 413, 421, 422; Marques et al. 2018: 188,189; Branch et al. 2019: 315) Lygodactylus laurae (Schmidt 1933: 4; Mertens 1937: 6; Barbour & Loveridge 1946: 147; Marx 1959: 464; McCoy & Richmond 1966: 154) Lygodactylus capensis [part] (Bocage 1895: 15) Despite being a widespread species in Angola and surrounding countries, the species was only described at the end of the nineteenth century based on two specimens collected by the Portuguese explorer José d’Anchieta “on the walls of a corral” in Hanha, Benguela Province (Bocage 1896). Bocage (1896) noted that some specimens from Cahata and Galanga, both in Benguela Province, that he had previously (Bocage 1895) identified as L. capensis were in fact the newly described species as well. The main characters used by Bocage to diagnose the newly described species against L. capensis were the number of perinasal scales (= scales entering the nostril) (four in L. angolensis versus three in L. capensis), the number of supralabials (eight to nine versus six to eight in L. capensis) and infralabials (seven to eight versus six to seven in L. capensis) and the number of preanal pores in males (nine versus four to seven in L. capensis). In the type catalog of the Lisbon Museum, Bocage (1897) mistakenly considered both the specimens from Hanha and those from Cahata and Galanga as types of L. angolensis. Monard (1937) reported a putative specimen of L. angolensis from Ebanga, but the number of perinasal scales was, in the opinion of the author, different from the typical L. angolensis. Sternfeld (1911) described Lygodactylus fischeri (non Boulenger 1890) from Mozambique, a name that was later synonymized with L. angolensis by Loveridge (1947), which was the first record of the species out of Angola. Other records from Tanzania, Zambia, and South Africa (in error) were later provided by Loveridge (1933) and Pitman (1934), respectively. Schmidt (1933), based on the material collected by the Pulitzer Angolan Expedition in Chitau, Bié Province, central Angola, described Lygodactylus laurae (Fig. 5). This species was also synonymized with L. angolensis by Loveridge (1947), and recent collection of new specimens very close to Chitau (MHNC-UP /REP 495–498; CAS 266003–266009) revealed that the only species present in the region corresponds to L. angolensis. Loveridge (1947) provided several additional records for Angola and Hellmich (1957) reported three specimens from Entre Rios, Benguela Province. There are extensive records of the species distribution outside Angola (see, for example, Pasteur 1965 [1964] and Branch 1998 for estimates of the distribution of the species), but no precise locality records have been published from Angola since the late 1950s. The first new records of the species were based on specimens collected in Cangandala National Park, Malanje Province, by Ceríaco et al. (2016b; 2018b). Other recent records are from other areas of Malanje (Laúca) and Bié (14 km by dirt road from Cassumbi village) provinces (see Specimens examined below). Marques et al. (2018) considered Laurent’s (1964) records of L. capensis as L. angolensis, but subsequent examination of these specimens, which are currently housed in the Museu do Dundo, do not support this synonymization (see account for Lygodactylus tchokwe sp. nov. below). Diagnosis. Lygodactylus angolensis is small dwarf gecko with a maximum SVL of 34 mm. Lygodactylus baptistai sp. nov. (Tables 4–5; Fig. 1–4, 10–13) urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act: 321EE7E6-1CD1-486A-B68E-835324834867 The presence of Lygodactylus on Serra da Neve inselberg has not previously been recorded, despite its known occurrence in nearby areas of Namibe and Benguela provinces (Marques et al. 2018). The inselberg is known to harbor other endemic species of amphibians (Ceríaco et al. 2018a) and reptiles (Marques et al. 2019b). According to our molecular data, the Serra da Neve species is part of a lineage chiefly comprising East African montane taxa. Based on our molecular and morphological evidence, we herein describe this population as a new species, endemic to Serra da Neve inselberg. Holotype. An adult male (CAS 263557, field number AMB 10328; Figs. 10–11) collected on a tree, at Mamué riparian area, Namibe Province, southwestern Angola [-13.80080º, 13.12350º, 715 m a.s.l.], collected by L. Ceríaco, S. Bandeira and I. Agarwal, on 22 November 2016. Paratype. An adult female (CAS 263551, field number AMB 10329), same data as holotype. Diagnosis. A medium sized Lygodactylus species. Lygodactylus baptistai sp. nov. can be distinguished from other member of its genus by the following combination of characteristics: 1) three scales (rostral, one supranasal and 1 st supralabial) entering the nostril; 2) nostril broadly in contact with the rostral; 3) mental followed by two postmentals; 4) first infralabial Comparison with other South and Southwestern African Lygodactylus. As the molecular data provide evidence of the distinctiveness of Lygodactylus baptistai sp. from all other taxa, we here restrict our morphological comparisons to those named congeners occurring in Angola and surrounding countries. Lygodactylus baptistai sp. nov. differs from L. angolensis L. chobiensis, and L. lawrencei by having 5 precloacal pores (versus 7 – 10 in L. angolensi s; 7 – 11 in L. chobiensis; two in L. lawrencei) (Fig. 2). The new species can be distinguished from L. bradfieldi, L. capensis, L. nyaneka sp. nov. and L. tchokwe sp. nov. by having only three scales entering the nostril (versus four in L. bradfieldi and L. nyaneka sp. nov., five in L. capensis), and by having the nostril broadly in contact with the rostral (versus always separated in L. angolensis, L. chobiensis, L. lawrencei and L. nyaneka sp. nov.) (Fig. 3). It furthermore differs from all the comparator species, except L. chobiensis, by its bright yellow ventral and gular coloration (versus cream or white in L. angolensis, L. bradfieldi, L. capensis, L. nyaneka sp. nov. and L. lawrencei). Description of holotype. Head broad and slightly distinct from neck; snout long than broad, the distance from its edge to the anterior border of the eye greater than the interorbital distance anteriorly, and slightly greater than the distance between the eye and ear opening; ear opening medium and roundish; snout covered with enlarged flattened granular scales, larger anteriorly on snout, medium-sized on crown, becoming smaller laterally above the eye; scales on the snout larger than those on the occiput; prominent canthus rostralis; rostral pentagonal, high than wider; three scales (rostral, one supranasal and 1 st supralabial) entering the nostril; nostrils pierced in the suture between rostral and first supralabial; nostril in contact with rostral; supranasals separated by a single internasal granular scale; mental pentagonal, broader than long, followed by two postmentals; enlarged scales behind postmentals, decreasing in size towards base of the throat and increasing on chest and belly; supralabials 6/7; infralabials 6/6; first infralabial with 25% contact with postpostmental; gulars smooth, enlarged and forming transverse rows posteriorly, 19 between posterior extent of the infralabials/jaws; 15 rows of ventral scales at midbody; rows across midbody; limbs short but well developed, pentadactyl extremities; 1 st digit of both manus and pes extremely reduced and lacking claw, distal portions of remaining digits expanded, bearing claw; 6 pairs of lamellae under 4 th of digit manus and 6 pairs of lamellae beneath 4 th digit of pes; dorsum with small, homogeneous, granular and keeled scales with a similar size to those on trunk, the scales on limbs are slightly larger and less keeled; venter with homogeneous smooth scales; scales on ventral surface of the forelimbs smaller, granular and imbricate, hindlimb scales are similar to those on venter, although the surface scales of thighs are smaller and imbricate, similar to those on the arm; precloacal pores 5; 35 to 40 generation glands – enlarged, glandular scales present along the ventral surface of each thigh; tail cylindrical; caudal scales dorsally enlarged, flattened and homogeneous; keeled, spinose and acuminate on the lateral surface of the tail; median subcaudal scales large, flattened and smooth, more than ¾ of width of tail, arranged in a single broad row, although at the base of the tail several subcaudals are subdivided. Coloration in ethanol. The coloration of Lygodactylus baptistai sp. nov. is brown to smoke-grey above, with a posteriorly narrowing continuous cinnamon brown band on the flanks from the neck to the base of the tail. The upper limit of the band marked on each side by a series of white to cream, roughly evenly-spaced, tubercles from the neck to the midbody. The head lighter than body and limbs, bearing a speckled pattern with some lighter irregular dots. The venter is cream to white with no markings or speckling, lateral margins of the belly present a dark cinnamon-brown coloration. Chin and gular regions white to cream with a complex pattern of black markings consisting of a border medial to the mandibular margin extending between the level of the angles of the jaws, a posterior chevron with its apex directed anteriorly and confluent with a more anterior irregular marking, and two incomplete broken lines lateral and parallel to the chevron (Fig. 9). A more faded and irregular dark marking is present at the posterior extent of the gular region. Dorsal part of the tail brown with a lighter chevron-like pattern bordered by dark-brown on the tip, ventrally cream with brown speckles. Coloration in life. Background coloration is smoke-grey to brown, with a brownish stripe from the insertion of the forelimb to the tail.A posteriorly narrowing continuous cinnamon brown to dark orange stripe on the flanks from the neck to the base of the tail. 3 (left) to 5 (right) yellowish to cream spots on the upper limit of these stripes. The head is lighter than the body, with the snout more cinnamon brown to dark orange. The limbs are also lighter than the body, approaching a greyish coloration speckled with some cinnamon brown to dark orange irregular dots. The dorsal surfaces of the autopodia near the digital insertions have a bold, irregular, cinnamon brown to dark orange pattern. The venter is bright yellow with no marking or speckling, lateral margins of the venter light grey with some cinnamon shades. The gular region is bright yellow, becoming paler behind the level of the angle of the jaws. There is a broad black line bordering the mandibular margin between the level of the angles of the jaws, a posterior black chevron with its apex directed anteriorly and confluent with a more anterior irregular marking, and two incomplete broken lines lateral and parallel to the chevron (Fig. 10). The tail is cinnamon brown to dark orange with a lighter chevron-like pattern with a dark brown border extending along the length of the tail, the venter is light yellow with an inconspicuous line formed by grey speckles. Variation. Variation in scalation and body measurements of the type series is reported in Table 5. The female paratype agrees almost entirely with the holotype, although the markings on gular region are more faded and the color is whitish-cream, not yellow as the male holotype. Distribution. The new species is known only from Mamué, at the base of the Serra de Neve Inselberg in Namibe Province, southwestern Angola (Fig. 12). Habitat and Natural history notes. The species was found on the trunk of a tree in a riparian area, northeast of Mamué town (Fig. 13). It was active during midday, at approximately 11 h. The area had almost no human disturbance, and the tree cover was substantial. Lygodactylus nyaneka sp. nov. was collected sympatrically. Etymology. The specific epithet “ baptistai ”, formed in the genitive singular and is masculine. It is given in honor of Álvaro “Varito” Baptista, from Omauha Lodge, Namibe Province, Angola. This recognition is due to the friendship of the Baptista family and their important role in the support of all our expeditions, especially to Serra da Neve. We suggest “Baptista’s Dwarf Gecko” and “Osga-Anã-de-Baptista” as the English and Portuguese common names, respectively, for this species.

Lygodactylus lawrencei Hewitt, 1926 (Tables 4; Fig. 1–4, 18–20) Lygodactylus lawrencei (Branch 1998: 247; Marques et al. 2018: 191,192) Several authors had suggested the presence of L. lawrencei in southern Angola (Branch 1998; Marques et al. 2018), but so far no vouchered records confirmed its presence in the country. The species was originally described from the Kunene Region in Namibia by Hewitt (1926a) and has to date been confirmed only in far northwestern Namibia. This rocky, dry savanna specialist is potentially the easiest species of Lygodactylus to diagnose in the region, given its stereotypically low number of precloacal pores (two), when compared to its congeners. Our records from Maungo and 11 km N of Espinheira camp, Iona National Park camp are the first vouchered records of this species for Angola and mark the northernmost known distribution of the species. Comparison of the mitochondrial gene 16S (add GenBank no.) confirms that the Angolan and Namibian populations are conspecific. Diagnosis. Lygodactylus lawrencei is small dwarf gecko with a maximum SVL of 30 mm.
