Abstract China prioritizes a coordinated and sustainable shift from rural to urban areas, termed rural-urban transformation. This involves land, population, and industry urbanization. Here we explore the spatiotemporal dynamics of rural-urban transformation patterns in China, focusing on the degree of integrated transformation and the coupling between the three tracks. To conduct our investigation, we utilized the urbanization cube theory, satellite-derived gridded datasets, and the self-organizing map. Our findings show that eastern China has higher levels of integrated transformation and coupling compared to western China. There has been an overall increase in the coupling of China’s three rural-urban transformation tracks. We identified six typical rural-urban transformation patterns across China. Over time, 53.58% of prefectures improved in rural-urban transformation patterns, 3.44% degraded, and 42.98% (mainly in western China) remained unchanged. More importantly, we highlight that the increasing and coupling rural-urban transformation in China has reduced inequities in urban and rural well-being.

China has progressively elevated old city transformation and urban renewal to a policy priority, positioning them as new endogenous drivers of urban development. It raises the demand for real-time insight into the spatiotemporal distribution of old and renewed urban areas. We propose a weakly supervised mapping framework with adaptive adjustments city by city without relying on high-precision training samples. It is also convenient for variable spatial range and study period. We combined Landsat imagery during 2000–2021, LandTrendr change detection algorithm and Simple Non-Iterative Clustering image segmentation into a Threshold Voting approach. The overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient of our results are 78.37 % and 0.57, respectively, with interesting global and local patterns. Old urban areas cluster in the early developed city centers, accounting for 22.55 % nationwide, usually interspersed and surrounded with renewed urban areas (77.45 %). Our mapping framework provides an efficient and flexible scheme for ground history detection, and the related results can be applied as helpful references for urban renewal field work in China.

Various phthalic acid esters (PAEs) such as dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) co-exist with nanopollutants in aquatic environment. In this study, Daphnia magna was exposed to nano-CuO and DBP or BBP at environmental relevant concentrations for 21-days to investigate these combined toxic effects. Acute EC50 values (48 h) of nano-CuO, DBP, and BBP were 12.572 mg/L, 8.978 mg/L, and 4.785 mg/L, respectively. Results showed that co-exposure with nano-CuO (500 μg/L) for 21 days significantly enhanced the toxicity of DBP (100 μg/L) and BBP (100 μg/L) to Daphnia magna by 18.37% and 18.11%, respectively. The activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase were enhanced by 10.95% and 14.07%, 25.63% and 25.91%, and 39.93% and 35.01% in nano-CuO+DBP and nano-CuO+BBP treatments as compared to the individual exposure groups, verifying that antioxidative defense responses were activated. Furthermore, the co-exposure of nano-CuO and PAEs decreased the population richness and diversity microbiota, and changed the microbial community composition in Daphnia magna. Metabolomic analysis elucidated that nano-CuO + PAEs exposure induced stronger disturbance on metabolic network and molecular function, including amino acid, nucleotides, and lipid metabolism-related metabolic pathways, as comparison to PAEs single exposure treatments. In summary, the integration of physiological, microflora, and untargeted metabolomics analysis offers a fresh perspective into the potential ecological risk associated with nanopollutants and phthalate pollution in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract Explaining the spatially variable impacts of flood‐generating mechanisms is a longstanding challenge in hydrology, with increasing and decreasing temporal flood trends often found in close regional proximity. Here, we develop a machine learning‐informed approach to unravel the drivers of seasonal flood magnitude and explain the spatial variability of their effects in a temperate climate. We employ 11 observed meteorological and land cover (LC) time series variables alongside 8 static catchment attributes to model flood magnitude in 1,268 catchments across Great Britain over four decades. We then perform a sensitivity analysis to assess how a 10% increase in precipitation, a 1°C rise in air temperature, or a 10 percentage point increase in urban or forest LC may affect flood magnitude in catchments with varying characteristics. Our simulations show that increasing precipitation and urbanization both tend to amplify flood magnitude significantly more in catchments with high baseflow contribution and low runoff ratio, which tend to have lower values of specific discharge on average. In contrast, rising air temperature (in the absence of changing precipitation) decreases flood magnitudes, with the largest effects in dry catchments with low baseflow index. Afforestation also tends to decrease floods more in catchments with low groundwater contribution, and in dry catchments in the summer. Our approach may be used to further disentangle the joint effects of multiple flood drivers in individual catchments.

The transmission of manure- and wastewater-borne antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) to plants contributes to the proliferation of antimicrobial resistance in agriculture, necessitating effective strategies for preventing the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from ARB in the environment to humans. Nanomaterials are potential candidates for efficiently controlling the dissemination of ARGs. The present study investigated the abundance of ARGs in hydroponically grown garlic (Allium sativum L.) following nano-CeO2 (nCeO2) application. Specifically, root exposure to nCeO2 (1, 2.5, 5, 10 mg L−1, 18 days) reduced ARG abundance in the endosphere of bulbs and leaves. The accumulation of ARGs (cat, tet, and aph(3’)-Ia) in garlic bulbs decreased by 24.2–32.5 % after nCeO2 exposure at 10 mg L−1. Notably, the lignification extent of garlic stem-disc was enhanced by 10 mg L−1 nCeO2, thereby accelerating the formation of an apoplastic barrier to impede the upward transfer of ARG-harboring bacteria to garlic bulbs. Besides, nCeO2 upregulated the gene expression related to alliin biosynthesis and increased allicin content by 15.9–16.2 %, promoting a potent antimicrobial defense for reducing ARG-harboring bacteria. The potential exposure risks associated with ARGs and Ce were evaluated according to the estimated daily intake (EDI). The EDI of ARGs exhibited a decrease exceeding 95 %, while the EDI of Ce remained below the estimated oral reference dose. Consequently, through stimulating physical and chemical defenses, nCeO2 contributed to a reduced EDI of ARGs and Ce, highlighting its potential for controlling ARGs in plant endosphere within the framework of nano-enabled agrotechnology.

Abstract In this Editorial, the Geo: Geography and Environment Editors reflect on the journal over the past year, highlighting some of the key papers published and ‘Geo Themes’ being developed: ‘Decolonising Climate Geography’; ‘Climate Change, AI and Sustainability’; ‘Geographies of Energy Futures’. The Editors renew the call for submissions on these topics and put out a new call for Special Section proposals on subjects around the environment, climate and sustainability.

Abstract This paper analyses the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the revisions of China's primary, secondary and high school curriculum standards. Employing a word frequency analysis of SDGs‐related keywords across ten disciplines, the study reveals an increasing trend in SDGs integration, particularly in Physical Education and Health, and Biology, but notes a lack of growth in the Arts discipline. Key findings include the widespread presence of SDG3 (Good Health and Well‐being) and SDG11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), with a notable absence of SDG5 (Gender Equality) and SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). This study suggests enhancing SDGs coverage in Arts education, broadening the scope to include underrepresented SDGs and promoting a balanced integration of all SDGs across disciplines. It emphasizes the critical role of Geography Education in addressing global challenges and advocates for interdisciplinary teaching methods. The study highlights the importance of regular assessment in curriculum standards to ensure effective SDGs integration, aiming to align China's educational framework with global developmental objectives for a sustainable future.

Abstract Non-technical summary Oil palm has been criticized for being an environmentally unfriendly oil crop. In recent decades, oil palm plantations have extended into conservation landscapes, causing severe environmental damage and harming biodiversity. Nevertheless, oil palm remains a highly productive oil crop from which most of the world's vegetable oil is produced. Therefore, measuring the environmental impact of oil palm plantations and identifying suitable land to support its sustainable development is crucial. Technical summary To meet the rising global palm oil demand sustainably, we tracked annual land cover changes in oil palm plantation and mapped areas worldwide suitable for sustainable oil palm cultivation. From 1982 to 2019, 3.6 Mha of forests were converted to oil palm plantations. Despite a recent decline in overall conversion, the shift from forest to oil palm plantations has become increasingly more common over the last decade, rising from 14.1 to 34.5% between 2009 and 2019. During 1982–2019, 2.23 Mha of peatland and 0.1 Mha of protected areas were converted for oil palm plantations. The potential sustainable land amounts to 103.5–317.9 Mha (Asia: 44.6–105.1 Mha, Africa: 34.7–96.4 Mha, and Latin America: 35.2–116.5 Mha). Future oil palm expansion is anticipated to take place in countries like Brazil, Nigeria, Colombia, Indonesia, Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ghana, where more sustainable land is available for cultivation. Malaysia, on the other hand, is about to exceed the area of sustainable cultivation, and further expansion is not recommended. These findings can advance our understanding of the environmentally damaging impacts of oil palm and enhance the feasibility of sustainable oil palm development. Social media summary How should suitable land be chosen for the establishment of oil palm plantations to support the sustainable development of the oil palm plantation industry?

Urban vibrancy is an important indicator of urban prosperity. Evaluating the correlation between urban vibrancy and housing prices is increasingly necessary. However, most studies have ignored the temporal characteristics of urban vibrancy and only considered its spatial nature. This study optimizes the identification model of urban vibrancy centers and proposes a novel model for evaluating the time-dynamic accessibility of urban vibrancy centers. The model takes into account real-time changes in travel costs and analyses its spatial correlation with housing prices. The case study of Chengdu shows significant variations in the spatiotemporal distribution of urban vibrancy centers. High-vibrancy areas are concentrated near commercial complexes. The time distribution of urban vibrancy accessibility is more concentrated at night (18:00–24:00), and the high-accessibility areas are located around the old city and the newly planned Central Business District in the south. Housing prices and urban vibrancy centers accessibility are mainly negatively correlated spatially. The study emphasizes the temporal nature of urban vibrancy and accessibility and enriches the evaluation model of urban vibrancy centers. It also contributes to the improvement of the framework of urban vibrancy research and deepens the understanding of the important variable of “time” in urban planning.

Rapid economic development and interference by human activities in rapid urbanization regions have caused great land use/land cover change (LUCC), which significantly affects ecosystem functions and services. It is crucial to assess the spatiotemporal evolution of ecosystem service value (ESV) in such regions, especially for the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) in China. In this study, we investigated and predicted the effect of LUCC on the ESV in the GBA from 1990 to 2030 using the latest annual 30 m LUCC database of China, the future land use simulation (FLUS) model, and ecosystem service evaluation approaches. The study period was divided into the historical period (1990–2015) and the forecast period (2015–2030). The results showed that forest and cropland were the dominant land-use types (>77% of the GBA), and the expansion of built-up land (3822.4 km2) was the clearest process during 1990–2015. The reduction of cropland and forest contributed the most to the decrease in the total ESV. Moreover, the results confirmed that the FLUS model is effective at predicting future LUCC in the GBA. The ESV was predicted to decrease to 4962.23 × 100 million yuan in the 2030s under the current development mode if regional forest and waterbody reductions are not constrained. This study provides a reference for promoting the rational use of land resources and ecological construction in the GBA and can help to promote ecological planning and environmental protection.

Global land cover has undergone extensive and rapid changes as a result of human activities and climate change. These changes have had a significant impact on biodiversity, the surface energy balance, and sustainable development. Global land cover data underpins research on the development of earth system models, resource management, and evaluation of the ecological environment. However, there are limitations in the classification detail, spatial resolution, and rapid change monitoring capability of global land cover change data. Building on the earlier Global Land Cover Mapping (Finer Resolution Observation and Monitoring – Global Land Cover, FROM-GLC), we developed the improved Global Land Cover Change Monitoring Platform (FROM-GLC Plus) using methods such as multi-season sample space-time migration, multi-source data time series reconstruction, and machine learning. The FROM-GLC Plus system provides a capacity for producing global land cover change data set from the 1980s with flexibility in spatio–temporal details. The preliminary results show that FROM-GLC Plus provides a framework for near real-time land cover mapping at multi-temporal (annual to daily) and multi-resolution (30 m to sub-meter) levels.

Background: Urbanicity refers to the conditions that are particular to urban areas and is a growing environmental challenge that may affect hippocampus and neurocognition. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the average pre-adulthood urbanicity on hippocampal subfield volumes and neurocognitive abilities as well as the sensitive age windows of the urbanicity effects. Participants and methods: We included 5,390 CHIMGEN participants (3,538 females; age: 23.69 ± 2.26 years, range: 18–30 years). Pre-adulthood urbanicity of each participant was defined as the average value of annual night-time light (NL) or built-up% from age 0–18, which were extracted from remote-sensing satellite data based on annual residential coordinates of the participants. The hippocampal subfield volumes were calculated based on structural MRI and eight neurocognitive measures were assessed. The linear regression was applied to investigate the associations of pre-adulthood NL with hippocampal subfield volumes and neurocognitive abilities, mediation models were used to find the underlying pathways among urbanicity, hippocampus and neurocognition, and distributed lag models were used to identify sensitive age windows of urbanicity effect. Results: Higher pre-adulthood NL was associated with greater volumes in the left (β = 0.100, 95%CI: [0.075, 0.125]) and right (0.078, [0.052, 0.103]) fimbria and left subiculum body (0.045, [0.020, 0.070]) and better neurocognitive abilities in information processing speed (-0.212, [-0.240, −0.183]), working memory (0.085, [0.057, 0.114]), episodic memory (0.107, [0.080, 0.135]), and immediate (0.094, [0.065, 0.123]) and delayed (0.087, [0.058, 0.116]) visuospatial recall, and hippocampal subfield volumes and visuospatial memory showed bilateral mediations for the urbanicity effects. Urbanicity effects were greatest on the fimbria in preschool and adolescence, on visuospatial memory and information processing from childhood to adolescence and on working memory after 14 years. Conclusion: These findings improve our understanding of the impact of urbanicity on hippocampus and neurocognitive abilities and will benefit for designing more targeted intervention for neurocognitive improvement.

Background: Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are an emerging class of contaminants with endocrine disrupting hazards. The impact of PFASs exposure on sex steroids remain inconclusive. Methods: This study used data from the 2013–2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), including 525 adolescents aged 12–19. We explored the association between serum PFASs and sex steroids using multiple linear regression, weighted quantified sum (WQS) regression, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR). Mediation analyses were performed to assess whether serum albumin mediates the effects of PFASs on sex steroids. Results: Single exposure to perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) or n-perfluorooctanoic acid (n-PFOA) was found to be inversely associated with sex hormone binding protein (SHBG) after adjustment for confounders. Results from both the WQS and BKMR models showed that mixed exposure to the five PFASs was negatively associated with SHBG and testosterone (TT) in all adolescents, while only in the WQS model, the mixed exposure to PFASs was negatively correlated with E2 and FAI in boys and negatively correlated with TT and SHBG in girls. Serum albumin was found to possibly mediate 9.7 % of the association between mixed PFAS exposure and TT, and 9.7 % of the association between mixed PFAS exposure and SHBG. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates a negative association between mixed exposure to PFASs and adolescent TT and SHBG levels, and suggests that albumin may merit further study as a potential target for PFAS harm reduction.

Understanding the distribution and land history of old urban areas (OUAs) and renewed urban areas (RUAs) has become the key point of urban management. However, it is hard to acquire adequate information for lack of pertinent detection methods. Here, we established a complete mapping framework on Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform to identify OUAs and RUAs and detect the temporal information of urban renewal, which was implemented in Beijing during 2000–2020. We used Landsat imagery and LandTrendr algorithm to fit the spectral trajectories of 14 bands/indices with specific segment attributes as the feature inputs for Random Forest classification. We produced the maps of OUAs and RUAs with an overall accuracy of 95.36%. On this basis, we further utilized LandTrendr to detect the start year, end year, and duration of urban renewal with the accuracies within the ±5-year difference of 85.52%, 80.97%, and 74.53%, respectively. These maps all present informative spatiotemporal patterns. Furthermore, the urban renewal process is likely to be influenced by major national or international events. The study answers the issues about urban renewal from multiple angles and provides scientific support for future urban planning.

Cropland monitoring is a crucial component for a broad user community from Land Use and Land Cover Change study to food security policy making. Faced with the rich natural ecological environment and variable agricultural production conditions of Mid-Spine Belt of Beautiful China (MSBBC), this study developed a novel operational assessment framework that combined the near real-time land cover mapping platform (i.e., FROM-GLC Plus), the FAO Agricultural Stress Index System, and the land degradation monitoring method suggested by United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification for the timely monitoring of cropland extent change, cropland conditions, and cropland degradation. With integrated monitoring system, this framework can provide convenient access to high-spatiotemporal- resolution cropland maps (30 m, dekadal) and instant (near real time) cropland dynamics. According to the monitoring results, we found that the abnormally high temperatures of summer 2022 adversely affected crop health in the southwest of MSBBC. Besides, our results suggested that China’s ecological restoration projects made remarkable achievement in MSBBC. The productivity of more than 70% of cropland in MSBBC has improved, and only ~6% cropland (~3.69 × 104 km2) has degraded since 2000, mainly distributed in cropland with steep slope, insufficient precipitation, and intensive use. Site-specific measures, such as conservation tillage, improved tillage systems, and cropland ecological projects, should be adopted for sustainable cropland use and further increase in land carrying capacity of MSBBC to achieve balanced east-west development in China.

A huge amount of CO2 emissions from the drained drawdown areas of reservoirs overturns the previous results in carbon budget. Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) has a large drawdown area, which accounts for nearly one third of the total area of the TGR. However, the total CO2 emissions from the TGR drawdown area have seldom been estimated by far. To demonstrate the contribution of CO2 emissions from the TGR drawdown areas, the study measured CO2 emissions from the downstream part of the TGR drawdown areas by the chamber method, and synthesized CO2 emissions from the other parts of TGR drawdown areas. Both the diel and seasonal variation indicated that CO2 emission fluxes were significantly higher in the drained season than in the flooded season. The average CO2 emission flux in the drained season was about 1.7 times higher than that in the inundated season in our experiments, and the ratio increased to 4.8 times when other available data was added. CO2 emission flux in the drained season was positively correlated with air temperature, soil temperature at 5 cm depth, soil water content, organic carbon, and soil nitrate nitrogen, but negatively correlated with elevations. CO2 emission from the TGR drawdown area was estimated to be 342.67–495.96 Gg yr−1 in the drained season, and offset about 80% of carbon fixation by vegetation in the TGR drawdown area. Therefore, CO2 emission from the drained soils should be included in the carbon budget of reservoir systems, especially for these reservoirs with a large drawdown area.

Given the rapid development of nanotechnology, it is crucial to understand the effects of nanoparticles on living organisms. However, it is laborious to perform toxicological tests on a case-by-case basis. Quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) is an effective computational technique because it saves time, costs, and animal sacrifice. Therefore, this review presents general procedures for the construction and application of nano-QSAR models of metal-based and metal-oxide nanoparticles (MBNPs and MONPs). We also provide an overview of available databases and common algorithms. The molecular descriptors and their roles in the toxicological interpretation of MBNPs and MONPs are systematically reviewed and the future of nano-QSAR is discussed. Finally, we address the growing demand for novel nano-specific descriptors, new computational strategies to address the data shortage, in situ data for regulatory concerns, a better understanding of the physicochemical properties of NPs with bioactivity, and, most importantly, the design of nano-QSAR for real-life environmental predictions rather than laboratory simulations.

To clarify the global status and research hotspots of heavy metal pollution phytoremediation, we used Web of Science, Cite Space software, and VOS viewer to analyse 1123 publications from the period of 2000–2020. Literature categories, research hotpots, and the most prolific publications by country, institution, and author were analysed separately. Around 34% of the articles are contributed from five countries: China (29.37%), India (11.00%), Spain (6.29%), Italy (6.20%), and Pakistan (5.67%). The hot research topic keywords were “diversity”, “translocation”, and “enhanced phytoremediation”. Cadmium was the most highly concerned heavy metal in the phytoremediation. Twenty-three articles were highly cited, and they mainly focused on 1) enhancing the remediation ability of plants in heavy metal contaminated soil by microbial and chemical additives; 2) the molecular effect and mechanism of heavy metals on plant growth and development; 3) discovering novel heavy metal hyper-enriched plants which can remediate mixed heavy metal pollution. From the above analysis, we concluded that the future research directions should be 1) strengthening the plant remediation ability by biochemical means; 2) studying the molecular mechanism underlying heavy metal damage to plants; 3) studying the enrichment principle of plants for heavy metals. The present study provides a further understanding of the trends in phytoremediation of heavy metal pollution, and the data analysed can be used as a guide for future research directions.

Background: Residential surrounding greenness may be protective of dyslipidemia are often theorized but remain poorly quantified. In particular, the underlying biological mechanisms of blood lipid changes with green spaces remain unclear. Methods: Our observational epidemiology study included a residentially stable sample of 1035 coronary heart disease patients, and proteomics study included 16 participants. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was used to evaluate residential greenness exposures. Proteomics technology was used to identify plasma greenness-related proteome disturbance, and the pathway analysis was employed to evaluate the potential biological mechanisms of greenness decreasing dyslipidemia risk. Result: Higher residential surrounding greenness in the 500-m area was associated with lower risks of dyslipidemia (odds ratio (OR) = 0.871, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.763, 0.994 for per one-quartile NDVI increase). Lymphocytes mediated 18.7% of the association between greenness and dyslipidemia. Greenness related proteins (including PLXDC1, IGFBP2 and LY6D) may regulate the biological functions of lipid metabolism and transport-related proteins (including ADIPOQ and CES1) through a series of biological processes. Conclusion: People in greener surroundings have a lower risk of dyslipidemia, which may be due to their lower inflammation, stronger lipid transporter activity, and normal cholesterol metabolism.

Resource-based cities in China face the dual pressure of environmental pollution and unemployment. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the effect of environmental regulation on employment. In this study, we first analyzed the theoretical mechanism of employment effects of environmental regulation. Second, we constructed a nonlinear panel threshold regression model with industrial structure rationalization and optimization as the threshold variables and used data from 115 resource-based prefecture-level cities to empirically examine the impact of environmental regulation on employment. The results demonstrate that 1) There is a significant threshold effect between environmental regulation and employment in resource-based cities, with the rationalization and optimization of the industrial structure gradually crossing the threshold from a low threshold to a high threshold, and the impact of environmental regulation on employment has gradually changed from an inhibitory effect to a promotion effect; 2) This conclusion still holds after the robustness test and the division of life cycles of different types of resource-based cities; 3) The coal resource cities as a representative of this kind of resource-based cities with serious environmental pollution, strengthening environmental regulation, have an obvious role in promoting employment. This study enriches the research content of environmental regulation on employment and provides useful references for rational improvement of unemployment in China.

Accurate acquisition for the positions of the waterlines plays a critical role in coastline extraction. However, waterline extraction from high-resolution images is a very challenging task because it is easily influenced by the complex background. To fulfill the task, two types of vision transformers, segmentation transformers (SETR) and semantic segmentation transformers (SegFormer), are introduced as an early exploration of the potential of transformers for waterline extraction. To estimate the effects of the two methods, we collect the high-resolution images from the web map services, and the annotations are created manually for training and test. Through extensive experiments, transformer-based approaches achieved state-of-the-art performances for waterline extraction in the artificial coast.

Global warming has led to earlier spring green-up dates (GUDs) in recent decades with significant consequences for global carbon and hydrologic cycles. In addition to changes in climate, land cover change (LCC), including interchanges between vegetation and non-vegetation, and among plants with different functional traits, may also affect GUD. Here, we analyzed how satellite-derived GUD from 1992 to 2020 was impacted by changes in temperature, precipitation, standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), solar radiation, and LCC for the Northern Hemisphere (>30° N). While the climate variables had larger impact overall, variability in GUD was controlled by LCC for 6% of the Northern Hemisphere, with systematically earlier or later changes among transitions between different land cover types. These changes were found mainly along the southeastern coast of the United States, in Central-north Europe, and across northeastern China. We further showed that climate change attribution of earlier GUD during 1992–2020 was overestimated by three days when the impact of LCC was ignored. Our results deepen the understanding of how LCC impacts GUD variability and enables scientists to more accurately evaluate the impact of climate change on land surface phenology.

As an emerging pollutant in the aquatic environment, microcystin-LR (MC-LR) can enter the body through multiple pathways, and then induce apoptosis and gonadal damage, affecting reproductive function. Previous studies focused on male reproductive toxicity induced by MC-LR neglecting its effects on females. The apoptotic signal-regulated kinase 1 (ASK1) is an upstream protein of P38/JNK pathway, closely associated with apoptosis and organ damage. However, the role of ASK1 in MC-LR-induced reproductive toxicity is unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the role of ASK1 in mouse ovarian injury and apoptosis induced by MC-LR. After MC-LR exposure, ASK1 expression in mouse ovarian granulosa cells was increased at the protein and mRNA levels, and decreased following pretreatment by antioxidant N-acetylcysteine, suggesting that MC-LR-induced oxidative stress has a regulatory role in ASK1 expression. Inhibition of ASK1 expression with siASK1 and NQDI-1 could effectively alleviate MC-LR-induced mitochondrial membrane potential damage and apoptosis in ovarian granulosa cells, as well as pathological damage, apoptosis and the decreased gonadal index in ovaries of C57BL/6 mice. Moreover, the P38/JNK pathway and downstream apoptosis-related proteins (P-P38, P-JNK, P-P53, Fas) and genes (MKK4, MKK3, Ddit3, Mef2c) were activated in vivo and vitro, but their activation was restrained after ASK1 inhibition. Data presented herein suggest that the ASK1-mediated P38/JNK pathway is involved in ovarian injury and apoptosis induced by MC-LR in mice. It is confirmed that ASK1 has an important role in MC-LR-induced ovarian injury, which provides new insights for preventing MCs-induced reproductive toxicity in females.

Abstract Marked by large interannual variability, East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) rainfall has profound socio‐economic impacts through its dominant influence on floods and droughts. Improving predictions of the interannual variations of EASM rainfall has important implications for over 20% of the world's population. While coupled modeling systems have demonstrated some prediction skill related to the El Niño Southern Oscillation with remote influence on EASM rainfall, the impact of soil moisture has heretofore not been systematically investigated. Using a weakly coupled data assimilation (WCDA) system to constrain the soil moisture and soil temperature in a coupled climate model with a global land data assimilation product, this study demonstrates significant improvements in simulating the interannual variations of EASM rainfall, capturing the notable shift to a “wetter‐South‐drier‐North” rainfall pattern in China in the early 1990s. Hindcast simulations initialized with the well‐balanced states from a coupled simulation with WCDA also show significant multi‐year rainfall prediction skill over East China and Tibetan Plateau. Improvements in predicting the EASM rainfall are attributed to the strong land‐atmosphere coupling in large areas over China, which allows improved predictions of soil moisture to influence precipitation through soil moisture‐precipitation feedback, and the effects of land anomalies on the EASM circulation. This study highlights the significant contribution of land to the interannual predictability of EASM rainfall, with a great potential to advance skillful interannual predictions of benefit to the large populations influenced by the annual whiplash of the summer monsoon rain.

With the rising global population growth and limitation of traditional agricultural technology, global crop production could not provide enough nutrients to assure adequate intake for all people. Nano-fertilizers and nano-pesticides have 20–30% higher efficacy than conventional products, which offer an effective solution to the above-mentioned problem. Rhizosphere is where plant roots, soil, and soil biota interact, and is the portal of nutrients transporting from soil into plants. The rhizosphere processes could modify the bioavailability of all nutrients and nanomaterials (NMs) before entering the food plants. However, to date, the overall rhizosphere processes regulating the behaviors and bioavailability of NMs to enhance the nutritional quality are still uncertain. In this review, a meta-analysis is conducted to quantitatively assess NMs-mediated changes in nutritional quality from food plants. Furthermore, the current knowledge and related mechanisms of the behavior and bioavailability of NMs driven by rhizosphere processes, e.g., root secretions, microbial and earthworm activities, are summarized. A series of rhizosphere processes can influence how NMs enter plants and change the biological responses, including signal transduction and nutrient absorption and transport. Moreover, future perspectives are presented to maximize the potentials of NMs applications for the enhancement of food crop production and global food security.

Spatial data of urban green spaces (UGS) are critical for cities worldwide to evaluate their progress towards achieving the urban sustainable development goals on UGS. However, UGS maps at the global scale with acceptable accuracies are not readily available. In this study, we mapped UGS of all 1039 mid- and large-sized cities across the globe in 2015 with dense remote sensing data (i.e. 51 494 Landsat images) and Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Also, we quantified the spatial distribution and accessibility of UGS within the cities. By combining the greenest pixel compositing method and the percentile-based image compositing method, we were able to obtain the maximum extent of UGS in cities while better differentiating UGS from other vegetation such as croplands. The mean overall classification accuracy reached 89.26% (SD = 3.26%), which was higher than existing global land cover products. Our maps showed that the mean UGS coverage in 1039 cities was 38.46% (SD = 20.27%), while the mean UGS accessibility was 82.67% (SD = 22.89%). However, there was a distinctive spatial equity issue as cities in high-income countries had higher coverage and better accessibility than cities in low-income countries. Besides developing a protocol for large-scale UGS mapping, our study results provide key baseline information to support international endeavors to fulfill the relevant urban sustainable development goals.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a data-oriented risk prevention and control system for seven major kinetic energy supply systems (power distribution, dust removal, moisture removal and odor removal, air pressure, vacuum, process soft water and sewage station water manufacturing, boiler steam system, air conditioning). The traditional risk control means should be improved through systematic process and information technology, and the risk management of operation control should be gradually transformed from event-driven to data-driven, so as to strengthen the comprehensive warning and prevention and control of operational risks. The management mode of integrated management and control is “clear hierarchy, effective air separation, effective control in place, quick early warning and simple handling”. Water, electricity, gas and steam of the power system are realized as part of the internal quality and process control of the cigarette brand, and all the control is pushed to the power supply terminal.

The problem of bottom hole effusion is an important reason for the reduction and even shutdown of natural gas wells. Downward velocity string is an important drainage gas recovery process, which can improve the flow rate of gas and discharge more liquid from the wellhead. However, the depth and timing of the velocity string is a technical problem that has been difficult to solve by field engineers. To solve this problem, this paper designs a method to select the depth and timing of the velocity string in the case of highly deviated wells and applies this method to Well X6–2 and Well X2–1 of PCOC in Ordos Basin, China. The optimization results show that when the wellhead pressure is 6.26 MPa, Well X6–2 should lower the 2–1.71 in. or 2.375–1.995 in. velocity string to 3337.9 m before the formation pressure decays to 8.800 MPa, which is most conducive to improve the liquid carrying capacity of gas wells. When the wellhead pressure is 4 MPa, Well X2–1 should lower 2–1.71in. velocity string to 3401.3 m before the formation pressure decays to 5.800 MPa, or lower 2.375–1.995 in. velocity string to 3401.3 m before the formation pressure decays to 5.900 MPa.

Urban boundaries, an essential property of cities, are widely used in many urban studies. However, extracting urban boundaries from satellite images is still a great challenge, especially at a global scale and a fine resolution. In this study, we developed an automatic delineation framework to generate a multi-temporal dataset of global urban boundaries (GUB) using 30 m global artificial impervious area (GAIA) data. First, we delineated an initial urban boundary by filling inner non-urban areas of each city. A kernel density estimation approach and cellular-automata based urban growth modeling were jointly used in this step. Second, we improved the initial urban boundaries around urban fringe areas, using a morphological approach by dilating and eroding the derived urban extent. We implemented this delineation on the Google Earth Engine platform and generated a 30 m resolution global urban boundary dataset in seven representative years (i.e. 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2018). Our extracted urban boundaries show a good agreement with results derived from nighttime light data and human interpretation, and they can well delineate the urban extent of cities when compared with high-resolution Google Earth images. The total area of 65 582 GUBs, each of which exceeds 1 km ^2 , is 809 664 km ^2 in 2018. The impervious surface areas account for approximately 60% of the total. From 1990 to 2018, the proportion of impervious areas in delineated boundaries increased from 53% to 60%, suggesting a compact urban growth over the past decades. We found that the United States has the highest per capita urban area (i.e. more than 900 m ^2 ) among the top 10 most urbanized nations in 2018. This dataset provides a physical boundary of urban areas that can be used to study the impact of urbanization on food security, biodiversity, climate change, and urban health. At present, the flexible transformation of thermal power is an effective measure to solve the problem of renewable energy consumption. At the same time, the improvement of the electricity auxiliary service market makes the power generation enterprises improve their ability to provide auxiliary services through flexible transformation and obtain benefits while serving the power system. Therefore, how to construct the flexibility evaluation system of regional units according to the characteristics of the auxiliary service market in different regions is of great significance to power generation enterprises. In this paper, the flexibility evaluation system of the auxiliary market environment is designed. Analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method were used to determine the weight and final evaluation basis.

With the progress of science and technology, DCS has been widely used in the field of power plant automation. It integrates modern computer technology, modern control technology, modern communication technology and CRT technology to realize the monitoring and control of power production process. DCS network adopts 10Mbps Ethernet, which is the data transmission channel of DCS system. Its stability is related to the safe operation of the whole power plant. Therefore, more and more power generation enterprises begin to attach importance to network security management of DCS. In this paper, the author puts forward his own views on the network failure phenomenon of Foxboro I/A Series system, and gives the solution, hoping to have some reference significance for the safety management work of other similar DCS network of the unit.
