We present an analysis of the physical and dynamical states of two sets of EAGLE zoom simulations of galaxy haloes, one at high redshift ($z=2-3$) and the other at low redshift ($z=0$), with masses of $\approx 10^{12} M_{\odot}$. Our focus is how the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of these $L^*$ star-forming galaxies change over the last 10 Gyr. We find that the high-$z$ CGM is almost equally divided between the "cool" ($T, 16 pages, 15 figures. Submitted to MNRAS. Comments welcome. Estimates of the integrated (SFR) and specific (sSFR) rates of star formation are given for 181 galaxies of later Sc, Scd, and Sd types seen almost face-on. Their SFRs were determined from FUV fluxes in the GALEX survey. The median values of the sSFR are: -10.66 dex for Sc, -10.44 dex for Scd, and -10.40 dex for Sd types in units of yr-1. The average value of the sSFR for these galaxies falls off smoothly from lowmass to giant disks. After accounting for photometric errors, the specific star formation rate has a small cosmic variation of 0.16 dex. In order to reproduce the observed stellar mass on a cosmic time of 13.8 Gyr, the galaxies without bulges viewed face-on must have had an SFR two-three times higher in the past than observed now., Published in Astrophysics, 2020, v.63, pp.151-165

Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are of crucial importance to trace back the galaxy mass assembly across cosmic time, yet their formation and quenching remain remarkably elusive. The discoveries of massive, dead galaxies at ever-growing redshifts provided compelling evidence to push their formation up to redshift > 4–5 when the Universe was barely 1 Gyr old. In this talk I will present our results on the ages of a new sample of ETGs at z ∼ 3, built by exploiting HST WFC3/G141 rest-frame optical/near-UV grism spectroscopy to study the nature of 10 passive galaxy candidates at 2.5 < z < 3.5 in COSMOS.This work is part of a PhD project aimed at quantifying the parent space density of distant genuine passive galaxies. I will also discuss the importance of multi-wavelength data in clarifying the degree of contamination by dusty star-forming galaxies affecting the color selection.

This article presents an up-dated analysis of synthetic optical and UV emission lines of simulated galaxies over cosmic time. The strong emission lines are derived from self-consistently coupling novel spectral models accounting for nebular emission from young stars, AGN and Post-AGB stars to cosmological zoom-in as well as large-scale simulations. Investigating the evolution of optical line-ratios in the BPT diagrams, the simulations can successfully reproduce the observed trend of [OIII]/Hβ ratio increasing from low to high redshifts, due to evolving star formation rate and gas metallicity. Standard selection criteria in the BPT diagrams can appropriately distinguish the main ionising source(s) of galaxies at low redshifts, but they are less reliable for metal-poor galaxies, dominating the early Universe. To robustly classify the ionising radiation of such metal-poor galaxies, diagnostic diagrams based on luminosity ratios of UV lines are discussed. The novel interface between simulations and observations is potentially important for the interpretation of high-quality spectra of very distant galaxies to be gathered by next-generation telescopes, such as the James Webb Space Telescope.

ISM comprises multiple components, including molecular, neutral, and ionized gas, and dust, which are related to each other mainly through star formation - some are fuel for star formation (molecular gas) while some are the products of it (ionized gas, dust). To fully understand the physics of star formation and its evolution throughout cosmic time, it is crucial to measure and observe different ISM components of galaxies out to high redshifts. I will review the current status of near-IR studies of galaxies during the peak of star formation activity (z~1-3). Using rest-frame optical emission lines, we measure dust, star formation, and gaseous properties of galaxies. JWST will advance such studies by probing lower luminosities and higher redshifts, owing to its significantly higher sensitivity. Incorporating ALMA observations of cold dust and molecular gas at z>1 will give us a nearly complete picture of the ISM in high-redshift galaxies over a large dynamic range in mass., To be published in the proceedings of the IAU Symposium 352 (12 pages, review article)

Context. The properties of galaxies at redshift z > 6 hold the key to our understanding of the early stages of galaxy evolution and can potentially identify the sources of the ultraviolet radiation that give rise to the epoch of reionisation. The far-infrared cooling line of [C II] at 158 μm is known to be bright and correlate with the star formation rate (SFR) of low-redshift galaxies, and hence is also suggested to be an important tracer of star formation and interstellar medium properties for very high-redshift galaxies. Aims. With the aim to study the interstellar medium properties of gravitationally lensed galaxies at z > 6, we search for [C II] and thermal dust emission in a sample of 52 z ∼ 6 galaxies observed by the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey. Methods. We perform our analysis using LINESTACKER, stacking both [C II] and continuum emission. The target sample is selected from multiple catalogues, and the sample galaxies have spectroscopic redshift or low-uncertainty photometric redshifts (σz Results. Our analyses find no detection of either [C II] or continuum. An upper limit on L[CII] is derived, implying that [C II] remains marginally consistent for low-SFR z > 6 galaxies but likely is under-luminous compared to the local L[CII]-SFR relationship. We discuss potential biases and possible physical effects that may be the cause of the non-detection. Further, the upper limit on the dust continuum implies that less than half of the star formation is obscured.

Post-starburst (or "E+A") galaxies trace the fastest and most dramatic processes in galaxy evolution. Recent work studying the evolution of galaxies through this phase have revealed insights on how galaxies undergo structural and stellar population changes as well as the role of various feedback mechanisms. In this review, I summarize recent work on identifying post-starburst galaxies; tracing the role of this phase through cosmic time; measuring stellar populations, on-going star formation, morphologies, kinematics, interstellar medium properties, and AGN activity; mechanisms to cause the recent starburst and its end; and the future evolution to quiescence (or not). Fundamental differences in the radio properties of red quasars (QSOs), as compared to blue QSOs, have been recently discovered, positioning them as a potential key population in the evolution of galaxies and black holes across cosmic time. To elucidate their nature, we exploited a rich compilation of photometry and spectroscopic data to model their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from the UV to the FIR and characterise their emission-line properties. Following a systematic comparison approach, we infer the AGN accretion, obscuration, and host galaxy properties in a sample of ~1800 QSOs at 0.21000 km/s) in red QSOs. We find that red QSOs that exhibit evidence for high-velocity winds present a stronger signature of the infrared excess, suggesting a causal connection between reddening and the presence of hot dust in QSO winds. We propose that dusty winds at nuclear scales are potentially the physical ingredient responsible for the colours in red QSOs, as well as a key parameter for the regulation of accretion material in the nucleus., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 22 pages, 16 figures. We present the first study of the large-scale clustering of post-starburst (PSB) galaxies in the high redshift Universe ($0.510^{14}$M$_{\odot}$), suggesting they are likely to be infalling satellite galaxies in cluster-like environments. High-mass PSB galaxies are more weakly clustered at low redshifts, but they reside in higher mass haloes with increasing look-back time, suggesting strong redshift-dependent halo downsizing. These key results are consistent with previous results suggesting that two main channels are responsible for the rapid quenching of galaxies. While high-redshift ($z>1$) galaxies appear to be quenched by secular feedback mechanisms, processes associated with dense environments are likely to be the key driver of rapid quenching in the low-redshift Universe ($z, Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present new stellar mass functions at z ∼ 6, z ∼ 7, z ∼ 8, z ∼ 9 and, for the first time, z ∼ 10, constructed from ∼800 Lyman-break galaxies previously identified over the eXtreme Deep Field and Hubble Ultra-Deep Field parallel fields and the five Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey fields. Our study is distinctive due to (1) the much deeper (∼200 hr) wide-area Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) imaging at 3.6 μm and 4.5 μm from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey Re-ionization Era Wide-area Treasury from Spitzer program (GREATS) and (2) consideration of z ∼ 6–10 sources over a 3× larger area than those of previous Hubble Space Telescope+Spitzer studies. The Spitzer/IRAC data enable ≥2σ rest-frame optical detections for an unprecedented 50% of galaxies down to a stellar mass limit of ∼ 10 8  ⊙ across all redshifts. Schechter fits to our volume densities suggest a combined evolution in the characteristic mass  * and normalization factor ϕ * between z ∼ 6 and z ∼ 8. The stellar mass density (SMD) increases by ∼1000× in the ∼500 Myr between z ∼ 10 and z ∼ 6, with indications of a steeper evolution between z ∼ 10 and z ∼ 8, similar to the previously reported trend of the star formation rate density. Strikingly, abundance matching to the Bolshoi–Planck simulation indicates halo mass densities evolving at approximately the same rate as the SMD between z ∼ 10 and z ∼ 4. Our results show that the stellar-to-halo mass ratios, a proxy for the star formation efficiency, do not change significantly over the huge stellar mass buildup occurred from z ∼ 10 to z ∼ 6, indicating that the assembly of stellar mass closely mirrors the buildup in halo mass in the first ∼1 Gyr of cosmic history. The James Webb Space Telescope is poised to extend these results into the “first galaxy” epoch at z ≳ 10.

We investigate the formation history of massive disk galaxies in hydro-dynamical simulation--the IllustrisTNG, to study why massive disk galaxies survive through cosmic time. 83 galaxies in the simulation are selected with M$_{*,z=0}$ $>8\times10^{10}$ M$_\odot$ and kinematic bulge-to-total ratio less than $0.3$. We find that 8.4 percent of these massive disk galaxies have quiet merger histories and preserve disk morphology since formed. 54.2 percent have a significant increase in bulge components in history, then become disks again till present time. The rest 37.3 percent experience prominent mergers but survive to remain disky. While mergers and even major mergers do not always turn disk galaxies into ellipticals, we study the relations between various properties of mergers and the morphology of merger remnants. We find a strong dependence of remnant morphology on the orbit type of major mergers. Specifically, major mergers with a spiral-in falling orbit mostly lead to disk-dominant remnants, and major mergers of head-on galaxy-galaxy collision mostly form ellipticals. This dependence of remnant morphology on orbit type is much stronger than the dependence on cold gas fraction or orbital configuration of merger system as previously studied., 12 pages, 1 table, 8 figures. The molecular gas content of normal galaxies at z>4 is poorly constrained, because the commonly used molecular gas tracers become hard to detect. We use the [CII]158um luminosity, recently proposed as a molecular gas tracer, to estimate the molecular gas content in a large sample of main-sequence star-forming galaxies at z=4.4-5.9, with a median stellar mass of 10^9.7 Msun, drawn from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) survey. The agreement between molecular gas masses derived from [CII] luminosity, dynamical mass, and rest-frame 850um luminosity, extrapolated from the rest-frame 158um continuum, supports [CII] as a reliable tracer of molecular gas in our sample. We find a continuous decline of the molecular gas depletion timescale from z=0 to z=5.9, which reaches a mean value of (4.6+/-0.8)x10^8 yr at z~5.5, only a factor of 2-3 shorter than in present-day galaxies. This suggests a mild enhancement of star formation efficiency toward high redshifts, unless the molecular gas fraction significantly increases. Our estimates show that the rise in molecular gas fraction as reported previously, flattens off above z~3.7 to achieve a mean value of 63%+/-3 over z=4.4-5.9. This redshift evolution of the gas fraction is in line with the one of the specific star formation rate. We use multi-epoch abundance matching to follow the gas fraction evolution over cosmic time of progenitors of z=0 Milky Way-like galaxies in 10^13 Msun halos and of more massive z=0 galaxies in 10^14 Msun halos. Interestingly, the former progenitors show a monotonic decrease of the gas fraction with cosmic time, while the latter show a constant gas fraction from z=5.9 to z~2 and a decrease at z, 16 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. We use the Fundamental Plane (FP) to measure the redshift evolution of the dynamical mass-to-light ratio ($M_{\mathrm{dyn}}/L$) and the dynamical-to-stellar mass ratio ($M_{\mathrm{dyn}}/M_*$). Although conventionally used to study the properties of early-type galaxies, we here obtain stellar kinematic measurements from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) Survey for a sample of $\sim1400$ massive ($\log( M_*/M_\odot) >10.5$) galaxies at $0.6, Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in ApJL

We use the IllustrisTNG simulations to show how the fractions of quenched galaxies vary across different environments and cosmic time, and to quantify the role AGN feedback and preprocessing play in quenching group and cluster satellites. At $z=0$, we select galaxies with $M_* = 10^{9-12} M_{\odot}$ residing within ($\leq R_{200c}$) groups and clusters of total host mass $M_{200c}=10^{13-15.2} M_{\odot}$. TNG predicts a quenched fraction of $\sim70-90\%$ (on average) for centrals and satellites $\gtrsim 10^{10.5} M_{\odot}$, regardless of host mass, cosmic time ($0\leq z\leq0.5$), clustercentric distance and time since infall in the $z=0$ host. Low-mass centrals ($\lesssim 10^{10} M_{\odot}$), instead, are rarely quenched unless they become members of groups ($10^{13-14} M_{\odot}$) or clusters ($\geq10^{14} M_{\odot}$), where the quenched fraction rises to $\sim80\%$. The fraction of low-mass passive galaxies is higher closer to the host center and for more massive hosts. The population of low-mass satellites accreted $\gtrsim$4-6 Gyr ago in massive hosts is almost entirely passive, thus suggesting an upper limit for the time needed for environmental quenching to occur. In fact, $\sim30\%$ of group and cluster satellites that are quenched at $z=0$ were already quenched before falling into their current host, and the bulk of them quenched as early as 4 to 10 billion years ago. For low-mass galaxies ($\lesssim10^{10-10.5}M_{\odot}$), this is due to preprocessing, whereby current satellites may have been members of other hosts, and hence have undergone environmental processes, before falling into their final host, this mechanism being more common and more effective for the purposes of quenching for satellites found today in more massive hosts. The galaxy evolution probe (GEP) is a concept for a probe-class space observatory to study the physical processes related to star formation over cosmic time. To do so, the mid- and far-infrared (IR) spectra of galaxies must be studied. These mid- and far-IR observations require large multi-frequency arrays, sensitive detectors. Our goal is to develop low NEP aluminum kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) for wavelengths of 10–400 $${\upmu }{{\hbox {m}}}$$μm for the GEP and a pathfinder long-duration balloon (GEP-B) that will perform precursor GEP science. KIDs for the lower wavelength range (10–100 $${\upmu }{{\hbox {m}}}$$μm) have not been previously implemented. We present an absorber design for KIDs sensitive to wavelengths of 10 $${\upmu }{{\hbox {m}}}$$μm shown to have around 75–80% absorption efficiency through ANSYS HFSS (high-frequency structure simulator) simulations, challenges that come with optimizing our design to increase the wavelength range, initial tests on our design of fabricated 10 $${\upmu }{{\hbox {m}}}$$μm KIDs, and theoretical NEP calculations.

Ultracompact massive galaxies (ucmgs), i.e., galaxies with stellar masses and effective radii , are very rare systems, in particular at low and intermediate redshifts. Their origin as well as their number density across cosmic time are still under scrutiny, especially because of the paucity of spectroscopically confirmed samples. We have started a systematic census of ucmg candidates within the ESO Kilo Degree Survey, together with a large spectroscopic follow-up campaign to build the largest possible sample of confirmed ucmgs. This is the third paper of the series and the second based on the spectroscopic follow-up program. Here, we present photometrical and structural parameters of 33 new candidates at redshifts and confirm 19 of them as ucmgs, based on their nominal spectroscopically inferred and . This corresponds to a success rate of , nicely consistent with our previous findings. The addition of these 19 newly confirmed objects allows us to fully assess the systematics on the system selection—and to finally reduce the number density uncertainties. Moreover, putting together the results from our current and past observational campaigns and some literature data, we build the largest sample of ucmgs ever collected, comprising 92 spectroscopically confirmed objects at . This number raises to 116, allowing for a 3σ tolerance on the and thresholds for the ucmg definition. For all these galaxies, we have estimated the velocity dispersion values at the effective radii, which have been used to derive a preliminary mass–velocity dispersion correlation.

We study the displacements between the centres of galaxies and their supermassive black holes (BHs) in the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN, and in a variety of observations from the literature. The BHs in Horizon-AGN feel a sub-grid dynamical friction force, sourced by the surrounding gas, which prevents recoiling BHs being ejected from the galaxy. We find that i) the fraction of spatially offset BHs increases with cosmic time, ii) BHs live on prograde orbits in the plane of the galaxy with an orbital radius that decays with time but stalls near $z=0$, and iii) the magnitudes of offsets from the galaxy centres are substantially larger in the simulation than in observations. We attribute the stalling of the infall and excessive offset magnitudes to the fact that dynamical friction from stars and dark matter is not modelled in the simulation, and hence provide a way to improve the black hole dynamics of future simulations., 19 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The majority of galaxies with current star-formation rates (SFRs), SFRo >= 10^-3 Msun/yr, in the Local Cosmological Volume where observations should be reliable, have the property that their observed SFRo is larger than their average star formation rate. This is in tension with the evolution of galaxies described by delayed-tau models, according to which the opposite would be expected. The tension is apparent in that local galaxies imply the star formation timescale tau approx 6.7 Gyr, much longer than the 3.5-4.5 Gyr obtained using an empirically determined main sequence at several redshifts. Using models where the SFR is a power law in time of the form propto (t - t1)^eta for t1 = 1.8 Gyr (with no stars forming prior to t1) implies that eta = 0.18 +- 0.03. This suggested near-constancy of a galaxy's SFR over time raises non-trivial problems for the evolution and formation time of galaxies, but is broadly consistent with the observed decreasing main sequence with increasing age of the Universe., LaTeX, 8 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS, in press; the replacement is to fix an error in the metadata (paper remains unaffected)

Understanding the processes that trigger morphological transformation is central to understanding how and why the Universe transitions from being disc-dominated at early epochs to having the morphological mix that is observed today. We use Horizon-AGN, a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation, to perform a comprehensive study of the processes that drive morphological change in massive (M > 10^10 MSun) galaxies over cosmic time. We show that (1) essentially all the morphological evolution in galaxies that are spheroids at z=0 is driven by mergers with mass ratios greater than 1:10, (2) major mergers alone cannot produce today's spheroid population -- minor mergers are responsible for a third of all morphological transformation over cosmic time and are its dominant driver after z~1, (3) prograde mergers trigger milder morphological transformation than retrograde mergers -- while both types of events produce similar morphological changes at z>2, the average change due to retrograde mergers is around twice that due to their prograde counterparts at z~0, (4) remnant morphology depends strongly on the gas fraction of a merger, with gas-rich mergers routinely re-growing discs, and (5) at a given stellar mass, discs do not exhibit drastically different merger histories from spheroids -- disc survival in mergers is driven by acquisition of cold gas (via cosmological accretion and gas-rich interactions) and a preponderance of prograde mergers in their merger histories., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the connection between environment and the different quenching channels that galaxies are prone to follow in the rest-frame NUVrK colour diagram, as identified by Moutard et al. (2016b). Namely, the fast quenching channel followed by $young$ low-mass galaxies and the slow quenching channel followed by $old$ high-mass ones. We make use of the >22 deg$^2$ covered the VIPERS Multi-Lambda Survey (VIPERS-MLS) to select a galaxy sample complete down to stellar masses of $M_* > 10^{9.4} M_\odot$ at $z < 0.65$ ($M_* > 10^{8.8} M_\odot$ at $z < 0.5$) and including 33,500 (43,000) quiescent galaxies properly selected at $0.2 < z < 0.65$, while being characterized by reliable photometric redshifts ($��_{��z/(1+z)} \leq 0.04$) that we use to measure galaxy local densities. We find that (1) the quiescence of low-mass [$M_* \leq 10^{9.7} M_\odot$] galaxies requires a strong increase of the local density, which confirms the lead role played by environment in their fast quenching and, therefore, confirms that the low-mass upturn observed in the stellar mass function of quiescent galaxies is due to $environmental$ $quenching$. We also observe that (2) the reservoir of low-mass star-forming galaxies located in very dense regions (prone to environmental quenching) has grown between $z \sim 0.6$ and $ z \sim 0.4$ whilst the share of low-mass quiescent galaxies (expected to being environmentally quenched) may have simultaneously increased, which would plead for a rising importance of $environmental$ $quenching$ with cosmic time, compared to $mass$ $quenching$. The dearth of dwarf galaxies in the local universe is hard to reconcile with the large number of low mass haloes expected within the concordance $\Lambda$CDM paradigm. In this paper we perform a systematic evaluation of the uncertainties affecting the measurement of DM halo abundance using galaxy kinematics. Using a large sample of dwarf galaxies with spatially resolved kinematic data we derive a correction to obtain the observed abundance of galaxies as a function of their halo maximum circular velocity from the line-of-sight velocity function in the Local Volume. This estimate provides a direct means of comparing the predictions of theoretical models and simulations (including nonstandard cosmologies and novel galaxy formation physics) to the observational constraints. The new "galactic $V_{max}$" function is steeper than the line-of-sight velocity function but still shallower than the theoretical CDM expectation, showing that some unaccounted physical process is necessary to reduce the abundance of galaxies and/or drastically modify their density profiles compared to CDM haloes. Using this new galactic $V_{max}$ function, we investigate the viability of baryonic solutions such as feedback-powered outflows and photoevaporation of gas from an ionising radiation background. At the 3-$\sigma$ confidence level neither energetic feedback nor photoevaporation are effective enough to reconcile the disagreement. In the case of maximum baryonic effects, the theoretical estimate still deviates significantly from the observations for $V_{max} < 60$ km/s. CDM predicts at least 1.8 times more galaxies with $V_{max} = 50$ km/s and 2.5 times more than observed at $30$ km/s. Recent hydrodynamic simulations seem to resolve the discrepancy but disagree with the properties of observed galaxies with resolved kinematics. We explore the cosmic evolution of the bar length, strength, and light deficit around the bar for 379 barred galaxies at 0.2 < z $\leq$ 0.835 using F814W images from the COSMOS survey. Our sample covers galaxies with stellar mass 10.0 $\leq$ log(M*/Msun) $\leq$ 11.4 and various Hubble types. The bar length is strongly related to the galaxy mass, the disk scale length (h), R50, and R90, where the last two are the radii containing 50 and 90% of total stellar mass, respectively. Bar length remains almost constant, suggesting little or no evolution in bar length over the last 7 Gyrs. The normalized bar lengths (Rbar/h, Rbar/R50, and Rbar/R90) do not show any clear cosmic evolution. Also, the bar strength (A2 and Qb) and the light deficit around the bar reveal little or no cosmic evolution. The constancy of the normalized bar lengths over cosmic time implies that the evolution of bars and of disks is strongly linked over all times. We discuss our results in the framework of predictions from numerical simulations. In Dou et al. (2021), we introduced the Fundamental Formation Relation (FFR), a tight relation between specific SFR (sSFR), H$_2$ star formation efficiency (SFE$_{\rm H_2}$), and the ratio of H$_2$ to stellar mass. Here we show that atomic gas HI does not follow a similar FFR as H$_2$. The relation between SFE$_{\rm HI}$ and sSFR shows significant scatter and strong systematic dependence on all of the key galaxy properties that we have explored. The dramatic difference between HI and H$_2$ indicates that different processes (e.g., quenching by different mechanisms) may have very different effects on the HI in different galaxies and hence produce different SFE$_{\rm HI}$-sSFR relations, while the SFE$_{\rm H_2}$-sSFR relation remains unaffected. The facts that SFE$_{\rm H_2}$-sSFR relation is independent of other key galaxy properties, and that sSFR is directly related to the cosmic time and acts as the cosmic clock, make it natural and very simple to study how different galaxy populations (with different properties and undergoing different processes) evolve on the same SFE$_{\rm H_2}$-sSFR $\sim t$ relation. In the gas regulator model (GRM), the evolution of a galaxy on the SFE$_{\rm H_2}$-sSFR($t$) relation is uniquely set by a single mass-loading parameter $\lambda_{\rm net,H_2}$. This simplicity allows us to accurately derive the H$_2$ supply and removal rates of the local galaxy populations with different stellar masses, from star-forming galaxies to the galaxies in the process of being quenched. We use high-resolution, multi-band imaging of ~16,500 galaxies in the CANDELS fields at 0 < z < 2.5 to study the evolution of color gradients and half-mass radii over cosmic time. We find that galaxy color gradients at fixed mass evolve rapidly between z~2.5 and z~1, but remain roughly constant below z~1. This result implies that the sizes of both star-forming and quiescent galaxies increase much more slowly than previous studies found using half-light radii. The half-mass radius evolution of quiescent galaxies is fully consistent with a model which uses observed minor merger rates to predict the increase in sizes due to the accretion of small galaxies. Progenitor bias may still contribute to the growth of quiescent galaxies, particularly if we assume a slower timescale for the minor merger growth model. The slower half-mass radius evolution of star-forming galaxies is in tension with cosmological simulations and semi-analytic galaxy models. We use the IllustrisTNG cosmological hydrodynamical simulation to study the evolution of star formation rate (SFR)-density relation over cosmic time. We construct several samples of galaxies at different redshifts from $z=2.0$ to $z=0.0$, which have the same comoving number density. The SFR of galaxies decreases with local density at $z=0.0$, but its dependence on local density becomes weaker with redshift. At $z\gtrsim1.0$, the SFR of galaxies increases with local density (reversal of the SFR-density relation), and its dependence becomes stronger with redshift. This change of SFR-density relation with redshift still remains even when fixing the stellar masses of galaxies. The dependence of SFR on the distance to a galaxy cluster also shows a change with redshift in a way similar to the case based on local density, but the reversal happens at a higher redshift, $z\sim1.5$, in clusters. On the other hand, the molecular gas fraction always decreases with local density regardless of redshift at $z=0.0-2.0$ even though the dependence becomes weaker when we fix the stellar mass. Our study demonstrates that the observed reversal of the SFR-density relation at $z\gtrsim1.0$ can be successfully reproduced in cosmological simulations. Our results are consistent with the idea that massive, star-forming galaxies are strongly clustered at high redshifts, forming larger structures. These galaxies then consume their gas faster than those in low-density regions through frequent interactions with other galaxies, ending up being quiescent in the local universe., 10 pages, 8 figures. The formation histories of globular clusters (GCs) are a key diagnostic for understanding their relation to the evolution of the Universe through cosmic time. We use the suite of 25 cosmological zoom-in simulations of present-day Milky Way-mass galaxies from the E-MOSAICS project to study the formation histories of stars, clusters, and GCs, and how these are affected by the environmental dependence of the cluster formation physics. We find that the median lookback time of GC formation in these galaxies is ${\sim}10.73~$Gyr ($z=2.1$), roughly $2.5~$Gyr earlier than that of the field stars (${\sim}8.34~$Gyr or $z=1.1$). The epoch of peak GC formation is mainly determined by the time evolution of the maximum cluster mass, which depends on the galactic environment and largely increases with the gas pressure. Different metallicity subpopulations of stars, clusters and GCs present overlapping formation histories, implying that star and cluster formation represent continuous processes. Current galaxy observations suggest that a roughly linear correlation exists between the [CII] emission and the star formation rate, either as spatially-resolved or integrated quantities. Observationally, this correlation seems to be independent of metallicity, but the very large scatter does not allow to properly assess whether this is true. On the other hand, theoretical models tend to suggest a metallicity dependence of the correlation. In this study, we investigate the metallicity evolution of the correlation via a high-resolution zoom-in cosmological simulation of a dwarf galaxy employing state-of-the-art sub-grid modelling for gas cooling, star formation, and stellar feedback, and that self-consistently evolves the abundances of metal elements out of equilibrium. Our results suggest that the correlation should evolve with metallicity, in agreement with theoretical predictions, but also that this evolution can be hardly detected in observations, because of the large scatter. We also find that most of the [CII] emission is associated with neutral gas at low-intermediate densities, whereas the highest emissivity is produced by the densest regions around star-forming regions., 10 pages, 12 figures; 1 table; accepted for publication by MNRAS

Faint tidal features around galaxies record their merger and interaction histories over cosmic time. Due to their low surface brightnesses and complex morphologies, existing automated methods struggle to detect such features and most work to date has heavily relied on visual inspection. This presents a major obstacle to quantitative study of tidal debris features in large statistical samples, and hence the ability to be able to use these features to advance understanding of the galaxy population as a whole. This paper uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with dropout and augmentation to identify galaxies in the CFHTLS-Wide Survey that have faint tidal features. Evaluating the performance of the CNNs against previously-published expert visual classifications, we find that our method achieves high (76%) completeness and low (20%) contamination, and also performs considerably better than other automated methods recently applied in the literature. We argue that CNNs offer a promising approach to effective automatic identification of low surface brightness tidal debris features in and around galaxies. When applied to forthcoming deep wide-field imaging surveys (e.g. LSST, Euclid), CNNs have the potential to provide a several order-of-magnitude increase in the sample size of morphologically-perturbed galaxies and thereby facilitate a much-anticipated revolution in terms of quantitative low surface brightness science., 16 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The e-MERLIN Galaxy Evolution Survey (eMERGE) is an ambitious, multi-tiered extragalactic radio continuum survey being carried out with e-MERLIN and the VLA at 1.4GHz and 6 GHz. Exploiting the unique combination of high sensitivity and high angular resolution provided by radio interferometry, these observations will provide a powerful, obscuration-independent tool for tracing intense star-formation and AGN activity in galaxies out to z∼5. In our first data release (DR1) we present eMERGE Tier 1, a 15-arcmin pointing centred on the GOODS-N field, imaged at 1.4GHz with the VLA and e-MERLIN at ∼0.28" resolution down to an rms sensitivy of ∼1.2μJy/beam. This unique radio survey – unrivalled at 1.4 GHz in its combination of depth, areal coverage and angular resolution in the pre-SKA era – allows us to localise and separate extended star-forming regions, nuclear starbursts and compact AGN core/jet systems in galaxies over the past two-thirds of cosmic history, a crucial step in tracing the apparently simultaneous growths of the stellar populations and central black holes in massive galaxies. In these proceedings we highlight some early science results from eMERGE DR1, including some examples of the sub-arcsecond morphologies and cold dust properties of 1.4GHz-selected galaxies. eMERGE Tier 1 will eventually reach sub-μJy/beam sensitivity at 0.28" resolution over a 30-arcmin field, providing crucial benchmarks for deep extragalactic surveys which will be undertaken with SKA in the next decade.

We explore the host galaxies of compact-object binaries (black hole–black hole binaries, BHBs; neutron star–black hole binaries, NSBHs; double–neutron stars; DNSs) across cosmic time, by means of population-synthesis simulations combined with the Illustris cosmological simulation. At high redshift (z ≳ 4), the host galaxies of BHBs, NSBHs, and DNSs are very similar and are predominantly low-mass galaxies (stellar mass M < 1011 M⊙). If z ≳ 4, most compact objects form and merge in the same galaxy, with a short delay time. At low redshift (z ≤ 2), the host galaxy populations of DNSs differ significantly from the host galaxies of both BHBs and NSBHs. DNSs merging at low redshift tend to form and merge in the same galaxy, with relatively short delay time. The stellar mass of DNS hosts peaks around ∼1010–1011 M⊙. In contrast, BHBs and NSBHs merging at low redshift tend to form in rather small galaxies at high redshift and then to merge in larger galaxies with long delay times. This difference between DNSs and black hole binaries is a consequence of their profoundly different metallicity dependence.

One of the fundamental assumptions of chemical evolution models (CEMs) of the Milky Way (MW) and other spirals is that higher gas accretion rates are expected in the past, and in the inner regions of the Galaxy. This leads to the so-called `inside-out disc formation scenario'. Yet, these are probably the most unconstrained inputs of such models. In the present paper, we aim at investigating these main assumptions by studying how gas is accreted in four simulated MW-like galaxies assembled within the $\Lambda$CDM scenario. The galaxies were obtained using two different simulation techniques, cosmological setups and initial conditions. Two of them are MW candidates corresponding to the chemodynamical model of Minchev et al. (2013, 2014) (known as MCM) and the Local Group cosmological simulation of Nuza et al. (2014). We investigate vertical and radial gas accretion on to galaxy discs as a function of cosmic time and disc radius. We find that accretion in the MW-like galaxies seem to happen in two distinct phases, namely: an early, more violent period; followed by a subsequent, slowly declining phase. Our simulations seem to give support to the assumption that the amount of gas incorporated into the MW disc exponentially decreases with time, leading to current net accretion rates of $0.6-1\,$M$_\odot\,$yr$^{-1}$. In particular, accretion timescales on to the simulated thin-disc-like structures are within $\sim5-7\,$Gyr, consistent with expectations from CEMs. Moreover, our simulated MW discs are assembled from the inside-out with gas in the inner disc regions accreted in shorter timescales than in external ones, in qualitative agreement with CEMs of the Galaxy. Galaxies’ development and progress are the major problems in cosmology. Evolution of galaxies plays a vital role in cosmographic senses. Several researchers found that galaxies’ evolution takes place by merging different subsystems. These subsystems form the basis for the galaxy evolution. Also, cosmic time depends on lens statistics which is associated with the quality of lens statistics. Galaxy development depends on the factors like masses surrounding the galaxies. In this study, we formulated models which help in understating the formulation of galaxies with the help of support vector machines embedded with genetic algorithms. The models which are formulated depend on the distribution function of galaxies. Datasets are analysed with the help of HST rules. The major contribution of the anti-evolutionary model is to identify the small angle of separation of galaxies more precisely. This study is carried out on the publicly available EDGE database. This paper describes the analysis of galaxies with genetic algorithms.

Observationally, the fraction of blue satellite galaxies decreases steeply with host halo mass, and their radial distribution around central galaxies is significantly shallower in massive (M_* >10e11M_sun) than in Milky Way like systems. Theoretical models, based primarily on semi-analytical techniques, have had a long-standing problem with reproducing these trends, instead predicting too few blue satellites in general but also estimating a radial distribution that is too shallow, regardless of primary mass. In this Letter, we use the Illustris cosmological simulation to study the properties of satellite galaxies around isolated primaries. For the first time, we find good agreement between theory and observations. We identify the main source of this success relative to earlier work to be a consequence of the large gas contents of satellites at infall, a factor ~5-10 times larger than in semi-analytical models. Because of their relatively large gas reservoirs, satellites can continue to form stars long after infall, with a typical timescale for star-formation to be quenched ~2 Gyr in groups but more than ~5 Gyr for satellites around Milky Way like primaries. The gas contents we infer are consistent with z=0 observations of HI gas in galaxies, although we find large discrepancies among reported values in the literature. A testable prediction of our model is that the gas-to-stellar mass ratio of satellite progenitors should vary only weakly with cosmic time., 5 pages, 3 figures. Understanding the processes that drive the formation of black holes (BHs) is a key topic in observational cosmology. While the observed $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$--$M_{\mathrm{Bulge}}$ correlation in bulge-dominated galaxies is thought to be produced by major mergers, the existence of a $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$--$M_{\star}$ relation, across all galaxy morphological types, suggests that BHs may be largely built by secular processes. Recent evidence that bulge-less galaxies, which are unlikely to have had significant mergers, are offset from the $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$--$M_{\mathrm{Bulge}}$ relation, but lie on the $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$--$M_{\star}$ relation, has strengthened this hypothesis. Nevertheless, the small size and heterogeneity of current datasets, coupled with the difficulty in measuring precise BH masses, makes it challenging to address this issue using empirical studies alone. Here, we use Horizon-AGN, a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation to probe the role of mergers in BH growth over cosmic time. We show that (1) as suggested by observations, simulated bulge-less galaxies lie offset from the main $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$--$M_{\mathrm{Bulge}}$ relation, but on the $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$--$M_{\star}$ relation, (2) the positions of galaxies on the $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$--$M_{\star}$ relation are not affected by their merger histories and (3) only $\sim$35 per cent of the BH mass in today's massive galaxies is directly attributable to merging -- the majority ($\sim$65 per cent) of BH growth, therefore, takes place gradually, via secular processes, over cosmic time., 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the effects of the local environment on the molecular gas content of a large sample of log($M_{*}$/$M_{\odot}$) $\gtrsim$ 10 star-forming and starburst galaxies with specific star-formation rates (sSFRs) on and above the main sequence (MS) to $z$ $\sim$ 3.5. ALMA observations of the dust continuum in the COSMOS field are used to estimate molecular gas masses at $z$ $\approx$ 0.5-3.5. We also use a local universe sample from the ALFALFA HI survey after converting it into molecular masses. The molecular mass ($M_{ISM}$) scaling relation shows a dependence on $z$, $M_{*}$, and sSFR relative to the MS, but no dependence on environmental overdensity $\Delta$ ($M_{ISM}$ $\propto$ $\Delta^{0.03}$). Similarly, gas mass fraction (f$_{gas}$) and depletion timescale ($\tau$) show no environmental dependence to $z$ $\sim$ 3.5. At $\langle z\rangle$ $\sim$ 1.8, the average $\langle M_{ISM}\rangle$,$\langle$f$_{gas}\rangle$, and $\langle \tau \rangle$ in densest regions is (1.6$\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{11}$ $M_{\odot}$, 55$\pm$2%, and 0.8$\pm$0.1 Gyr, respectively, similar to those in the lowest density bin. Independent of the environment, f$_{gas}$ decreases and $\tau$ increases with increasing cosmic time. Cosmic molecular mass density ($\rho$) in the lowest density bins peaks at $z$ $\sim$ 1-2, and this peak happens at $z$ $, Comment: ApJ published

Using a novel approach, we study the quenching and bursting of galaxies as a function of stellar mass ($M_{*}$), local environment ($\Sigma$), and specific star-formation rate (sSFR) using a large spectroscopic sample of $\sim$ 123,000 $GALEX$/SDSS and $\sim$ 420 $GALEX$/COSMOS/LEGA-C galaxies to $z$ $\sim$ 1. We show that out to $z$ $\sim$ 1 and at fixed sSFR and local density, on average, less massive galaxies are quenching, whereas more massive systems are bursting, with a quenching/bursting transition at log($M_{*}$/$M_{\odot}$) $\sim$ 10.5-11 and likely a short quenching/bursting timescale ($\lesssim$ 300 Myr). We find that much of the bursting of star-formation happens in massive (log($M_{*}$/$M_{\odot}$) $\gtrsim$ 11), high sSFR galaxies (log(sSFR/Gyr$^{-1}$) $\gtrsim$ -2), particularly those in the field (log($\Sigma$/Mpc$^{-2}$) $\lesssim$ 0; and among group galaxies, satellites more than centrals). Most of the quenching of star-formation happens in low-mass (log($M_{*}$/$M_{\odot}$) $\lesssim$ 9), low sSFR galaxies (log(sSFR/Gyr$^{-1}$) $\lesssim$ -2), in particular those located in dense environments (log($\Sigma$/Mpc$^{-2}$) $\gtrsim$ 1), indicating the combined effects of $M_{*}$ and $\Sigma$ in quenching/bursting of galaxies since $z$ $\sim$ 1. However, we find that stellar mass has stronger effects than environment on recent quenching/bursting of galaxies to $z$ $\sim$ 1. At any given $M_{*}$, sSFR, and environment, centrals are quenchier (quenching faster) than satellites in an average sense. We also find evidence for the strength of mass and environmental quenching being stronger at higher redshift. Recent discoveries of massive black holes (MBHs) in dwarf galaxies suggest that they may have a more common presence than once thought. Systematic searches are revealing more candidates, but this process could be accelerated by predictions from simulations. We perform a study of several high-resolution, cosmological, zoom-in simulations focusing on dwarf galaxies that host massive black holes at z = 0, with the aim of determining when the black holes are most observable. Larger dwarf galaxies are more likely to host MBHs than those of lower mass. About 50% of the MBHs in dwarfs are not centrally located, but rather are wandering within a few kpc of the galaxy center. The accretion luminosities of MBHs in dwarfs are low throughout cosmic time, rendering them extremely difficult to detect. We have analysed a sample of 574 Spitzer 4.5 micron-selected galaxies with [4.5]24 (AB) over the UltraVISTA ultra-deep COSMOS field. Our aim is to investigate whether these mid-IR bright, near-IR faint sources contribute significantly to the overall population of massive galaxies at redshifts z>=3. By performing a spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis using up to 30 photometric bands, we have determined that the redshift distribution of our sample peaks at redshifts z~2.5-3.0, and ~32% of the galaxies lie at z>=3. We have studied the contribution of these sources to the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) at high redshifts. We found that the [4.5]24 galaxies produce a negligible change to the GSMF previously determined for Ks_auto~50% of the galaxies with stellar masses Mst>~6 x 10^10 Msun. To use the luminous gamma-ray bursts and their afterglows as messengers from the early Universe has been advocated ever since the discovery of the cosmological nature of the GRB phenomenon in the late nineties. It took, however, until the advent of Swift to detect high-redshift GRBs in significant numbers, and to provide the localization capabilities to enable statistical samples of GRBs free of selection biases and complete in redshift. I will present and discuss some of the recent progress in the field, with an emphasize on new results derived from sample studies and their implications for the nature of GRBs and their host galaxies. I will particularly focus on observations made with the seven-channel imager GROND and X-shooter, an optical/NIR echelle spectrograph mounted at the Very Large Telescope since 2009. Massive (Mstellar ⩾ 5×1010 M⊙) Early-Type Galaxies (ETGs) must build an outer stellar envelope over cosmic time in order to account for their remarkable size evolution. This is similar to what occurs to nearby Late-Type Galaxies (LTGs), which create their stellar haloes out of the debris of lower mass systems. We analysed the outer parts of massive ETGs at z < 1 by exploiting the Hubble Ultra Deep Field imaging. These galaxies store 10-30% of their stellar mass at distances 10 < R/kpc < 50, in contrast to the low percentages (< 5%) found for LTGs. We find evidence for a progressive outskirt development with redshift driven solely via merging.

Galaxy formation entails the hierarchical assembly of mass, along with the condensation of baryons and the ensuing, self-regulating star formation. The stars form a collisionless system whose orbit distribution retains dynamical memory that can constrain a galaxy's formation history. The ordered-rotation dominated orbits with near maximum circularity $\lambda_z \simeq1$ and the random-motion dominated orbits with low circularity $\lambda_z \simeq0$ are called kinematically cold and kinematically hot, respectively. The fraction of stars on `cold' orbits, compared to the fraction of stars on `hot' orbits, speaks directly to the quiescence or violence of the galaxies' formation histories. Here we present such orbit distributions, derived from stellar kinematic maps via orbit-based modelling for a well defined, large sample of 300 nearby galaxies. The sample, drawn from the CALIFA survey, includes the main morphological galaxy types and spans the total stellar mass range from $10^{8.7}$ to $10^{11.9}$ solar masses. Our analysis derives the orbit-circularity distribution as a function of galaxy mass, $p(\lambda_z~|~M_\star)$, and its volume-averaged total distribution, $p(\lambda_z)$. We find that across most of the considered mass range and across morphological types, there are more stars on `warm' orbits defined as $0.25\le \lambda_z \le 0.8$ than on either `cold' or `hot' orbits. The Chandra Deep Fields (CDFs), being a major thrust among extragalactic X-ray surveys and complemented effectively by multiwavelength observations, have critically contributed to our dramatically improved characterization of the 0.5-8 keV cosmic X-ray background sources, the vast majority of which are distant active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and starburst and normal galaxies. In this review, I highlight some recent key observational results, mostly from the CDFs, on the AGN demography, the interactions between AGNs and their host galaxies, the evolution of non-active galaxy X-ray emission, and the census of X-ray galaxy groups and clusters through cosmic time, after providing the necessary background information. We present measurements of the surface density of star formation, the star-forming clump luminosity function, and the clump size distribution function, for the lensed galaxy SGAS J111020.0+645950.8 at a redshift of z =2.481. The physical size scales that we probe, radii r = 30-50 pc, are considerably smaller scales than have yet been studied at these redshifts. The star formation surface density we find within these small clumps is consistent with surface densities measured previously for other lensed galaxies at similar redshift. Twenty-two percent of the rest-frame ultraviolet light in this lensed galaxy arises from small clumps, with r is less than 100 pc. Within the range of overlap, the clump luminosity function measured for this lensed galaxy is remarkably similar to those of z is approximately 0 galaxies. In this galaxy, star-forming regions smaller than 100 pc-physical scales not usually resolved at these redshifts by current telescopes-are important locations of star formation in the distant universe. If this galaxy is representative, this may contradict the theoretical picture in which the critical size scale for star formation in the distant universe is of order 1 kiloparsec. Instead, our results suggest that current telescopes have not yet resolved the critical size scales of star-forming activity in galaxies over most of cosmic time.

Multiwavelength deep observations are a key tool to understand the origin of the diffuse light in clusters of galaxies: the intra-cluster light (ICL). For this reason, we take advantage of the Hubble Frontier Fields survey to investigate the properties of the stellar populations of the ICL of its 6 massive intermediate redshift (0.3 10^15 Msol) clusters is formed by the stripping of MW-like objects that have been accreted at z, Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to MNRAS, first referee comments incorporated. In cosmological simulations, a large fraction of the partial Lyman limit systems (pLLSs; \(16\lesssim \log N_{\text{HI}} 2) redshifts. Here I discuss unambiguous evidence for metal-poor gas at all z probed by the pLLSs and LLSs. At z < 1, all the pLLSs and LLSs so far studied are located in the CGM of galaxies with projected distances \(\lesssim\) 100–200 kpc. Regardless of the exact origin of the low-metallicity pLLSs/LLSs, there is a significant mass of cool, dense, low-metallicity gas in the CGM that may be available as fuel for continuing star formation in galaxies over cosmic time. As such, the metal-poor pLLSs and LLSs are currently among the best observational evidence of cold, metal-poor gas accretion onto galaxies.

We present 1.3- and/or 3-mm continuum images and 3-mm spectral scans, obtained using NOEMA and ALMA, of 21 distant, dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). Our sample is a subset of the galaxies selected by Ivison et al. (2016) on the basis of their extremely red far-infrared (far-IR) colours and low {\it Herschel} flux densities; most are thus expected to be unlensed, extraordinarily luminous starbursts at $z \gtrsim 4$, modulo the considerable cross-section to gravitational lensing implied by their redshift. We observed 17 of these galaxies with NOEMA and four with ALMA, scanning through the 3-mm atmospheric window. We have obtained secure redshifts for seven galaxies via detection of multiple CO lines, one of them a lensed system at $z=6.027$ (two others are also found to be lensed); a single emission line was detected in another four galaxies, one of which has been shown elsewhere to lie at $z=4.002$. Where we find no spectroscopic redshifts, the galaxies are generally less luminous by 0.3-0.4 dex, which goes some way to explaining our failure to detect line emission. We show that this sample contains amongst the most luminous known star-forming galaxies. Due to their extreme star-formation activity, these galaxies will consume their molecular gas in $\lesssim 100$ Myr, despite their high molecular gas masses, and are therefore plausible progenitors of the massive, `red-and-dead' elliptical galaxies at $z \approx 3$., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS
