Search

The gas needed to sustain star formation in galaxies is supplied by the circumgalactic medium (CGM), which in turn is affected by accretion from large scales. In a series of two papers, we examine the interplay between a galaxy's ambient CGM and central star formation within the context of the large-scale environment. We use the IllustrisTNG-100 simulation to show that the influence exerted by the large-scale galaxy environment on the CGM gas angular momentum results in either enhanced (Paper I) or suppressed (Paper II, this paper) star formation inside a galaxy. We find that for present-day quenched galaxies, both the large-scale environments and the ambient CGM have always had higher angular momenta throughout their evolutionary history since at least $z=2$, in comparison to those around present-day star-forming disk galaxies, resulting in less efficient gas inflow into the central star-forming gas reservoirs. A sufficiently high CGM angular momentum, as inherited from the larger-scale environment, is thus an important factor in keeping a galaxy quenched, once it is quenched. The process above naturally renders two key observational signatures: (1) a coherent rotation pattern existing across multiple distances from the large-scale galaxy environment, to the circumgalactic gas, to the central stellar disk; and (2) an anti-correlation between galaxy star-formation rates and orbital angular momenta of interacting galaxy pairs or groups., 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper we present our imaging observations on the CO (7−6) line and its underlying continuum emission of the young submillimeter galaxy LESS 073 at redshift 4.755, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). At the achieved resolution of ∼1 ′′ .2 × 0 ′′ .9 (8 × 6 kpc2 ), the CO (7−6) emission is largely unresolved (with a deconvolved size of 1′′ .1(±0 ′′ .5) × 0 ′′ .9(±0 ′′ .8).), and the continuum emission is totally unresolved. The CO (7−6) line emission has an integrated flux of 0.86 ± 0.08 Jy km s−1 , and a line width of 343 ± 40 km s−1 . The continuum emission has a flux density of 0.51 mJy. By fitting the observed far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distribution of LESS 073 with a single-temperature modified blackbody function, we obtained a dust temperature Tdust = 57.6 ± 3.5 K, 60-to-100 µm flux density ratio f60/f100 = 0.86 ± 0.08, and total infrared luminosity LIR = (5.8±0.9)×1012 L⊙. The SED-fit-based f60/f100 is consistent with those estimated from various line ratios as advocated by our earlier work, indicating that those proposed line-ratiobased method can be used to practically derive f60/f100 for high-z sources. The total molecular gas mass of LESS 073 is (3.3 ± 1.7) × 1010 M⊙, and the inferred gas depletion time is about 43 Myr.

We present high-resolution (0.17\arcsec $\times$ 0.14\arcsec) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the CO\,(6-5) line, and 435\um\ dust continuum emission within a $\sim$9\arcsec $\times$ 9\arcsec\ area centered on the nucleus of the galaxy NGC\,5135. NGC\,5135 is a well-studied luminous infrared galaxy that also harbors a Compton-thick active galactic nucleus (AGN). At the achieved resolution of 48 $\times$ 40\,pc, the CO\,(6-5) and dust emissions are resolved into gas "clumps" along the symmetrical dust lanes associated with the inner stellar bar. The clumps have radii between $\sim$45-180\,pc and CO\,(6-5) line widths of $\sim$60-88\,\kms. The CO\,(6-5) to dust continuum flux ratios vary among the clumps and show an increasing trend with the \FeII/Br-$\gamma$ ratios, which we interpret as evidence for supernova-driven shocked gas providing a significant contribution to the \co65\ emission. The central AGN is undetected in continuum, nor in CO\,(6-5) if its line velocity width is no less than $\sim$\,40\,\kms. We estimate that the AGN contributes at most 1\% of the integrated CO\,(6-5) flux of 512 $\pm$ 24$\,$Jy\kms\ within the ALMA field of view, which in turn accounts for $\sim$32\% of the CO\,(6-5) flux of the whole galaxy., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) imaging in the [NII] 205 micron fine-structure line (hereafter [NII]) and the underlying continuum of BRI 1202-0725, an interacting galaxy system at $z =$ 4.7, consisting of an optical QSO, a sub-millimeter galaxy (SMG) and two Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs), all within $\sim$25 kpc of the QSO. We detect the QSO and SMG in both [NII] and continuum. At the $\sim$$1"$ (or 6.6 kpc) resolution, both QSO and SMG are resolved in [NII], with the de-convolved major axes of $\sim$9 and $\sim$14 kpc, respectively. In contrast, their continuum emissions are much more compact and unresolved even at an enhanced resolution of $\sim$$0.7"$. The ratio of the [NII] flux to the existing CO (7$-$6) flux is used to constrain the dust temperature ($T_{\rm dust}$) for a more accurate determination of the FIR luminosity $L_{\rm FIR}$. Our best estimated $T_{\rm dust}$ equals $43 (\pm 2)$ K for both galaxies (assuming an emissivity index $\beta = 1.8$). The resulting $L_{\rm CO(7-6)}/L_{\rm FIR}$ ratios are statistically consistent with that of local luminous infrared galaxies, confirming that $L_{\rm CO(7-6)}$ traces the star formation (SF) rate (SFR) in these galaxies. We estimate that the on-going SF of the QSO (SMG) has a SFR of 5.1 $(6.9) \times 10^3 M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ ($\pm$ 30%) assuming Chabrier initial mass function, takes place within a diameter (at half maximum) of 1.3 (1.5) kpc, and shall consume the existing 5 $(5) \times 10^{11} M_{\odot}$ of molecular gas in 10 $(7) \times 10^7$ years., Comment: 4 pages, 1 table, 4 figures; accepted for publication in the ApJ Letters

We present our high-resolution ($0^{\prime\prime}.15\times0^{\prime\prime}.13$, $\sim$34 pc) observations of the CO(6-5) line emission, which probes the warm and dense molecular gas, and the 434 $\mu$m dust continuum emission in the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy IC 5179, conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). The CO(6-5) emission is spatially distributed in filamentary structures with many dense cores and shows a velocity field that is characteristic of a circum-nuclear rotating gas disk, with 90% of the rotation speed arising within a radius of $\lesssim150$ pc. At the scale of our spatial resolution, the CO(6-5) and dust emission peaks do not always coincide, with their surface brightness ratio varying by a factor of $\sim$10. This result suggests that their excitation mechanisms are likely different, as further evidenced by the Southwest to Northeast spatial gradient of both CO-to-dust continuum ratio and Pa-$\alpha$ equivalent width. Within the nuclear region (radius$\sim$300 pc) and with a resolution of $\sim$34 pc, the CO line flux (dust flux density) detected in our ALMA observations is $180\pm18$ Jy km/s ($71\pm7$ mJy), which account for 22% (2.4%) of the total value measured by Herschel., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

In this paper, we present the measurements of the [NII] 205micron line ([NII]205) for a flux-limited sample of 122 (ultra-)luminous infrared galaxies [(U)LIRGs] and 20 additional normal galaxies, obtained with the Herschel Space Observatory. We explore the far-infrared (FIR) color dependence of the [NII]205 (L[NII]205) to the total infrared (LIR) luminosity ratio, and find that L[NII]205/LIR only depends modestly on the 70-to-160 micron flux density ratio (f70/f160) when f70/f160 0.6. We also investigate the relation between L[NII]205 and star formation rate (SFR), and show that L[NII]205 has a nearly linear correlation with SFR, albeit the intercept of such relation varies somewhat with f60/f100, consistent with our previous conclusion that \NIIab\ emission can serve as a SFR indicator with an accuracy of ~0.4 dex, or ~0.2 dex if f60/f100 is known independently. Furthermore, together with the ISO measurements of [NII] 122 micron emission we use a total of ~200 galaxies to derive the local [NII]205 luminosity function (LF) by tying it to the known IR LF with a bivariate method. As a practical application, we also compute the local SFR volume density ($\dot{\rho}_{\rm SFR}$) using the newly derived SFR calibrator and LF. The resulting $\log\,\dot{\rho}_{\rm SFR} = -1.96\pm0.11$ $M_\odot$\,yr$^{-1}$\,Mpc$^{-3}$ agrees well with previous studies. Finally, we determine the electron densities ($n_e$) of the ionized medium for a subsample of 12 (U)LIRGs with both [NII]205 and [NII]122 data, and find that $n_e$ is in the range of ~1-100 cm$^{-3}$, with a median value of 22 cm$^{-3}$, Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present Spitzer observations for a sample of close major-merger galaxy pairs (KPAIR sample) selected from 2MASS/SDSS-DR3 cross-matches. The goals are to study the star formation activity in these galaxies and to set a local bench mark for the cosmic evolution of close major mergers. The Spitzer KPAIR sample (27 pairs, 54 galaxies) includes all spectroscopically confirmed S+S and S+E pairs in a parent sample that is complete for primaries brighter than K=12.5 mag, projected separations of 5< s < 20 kpc/h, and mass ratios, 73 pages; accpected by ApJ

This paper presents galaxy source counts at 24 microns in the six Spitzer Wide-field InfraRed Extragalactic (SWIRE) fields. The source counts are compared to counts in other fields, and to model predictions that have been updated since the launch of Spitzer. This analysis confirms a very steep rise in the Euclidean-normalized differential number counts between 2 mJy and 0.3 mJy. Variations in the counts between fields show the effects of sample variance in the flux range 0.5-10 mJy, up to 100% larger than Poisson errors. Nonetheless, a "shoulder" in the normalized counts persists at around 3 mJy. The peak of the normalized counts at 0.3 mJy is higher and narrower than most models predict. In the ELAIS N1 field, the 24 micron data are combined with Spitzer-IRAC data and five-band optical imaging, and these bandmerged data are fit with photometric redshift templates. Above 1 mJy the counts are dominated by galaxies at z less than 0.3. By 300 microJy, about 25% are between z ~ 0.3-0.8, and a significant fraction are at z ~ 1.3-2. At low redshifts the counts are dominated by spirals, and starbursts rise in number density to outnumber the spirals' contribution to the counts below 1 mJy.

To better characterize the global star formation (SF) activity in a galaxy, one needs to know not only the star formation rate (SFR) but also the rest-frame, far-infrared (FIR) color (e.g., the 60-to-100 $\mu$m color, $C(60/100)$] of the dust emission. The latter probes the average intensity of the dust heating radiation field and scales statistically with the effective SFR surface density in star-forming galaxies including (ultra-)luminous infrared galaxies [(U)LIRGs]. To this end, we exploit here a new spectroscopic approach involving only two emission lines: CO\,(7$-$6) at 372 $\mu$m and [NII] at 205 $\mu$m. For local (U)LIRGs, the ratios of the CO (7$-$6) luminosity ($L_{\rm CO\,(7-6)}$) to the total infrared luminosity ($L_{\rm IR}$; 8$-$1000 $\mu$m) are fairly tightly distributed (to within $\sim$0.12 dex) and show little dependence on $C(60/100)$. This makes $L_{\rm CO\,(7-6)}$ a good SFR tracer, which is less contaminated by active galactic nuclei (AGN) than $L_{\rm IR}$ and may also be much less sensitive to metallicity than $L_{\rm CO\,(1-0)}$. Furthermore, the logarithmic [NII] 205 $\mu$m to CO (7$-$6) luminosity ratio is fairly steeply (at a slope of $\sim$$-1.4$) correlated with $C(60/100)$, with a modest scatter ($\sim$0.23 dex). This makes it a useful estimator on $C(60/100)$ with an implied uncertainty of $\sim$0.15 [or $\lesssim$4 K in the dust temperature ($T_{\rm dust}$) in the case of a graybody emission with $T_{\rm dust} \gtrsim 30$ K and a dust emissivity index $\beta \ge 1$]. We exploit deep combined observations with Spitzer and Chandra of the SWIRE survey in the ELAIS-N1 region, to investigate the nature of the faint X-ray and IR sources in common, to identify AGN/starburst diagnostics, and to study the sources of the X-ray and IR cosmic backgrounds. In the 17'x17' area of the Chandra ACIS-I image there are 3400 SWIRE near-IR sources with 4 sigma detections in at least 2 IRAC bands and 988 sources detected at 24micron with MIPS brighter than 0.1 mJy. Of these, 102 IRAC and 59 MIPS sources have Chandra counterparts, out of a total of 122 X-ray sources present in the area with S(0.5-8 kev)>10^(-15) erg/cm^2/s. We have constructed SEDs for each source using data from the 4 IRAC wavebands, Chandra fluxes, and optical follow-up data in the wavebands U, g', r', i', Z, and H. We fit a number of spectral templates to the SEDs at optical and infrared wavelengths to determine photometric redshifts and spectral categories, and also make use of diagnostics based on the X-ray luminosities, hardness ratios, X-ray to infrared spectral slopes and optical morphologies. Although we have spectroscopic redshifts for only a minority of the Chandra sources, the available SEDs constrain the redshifts for most of the sample sources, which turn out to be typically at 0.5, Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ, March 2005 issue

We present the first Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV images of the well-known interacting group of galaxies, Stephan's Quintet (SQ). We detect widespread UV emission throughout the group. However, there is no consistent coincidence between UV structure and emission in the optical, Hα, or H I. Excluding the foreground galaxy NGC 7320 (Sd), most of the UV emission is found in regions associated with the two spiral members of the group, NGC 7319 and NGC 7318b, and the intragroup medium starburst SQ-A. The extinction-corrected UV data are analyzed to investigate the overall star formation activity in SQ. We find that the total star formation rate (SFR) of SQ is 6.69 ± 0.65 M☉ yr-1. Of this, 1.34 ± 0.16 M☉ yr-1 is due to SQ-A. This is in excellent agreement with that derived from the extinction-corrected Hα luminosity of SQ-A. The SFR in regions related to NGC 7319 is 1.98 ± 0.58 M☉ yr-1, most of which (68%) is contributed by the disk. The contribution from the young tail is only 15%. In the UV, the young tail is more extended (~100 kpc) and shows a looplike structure, including the optical tail, the extragalactic H II regions recently discovered in Hα, and other UV emission regions discovered for the first time. The UV and optical colors of the old tail are consistent with a single stellar population of age t 108.5±0.4 yr. The UV emission associated with NGC 7318b is found in a very large (~80 kpc) disk, with a net SFR of 3.37 ± 0.25 M☉ yr-1. Several large UV emission regions are 30-40 kpc away from the nucleus of NGC 7318b. Although both NGC 7319 and NGC 7318b show peculiar UV morphology, their SFR is consistent with that of normal Sbc galaxies, indicating that the strength of star formation activity is not enhanced by interactions.

Number Counts of galaxies in two GALEX bands (FUV: 1530A and NUV: 2310A, both in AB magnitudes) are reported. They provide for the first time in the literature homogeneously calibrated number counts of UV galaxies covering continuously a very wide range of UV magnitude (14 -- 23.8). Both the FUV and NUV counts are inconsistent with a non-evolution model, while they are in good agreement with evolution models (essentially luminosity evolution) derived from the high-z UV luminosity functions of Arnouts et al. (2004). It is found that the contribution from galaxies detected by GALEX to the UV background is 0.68+-0.10 nW m-2 sr-1 at 1530A and 0.99+-0.15 nW m-2 sr-1 at 2310A. These are 66+-9% and 44+-6% of the total contributions of galaxies to the the UV background at 1530A, respectively, as estimated using the evolution models. ...

We present, for the first time, a statistical study of [N II] 205 mciron line emission for a large sample of local luminous infrared galaxies using Herschel Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver Fourier Transform Spectrometer (SPIRE FTS) data. For our sample of galaxies, we investigate the correlation between the [N II] luminosity (LNII) and the total infrared luminosity (LIR), as well as the dependence of LNII/LIR ratio on LIR, far infrared colors (IRAS $f_{60}/f_{100}$) and the [O III] 88 micron to [N II] luminosity ratio. We find that LNII correlates almost linearly with LIR for non AGN galaxies (all having $L_{IR} < 10^{12} L_solar$) in our sample, which implies that LNII can serve as a SFR tracer which is particularly useful for high redshift galaxies which will be observed with forthcoming submm spectroscopic facilities such as the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Our analysis shows that the deviation from the mean LNII-LIR relation correlates with tracers of the ionization parameter, which suggests the scatter in this relation is mainly due to the variations in the hardness, and/or ionization parameter, of the ambient galactic UV field among the sources in our sample., 6 emulateapj pages, 3 figures; ApJ Letter accepted

We present an analysis of dust properties of a sample of close major-merger galaxy pairs selected by K_s magnitude and redshift. The pairs represent the two populations of spiral-spiral (S+S) and mixed morphology spiral-elliptical (S+E). The CIGALE (Code Investigating GALaxy Emission) is used to fit dust models to the 2MASS, WISE and Herschel flux density measurements and derive the parameters describing the PAH contribution, interstellar radiation field (ISRF) and photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). Model fits verify our previous Spitzer Space Telescope analysis that S+S and S+E pairs do not have the same level of enhancement of star formation and differ in dust composition. The spirals of mixed morphology galaxy pairs do not exhibit the enhancements in interstellar radiation field and therefore dust temperature for spirals in S+S pairs in contrast to what would be expected according to standard models of gas redistribution due to encounter torques. This suggests the importance of the companion environment/morphology in determining the dust properties of a spiral galaxy in a close major-merger pair., Comment: accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

The evolution of compact groups of galaxies may represent one of the few places in the nearby universe in which massive galaxies are being forged through a complex set of processes involving tidal interaction, ram-pressure stripping, and perhaps finally "dry-mergers" of galaxies stripped of their cool gas. Using collisionless N-body simulations, we propose a possible scenario for the formation of one of the best studied compact groups: Stephan's Quintet. We define a serial approach which allows us to consider the history of the group as sequence of galaxy-galaxy interactions seen as relatively separate events in time, but chained together in such a way as to provide a plausible scenario that ends in the current configuration of the galaxies. By covering a large set of parameters, we claim that it is very unlikely that both major tidal tails of the group have been created by the interaction between the main galaxy and a single intruder. We propose instead a scenario based on two satellites orbiting the main disk, plus the recent involvement of an additional interloper, coming from the background at high speed. This purely N-body study of the quintet will provide a parameter-space exploration of the basic dynamics of the group that can be used as a basis for a more sophisticated N-body/hydrodynamic study of the group that is necessary to explain the giant shock structure and other purely gaseous phenomena observed in both the cold, warm and hot gas in the group., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures. We study dust attenuation and stellar mass of $\rm z\sim 0.6$ star-forming galaxies using new SWIRE observations in IR and GALEX observations in UV. Two samples are selected from the SWIRE and GALEX source catalogs in the SWIRE/GALEX field ELAIS-N1-00 ($\Omega = 0.8$ deg$^2$). The UV selected sample has 600 galaxies with photometric redshift (hereafter photo-z) $0.5 \leq z \leq 0.7$ and NUV$\leq 23.5$ (corresponding to $\rm L_{FUV} \geq 10^{9.6} L_\sun$). The IR selected sample contains 430 galaxies with $f_{24\mu m} \geq 0.2$ mJy ($\rm L_{dust} \geq 10^{10.8} L_\sun$) in the same photo-z range. It is found that the mean $\rm L_{dust}/L_{FUV}$ ratios of the z=0.6 UV galaxies are consistent with that of their z=0 counterparts of the same $\rm L_{FUV}$. For IR galaxies, the mean $\rm L_{dust}/L_{FUV}$ ratios of the z=0.6 LIRGs ($\rm L_{dust} \sim 10^{11} L_\sun$) are about a factor of 2 lower than local LIRGs, whereas z=0.6 ULIRGs ($\rm L_{dust} \sim 10^{12} L_\sun$) have the same mean $\rm L_{dust}/L_{FUV}$ ratios as their local counterparts. This is consistent with the hypothesis that the dominant component of LIRG population has changed from large, gas rich spirals at z$>0.5$ to major-mergers at z=0. The stellar mass of z=0.6 UV galaxies of $\rm L_{FUV} \leq 10^{10.2} L_\sun$ is about a factor 2 less than their local counterparts of the same luminosity, indicating growth of these galaxies. The mass of z=0.6 UV lunmous galaxies (UVLGs: $\rm L_{FUV} > 10^{10.2} L_\sun$) and IR selected galaxies, which are nearly exclusively LIRGs and ULIRGs, is the same as their local counterparts., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, to be published in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement series dedicated to GALEX results

We study two samples of local galaxies, one is UV (GALEX) selected and the other FIR (IRAS) selected, to address the question whether UV and FIR surveys see the two sides ('bright' and 'dark') of the star formation of the same population of galaxies or two different populations of star forming galaxies. No significant difference between the L$_{tot}$ ($=L_{60}+L_{FUV}$) luminosity functions of the UV and FIR samples is found. Also, after the correction for the `Malmquist bias' (bias for flux limited samples), the FIR-to-UV ratio v.s. L$_{tot}$ relations of the two samples are consistent with each other. In the range of $9 \la \log(L_{tot}/L_\sun) \la 12$, both can be approximated by a simple linear relation of $\log (L_{60}/L_{FUV})=\log(L_{tot}/L_\sun)-9.66$. These are consistent with the hypothesis that the two samples represent the same population of star forming galaxies, and their well documented differences in L$_{tot}$ and in FIR-to-UV ratio are due only to the selection effect. A comparison between the UV luminosity functions shows marginal evidence for a population of faint UV galaxies missing in the FIR selected sample. The contribution from these 'FIR-quiet' galaxies to the overall UV population is insignificant, given that the K-band luminosity functions (i.e. the stellar mass functions) of the two samples do not show any significant difference.

We fit a parametric model comprising a mixture of multi-dimensional Gaussian functions to the 3.6 to 8um colour and optical photo-z distribution of galaxy populations in the ELAIS-N1 and Lockman Fields of SWIRE. For 16,698 sources in ELAIS-N1 we find our data are best modelled (in the sense of the Bayesian Information Criterion) by the sum of four Gaussian distributions or modes (C_a, C_b, C_c and C_d). We compare the fit of our empirical model with predictions from existing semi-analytic and phenomological models. We infer that our empirical model provides a better description of the mid-infrared colour distribution of the SWIRE survey than these existing models. This colour distribution test is thus a powerful model discriminator and complementary to comparisons of number counts. We use our model to provide a galaxy classification scheme and explore the nature of the galaxies in the different modes of the model. C_a consists of dusty star-forming systems such as ULIRG's. Low redshift late-type spirals are found in C_b, where PAH emission dominates at 8um. C_c consists of dusty starburst systems at intermediate redshifts. Low redshift early-type spirals and ellipticals dominate C_d. We thus find a greater variety of galaxy types than one can with optical photometry alone. Finally we develop a new technique to identify unusual objects, and find a selection of outliers with very red IRAC colours. These objects are not detected in the optical, but have very strong detections in the mid-infrared. These sources are modelled as dust-enshrouded, strongly obscured AGN, where the high mid-infrared emission may either be attributed to dust heated by the AGN or substantial star-formation. These sources have z_ph ~ 2-4, making them incredibly infrared luminous, with a L_IR ~ 10^(12.6-14.1) L_sun., 44 pages, 10 figures, 6 tables. Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

We characterize the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic Legacy Survey (SWIRE) galaxy populations in the SWIRE validation field within the Lockman Hole, based on the 3.6-24 μm Spitzer data and deep U, g', r', i' optical imaging within an area ~1/3 deg2 for ~16,000 Spitzer SWIRE sources. The entire SWIRE survey will discover over 2.3 million galaxies at 3.6 μm and almost 350,000 at 24 μm ~70,000 of these will be five-band 3.6-24 μm detections. The colors cover a broad range, generally well represented by redshifted spectral energy distributions of known galaxy populations; however, significant samples of unusually blue objects in the [3.6]-[4.5] color are found, as well as many objects very red in the 3.6-24 μm mid-IR. Nine of these are investigated and are interpreted as star-forming systems, starbursts, and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from z=0.37 to 2.8, with luminosities from LIR=1010.3 to 1013.7 Lsolar.

The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), a NASA Small Explorer Mission planned for launch in Fall 2002, will perform the first Space Ultraviolet sky survey. Five imaging surveys in each of two bands (1350-1750Å and 1750-2800Å) will range from an all-sky survey (limit m_(AB)~20-21) to an ultra-deep survey of 4 square degrees (limit m_(AB)~26). Three spectroscopic grism surveys (R=100-300) will be performed with various depths (m_(AB)~20-25) and sky coverage (100 to 2 square degrees) over the 1350-2800Å band. The instrument includes a 50 cm modified Ritchey-Chrétien telescope, a dichroic beam splitter and astigmatism corrector, two large sealed tube microchannel plate detectors to simultaneously cover the two bands and the 1.2 degree field of view. A rotating wheel provides either imaging or grism spectroscopy with transmitting optics. We will use the measured UV properties of local galaxies, along with corollary observations, to calibrate the UV-global star formation rate relationship in galaxies. We will apply this calibration to distant galaxies discovered in the deep imaging and spectroscopic surveys to map the history of star formation in the universe over the red shift range zero to two. The GALEX mission will include an Associate Investigator program for additional observations and supporting data analysis. This will support a wide variety of investigations made possible by the first UV sky survey.

The [N ii] line is a major coolant in ionized interstellar medium, and is expected to be a good star formation rate indicator. Here we present a statistical study of [N ii] line emission for a large sample of local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) using Herschel SPIRE FTS data (Lu et al. 2012; Zhao et al. 2012, in preparation). For our sample of galaxies, the [N ii] to the total infrared luminosity ratio (L[Nii]/LIR) varies from ∼ 10−5 to ∼ 10−4. We investigate the correlation between L[Nii] and LIR, as well as the dependence of L[Nii]/LIR on LIR, infrared colors (f60/f100) and the OIII 88 μm to [N ii] luminosity ratio. We find that L[Nii] strongly, and almost linearly correlates with LIR for star-forming galaxies, namely log LIR = (4.23 ± 0.33) + (0.99 ± 0.05) log L[NII] (see Fig. 1). The scatter in this relation is mainly due to the variation of hardness, and/or high ionization parameter, of the background UV field.

We present results of a statistical study of the cosmic evolution of the mass-dependent major-merger rate since z = 1. A stellar mass limited sample of close major-merger pairs (the CPAIR sample) was selected from the archive of the COSMOS survey. Pair fractions at different redshifts derived using the CPAIR sample and a local K-band-selected pair sample show no significant variations with stellar mass. The pair fraction exhibits moderately strong cosmic evolution, with the best-fitting function of f_(pair) = 10^(–1.88(± 0.03))(1 + z)^(2.2(± 0.2)). The best-fitting function for the merger rate is R_(mg) (Gyr^(–1)) = 0.053 × (M_(star)/10^(10.7) M_☉ )^(0.3)(1 + z)^(2.2)/(1 + z/8). This rate implies that galaxies of M_(star) ~ 10^(10)-10^(11.5) M_☉ have undergone ~0.5-1.5 major mergers since z = 1. Our results show that, for massive galaxies (M_(star) ≥ 10^(10.5) M_☉) at z ≤ 1, major mergers involving star-forming galaxies (i.e., wet and mixed mergers) can account for the formation of both ellipticals and red quiescent galaxies (RQGs). On the other hand, major mergers cannot be responsible for the formation of most low mass ellipticals and RQGs of M_(star) ≾ 10^(10.3) M_☉. Our quantitative estimates indicate that major mergers have significant impact on the stellar mass assembly of the most massive galaxies (M_(star) ≥ 10^(11.3) M_☉), but for less massive galaxies the stellar mass assembly is dominated by the star formation. Comparison with the mass-dependent (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRG) rates suggests that the frequency of major-merger events is comparable to or higher than that of (U)LIRGs.
