Search

With its capacity to observe $\sim 10^{5-6}$ faint active galactic nuclei (AGN) out to redshift $z\approx 6$, Roman is poised to reveal a population of $10^{4-6}\, {\rm M_\odot}$ black holes during an epoch of vigorous galaxy assembly. By measuring the light curves of a subset of these AGN and looking for periodicity, Roman can identify several hundred massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) with 5-12 day orbital periods, which emit copious gravitational radiation and will inevitably merge on timescales of $10^{3-5}$ years. During the last few months of their merger, such binaries are observable with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), a joint ESA/NASA gravitational wave mission set to launch in the mid-2030s. Gravitational wave (GW) sources at cosmological distances can be used to probe the expansion rate of the Universe. GWs directly provide a distance estimation of the source but no direct information on its redshift. The optimal scenario to obtain a redshift is through the direct identification of an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart and its host galaxy. With almost 100 GW sources detected without EM counterparts (dark sirens), it is becoming crucial to have statistical techniques able to perform cosmological studies in the absence of EM emission. Currently, only two techniques for dark sirens are used on GW observations: the spectral siren method, which is based on the source-frame mass distribution to estimate conjointly cosmology and the source's merger rate, and the galaxy survey method, which uses galaxy surveys to assign a probabilistic redshift to the source while fitting cosmology. It has been recognized, however, that these two methods are two sides of the same coin. In this paper, we present a novel approach to unify these two methods. We apply this approach to several observed GW events using the \textsc{glade+} galaxy catalog discussing limiting cases. We provide estimates of the Hubble constant, modified gravity propagation effects, and population properties for binary black holes. We also estimate the binary black hole merger rate per galaxy to be $10^{-6}-10^{-5} {\rm yr^{-1}}$ depending on the galaxy catalog hypotheses., 16 pages, 9 figures

The presence of charged dust grains is known to have a profound impact on the physical evolution of the multiphase interstellar medium (ISM). Despite its importance, this process is still poorly explored in numerical simulations due to its complex physics and the tight dependence on the environment. Here we introduce a novel implementation of grain charging in the cosmological radiative transfer code CRASH. We first benchmark the code predictions on a series of idealized dusty HII regions created by a single star, in order to assess the impact of grain properties on the resulting spatial distribution of charges. Second, we perform a realistic radiative transfer simulation of a star forming region extracted from a dusty galaxy evolving in the Epoch of Reionization. We find that $\sim 13$ % of the total dust mass gets negatively charged, mainly silicate and graphite grains of radius micron. A complex spatial distribution of grain charges is also found, primarily depending on the exposure to stellar radiation and strongly varying along different lines of sight, as a result of radiative transfer effects. We finally assess the impact of grain properties (both chemical composition and size) on the resulting charge distribution. We present a machine learning model to classify active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and galaxies (AGN-galaxy classifier) and a model to identify type 1 (optically unabsorbed) and type 2 (optically absorbed) AGN (type 1/2 classifier). We test tree-based algorithms, using training samples built from the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission–Newton (XMM–Newton) catalogue and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), with labels derived from the SDSS survey. The performance was tested making use of simulations and of cross-validation techniques. With a set of features including spectroscopic redshifts and X-ray parameters connected to source properties (e.g. fluxes and extension), as well as features related to X-ray instrumental conditions, the precision and recall for AGN identification are 94 and 93 per cent, while the type 1/2 classifier has a precision of 74 per cent and a recall of 80 per cent for type 2 AGNs. The performance obtained with photometric redshifts is very similar to that achieved with spectroscopic redshifts in both test cases, while there is a decrease in performance when excluding redshifts. Our machine learning model trained on X-ray features can accurately identify AGN in extragalactic surveys. We have investigated the structure of the Hercules supercluster (SCL160) based on data originally extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey SDSS-DR7. We have traced the mass distribution in the field through the numerical density-weighted by the $r^\prime$-luminosity of the galaxies and classified them based on their spatial position and redshift. This has allowed us not only to address the kinematics of the supercluster as a whole, but also the internal kinematic of each cluster, which was no further explored before. We have confirmed that the Hercules supercluster is composed of the galaxy clusters A2147, A2151, and A2152. A2151 consists of five subclusters, A2147 on two and A2152 on at least two. They form the heart of the Hercules supercluster. We also have found two other gravitationally bond clusters, increasing, therefore, the known members of the supercluster. We have estimated a total mass of $2.1\pm0.2 \times 10^{15}$ M$_\odot$ for the Hercules supercluster. To determine the dynamical masses in this work, we have resorted to the $M_{200}-\sigma$ scaling relation and the caustic technique. Comparing both methods with simulated data of bimodal merging clusters, we found the caustic, as well as the $\sigma$-based masses, are biased through the merger age, showing a boost just after the pericentric passage. Obtaining accurately calibrated redshift distributions of photometric samples is one of the great challenges in photometric surveys like LSST, Euclid, HSC, KiDS, and DES. We present an inference methodology that combines the redshift information from the galaxy photometry with constraints from two-point functions, utilizing cross-correlations with spatially overlapping spectroscopic samples, and illustrate the approach on CosmoDC2 simulations. Our likelihood framework is designed to integrate directly into a typical large-scale structure and weak lensing analysis based on two-point functions. We discuss efficient and accurate inference techniques that allow us to scale the method to the large samples of galaxies to be expected in LSST. We consider statistical challenges like the parametrization of redshift systematics, discuss and evaluate techniques to regularize the sample redshift distributions, and investigate techniques that can help to detect and calibrate sources of systematic error using posterior predictive checks. We evaluate and forecast photometric redshift performance using data from the CosmoDC2 simulations, within which we mimic a DESI-like spectroscopic calibration sample for cross-correlations. Using a combination of spatial cross-correlations and photometry, we show that we can provide calibration of the mean of the sample redshift distribution to an accuracy of at least 0.002(1+z), consistent with the LSST-Y1 science requirements for weak lensing and large-scale structure probes., Comment: Updated to match the version accepted by the MNRAS, 23 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

We characterize the selection cuts and clustering properties of a magnitude-limited sample of bright galaxies that is part of the Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) using the ninth data release of the Legacy Imaging Surveys (DR9). We describe changes in the DR9 selection compared to the DR8 one and we also compare the DR9 selection in three distinct regions: BASS/MzLS in the north Galactic Cap (NGC), DECaLS in the NGC, and DECaLS in the south Galactic Cap (SGC). We investigate the systematics associated with the selection and assess its completeness by matching the BGS targets with the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. We measure the angular clustering for the overall bright sample (rmag ≤ 19.5) and as function of apparent magnitude and colour. This enables to determine the clustering strength r0 and slope γ by fitting a power-law model that can be used to generate accurate mock catalogues for this tracer. We use a counts-in-cells technique to explore higher order statistics and cross-correlations with external spectroscopic data sets in order to check the evolution of the clustering with redshift and the redshift distribution of the BGS targets using clustering redshifts. The locations of Ly-$\alpha$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) at the end of the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) are expected to correlate with regions of ionised hydrogen, traced by the redshifted 21~cm hyperfine line. Mapping the neutral hydrogen around regions with detected and localised LAEs offers an avenue to constrain the brightness temperature of the Universe within the EoR by providing an expectation for the spatial distribution of the gas, thereby providing prior information unavailable to power spectrum measurements. We use a test set of 12 hours of observations from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in extended array configuration, to constrain the neutral hydrogen signature of 58 LAEs, detected with the Subaru Hypersuprime Cam in the \textit{Silverrush} survey, centred on $z$=6.58. We assume that detectable emitters reside in the centre of ionised HII bubbles during the end of reionization, and predict the redshifted neutral hydrogen signal corresponding to the remaining neutral regions using a set of different ionised bubble radii. A prewhitening matched filter detector is introduced to assess detectability. We demonstrate the ability to detect, or place limits upon, the amplitude of brightness temperature fluctuations, and the characteristic HII bubble size. Roman Space Telescope will survey about 17 million emission-line galaxies over a range of redshifts. Its main targets are Hα emission-line galaxies at low redshifts (z < 2) and [O iii] emission-line galaxies at high redshifts (z > 2). The Roman Space Telescope will estimate the redshift of these galaxies with single-line identification. This suggests that other emission-line galaxies may be misidentified as the main targets. In particular, it is hard to distinguish between the H β and [O iii] lines as the two lines are close in wavelength and hence the photometric information may not be sufficient to separate them reliably. Misidentifying H β emitter as [O iii] emitter will cause a shift in the inferred radial position of the galaxy by approximately 90 Mpc h−1. This length-scale is similar to the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale and could shift and broaden the BAO peak, possibly introduce errors in determining the BAO peak position. We qualitatively describe the effect of this new systematic and further quantify it with a light-cone simulation with emission-line galaxies. Our results show a systematic shift in the recovered isotropic BAO positions that depends on the percentage of interlopers (percentage of ${\rm H}\,\beta$) in the sample. The systematic shift can be as large as $0.1{-}0.3\,\mathrm{ per}\,\mathrm{ cent} \, {\rm x}\, {{\%}}{\rm H}\,\beta$ for analysis performed at redshifts z = 1.3−1.9.

When the light from a distant object passes very near to a foreground galaxy or cluster, gravitational lensing can cause it to appear as multiple images on the sky. If the source is variable, it can be used to constrain the cosmic expansion rate and dark energy models. Achieving these cosmological goals requires many lensed transients with precise time delay measurements. Lensed supernovae (SN) are attractive for this purpose because they have relatively simple photometric behavior, with well-understood light curve shapes and colours $-$ in contrast to the stochastic variation of quasars. Here we report the discovery of a multiply-imaged supernova, AT2016jka ("SN Requiem"). It appeared in an evolved galaxy at $z=1.95$, gravitationally lensed by a foreground galaxy cluster. It is likely a Type Ia supernova $-$ the explosion of a low-mass stellar remnant, whose light curve can be used to measure cosmic distances. Gravitational waves (GWs) may be magnified or de-magnified due to lensing. This phenomenon will bias the distance estimation based on the matched filtering technique. Via the multi-sphere ray-tracing technique, we study the GW magnification effect and selection effect with particular attention to the stellar-mass binary black holes (BBHs). We find that, for the observed luminosity distance $\lesssim 3~\mathrm{Gpc}$, which is the aLIGO/Virgo observational horizon limit, the average magnification keeps as unity, namely unbiased estimation, with the relative distance uncertainty $\sigma(\hat{d})/\hat{d}\simeq0.5\%\sim1\%$. Beyond this observational horizon, the estimation bias can not be ignored, and with the scatters $\sigma(\hat{d})/\hat{d} = 1\%\sim 15\%$. Furthermore, we forecast these numbers for Einstein Telescope. We find that the average magnification keeps closely as unity for the observed luminosity distance $\lesssim 90~\mathrm{Gpc}$. The luminosity distance estimation error due to lensing for Einstein Telescope is about $\sigma(\hat{d})/\hat{d} \simeq 10\%$ for the luminosity distance $\gtrsim 25~\mathrm{Gpc}$. Unlike the aLIGO/Virgo case, this sizable error is not due to the selection effect. It purely comes from the unavoidably accumulated lensing magnification. Moreover, we investigated the effects of the orientation angle and the BH mass distribution models. We use galaxies from the IllustrisTNG, MassiveBlack-II and Illustris hydrodynamic simulations to investigate the behaviour of large scale galaxy intrinsic alignments. Our analysis spans four redshift slices over the approximate range of contemporary lensing surveys $z=0-1$. We construct comparable weighted samples from the three simulations, which we then analyse using an alignment model that includes both linear and quadratic alignment contributions. Our data vector includes galaxy-galaxy, galaxy-shape and shape-shape projected correlations, with the joint covariance matrix estimated analytically. In all of the simulations, we report non-zero IAs at the level of several $\sigma$. For a fixed lower mass threshold, we find a relatively strong redshift dependence in all three simulations, with the linear IA amplitude increasing by a factor of $\sim 2$ between redshifts $z=0$ and $z=1$. We report no significant evidence for non-zero values of the tidal torquing amplitude, $A_2$, in TNG, above statistical uncertainties, although MassiveBlack-II favours a moderately negative $A_2\sim-2$. Examining the properties of the TATT model as a function of colour, luminosity and galaxy type (satellite or central), our findings are consistent with the most recent measurements on real data. We also outline a novel method for constraining the TATT model parameters directly from the pixelised tidal field, alongside a proof of concept exercise using TNG. Upcoming galaxy surveys and 21-cm experiments targeting high redshifts $z\gtrsim 6$ are highly complementary probes of galaxy formation and reionization. However, in order to expedite the large volume simulations relevant for 21-cm observations, many models of galaxies within reionization codes are entirely subgrid and/or rely on halo abundances only. In this work, we explore the extent to which resolving and modeling individual galaxy formation histories affects predictions both for the galaxy populations detectable by upcoming surveys and the signatures of reionization accessible to upcoming 21-cm experiments. We find that a common approach, in which galaxy luminosity is assumed to be a function of halo mass only, is biased with respect to models in which galaxy properties are evolved through time via semi-analytic modeling and thus reflective of the diversity of assembly histories that naturally arise in $N$-body simulations. The diversity of galaxy formation histories also results in scenarios in which the brightest galaxies do \textit{not} always reside in the centers of large ionized regions, as there are often relatively low-mass halos undergoing dramatic, but short-term, growth. This has clear implications for attempts to detect or validate the 21-cm background via cross correlation. Finally, we show that a hybrid approach -- in which only halos hosting galaxies bright enough to be detected in surveys are modeled in detail, with the rest modeled as an unresolved field of halos with abundance related to large-scale overdensity -- is a viable way to generate large-volume `simulations` well-suited to wide-area surveys and current-generation 21-cm experiments targeting relatively large $k \lesssim 1 \ h \ \text{Mpc}^{-1}$ scales., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The high redshift Lyman-alpha forest, in particular the Gunn-Peterson trough, is the most unambiguous signature of the neutral to ionized transition of the intergalactic medium (IGM) taking place during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Recent studies, e.g. Kulkarni et al. (2019a) and Keating et al. (2019), showed that reproducing the observed Lyman-alpha opacities after overlap required a non-monotonous evolution of cosmic emissivity: rising, peaking at z=6, and then decreasing onwards to z=4. Such an evolution is puzzling considering galaxy build-up and the cosmic star formation rate are still continously on the rise at these epochs. Here, we use new RAMSES-CUDATON simulations to show that such a peaked evolution may occur naturally in a fully coupled radiation-hydrodynamical framework. In our fiducial run, cosmic emissivity at z>6 is dominated by a low mass (M$_{\rm DM}, 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In the post-reionization era, the baryons assembled into the protogalaxies and eventually the present population of the galaxies evolved through merger and evolution. In this work, we discuss a possible probe of the statistical distribution and evolution of the H I density in the post reionization era. We introduce an estimator of the H I power spectrum from the post reionization universe by observing it through the strong gravitational lenses by the nearby galaxy cluster. We also analytically calculate the uncertainties associated with the estimates of the post-EoR power spectrum for the discussed estimator. We access the efficacy of this estimator in the context of 19 galaxy clusters for which the lensing potential has been estimated earlier by various authors. We find that by combining the lensed power spectrum through eight of these cluster lenses, it is possible to estimate the post-reionization H I power spectrum at five-sigma significance for angular multipoles < 4000 for a uGMRT observation of 16 MHz bandwidth from redshifts of 1.25, 1.5 with a total of 400 hours of observation. With the same setup, for a redshift of 3.0, we need 200 hours of total observation time. The estimator also suppresses the diffused galactic foreground, though, the latter is still a dominant contributor to the overall signal and hence need to be estimated and mitigated. The diffuse extragalactic background light (EBL) is formed by ultraviolet (UV), optical, and infrared (IR) photons mainly produced by star formation processes over the history of the Universe, and contains essential information about galaxy evolution and cosmology. Here, we present a new determination of the evolving EBL spectral energy distribution using a novel approach purely based on galaxy data aiming to reduce current uncertainties on the higher redshifts and IR intensities. Our calculations use multiwavelength observations from the UV to the far-IR of a sample of approximately 150,000 galaxies detected up to $z\sim 6$ in the five fields of the Cosmic Assembly Near-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) from the Hubble Space Telescope. This is one of the most comprehensive and deepest multi-wavelength galaxy datasets ever obtained. These unprecedented resources allow us to derive the overall EBL evolution up to $z\sim 6$ and its uncertainties. Our results agree with cosmic observables estimated from galaxy surveys and $\gamma$-ray attenuation such as monochromatic luminosity densities, including those in the far-IR, and star formation rate densities, also at the highest redshits. How does the environment affect active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity? We investigated this question in an extinction-free way, by selecting 1120 infrared galaxies in the $AKARI$ North Ecliptic Pole Wide field at redshift $z$ $\leq$ 1.2. A unique feature of the $AKARI$ satellite is its continuous 9-band infrared (IR) filter coverage, providing us with an unprecedentedly large sample of IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies. By taking advantage of this, for the first time, we explored the AGN activity derived from SED modelling as a function of redshift, luminosity, and environment. We quantified AGN activity in two ways: AGN contribution fraction (ratio of AGN luminosity to the total IR luminosity), and AGN number fraction (ratio of number of AGNs to the total galaxy sample). We found that galaxy environment (normalised local density) does not greatly affect either definitions of AGN activity of our IRG/LIRG samples (log ${\rm L}_{\rm TIR}$ $\leq$ 12). However, we found a different behavior for ULIRGs (log ${\rm L}_{\rm TIR}$ $>$ 12). At our highest redshift bin (0.7 $\lesssim$ z $\lesssim$ 1.2), AGN activity increases with denser environments, but at the intermediate redshift bin (0.3 $\lesssim$ z $\lesssim$ 0.7), the opposite is observed. These results may hint at a different physical mechanism for ULIRGs. The trends are not statistically significant (p $\geq$ 0.060 at the intermediate redshift bin, and p $\geq$ 0.139 at the highest redshift bin). We present strong-lensing analyses of three galaxy clusters, RXJ2129.4+0009 (z=0.235), MS0451.6-0305 (z=0.55), and MACSJ2129.4-0741 (z=0.589), using the powerful combination of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) multi-band observations, and Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) spectroscopy. In RXJ2129, we newly spectroscopically confirm 15 cluster members. Our resulting mass model uses 8 multiple image systems as we include a galaxy-galaxy lensing system North-East of the cluster, and is composed of 71 halos including one dark matter cluster-scale halo and 2 galaxy-scale halos optimized individually. For MS0451, we report the spectroscopic identification of 2 new systems of multiple images in the Northern region, and 112 cluster members. Our mass model uses 16 multiple image systems, and 146 halos, including 2 large-scale halos, and 7 galaxy-scale halos independently optimized. For MACSJ2129, we report the spectroscopic identification of one new multiple image system at z=4.41, and newly measure spectroscopic redshifts for 4 cluster members. Our mass model uses 14 multiple image systems, and is composed of 151 halos, including 2 large-scale halos and 4 galaxy-scale halos independently optimized. Our best models have rms of 0.29'', 0.6'', 0.74'' in the image plane for RXJ2129, MS0451, and MACSJ2129 respectively. This analysis presents a detailed comparison with the existing literature showing excellent agreements, and discuss specific studies of lensed galaxies, e.g. a group of submilimeter galaxies at z=2.9 in MS0451, and a bright z=2.1472 red singly imaged galaxy in MACSJ2129., 25 pages, 10 figures, 13 tables, accepted in MNRAS

Galaxy clusters provide an excellent probe in various research fields in astrophysics and cosmology. However, the number of galaxy clusters detected so far in the $AKARI$ North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) field is limited. In this work, we provide galaxy cluster candidates in the $AKARI$ NEP field with the minimum requisites based only on coordinates and photometric redshift (photo-$z$) of galaxies. We used galaxies detected in 5 optical bands ($g$, $r$, $i$, $z$, and $Y$) by the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), assisted with $u$-band from Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) MegaPrime/MegaCam, and IRAC1 and IRAC2 bands from the $Spitzer$ space telescope for photo-$z$ estimation. We calculated the local density around every galaxy using the 10$^{th}$-nearest neighbourhood. Cluster candidates were determined by applying the friends-of-friends algorithm to over-densities. 88 cluster candidates containing 4390 member galaxies below redshift 1.1 in 5.4 deg$^2$ have been detected. The reliability of our method was examined through false detection tests, redshift uncertainty tests, and applications on the COSMOS data, giving false detection rates of 0.01 to 0.05 and recovery rate of 0.9 at high richness. 3 X-ray clusters previously observed by $ROSAT$ and $Chandra$ were recovered. The cluster galaxies show higher stellar mass and lower star formation rate (SFR) compared to the field galaxies in two-sample Z-tests. We report the discovery of an intrinsically faint, quintuply-imaged, dusty galaxy MACS0600-z6 at a redshift $z=$6.07 viewed through the cluster MACSJ0600.1-2008 ($z$=0.46). A $\simeq4\sigma$ dust detection is seen at 1.2mm as part of the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS), an on-going ALMA Large program, and the redshift is secured via [C II] 158 $\mu$m emission described in a companion paper. In addition, spectroscopic follow-up with GMOS/Gemini-North shows a break in the galaxy's spectrum, consistent with the Lyman break at that redshift. We use a detailed mass model of the cluster and infer a magnification $\mu\gtrsim$30 for the most magnified image of this galaxy, which provides an unprecedented opportunity to probe the physical properties of a sub-luminous galaxy at the end of cosmic reionisation. Based on the spectral energy distribution, we infer lensing-corrected stellar and dust masses of $\rm{2.9^{+11.5}_{-2.3}\times10^9}$ and $\rm{4.8^{+4.5}_{-3.4}\times10^6}$ $\rm{M_{\odot}}$ respectively, a star formation rate of $\rm{9.7^{+22.0}_{-6.6} M_{\odot} yr^{-1}}$, an intrinsic size of $\rm{0.54^{+0.26}_{-0.14}}$ kpc, and a luminosity-weighted age of 200$\pm$100 Myr. Strikingly, the dust production rate in this relatively young galaxy appears to be larger than that observed for equivalent, lower redshift sources. We present a novel scenario for the growth of dust grains in galaxies at high-redshift ($z\sim 6$). In our model, the mechanical feedback from massive star clusters evolving within high-density pre-enriched media allows to pile-up a large amount of matter into massive supershells. If the gas metallicity ($\geq$ Z$_{\odot}$), number density ($\geq 10^6$ cm$^{-3}$) and dust-to-gas mass ratio ($\sim 1/150 \times Z$) within the supershell are sufficiently large, such supershells may become optically thick to the starlight emerging from their host star clusters and even to radiation from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Based on semi-analytic models, we argue that this mechanism, occurring in the case of massive ($\geq 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$) molecular clouds hosting $\geq 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$ star clusters, allows a large mass of gas and dust to acquire a temperature below that of the CMB, whereupon dust grain growth may occur with ease. In galaxies with total stellar mass $M_{*}$, grain growth within supershells may increase the dust mass by $\sim 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$ $(M_{*}/10^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$)., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

The imprints of large-scale structures on the Cosmic Microwave Background can be studied via the CMB lensing and Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) signals. In particular, the stacked ISW signal around supervoids has been claimed in several works to be anomalously high. Local variations in the intergalactic medium (IGM) neutral hydrogen fraction will affect the Ly-$\alpha$ absorption signature of protoclusters identified in tomographic surveys. Using the IllustrisTNG simulations, we investigate how the AGN proximity effect and hot, collisionally ionised gas arising from gravitational infall and black hole feedback changes the Ly-$\alpha$ absorption associated with $M_{z=0}\simeq10^{14}\,M_\odot$ protoclusters at $z\simeq2.4$. We find that protocluster galaxy overdensities exhibit a weak anti-correlation with Ly-$\alpha$ transmission in IGM transmission maps, but local HI ionisation enhancements due to hot $T>10^{6}\rm\,K$ gas or nearby AGN can disrupt this relationship within individual protoclusters. On average, however, we find that strong reductions in the IGM neutral fraction are limited to within $\lesssim 5h^{-1}\,\textrm{cMpc}$ of the dark matter haloes. Local ionisation enhancements will therefore have a minimal impact on the completeness of protocluster identification in tomographic surveys if smoothing Ly-$\alpha$ transmission maps over scales of $\sim4 h^{-1}\,\textrm{cMpc}$, as is typically done in observations. However, if calibrating the relationship between the matter density and Ly-$\alpha$ transmission in tomographic maps using simple analytical models for the Ly-$\alpha$ forest opacity, the presence of hot gas around haloes can still result in systematically lower estimates of $M_{z=0}$ for the most massive protoclusters., Comment: 14 pages (including 1 appendix), 5 figures (plus 2 in the appendix), 1 table. Baryon Acoustic Oscillations are considered to be a very robust standard ruler against various systematics. This premise has been tested against observational systematics, but not to the level required for the next generation of galaxy surveys such as the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) and Euclid. In this paper, we investigate the effect of observational systematics on the BAO measurement of the final sample of quasars from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 16 in order to prepare and hone a similar analysis for upcoming surveys. We employ catalogues with various treatments of imaging systematic effects using linear and neural network-based nonlinear approaches and consider how the BAO measurement changes. We also test how the variations to the BAO fitting model respond to the observational systematics. As expected, we confirm that the BAO measurements obtained from the DR16 quasar sample are robust against imaging systematics well within the statistical error, while reporting slightly modified constraints that shift the line-of-sight BAO signal by less than 1.1% . We use realistic simulations with similar redshift and angular distributions as the DR16 sample to conduct statistical tests for validating the pipeline, quantifying the significance of differences, and estimating the expected bias on the BAO scale in future high-precision data sets. Although we find a marginal impact for the eBOSS QSO data, the work presented here is of vital importance for constraining the nature of dark energy with the BAO feature in the new era of big data cosmology with DESI and Euclid., 14 pages and 16 figures, comments are welcome

The transmission of Lyman-{\alpha} (Ly{\alpha}) in the spectra of distant quasars depends on the density, temperature, and ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM). Therefore, high-redshift (z > 5) Ly{\alpha} forests could be invaluable in studying the late stages of the epoch of reionization (EoR), as well as properties of the sources that drive it. Indeed, high-quality quasar spectra have now firmly established the existence of large-scale opacity fluctuations at z > 5, whose physical origins are still debated. Here we introduce a Bayesian framework capable of constraining the EoR and galaxy properties by forward-modelling the high-z Ly{\alpha} forest. Using priors from galaxy and CMB observations, we demonstrate that the final overlap stages of the EoR (when >95% of the volume was ionized) should occur at z < 5.6, in order to reproduce the large-scale opacity fluctuations seen in forest spectra. However, it is the combination of patchy reionization and the inhomogeneous UV background that produces the longest Gunn-Peterson troughs. Ly{\alpha} forest observations tighten existing constraints on the characteristic ionizing escape fraction of galaxies, with the combined observations suggesting f_{\rm esc} \approx 7^4_3%, and disfavoring a strong evolution with the galaxy's halo (or stellar) mass., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, submitted to MNRAS, comments are welcome

Expanding from previous work we present weak lensing measurements for a total sample of 30 distant ($z_\mathrm{median}=0.93$) massive galaxy clusters from the South Pole Telescope Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SPT-SZ) Survey, measuring galaxy shapes in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys images. We remove cluster members and preferentially select $z\gtrsim 1.4$ background galaxies via $V-I$ colour, employing deep photometry from VLT/FORS2 and Gemini-South/GMOS. We apply revised calibrations for the weak lensing shape measurements and the source redshift distribution to estimate the cluster masses. In combination with earlier Magellan/Megacam results for lower-redshifts clusters we infer refined constraints on the scaling relation between the SZ detection significance and the cluster mass, in particular regarding its redshift evolution. The mass scale inferred from the weak lensing data is lower by a factor $0.76^{+0.10}_{-0.14}$ (at our pivot redshift $z=0.6$) compared to what would be needed to reconcile a flat Planck $\nu\Lambda$CDM cosmology (in which the sum of the neutrino masses is a free parameter) with the observed SPT-SZ cluster counts. The dispersion measure (DM) of fast radio bursts (FRBs) provides a unique way to probe ionised baryons in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Cosmological models with different parameters lead to different DM-redshift ($\mathrm{DM}-z$) relations. Additionally, the over/under-dense regions in the IGM and the circumgalactic medium of intervening galaxies lead to scatter around the mean $\mathrm{DM}-z$ relations. We use the {\sc Illustris TNG300} magneto-hydrodynamic simulation, the {\sc SAGE} semi-analytical model, and the subhalo abundance matching technique (SHAM) to examine the diversity in predictions for galaxy assembly bias (i.e. the difference in the large scale clustering of galaxies at a fixed halo mass due to correlations with the assembly history and other properties of host haloes). We consider samples of galaxies selected according to their stellar mass or star formation rate at various redshifts. We find that all models predict an assembly bias signal of different magnitude, redshift evolution, and dependence with selection criteria and number density. To model these non-trivial dependences, we propose an extension to the standard SHAM technique so it can include arbitrary amounts of assembly bias. We do this by preferentially selecting subhaloes with the same internal property but different {\it individual} large-scale bias. We find that with this model, we can successfully reproduce the galaxy assembly bias signal in either {\sc SAGE} or the {\sc TNG}, for all redshifts and galaxy number densities. We anticipate that this model can be used to constrain the level of assembly bias in observations and aid in the creation of more realistic mock galaxy catalogues., Accepted by mnras

We investigate the performance of group finding algorithms that reconstruct galaxy groups from the positional information of tracer galaxies that are observed in redshift surveys carried out with multiplexed spectrographs. We use mock light-cones produced by the L-Galaxies semi-analytic model of galaxy evolution in which the underlying reality is known. We particularly focus on the performance at high redshift, and how this is affected by choices of the mass of the tracer galaxies (largely equivalent to their co-moving number density) and the (assumed random) sampling rate of these tracers. We first however compare two different approaches to group finding as applied at low redshift, and conclude that these are broadly comparable. For simplicity we adopt just one of these, "Friends-of-Friends" (FoF) as the basis for our study at high redshift. We introduce 12 science metrics that are designed to quantify the performance of the group-finder as relevant for a wide range of science investigations with a group catalogue. These metrics examine the quality of the recovered group catalogue, the median halo masses of different richness structures, the scatter in dark matter halo mass and how successful the group-finder classifies singletons, centrals and satellites. We analyze how these metrics vary with the limiting stellar mass and random sampling rate of the tracer galaxies, allowing quantification of the various trade-offs between different possible survey designs. Finally, we look at the impact of these same design parameters on the relative "costs" in observation time of the survey using as an example the potential MOONRISE survey using the MOONS instrument., ERC STFC

We propose a method of searching for radio sources exhibiting the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect in the multi-frequency emission maps from the Planck mission data using a convolutional neural network. A catalog for recognizing radio sources is compiled using the GLESP pixelation scheme at the frequencies of 100, 143, 217, 353, and 545 GHz. The quality of the proposed approach is evaluated and the quality of the dependence of model data on the S/N ratio is estimated. We show that the presented neural network approach allows the detection of sources with the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. We introduce Z-Sequence, a novel empirical model that utilises photometric measurements of observed galaxies within a specified search radius to estimate the photometric redshift of galaxy clusters. Z-Sequence itself is composed of a machine learning ensemble based on the k-nearest neighbours algorithm. We implement an automated feature selection strategy that iteratively determines appropriate combinations of filters and colours to minimise photometric redshift prediction error. We intend for Z-Sequence to be a standalone technique but it can be combined with cluster finders that do not intrinsically predict redshift, such as our own DEEP-CEE. In this proof-of-concept study we train, fine-tune and test Z-Sequence on publicly available cluster catalogues derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We determine the photometric redshift prediction error of Z-Sequence via the median value of $|\Delta z|/(1+z)$ (across a photometric redshift range of $0.05 \le \textit{z} \le 0.6$) to be $\sim0.01$ when applying a small search radius. The photometric redshift prediction error for test samples increases by 30-50 per cent when the search radius is enlarged, likely due to line-of-sight interloping galaxies. Large-scale sky surveys require companion large volume simulated mock catalogs. To ensure precision cosmology studies are unbiased, the correlations in these mocks between galaxy properties and their large-scale environments must be realistic. Since galaxies are embedded in dark matter halos, an important first step is to include such correlations -- sometimes called assembly bias -- for dark matter halos. However, galaxy properties correlate with smaller scale physics in halos which large simulations struggle to resolve. We describe an algorithm which addresses and largely mitigates this problem. Our algorithm exploits the fact that halo assembly bias is unchanged as long as correlations between halo property $c$ and the intermediate-scale tidal environment $\alpha$ are preserved. Therefore, knowledge of $\alpha$ is sufficient to assign small-scale, otherwise unresolved properties to a halo in a way which preserves its large-scale assembly bias accurately. We demonstrate this explicitly for halo internal properties like formation history (concentration $c_{\rm 200b}$), shape $c/a$, dynamics $c_{v}/a_{v}$, velocity anisotropy $\beta$ and angular momentum (spin $\lambda$). Our algorithm increases a simulation's reach in halo mass and number density by an order of magnitude, with improvements in the bias signal as large as 45% for 30-particle halos, thus significantly reducing the cost of mocks for future weak lensing and redshift space distortion studies., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, minor revisions, accepted in MNRAS

We present a new halo model of neutral hydrogen (HI) calibrated to galaxy formation simulations at redshifts $z\sim0.1$ and $z\sim1.0$ that we employ to investigate the constraining power of interferometric HI intensity mapping on HI astrophysics. We demonstrate that constraints on the small-scale HI power spectrum can break the degeneracy between the HI density $\Omega_{\rm HI}$ and the HI bias $b_{\rm HI}$. For $z\sim0.1$, we forecast that an accurate measurement of $\Omega_{\rm HI}$ up to 6% level precision and the large-scale HI bias $b_{\rm HI}^0$ up to 1% level precision can be achieved using Square Kilometre Array (SKA) pathfinder data from MeerKAT and Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). We also propose a new description of the HI shot noise in the halo model framework in which a scatter of the relation between the HI mass of galaxies and their host halo mass is taken into account. Furthermore, given the number density of HI galaxies above a certain HI mass threshold, future surveys will also be able to constrain the HI mass function using only the HI shot noise. This will lead to constraints at the 10% level using the standard Schechter function. This technique will potentially provide a new way of measuring the HI Mass Function, independent from existing methods. We present an improved framework for estimating the growth rate of large-scale structure, using measurements of the galaxy-velocity cross-correlation in configuration space. We consider standard estimators of the velocity auto-correlation function, $\psi_1$ and $\psi_2$, the two-point galaxy correlation function, $\xi_{gg}$, and introduce a new estimator of the galaxy-velocity cross-correlation function, $\psi_3$. By including pair counts measured from random catalogues of velocities and positions sampled from distributions characteristic of the true data, we find that the variance in the galaxy-velocity cross-correlation function is significantly reduced. Applying a covariance analysis and $\chi^2$ minimisation procedure to these statistics, we determine estimates and errors for the normalised growth rate $f\sigma_8$ and the parameter $\beta = f/b$, where $b$ is the galaxy bias factor. We test this framework on mock hemisphere datasets for redshift $z < 0.1$ with realistic velocity noise constructed from the L-PICOLA simulation code, and find that we are able to recover the fiducial value of $f\sigma_8$ from the joint combination of $\psi_1$ + $\psi_2$ + $\psi_3$ + $\xi_{gg}$, with 15\% accuracy from individual mocks. We also recover the fiducial $f\sigma_8$ to within 1$\sigma$ regardless of the combination of correlation statistics used. When we consider all four statistics together we find that the statistical uncertainty in our measurement of the growth rate is reduced by $59\%$ compared to the same analysis only considering $\psi_2$, by $53\%$ compared to the same analysis only considering $\psi_1$, and by $52\%$ compared to the same analysis jointly considering $\psi_1$ and $\psi_2$., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We perform a comparison, object-by-object and statistically, between the Munich semi-analytical model, L-Galaxies, and the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulations. By running L-Galaxies on the IllustrisTNG dark matter-only merger trees, we identify the same galaxies in the two models. This allows us to compare the stellar mass, star formation rate and gas content of galaxies, as well as the baryonic content of subhaloes and haloes in the two models. We find that both the stellar mass functions and the stellar masses of individual galaxies agree to better than $\sim0.2\,$dex. On the other hand, specific star formation rates and gas contents can differ more substantially. At $z=0$ the transition between low-mass star-forming galaxies and high-mass, quenched galaxies occurs at a stellar mass scale $\sim0.5\,$dex lower in IllustrisTNG than in L-Galaxies. IllustrisTNG also produces substantially more quenched galaxies at higher redshifts. Both models predict a halo baryon fraction close to the cosmic value for clusters, but IllustrisTNG predicts lower baryon fractions in group environments. These differences are due primarily to differences in modelling feedback from stars and supermassive black holes. The gas content and star formation rates of galaxies in and around clusters and groups differ substantially, with IllustrisTNG satellites less star-forming and less gas-rich. We show that environmental processes such as ram-pressure stripping are stronger and operate to larger distances and for a broader host mass range in IllustrisTNG. We suggest that the treatment of galaxy evolution in the semi-analytic model needs to be improved by prescriptions which capture local environmental effects more accurately., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. Using the latest upper limits on the 21-cm power spectrum at $z\approx9.1$ from the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR), we explore regions of parameter space which are inconsistent with the data. We use 21CMMC, a Monte Carlo Markov Chain sampler of 21cmFAST which directly forward models the 3D cosmic 21-cm signal in a fully Bayesian framework. We use the astrophysical parameterisation from 21cmFAST, which includes mass-dependent star formation rates and ionising escape fractions as well as soft-band X-ray luminosities to place limits on the properties of the high-$z$ galaxies. Further, we connect the disfavoured regions of parameter space with existing observational constraints on the Epoch of Reionisation such as ultra-violet (UV) luminosity functions, background UV photoionisation rate, intergalactic medium (IGM) neutral fraction and the electron scattering optical depth. We find that all models exceeding the 21-cm signal limits set by LOFAR at $z\approx9.1$ are excluded at $\gtrsim2\sigma$ by other probes. Finally, we place limits on the IGM spin temperature from LOFAR, disfavouring at 95 per cent confidence spin temperatures below $\sim2.6$ K across an IGM neutral fraction range of $0.15 \lesssim \bar{x}_{H{\scriptscriptstyle I}} \lesssim 0.6$. Note, these limits are only obtained from 141 hrs of data in a single redshift bin. With tighter upper limits, across multiple redshift bins expected in the near future from LOFAR, more viable models will be ruled out. We present the results of a new, deeper, and complete search for high-redshift $6.56.5$ quasars in this field. Additional observations of the other 17 candidates, primarily DESI Legacy Survey photometry and ESO FORS2 spectroscopy, confirm that none is a quasar. This is the first complete sample from the VIKING survey, and we provide the computed selection function. We include a detailed comparison of the BMC method against two other selection methods: colour cuts and minimum-$\chi^2$ SED fitting. We find that: i) BMC produces eight times fewer false positives than colour cuts, while also reaching 0.3 mag. deeper, ii) the minimum-$\chi^2$ SED fitting method is extremely efficient but reaches 0.7 mag. less deep than the BMC method, and selects only one of the four known quasars. We show that BMC candidates, rejected because their photometric SEDs have high $\chi^2$ values, include bright examples of galaxies with very strong [OIII]$\lambda\lambda$4959,5007 emission in the $Y$ band, identified in fainter surveys by Matsuoka et al. Accurate mock catalogues are essential for assessing systematics in the cosmological analysis of large galaxy surveys. Anisotropic two-point clustering measurements from the same simulation show some scatter for different lines of sight (LOS), but are on average equal, due to cosmic variance. This results in scatter in the measured cosmological parameters. We use the OuterRim N-body simulation halo catalogue to investigate this, considering the 3 simulation axes as LOS. The quadrupole of the 2-point statistics is particularly sensitive to changes in the LOS, with sub-percent level differences in the velocity distributions resulting in ~1.5$\sigma$ shifts on large scales. Averaging over multiple LOS can reduce the impact of cosmic variance. We derive an expression for the Gaussian cross-covariance between the power spectrum multipole measurements, for any two LOS, including shot noise, and the corresponding reduction in variance in the average measurement. Quadrupole measurements are anti-correlated, and for three orthogonal LOS, the variance on the average measurement is reduced by more than 1/3. We perform a Fisher analysis to predict the corresponding gain in precision on the cosmological parameter measurements, which we compare against a set of 300 extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) emission line galaxy (ELG) EZmocks. The gain in $f\sigma_8$, which measures the growth of structure, is also better than 1/3. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is expected to observe galaxies at $z>10$ that are presently inaccessible. Here, we use a self-consistent empirical model, the UniverseMachine, to generate mock galaxy catalogues and lightcones over the redshift range $z=0-15$. These data include realistic galaxy properties (stellar masses, star formation rates, and UV luminosities), galaxy-halo relationships, and galaxy-galaxy clustering. Mock observables are also provided for different model parameters spanning observational uncertainties at $z10^7 M_\odot$ and/or $M_{1500}12$ expand dramatically, so efforts to detect $z>12$ galaxies will provide the most valuable constraints on galaxy formation models. The faint-end slopes of the stellar mass/luminosity functions at a given mass/luminosity threshold steepen as redshift increases. This is because observable galaxies are hosted by haloes in the exponentially falling regime of the halo mass function at high redshifts. Hence, these faint-end slopes are robustly predicted to become shallower below current observable limits ($M_\ast < 10^7M_\odot$ or $M_\mathrm{1500}>-17$). For reionization models, extrapolating luminosity functions with a constant faint-end slope from $M_{1500}=-17$ down to $M_{1500}=-12$ gives the most reasonable upper limit for the total UV luminosity and cosmic star formation rate up to $z\sim 12$. We compare to three other empirical models and one semi-analytic model, showing that the range of predicted observables from our approach encompasses predictions from other techniques. Many semi-empirical galaxy formation models have recently emerged to interpret high-$z$ galaxy luminosity functions and make predictions for future galaxy surveys. A common approach assumes a "universal" star formation efficiency, $f_{\ast}$, independent of cosmic time but strongly dependent on the masses of dark matter halos. Though this class of models has been very successful in matching observations over much of cosmic history, simple stellar feedback models do predict redshift evolution in $f_{\ast}$, and are commonly used in semi-analytic models. In this work, we calibrate a set of universal $f_{\ast}$ and feedback-regulated models to the same set of rest-ultraviolet $z \gtrsim 4$ observations, and find that a rapid, $\sim (1+z)^{-3/2}$ decline in both the efficiency of dust production and duty cycle of star formation are needed to reconcile feedback-regulated models with current observations. By construction, these models remain nearly identical to universal $f_{\ast}$ models in rest-ultraviolet luminosity functions and colours. As a result, the only way to distinguish these competing scenarios is either via (i) improved constraints on the clustering of galaxies -- universal and feedback-regulated models differ in predictions for the galaxy bias by $0.1 \lesssim \Delta \langle b \rangle \lesssim 0.3$ over $4 \lesssim z \lesssim 10$ -- or (ii) independent constraints on the dust contents and/or duty cycle of star formation. This suggests that improved constraints on the `dustiness' and `burstiness' of high-$z$ galaxies will not merely add clarity to a given model of star formation in high-$z$ galaxies, but rather fundamentally determine our ability to identify the correct model in the first place., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In order to understand the interaction between the central black hole and the whole galaxy or their co-evolution history along with cosmic time, a complete census of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is crucial. However, AGNs are often missed in optical, UV and soft X-ray observations since they could be obscured by gas and dust. A mid-infrared (mid-IR) survey supported by multiwavelength data is one of the best ways to find obscured AGN activities because it suffers less from extinction. Previous large IR photometric surveys, e.g., $WISE$ and $Spitzer$, have gaps between the mid-IR filters. Therefore, star forming galaxy (SFG)-AGN diagnostics in the mid-IR were limited. The $AKARI$ satellite has a unique continuous 9-band filter coverage in the near to mid-IR wavelengths. In this work, we take advantage of the state-of-the-art spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling software, CIGALE, to find AGNs in mid-IR. We found 126 AGNs in the NEP-Wide field with this method. We also investigate the energy released from the AGN as a fraction of the total IR luminosity of a galaxy. We found that the AGN contribution is larger at higher redshifts for a given IR luminosity. With the upcoming deep IR surveys, e.g., $JWST$, we expect to find more AGNs with our method., 14 pages, 18 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Submillimeter/millimeter observations of dusty star-forming galaxies with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have shown that dust continuum emission generally occurs in compact regions smaller than the stellar distribution. However, it remains to be understood how systematic these findings are. Studies often lack homogeneity in the sample selection, target discontinuous areas with inhomogeneous sensitivities, and suffer from modest $uv$ coverage coming from single array configurations. GOODS-ALMA is a 1.1mm galaxy survey over a continuous area of 72.42arcmin$^2$ at a homogeneous sensitivity. In this version 2.0, we present a new low resolution dataset and its combination with the previous high resolution dataset from the survey, improving the $uv$ coverage and sensitivity reaching an average of $��= 68.4��$Jy beam$^{-1}$. A total of 88 galaxies are detected in a blind search (compared to 35 in the high resolution dataset alone), 50% at $S/N_{peak} \geq 5$ and 50% at $3.5 \leq S/N_{peak} \leq 5$ aided by priors. Among them, 13 out of the 88 are optically dark or faint sources ($H$- or $K$-band dropouts). The sample dust continuum sizes at 1.1mm are generally compact, with a median effective radius of $R_{e} = 0"10 \pm 0"05$ (a physical size of $R_{e} = 0.73 \pm 0.29$kpc at the redshift of each source). Dust continuum sizes evolve with redshift and stellar mass resembling the trends of the stellar sizes measured at optical wavelengths, albeit a lower normalization compared to those of late-type galaxies. We conclude that for sources with flux densities $S_{1.1mm} > 1$mJy, compact dust continuum emission at 1.1mm prevails, and sizes as extended as typical star-forming stellar disks are rare. The $S_{1.1mm} < 1$mJy sources appear slightly more extended at 1.1mm, although they are still generally compact below the sizes of typical star-forming stellar disks., Accepted by A&A. 30 pages, 18 figures

Euclid Consortium: N. Hamaus et al., Euclid is poised to survey galaxies across a cosmological volume of unprecedented size, providing observations of more than a billion objects distributed over a third of the full sky. Approximately 20 million of these galaxies will have their spectroscopy available, allowing us to map the three-dimensional large-scale structure of the Universe in great detail. This paper investigates prospects for the detection of cosmic voids therein and the unique benefit they provide for cosmological studies. In particular, we study the imprints of dynamic (redshift-space) and geometric (Alcock–Paczynski) distortions of average void shapes and their constraining power on the growth of structure and cosmological distance ratios. To this end, we made use of the Flagship mock catalog, a state-of-the-art simulation of the data expected to be observed with Euclid. We arranged the data into four adjacent redshift bins, each of which contains about 11 000 voids and we estimated the stacked void-galaxy cross-correlation function in every bin. Fitting a linear-theory model to the data, we obtained constraints on f/b and DMH, where f is the linear growth rate of density fluctuations, b the galaxy bias, DM the comoving angular diameter distance, and H the Hubble rate. In addition, we marginalized over two nuisance parameters included in our model to account for unknown systematic effects in the analysis. With this approach, Euclid will be able to reach a relative precision of about 4% on measurements of f/b and 0.5% on DMH in each redshift bin. Better modeling or calibration of the nuisance parameters may further increase this precision to 1% and 0.4%, respectively. Our results show that the exploitation of cosmic voids in Euclid will provide competitive constraints on cosmology even as a stand-alone probe. Radial redshift-space distortions due to peculiar velocities and other light-cone effects shape the maps we build of the Universe. We address the open question of their impact onto the monopole moment of the galaxy power spectrum, $P_0(k)$. Specifically, we use an upgraded numerical implementation of the LIGER method to generate $140$ mock galaxy density fields for a full Euclid-like survey and we measure $P_0(k)$ in each of them utilising a standard estimator. We compare the spectra obtained by turning on and off different effects. Our results show that wide-angle effects due to radial peculiar velocities generate excess power above the level expected within the plane-parallel approximation. A significant fraction of high redshift star-forming disc galaxies are known to host giant clumps, whose nature and role in galaxy evolution are yet to be understood. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (RST), with its field of view and high sensitivity will make surveys of cosmological large-scale structure possible at high redshifts. We investigate the possibility of detecting Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) at redshifts $z>7.6$ for use as a standard ruler. We use data from the hydrodynamic simulation \textsc{BlueTides} in conjunction with the gigaparsec-scale Outer Rim simulation and a model for patchy reionization to create mock RST High Latitude Survey grism data for Lyman-alpha emission line selected galaxies at redshifts $z=7.4$ to $z=10$, covering 2280 square degrees. We measure the monopoles of galaxies in the mock catalogues and fit the BAO features. We find that for a line flux of $L = 7\times 10^{-17} \ {\rm erg/s/cm}^{2}$, the $5 \sigma$ detection limit for the current design, the BAO feature is partially detectable (measured in three out of four survey quadrants analysed independently). The resulting root mean square error on the angular diameter distance to $z=7.7$ is 7.9$\%$. If we improve the detection sensitivity by a factor of two (i.e. $L = 3.5\times 10^{-17} \ {\rm erg/s/cm}^{2}$), the distance error reduces to $1.4\%$. We caution that many more factors are yet to be modelled, including dust obscuration, the damping wing due to the intergalactic medium, and low redshift interlopers. If these issues do not strongly affect the results, or different observational techniques (such as use of multiple lines) can mitigate them, RST or similar instruments may be able to constrain the angular diameter distance to the high redshift Universe., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures
