Abstract

This paper discusses the science case for a sensitive spectro-polarimetric survey of the microwave sky. Such a survey would provide a tomographic and dynamic census of the three-dimensional distribution of hot gas, velocity flows, early metals, dust, and mass distribution in the entire Hubble volume, exploit CMB temperature and polarisation anisotropies down to fundamental limits, and track energy injection and absorption into the radiation background across cosmic times by measuring spectral distortions of the CMB blackbody emission. In addition to its exceptional capability for cosmology and fundamental physics, such a survey would provide an unprecedented view of microwave emissions at sub-arcminute to few-arcminute angular resolution in hundreds of frequency channels, a data set that would be of immense legacy value for many branches of astrophysics. We propose that this survey be carried out with a large space mission featuring a broad-band polarised imager and a moderate resolution spectro-imager at the focus of a 3.5 m aperture telescope actively cooled to about 8K, complemented with absolutely-calibrated Fourier Transform Spectrometer modules observing at degree-scale angular resolution in the 10–2000 GHz frequency range. We propose two observing modes: a survey mode to map the entire sky as well as a few selected wide fields, and an observatory mode for deeper observations of regions of specific interest.

Abstract

International audience; The [C ii] 158 µm line is one of the strongest IR emission lines, which has been shown to trace the star formation rate (SFR) of galaxies in the nearby Universe, and up to z ∼ 2. Whether this is also the case at higher redshift and in the early Universe remains debated. The ALPINE survey, which targeted 118 star-forming galaxies at 4.4 < z < 5.9, provides a new opportunity to examine this question with the first statistical dataset. Using the ALPINE data and earlier measurements from the literature, we examine the relation between the [C ii] luminosity and the SFR over the entire redshift range from z ∼ 4 − 8. ALPINE galaxies, which are both detected in [C ii] and in dust continuum, show good agreement with the local L([CII])-SFR relation. Galaxies undetected in the continuum by ALMA are found to be over-luminous in [C ii]when the UV SFR is used. After accounting for dust-obscured star formation, by an amount of SFR(IR)≈SFR(UV) on average, which results from two different stacking methods and SED fitting, the ALPINE galaxies show an L([CII])-SFR relation comparable to the local one. When [C ii] non-detections are taken into account, the slope may be marginally steeper at high-z, although this is still somewhat uncertain. When compared homogeneously, the z > 6 [C ii] measurements (detections and upper limits) do not behave very differently to the z ∼ 4 − 6 data. We find a weak dependence of L([CII])/SFR on the Lyα equivalent width. Finally, we find that the ratio L([CII])/L IR ∼ (1 − 3) × 10 −3 for the ALPINE sources, comparable to that of 'normal' galaxies at lower redshift. Our analysis, which includes the largest sample (∼ 150 galaxies) of [C ii] measurements at z > 4 available so far, suggests no or little evolution of the [C ii]-SFR relation over the last 13 Gyr of cosmic time.

3. Using ALMA to resolve the nature of the early star-forming large-scale structure PLCK G073.4−57.5.

Abstract

Galaxy clusters at high redshift are key targets for understanding matter assembly in the early Universe, yet they are challenging to locate. A sample of more than 2000 high-z candidate structures has been found using Planck's all-sky submillimetre maps, and a sub-set of 234 have been followed up with Herschel-SPIRE, which showed that the emission can be attributed to large overdensities of dusty star-forming galaxies. As a next step, we need to resolve and characterise the individual galaxies giving rise to the emission seen by Planck and Herschel, and to find out whether they constitute the progenitors of present-day, massive galaxy clusters. Thus, we targeted the eight brightest Herschel-SPIRE sources in the centre of the Planck peak PLCK G073.4−57.5 using ALMA at 1.3 mm, and complemented these observations with multi-wavelength data from Spitzer-IRAC, CFHT-WIRCam in the J and Ks bands, and JCMT's SCUBA-2 instrument. We detected a total of 18 millimetre galaxies brighter than 0.3 mJy within the 2.4 arcmin2 ALMA pointings, corresponding to an ALMA source density 8–30 times higher than average background estimates and larger than seen in typical "proto-cluster" fields. We were able to match all but one of the ALMA sources to a near infrared (NIR) counterpart. The four most significant SCUBA-2 sources are not included in the ALMA pointings, but we find an 8σ stacking detection of the ALMA sources in the SCUBA-2 map at 850 μm. We derive photometric redshifts, infrared (IR) luminosities, star-formation rates (SFRs), stellar masses (ℳ), dust temperatures, and dust masses for all of the ALMA galaxies. Photometric redshifts identify two groups each of five sources, concentrated around z  ≃  1.5 and 2.4. The two groups show two "red sequences", that is similar near-IR [3.6]  −  [4.5] colours and different J  −  Ks colours. The majority of the ALMA-detected galaxies are on the SFR versus ℳ main sequence (MS), and half of the sample is more massive than the characteristic ℳ* at the corresponding redshift. We find that the z  ≃  1.5 group has total SFR = 840−100+120M⊙ yr−1 SFR = 840 − 100 + 120 M ⊙ yr − 1 $ \mathrm{SFR}=840^{+120}_{-100}\,{M}_{\odot}\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1} $ and ℳ = 5.8−2.4+1.7 × 1011M⊙ M = 5. 8 − 2.4 + 1.7 × 10 11 M ⊙ $ \mathcal{M}=5.8^{+1.7}_{-2.4}\,{\times}\,10^{11}\,{M}_{\odot} $ , and that the z  ≃  2.4 group has SFR = 1020−170+310M⊙ yr−1 SFR = 1020 − 170 + 310 M ⊙ yr − 1 $ \mathrm{SFR}=1020^{+310}_{-170}\,{M}_{\odot}\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1} $ and ℳ = 4.2−2.1+1.5 × 1011M⊙ M = 4. 2 − 2.1 + 1.5 × 10 11 M ⊙ $ \mathcal{M}=4.2^{+1.5}_{-2.1}\,{\times}\,10^{11}\,{M}_{\odot} $ , but the latter group is more scattered in stellar mass and around the MS. Serendipitous CO line detections in two of the galaxies appear to match their photometric redshifts at z  =  1.54. We performed an analysis of star-formation efficiencies (SFEs) and CO- and mm-continuum-derived gas fractions of our ALMA sources, combined with a sample of 1 <  z <  3 cluster and proto-cluster members, and observed trends in both quantities with respect to stellar masses and in comparison to field galaxies. The authors acknowledge the use of software provided by the US National Virtual Observatory., We describe the all-sky Planck catalogue of clusters and cluster candidates derived from Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect detections using the first 15.5 months of Planck satellite observations. The catalogue contains 1227 entries, making it over six times the size of the Planck Early SZ (ESZ) sample and the largest SZ-selected catalogue to date. It contains 861 confirmed clusters, of which 178 have been confirmed as clusters, mostly through follow-up observations, and a further 683 are previously-known clusters. The remaining 366 have the status of cluster candidates, and we divide them into three classes according to the quality of evidence that they are likely to be true clusters. The Planck SZ catalogue is the deepest all-sky cluster catalogue, with redshifts up to about one, and spans the broadest cluster mass range from (0.1 to 1.6) × 1015 M⊙. Confirmation of cluster candidates through comparison with existing surveys or cluster catalogues is extensively described, as is the statistical characterization of the catalogue in terms of completeness and statistical reliability. The outputs of the validation process are provided as additional information. This gives, in particular, an ensemble of 813 cluster redshifts, and for all these Planck clusters we also include a mass estimated from a newly-proposed SZ-mass proxy. Abstract

We examine the relation between the galaxy cluster mass M and Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect signal DA 2 Y500 for a sample of 19 objects for which weak lensing (WL) mass measurements obtained from Subaru Telescope data are available in the literature. Hydrostatic X-ray masses are derived from XMM-Newton archive data, and the SZ effect signal is measured from Planck all-sky survey data. We find an MWL-D A 2 Y500 relation that is consistent in slope and normalisation with previous determinations using weak lensing masses; however, there is a normalisation offset with respect to previous measures based on hydrostatic X-ray mass-proxy relations. We verify that our SZ effect measurements are in excellent agreement with previous determinations from Planck data. For the present sample, the hydrostatic X-ray masses at R500 are on average ~ 20 percent larger than the corresponding weak lensing masses, which is contrary to expectations. We show that the mass discrepancy is driven by a difference in mass concentration as measured by the two methods and, for the present sample, that the mass discrepancy and difference in mass concentration are especially large for disturbed systems. The mass discrepancy is also linked to the offset in centres used by the X-ray and weak lensing analyses, which again is most important in disturbed systems. 6. The impact of clustering and angular resolution on far-infrared and millimeter continuum observations.

Abstract

Follow-up observations at high-angular resolution of bright submillimeter galaxies selected from deep extragalactic surveys have shown that the single-dish sources are comprised of a blend of several galaxies. Consequently, number counts derived from low- and high-angular-resolution observations are in tension. This demonstrates the importance of resolution effects at these wavelengths and the need for realistic simulations to explore them. We built a new 2 deg2 simulation of the extragalactic sky from the far-infrared to the submillimeter. It is based on an updated version of the 2SFM (two star-formation modes) galaxy evolution model. Using global galaxy properties generated by this model, we used an abundance-matching technique to populate a dark-matter lightcone and thus simulate the clustering. We produced maps from this simulation and extracted the sources, and we show that the limited angular resolution of single-dish instruments has a strong impact on (sub)millimeter continuum observations. Taking into account these resolution effects, we are reproducing a large set of observables, as number counts and their evolution with redshift and cosmic infrared background power spectra. Our simulation consistently describes the number counts from single-dish telescopes and interferometers. In particular, at 350 and 500 μm, we find that the number counts measured by Herschel between 5 and 50 mJy are biased towards high values by a factor ~2, and that the redshift distributions are biased towards low redshifts. We also show that the clustering has an important impact on the Herschel pixel histogram used to derive number counts from P(D) analysis. We find that the brightest galaxy in the beam of a 500 μm Herschel source contributes on average to only ~60% of the Herschel flux density, but that this number will rise to ~95% for future millimeter surveys on 30 m-class telescopes (e.g., NIKA2 at IRAM). Finally, we show that the large number density of red Herschel sources found in observations but not in models might be an observational artifact caused by the combination of noise, resolution effects, and the steepness of color- and flux density distributions. Abstract

We present the first cross-correlation measurement between Sloan Digital Sky Survey type 1 quasars and the cosmic infrared background (CIB) measured by Herschel. The quasars cover the redshift range 0.15 < z < 3.5 where most of the CIB originates. We detect the submillimetre emission of the quasars, which dominates on small scales, and correlated emission from dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) dominant on larger scales. The mean flux of the Data Release 7 (DR7) quasars (median redshift (z) = 1.4) is 11.1, 7.1 and 3.6 mJy at 250, 350 and 500 μm, respectively, while the mean flux of the DR9 quasars ((z) = 2.5) is 5.7, 5.0 and 1.8 mJy at 250, 350 and 500 μm, respectively. Assuming a modified blackbody spectral energy distribution with a power law in the mid-infrared, we infer that the mean infrared luminosity of the DR7 and DR9 quasars is 1012.4 and 1012.8 L☉, respectively. The correlated emission arises from DSFGs in the same halo as the quasar (the one-halo term) and DSFGs in separate haloes correlated with the quasar-hosting halo (the two-halo term). Using a simple halo model, we find that most quasars are hosted by central galaxies. The host halo mass scale of the DR7 central and satellite quasars is 1012.4 ± 0.9 and 1013.6 ± 0.4 M☉, respectively. The host halo mass scale of the DR9 central and satellite quasars is 1012.3 ± 0.6 and 1012.8 ± 0.4 M☉, respectively. Thus, the halo environment of the central quasars is similar to that of the most actively star-forming galaxies, which supports the view that dusty starburst and quasar activity are evolutionarily linked. Abstract

The discovery of the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) in 1996, together with recent cosmological surveys from the mid-infrared to the millimeter, have revolutionized our view of star formation at high redshifts. It has become clear, in the last decade, that a population of galaxies that radiate most of their power in the far-infrared (the so-called infrared galaxies) contributes an important part of the whole galaxy build-up in the Universe. Since 1996, detailed (and often painful) investigations of the high-redshift infrared galaxies have resulted in the spectacular progress covered in this review. We outline the nature of the sources of the CIB, including their star-formation rate, stellar and total mass, morphology, metallicity, and clustering properties. We discuss their contribution to the stellar content of the Universe and their origin in the framework of the hierarchical growth of structures. Abstract

The diffuse matter in our Galaxy is certainly to be damned by the cosmologist because it pollutes the CMB sky with the various emissions from its components: dust, ionised gas (free–free) and energetic particles (synchrotron). We detail here our knowledge, but also the unknowns, regarding these radiation sources. As we are not in a position to be able to physically escape our Galaxy, the better knowledge of these foreground components is our only hope to build a consistent model which will at least allow us a virtual escape. However, the detailed understanding of the physics of the different emissions and of the large scale distribution of the various emitters is a delight for many of us. Abstract

One of the main challenges facing upcoming Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments aiming at measuring temperature anisotropies with great accuracy will be to assess the contamination of CMB measurements by galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. On the extragalactic side, confusion noise from extragalactic sources hampers the detection of intrinsic CMB anisotropies at small angular scales. Secondary CMB anisotropies must also be carefully accounted for in order to isolate the primordial fluctuations. We present in this article a brief overview of the extragalactic contributions to the CMB. The galactic foregrounds are discussed elsewhere (Giard and Lagache, this issue).
