The origin of the gas in between the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), known as the Magellanic Bridge, has always been the subject of controversy. To shed light into this, we present the results from the MAGellanic Inter-Cloud II (MAGIC II) project aimed at probing the stellar populations in 10 large fields located perpendicular to the main ridge-line of H i in the Inter-Cloud region. We secured these observations of the stellar populations in between the MCs using the WFI (Wide Field Imager) camera on the 2.2 m telescope in La Silla. Using colour-magnitude diagrams, we trace stellar populations across the Inter-Cloud region. In good agreement with MAGIC I, we find significant intermediate-age stars in the Inter-Cloud region as well as young stars of a similar age to the last pericentre passage in between the MCs (~200 Myr ago). We show here that the young, intermediate-age and old stars have distinct spatial distributions. The young stars correlate well with the H i gas suggesting that they were either recently stripped from the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) or formed in situ. The bulk of intermediate-age stars are located mainly in the Bridge region where the H i column density is higher, but they are more spread out than the young stars. They have very similar properties to stars located ~2 kpc from the SMC centre, suggesting that they were tidally stripped from this region. Finally, the old stars extend to some 8 kpc from the SMC supporting the idea that all galaxies have a large extended metal-poor stellar halo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerical simulations suggest that theMBformed from tidally stripped gas and stars in a recent interaction between the MCs. However, the apparent lack of stripped intermediate- or old-age stars associated with the MB is at odds with this picture. In this paper, we present the first results from the MAGellanic Inter-Cloud program (MAGIC) aimed at probing the stellar populations in the inter-Cloud region. We present observations of the stellar populations in two large fields located in between the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC/SMC), secured using the WFI camera on the 2.2 m telescope in La Silla. Using a synthetic color-magnitude diagram technique, we present the first quantitative evidence for the presence of intermediate-age and old stars in the inter-Cloud region. The intermediate-age stars-which make up ~28% of all stars in the region-are not present in fields at a similar distance from the SMC in a direction pointing away from the LMC. This provides potential evidence that these intermediate-age stars could have been tidally stripped from the SMC. We identify an abundant population of extreme emission-line galaxies (EELGs) at redshift z ~ 1.7 in the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey imaging from Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3 (HST/WFC3). Sixty-nine EELG candidates are selected by the large contribution of exceptionally bright emission lines to their near-infrared broadband magnitudes. Supported by spectroscopic confirmation of strong [O III] emission lines--with rest-frame equivalent widths ~1000 Å--in the four candidates that have HST/WFC3 grism observations, we conclude that these objects are galaxies with ~108 M⊙ in stellar mass, undergoing an enormous starburst phase with M*/Ṁ* of only ~15 Myr. These bursts may cause outflows that are strong enough to produce cored dark matter profiles in low-mass galaxies. The individual star formation rates and the comoving number density (3.7 x 10-4 Mpc-3) can produce in ~4 Gyr much of the stellar mass density that is presently contained in 108 - 109 M⊙ dwarf galaxies. Therefore, our observations provide a strong indication that many or even most of the stars in present-day dwarf galaxies formed in strong, short-lived bursts, mostly at z > 1. Context. Low-surface-brightness galaxies (LSBGs), which are defined as galaxies that are fainter than the night sky, play a crucial role in our understanding of galaxy evolution and in cosmological models. Upcoming large-scale surveys, such as Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time and Euclid, are expected to observe billions of astronomical objects. In this context, using semiautomatic methods to identify LSBGs would be a highly challenging and time-consuming process, and automated or machine learning-based methods are needed to overcome this challenge. Aims. We study the use of transformer models in separating LSBGs from artefacts in the data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Data Release 1. Using the transformer models, we then search for new LSBGs from the DES that the previous searches may have missed. Properties of the newly found LSBGs are investigated, along with an analysis of the properties of the total LSBG sample in DES. Methods. We created eight different transformer models and used an ensemble of these eight models to identify LSBGs. This was followed by a single-component Sérsic model fit and a final visual inspection to filter out false positives. Results. Transformer models achieved an accuracy of ~94% in separating the LSBGs from artefacts. In addition, we identified 4083 new LSBGs in DES, adding an additional ~17% to the LSBGs already known in DES. This also increased the number density of LSBGs in DES to 5.5 deg−2. The new LSBG sample consists of mainly blue and compact galaxies. We performed a clustering analysis of the LSBGs in DES using an angular two-point auto-correlation function and found that LSBGs cluster more strongly than their high-surface-brightness counterparts. This effect is driven by the red LSBG. We associated 1310 LSBGs with galaxy clusters and identified 317 ultradiffuse galaxies among them. We found that these cluster LSBGs are getting bluer and larger in size towards the edge of the clusters when compared with those in the centre. Conclusions. Transformer models have the potential to be equivalent to convolutional neural networks as state-of-the-art algorithms in analysing astronomical data. The significant number of LSBGs identified from the same dataset using a different algorithm highlights the substantial impact of our methodology on our capacity to discover LSBGs. The reported number density of LSBGs is only a lower estimate and can be expected to increase with the advent of surveys with better image quality and more advanced methodologies. We considered two sequences of spiral galaxies with different shapes of the radial gas-phase oxygen abundance distributions from the galaxies in the survey Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA): (1) Galaxies in which the gradient is well approximated by a single linear relation across the whole disc, that is, galaxies with an S (slope) gradients, (2) galaxies in which the metallicity in the inner region of the disc is at a nearly constant level and the gradient is negative at larger radii, that is, galaxies with level-slope (LS) gradients. We also selected galaxies with a nearly uniform oxygen abundance across the whole galaxy, that is, galaxies with level (L) gradients (or O/H uniform galaxies) with a high oxygen abundance that can be the final evolutionary stage of the two galaxy sequences described above. The radial nitrogen abundance distributions in galaxies with LS oxygen abundance distributions also show breaks at radii smaller than the O/H distribution breaks. The observed behaviour of the oxygen and nitrogen abundances with radius in these galaxies can be explained by the time delay between the nitrogen and oxygen enrichment together with the variation in the star formation history along the radius. These galaxies clearly show the effect of the inside-out disc evolution model, which predicts that the galactic centre evolves more rapidly than the regions at greater galactocentric distances. We find that the shape of the radial abundance distribution in a galaxy is not related to its macroscopic characteristics (rotation velocity, stellar mass, isophotal radius, and star formation rate) and is independent of its present-day environment. The correlations between the gradient slopes and macroscopic characteristics of galaxies are weak in the sense that the scatter of the points in each diagram is large. The galaxies with different abundance distributions (S, LS, or L) in our sample are located within the main sequence of the star-forming galaxies in the diagram of star formation rate–stellar mass. Context. Globular clusters (GCs) carry information about the formation histories and gravitational fields of their host galaxies. It was found before that the radial profiles of the volume number density of GCs in GC systems (GCSs) follow broken power laws, while the breaks occur approximately at the a0 radii. These are the radii at which the gravitational fields of the galaxies equal the galactic acceleration scale a0 = 1.2 × 10−10 m s−2 known from the radial acceleration relation or the MOND theory of modified dynamics. Aims. Our main goals here are to explore whether the above results hold true for galaxies of a wider mass range and for the red and blue GC subpopulations. Methods. We exploited catalogs of photometric GC candidates in the Fornax galaxy cluster based on ground and space observations and a new catalog of spectroscopic GCs of NGC 1399, the central galaxy of the cluster. For every galaxy, we obtained the parameters of the broken power-law density by fitting the on-sky distribution of the GC candidates, while allowing for a constant density of contaminants. The logarithmic stellar masses of our galaxy sample span 8.0 − 11.4 M⊙. Results. All investigated GCSs with a sufficient number of members show broken power-law density profiles. This holds true for the total GC population and the blue and red subpopulations. The inner and outer slopes and the break radii agree well for the different GC populations. The break radii agree with the a0 radii typically within a factor of two for all GC color subpopulations. The outer slopes correlate better with the a0 radii than with the galactic stellar masses. The break radii of NGC 1399 vary in azimuth, such that they are greater toward and against the direction to NGC 1404, which tidally interacts with NGC 1399. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The triggering and evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and the interaction of the AGN with its host galaxy is an important topic in extragalactic astrophysics. Radio sources with peaked spectra (peaked spectrum sources, PSS) and compact symmetric objects (CSO) are powerful, compact, and presumably young AGNs and therefore particularly suitable to study aspects of the AGN-host connection. Aims. We use a statistical approach to investigate properties of a PSS-CSO sample that are related to host galaxies and could potentially shed light on the link between host galaxies and AGNs. The main goal is to compare the PSS-CSO sample with a matching comparison sample of extended sources (ECS) to see if the two have significant differences. Methods. We analysed composite spectra, diagnostic line diagrams, multi-band spectral energy distributions (MBSEDs), star formation (SF) indicators, morphologies, and cluster environments for a sample of 121 PSSs and CSOs for which spectra are available from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The statistical results were compared with those of the ECS sample, where we generally considered the two subsamples of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) and radio galaxies separately. The analysis is based on a large set of archival data in the spectral range from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared. Results. We find significant differences between the PSS-CSO and the ECS sample. In particular, we find that the ECS sample has a higher proportion of passive galaxies with a lower star formation activity. This applies to both sub-samples (QSOs or radio galaxies) as well as to the entire sample. The star formation rates of the PSS-CSO host galaxies with available data are typically in the range ∼0 to 5 ℳ⊙ yr−1, and the stellar masses are in the range 3 × 1011 to 1012 ℳ⊙. Secondly, in agreement with previous results, we find a remarkably high proportion of PSS-CSO host galaxies with merger signatures. The merger fraction of the PSS-CSO sample is 0.61 ± 0.07, which is significantly higher than that of the comparison sample (0.15 ± 0.06). We suggest that this difference can be explained by assuming that the majority of the PSSs and CSOs cannot evolve to extended radio sources and are therefore not represented in our comparison sample. Galactic winds play a crucial role in the ejection of the interstellar medium (ISM) into intergalactic space. This study presents a model that classifies possible transonic solutions of galactic winds in the gravitational potential of the dark matter halo and stellar component under spherically symmetric and steady assumptions. Our model includes injections of mass and energy resulting from supernova feedback along a flow line. The mass flux in galactic winds is a critical factor in determining the acceleration process of the flow and revealing the impact of galactic winds on galaxy evolution. We apply the transonic galactic wind model to the observed outflow velocities of star-forming galaxies to estimate the mass flux. Dividing the mass flux by the star formation rate (SFR) yields the mass loading rate (and mass loading factor), which indicates the entrainment effect of the ISM by the hot gas flow. Our results demonstrate that the mass loading rate is inversely correlated with galaxy mass and SFR. In less massive galaxies (stellar mass ∼107−8  M ⊙), the mass loading rate exceeds unity, indicating effective ejection of the ISM into intergalactic space. However, in massive galaxies (stellar mass ∼1010−11  M ⊙), the mass loading rate falls below unity, meaning that the mass flux cannot exceed the injected mass by supernovae, thus resulting in ineffective ejection of the ISM. We study a compact nucleus embedded in an early-type dwarf galaxy, MATLAS-167, which is in the process of disruption by the tidal force of the neighbouring giant S0 galaxy, NGC 936, in a group environment. Using the imaging data of the MATLAS survey, we analyse the stellar tidal tail of MATLAS-167 and its central compact nucleus, designated as NGC 936_UCD. We find that NGC 936_UCD has a luminosity of Mg = −11.43 ± 0.01 mag and a size of 66.5 ± 17 pc, sharing the global properties of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) but significantly larger and brighter compared to the typical UCD populations observed in the Virgo cluster. By integrating the total luminosity of both the tidal stream and MATLAS-167, we estimate that the disrupted dwarf progenitor possesses a luminosity of Mg = −15.92 ± 0.06 mag, a typical bright early-type dwarf galaxy luminosity. With the help of the optical spectrum observed by the SDSS survey, we derive the simple stellar population properties of NGC 936_UCD: a light-weighted age of 5.6 ± 0.7 Gyr and metallicity of [Z/H] = −0.83 ± 0.3 dex. Our findings suggest that tidal threshing is a possible formation mechanism of bright UCD populations in close proximity to giant galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. In the standard cosmological model of galaxy evolution, mergers and interactions play a fundamental role in shaping galaxies. Galaxies that are currently isolated are thus interesting because they allow us to distinguish between internal and external processes that affect the galactic structure. However, current observational limits may obscure crucial information in the low-mass or low-brightness regime. Aims. We use optical imaging of a subsample of the AMIGA catalogue of isolated galaxies to explore the impact of different factors on the structure of these galaxies. In particular, we study the type of disc break as a function of the degree of isolation and the presence of interaction indicators such as tidal streams or plumes, which are only detectable in the ultra-low surface brightness regime. Methods. We present ultra-deep optical imaging in the r band of a sample of 25 low-redshift (z < 0.035) isolated galaxies. Through careful data processing and analysis techniques, the nominal surface brightness limits achieved are comparable to those to be obtained on the ten-year LSST coadds (μr,lim ≳ 29.5 mag arcsec−2 [3σ; 10″ × 10″]). We place special emphasis on preserving the low surface brightness features throughout the processing. Results. The extreme depth of our imaging allows us to study the interaction signatures of 20 galaxies since Galactic cirrus is a strong limiting factor in the characterisation of interactions for the remaining 5 of them. We detect previously unreported interaction features in 8 (40% ± 14%) galaxies in our sample. We identify 9 galaxies (36% ± 10%) with an exponential disc (Type I), 14 galaxies (56% ± 10%) with a down-bending (Type II) profile, and only 2 galaxies (8% ± 5%) with up-bending (Type III) profiles. Isolated galaxies have considerably more purely exponential discs and fewer up-bending surface brightness profiles than field or cluster galaxies. We find clear minor merger activity in some of the galaxies with single exponential or down-bending profiles, and both of the galaxies with up-bending profiles show signatures of a past interaction. Conclusions. We show the importance of ultra-deep optical imaging in revealing faint external features in galaxies that indicate a probable history of interaction. We confirm that up-bending profiles are likely produced by major mergers, while down-bending profiles are probably formed by a threshold in star formation. Unperturbed galaxies that slowly evolve with a low star formation rate could induce the high rate of Type I discs in isolated galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. At intermediate redshift, galaxy groups and clusters are thought to impact galaxy properties such as their angular momentum. We investigate whether the environment has an impact on the galaxies' stellar angular momentum and identify underlying driving physical mechanisms. Methods. We derived robust estimates of the stellar angular momentum using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images combined with spatially resolved ionised gas kinematics from the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) for a sample of ∼200 galaxies in groups and in the field at z ∼ 0.7 drawn from the MAGIC survey. Using various environmental tracers, we study the position of the galaxies in the angular momentum–stellar mass (Fall) relation as a function of environment. Results. We measured a 0.12 dex (2σ significant) depletion of stellar angular momentum for low-mass galaxies (M⋆ < 1010M⊙) located in groups with respect to the field. Massive galaxies located in dense environments have less angular momentum than expected from the low-mass Fall relation but, without a comparable field sample, we cannot infer whether this effect is mass or environmentally driven. Furthermore, these massive galaxies are found in the central parts of the structures and have low systemic velocities. The observed depletion of angular momentum at low stellar mass does not appear linked with the strength of the over-density around the galaxies but it is strongly correlated with (i) the systemic velocity of the galaxies normalised by the dispersion of their host group and (ii) their ionised gas velocity dispersion. Conclusions. Galaxies in groups appear depleted in angular momentum, especially at low stellar mass. Our results suggest that this depletion might be induced by physical mechanisms that scale with the systemic velocity of the galaxies (e.g., stripping or merging) and that such a mechanism might be responsible for enhancing the velocity dispersion of the gas as galaxies lose angular momentum. We report the identification of Lyman break galaxy (LBG) candidates around the most luminous hot dust-Obscured galaxy (Hot DOG) known, WISE J224607.56−052634.9 (W2246−0526) at z = 4.601, using deep r-, i-, and z-band imaging from the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph South (GMOS-S). We used the surface density of LBGs to probe the megaparsec-scale environment of W2246−0526 to characterize its richness and evolutionary state. We identified LBG candidates in the vicinity of W2246−0526 using the selection criteria developed in the Subaru Deep Field and in the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field, slightly modified to account for the difference between the filters used, and we find 37 and 55 LBG candidates, respectively. Matching to the z-band depths of those studies, this corresponds to δ = 5.8−1.9+2.4 times the surface density of LBGs expected in the field. Interestingly, the Hot DOG itself, as well as a confirmed neighbor, do not satisfy either LBG selection criteria, suggesting we may be missing a large number of companion galaxies. Our analysis shows that we have mostly likely only found those with a higher than average intergalactic medium (IGM) optical depth or moderately high dust obscuration. The number density of LBG candidates is not concentrated around W2246−0526, suggesting an early evolutionary stage for the proto-cluster, that the Hot DOG may not be the most massive galaxy, or that the Hot DOG may be affecting the IGM transparency in its vicinity. The overdensity around W2246−0526 is comparable to overdensities found around other Hot DOGs and is somewhat higher than what is typically found for radio galaxies and luminous quasars at a similar redshift. We present CEERS JWST/NIRCam imaging of a massive galaxy group at z = 1.85, to explore the early JWST view on massive group formation in the distant Universe. The group contains ≳16 members (including six spectroscopic confirmations) down to log10(M⋆/M⊙) = 8.5, including the brightest group galaxy (BGG) in the process of actively assembling at this redshift. The BGG is comprised of multiple merging components extending ∼3.6″ (30 kpc) across the sky. The BGG contributes 69% of the group's total galactic stellar mass, with one of the merging components containing 76% of the total mass of the BGG and a star formation rate > 1810 M⊙ yr−1. Most importantly, we detected intra-halo light (IHL) in several HST and JWST/NIRCam bands, allowing us to construct a state-of-the-art rest-frame UV-NIR spectral energy distribution of the IHL for the first time at this high redshift. This allows stellar population characterisation of both the IHL and member galaxies, as well as the morphology distribution of group galaxies versus their star formation activity when coupled with Herschel data. We created a stacked image of the IHL, giving us a sensitivity to extended emission of 28.5 mag arcsec−2 at rest-frame 1 μm. We find that the IHL is extremely dust poor (Av ∼ 0), containing an evolved stellar population of log10(t50/yr) = 8.8, corresponding to a formation epoch for 50% of the stellar material 0.63 Gyr before z = 1.85. There is no evidence of ongoing star formation in the IHL. The IHL in this group at z = 1.85 contributes ∼10% of the total stellar mass, comparable with what is observed in local clusters. This suggests that the evolution of the IHL fraction is more self-similar with redshift than predicted by some models, challenging our understanding of IHL formation during the assembly of high-redshift clusters. Context. How galaxies form, assemble, and cease their star formation is a central question within the modern landscape of galaxy evolution studies. These processes are indelibly imprinted on the galaxy stellar mass function (SMF), and its measurement and understanding is key to uncovering a unified theory of galaxy evolution. Aims. We present constraints on the shape and evolution of the galaxy SMF, the quiescent galaxy fraction, and the cosmic stellar mass density across 90% of the history of the Universe from z = 7.5 → 0.2 as a means to study the physical processes that underpin galaxy evolution. Methods. The COSMOS survey is an ideal laboratory for studying representative galaxy samples. Now equipped with deeper and more homogeneous near-infrared coverage exploited by the COSMOS2020 catalog, we leverage the large 1.27 deg2 effective area to improve sample statistics and understand spatial variations (cosmic variance) – particularly for rare, massive galaxies – and push to higher redshifts with greater confidence and mass completeness than previous studies. We divide the total stellar mass function into star-forming and quiescent subsamples through NUVrJ color-color selection. The measurements are then fit with single- and double-component Schechter functions to infer the intrinsic galaxy stellar mass function, the evolution of its key parameters, and the cosmic stellar mass density out to z = 7.5. Finally, we compare our measurements to predictions from state-of-the-art cosmological simulations and theoretical dark matter halo mass functions. Results. We find a smooth, monotonic evolution in the galaxy stellar mass function since z = 7.5, in general agreement with previous studies. The number density of star-forming systems have undergone remarkably consistent growth spanning four decades in stellar mass from z = 7.5 → 2 whereupon high-mass systems become predominantly quiescent ("downsizing"). Meanwhile, the assembly and growth of low-mass quiescent systems only occurred recently, and rapidly. An excess of massive systems at z ≈ 2.5 − 5.5 with strikingly red colors, with some being newly identified, increase the observed number densities to the point where the SMF cannot be reconciled with a Schechter function. Conclusions. Systematics including cosmic variance and/or active galactic nuclei contamination are unlikely to fully explain this excess, and so we speculate that they may be dust-obscured populations similar to those found in far infrared surveys. Furthermore, we find a sustained agreement from z ≈ 3 − 6 between the stellar and dark matter halo mass functions for the most massive systems, suggesting that star formation in massive halos may be more efficient at early times. Recent progress in understanding the assembly history of the Milky Way (MW) is driven by the tremendous amount of high-quality data delivered by Gaia (ESA), revealing a number of substructures potentially linked to several ancient accretion events. In this work we aim to explore the phase-space structure of accreted stars by analysing six M31/MW analogues from the HESTIA suite of cosmological hydrodynamics zoom-in simulations of the Local Group. We find that all HESTIA galaxies experience a few dozen mergers but only between one and four of those have stellar mass ratios > 0.2, relative to the host at the time of the merger. Depending on the halo definition, the most massive merger contributes from 20% to 70% of the total stellar halo mass. Individual merger remnants show diverse density distributions at z = 0, significantly overlapping with each other and with the in situ stars in the Lz − E, (VR, Vϕ) and (R, vϕ) coordinates. Moreover, merger debris often shifts position in the Lz − E space with cosmic time due to the galactic mass growth and the non-axisymmetry of the potential. In agreement with previous works, we show that even individual merger debris exhibit a number of distinct Lz − E features. In the (VR, Vϕ) plane, all HESTIA galaxies reveal radially hot, non-rotating or weakly counter-rotating, Gaia-Sausage-like features, which are the remnants of the most recent significant mergers. We find an age gradient in Lz − E space for individual debris, where the youngest stars, formed in the inner regions of accreting systems, deposit to the innermost regions of the host galaxies. The bulk of these stars formed during the last stages of accretion, making it possible to use the stellar ages of the remnants to date the merger event. In action space (Jr, Jz, Jϕ), merger debris do not appear as isolated substructures, but are instead scattered over a large parameter area and overlap with the in situ stars. We suggest that accreted stars can be best identified using Jr > 0.2−0.3(104 kpc km s−1)0.5. We also introduce a new, purely kinematic space (Jz/Jr-orbital eccentricity), where different merger debris can be disentangled better from each other and from the in situ stars. Accreted stars have a broad distribution of eccentricities, peaking at ϵ ≈ 0.6 − 0.9, and their mean eccentricity tends to be smaller for systems accreted more recently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Theory suggests that mergers play an important role in shaping galactic discs and stellar haloes, which was observationally confirmed in the Milky Way (MW) thanks to Gaia data. In this work, aiming to probe the contribution of mergers to the in situ stellar halo formation, we analyse six M 31 and MW analogues from the HESTIA suite of cosmological hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations of the Local Group. We found that all the HESTIA galaxies experience between one to four mergers with stellar mass ratios between 0.2 and 1 relative to the host at the time of the merger. These significant mergers, with a single exception, happened 7 − 11 Gyr ago. The overall impact of the most massive mergers in HESTIA is clearly seen as a sharp increase in the orbital eccentricity (and a corresponding decrease in the rotational velocity Vϕ) of pre-existing disc stars of the main progenitor, thus nicely reproducing the Splash-, Plume-like feature that was discovered in the MW. We do find a correlation between mergers and close pericentric passages of massive satellites and bursts of the star formation in the in situ component. Massive mergers sharply increase the disc velocity dispersion of the in situ stars; however, the latest significant merger often heats up the disc up to the numbers when the contribution of the previous ones is less prominent in the age-velocity dispersion relation. In HESTIA galaxies, the in situ halo is an important component of the inner stellar halo where its fraction is about 30 − 40%, while in the outer parts it typically does not exceed ≈5% beyond 15 kpc from the galactic centre. The simulations suggest that this component of the stellar haloes continues to grow well after mergers conclude; however, the most significant contribution comes from stars that formed recently before the merger. The orbital analysis of the HESTIA galaxies suggests that wedges in Rmax − Zmax (apocentre – maximum height from the mid-plane) space are mainly populated by the stars born in between significant mergers. Using recent empirical constraints on the dark matter halo–galaxy–supermassive black hole (SMBH) connection from z  = 0–7, we infer how undermassive, typical, and overmassive SMBHs contribute to the quasar luminosity function (QLF) at z  = 6. We find that beyond L bol = 5 × 1046 erg s−1, the z  = 6 QLF is dominated by SMBHs that are at least 0.3 dex above the z  = 6 median M • –M * relation. The QLF is dominated by typical SMBHs (i.e. within ±0.3 dex around the M •– M * relation) at L bol ≲ 1045 erg s−1. At z ∼ 6, the intrinsic M • –M * relation for all SMBHs is slightly steeper than the z  = 0 scaling, with a similar normalization at |$M_* \sim 10^{11} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠. We also predict the M • –M * relation for z  = 6 bright quasars selected by different bolometric luminosity thresholds, finding very good agreement with observations. For quasars with L bol > 3 × 1046 (1048) erg s−1, the scaling relation is shifted upwards by ∼0.35 (1.0) dex for 1011M⊙ galaxies. To accurately measure the intrinsic M • –M * relation, it is essential to include fainter quasars with L bol ≲ 1045 erg s−1. At high redshifts, low-luminosity quasars are thus the best targets for understanding typical formation paths for SMBHs in galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We apply a population-orbit superposition metho1d to 16 galaxies in the Fornax cluster observed with MUSE/VLT in the context of the Fornax3D project. By fitting the luminosity distribution, stellar kinematics, and age and metallicity maps simultaneously, we obtained the internal stellar orbit distribution, as well as the age and metallicity distribution of stars on different orbits for each galaxy. Based on the model, we decompose each galaxy into a dynamically cold disk (orbital circularity -z - 0:8) and a dynamically hot nondisk component (orbital circularity -z < 0:8), and obtain the surface-brightness, age, and metallicity radial profiles of each component. The galaxy infall time into the cluster is strongly correlated with galaxy cold-disk age with older cold disks in ancient infallers. We quantify the infall time tinfall of each galaxy with its cold-disk age using a correlation calibrated with TNG50 cosmological simulations. For galaxies in the Fornax cluster, we found that the luminosity fraction of cold disk in galaxies with tinfall > 8 Gyr are a factor of ~4 lower than in more recent infallers while controlling for total stellar mass. Nine of the 16 galaxies have spatially extended cold disks, and most of them show positive or zero age gradients; stars in the inner disk are ~2-5 Gyr younger than that in the outer disk, in contrast to the expectation of inside-out growth. Our results indicate that the assembly of cold disks in galaxies is strongly affected by their infall into clusters, by either removal of gas in outer regions or even tidally stripping or heating part of the pre-existing disks. Star formation in outer disks can stop quickly after the galaxy falls into the cluster, while star formation in the inner disks can last for a few Gyrs more, building the positive age gradient measured in cold disks. The various Euclid imaging surveys will become a reference for studies of galaxy morphology by delivering imaging over an unprecedented area of 15 000 square degrees with high spatial resolution. In order to understand the capabilities of measuring morphologies from Euclid-detected galaxies and to help implement measurements in the pipeline of the Organisational Unit MER of the Euclid Science Ground Segment, we have conducted the Euclid Morphology Challenge, which we present in two papers. While the companion paper focusses on the analysis of photometry, this paper assesses the accuracy of the parametric galaxy morphology measurements in imaging predicted from within the Euclid Wide Survey. We evaluate the performance of five state-of-the-art surface-brightness-fitting codes, DeepLeGATo, Galapagos-2, Morfometryka, ProFit and SourceXtractor++, on a sample of about 1.5 million simulated galaxies (350 000 above 5σ) resembling reduced observations with the Euclid VIS and NIR instruments. The simulations include analytic Sérsic profiles with one and two components, as well as more realistic galaxies generated with neural networks. We find that, despite some code-specific differences, all methods tend to achieve reliable structural measurements (< 10% scatter on ideal Sérsic simulations) down to an apparent magnitude of about IE = 23 in one component and IE = 21 in two components, which correspond to a signal-to-noise ratio of approximately 1 and 5, respectively. We also show that when tested on non-analytic profiles, the results are typically degraded by a factor of 3, driven by systematics. We conclude that the official Euclid Data Releases will deliver robust structural parameters for at least 400 million galaxies in the Euclid Wide Survey by the end of the mission. We find that a key factor for explaining the different behaviour of the codes at the faint end is the set of adopted priors for the various structural parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the aim of providing the complete demography of galaxies in the local Universe, including their nuclear properties, we present SPRING, a complete census of local galaxies limited to the spring quarter of the northern sky (10h < RA < 16h; 0° < Dec < 65°). The SPRING catalogue is a flux- and volume-limited sample (r < 17.7 mag, cz < 10 000 km s−1) of 30 597 galaxies, including the Virgo, Coma, and A1367 clusters. Images and spectra were individually examined to clear the sample from unwanted entries. To inspect possible secular and environmental dependencies of the various nuclear excitation properties (star-forming versus active nuclei), we performed a multi-dimensional analysis by dividing the total sample according to: (i) their position in the (NUV − i) versus Mstar diagram, (ii) the local galaxy density, (iii) the stellar mass, (iv) the halo mass of the group to which galaxies belong, and (v) the neutral hydrogen content. We present a new calibration of the optical diameter-based H I-deficiency parameter H Idef, employing a reference sample of isolated galaxies extracted from SPRING. At intermediate distances between Virgo and Coma, we identify a ring-like structure of galaxies constituted by three large filaments, each with a length of approximately 20h−1 Mpc, mostly composed of blue-cloud galaxies with stellar masses Mstar ≲ 1010 M⊙. The fraction of H I-deficient galaxies within the filament (∼30%) suggests that filaments are a transitioning environment between lower- and higher-overdensity environments in terms of H I content, as we find a clear progression from field galaxies to the filament and cluster galaxies for an increasing H Idef parameter. We classify the nuclear spectra according to the four-line Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich (BPT) and the two-line EWHα versus [NII]/Hα (WHAN) diagnostic diagrams, and investigate the variation in the fraction of active nuclei hosts with stellar mass, as well as their colours and environments. We observe that the fraction of low-ionisation nuclear emitting regions (LINERs) is a steep function of stellar mass, for example, it is consistent with zero up to Mstar ≲ 109.5 M⊙ and becomes ∼40% for Mstar ≳ 1010.5 M⊙, whereas, for Mstar ≲ 109 − 9.5 M⊙, almost the entire spectroscopic sample is constituted of galaxies with star-forming nuclei. We investigate whether the nuclear-excitation fractions depend predominantly on the stellar mass or, conversely, on the galaxy environment. In general, we observe that the mass dependence of the fraction of Seyfert nuclei is not very sensitive to the galaxy environment, whereas the fraction of star-forming nuclei is a steeper function of stellar mass in lower-density environments and in blue-cloud galaxies. We find that the fraction of LINERs depends on galaxy colour and, for Mstar ≳ 109.5 − 10 M⊙, increases in galaxies belonging to the green valley. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. In the hierarchical model of evolution of the Universe, galaxy mergers play an important role, especially at high redshifts. Interactions among galaxies appear to be associated with incidences of radio-loudness in quasars and it is of interest to study the galaxies that are in the process of interacting with each other, where there is at least one nucleus that is active in the radio regime. Aims. In order to understand the various processes taking place within colliding galaxies, it is important to study the radio and optical properties of these sources, as well as any possible correlations that might exist. Methods. To this end, we present optical long-slit spectroscopy data for ten pairs of interacting galaxies selected from SDSS-FIRST at redshifts of ∼0.05, observed using the multi-object double spectrographs at the Large Binocular Telescope. Results. We used line fluxes extracted from the spectra of the nuclear regions of galaxies to plot optical diagnostic diagrams and estimate the masses of the central supermassive black holes, as well as their Eddington ratios. Additionally, we used previously published Effelsberg radio telescope data at 4.85 GHz and FIRST survey data at 1.4 GHz to estimate radio spectral slopes and the radio-loudness parameters for all of the radio-detected sources. We also used WISE data to plot a mid-infrared colour-colour diagram. Conclusions. We see that while the sample of galaxies covers all of the classes on the optical diagnostic diagrams, the sources that are radio-detected fall in the composite or transition region of the diagram. Additionally, we notice a trend of the highest radio-loudness parameter in a pair of interacting galaxies being associated with the galaxy that hosts the more massive central supermassive black hole. We do not see any obvious trends with respect to the radio spectral slope, radio-loudness parameter, and Eddington ratio. With respect to the mid-infrared data of the galaxies detected by WISE, we see that most of them have some type of contribution from star formation, however, two of them seem to have a significant contribution from an AGN as well. We study the total and baryonic mass distributions of the deflector SDSS J0100+1818 through a full strong lensing analysis. The system is composed of an ultra-massive early-type galaxy at z = 0.581, with a total stellar mass of (1.5 ± 0.3)×1012 M⊙ and a stellar velocity dispersion of (450 ± 40) km s−1, surrounded by ten multiple images of three background sources, two of which are spectroscopically confirmed at z = 1.880. We took advantage of high-resolution HST photometry and VLT/X-shooter spectroscopy to measure the positions of the multiple images and performed a strong lensing study with the software GLEE. We tested different total mass profiles for the lens and modeled the background sources first as point-like and then as extended objects. We successfully predict the positions of the observed multiple images and reconstruct over approximately 7200 HST pixels the complex surface brightness distributions of the sources. We measured the cumulative total mass profile of the lens and find a total mass value of (9.1 ± 0.1)×1012 M⊙, within the Einstein radius of approximately 42 kpc, and stellar-over-total mass fractions ranging from (49 ± 12)%, at the half-light radius (Re = 9.3 kpc) of the lens galaxy, to (10 ± 2)%, in the outer regions (R = 70 kpc). These results suggest that the baryonic mass component of SDSS J0100+1818 is very concentrated in its core and that the lens early-type galaxy (or group) is immersed in a massive dark matter halo, which allows it to act as a powerful gravitational lens, creating multiple images with exceptional angular separations. This is consistent with what has been found in other ultra-high-mass candidates at intermediate redshift. We also measured the physical sizes of the distant sources, resolving them down to a few hundred parsecs. Finally, we quantify and discuss a relevant source of systematic uncertainties on the reconstructed sizes of background galaxies, associated with the adopted lens total mass model. We present initial results from our JWST NIRSpec program to study the α -abundances in the M31 disk. The Milky Way has two chemically-defined disks, the low- α and high- α disks, which are closely related to the thin and thick disks, respectively. The origin of the two populations and the α -bimodality between them is not entirely clear, although there are now several models that can reproduce the observed features. To help constrain the models and discern the origin, we have undertaken a study of the chemical abundances of the M31 disk using JWST NIRSpec, in order to determine whether stars in M31's disk also show an α -abundance bimodality. Approximately 100 stars were observed in our single NIRSpec field at a projected distance of 18 kpc from the M31 center. The 1-D extracted spectra have an average signal-to-noise ratio of 85 leading to statistical metallicity precision of 0.016 dex, α -abundance precision of 0.012 dex, and a radial velocity precision 8 km s-1 (mostly from systematics). The initial results indicate that, in contrast to the Milky Way, there is no α -bimodality in the M31 disk, and no low- α sequence. The entire stellar population falls along a single chemical sequence very similar to the MW's high- α component which had a high star formation rate. While this is somewhat unexpected, the result is not that surprising based on other studies that found the M31 disk has a larger velocity dispersion than the MW and is dominated by a thick component. Dramatic recent progress in understanding galactic chemical evolution (GCE) has been driven partly by direct observations of the distant past with HST and JWST and partly by archeaological interpretation of stellar abundances from giant high-resolution spectroscopic surveys (APOGEE, GALAH) and the complementary power of Gaia astrometry and photometry. Focusing on archaeology, I give a rapid-fire, and I hope synthesizing, review of work my collaborators and I have done on theoretical modeling and observational interpretation. I discuss (1) the interleaved but distinguishable roles of stellar scale astrophysics and galactic scale astrophysics in governing GCE, (2) the use of abundance ratio trends to empirically infer nucleosynthetic yields, (3) the uncertainty in the overall scale of yields and its degeneracy with the importance of galactic outflows, (4) the emergence of equilibrium in GCE, (5) the dimensionality of the stellar distribution in chemical abundance space, and (6) insights from chemical abundances on the early history of the Milky Way, including measurements of the intrinsic scatter of abundance ratios in metal-poor stars (-2≤[Fe/H] ≤-1) suggesting that a typical halo star at this metallicity is enriched by the products of N ∼50 supernovae mixed over ∼105 M ⊚ of star-forming gas. We present GECKOS (Generalising Edge-on galaxies and their Chemical bimodalities, Kinematics, and Outflows out to Solar environments), a new ESO VLT/MUSE large program. The main aim of GECKOS is to reveal the variation in key physical processes of disk formation by connecting Galactic Archaeology with integral field spectroscopic observations of nearby galaxies. Edge-on galaxies are ideal for this task: they allow us to disentangle the assembly history imprinted in thick disks and provide the greatest insights into outflows. The GECKOS sample of 35 nearby edge-on disk galaxies is designed to trace the assembly histories and properties of galaxies across a large range of star formation rates, bulge-to-total ratios, and boxy and non-boxy bulges. GECKOS will deliver spatially resolved measurements of stellar abundances, ages, and kinematics, as well as ionised gas metallicities, ionisation param- eters, pressure, and inflow and outflow kinematics; all key parameters for building a complete chemodynamical picture of disk galaxies. With these data, we aim to extend Galactic analysis methods to the wider galaxy population, reaping the benefits of detailed Milky Way studies, while probing the diverse mechanisms of galaxy evolution. We analysed the high-resolution (up to ∼0.2 arcsec) ALMA CO (2–1) and 1.3 mm dust continuum data of eight gas-rich post-starburst galaxies (PSBs) in the local Universe, six of which had been studied by a recent work. In contrast to this study reporting the detections of extraordinarily compact (i.e. unresolved) reservoirs of molecular gas in the six PSBs, our visibility-plane analysis resolves the CO (2–1) emission in all eight PSBs with effective radii (R e, CO) of |$0.8_{-0.4}^{+0.9}$|  kpc, typically consisting of gaseous components at both circumnuclear and extended disc scales. With this new analysis, we find that the CO sizes of gas-rich PSBs are compact with respect to their stellar sizes (median ratio |$=0.43_{-0.21}^{+0.27}$|⁠), but comparable to the sizes of the gas discs seen in local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) and early-type galaxies. We also find that the CO-to-stellar size ratio of gas-rich PSBs is potentially correlated with the gas depletion time-scale, placing them as transitional objects between LIRGs and early-type galaxies from an evolutionary perspective. Finally, the star formation efficiency of the observed PSBs appear consistent with those of star-forming galaxies on the Kennicutt–Schmidt relation, showing no sign of suppressed star formation from turbulent heating. We combine results from deep ALMA observations of massive (M* > 1010 M⊙) galaxies at different redshifts to show that the column density of their interstellar medium (ISM) rapidly increases toward early cosmic epochs. Our analysis includes objects from the ASPECS and ALPINE large programs, as well as individual observations of z ∼ 6 quasar hosts. When accounting for non-detections and correcting for selection effects, we find that the median surface density of the ISM of the massive galaxy population evolves as ∼(1 + z)3.3. This means that the ISM column density toward the nucleus of a z > 3 galaxy is typically > 100 times larger than locally, and it may reach values as high as Compton-thick at z ≳ 6. Remarkably, the median ISM column density is on the same order of what is measured from X-ray observations of large active galactic nucleus (AGN) samples already at z ≳ 2. We have developed a simple analytic model for the spatial distribution of ISM clouds within galaxies, and estimate the total covering factor toward active nuclei when obscuration by ISM clouds on the host scale is added to that of parsec-scale circumnuclear material (the so-called torus). The model includes clouds with a distribution of sizes, masses, and surface densities, and also allows for an evolution of the characteristic cloud surface density with redshift, Σc, * ∝ (1 + z)γ. We show that, for γ = 2, such a model successfully reproduces the increase in the obscured AGN fraction with redshift that is commonly observed in deep X-ray surveys, both when different absorption thresholds and AGN luminosities are considered. Our results suggest that 80–90% of supermassive black holes in the early Universe (z > 6 − 8) are hidden to our view, primarily by the ISM in their hosts. We finally discuss the implications of our results and how they can be tested observationally with current and forthcoming facilities (e.g., VLT, E-ELT, ALMA, and JWST) and with next-generation X-ray imaging satellites. By extrapolating the observed X-ray nebulae around local AGN to the environments of supermassive black holes at high redshifts, we find ≲1″ nebulae impose stringent design constraints on the spatial resolution of any future X-ray imaging Great Observatory in the coming decades. Context. Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) offer a promising tool for tracing the cosmic history of star formation, especially at high redshift, where conventional methods are known to suffer from intrinsic biases. Previous studies of GRB host galaxies at low redshift showed that high surface density of stellar mass and high surface density of star formation rate (SFR) can potentially enhance the GRB production. Evaluating the effect of such stellar densities at high redshift is therefore crucial to fully control the ability of long GRBs for probing the activity of star formation in the distant Universe. Aims. We assess how the size, stellar mass, and star formation rate surface densities of distant galaxies affect the probability of their hosting a long GRB, using a sample of GRB hosts at z > 1 and a control sample of star-forming sources from the field. Methods. We gathered a sample of 45 GRB host galaxies at 1 < z < 3.1 observed with the Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 camera in the near-infrared. Our subsample at 1 < z < 2 has cumulative distributions of redshift and stellar mass consistent with the host galaxies of known unbiased GRB samples, while our GRB host selection at 2 < z < 3.1 has lower statistics and is probably biased toward the high end of the stellar mass function. Using the GALFIT parametric approach, we modeled the GRB host light profile with a Sérsic component and derived the half-light radius for 35 GRB hosts, which we used to estimate the star formation rate and stellar mass surface densities of each object. We compared the distribution of these physical quantities to the SFR-weighted properties of a complete sample of star-forming galaxies from the 3D-HST deep survey at a comparable redshift and stellar mass. Results. We show that similarly to z < 1, GRB hosts are smaller in size and they have higher stellar mass and star formation rate surface densities than field galaxies at 1 < z < 2. Interestingly, this result is robust even when separately considering the hosts of GRBs with optically bright afterglows and the hosts of dark GRBs, as the two subsamples share similar size distributions. At z > 2, however, GRB hosts appear to have sizes and stellar mass surface densities more consistent with those characterizing the field galaxies. This may reveal an evolution with redshift of the bias between GRB hosts and the overall population of star-forming sources, although we cannot exclude that our result at z > 2 is also affected by the prevalence of dark GRBs in our selection. Conclusions. In addition to a possible trend toward a low-metallicity environment, other environmental properties such as stellar density appear to play a role in the formation of long GRBs, at least up to z ∼ 2. Context. The identification and characterization of low surface brightness (LSB) stellar structures around galaxies such as tidal debris of ongoing or past collisions is essential to constrain models of galactic evolution. So far most efforts have focused on the numerical census of samples of varying sizes, either through visual inspection or more recently with deep learning. Detailed analyses including photometry have been carried out for a small number of objects, essentially because of the lack of convenient tools able to precisely characterize tidal structures around large samples of galaxies. Aims. Our goal is to characterize in detail, and in particular obtain quantitative measurements, of LSB structures identified in deep images of samples consisting of hundreds of galaxies. Methods. We developed an online annotation tool that enables contributors to delineate the shapes of diffuse extended stellar structures with precision, as well as artifacts or foreground structures. All parameters are automatically stored in a database which may be queried to retrieve quantitative measurements. We annotated LSB structures around 352 nearby massive galaxies with deep images obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope as part of two large programs: Mass Assembly of early-Type GaLAxies with their fine Structures and Ultraviolet Near Infrared Optical Northern Survey/Canada-France Imaging Survey. Each LSB structure was delineated and labeled according to its likely nature: stellar shells, streams associated with a disrupted satellite, tails that formed in major mergers, ghost reflections, or cirrus. Results. From our database containing 8441 annotations, the area, size, median surface brightness, and distance to the host of 228 structures were computed. The results confirm the fact that tidal structures defined as streams are thinner than tails, as expected by numerical simulations. In addition, tidal tails appear to exhibit a higher surface brightness than streams (by about 1 mag), which may be related to different survival times for the two types of collisional debris. We did not detect any tidal feature fainter than 27.5 magarcsec−2, while the nominal surface brightness limits of our surveys range between 28.3 and 29 magarcsec−2, a difference that needs to be taken into account when estimating the sensitivity of future surveys to identify LSB structures. We compiled an annotation database of observed LSB structures around nearby massive galaxies including tidal features that may be used for quantitative analysis and as a training set for machine learning algorithms. Compact star formation appears to be generally common in dusty star-forming galaxies (SFGs). However, its role in the framework set by the scaling relations in galaxy evolution remains to be understood. In this work we follow up on the galaxy sample from the GOODS-ALMA 2.0 survey, an ALMA blind survey at 1.1 mm covering a continuous area of 72.42 arcmin2 using two array configurations. We derived physical properties, such as star formation rates, gas fractions, depletion timescales, and dust temperatures for the galaxy sample built from the survey. There exists a subset of galaxies that exhibit starburst-like short depletion timescales, but they are located within the scatter of the so-called main sequence of SFGs. These are dubbed starbursts in the main sequence and display the most compact star formation and they are characterized by the shortest depletion timescales, lowest gas fractions, and highest dust temperatures of the galaxy sample, compared to typical SFGs at the same stellar mass and redshift. They are also very massive, accounting for ∼60% of the most massive galaxies in the sample (log(M*/M⊙) > 11.0). We find trends between the areas of the ongoing star formation regions and the derived physical properties for the sample, unveiling the role of compact star formation as a physical driver of these properties. Starbursts in the main sequence appear to be the extreme cases of these trends. We discuss possible scenarios of galaxy evolution to explain the results drawn from our galaxy sample. Our findings suggest that the star formation rate is sustained in SFGs by gas and star formation compression, keeping them within the main sequence even when their gas fractions are low and they are presumably on the way to quiescence. Tracing the emergence of the massive quiescent galaxy (QG) population requires the build-up of reliable quenched samples by distinguishing these systems from red, dusty star-forming sources. We present Hubble Space Telescope WFC3/G141 grism spectra of ten quiescent galaxy candidates selected at 2.5 < z < 3.5 in the COSMOS field. Spectroscopic confirmation for the whole sample is obtained within one to three orbits through the detection of strong spectral breaks and Balmer absorption lines. When their spectra are combined with optical to near-infrared photometry, star-forming solutions are formally rejected for the entire sample. Broad spectral indices are consistent with the presence of young A-type stars, which indicates that the last major episode of star formation has taken place no earlier than ∼300–800 Myr prior to observation. This confirms clues from their post-starburst UVJ colors. Marginalising over three different slopes of the dust attenuation curve, we obtain young mass-weighted ages and an average peak star formation rate (SFR) of ∼103 M⊙ yr−1 at zformation ∼ 3.5. Although mid- and far-IR data are too shallow to determine the obscured SFR on a galaxy-by-galaxy basis, the mean stacked emission from 3 GHz data constrains the level of residual-obscured SFR to be globally below 50 M⊙ yr−1, three times below the scatter of the coeval main sequence. Alternatively, the very same radio detection suggests a widespread radio-mode feedback by active galactic nuclei (AGN) four times stronger than in z ∼ 1.8 massive QGs. This is accompanied by a 30% fraction of X-ray luminous AGN with a black hole accretion rate per unit SFR enhanced by a factor of ∼30 with respect to similarly massive QGs at lower redshift. The average compact, high Sérsic index morphologies of the galaxies in this sample, coupled with their young mass-weighted ages, suggest that the mechanisms responsible for the development of a spheroidal component might be concomitant with (or preceding) those causing their quenching. Aims. We aim to perform consistent comparisons between observations and simulations on the mass dependence of the galaxy major merger fraction at low redshift over an unprecedentedly wide range of stellar masses (∼109 to 1012 M⊙). Methods. We first carry out forward modelling of ideal synthetic images of major mergers and non-mergers selected from the Next Generation Illustris Simulations (IllustrisTNG) to include major observational effects. We then train deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) using realistic mock observations of galaxy samples from the simulations. Subsequently, we apply the trained CNNs to real the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) images of galaxies selected from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. Based on the major merger samples, which are detected in a consistent manner in the observations and simulations, we determine the dependence of major merger fraction on stellar mass at z ∼ 0.15 and make comparisons between the two. Results. The detected major merger fraction in the GAMA/KiDS observations has a fairly mild decreasing trend with increasing stellar mass over the mass range 109 M⊙ <  M* <  1011.5 M⊙. There is good agreement in the mass dependence of the major merger fraction in the GAMA/KiDS observations and the IllustrisTNG simulations over 109.5 M⊙ <  M* <  1010.5 M⊙. However, the observations and the simulations show some differences at M* >  1010.5 M⊙, possibly due to the supermassive blackhole feedback in its low-accretion state in the simulations which causes a sharp transition in the quenched fractions at this mass scale. We use simulations to study the growth of a pseudobulge in an isolated thin exponential stellar disc embedded in a static spherical halo. We observe a transition from later to earlier morphological types and an increase in bar prominence for higher disc-to-halo mass ratios, for lower disc-to-halo size ratios, and for lower halo concentrations. We compute bulge-to-total stellar mass ratios B/T by fitting a two-component Sérsic-exponential surface-density distribution. The final B/T is strongly related to the disc's fractional contribution fd to the total gravitational acceleration at the optical radius. The formula B/T = 0.5 fd1.8 fits the simulations to an accuracy of 30%, is consistent with observational measurements of B/T and fd as a function of luminosity, and reproduces the observed relation between B/T and stellar mass when incorporated into the GALICS 2.0 semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. The central regions of disc galaxies hold clues to the processes that dominate their formation and evolution. To exploit this, the TIMER project has obtained high signal-to-noise and spatial resolution integral-field spectroscopy data of the inner few kpc of 21 nearby massive barred galaxies, which allows studies of the stellar kinematics in their central regions with unprecedented spatial resolution. We confirm theoretical predictions of the effects of bars on stellar kinematics and identify box/peanuts through kinematic signatures in mildly and moderately inclined galaxies, finding a lower limit to the fraction of massive barred galaxies with box/peanuts at ∼62%. Further, we provide kinematic evidence of the connection between barlenses, box/peanuts, and bars. We establish the presence of nuclear discs in 19 galaxies and show that their kinematics are characterised by near-circular orbits with low pressure support and that they are fully consistent with the bar-driven secular evolution picture for their formation. In fact, we show that these nuclear discs have, in the region where they dominate, larger rotational support than the underlying main galaxy disc. In addition, we define a kinematic radius for the nuclear discs and show that it relates to bar radius, ellipticity and strength, and bar-to-total ratio. Comparing our results with photometric studies of galaxy bulges, we find that careful, state-of-the-art galaxy image decompositions are generally able to discern nuclear discs from classical bulges if the images employed have high enough physical spatial resolution. In fact, we show that nuclear discs are typically identified in such image decompositions as photometric bulges with (near-)exponential profiles. However, we find that the presence of composite bulges (galaxies hosting both a classical bulge and a nuclear disc) can often be unnoticed in studies based on photometry alone and suggest a more stringent threshold to the Sérsic index to identify galaxies with pure classical bulges. We investigate the properties of a sample of 35 galaxies, detected with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 1.1 mm in the GOODS-ALMA field (area of 69 arcmin2, resolution = 0.60″, rms ≃ 0.18 mJy beam−1). Using the ultraviolet-to-radio deep multiwavelength coverage of the GOODS–South field, we fit the spectral energy distributions of these galaxies to derive their key physical properties. The galaxies detected by ALMA are among the most massive at z = 2−4 (M⋆, med = 8.5 × 1010M⊙) and they are either starburst or located in the upper part of the galaxy star-forming main sequence. A significant portion of our galaxy population (∼40%), located at z ∼ 2.5 − 3, exhibits abnormally low gas fractions. The sizes of these galaxies, measured with ALMA, are compatible with the trend between the rest-frame 5000 Å size and stellar mass observed for z ∼ 2 elliptical galaxies, suggesting that they are building compact bulges. We show that there is a strong link between star formation surface density (at 1.1 mm) and gas depletion time: The more compact a galaxy's star-forming region is, the shorter its lifetime will be (without gas replenishment). The identified compact sources associated with relatively short depletion timescales (∼100 Myr) are the ideal candidates to be the progenitors of compact elliptical galaxies at z ∼ 2. Context. Isolated early-type galaxies are evolving in unusually poor environments for this morphological family, which is typical of cluster inhabitants. We investigate the mechanisms driving the evolution of these galaxies. Aims. Several studies indicate that interactions, accretions, and merging episodes leave their signature on the galaxy structure, from the nucleus down to the faint outskirts. We focus on revealing such signatures, if any, in a sample of isolated early-type galaxies, and we quantitatively revise their galaxy classification. Methods. We observed 20 (out of 104) isolated early-type galaxies, selected from the AMIGA catalog, with the 4KCCD camera at the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey g and r bands. These are the deepest observations of a sample of isolated early-type galaxies so far: on average, the light profiles reach μg ≈ 28.11 ± 0.70 mag arcsec−2 and μr ≈ 27.36 ± 0.68 mag arcsec−2. The analysis was performed using the AIDA package, providing point spread function-corrected 2D surface photometry up to the galaxy outskirts. The package provides a model of the 2D galaxy light distribution, which after model subtraction enhances the fine and peculiar structures in the residual image of the galaxies. Results. Our re-classification suggests that the sample is composed of bona fide early-type galaxies spanning from ellipticals to late-S0s galaxies. Most of the surface brightness profiles are best fitted with a bulge plus disc model, suggesting the presence of an underlying disc structure. The residuals obtained after the model subtraction show the nearly ubiquitous presence of fine structures, such as shells, stellar fans, rings, and tails. Shell systems are revealed in about 60% of these galaxies. Conclusions. Because interaction, accretion, and merging events are widely interpreted as the origin of the fans, ripples, shells and tails in galaxies, we suggest that most of these isolated early-type galaxies have experienced such events. Quenched massive spiral galaxies have attracted great attention recently, as more data are available to constrain their environment and cold gas content. However, the quenching mechanism is still uncertain, as it depends on the mass range and baryon budget of the galaxy. In this letter, we report the identification of a rare population of very massive, quenched spiral galaxies with stellar mass ≳1011 M⊙ and halo mass ≳1013 M⊙ from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey at redshift z ∼ 0.1. Our CO observations using the IRAM (Institute for Radio Astronomy in the Millimeter Range) 30-m telescope show that these galaxies contain only a small amount of molecular gas. Similar galaxies are also seen in the state-of-the-art semi-analytical models and hydrodynamical simulations. It is found from these theoretical models that these quenched spiral galaxies harbour massive black holes, suggesting that feedback from the central black holes has quenched these spiral galaxies. Many astrophysical and galaxy-scale cosmological problems require a well determined gravitational potential which is often modeled by observers under strong assumptions. Globular clusters (GCs) surrounding galaxies can be used as dynamical tracers of the luminous and dark matter distribution at large (kpc) scales. A natural assumption for modeling the gravitational potential is that GCs accreted in the same dwarf galaxy merger event move at the present time on similar orbits in the host galaxy and should therefore have similar actions. We investigate this idea in one realistic Milky Way like galaxy of the cosmological N-body simulation suite Auriga. We show how the actions of accreted stellar particles in the simulation evolve and that minimizing the standard deviation of GCs in action space, however, cannot constrain the true potential. We present a synthetic galaxy lightcone specially designed for narrow-band optical photometric surveys. To reduce time-discreteness effects, unlike previous works, we directly include the lightcone construction in the L-Galaxies semi-analytic model applied to the subhalo merger trees of the Millennium simulation. Additionally, we add a model for the nebular emission in star-forming regions, which is crucial for correctly predicting the narrow- and medium-band photometry of galaxies. Specifically, we consider, individually for each galaxy, the contribution of 9 different lines: Lyα (1216 Å), Hβ (4861 Å), Hα (6563 Å), [O II] (3727 Å, 3729 Å), [O III] (4959 Å, 5007 Å), [Ne III] (3870 Å), [O I] (6300 Å), [N II] (6548 Å, 6583 Å), and [S II] (6717 Å, 6731 Å). We validate our lightcone by comparing galaxy number counts, angular clustering, and Hα, Hβ, [O II], and [O III]5007 luminosity functions to a compilation of observations. As an application of our mock lightcones, we generated catalogues tailored for J-PLUS, a large optical galaxy survey featuring five broad-band and seven medium-band filters. We study the ability of the survey to correctly identify, with a simple three-filter method, a population of emission-line galaxies at various redshifts. We show that the 4000 Å break in the spectral energy distribution of galaxies can be misidentified as line emission. However, all significant excess (> 0.4 mag) can be correctly and unambiguously attributed to emission-line galaxies. Our catalogues are publicly released to facilitate their use in interpreting narrow-band surveys and in quantifying the impact of line emission in broad-band photometry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of the cluster of galaxies CGr32 (M200 ≃ 2 × 1014 M⊙) at z = 0.73 reveal the presence of two massive star-forming galaxies with extended tails of diffuse gas detected in the [O II]λλ3727–3729 Å emission-line doublet. The tails, which have a cometary shape with a typical surface brightness of a few 10−18 erg s−1 cm−2 arcsec−2, extend up to ≃100 kpc (projected distance) from the galaxy discs, and are not associated with any stellar component. All this observational evidence suggests that the gas was removed during a ram-pressure stripping event. This observation is thus the first evidence that dynamical interactions with the intracluster medium were active when the Universe was only half its present age. The density of the gas derived using the observed [O II]λ3729/[O II]λ3726 line ratio implies a very short recombination time, suggesting that a source of ionisation is necessary to keep the gas ionised within the tail. Aims. We present new 2D high resolution Fabry–Perot spectroscopic observations of 152 star-forming galaxies that are part of the Herschel Reference Survey (HRS), which is a complete K-band selected, volume-limited sample of nearby galaxies that spans a wide range of stellar mass and morphological types. Methods. By using improved data reduction techniques, that provide adaptive binning based on Voronoi tessellation, and using large field-of-view observations, we derived high spectral resolution (R >  10 000) Hα datacubes from which we computed Hα maps and radial 2D velocity fields that are based on several of thousand independent measurements. A robust method based on such fields allowed us to accurately compute rotation curves and kinematical parameters, for which uncertainties are calculated using a method based on the power spectrum of the residual velocity fields. Results. We checked the consistency of the rotation curves by comparing our maximum rotational velocities to those derived from H I data, and by computing the i-band, NIR, stellar, and baryonic Tully-Fisher relations. We used this set of kinematical data combined with those available at other frequencies to study, for the first time, the relation between the dynamical and the total baryonic mass (stars, atomic and molecular gas, metals, and dust) and to derive the baryonic and dynamical main sequence on a representative sample of the local universe. It remains a challenge to assess the merger fraction of galaxies at different cosmic epochs in order to probe the evolution of their mass assembly. Using the ILLUSTRIS cosmological simulation project, we investigate the relation between the separation of galaxies in a pair, both in velocity and projected spatial separation space, and the probability that these interacting galaxies will merge in the future. From this analysis, we propose a new set of criteria to select close pairs of galaxies along with a new corrective term to be applied to the computation of the galaxy merger fraction. We then probe the evolution of the major and minor merger fraction using the latest Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) deep observations over the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, Hubble Deep Field South, COSMOS-Gr30, and Abell 2744 regions. From a parent sample of 2483 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts, we identify 366 close pairs spread over a large range of redshifts (0.2 <  z <  6) and stellar masses (107 − 1011M⊙). Using the stellar mass ratio between the secondary and primary galaxy as a proxy to split the sample into major, minor, and very minor mergers, we found a total of 183 major, 142 minor, and 47 very minor close pairs corresponding to a mass ratio range of 1:1–1:6, 1:6–1:100, and lower than 1:100, respectively. Due to completeness issues, we do not consider the very minor pairs in the analysis. Overall, the major merger fraction increases up to z ≈ 2−3 reaching 25% for pairs where the most massive galaxy has a stellar mass M⋆ ≥ 109.5M⊙. Beyond this redshift, the fraction decreases down to ∼5% at z ≈ 6. The major merger fraction for lower-mass primary galaxies with M⋆ ≤ 109.5M⊙ seems to follow a more constant evolutionary trend with redshift. Thanks to the addition of new MUSE fields and new selection criteria, the increased statistics of the pair samples allow us to significantly shorten the error bars compared to our previous analysis. The evolution of the minor merger fraction is roughly constant with cosmic time, with a fraction of 20% at z <  3 and a slow decrease to 8−13% in the redshift range 3 ≤ z ≤ 6. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) catalog for SPectroscoic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS) DR14 cluster program value-added catalog. We list the 416 BCGs identified as part of this process, along with their stellar mass, star formation rates (SFRs), and morphological properties. We identified the BCGs based on the available spectroscopic data from SPIDERS and photometric data from SDSS. We computed stellar masses and SFRs of the BCGs on the basis of SDSS, WISE, and GALEX photometry using spectral energy distribution fitting. Morphological properties for all BCGs were derived by Sersic profile fitting using the software package SIGMA in different optical bands (g,r,i). We combined this catalog with the BCGs of galaxy groups and clusters extracted from the deeper AEGIS, CDFS, COSMOS, XMM-CFHTLS, and XMM-XXL surveys to study the stellar mass–halo mass relation using the largest sample of X-ray groups and clusters known to date. This result suggests that the mass growth of the central galaxy is controlled by the hierarchical mass growth of the host halo. We find a strong correlation between the stellar mass of BCGs and the mass of their host halos. This relation shows no evolution since z ∼ 0.65. We measure a mean scatter of 0.21 and 0.25 for the stellar mass of BCGs in a given halo mass at low (0.1 <  z <  0.3) and high (0.3 <  z <  0.65) redshifts, respectively. We further demonstrate that the BCG mass is covariant with the richness of the host halos in the very X-ray luminous systems. We also find evidence that part of the scatter between X-ray luminosity and richness can be reduced by considering stellar mass as an additional variable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The Arcturus stream is an over-density of stars in velocity space and its origin has been much debated recently without any clear conclusion. The (classical) dissolved open cluster origin is essentially refuted; instead the discussions try to distinguish between an accretion, a resonant, or an external-perturbation origin for the stream. As kinematic structures are observational footprints of ongoing and past dynamical processes in disc galaxies, resolving the nature of the Arcturus stream may provide clues to the formation history of the Milky Way and its stellar populations. Aims. We aim to characterise the kinematical and chemical properties of the Arcturus stream in order to resolve its origin. Methods. The space velocities, angular momenta, and actions for a sample of more than 5.8 million stars, composed from Gaia DR2 were analysed with a wavelet transform method to characterise kinematic over-densities in the Galactic disc. The kinematic characteristics of each identified group is used to select possible members of the groups from the GALAH and APOGEE spectroscopic surveys to further study and constrain their chemical properties. Results. In the velocity and angular momentum spaces the already known Sirius, Pleiades, Hyades, Hercules, AF06, Arcturus and KFR08 streams are clearly identified. The Hercules stream appears to be a mixture of thin and thick disc stars. The Arcturus stream, as well as the AF06 and KFR08 streams, are high-velocity and low-angular momentum structures with chemical compositions similar to the thick disc. These three groups extend further from the Galactic plane compared to the Hercules stream. The detections of all the groups were spaced by approximately 20 − 30 km s−1 in azimuthal velocity. Conclusions. A wide spread of chemical abundances within the Arcturus stream indicates that the group is not a dissolved open cluster. Instead the Arcturus stream, together with the AF06 and KFR08 streams, are more likely to be part of a phase-space wave, that could have been caused by a merger event. This conclusion is based on that the different structures are detected in steps of 20 − 30 km s−1 in azimuthal velocity, that the kinematic and chemical features are different from what is expected for bar-originated structures, and that the higher-velocity streams extend further from the disc than bar-originated structures. Aims. We perform a comprehensive study of the stellar population properties (formation epoch, age, metallicity, and extinction) of quiescent galaxies as a function of size and stellar mass to constrain the physical mechanism governing the stellar mass assembly and the likely evolutive scenarios that explain their growth in size. Methods. After selecting all the quiescent galaxies from the ALHAMBRA survey by the dust-corrected stellar mass–colour diagram, we built a shared sample of ∼850 quiescent galaxies with reliable measurements of sizes from the HST. This sample is complete in stellar mass and luminosity, I ≤ 23. The stellar population properties were retrieved using the fitting code for spectral energy distributions called MUlti-Filter FITting for stellar population diagnostics (MUFFIT) with various sets of composite stellar population models. Age, formation epoch, metallicity, and extinction were studied on the stellar mass–size plane as function of size through a Monte Carlo approach. This accounted for uncertainties and degeneracy effects amongst stellar population properties. Results. The stellar population properties of quiescent galaxies and their stellar mass and size since z ∼ 1 are correlated. At fixed stellar mass, the more compact the quiescent galaxy, the older and richer in metals it is (1 Gyr and 0.1 dex, respectively). In addition, more compact galaxies may present slight lower extinctions than their more extended counterparts at the same stellar mass (< 0.1 mag). By means of studying constant regions of stellar population properties across the stellar mass–size plane, we obtained empirical relations to constrain the physical mechanism that governs the stellar mass assembly of the form M⋆ ∝ rcα, where α amounts to 0.50–0.55 ± 0.09. There are indications that support the idea that the velocity dispersion is tightly correlated with the stellar content of galaxies. The mechanisms driving the evolution of stellar populations can therefore be partly linked to the dynamical properties of galaxies, along with their gravitational potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
