We have measured the angular autocorrelation function of near-infrared galaxies in SERVS + DeepDrill, the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey and its follow-up survey of the Deep Drilling Fields, in three large fields totalling over 20 deg2 on the sky, observed in two bands centred on 3.6 and 4.5 μ m. We performed this analysis on the full sample as well as on sources selected by [3.6]–[4.5] colour in order to probe clustering for different redshift regimes. We estimated the spatial correlation strength as well, using the redshift distribution from S-COSMOS with the same source selection. The strongest clustering was found for our bluest subsample, with 〈 z 〉 ∼ 0.7, which has the narrowest redshift distribution of all our subsamples. We compare these estimates to previous results from the literature, but also to estimates derived from mock samples, selected in the same way as the observational data, using deep light-cones generated from the SHARK semi-analytical model of galaxy formation. For all simulated (sub)samples, we find a slightly steeper slope than for the corresponding observed ones, but the spatial clustering length is comparable in most cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jets of energetic particles, as seen in FR type-I and FR type-II sources, ejected from the centre of radio-loud AGN affect the sources surrounding the intracluster medium/intergalactic medium. Placing constraints on the age of such sources is important in order to measure the jet powers and determine the effects on feedback. To evaluate the age of these sources using spectral age models, we require high-resolution multiwavelength data. The new sensitive and high-resolution MIGHTEE survey of the XMM -LSS field, along with data from the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) provide data taken at different frequencies with similar resolution, which enables us to determine the spectral age distribution for radio-loud AGN in the survey field. In this study, we present a sample of 28 radio galaxies with their best-fitting spectral age distribution analysed using the Jaffe–Perola (JP) model on a pixel-by-pixel basis. Fits are generally good, and objects in our sample show maximum ages within the range of 2.8 to 115 Myr with a median of 8.71 Myr. High-resolution maps over a range of frequencies are required to observe detailed age distributions for small sources, and high-sensitivity maps will be needed in order to observe fainter extended emission. We do not observe any correlation between the total physical size of the sources and their age, and we speculate that both dynamical models and the approach to spectral age analysis may need some modification to account for our observations. We present the first measurement of the H  i mass function (HIMF) using data from MeerKAT, based on 276 direct detections from the MeerKAT International GigaHertz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) Survey Early Science data covering a period of approximately a billion years (0 ≤ |$z$| ≤ 0.084). This is the first HIMF measured using interferometric data over non-group or cluster field, i.e. a deep blank field. We constrain the parameters of the Schechter function that describes the HIMF with two different methods: |$1/V_{\rm max}$| and modified maximum likelihood (MML). We find a low-mass slope |$\alpha =-1.29^{+0.37}_{-0.26}$| , 'knee' mass |$\log _{10}(M_{*}/{\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }}) = 10.07^{+0.24}_{-0.24}$| and normalization |$\log _{10}(\phi _{*}/\rm Mpc^{-3})=-2.34^{+0.32}_{-0.36}$| (H 0 = 67.4 km s−1 Mpc−1) for |$1/V_{\rm max}$| , and |$\alpha =-1.44^{+0.13}_{-0.10}$| , 'knee' mass |$\log _{10}(M_{*}/{\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }}) = 10.22^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$| and normalization |$\log _{10}(\phi _{*}/\rm Mpc^{-3})=-2.52^{+0.19}_{-0.14}$| for MML. When using |$1/V_{\rm max}$| we find both the low-mass slope and 'knee' mass to be consistent within 1σ with previous studies based on single-dish surveys. The cosmological mass density of H  i is found to be slightly larger than previously reported: |$\Omega _{\rm H\,{\small I}}=5.46^{+0.94}_{-0.99} \times 10^{-4}\,h^{-1}_{67.4}$| from |$1/V_{\rm max}$| and |$\Omega _{\rm H\,{\small I}}=6.31^{+0.31}_{-0.31} \times 10^{-4}\,h^{-1}_{67.4}$| from MML but consistent within the uncertainties. We present a complete structural analysis of the ellipticals (E), diffuse bulges (dB), compact bulges (cB), and discs (D) within a redshift range 0 < z < 1, and stellar mass log10(M*/M⊙) ≥ 9.5 volume-limited sample drawn from the combined DEVILS and HST -COSMOS region. We use the profit code to profile over ∼35 000 galaxies for which visual classification into single or double component was pre-defined in Paper-I. Over this redshift range, we see a growth in the total stellar mass density (SMD) of a factor of 1.5. At all epochs we find that the dominant structure, contributing to the total SMD, is the disc, and holds a fairly constant share of |$\sim 60{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the total SMD from z  = 0.8 to z  = 0.2, dropping to |$\sim 30{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| at z  = 0.0 (representing |$\sim 33{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| decline in the total disc SMD). Other classes (E, dB, and cB) show steady growth in their numbers and integrated stellar mass densities. By number, the most dramatic change across the full mass range is in the growth of diffuse bulges. In terms of total SMD, the biggest gain is an increase in massive elliptical systems, rising from 20 per cent at z  = 0.8 to equal that of discs at z  = 0.0 (30 per cent) representing an absolute mass growth of a factor of 2.5. Overall, we see a clear picture of the emergence and growth of all three classes of spheroids over the past 8 Gyr, and infer that in the later half of the Universe's timeline spheroid-forming processes and pathways (secular evolution, mass-accretion, and mergers) appear to dominate mass transformation over quiescent disc growth. Using high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging data, we perform a visual morphological classification of ∼36 000 galaxies at z < 1 in the deep extragalactic visible legacy survey/cosmological evolution survey region. As the main goal of this study, we derive the stellar mass function (SMF) and stellar mass density (SMD) sub-divided by morphological types. We find that visual morphological classification using optical imaging is increasingly difficult at z > 1 as the fraction of irregular galaxies and merger systems (when observed at rest-frame UV/blue wavelengths) dramatically increases. We determine that roughly two-thirds of the total stellar mass of the Universe today was in place by z ∼ 1. Double-component galaxies dominate the SMD at all epochs and increase in their contribution to the stellar mass budget to the present day. Elliptical galaxies are the second most dominant morphological type and increase their SMD by ∼2.5 times, while by contrast, the pure-disc population significantly decreases by |$\sim 85{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠. According to the evolution of both high- and low-mass ends of the SMF, we find that mergers and in situ evolution in discs are both present at z < 1, and conclude that double-component galaxies are predominantly being built by the in situ evolution in discs (apparent as the growth of the low-mass end with time), while mergers are likely responsible for the growth of ellipticals (apparent as the increase of intermediate/high-mass end). We examine the 1.4 GHz radio luminosities of galaxies arising from star formation and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) within the state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodynamic simulation Simba. Simba grows black holes via gravitational torque limited accretion from cold gas and Bondi accretion from hot gas, and employs AGN feedback including jets at low Eddington ratios. We define a population of radio loud AGNs (RLAGNs) based on the presence of ongoing jet feedback. Within RLAGN, we define high and low excitation radio galaxies (HERGs and LERGs) based on their dominant mode of black hole accretion: torque limited accretion representing feeding from a cold disc, or Bondi representing advection-dominated accretion from a hot medium. Simba predicts good agreement with the observed radio luminosity function (RLF) and its evolution, overall as well as separately for HERGs and LERGs. Quiescent galaxies with AGN-dominated radio flux dominate the RLF at |$\gtrsim 10^{22-23}$|  W Hz−1, while star formation dominates at lower radio powers. Overall, RLAGNs have higher black hole accretion rates and lower star formation rates than non-RLAGN at a given stellar mass or velocity dispersion, but have similar black hole masses. Simba predicts an LERG number density of 8.53 Mpc−3, ∼10× higher than for HERGs, broadly as observed. While LERGs dominate among most massive galaxies with the largest black holes and HERGs dominate at high specific star formation rates, they otherwise largely populate similar-sized dark matter haloes and have similar host galaxy properties. Simba thus predicts that deeper radio surveys will reveal an increasing overlap between the host galaxy demographics of HERGs and LERGs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a revised measurement of the optical extragalactic background light (EBL), based on the contribution of resolved galaxies to the integrated galaxy light (IGL). The cosmic optical background radiation (COB), encodes the light generated by star formation, and provides a wealth of information about the cosmic star formation history (CSFH). We combine wide and deep galaxy number counts from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA) and Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS), along with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive and other deep survey data sets, in nine multiwavelength filters to measure the COB in the range from 0.35   μ m to 2.2   μ m. We derive the luminosity density in each band independently and show good agreement with recent and complementary estimates of the optical-EBL from very high-energy (VHE) experiments. Our error analysis suggests that the IGL and γ-ray measurements are now fully consistent to within |$\sim 10{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠ , suggesting little need for any additional source of diffuse light beyond the known galaxy population. We use our revised IGL measurements to constrain the CSFH, and place amplitude constraints on a number of recent estimates. As a consistency check, we can now demonstrate convincingly, that the CSFH, stellar mass growth, and the optical-EBL provide a fully consistent picture of galaxy evolution. We conclude that the peak of star formation rate lies in the range 0.066–0.076 M⊙ yr−1 Mpc−3 at a lookback time of 9.1 to 10.9 Gyr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Galaxy clusters have long been theorized to quench the star formation of their members. This study uses integral-field unit observations from the K -band MultiObject Spectrograph (KMOS) – Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) survey (K-CLASH) to search for evidence of quenching in massive galaxy clusters at redshifts 0.3 < z < 0.6. We first construct mass-matched samples of exclusively star-forming cluster and field galaxies, then investigate the spatial extent of their H α emission and study their interstellar medium conditions using emission line ratios. The average ratio of H α half-light radius to optical half-light radius (⁠|$r_{\mathrm{e}, {\rm {H}\,\alpha }}/r_{\mathrm{e}, R_{\mathrm{c} } }$|⁠) for all galaxies is 1.14 ± 0.06, showing that star formation is taking place throughout stellar discs at these redshifts. However, on average, cluster galaxies have a smaller |$r_{\mathrm{e}, {\rm {H}\alpha }}/r_{\mathrm{e}, R_{\mathrm{c} } }$| ratio than field galaxies: 〈 |$r_{\mathrm{e}, {\rm {H}\alpha }}/r_{\mathrm{e}, R_{\mathrm{c} } }$| 〉 = 0.96 ± 0.09 compared to 1.22 ± 0.08 (smaller at a 98 per cent credibility level). These values are uncorrected for the wavelength difference between H α emission and R c-band stellar light but implementing such a correction only reinforces our results. We also show that whilst the cluster and field samples follow indistinguishable mass–metallicity (MZ) relations, the residuals around the MZ relation of cluster members correlate with cluster-centric distance; galaxies residing closer to the cluster centre tend to have enhanced metallicities (significant at the 2.6σ level). Finally, in contrast to previous studies, we find no significant differences in electron number density between the cluster and field galaxies. We use simple chemical evolution models to conclude that the effects of disc strangulation and ram-pressure stripping can quantitatively explain our observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the KMOS-CLASH (K-CLASH) survey, a K -band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) survey, of the spatially resolved gas properties and kinematics of 191 (pre-dominantly blue) H α-detected galaxies at 0.2 ≲ z ≲ 0.6 in field and cluster environments. K-CLASH targets galaxies in four Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) fields in the KMOS IZ -band, over 7 arcmin radius (≈2–3 Mpc) fields of view. K-CLASH aims to study the transition of star-forming galaxies from turbulent, highly star-forming disc-like and peculiar systems at z ≈ 1–3, to the comparatively quiescent, ordered late-type galaxies at z ≈ 0, and to examine the role of clusters in the build-up of the red sequence since z ≈ 1. In this paper, we describe the K-CLASH survey, present the sample, and provide an overview of the K-CLASH galaxy properties. We demonstrate that our sample comprises star-forming galaxies typical of their stellar masses and epochs, residing both in field and cluster environments. We conclude K-CLASH provides an ideal sample to bridge the gap between existing large integral-field spectroscopy surveys at higher and lower redshifts. We find that star-forming K-CLASH cluster galaxies at intermediate redshifts have systematically lower stellar masses than their star-forming counterparts in the field, hinting at possible 'downsizing' scenarios of galaxy growth in clusters at these epochs. We measure no difference between the star formation rates of H α-detected, star-forming galaxies in either environment after accounting for stellar mass, suggesting that cluster quenching occurs very rapidly during the epochs probed by K-CLASH, or that star-forming K-CLASH galaxies in clusters have only recently arrived there, with insufficient time elapsed for quenching to have occurred. We present the radio luminosity function (RLF) of optically selected quasars below 1 mJy, constructed by applying a Bayesian-fitting stacking technique to objects well below the nominal radio flux density limit. We test the technique using simulated data, confirming that we can reconstruct the RLF over three orders of magnitude below the typical 5σ detection threshold. We apply our method to 1.4-GHz flux densities from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) survey, extracted at the positions of optical quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey over seven redshift bins up to z  = 2.15, and measure the RLF down to two orders of magnitude below the FIRST detection threshold. In the lowest redshift bin (0.2 < z < 0.45), we find that our measured RLF agrees well with deeper data from the literature. The RLF for the radio-loud quasars flattens below |$\log _{10}[L_{1.4}/{\rm W\, Hz}^{-1}] \approx 25.5$| and becomes steeper again below |$\log _{10}[L_{1.4}/{\rm W\, Hz}^{-1}] \approx 24.8$|⁠ , where radio-quiet quasars start to emerge. The radio luminosity where radio-quiet quasars emerge coincides with the luminosity where star-forming galaxies are expected to start dominating the radio source counts. This implies that there could be a significant contribution from star formation in the host galaxies, but additional data are required to investigate this further. Radio observations allow us to identify a wide range of active galactic nuclei (AGN), which play a significant role in the evolution of galaxies. Amongst AGN at low radio-luminosities is the 'radio-quiet' quasar (RQQ) population, but how they contribute to the total radio emission is under debate, with previous studies arguing that it is predominantly through star formation. In this talk, SVW summarised the results of recent papers on RQQs, including the use of far-infrared data to disentangle the radio emission from the AGN and that from star formation. This provides evidence that black-hole accretion, instead, dominates the radio emission in RQQs. In addition, we find that this accretion-related emission is correlated with the optical luminosity of the quasar, whilst a weaker luminosity-dependence is evident for the radio emission connected with star formation. What remains unclear is the process by which this accretion-related emission is produced. Understanding this for RQQs will then allow us to investigate how this type of AGN influences its surroundings. Such studies have important implications for modelling AGN feedback, and for determining the accretion and star-formation histories of the Universe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examine the co-evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes in the simba cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. simba grows black holes via gravitational torque-limited accretion from cold gas and Bondi accretion from hot gas, while feedback from black holes is modelled in radiative and jet modes depending on the Eddington ratio (f Edd). simba shows generally good agreement with local studies of black hole properties, such as the black hole mass–stellar velocity dispersion (M BH–σ) relation, the black hole accretion rate versus star formation rate (BHAR–SFR), and the black hole mass function. M BH–σ evolves such that galaxies at a given M BH have higher σ at higher redshift, consistent with no evolution in M BH– M ⋆. For |$M_{\rm BH}\lesssim 10^8\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠ , f Edd is anticorrelated with M BH since the BHAR is approximately independent of M BH, while at higher masses f Edd– M BH flattens and has a larger scatter. BHAR versus SFR is invariant with redshift, but f Edd drops steadily with time at a given M BH, such that all but the most massive black holes are accreting in a radiatively efficient mode at |$z\gtrsim 2$|⁠. The black hole mass function amplitude decreases with redshift and is locally dominated by quiescent galaxies for M BH > 108 M⊙, but for |$z\gtrsim 1$| star-forming galaxies dominate at all M BH. The z  = 0 f Edd distribution is roughly lognormal with a peak at |$f_{\rm Edd}\lesssim 0.01$| as observed, shifting to higher f Edd at higher redshifts. Finally, we study the dependence of black hole properties with H  i content and find that the correlation between gas content and SFR is modulated by black hole properties, such that higher SFR galaxies at a given gas content have smaller black holes with higher f Edd. The Herschel Space Observatory has revealed a very different galaxyscape from that shown by optical surveys which presents a challenge for galaxy-evolution models. The Herschel surveys reveal (1) that there was rapid galaxy evolution in the very recent past and (2) that galaxies lie on a single Galaxy Sequence (GS) rather than a star-forming 'main sequence' and a separate region of 'passive' or 'red-and-dead' galaxies. The form of the GS is now clearer because far-infrared surveys such as the Herschel ATLAS pick up a population of optically red starforming galaxies that would have been classified as passive using most optical criteria. The space-density of this population is at least as high as the traditional star-forming population. By stacking spectra of H-ATLAS galaxies over the redshift range 0.001 < z < 0.4, we show that the galaxies responsible for the rapid low-redshift evolution have high stellar masses, high star-formation rates but, even several billion years in the past, old stellar populations - they are thus likely to be relatively recent ancestors of early-type galaxies in the Universe today. The form of the GS is inconsistent with rapid quenching models and neither the analytic bathtub model nor the hydrodynamical EAGLE simulation can reproduce the rapid cosmic evolution. We propose a new gentler model of galaxy evolution that can explain the new Herschel results and other key properties of the galaxy population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Foreground contamination is one of the most important limiting factors in detecting the neutral hydrogen in the epoch of reionisation. These foregrounds can be roughly split into galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. In these proceedings we highlight information that can be gleaned from multi-wavelength extragalactic surveys in order to overcome this issue. We discuss how clustering information from the lower-redshift, foreground galaxies, can be used as additional information in accounting for the noise associated with the foregrounds. We then go on to highlight the expected contribution of future optical and near-infrared surveys for detecting the galaxies responsible for ionising the Universe. We suggest that these galaxies can also be used to reduce the systematics in the 21-cm epoch of reionisation signal through cross-correlations if enough common area is surveyed. In order to understand the role of radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) in galaxy evolution, we must determine the relative levels of accretion and star-formation activity within these objects. Previous work at low radio flux densities has shown that accretion makes a significant contribution to the total radio emission, in contrast with other quasar studies that suggest star formation dominates. To investigate, we use 70 RQQs from the Spitzer-Herschel Active Galaxy Survey. These quasars are all at z~1, thereby minimizing evolutionary effects, and have been selected to span a factor of ~100 in optical luminosity, so that the luminosity dependence of their properties can be studied. We have imaged the sample using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA), whose high sensitivity results in 35 RQQs being detected above 2σ. This radio data set is combined with far-infrared luminosities derived from grey-body fitting to Herschel photometry. By exploiting the far-infrared-radio correlation observed for star-forming galaxies, and comparing two independent estimates of the star-formation rate, we show that star formation alone is not sufficient to explain the total radio emission. Considering RQQs above a 2σ detection level in both the radio and the far-infrared, 92 per cent are accretion dominated,and the accretion process accounts for 80 per cent of the radio luminosity when summed across the objects. The radio emission connected with accretion appears to be correlated with the optical luminosity of the RQQ, whilst a weaker luminosity dependence is evident for the radio emission connected with star formation. The KMOS Redshift One Spectroscopic Survey (KROSS) is an ESO-guaranteed time survey of 795 typical star-forming galaxies in the redshift range z = 0.8-1.0 with the KMOS instrument on the Very Large Telescope. In this paper, we present resolved kinematics and star formation rates for 584 z ~ 1 galaxies. This constitutes the largest near-infrared Integral Field Unit survey of galaxies at z ~ 1 to date. We demonstrate the success of our selection criteria with 90 per cent of our targets found to be H α emitters, of which 81 per cent are spatially resolved. The fraction of the resolved KROSS sample with dynamics dominated by ordered rotation is found to be 83 ± 5 per cent. However, when compared with local samples these are turbulent discs with high gas to baryonic mass fractions, ~35 per cent, and the majority are consistent with being marginally unstable (Toomre Q ~ 1). There is no strong correlation between galaxy averaged velocity dispersion and the total star formation rate, suggesting that feedback from star formation is not the origin of the elevated turbulence. We postulate that it is the ubiquity of high (likely molecular) gas fractions and the associated gravitational instabilities that drive the elevated star formation rates in these typical z ~ 1 galaxies, leading to the 10-fold enhanced star formation rate density. Finally, by comparing the gas masses obtained from inverting the star formation law with the dynamical and stellar masses, we infer an average dark matter to total mass fraction within 2.2re (9.5 kpc) of 65 ± 12 per cent, in agreement with the results from hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation. We investigate the star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass, M*, relation of a star-forming (SF) galaxy (SFG) sample in the XMM-LSS field to z ~ 3.0 using the near-infrared data from the VISTA Deep Extragalactic Observations (VIDEO) survey. Combining VIDEO with broad-band photometry, we use the SED fitting algorithm cigale to derive SFRs and M* and have adapted it to account for the full photometric redshift probability-distribution-function uncertainty. Applying an SF selection using the D4000 index, we find evidence for strong evolution in the normalization of the SFR-M* relation out to z ~ 3 and a roughly constant slope of (SFR $\propto M_*{\alpha }$) a = 0.69 ± 0.02 to z ~ 1.7. We find this increases close to unity towards z ~ 2.65. Alternatively, if we apply a colour selection, we find a distinct turnover in the SFR-M* relation between 0.7 ≲ z ≲ 2.0 at the high-mass end, and suggest that this is due to an increased contamination from passive galaxies. We find evolution of the specific SFR (1 + z)2.60 at log10(M*/M) ~ 10.5, out to z ≲ 2.4 with an observed flattening beyond z ~ 2 with increased stellar mass. Comparing to a range of simulations we find the analytical scaling relation approaches, that invoke an equilibrium model, a good fit to our data, suggesting that a continual smooth accretion regulated by continual outflows may be a key driver in the overall growth of SFGs. Measuring radio source counts is critical for characterizing new extragalactic populations, brings a wealth of science within reach and will inform forecasts for SKA and its pathfinders. Yet there is currently great debate (and few measurements) about the behaviour of the 1.4-GHz counts in the µJy regime. One way to push the counts to these levels is via 'stacking', the covariance of a map with a catalogue at higher resolution and (often) a different wavelength. For the first time, we cast stacking in a fully Bayesian framework, applying it to (i) the Square Kilometre Array Design Study (SKADS) simulation and (ii) Very Large Array (VLA) data stacked at the positions of sources from the VISTA Infra-red Deep Extragalactic Observations (VIDEO) survey. In the former case, the algorithm recovers the counts correctly when applied to the catalogue, but is biased high when confusion comes into play. This needs to be accounted for in the analysis of data from any relatively low-resolution Square Kilometre Array (SKA) pathfinders. For the latter case, the observed radio source counts remain flat below the 5-σ level of 85 μJy as far as 40 μJy, then fall off earlier than the flux hinted at by the SKADS simulations and a recent P(D) analysis (which is the only other measurement from the literature at these flux-density levels, itself extrapolated in frequency). Division into galaxy type via spectral-energy distribution reveals that normal spiral galaxies dominate the counts at these fluxes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the interplay between black-hole accretion and star formation, and how to disentangle the two, is crucial to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. To investigate, we use a combination of optical and near-infrared photometry to select a sample of 74 quasars from the VISTA Deep Extragalactic Observations (VIDEO) survey, over 1 deg². The depth of VIDEO allows us to study very low accretion rates and/or lower-mass black holes, and 26 per cent of the candidate quasar sample has been spectroscopically confirmed. We use a radio-stacking technique to sample below the nominal flux-density threshold using data from the Very Large Array at 1.4 GHz and find, in agreement with other work, that a power-law fit to the quasar-related radio source counts is inadequate at low flux density. By comparing with a control sample of galaxies (where we match in terms of stellar mass), and by estimating the star formation rate, we suggest that this radio emission is predominantly caused by accretion activity rather than star-formation activity. Following our previous spectroscopic observations of z > 7 galaxies with Gemini/Gemini Near Infra-Red Spectrograph (GNIRS) and Very Large Telescope (VLT)/XSHOOTER, which targeted a total of eight objects, we present here our results from a deeper and larger VLT/FOcal Reducer and Spectrograph (FORS2) spectroscopic sample of Wide Field Camera 3 selected z > 7 candidate galaxies. With our FORS2 setup we cover the 737–1070 nm wavelength range, enabling a search for Lyman α in the redshift range spanning 5.06–7.80. We target 22 z-band dropouts and find no evidence of Lyman α emission, with the exception of a tentative detection (<5σ, which is our adopted criterion for a secure detection) for one object. The upper limits on Lyman α flux and the broad-band magnitudes are used to constrain the rest-frame equivalent widths for this line emission. We analyse our FORS2 observations in combination with our previous GNIRS and XSHOOTER observations, and suggest that a simple model where the fraction of high rest-frame equivalent width emitters follows the trend seen at z = 3-6.5 is inconsistent with our non-detections at z ∼ 7.8 at the 96 per cent confidence level. This may indicate that a significant neutral H i fraction in the intergalactic medium suppresses Lyman α, with an estimated neutral fraction $\chi _{\rm H\,\small {I}}\sim 0.5$, in agreement with other estimates. The recent Hubble Space Telescope near-infrared imaging with the Wide-Field Camera #3 (WFC 3) of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey South (GOODS-S) field in the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) programme covering nearly 100 arcmin2, along with already existing Advanced Camera for Surveys optical data, makes possible the search for bright galaxy candidates at redshift z ≈ 7–9 using the Lyman break technique. We present the first analysis of z′-drop z ≈ 7 candidate galaxies in this area, finding 19 objects. We also analyse Y-drops at z ≈ 8, trebling the number of bright (HAB < 27 mag) Y-drops from our previous work, and compare our results with those of other groups based on the same data. The bright high-redshift galaxy candidates we find serve to better constrain the bright end of the luminosity function at those redshift, and may also be more amenable to spectroscopic confirmation than the fainter ones presented in various previous work on the smaller fields (the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and the WFC 3 Early Release Science observations). We also look at the agreement with previous luminosity functions derived from WFC 3 drop-out counts, finding a generally good agreement, except for the luminosity function of Yan et al. at z ≈ 8, which is strongly ruled out. ABSTRACT We present Gemini/Gemini Near Infrared Spectrograph (GNIRS) spectroscopic observations of four z-band ( z ≈ 7) dropout galaxies and Very Large Telescope (VLT)/XSHOOTER observations of one z-band dropout and three Y-band ( z ≈ 8-9) dropout galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, which were selected with Wide Field Camera 3 imaging on the Hubble Space Telescope. We find no evidence of Lyman α emission with a typical 5σ sensitivity of 5 × 10−18 erg cm−2 s−1, and use the upper limits on Lyman α flux and the broad-band magnitudes to constrain the rest-frame equivalent widths for this line emission. Accounting for incomplete spectral coverage, we survey 3.0 z-band dropouts and 2.9 Y-band dropouts to a Lyman α rest-frame equivalent width limit >120 Å (for an unresolved emission line); for an equivalent width limit of 50 Å the effective numbers of drop-outs surveyed fall to 1.2 z-band drop-outs and 1.5 Y-band drop-outs. A simple model where the fraction of high rest-frame equivalent width emitters follows the trend seen at z = 3-6.5 is inconsistent with our non-detections at z = 7-9 at the ≈1σ level for spectrally unresolved lines, which may indicate that a significant neutral H i fraction in the intergalactic medium suppresses the Lyman α line in z-drop and Y-drop galaxies at z > 7. Infrared-faint radio sources (IFRSs) are a rare class of objects which are relatively bright at radio wavelengths but very faint at infrared and optical wavelengths. Here we present sensitive near-infrared observations of a sample of these sources taken as part of the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey. Nearly all the IFRSs are undetected at a level of ~1 µJy in these new deep observations, and even the detections are consistent with confusion with unrelated galaxies. A stacked image implies that the median flux density is S3.6 µm ~ 0.2 µJy or less, giving extreme values of the radio-infrared flux density ratio. Comparison of these objects with known classes of object suggests that the majority are probably high-redshift radio-loud galaxies, possibly suffering from significant dust extinction. This paper presents a study of the environments of SDSS quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) in the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (SERVS). We concentrate on the high-redshift QSOs as these have not been studied in large numbers with data of this depth before. We use the IRAC 3.6-4.5 μm color of objects and ancillary r-band data to filter out as much foreground contamination as possible. This technique allows us to find a significant (>4σ) overdensity of galaxies around QSOs in a redshift bin centered on z ~ 2.0 and an (>2σ) overdensity of galaxies around QSOs in a redshift bin centered on z ~ 3.3. We compare our findings to the predictions of a semi-analytic galaxy formation model, based on the ΛCDM MILLENNIUM simulation, and find for both redshift bins that the model predictions match well the source density we have measured from the SERVS data. We use data from the Herschel-ATLAS to investigate the evolution of the far-infrared-radio correlation over the redshift range . Using the total far-infrared luminosity of all sources in the Herschel-ATLAS Science Demonstration Field and cross-matching these data with radio data from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimetres (FIRST) survey and the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA) Northern Sky Survey (NVSS), we obtain 104 radio counterparts to the Herschel sources. With these data we find no evidence for evolution in the far-infrared-radio correlation over the redshift range , where the median value for the ratio between far-infrared and radio luminosity, q, over this range is (and a mean of accounting for the lower limits), consistent with both the local value determined from IRAS and values derived from surveys targeting the high-redshift Universe. By comparing the radio fluxes of our sample measured from both FIRST and NVSS we show that previous results suggesting an increase in the value of q from high to low redshift may be the result of resolving out extended emission of the low-redshift sources with relatively high-resolution interferometric data, although contamination from active galactic nuclei could still play a significant role. We also find tentative evidence that the longer wavelength cooler dust is heated by an evolved stellar population which does not trace the star formation rate as closely as the shorter wavelength m emission or the radio emission, supporting suggestions based on detailed models of individual galaxies. We present submillimetre (submm) and mid-infrared (MIR) imaging observations of five fields centred on quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) at . All five QSOs were detected previously at submm wavelengths. At 850 (450) m, we detect 17 (11) submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) in addition to the QSOs. The total area mapped at 850 m is arcmin2 down to rms noise levels of 1–2 mJy beam−1, depending on the field. Integral number counts are computed from the 850- m data using the same analytical techniques adopted by ‘blank-field’ submm surveys. We find that the ‘QSO-field’ counts show a clear excess over the blank-field counts at deboosted flux densities of mJy; at higher flux densities, the counts are consistent with the blank-field counts. Robust MIR counterparts are identified for all four submm detected QSOs and per cent of the SMGs. The MIR colours of the QSOs are similar to those of the local ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG)/active galactic nuclei (AGN) Mrk 231 if placed at whilst most of the SMGs have colours very similar to those of the local ULIRG Arp 220 at . MIR diagnostics therefore find no strong evidence that the SMGs host buried AGN although we cannot rule out such a possibility. Taken together our results suggest that the QSOs sit in regions of the early universe which are undergoing an enhanced level of major star formation activity, and should evolve to become similarly dense regions containing massive galaxies at the present epoch. Finally, we find evidence that the level of star formation activity in individual galaxies appears to be lower around the QSOs than it is around more powerful radio-loud AGN at higher redshifts. We present the results of our search for high-redshift Lyman-break galaxies over the GOODS-South field. We use Hubble Space Telescope (HST)-ACS data in & z′, Very Large Telescope (VLT)-ISAAC J and Ks, Spitzer–Infrared Array Camera ( IRAC) 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 μm data in conjunction with the new HAWK-I Y-band science verification data to search for dropout galaxies in the redshift range . We survey ≈119 arcmin2 to ), of which 37.5 arcmin2 reaches . Candidate z′ and Y dropouts were selected on the basis of a colour cut of mag and mag, respectively. We find no robust Y-drops ( z≈ 9) brighter than . In our search for z′-band dropouts , we identify four possible candidates, two with z′-drop colours and clear Spitzer– IRAC detections and two less likely candidates. We also identify two previously known Galactic T-dwarf stellar contaminants with these colours, and two likely transient objects seen in the Y-band data. The implications if all or none of our candidates is real on the ultraviolet galaxy luminosity functions at are explored. We find our number of z′-drop candidates to be insufficient based on the expected number of z′ drops in a simple no-evolution scenario from the Lyman-break galaxy luminosity function but we are consistent with the observed luminosity function at (if all our candidates are real). However, if one or both of our best z′-drop candidates are not galaxies, this would demand evolution of the luminosity function at early epochs, in the sense that the number density of ultraviolet luminous star-forming galaxies at is less than at . We show that the future surveys to be conducted with the European Southern Observatory VISTA telescope over the next 5 yr will be able to measure the bulk of the luminosity function for both z′ and Y dropouts and thus provide the strongest constraints on the level of star-formation within the epoch of reionization. We analyse recently acquired near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS)-South field to search for star-forming galaxies at . By comparing Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) m Y-band images with Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) z-band ( m) images, we identify objects with colours consistent with Lyman-break galaxies at . This new data cover an area five times larger than that previously reported in the WFC3 imaging of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and affords a valuable constraint on the bright end of the luminosity function. Using additional imaging of the region in the ACS B, V and i bands from GOODS v2.0 and the WFC band, we attempt to remove any low-redshift interlopers. Our selection criteria yields six candidates brighter than , of which all except one are detected in the ACS z-band imaging and are thus unlikely to be transients. Assuming all six candidates are at this implies a surface density of objects brighter than of , a value significantly smaller than the prediction from luminosity function. This suggests continued evolution of the bright end of the luminosity function between and 7, with number densities lower at higher redshift. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use the 6C** sample to investigate the comoving space density of powerful, steep-spectrum radio sources. This sample, consisting of 68 objects, has virtually complete K-band photometry and spectroscopic redshifts for 32 per cent of the sources. In order to find its complete redshift distribution, we develop a method of redshift estimation based on the K– z diagram of the 3CRR, 6CE, 6C* and 7CRS radio galaxies. Based on this method, we derive redshift probability density functions for all the optically identified sources in the 6C** sample. Using a combination of spectroscopic and estimated redshifts, we select the most radio luminous sources in the sample. Their redshift distribution is then compared with the predictions of the radio luminosity function of Jarvis et al. We find that, within the uncertainties associated with the estimation method, the data are consistent with a constant comoving space density of steep-spectrum radio sources beyond z≳ 2.5, and rule out a steep decline. We present basic observational data on the 6C** sample. This is a new sample of radio sources drawn from the 151-MHz 6C survey, which was filtered with radio criteria chosen to optimize the chances of finding radio galaxies at . The filtering criteria are a steep-spectral index and a small angular size. The final sample consists of 68 sources from a region of sky covering 0.421 sr. We present Very Large Array radio maps, and the results of K-band imaging and optical spectroscopy. Near-infrared counterparts are identified for 66 of the 68 sources, down to a 3σ limiting magnitude of K∼ 22 mag in a 3-arcsec aperture. Eight of these identifications are spatially compact, implying an unresolved nuclear source. The K-magnitude distribution peaks at a median K≈ 18.7 mag, and is found to be statistically indistinguishable from that of the similarly selected 6C* sample, implying that the redshift distribution could extend to z≳ 4. Redshifts determined from spectroscopy are available for 22 (32 per cent) of the sources, over the range of 0.2 ≲ z≲ 3.3. We measure 15 of these, whereas the other seven were previously known. Six sources are at . Four sources show broad emission lines in their spectra and are classified as quasars. Three of these show also an unresolved K-band identification. 11 sources fail to show any distinctive emission and/or absorption features in their spectra. We suggest that these could be (i) in the so-called ‘redshift desert’ region of or (ii) at a greater redshift, but feature weak emission-line spectra. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we present near-infraredK-band imaging of a sample of ultra-steep-spectrum (USS) radio sources selected at 74 MHz. The dual selection criteria of low frequency and USS mean that we should be sensitive to the highest-redshift (z>5) radio galaxies. We have obtainedK-band magnitudes for all of the objects in our sample of 26 and discuss the properties of each.There is a pronounced bias in this sample towards fainter magnitudes and thus higher redshifts when compared to complete unfiltered samples such as the 7CRS of Willott et al., implying that the steep-spectrum technique is still viable at 74 MHz. However, there are more bright (K<17) sources in the 74-MHz sample than in a similar sample selected at 151 MHz, namely 6C*. This is principally due to the additional selection criterion of a small angular size for the radio sources in 6C*; four of the six sources in the 74-MHz USS sample withK<17 have angular sizes>15 arcsec (the angular size cut-off of 6C*).We find that the distribution ofK-band magnitudes from a sample selected at 74 MHz is statistically indistinguishable from the 6C* sample, when similar angular size filtering is applied to the 74-MHz sample. In this paper, the third and final of a series, we present complete K-band imaging and some complementary I-band imaging of the filtered 6C* sample. We find no systematic differences between the K–z relation of 6C* radio galaxies and those from complete samples, so the near-infrared properties of luminous radio galaxies are not obviously biased by the additional 6C* radio selection criteria (steep spectral index and small angular size). The 6C*K–z data significantly improve delineation of the K–z relation for radio galaxies at high redshift (z>2). Accounting for non-stellar contamination, and for correlations between radio luminosity and stellar mass, we find little support for previous claims that the underlying scatter in the stellar luminosity of radio galaxies increases significantly at z>2. In a particular spatially flat universe with a cosmological constant (Ω[sub M]=0.3 and Ω[sub Λ]=0.7), the most luminous radio sources appear to be associated with galaxies with a luminosity distribution with a high mean (≈5 L*), and a low dispersion (σ∼0.5 mag) which formed their stars at epochs corresponding to z&gsim;2.5. This result is in line with recent submillimetre studies of high-redshift radio galaxies and the inferred ages of extremely red objects from faint radio samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
