Aims. We study the X-ray power spectrum of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in order to investigate whether Seyfert I and II power spectra are similar or not and whether AGN variability depends on the mass and accretion rate of black holes as well as to compare the power spectra of AGN with the power spectra of Galactic X-ray black hole binaries. Method. We used 14–195 keV band light curves from the 157-month Swift/BAT hard X-ray survey, and we computed the mean power spectrum and excess variance of AGN in narrow black hole mass and AGN luminosity bins. We fitted a power-law model to the AGN power spectra, and we investigated whether the power spectrum parameters and the excess variance depend on the black hole mass, luminosity, and accretion rate of AGN. Results. We found the Seyfert I and Seyfert II power spectra to be identical, in agreement with AGN unification models. The mean AGN X-ray power spectrum has the same power-law like shape, with a slope of −1 in all AGN irrespective of their luminosity and black hole mass. We did not detect any flattening to a slope of zero at frequencies as low as 10−9 Hz. We detected an anti-correlation between the power spectral density function (PSD) amplitude and the accretion rate, similar to what has been seen in the past in the 2–10 keV band. This implies that the variability amplitude in AGN decreases with an increasing accretion rate. The universal AGN power spectrum is consistent with the mean 2–9 keV band Cyg X-1 power spectrum in its soft state. We detected a small difference in amplitude, but this is probably due to the difference in energy. Conclusions. The mean low-frequency AGN X-ray power spectrum is consistent with the extension of the mean 0.01–25 Hz Cyg X-1 power spectrum in its soft state to lower frequencies. We cannot prove that the mean AGN PSD is analogous to the mean Cyg X-1 PSD in its soft state, as we do not know the location of the high-frequency break in the hard X-ray AGN PSDs. However, if this is the case, then the accretion disc in AGN probably extends to the radius of the innermost circular stable orbit (as is probably the case with the black hole binaries in their soft state). The X-ray corona will then be located on top, illuminating the disc and producing the X-ray reflection and disc reverberation phenomena commonly observed in these objects. Furthermore, the agreement between the PSD amplitude in AGN and the Cyg X-1 (either in the soft or the hard state) over many decades in frequency indicates that the X-ray variability process is probably the same in all accreting objects, irrespective of the mass of the compact object. We present a study of outburst activity in the BL Lacertae source OJ 287, which has been observed extensively with the X-ray telescope (XRT) on board the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. We demonstrate that the results of our analysis of X-ray flaring activity using the Swift/XRT data allow for the key characteristics of the OJ 287 secondary to be refined (its nature and mass). We discover that the energy spectra in all spectral states can be fitted using the XSPEC bulk motion Comptonization (BMC) model. As a result we find that the X-ray photon index of the BMC model, Γ, correlates with the mass accretion rate, Ṁ. We establish that Γ increases monotonically with Ṁ from the low-hard state, Γ ∼ 1.5, to the high-soft state, Γ ∼ 2.8, and finally saturates. The index behavior is similar to that in a number of black hole (BH) candidates in which we show that its saturation is observational evidence of the presence of a BH. Based on this correlation, we applied a scaling method and determine that a secondary BH mass in OJ 287 is about ∼1.25 × 108 solar masses, using the well-studied X-ray BH binaries XTE 1550–564, H 1743–322, 4U 1630–47, and GRS 1915+105 as well as extragalactic BHs ESO 243–49 and M101 ULX–1, as reference sources. Also, using the power spectrum analysis, we infer the size of the Compton cloud LCC ∼ 1013 cm where X-ray spectra were formed. Using this value of LCC, we confirm that a BH mass of the secondary in OJ 287 was on the order of 108 solar masses as we derived using the index, Γ–correlation (the scaling method) with respect of the mass accretion rate. In an effort to understand the cause of the apparent depletion in the number density of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z > 3, this work investigates the viability of the so-called cosmic microwave background (CMB) quenching mechanism of intrinsically jetted, high-z AGNs, whereby inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons off electrons within the extended lobes results in a substantial dimming of the lobe synchrotron emission at GHz frequencies, while simultaneously boosting their diffuse X-ray signal. We focus on five z > 3.5 radio galaxies that have sufficiently deep Chandra exposure (>50 ks) to warrant a meaningful investigation of any extended X-ray emission. For those objects with evidence for statistically significant extended X-ray lobes (4C 41.17 and 4C 03.24), we combine the Chandra measurements with literature data at lower frequencies to assemble the systems' spectral energy distributions (SEDs), and utilize state-of-the-art SED modelling - including emission from the disc, torus, jet, hotspots and lobes - to infer their physical parameters. For both radio galaxies, the magnetic energy density in the hotspots is found to exceed the energy density in CMB photons, whereas the opposite is true for the lobes. This implies that any extended synchrotron emission likely originates from the hotspots themselves, rather than the lobes. Conversely, inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons dominates the extended X-ray emission from the lobes, which are effectively 'radio-quenched'. As a result, CMB quenching is effective in these systems in spite of the fact that the observed X-ray to radio luminosity ratio does not bear the signature (1 + z)4 dependence of the CMB energy density. 1H 0707-495 is the most convincing example of a supermassive black hole with an X-ray spectrum being dominated by extremely smeared, relativistic reflection, with the additional requirement of strongly supersolar iron abundance. However, here we show that the iron features in its 2-10 keV spectrum are rather similar to the archetypal wind dominated source, PDS 456. We fit all the 2-10 keV spectra from 1H 0707-495 using the same wind model as used for PDS 456, but viewed at higher inclination so that the iron absorption line is broader but not so blueshifted. This gives a good overall fit to the data from 1H 0707-495, and an extrapolation of this model to higher energies also gives a good match to the NuSTAR data. Small remaining residuals indicate that the iron line emission is stronger than in PDS 456. This is consistent with the wider angle wind expected from a continuum-driven wind from the super-Eddington mass accretion rate in 1H 0707-495, and/or the presence of residual reflection from the underlying disc though the presence of the absorption line in the model removes the requirement for highly relativistic smearing, and highly supersolar iron abundance. We suggest that the spectrum of 1H 0707-495 is sculpted more by absorption in a wind than by extreme relativistic effects in strong gravity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the multi-wavelength identification of the X-ray sources found in the Subaru-XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) using deep imaging data covering the wavelength range between the far-UV and mid-IR (MIR). We select a primary counterpart of each X-ray source by applying the likelihood ratio method to R-band, 3.6μm, near- UV, and 24μm source catalogs as well as matching catalogs of active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidates selected in 1.4 GHz radio and i'-band variability surveys. Once candidates for Galactic stars, ultra-luminous X-ray sources in a nearby galaxy, and clusters of galaxies are removed there are 896 AGN candidates in the sample. We conduct spectroscopic observations of the primary counterparts with multi-object spectrographs in the optical and NIR; 65% of the X-ray AGN candidates are spectroscopically identified. For the remaining X-ray AGN candidates, we evaluate their photometric redshift with photometric data in 15 bands. Utilizing the multi-wavelength photometric data of the large sample of X-ray-selected AGNs, we evaluate the stellar masses, M*, of the host galaxies of the narrow-line AGNs. The distribution of the stellarmass is remarkably constant from z=0.1 to 4.0. The relation between M* and 2-10 keV luminosity can be explained with strong cosmological evolution of the relationship between the black hole mass and M*. We also evaluate the scatter of the UV-MIR spectral energy distribution (SED) of the X-ray AGNs as a function of X-ray luminosity and absorption by the nucleus. The scatter is compared with galaxies which have redshift and stellarmass distributionmatched with the X-ray AGN. The UV-NIR (near-IR) SEDs of obscured X-ray AGNs are similar to those of the galaxies in the matched sample. In the NIR-MIR range, the median SEDs of X-ray AGNs are redder, but the scatter of the SEDs of the X-ray AGN broadly overlaps that of the galaxies in the matched sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A multi-epoch, multi-instrument analysis of the Seyfert 1 galaxy HE 0436-4717 is conducted using optical to X-ray data from XMM-Newton and Swift (including the Burst Alert Telescope). Fitting of the UV-to-X-ray spectral energy distribution shows little evidence of extinction and the X-ray spectral analysis does not confirm previous reports of deep absorption edges from O VIII. HE 0436-4717 is a 'bare' Seyfert with negligible line-of-sight absorption making it ideal to study the central X-ray emitting region. Three scenarios were considered to describe the X-ray data: partial covering absorption, blurred reflection, and soft Comptonization. All three interpretations describe the 0.5-10.0 keV spectra well. Extrapolating the models to 100 keV results in poorer fits for the partial covering model. When also considering the rapid variability during one of the XMM-Newton observations, the blurred reflection model appears to describe all the observations in the most self-consistent manner. If adopted, the blurred reflection model requires a very low iron abundance in HE 0436-4717. We consider the possibilities that this is an artefact of the fitting process, but it appears possible that it is intrinsic to the object. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the past five years, a flurry of X-ray reverberation lag measurements of accreting supermassive black holes have been made using the XMM–Newton telescope in the 0.3–10 keV energy range. In this work, we use the NuSTAR (Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array) telescope to extend the lag analysis up to higher energies for two Seyfert galaxies, SWIFT J2127.4+5654 and NGC 1365. X-ray reverberation lags are due to the light travel time delays between the direct continuum emission and the reprocessed emission from the inner radii of an ionized accretion disc. XMM–Newton has been particularly adept at measuring the lag associated with the broad Fe K emission line, where the gravitationally redshifted wing of the line is observed to respond before the line centroid at 6.4 keV, produced at larger radii. Now, we use NuSTAR to probe the lag at higher energies, where the spectrum shows clear evidence for Compton reflection, known as the Compton ‘hump’. The XMM–Newton data show Fe K lags in both SWIFT J2127.4+5654 and NGC 1365. The NuSTAR data provide independent confirmation of these Fe K lags, and also show evidence for the corresponding Compton hump lags, especially in SWIFT J2127.4+5654. These broad-band lag measurements confirm that the Compton hump and Fe K lag are produced at small radii. At low frequencies in NGC 1365, where the spectrum shows evidence for eclipsing clouds in the line of sight, we find a clear negative (not positive) lag from 2 to 10 keV, which can be understood as the decrease in column density from a neutral eclipsing cloud moving out of our line of sight during the observation. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are the most luminous persistent objects in the universe. The X-ray domain is particularly important because the X-ray flux represents a significant fraction of the bolometric emission from such objects and probes the innermost regions of accretion disks, where most of this power is generated. An excess of X-ray emission below ~2 keV, called soft-excess, is very common in Type 1 AGN spectra. The origin of this feature remains debated. Originally modeled with a blackbody, there are now several possibilities to model the soft-excess, including warm Comptonization and blurred ionized reflection. In this paper, we test ionized-reflection models on Mrk 509, a bright Seyfert 1 galaxy for which we have a unique data set, in order to determine whether it can be responsible for the strong soft-excess. We use ten simultaneous XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL observations performed every four days. We present here the results of the spectral analysis, the evolution of the parameters, and the variability properties of the X-ray emission. The application of blurred ionized-reflection models leads to a very strong reflection and an extreme geometry, but fails to reproduce the broad-band spectrum of Mrk 509. Two different scenarios for blurred ionized reflection are discussed: stable geometry and lamp-post configuration. In both cases we find that the model parameters do not follow the expected relations, indicating that the model is fine-tuned to fit the data without physical justification. A large, slow variation in the soft-excess without a counterpart in the hard X-rays could be explained by a change in ionization of the reflector. However, such a change does not naturally follow from the assumed geometrical configuration. Warm Comptonization remains the most probable origin of the soft-excess in this object. Nevertheless, it is possible that both ionized reflection and warm Comptonization mechanisms can explain the soft-excess in all objects, one dominating the other one, depending on the physical conditions of the disk and the corona. We present long-term (months–years) X-ray spectral variability of the Seyfert 1.8 galaxy NGC 1365 as observed by Swift, which provides well-sampled observations over a much longer timescale (six years) and a much larger flux range than is afforded by other observatories. At very low luminosities, the spectrum is very soft, becoming rapidly harder as the luminosity increases and then, above a particular luminosity, softening again. At a given flux level, the scatter in hardness ratio is not very large, meaning that the spectral shape is largely determined by the luminosity. The spectra were therefore summed in luminosity bins and fitted with a variety of models. The best-fitting model consists of two power laws, one unabsorbed and another, more luminous, which is absorbed. In this model, we find a range of intrinsic 0.5–10.0 keV luminosities of approximately 1.1–3.5 erg s−1, and a very large range of absorbing columns, of approximately 1022–1024 cm−2. Interestingly, we find that the absorbing column decreases with increasing luminosity, but that this result is not due to changes in ionization. We suggest that these observations might be interpreted in terms of a wind model in which the launch radius varies as a function of ionizing flux and disc temperature and therefore moves out with increasing accretion rate, i.e. increasing X-ray luminosity. Thus, depending on the inclination angle of the disc relative to the observer, the absorbing column may decrease as the accretion rate goes up. We present the results of the analysis of the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 2 Mrk 348, observed by Suzaku and XMM–Newton. The overall spectrum of Mrk 348 can be described by a primary power-law continuum seen through three layers of absorption, of which one is neutral and two are ionized. Comparing Suzaku (2008) and XMM–Newton (2002) observations we find variability of the X-ray spectral curvature. We suggest that the variability can be explained through the change of column density of both the neutral and one of the ionized absorbers, together with a variation of the ionization level of the same absorber. We thus confirm one of the main features presented in past works, where intrinsic column density variability up to ∼1023 cm−2 was observed on time-scales of months. We also find that the photon index of the underlying power-law continuum (Γ ∼ 1.8) is in agreement with the previous observations of this Seyfert 2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. This programme is aimed at obtaining one of the largest X-ray selected samples of identified active galactic nuclei to date in order to characterise such a population at intermediate fluxes, where most of the Universe's accretion power originates.We present the XMM-NewtonWide Angle Survey (XWAS), a new catalogue of almost a thousand X-ray sources spectroscopically identified through optical observations. Methods. A sample of X-ray sources detected in 68 XMM-Newton pointed observations was selected for optical multi-fibre spectroscopy. Optical counterparts and corresponding photometry of the X-ray sources were obtained from the SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey. Candidates for spectroscopy were initially selected with magnitudes down to R ~ 21, with preference for X-ray sources having a flux F0.5-4.5keV ⩾ 10-14 erg s-1 cm-2. Optical spectroscopic observations were made using the Two Degree Field of the Anglo Australian Telescope, and the resulting spectra were classified based on optical emission lines. Results. We have identified through optical spectroscopy 940 X-ray sources over Ω ~ 11.8 deg2 of the sky. Source populations in our sample can be summarised as 65% broad line active galactic nuclei (BLAGN), 16% narrow emission line galaxies (NELGs), 6% absorption line galaxies (ALGs) and 13% stars. An active nucleus is also likely to be present in the large majority of the X-ray sources spectroscopically classified as NELGs or ALGs. Sources lie in high-galactic latitude (∣b∣ > 20 deg) XMM-Newton fields mainly in the southern hemisphere. Owing to the large parameter space in redshift (0 ⩽ z ⩽ 4.25) and flux (10-15 ⩽ F0.5-4.5keV ⩽ 10-12 erg s-1 cm-2) covered by the XWAS this work provides an excellent resource for the further study of subsamples and particular cases. The overall properties of the extragalactic objects are presented in this paper. These include the redshift and luminosity distributions, optical and X-ray colours and X-ray-to-optical flux ratios. Context. The XMM-Large Scale Structure survey, covering an area of 11.1 sq. deg., contains more than 6000 X-ray point-like sources detected with the XMM-Newton to a flux of 3 × 10-15 erg s-1 cm-2 in the [0.5-2] keV band. The vast majority of these sources have optical (CFHTLS), infrared (SWIRE IRAC and MIPS), near-infrared (UKIDSS), and/or ultraviolet (GALEX) counterparts. Aims. We wish to investigate the environmental properties of the different types of the XMM-LSS X-ray sources by defining their environment using the i'-band CFHTLSW1 catalog of optical galaxies to a magnitude limit of 23.5 mag. Methods. We have classified 4435 X-ray selected sources on the basis of their spectra, SEDs, and X-ray luminosity, and estimated their photometric redshifts, which have a 4-11 band photometry with an accuracy of σΔz/(1+zsp) = 0.076 with 22.6% outliers for i' < 26 mag. We estimated the local overdensities of 777 X-ray sources that have spectro-z or photo-z calculated by using more than seven bands (accuracy of σΔz/(1+zsp) = 0.061 with 13.8% outliers) within the volume-limited region defined by 0.1 ⩽ z ⩽ 0.85 and -23.5 < Mi' < -20. Results. Although X-ray sources may be found in variety of environments, a high fraction (≳55-60%), as verified by comparing with the random expectations, reside in overdense regions. The galaxy overdensities within which X-ray sources reside show a positive recent redshift evolution (at least for the range studied; z ≲ 0.85). We also find that X-ray selected galaxies, when compared to AGN, inhabit significantly higher galaxy overdensities, although their spatial extent appear to be smaller than that of AGN. Hard AGN (HR ⩾ -0.2) are located in more overdense regions than soft AGN (HR < -0.2), which is clearly seen in both redshift ranges, although it appears to be stronger in the higher redshift range (0.55 < z < 0.85). Furthermore, the galaxy overdensities (with δ ≳ 1.5) within which soft AGN are embedded appear to evolve more rapidly compared to the corresponding overdensities around hard AGN. We present the results of a new spectroscopic study of Fe K-band absorption in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Using data obtained from the Suzaku public archive we have performed a statistically driven blind search for Fe xxv Heα and/or Fe xxvi Lyα absorption lines in a large sample of 51 Type 1.0-1.9 AGN. Through extensive Monte Carlo simulations we find that statistically significant absorption is detected at E ≳ 6.7 keV in 20/51 sources at the PMC ≥ 95 per cent level, which corresponds to ∼40 per cent of the total sample. In all cases, individual absorption lines are detected independently and simultaneously amongst the two (or three) available X-ray imaging spectrometer detectors, which confirms the robustness of the line detections. The most frequently observed outflow phenomenology consists of two discrete absorption troughs corresponding to Fe xxv Heα and Fe xxvi Lyα at a common velocity shift. From xstar fitting the mean column density and ionization parameter for the Fe K absorption components are log (NH/cm−2) ≈ 23 and log (ξ/erg cm s−1) ≈ 4.5, respectively. Measured outflow velocities span a continuous range from <1500 km s−1 up to ∼100 000 km s−1, with mean and median values of ∼0.1 c and ∼0.056 c, respectively. The results of this work are consistent with those recently obtained using XMM–Newton and independently provides strong evidence for the existence of very highly ionized circumnuclear material in a significant fraction of both radio-quiet and radio-loud AGN in the local universe. The origin of the different spectral components present in the high-energy (UV to X-rays/gamma-rays) spectra of Seyfert galaxies is still being debated a lot. One of the major limitations, in this respect, is the lack of really simultaneous broad-band observations that allow us to disentangle the behavior of each component and to better constrain their interconnections. The simultaneous UV to X-rays/gamma rays data obtained during the multiwavelength campaign on the bright Seyfert 1 Mrk 509 are used in this paper and tested against physically motivated broad band models. Mrk 509 was observed by XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL in October/November 2009, with one observation every four days for a total of ten observations. Each observation has been fitted with a realistic thermal Comptonization model for the continuum emission. Prompted by the correlation between the UV and soft X-ray flux, we used a thermal Comptonization component for the soft X-ray excess. We also included a warm absorber and a reflection component, as required by the precise studies previously done by our consortium. The UV to X-ray/gamma-ray emission of Mrk 509 can be well fitted by these components. The presence of a relatively hard high-energy spectrum points to the existence of a hot (kτ ∼ 100 keV), optically-thin (τ ∼ 0.5) corona producing the primary continuum. In contrast, the soft X-ray component requires a warm (kτ ∼ 1 keV), optically-thick (τ ∼ 10-20) plasma. Estimates of the amplification ratio for this warm plasma support a configuration relatively close to the "theoretical" configuration of a slab corona above a passive disk. An interesting consequence is the weak luminosity-dependence of its emission, which is a possible explanation of the roughly constant spectral shape of the soft X-ray excess seen in AGNs. The temperature (∼3 eV) and flux of the soft-photon field entering and cooling the warm plasma suggests that it covers the accretion disk down to a transition radius Rin of 10-20 Rg. This plasma could be the warm upper layer of the accretion disk. In contrast, the hot corona has a more photon-starved geometry. The high temperature (∼100 eV) of the soft-photon field entering and cooling it favors a localization of the hot corona in the inner flow. This soft-photon field could be part of the comptonized emission produced by the warm plasma. In this framework, the change in the geometry (i.e. Rin) could explain most of the observed flux and spectral variability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the identification of a new soft gamma-ray source, IGR J12319-0749, detected with the IBIS imager on board the INTEGRAL satellite. The source, which has an observed 20-100 keV flux of ∼8.3 × 10-12 erg cm-2 s-1, is spatially coincident with an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at redshift z = 3.12. The broad-band continuum, obtained by combining XRT and IBIS data, is flat (-Γ = 1.3) with evidence for a spectral break around 25 keV (100 keV in the source restframe). X-ray observations indicate flux variability, which is also supported by a comparison with a previous ROSAT measurement. IGR J12319-0749 is also a radio-emitting object likely characterised by a flat spectrum and high radio loudness; optically it is a broad-line emitting object with a massive black hole (2.8 × 109 solar masses) at its centre. The source spectral energy distribution is similar to another high-redshift blazar, 225155+2217 at z = 3.668: both objects are bright, with a high accretion disk luminosity and a Compton peak located in the hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray band. ABSTRACT In this paper we examine the percentage of type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) which require the inclusion of a soft excess component and/or significant cold absorption in the modelling of their X-ray spectra obtained by XMM-Newton. We do this by simulating spectra which mimic typical spectral shapes in order to find the maximum detectability expected at different count levels. We then apply a correction to the observed percentages found for the Scott et al. sample of 761 sources. We estimate the true percentage of AGN with a soft excess component to be 75 ± 23 per cent, suggesting that soft excesses are ubiquitous in the X-ray spectra of type 1 AGN. By carrying out joint fits on groups of low count spectra in narrow z bins in which additional spectral components were not originally detected, we show that the soft excess feature is recovered with a mean temperature kT and blackbody-to-power-law normalization ratio consistent with those of components detected in individual high count spectra. Cold absorption with NH values broadly consistent with those reported in individual spectra is also recovered. We suggest such intrinsic cold absorption is found in a minimum of ∼5 per cent of type 1 AGN and may be present in up to ∼10 per cent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. We report on the results of the first XMM-Newton systematic "excess variance" study of all the radio quiet, X-ray un-obscured AGN. The entire sample consist of 161 sources observed by XMM-Newton for more than 10 ks in pointed observations, which is the largest sample used so far to study AGN X-ray variability on time scales less than a day. Aims. Recently it has been suggested that the same engine might be at work in the core of every black hole (BH) accreting object. In this hypothesis, the same variability should be observed in all AGN, once rescaled by the MBH (MBH) and accretion rate (ṁ). Methods. We systematically compute the excess variance for all AGN, on different time-scales (10, 20, 40 and 80 ks) and in different energy bands (0.3-0.7, 0.7-2 and 2-10 keV). Results. We observe a highly significant and tight (∼0.7 dex) correlation between σ²rms and MBH. The subsample of reverberation mapped AGN shows an even smaller scatter (only a factor of 2-3) comparable to the one induced by the MBH uncertainties. This implies that X-ray variability can be used as an accurate tool to measure MBH and this method is more accurate than the ones based on single epoch optical spectra. This allows us to measure MBH for 65 AGN and estimate lower limits for the remaining 96 AGN. On the other hand, the σ²rms vs. accretion rate dependence is weaker than expected based on the PSD break frequency scaling. This strongly suggests that both the PSD high frequency break and the normalisation depend on accretion rate in such a way that they almost completely counterbalance each other (PSDamp ∝ ṁ-0.8). A highly significant correlation between σ²rms and 2-10 keV spectral index is observed. The highly significant correlations between σ²rms and both the LBol and the FWHMHβ are consistent with being just by-products of the σ²rms vs. MBH relation. The soft and medium σ²rms is very well correlated with the hard σ²rms, with no deviations from a linear one to one correlation. This suggests that the additional soft components (i.e. soft excess, warm absorber) add a minor contribution to the total variability. Once the variability is rescaled for MBH and ṁ, no significant difference between narrow-line and broad-line Seyfert 1 is observed. Conclusions. ABSTRACT We present the results of a 500 ks long XMM-Newton observation and a 120 ks long quasi-simultaneous Chandra observation of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0707−495 performed in 2010 September. Consistent with earlier results by Fabian et al. and Zoghbi et al., the spectrum is found to be dominated by relativistically broadened reflection features from an ionized accretion disc around a maximally rotating black hole. Even though the spectra changed between this observation and earlier XMM-Newton observations, the physical parameters of the black hole and accretion disc (i.e. spin and inclination) are consistent between both observations. We show that this reflection spectrum is slightly modified by absorption in a mildly relativistic, highly ionized outflow which changed velocity from around 0.11 c to 0.18 c between 2008 January and 2010 September. Alternative models, in which the spectral shape is dominated by absorption, lead to spectral fits of similar quality, however, the parameters inferred for the putative absorber are unphysical. We present an analysis of the co-added and individual 0.7-40keV spectra from seven Suzaku observations of the Sy 1.5 galaxy NGC 5548 taken over a period of eight weeks. We conclude that the source has a moderately ionized, three-zone warm absorber, a power-law continuum, and exhibits contributions from cold, distant reflection. Relativistic reflection signatures are not significantly detected in the co-added data, and we place an upper limit on the equivalent width of a relativistically broad Fe Kα line at EW ≤ 26 eV at 90% confidence. Thus NGC 5548 can be labeled as a "weak" type 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) in terms of its observed inner disk reflection signatures, in contrast to sources with very broad, strong iron lines such as MCG-6-30-15, which are likely much fewer in number. We compare physical properties of NGC 5548 and MCG-6-30-15 that might explain this difference in their reflection properties. Though there is some evidence that NGC 5548 may harbor a truncated inner accretion disk, this evidence is inconclusive, so we also consider light bending of the hard X-ray continuum emission in order to explain the lack of relativistic reflection in our observation. If the absence of a broad Fe Kα line is interpreted in the light-bending context, we conclude that the source of the hard X-ray continuum lies at radii rs ≳ 100rg. We note, however, that light-bending models must be expanded to include a broader range of physical parameter space in order to adequately explain the spectral and timing properties of average AGNs, rather than just those with strong, broad iron lines. Close encounters between galaxies are expected to be a viable mechanism, as predicted by numerical simulations, by which accretion onto supermassive black holes can be initiated. To test this scenario, we construct a sample of 562 galaxies (M* > 2.5 x 1010 M⊙) in kinematic pairs over the redshift range 0.25 < z < 1.05 that are more likely to be interacting than a well-matched control sample of 2726 galaxies not identified as being in a pair, both from the zCOSMOS 20k spectroscopic catalog. Galaxies that harbor an active galactic nucleus (AGN) are identified on the basis of their X-ray emission (L0.5-10keV > 2 x 1042 erg s-1) detected by Chandra. We find a higher fraction of an AGN in galaxies in pairs relative to isolated galaxies of similar stellar mass. Our result is primarily due to an enhancement of AGN activity, by a factor of 1.9 (observed) and 2.6 (intrinsic), for galaxies in pairs of projected separation less than 75 kpc and line-of-sight velocity offset less than 500 km s-1. This study demonstrates that close kinematic pairs are conducive environments for black hole growth, either indicating a causal physical connection or an inherent relation, such as, to enhanced star formation. In the Appendix, we describe a method for estimating the intrinsic fractions of galaxies (either in pairs or the field) hosting an AGN with confidence intervals, and an excess fraction in pairs. We estimate that Due to images restrictions, multiple line equation(s) cannot be graphically displayed of all moderate-luminosity AGN activity takes place within galaxies undergoing early stages of interaction that leaves open the question as to what physical processes are responsible for fueling the remaining ~80% that may include late-stage mergers. In this paper, we release accurate photometric redshifts for 1692 counterparts to Chandra sources in the central square degree of the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field. The availability of a large training set of spectroscopic redshifts that extends to faint magnitudes enabled photometric redshifts comparable to the highest quality results presently available for normal galaxies. We demonstrate that morphologically extended, faint X-ray sources without optical variability are more accurately described by a library of normal galaxies (corrected for emission lines) than by active galactic nucleus (AGN) dominated templates, even if these sources have AGN-like X-ray luminosities. Preselecting the library on the bases of the source properties allowed us to reach an accuracy σΔz/(1+spec) ~ 0.015 with a fraction of outliers of 5.8% for the entire Chandra-COSMOS sample. In addition, we release revised photometric redshifts for the 1735 optical counterparts of the XMM-detected sources over the entire 2 deg² of COSMOS. For 248 sources, our updated photometric redshift differs from the previous release by Δz > 0.2. These changes are predominantly due to the inclusion of newly available deep H-band photometry (HAB = 24 magi. We illustrate once again the importance of a spectroscopic training sample and how an assumption about the nature of a source together, with the number and the depth of the available bands, influences the accuracy of the photometric redshifts determined for AGN. These considerations should be kept in mind when defining the observational strategies of upcoming large surveys targeting AGNs, such as eROSITA at X-ray energies and the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder Evolutionary Map of the Universe in the radio band. Most of the extragalactic sources detected at TeV energies are BL Lac objects. They belong to the subclass of high-frequency-peaked BL Lac objects (HBLs) exhibiting spectral energy distributions with a lower energy peak in the X-ray band; this is widely interpreted as synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons. The X-ray spectra are generally curved and well described in terms of a log-parabolic shape. In a previous investigation of TeV HBLs (TBLs) we found two correlations between their spectral parameters. (1) The synchrotron peak luminosity Lp increases with its peak energy Ep and (2) the curvature parameter b decreases as Ep increases. The first is consistent with the synchrotron scenario, while the second is expected from statistical/stochastic acceleration mechanisms for the emitting electrons. Here, we present an extensive X-ray analysis of a sample of HBLs observed with XMM-Newton and Swift but undetected at TeV energies (UBLs), to compare their spectral behavior with that of TBLs. Investigating the distributions of their spectral parameters and comparing the TBL X-ray spectra with that of UBLs, we develop a criterion to select the best HBL candidates for future TeV observations. We present XMM-Newton observations of three active galactic nuclei (AGNs) taken as part of a hunt to find very heavily obscured Compton-thick AGNs. For obscuring columns greater than 1025 cm-2, AGNs are only visible at energies below 10 keV via reflected/scattered radiation, characterized by a flat power law. We therefore selected three objects (ESO 417-G006, IRAS 05218-1212, and MCG - 01-05-047) from the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) hard X-ray survey catalog with Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT) 0.5-10 keV spectra with flat power-law indices as candidate Compton-thick sources for follow-up observations with the more sensitive instruments on XMM-Newton. The XMM spectra, however, rule out reflection-dominated models based on the weakness of the observed Fe Kα lines. Instead, the spectra are well fit by a model of a power-law continuum obscured by a Compton-thin absorber plus a soft excess. This result is consistent with previous follow-up observations of two other flat-spectrum BAT-detected AGNs. Thus, out of the six AGNs in the 22 month BAT catalog with apparently flat Swift XRT spectra, all five that have had follow-up observations are not likely Compton thick. We also present new optical spectra of two of these objects, IRAS 05218-1212 and MCG -01-05-047. Interestingly, though both the AGNs have similar X-ray spectra, their optical spectra are completely different, adding evidence against the simplest form of the geometric unified model of AGNs. IRAS 05218-1212 appears in the optical as a Seyfert 1, despite the ~8.5 x 1022 cm-2 line-of-sight absorbing column indicated by its X-ray spectrum. We report the results from Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of a sample of 10 type 1 quasars selected to have unusual UV emission-line properties (weak and blueshifted high-ionization lines; strong UV Fe emission) similar to those of PHL 1811, a confirmed intrinsically X-ray weak quasar. These quasars were identified by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey at high redshift (z ≈ 2.2); eight are radio quiet while two are radio intermediate. All of the radio-quiet PHL 1811 analogs, without exception, are notably X-ray weak by a mean factor of ≈13. These sources lack broad absorption lines and have blue UV/optical continua, supporting the hypothesis that they are intrinsically X-ray weak like PHL 1811 itself. However, their average X-ray spectrum appears to be harder than those of typical quasars, which may indicate the presence of heavy intrinsic X-ray absorption. Our sample of radio-quiet PHL 1811 analogs supports a connection between an X-ray weak spectral energy distribution and PHL 1811-like UV emission lines; this connection provides an economical way to identify X-ray weak type 1 quasars. The fraction of radio-quiet PHL 1811 analogs in the radio-quiet quasar population is estimated to be ≲ 1.2%. We have investigated correlations between relative X-ray brightness and UV emission-line properties (e.g., C IV equivalent width and blueshift) for a sample combining our radio-quiet PHL 1811 analogs, PHL 1811 itself, and typical type 1 quasars. These correlation analyses suggest that PHL 1811 analogs may have extreme wind-dominated broad emission-line regions. Observationally, the radio-quiet PHL 1811 analogs appear to be a subset (≈30%) of radio-quiet weak-line quasars (WLQs). The existence of a subset of quasars in which high-ionization "shielding gas" covers most of the broad emission-line region (BELR), but little more than the BELR, could potentially unify the PHL 1811 analogs and WLQs. The two radio-intermediate PHL 1811 analogs are X-ray bright. X-ray spectral analyses and consideration of their multiwavelength properties suggest that one of them has jet-dominated X-ray emission, while the nature of the other remains unclear. We present a long (116 ks) Suzaku observation of the broad-line radio galaxy (BLRG) 3C 382 acquired in 2007 April. A Swift BAT spectrum in 15-200 keV from the 58 month survey is also analyzed, together with an archival XMM-Newton EPIC exposure of 20 ks obtained one year after Suzaku. Our main result is the finding with Suzaku of a broad Fe K line with a relativistic profile consistent with emission from an accretion disk at tens of gravitational radii from the central black hole. The XIS data indicate emission from highly ionized iron and allow us to set tight, albeit model-dependent, constraints on the inner and outer radii of the disk reflecting region, rin≅ 10rg and rout ≅ 20rg, respectively, and on the disk inclination, i ≅ 30°. Two ionized reflection components are possibly observed, with similar contributions of ∼10% to the total continuum-a highly ionized one, with logϵ ≅ 3 erg s-1 cm, which successfully models the relativistic line, and a mildly ionized one, with logϵ 1.5 erg s-1 cm, which models the narrow Fe Kα and high energy hump. When both these components are included, there is no further requirement for an additional blackbody soft excess below 2 keV. The Suzaku data confirm the presence of a warm absorber previously known from grating studies. After accounting for all the spectral features, the intrinsic photon index of the X-ray continuum is Γx ≅ 1.8 with a cutoff energy at ∽200 keV, consistent with Comptonization models and excluding jet-related emission up to these energies. Comparison of the X-ray properties of 3C 382 and other BLRGs to Seyferts recently observed with Suzaku and BAT confirms the idea that the distinction between radio-loud and radio-quiet active galactic nucleus at X-rays is blurred. The two classes form a continuum distribution in terms of X-ray photon index, reflection strength, and Fe K line width (related to the disk emission radius), with BLRGs clustered at one end of the distribution. This points to a common structure of the central engine, with only a few fundamental parameter(s) responsible for the radio-loud/radio-quiet division. We use deep archival Chandra and XMM–Newton observations of three of the brightest cluster-centre radio galaxies in the sky, Cygnus A, Hercules A and Hydra A, to search for inverse-Compton emission from the population of electrons responsible for the low-frequency radio emission. Using simulated observations, we derive robust estimates for the uncertainties on the normalization of an inverse-Compton component in the presence of the variations in background thermal temperature actually seen in our target objects. Using these, together with the pressures external to the lobes, we are able to place interesting upper limits on the fraction of the energy density in the lobes of Hydra A and Her A that can be provided by a population of relativistic electrons with standard properties, assuming that the magnetic field is not dominant; these limits are consistent with the long-standing idea that the energy density in these lobes is dominated by a non-radiating particle population. In Cygnus A, we find evidence in the spectra for an additional hard component over and above the expected thermal emission, which is plausibly a detection of inverse-Compton emission; even in this case, though, some additional non-radiating particles and/or a departure from our standard assumptions on the electron spectrum are necessary to allow pressure balance at the mid-point of the lobes. As this is not the case in other Fanaroff–Riley class II radio galaxies, we suggest that the rich environment of Cygnus A may have some effect on its lobe particle content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a study of the X-ray emission from the nuclear region of the low-surface-brightness (LSB) galaxy UGC 6614. Very little is known about the central objects in LSB galaxies, especially their X-ray properties and X-ray spectra. In this study we have used XMM–Newton archival data to study the characteristics of the X-ray spectrum and the X-ray flux variability of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the LSB galaxy UGC 6614. The nucleus of UGC 6614 is very bright in X-ray emission with an absorption-corrected 0.2–10.0 keV luminosity of . The X-ray spectrum is found to be power-law type with a moderate column density. A short time-scale of intensity variation and large X-ray flux are indicative of the presence of a black hole at the centre of this galaxy. Using the method of excess variance, we have determined the black hole mass to be . The X-ray spectral properties are similar to that of the Seyfert I-type AGNs. Our study thus demonstrates that although LSB galaxies are poor in star formation, they may harbour AGNs with X-ray properties comparable to that seen in more luminous spiral galaxies. Long-exposure Suzaku X-ray observations of the nearby active galaxy NGC 4051 from 2005 and 2008 are analysed, in an attempt to reach a self-consistent understanding of both the spectral variability on long time-scales and the broad-band variability at high time resolution. The techniques of principal components analysis and a maximum likelihood method of power spectrum analysis are used. In common with other type I active galactic nuclei (AGN), the spectral variability is dominated by a varying-normalization power-law component together with a quasi-steady, hard-spectrum offset component that contains Fe K atomic features. NGC 4051 displays a strong excess over a power law at energies of above 20 keV, some fraction of which also appears to vary with the power-law continuum. The fast time-scale power spectrum has a shape generally consistent with previous determinations, with the previously known dependence on broad-band photon energy, but in the new data significant differences are found between the low and high flux states of the source, demonstrating that the power spectrum is non-stationary. Frequency-dependent time lags between the hard and soft bands of up to s are measured. The existence of the observed time lags excludes the possibility that the hard spectral component originates as reflection from the inner accretion disc. We instead show that the time lags and their frequency and energy dependence may be explained simply by the effects of reverberation in the hard band, caused by reflection from a thick shell of material with maximum lags of about 10 000 s. If the reflecting material surrounds the AGN, it extends to a distance of about cm, 600 gravitational radii, from the illuminating source and the global covering factor is , confirming previous suggestions that type I AGN have high covering factors of absorbing and reflecting material. Given the spectral and timing similarities with other type I AGN, we infer that this source structure is common in the type I population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A detailed analysis of a long XMM–Newton observation of the narrow-line type 1 Seyfert galaxy 1H0707-495 is presented, including spectral fitting, spectral variability and timing studies. The two main features in the spectrum are the drop at ∼7 keV and a complex excess below 1 keV. These are well described by two broad, K and L, iron lines. Alternative models based on absorption, although they may fit the high-energy drop, cannot account for the 1 keV complexity and the spectrum as a whole. Spectral variability shows that the spectrum is composed of at least two components, which are interpreted as a power law dominating between 1–4 keV and a reflection component outside this range. The high count rate at the iron L energies has enabled us to measure a significant soft lag of ∼30 s between 0.3–1 and 1–4 keV, meaning that the direct hard emission leads the reflected emissions. We present new observational determinations of the evolution of the 2–10 keV X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN). We utilize data from a number of surveys including both the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Fields and the AEGIS-X 200 ks survey, enabling accurate measurements of the evolution of the faint end of the XLF. We combine direct, hard X-ray selection and spectroscopic follow-up or photometric redshift estimates at with a rest-frame UV colour pre-selection approach at higher redshifts to avoid biases associated with catastrophic failure of the photometric redshifts. Only robust optical counterparts to X-ray sources are considered using a likelihood ratio matching technique. A Bayesian methodology is developed that considers redshift probability distributions, incorporates selection functions for our high-redshift samples and allows robust comparison of different evolutionary models. We statistically account for X-ray sources without optical counterparts to correct for incompleteness in our samples. We also account for Poissonian effects on the X-ray flux estimates and sensitivities and thus correct for the Eddington bias. We find that the XLF retains the same shape at all redshifts, but undergoes strong luminosity evolution out to , and an overall negative density evolution with increasing redshift, which thus dominates the evolution at earlier times. We do not find evidence that a luminosity-dependent density evolution, and the associated flattening of the faint-end slope, is required to describe the evolution of the XLF. We find significantly higher space densities of low-luminosity, high-redshift AGN than in prior studies, and a smaller shift in the peak of the number density to lower redshifts with decreasing luminosity. The total luminosity density of AGN peaks at , but there is a mild decline to higher redshifts. We find that >50 per cent of black hole growth takes place at , with around half in AGN. We present a catalogue of 3405 X-ray sources from the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) Bright Source Catalogue which fall within the area covered by the 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS). The catalogue is count-rate limited at 0.05 cts s−1 in the X-ray and covers the area of sky with and . The RASS–6dFGS sample was one of the additional target catalogues of the 6dFGS and as a result we obtained optical spectra for 2224 (65 per cent) RASS sources. Of these, 1715 (77 per cent) have reliable redshifts with a median redshift of (excluding the Galactic sources). For the optically bright sources in the observed sample, over 90 per cent have reliable redshifts. The catalogue mainly comprises quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) and active galaxies but also includes 238 Galactic sources. Of the sources with reliable redshifts the majority are type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN, 69 per cent), while 12 per cent are type 2 AGN, 6 per cent absorption-line galaxies and 13 per cent are stars. We also identify a small number of optically faint, very low redshift, compact objects which fall outside the general trend in the plane. The RASS–6dFGS catalogue complements a number of Northern hemisphere samples, particularly the ROSAT Bright Source Catalogue–NRAO VLA Sky Survey (RBSC–NVSS) sample ( Bauer et al. 2000 ), and furthermore, in the same region of sky reveals an additional 561 sources that were not identified as part of that sample. We detect 918 sources (27 per cent) of the RASS–6dFGS sample in the radio using either the 1.4 GHz NVSS or the 843 MHz Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS) catalogues and find that the detection rate changes with redshift. At redshifts larger than 1 virtually all of these sources have radio counterparts and with a median flux density of 1.15 Jy, they are much stronger than the median flux density of 28.6 mJy for the full sample. We attribute this to the fact that the X-ray flux of these objects is being boosted by a jet component, possibly Doppler boosted, that is only present in radio-loud AGN. We present the results from the spectral analysis of more than 7500 Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer ( RXTE) spectra of 10 active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our main goal was to study their long-term X-ray spectral variability. The sources in the sample are nearby, X-ray bright, and they have been observed by RXTE regularly over a long period of time (∼7–11 yr). High-frequency breaks have been detected in their power spectra, and these characteristic frequencies imply time-scales of the order of a few days or weeks. Consequently, the RXTE observations we have used most probably sample most of the flux and spectral variations that these objects exhibit. Thus, the RXTE data are ideal for our purpose. Fits to the individual spectra were performed in the 3–20 keV energy band. We modelled the data in a uniform way using simple phenomenological models (a power law with the addition of Gaussian line and/or edge to model the iron Kα emission/absorption features, if needed) to consistently parametrize the shape of the observed X-ray continuum of the sources in the sample. We found that the average spectral slope does not correlate with source luminosity or black hole mass, while it correlates positively with the average accretion rate. We have also determined the (positive) spectral slope–flux relation for each object, over a flux range larger than before. We found that this correlation is similar in all objects, except for NGC 5548 which displays limited spectral variations for its flux variability. We discuss this global spectral slope–flux trend in the light of current models for spectral variability. We consider (i) intrinsic variability, expected, for example, from Comptonization processes, (ii) variability caused by absorption of X-rays by a single absorber whose ionization parameter varies proportionally to the continuum flux variations, (iii) variability resulting from the superposition of a constant reflection component and an intrinsic power law which is variable in flux but constant in shape and (iv) variability resulting from the superposition of a constant reflection component and an intrinsic power law which is variable both in flux and in shape. Our final conclusion is that scenario (iv) provides the best fit to the data of all objects, except for NGC 5548. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MCG–6-30-15 is the archetypal example of a type I active galaxy showing broad ‘red-wing’ emission in its X-ray spectrum at energies below the 6.4 keV Fe Kα emission line and a continuum excess above 20 keV. Miller et al. showed that these spectral features could be caused by clumpy absorbing material, but Reynolds et al. have argued that the observed Fe Kα line luminosity is inconsistent with this explanation unless the global covering factor of the absorber(s) is very low. However, the Reynolds et al. calculation effectively considers the only source of opacity to be the Fe K bound–free transition and neglects the opacity at the line energy: correction to realistic opacity decreases the predicted line flux by a large factor. We also discuss the interpretation of the covering factor and the possible effect of occultation by the accretion disc. Finally, we consider a model for MCG–6-30-15 dominated by clumpy absorption, which is consistent with a global covering factor of 0.45, although models that include the effects of Compton scattering are required to reach a full understanding. We find a significant anticorrelation between the hard X-ray photon index Γ and the Eddington ratio for a sample of low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions and local Seyfert galaxies, compiled from literature with Chandra or XMM–Newton observations. This result is in contrast with the positive correlation found in luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN), while it is similar to that of X-ray binaries (XRBs) in the low/hard state. Our result is qualitatively consistent with the spectra produced from advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs). It implies that the X-ray emission of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN) may originate from the Comptonization process in ADAF, and the accretion process in LLAGN may be similar to that of XRBs in the low/hard state, which is different from that in luminous AGN. Hawkins reported on a class of ‘naked’ active galactic nuclei (AGN) characterized by strong amplitude optical brightness variability and the complete absence of broad emission lines in the optical spectrum. The variability suggests that the nucleus is seen directly, however the absence of broad lines contradicts the simple formulation of Unified Models for AGN. We present the results of quasi-simultaneous spectroscopic observations with XMM–Newton and New Technology Telescope (NTT) (La Silla) of two ‘naked’ AGN. We confirm the ‘naked’ nature of Q2131−427 for which no broad emission line components have been detected in the optical spectrum and its X-ray spectrum shows no signs of intrinsic absorption. The optical and X-ray mismatch in this source cannot be ascribed to a high nuclear dust-to-gas ratio and a Compton-thick nature is ruled out on the basis of the high ratio. The broad-line region (BLR) may be completely absent in this source, possibly as a consequence of its low Eddington ratio. On the other hand, the optical spectrum of Q2130−431 shows Hα and Hβ broad emission line components, revealing the presence of a BLR. A mild X-ray absorption is expected in intermediate type 1.8 Seyfert galaxies like Q2130−431, however we put a very low upper limit on the column density , also the low Balmer decrement suggests that the BLR itself does not suffer from reddening. We propose that in this object the BLR is intrinsically weak, making a case of ‘true’ intermediate Seyfert galaxy. We also report on the X-ray detection of the Abell 3783 galaxy cluster in the XMM–Newton field of view of the Q2131−427 observation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have defined a sample of 63 active galactic nuclei with strong forbidden high-ionization line (FHIL) emission. These lines, with ionization potentials eV, respond to a portion of the spectrum that is often difficult to observe directly, thereby providing constraints on the extreme ultraviolet-soft X-ray continuum. The sources are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) on the basis of their [Fe x]λ6374 Å emission, yielding one of the largest and the most homogeneous samples of FHIL-emitting galaxies. We fit a sequence of models to both FHILs ([Fe xi], [Fe x] and [Fe vii]) and lower ionization emission lines ([O iii], [O i], , [N ii], [S ii]) in the SDSS spectra. These data are combined with X-ray measurements from the ROSAT satellite, which are available for half of the sample. The correlations between these parameters are discussed for both the overall sample and subsets defined by spectroscopic classifications. The primary results are evidence that (1) the [Fe x] and [Fe xi] lines are photoionized and their strength is proportional to the continuum flux around 250 eV, (2) the FHIL-emitting clouds form a stratified outflow in which the [Fe x] and [Fe xi] source regions extend sufficiently close to the broad-line region that they are partially obscured in Seyfert 2s, whereas the [Fe vii] source region is more extended and is unaffected by obscuration, (3) narrow-lined Seyfert 1s (NLS1s) tend to have the strongest [Fe x] flux (relative to lower ionization lines) and (4) the most extreme [Fe x] ratios (such as [Fe x]/[O iii] or [Fe x]/[Fe vii]) are found in the NLS1s with the narrowest broad lines and appear to be an optical-band indication of objects with strong X-ray soft excesses. We report two new XMM–Newton observations of PG1211+143 in 2007 December, again finding evidence for the fast outflow of highly ionized gas first detected in 2001. Stacking the new spectra with those from two earlier XMM–Newton observations reveals strong and broad emission lines of Fe xxv and O viii, indicating the fast outflow to be persistent and to have a large covering factor. This finding confirms a high mass rate for the ionized outflow in PG1211+143 and provides the first direct measurement of a wide angle, subrelativistic outflow from an active galactic nuclei (AGN) transporting mechanical energy with the potential to disrupt the growth of the host galaxy. We combine Chandra and XMM–Newton X-ray data from our previous papers with new X-ray observations and with Spitzer mid-infrared (mid-IR) data in order to study the nature of the nuclei of radio galaxies and radio-loud quasars with from the 3CRR sample. The significant increase in sample size over our previous work, the reduction of bias in the sample as a result of new observations and the availability of more mid-IR data allow us to show conclusively that almost all objects classed as low-excitation radio galaxies in optical spectroscopic studies lack a radiatively efficient active nucleus. We show that the distribution of absorbing columns in the narrow-line radio galaxies differs from the population of X-ray-selected radio-quiet type 2 quasars and from that in local Seyfert 2s. We comment on the current evidence for the nature of the soft X-ray component in radio-galaxy nuclear spectra, concluding that a jet origin for this component is very hard to evade. Finally, we discuss the recently discovered ‘fundamental plane’ of black hole activity, showing that care must be taken when placing radio-loud active galactic nucleus (AGN) on such diagnostic diagrams. We draw a comparison between active galactic nuclei (AGN) and Galactic black hole binaries (GBHs) using a uniform description of spectral energy distribution of these two classes of X-ray sources. We parametrize spectra of GBHs with an parameter which we define as a slope of a nominal power-law function between 3 and 20 keV. We show that this parameter can be treated as an equivalent of the X-ray loudness, , used to describe AGN spectra. We do not find linear correlation between the and disc flux (similar to that between and optical/UV luminosity found in AGN). Instead, we show that follows a well-defined pattern during a GBH outburst. We find that tend to cluster around 1, 1.5 and 2, which corresponds to the hard, very high/intermediate and soft spectral states, respectively. We conclude that majority of the observed Type 1 radio quiet AGN are in the spectral state corresponding to the very high/intermediate state of GBHs. The same conclusion is valid for radio-loud AGN. We also study variations of the spectral slopes ( and the X-ray photon index, Γ) as a function of disc and Comptonization fluxes. We discuss these dependencies in the light of correlations of and Γ with the optical/UV and X-ray 2 keV fluxes considered for AGN and quasars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The X-ray quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) seen in RE J1034+396 is so far unique amongst active galactic nuclei (AGN). Here, we look at another unique feature of RE J1034+396, namely its huge soft X-ray excess, to see if this is related in any way to the detection of the QPO. We show that all potential models considered for the soft energy excess can fit the 0.3–10 keV X-ray spectrum, but the energy dependence of the rapid variability (which is dominated by the QPO) strongly supports a spectral decomposition where the soft excess is from low-temperature Comptonization of the disc emission and remains mostly constant, while the rapid variability is produced by the power-law tail changing in normalization. The presence of the QPO in the tail rather than in the disc is a common feature in black hole binaries (BHBs), but low-temperature Comptonization of the disc spectrum is not generally seen in these systems. The main exception to this is GRS 1915+105, the only BHB which routinely shows super-Eddington luminosities. We speculate that the super-Eddington accretion rates lead to a change in disc structure, and that this also triggers the X-ray QPO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multi-epoch XMM–Newton spectra of the two narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1), Mrk 478 and EXO 1346.2+2645, are presented. The data were fitted with different models, including the relativistically blurred reflection modelreflionx, which was found to give a good description of both spectra in all epochs. The two sources are reflection dominated with the illuminating continuum hidden from view. This can be explained in terms of either a corrugated disc or strong gravitational light bending effects. The emission from these two sources comes from a very small region (a few gravitational radii), very close to a rapidly spinning black hole. Spectral variability analysis shows that both sources have constant rms spectra, and constant hardness ratios in all epochs, in agreement with a single spectral component. We report on the X-ray observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy ESO 323−G077 performed with XMM–Newton. The EPIC spectra show a complex spectrum with conspicuous absorption and emission features. The continuum emission can be modelled with a power law with an index of in the whole XMM–Newton energy band, marginally consistent with typical values of type I objects. An absorption component with an uncommonly high equivalent hydrogen column is affecting the soft part of the spectrum. Additionally, two warm absorption components are also present in the spectrum. The lower ionized one, mainly imprinting the soft band of the spectrum, has an ionization parameter of and an outflowing velocity of . Two absorption lines located at ∼6.7 and can be modelled with the highly ionized absorber. The ionization parameter and outflowing velocity of the gas measured are and , respectively. Four emission lines were also detected in the soft energy band. The most likely explanation for these emission lines is that they are associated with an outflowing gas with a velocity of ∼2000 km s−1. The data suggest that the same gas which is causing the absorption could also being responsible of these emission features. Finally, the XMM–Newton spectrum shows the presence of a relativistic iron emission line likely originated in the accretion disc of a Kerr black hole with an inclination of ∼25°. We propose a model to explain the observed X-ray properties which invokes the presence of a two-phase outflow with cone-like structure and a velocity of the order of . The inner layer of the cone would be less ionized, or even neutral, than the outer layer. The inclination angle of the source would be lower than the opening angle of the outflowing cone. Starting from a complete sample of type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) observed by INTEGRAL in the 20–40 keV band, we have selected a set of eight AGN which can be classified as radio-loud objects according to their 1.4 GHz power density, radio-to-hard X-ray flux density ratio and radio morphology. The sample contains six broad-line radio Galaxies and two candidate ones. Most of the objects in our sample display a double-lobe morphology, both on small and large scales. For all the objects, we present broad-band (1–110 keV) spectral analysis using INTEGRAL observations together with archival XMM–Newton, Chandra, Swift/XRT and Swift/BAT data. We constrain the primary continuum (photon index and cut-off energy), intrinsic absorption and reprocessing features (iron line and reflection) in most of the objects. The sources analysed here show remarkable similarities to radio-quiet type 1 AGN with respect to most of the parameters analysed; we only find marginal evidence for weaker reprocessing features in our objects compared to their radio-quiet counterparts. Similarly, we do not find any correlation between the spectral parameters studied and the source core dominance or radio to 20–100 keV flux density ratios, suggesting that what makes our objects radio loud has no effect on their high-energy characteristics. In recent years, there have been many reported detections of highly redshifted or blueshifted narrow spectral lines (both emission or absorption) in the X-ray spectra of active galaxies, but these are all modest detections in terms of their statistical significance. The aim of this paper is to review the issue of the significance of these detections and, in particular, take account of publication bias. A literature search revealed 38 reported detections of narrow, strongly shifted X-ray lines in the 1.5–20 keV spectra of Seyfert galaxies and quasars. These published data show a close, linear relationship between the estimated line strength and its uncertainty, in the sense that better observations (with smaller uncertainties) only ever show the smallest lines. This result is consistent with many of the reported lines being false detections resulting from random fluctuations, drawn from a large body of data and filtered by publication bias such that only the most ‘significant’ fluctuations are ever reported. The reality of many of these features, and certainly their prevalence in the population at large, therefore remains an open question that is best settled though uniform analysis (and reporting) of higher quality observations. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are very interesting objects which display peculiar properties when compared to their broad-line analogues (BLS1). Although well studied in many wavebands, their behaviour at >10 keV is poorly studied and yet important to discriminate between models invoked to explain the complexity observed in the X-ray band. Here, we present for the first time high-energy observations (17–100 keV) of five NLS1 galaxies (three bona fide and two candidates) detected by INTEGRAL/Imager on Board INTEGRAL Satellite (IBIS) and provide for all of them a broad-band spectral analysis using data obtained by Swift/ XRT below 10 keV. The combined INTEGRAL spectrum is found to be steeper than those of classical Seyfert 1 objects. This is due to a high-energy cut-off, which is required in some individual fits as in the average broad-band spectrum. The location of this high-energy cut-off is at lower energies than typically seen in classical type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs); a reflection component may also be present but its value is compatible with those seen in standard Seyfert 1s. We do not detect a soft excess in individual objects but only in their cumulative spectrum. Our results suggest a lower plasma temperature for the accreting plasma which combined to the high accretion rates (close to the Eddington rate) points to different nuclear conditions in broad and NLS1 galaxies, likely related to different evolutionary stages. We report on a 90 ks Suzaku observation of the radio-loud quasar 4C+74.26. The source was observed in its highest flux state to date, and we find that it brightened by about 20 per cent during the observation. We see evidence of spectral hardening as the count rate increases and also find that the rms variability increases with energy up to about 4 keV. We clearly detect a broadened Fe line but conclude that it does not require any emission from inside about 50 rg, although a much smaller inner radius cannot be ruled out. The large inner radius of our best fit implies that the inner disc is either missing or not strongly illuminated. We suggest that the latter scenario may occur if the power-law source is located high above the disc, or if the emission is beamed away from the disc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on a 151-ks net exposure Suzaku observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335. The 0.5–40 keV spectrum contains a broad Fe line, a strong soft excess below about 2 keV and a Compton hump around 20–30 keV. We find that a model consisting of a power law and two reflectors provides the best fit to the time-averaged spectrum. In this model, an ionized, heavily blurred, inner reflector produces most of the soft excess, while an almost neutral outer reflector (outside ∼ 40 rg) produces most of the Fe line emission. The spectral variability of the observation is characterized by spectral hardening at very low count rates. In terms of our power-law + two-reflector model it seems like this hardening is mainly caused by pivoting of the power law. The rms spectrum of the entire observation has the curved shape commonly observed in active galactic nuclei, although the shape is significantly flatter when an interval which does not contain any deep dip in the light curve is considered. We also examine a previous 133-ks XMM–Newton observation of Mrk 335. We find that the XMM–Newton spectrum can be fitted with a similar two-reflector model as the Suzaku data and we confirm that the rms spectrum of the observation is flat. The flat rms spectra, as well as the high-energy data from the Suzaku PIN detector, disfavour an absorption origin for the soft excess in Mrk 335. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
