Aims. We study the X-ray power spectrum of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in order to investigate whether Seyfert I and II power spectra are similar or not and whether AGN variability depends on the mass and accretion rate of black holes as well as to compare the power spectra of AGN with the power spectra of Galactic X-ray black hole binaries. Method. We used 14–195 keV band light curves from the 157-month Swift/BAT hard X-ray survey, and we computed the mean power spectrum and excess variance of AGN in narrow black hole mass and AGN luminosity bins. We fitted a power-law model to the AGN power spectra, and we investigated whether the power spectrum parameters and the excess variance depend on the black hole mass, luminosity, and accretion rate of AGN. Results. We found the Seyfert I and Seyfert II power spectra to be identical, in agreement with AGN unification models. The mean AGN X-ray power spectrum has the same power-law like shape, with a slope of −1 in all AGN irrespective of their luminosity and black hole mass. We did not detect any flattening to a slope of zero at frequencies as low as 10−9 Hz. We detected an anti-correlation between the power spectral density function (PSD) amplitude and the accretion rate, similar to what has been seen in the past in the 2–10 keV band. This implies that the variability amplitude in AGN decreases with an increasing accretion rate. The universal AGN power spectrum is consistent with the mean 2–9 keV band Cyg X-1 power spectrum in its soft state. We detected a small difference in amplitude, but this is probably due to the difference in energy. Conclusions. The mean low-frequency AGN X-ray power spectrum is consistent with the extension of the mean 0.01–25 Hz Cyg X-1 power spectrum in its soft state to lower frequencies. We cannot prove that the mean AGN PSD is analogous to the mean Cyg X-1 PSD in its soft state, as we do not know the location of the high-frequency break in the hard X-ray AGN PSDs. However, if this is the case, then the accretion disc in AGN probably extends to the radius of the innermost circular stable orbit (as is probably the case with the black hole binaries in their soft state). The X-ray corona will then be located on top, illuminating the disc and producing the X-ray reflection and disc reverberation phenomena commonly observed in these objects. Furthermore, the agreement between the PSD amplitude in AGN and the Cyg X-1 (either in the soft or the hard state) over many decades in frequency indicates that the X-ray variability process is probably the same in all accreting objects, irrespective of the mass of the compact object. We analyse medium resolution optical spectra of 14 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies with average to strong iron emission. The targets were observed several times over a 2-yr period to probe the nature of spectral variations. Parameters determined from fitting the line profiles include relative strength, width, and asymmetry. We explore the applicability of various profile combinations to H β. We achieve satisfactory fits using three components: the narrow and broad components characteristic of all Seyfert 1 galaxies and that are reasonably represented by Gaussian profiles, and an intermediate component with width similar to that of the Fe  ii lines. This intermediate component accounted for the largest fraction of the H β flux in most of our sample, especially when fitted with a Lorentzian instead of a Gaussian profile. This Lorentzian component improves the overall H β fits in most cases. In contrast to many other types of active galactic nucleus, no dramatic spectral changes were detected in our sample over the 2-yr period spanning this study, even though some of our targets are known for large and rapid X-ray variability. In particular, we find the variability of the Fe  ii lines relative to the H β intermediate component to be minimal. For the [O  iii ] lines, we identified asymmetries in almost all our targets well represented by two Gaussians: a primary central and a second blueshifted component. These may signify different gas dynamics connected with nuclear outflow. As in several previous studies, we identify a clear correlation between [O  iii ] asymmetry and its core component width. NGC 5548 was recently monitored intensively from NIR to X-rays as part of the STORM campaign. Its disc emission was found to lag behind the observed X-rays, while the measured time lag was increasing with wavelength. These results are consistent with the assumption that short-term variability in AGN emission is driven by the X-ray illumination of the accretion disc. In this work, we studied the power spectrum of UV/optical and X-ray emission of NGC 5548, using the data of the STORM campaign as well as previous Swift data, in order to investigate the relation between the UV/optical and X-ray variability and to examine its consistency with the above picture. We demonstrate that even the power spectrum results are compatible with a standard disc being illuminated by X-rays, with low accretion rates, but the details are not entirely consistent with the results from the modelling of the 'τ versus λ' relation. The differences indicate that the inner disc might be covered by a 'warm corona' which does not allow the detection of UV/optical emission from the inner disc. The advent of new time domain surveys and the imminent increase in astronomical data expose the shortcomings of traditional time series analysis (such as power spectra analysis) in characterizing the abundantly varied, complex, and stochastic light curves of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). Recent applications of novel methods from non-linear dynamics have shown promise in characterizing higher modes of variability and time-scales in AGN. Recurrence analysis in particular can provide complementary information about characteristic time-scales revealed by other methods, as well as probe the nature of the underlying physics in these objects. Recurrence analysis was developed to study dynamical trajectories in phase space, which can be constructed from 1D time series such as light curves. We apply the methods of recurrence analysis to two optical light curves of Kepler -monitored AGN. We confirm the detection and period of an optical quasi-periodic oscillation in one AGN, and confirm multiple other time-scales recovered from other methods ranging from 5 to 60 d in both objects. We detect regions in the light curves that deviate from regularity, provide evidence of determinism and non-linearity in the mechanisms underlying one light curve (KIC 9650712), and determine realizations of a linear stochastic process describe the dominant variability in the other light curve (Zwicky 229–015). We discuss possible underlying processes driving the dynamics of the light curves and their diverse classes of variability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. We characterise the properties of stars, dust, and gas and their spatial distribution in the central region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. Method. Our study is based on near-infrared (YJH, 0.95−1.650 μm, R = 350) long-slit spectroscopy observations of the central region of NGC 1068 with a 0.4″ spatial resolution. We decomposed the observed continuum emission into three components: hot dust, stars, and scattered light from the central engine. We measured their contributions at various distances from the nucleus. We also measured fluxes and Doppler shifts for the emission lines in our spectrum to probe the physical conditions of the narrow line region. Results. Dust and stars are the main sources of continuum emission, but scattered light from the central engine has also been detected in the very central region. Together, these three components reproduce the observed continuum well. The dust emission is compatible with a 830 K blackbody. It has only been detected in the very central region and is not spatially resolved. The stellar content is ubiquitous. It harbours a 250 pc cusp centred around the nucleus, over-imposed on a young stellar background. The spectrum of the cusp is consistent with a 120 Myr old single stellar population. Finally, the emission lines exhibit a significant Doppler shift that is consistent with a radial outflow from the nucleus in a biconical structure. We present optical spectroscopy of candidate active galactic nuclei (AGN) pinpointed by a Swift follow-up campaign on unidentified transients in the XMM-Newton Slew Survey, increasing the completeness of the identifications of AGN in the Survey. Our Swift follow-up campaign identified 17 X-ray Telescope-detected candidate AGN, of which 9 were selected for optical follow-up and a further two were confirmed as AGN elsewhere. Using data obtained at the William Herschel Telescope, Very Large Telescope and New Technology Telescope, we find AGN features in seven of the candidates. We classify six as Seyfert types 1.0-1.5, with broad-line region velocities spanning 2000-12000 km s-1, and identify one as a possible type II AGN, consistent with the lack of a soft band X-ray detection in the Slew Survey. The virial black hole mass estimates for the sample lie between 1 × 108 and 3× 109 M☉, with one source likely emitting close to its Eddington rate, LBol/LEdd ~ 0.9. We find a wide redshift range 0.08 < z < 0.9 for the nine now confirmed AGN drawn from the unidentified Slew Survey sample. One source remaining unclassified shows outbursts rarely seen before in AGN. We conclude that AGN discovered in this way are consistent with the largely non-varying, Slew-selected, known AGN population. We also find parallels with XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Survey AGN selected from pointed observations, and postulate that shallow X-ray surveys select AGN drawn from the same populations that have been characterized in deeper X-ray-selected samples. The narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 is known to exhibit significant X-ray spectral/ flux variations and have a number of emission/absorption features. X-ray observations have revealed that these absorption features are blueshifted, which indicates that NGC 4051 has warm absorber outflow. In order to constrain physical parameters of the warm absorber outflow, we analyse the archival data with the longest exposure taken by XMM-Newton in 2009.We calculate the root-mean-square (rms) spectra with the grating spectral resolution for the first time. The rms spectra have a sharp peak and several dips, which can be explained by variable absorption features and non-variable emission lines; a lower ionized warm absorber (WA1: log ξ = 1.5, υ = -650 km s-1) shows large variability, whereas higher ionized warm absorbers (WA2: log ξ = 2.5, υ =-4100 km s-1, WA3: logξ = 3.4, υ =-6100 km s-1) show little variability. WA1 shows the maximum variability at a time-scale of ~104 s, suggesting that the absorber locates at ~103 times of the Schwarzschild radius. The depth of the absorption features due to WA1 and the observed soft X-ray flux are anticorrelated in several observational sequences, which can be explained by variation of partial covering fraction of the double-layer blobs that are composed of the Compton-thick core and the ionized layer (=WA1). WA2 and WA3 show little variability and presumably extend uniformly in the line of sight. The present result shows that NGC 4051 has two types of the warm absorber outflows; the static, high-ionized and extended line-driven disc winds and the variable, low-ionized and clumpy double-layer blobs. We present high-angular (0.17-0.35 arcsec) resolution imaging polarimetric observations of Mrk 231 in the 3.1 μm filter using MMT-Pol on the 6.5-m MMT, and in the 8.7, 10.3, and 11.6 μm filters using CanariCam on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. In combination with already published observations, we compile the 1-12 μm total and polarized nuclear spectral energy distribution (SED). The total flux SED in the central 400 pc is explained as the combination of (1) a hot (731 ± 4 K) dusty structure, directly irradiated by the central engine, which is at 1.6 ± 0.1 pc away and attributed to be in the pc-scale polar region, (2) an optically-thick, smooth and disc-like dusty structure ('torus') with an inclination of 48° ± 23° surrounding the central engine, and (3) an extinguished (AV = 36 ± 5 mag) starburst component. The polarized SED decreases from 0.77 ± 0.14 per cent at 1.2 μm to 0.31 ± 0.15 per cent at 11.6 μm and follows a power-law function, λ ~0.57. The polarization angle remains constant (~108°) in the 1-12 μm wavelength range. The dominant polarization mechanism is explained as scattering-off hot dust grains in the pc-scale polar regions. We map the gas excitation and kinematics, and the stellar population properties of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 using Gemini Near Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph in the J and K bands at a spatial and velocity resolution of 105 pc and 45 km s-1, respectively. Emission-line flux distributions in ionized and molecular gas extend up to ≈400 pc from the nucleus, where they are found to peak. The mass of HII is 4.8±0.6 × 106 M⊙ and the mass of warm H2 is 1.1±0.2 × 10³ M⊙, while the mass of cold H2 is estimated as 5.8±1.2 × 108 M⊙. The Pa γ emission shows two kinematic components: one in blueshift, with velocity reaching ≈-300 km s-1 and another showing a velocity field characteristic of rotation in the galaxy plane. The blueshifted component is also observed in the coronal line [S IX]λ1.2523 μm, while the rotational component is also observed in the molecular gas. We interpret this velocity field as due to gas rotating in the galaxy plane plus an outflow, and estimate a mass outflow rate of 6.8±0.75 M⊙ yr-1. Spectral synthesis of the continuum shows nuclear emission dominated by a featureless AGN continuum combined with hot dust emission attributed to a dusty torus. The stellar population is dominated by an old (2 Gyr < t ≤ 15 Gyr) component between 160 and 300 pc, while closer to the nucleus, an intermediate age (50 Myr < t ≤ 2 Gyr) component contributes at levels ranging from ≈40 per cent to ≈100 per cent to the flux at 2.12 μm. We conducted a high-sensitivity radio detection survey for 40 narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies using a very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique at 22GHz through phase-referencing long-time integration and using a newly developing recorder with a data rate of 8Gbps, which is a candidate of the next generation VLBI data recording systems of the Japanese VLBI Network. The baseline sensitivity was typically a few mJy. The observations resulted in a detection rate of 12/40 for our radio-selected NLS1 sample: 11 out of the 12 detected NLS1s showed inverted radio spectra between 1.4 and 22GHz on the basis of the Very Large Array flux densities and the VLBI detections. These high fractions suggest that a compact radio core with a high brightness temperature is frequently associated with NLS1 nuclei. On the other hand, at least half of the sample indicated apparently steep spectra even with the limited VLBI sensitivity. Both the inverted and the steep spectrum radio sources are included in the NLS1 population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A multi-epoch, multi-instrument analysis of the Seyfert 1 galaxy HE 0436-4717 is conducted using optical to X-ray data from XMM-Newton and Swift (including the Burst Alert Telescope). Fitting of the UV-to-X-ray spectral energy distribution shows little evidence of extinction and the X-ray spectral analysis does not confirm previous reports of deep absorption edges from O VIII. HE 0436-4717 is a 'bare' Seyfert with negligible line-of-sight absorption making it ideal to study the central X-ray emitting region. Three scenarios were considered to describe the X-ray data: partial covering absorption, blurred reflection, and soft Comptonization. All three interpretations describe the 0.5-10.0 keV spectra well. Extrapolating the models to 100 keV results in poorer fits for the partial covering model. When also considering the rapid variability during one of the XMM-Newton observations, the blurred reflection model appears to describe all the observations in the most self-consistent manner. If adopted, the blurred reflection model requires a very low iron abundance in HE 0436-4717. We consider the possibilities that this is an artefact of the fitting process, but it appears possible that it is intrinsic to the object. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyse a sample of 26 active galactic nuclei (AGN) with deep XMM-Newton observations, using principal component analysis (PCA) to find model-independent spectra of the different variable components. In total, we identify at least 12 qualitatively different patterns of spectral variability, involving several different mechanisms, including five sources which show evidence of variable relativistic reflection (MCG-6-30-15, NGC 4051, 1H 0707-495, NGC 3516 and Mrk 766) and three which show evidence of varying partial covering neutral absorption (NGC 4395, NGC 1365 and NGC 4151). In over half of the sources studied, the variability is dominated by changes in a power-law continuum, both in terms of changes in flux and power-law index, which could be produced by propagating fluctuations within the corona. Simulations are used to find unique predictions for different physical models, and we then attempt to qualitatively match the results from the simulations to the behaviour observed in the real data. We are able to explain a large proportion of the variability in these sources using simple models of spectral variability, but more complex models may be needed for the remainder. We have begun the process of building up a library of different principal components, so that spectral variability in AGN can quickly be matched to physical processes. We show that PCA can be an extremely powerful tool for distinguishing different patterns of variability in AGN, and that it can be used effectively on the large amounts of high-quality archival data available from the current generation of X-ray telescopes. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are the most luminous persistent objects in the universe. The X-ray domain is particularly important because the X-ray flux represents a significant fraction of the bolometric emission from such objects and probes the innermost regions of accretion disks, where most of this power is generated. An excess of X-ray emission below ~2 keV, called soft-excess, is very common in Type 1 AGN spectra. The origin of this feature remains debated. Originally modeled with a blackbody, there are now several possibilities to model the soft-excess, including warm Comptonization and blurred ionized reflection. In this paper, we test ionized-reflection models on Mrk 509, a bright Seyfert 1 galaxy for which we have a unique data set, in order to determine whether it can be responsible for the strong soft-excess. We use ten simultaneous XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL observations performed every four days. We present here the results of the spectral analysis, the evolution of the parameters, and the variability properties of the X-ray emission. The application of blurred ionized-reflection models leads to a very strong reflection and an extreme geometry, but fails to reproduce the broad-band spectrum of Mrk 509. Two different scenarios for blurred ionized reflection are discussed: stable geometry and lamp-post configuration. In both cases we find that the model parameters do not follow the expected relations, indicating that the model is fine-tuned to fit the data without physical justification. A large, slow variation in the soft-excess without a counterpart in the hard X-rays could be explained by a change in ionization of the reflector. However, such a change does not naturally follow from the assumed geometrical configuration. Warm Comptonization remains the most probable origin of the soft-excess in this object. Nevertheless, it is possible that both ionized reflection and warm Comptonization mechanisms can explain the soft-excess in all objects, one dominating the other one, depending on the physical conditions of the disk and the corona. We present long-term (months–years) X-ray spectral variability of the Seyfert 1.8 galaxy NGC 1365 as observed by Swift, which provides well-sampled observations over a much longer timescale (six years) and a much larger flux range than is afforded by other observatories. At very low luminosities, the spectrum is very soft, becoming rapidly harder as the luminosity increases and then, above a particular luminosity, softening again. At a given flux level, the scatter in hardness ratio is not very large, meaning that the spectral shape is largely determined by the luminosity. The spectra were therefore summed in luminosity bins and fitted with a variety of models. The best-fitting model consists of two power laws, one unabsorbed and another, more luminous, which is absorbed. In this model, we find a range of intrinsic 0.5–10.0 keV luminosities of approximately 1.1–3.5 erg s−1, and a very large range of absorbing columns, of approximately 1022–1024 cm−2. Interestingly, we find that the absorbing column decreases with increasing luminosity, but that this result is not due to changes in ionization. We suggest that these observations might be interpreted in terms of a wind model in which the launch radius varies as a function of ionizing flux and disc temperature and therefore moves out with increasing accretion rate, i.e. increasing X-ray luminosity. Thus, depending on the inclination angle of the disc relative to the observer, the absorbing column may decrease as the accretion rate goes up. The origin of the different spectral components present in the high-energy (UV to X-rays/gamma-rays) spectra of Seyfert galaxies is still being debated a lot. One of the major limitations, in this respect, is the lack of really simultaneous broad-band observations that allow us to disentangle the behavior of each component and to better constrain their interconnections. The simultaneous UV to X-rays/gamma rays data obtained during the multiwavelength campaign on the bright Seyfert 1 Mrk 509 are used in this paper and tested against physically motivated broad band models. Mrk 509 was observed by XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL in October/November 2009, with one observation every four days for a total of ten observations. Each observation has been fitted with a realistic thermal Comptonization model for the continuum emission. Prompted by the correlation between the UV and soft X-ray flux, we used a thermal Comptonization component for the soft X-ray excess. We also included a warm absorber and a reflection component, as required by the precise studies previously done by our consortium. The UV to X-ray/gamma-ray emission of Mrk 509 can be well fitted by these components. The presence of a relatively hard high-energy spectrum points to the existence of a hot (kτ ∼ 100 keV), optically-thin (τ ∼ 0.5) corona producing the primary continuum. In contrast, the soft X-ray component requires a warm (kτ ∼ 1 keV), optically-thick (τ ∼ 10-20) plasma. Estimates of the amplification ratio for this warm plasma support a configuration relatively close to the "theoretical" configuration of a slab corona above a passive disk. An interesting consequence is the weak luminosity-dependence of its emission, which is a possible explanation of the roughly constant spectral shape of the soft X-ray excess seen in AGNs. The temperature (∼3 eV) and flux of the soft-photon field entering and cooling the warm plasma suggests that it covers the accretion disk down to a transition radius Rin of 10-20 Rg. This plasma could be the warm upper layer of the accretion disk. In contrast, the hot corona has a more photon-starved geometry. The high temperature (∼100 eV) of the soft-photon field entering and cooling it favors a localization of the hot corona in the inner flow. This soft-photon field could be part of the comptonized emission produced by the warm plasma. In this framework, the change in the geometry (i.e. Rin) could explain most of the observed flux and spectral variability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. We report on a detailed study of the Fe K emission/absorption complex in the nearby, bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509. The study is part of an extensive XMM-Newton monitoring consisting of 10 pointings (∼60 ks each) about once every 4 days, and includes a reanalysis of previous XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. Aims. We aim at understanding the origin and location of the Fe K emission and absorption regions. Methods. We combine the results of time-resolved spectral analysis on both short and long time-scales including model-independent rms spectra. Results. Mrk 509 shows a clear (EW = 58±4 eV) neutral Fe Ka emission line that can be decomposed into a narrow (σ = 0.027 keV) component (found in the Chandra HETG data) plus a resolved (σ = 0.22 keV) component.We find the first successful measurement of a linear correlation between the intensity of the resolved line component and the 3-10 keV flux variations on time scales of years down to a few days. The Fe Kα reverberates the hard X-ray continuum without any measurable lag, suggesting that the region producing the resolved Fe Kα component is located within a few light days to a week (r ≲ 103 rg) from the black hole (BH). The lack of a redshifted wing in the line poses a lower limit of ≥40 rg for its distance from the BH. The Fe Kα could thus be emitted from the inner regions of the BLR, i.e. within the ∼80 light days indicated by the Hβ line measurements. In addition to these two neutral Fe Kα components, we confirm the detection of weak (EW ∼ 8-20 eV) ionised Fe K emission. This ionised line can be modelled with either a blend of two narrow Fe xxv and Fe xxvI emission lines (possibly produced by scattering from distant material) or with a single relativistic line produced, in an ionised disc, down to a few rg from the BH. In the latter interpretation, the presence of an ionised standard a-disc, down to a few rg, is consistent with the source high Eddington ratio. Finally, we observe a weakening/disappearing of the mediumand high-velocity high-ionisation Fe K wind features found in previous XMM-Newton observations. Conclusions. This campaign has made the first reverberation measurement of the resolved component of the Fe Kα line possible, from which we can infer a location for the bulk of its emission at a distance of r ∼ 40-1000 rg from the BH. Aims. We present results of a comprehensive spectral study on the large-scale environment of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) based on Sloan Spectroscopic Survey data. Methods. We analyzed the spectra of galaxies in the environment of AGN and other activity classes up to distances of 1 Mpc. Results. The mean Ha and [O?III]?λ5007 line luminosities in the environmental galaxies within a projected radius of 1 Mpc are highest around Seyfert 1 galaxies, with decreasing luminosities for Seyfert 2 and HII galaxies, and lowest for absorption line galaxies. Furthermore, there is a trend toward Ha and [OIII] luminosities in the environmental galaxies increasing as a function of proximity to the central emission line galaxies. There is another clear trend toward a neighborhood effect within a radius of 1000 kpc for the AGN and non-AGN types: Seyfert galaxies tend to have the highest probability of having another Seyfert galaxy in the neighborhood. HII galaxies tend to have the highest probability of having another HII galaxy in the neighborhood, etc. The number of companions within 1000 kpc is inversely correlated with the Hα, [O?III]?λ5007, as well as with the continuum luminosities of the central galaxies, regardless of whether they are of Seyfert, HII, or absorption line types. ABSTRACT We present a time, spectral and imaging analysis of the X-ray reflector in NGC 4945, which reveals its geometrical and physical structure with unprecedented detail. NGC 4945 hosts one of the brightest AGN in the sky above 10 keV, but it is only visible through its reflected/scattered emission below 10 keV, due to absorption by a column density of ∼4 × 1024 cm−2. A new Suzaku campaign of five observations spanning ∼6 months, together with past XMM-Newton and Chandra observations, shows a remarkable constancy (within <10 per cent) of the reflected component. Instead, Swift-BAT reveals strong intrinsic variability on time-scales longer than 1 yr. Modelling the circumnuclear gas as a thin cylinder with the axis on the plane of the sky, we show that the reflector is at a distance ≥30-50 pc, well within the imaging capabilities of Chandra at the distance of NGC 4945 (1 arcsec ∼18 pc). Accordingly, the Chandra imaging reveals a resolved, flattened, ∼150 pc long clumpy structure, whose spectrum is fully due to cold reflection of the primary AGN emission. SDSS J1356 + 1026 is a pair of interacting galaxies at redshift z = 0.123 that hosts a luminous obscured quasar in its northern nucleus. Here we present two long-slit Magellan LDSS-3 spectra that reveal a pair of symmetric ~ 10 kpc size outflows emerging from this nucleus, with observed expansion velocities of ~250 km s-1 in projection. We present a kinematic model of these outflows and argue that the deprojected physical velocities of expansion are likely ~ 1000 km s-1 and that the kinetic energy of the expanding shells is likely 1044-45 erg s-1, with an absolute minimum of > 1042 erg s-1. Although a radio counterpart is detected at 1.4 GHz, it is faint enough that the quasar is considered to be radio quiet by all standard criteria, and there is no evidence of extended emission due to radio lobes, whether aged or continuously powered by an ongoing jet. We argue that the likely level of star formation is insufficient to power the observed energetic outflow and that SDSS J1356 + 1026 is a good case for radio-quiet quasar feedback. We present the results of a reverberation mapping (RM) campaign on the black hole (BH) associated with the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in SDSSJ114008.71+030711.4 (hereafter GH08). This object is selected from a sample of 19 candidate intermediate-mass BHs (MBH < 106 M⊙)found by Greene & Ho in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We used the Hobby-Eberly Telescope to obtain 30 spectra over a period of 178 days in an attempt to resolve the reverberation time lag (τ) between the continuum source and the broad-line region (BLR) in order to determine the radius of the BLR (RBLR) in GH08. We measure τ to be two days with an upper limit of six days. We estimate the AGN luminosity at 5100 Å to be λL5100 ≈ 1.1 x 1043 erg s-1 after deconvolution from the host galaxy. The most well-calibrated RBLR--L relation predicts a time lag that is four times larger than what we measure. Using the measured Hβ full width at half-maximum of 703 ± 110 km s-1 and an upper limit for RBLR = 6 light days, we find MBH ≲ 5.8 X 105 M⊙ as an upper limit to the BH virial mass in GH08, which implies super-Eddington accretion. Based on our measured MBH we propose that GH08 may be another candidate to add to the very short list of AGNs with MBH < 106 M⊙ determined using RM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As part of an extensive study of the physical properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) we report high spatial resolution near-IR integral-field spectroscopy of the narrow-line region (NLR) and coronal-line region (CLR) of seven Seyfert galaxies. These measurements elucidate for the first time the two-dimensional spatial distribution and kinematics of the recombination line Bry and high-ionization lines [Si VI], [Al IX], and [Ca VIII] on scales <300 pc from the AGN. The observations reveal kinematic signatures of rotation and outflow in the NLR and CLR. The spatially resolved kinematics can be modeled as a combination of an outflow bicone and a rotating disk coincident with the molecular gas. High-excitation emission is seen in both components, suggesting it is leaking out of a clumpy torus. While NGC 1068 (Seyfert 2) is viewed nearly edge-on, intermediate-type Seyferts are viewed at intermediate angles, consistent with unified schemes. A correlation between the outflow velocity and the molecular gas mass in r < 30 pc indicates that the accumulation of gas around the AGN increases the collimation and velocity of the outflow. The outflow rate is 2-3 orders of magnitude greater than the accretion rate, implying that the outflow is mass loaded by the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). In half of the observed AGNs, the kinetic power of the outflow is of the order of the power required by two-stage feedback models to be thermally coupled to the ISM and to match the MBH-σ* relation. We report the first simultaneous zJHK spectroscopy on the archetypical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 covering the wavelength region 0.9–2.4 μm. The slit, aligned in the north–south direction and centred in the optical nucleus, maps a region 300 pc in radius at subarcsec resolution, with a spectral resolving power of 360 km s−1. This configuration allows us to study the physical properties of the nuclear gas including that of the north side of the ionization cone, map the strong excess of continuum emission in the K band and attributed to dust and study the variations, both in flux and profile, in the emission lines. Our results show the following. (1) Mid- to low-ionization emission lines are split into two components, whose relative strengths vary with the position along the slit and seem to be correlated with the jet. (2) The coronal lines are single-peaked and are detected only in the central few hundred of pc from the nucleus. (3) The absorption lines indicate the presence of intermediate age stellar population, which might be a significant contributor to the continuum in the near-IR spectra. (4) Through some simple photoionization models we find photoionization as the main mechanism powering the emitting gas. Abstract: We have analyzed the radio light curves of the Seyfert galaxy III Zw 2 at 22 and 37GHz taken from the database of Metsähovi Radio Observatory, and found evidence of quasi-periodic activity. The light curves show great activity, with very complicated non-sinusoidal variations. Period of was consistently identified by three methods: the Jurkevich method, the power spectrum intensity estimation method and the discrete correlation function method. The variability period of about 5.14yr in III Zw 2 is caused most likely by the helical motion of the jet. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A detailed analysis of a long XMM–Newton observation of the narrow-line type 1 Seyfert galaxy 1H0707-495 is presented, including spectral fitting, spectral variability and timing studies. The two main features in the spectrum are the drop at ∼7 keV and a complex excess below 1 keV. These are well described by two broad, K and L, iron lines. Alternative models based on absorption, although they may fit the high-energy drop, cannot account for the 1 keV complexity and the spectrum as a whole. Spectral variability shows that the spectrum is composed of at least two components, which are interpreted as a power law dominating between 1–4 keV and a reflection component outside this range. The high count rate at the iron L energies has enabled us to measure a significant soft lag of ∼30 s between 0.3–1 and 1–4 keV, meaning that the direct hard emission leads the reflected emissions. We present the quasi-stellar object (QSO) luminosity function (LF) of the completed 2dF–SDSS LRG and QSO (2SLAQ) survey, based on QSOs photometrically selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging data and then observed spectroscopically using the 2dF instrument on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We analyse 10 637 QSOs in the redshift range to a g-band flux limit of 21.85 (extinction-corrected) and an absolute continuum magnitude of . This sample covers an area of 191.9 deg2. The binned QSO LF agrees with that of the brighter SDSS main QSO sample, but extends mag fainter, clearly showing the flattening of the LF towards faint absolute magnitudes. 2SLAQ finds an excess of QSOs compared to the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey at , as found previously by Richards et al. The LF is consistent with other previous, much smaller, samples produced to the depth of 2SLAQ. By combining the 2SLAQ and SDSS QSO samples, we produce a QSO LF with an unprecedented combination of precision and dynamic range. With this we are able to accurately constrain both the bright and faint ends of the QSO LF. While the overall trends seen in the evolution of the QSO LF appear similar to pure luminosity evolution, the data show very significant departures from such a model. Most notably we see clear evidence that the number density of faint QSOs peaks at lower redshift than bright QSOs: QSOs with have space densities which peak at , while QSOs at peak at . By fitting simple LF models in narrow intervals, we find that this downsizing is significant at the 99.98 per cent level. We show that LF models which follow the pure luminosity evolution form [i.e. ], but with a redshift-dependent bright-end slope and an additional density evolution term, , provide a much improved fit to the data. The bright-end slope, α, steepens from at to at . This steepening is significant at the 99.9 per cent level. We find a decline in from to 2.5 which is significant at the 94 per cent level. Hawkins reported on a class of ‘naked’ active galactic nuclei (AGN) characterized by strong amplitude optical brightness variability and the complete absence of broad emission lines in the optical spectrum. The variability suggests that the nucleus is seen directly, however the absence of broad lines contradicts the simple formulation of Unified Models for AGN. We present the results of quasi-simultaneous spectroscopic observations with XMM–Newton and New Technology Telescope (NTT) (La Silla) of two ‘naked’ AGN. We confirm the ‘naked’ nature of Q2131−427 for which no broad emission line components have been detected in the optical spectrum and its X-ray spectrum shows no signs of intrinsic absorption. The optical and X-ray mismatch in this source cannot be ascribed to a high nuclear dust-to-gas ratio and a Compton-thick nature is ruled out on the basis of the high ratio. The broad-line region (BLR) may be completely absent in this source, possibly as a consequence of its low Eddington ratio. On the other hand, the optical spectrum of Q2130−431 shows Hα and Hβ broad emission line components, revealing the presence of a BLR. A mild X-ray absorption is expected in intermediate type 1.8 Seyfert galaxies like Q2130−431, however we put a very low upper limit on the column density , also the low Balmer decrement suggests that the BLR itself does not suffer from reddening. We propose that in this object the BLR is intrinsically weak, making a case of ‘true’ intermediate Seyfert galaxy. We have defined a sample of 63 active galactic nuclei with strong forbidden high-ionization line (FHIL) emission. These lines, with ionization potentials eV, respond to a portion of the spectrum that is often difficult to observe directly, thereby providing constraints on the extreme ultraviolet-soft X-ray continuum. The sources are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) on the basis of their [Fe x]λ6374 Å emission, yielding one of the largest and the most homogeneous samples of FHIL-emitting galaxies. We fit a sequence of models to both FHILs ([Fe xi], [Fe x] and [Fe vii]) and lower ionization emission lines ([O iii], [O i], , [N ii], [S ii]) in the SDSS spectra. These data are combined with X-ray measurements from the ROSAT satellite, which are available for half of the sample. The correlations between these parameters are discussed for both the overall sample and subsets defined by spectroscopic classifications. The primary results are evidence that (1) the [Fe x] and [Fe xi] lines are photoionized and their strength is proportional to the continuum flux around 250 eV, (2) the FHIL-emitting clouds form a stratified outflow in which the [Fe x] and [Fe xi] source regions extend sufficiently close to the broad-line region that they are partially obscured in Seyfert 2s, whereas the [Fe vii] source region is more extended and is unaffected by obscuration, (3) narrow-lined Seyfert 1s (NLS1s) tend to have the strongest [Fe x] flux (relative to lower ionization lines) and (4) the most extreme [Fe x] ratios (such as [Fe x]/[O iii] or [Fe x]/[Fe vii]) are found in the NLS1s with the narrowest broad lines and appear to be an optical-band indication of objects with strong X-ray soft excesses. We report two new XMM–Newton observations of PG1211+143 in 2007 December, again finding evidence for the fast outflow of highly ionized gas first detected in 2001. Stacking the new spectra with those from two earlier XMM–Newton observations reveals strong and broad emission lines of Fe xxv and O viii, indicating the fast outflow to be persistent and to have a large covering factor. This finding confirms a high mass rate for the ionized outflow in PG1211+143 and provides the first direct measurement of a wide angle, subrelativistic outflow from an active galactic nuclei (AGN) transporting mechanical energy with the potential to disrupt the growth of the host galaxy. We present two-dimensional (2D) mapping of the gas velocity field of the inner few hundred parsecs of six nearby active galaxies, using spectra obtained with the integral field unit of the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph instrument at the Gemini North telescope. In our previous paper, we reported the 2D mapping of the stellar kinematics extracted from the calcium triplet absorption lines. In this paper, we use the [S iii]λ9069 emission line to obtain the flux distribution and kinematics of the gas in the narrow-line region (NLR). The gas emission is extended by a few hundred parsecs and its kinematics are dominated by rotation in the galaxy plane. Subtraction of the rotation component reveals outflows along the NLR which show spatial correlation with radio structures seen in Very Large Array radio 3.6 and 20 cm flux images, suggesting that the radio jet is pushing the circumnuclear interstellar medium. This interpretation is also supported by the observation of high-velocity dispersion structures in association with the outflowing gas. The gas outflows and radio jets are oriented at random angles relative to the galaxy major axis, indicating that they are not launched perpendicularly to the galaxy plane. Slicing the emission-line profiles into velocity channels, we create maps of the NLR gas distribution at different radial velocities. In at least half of our sample, the highest velocities are observed close to the nucleus suggesting that the emitting gas is decelerating outwards, from projected blueshifts exceeding 400 km s−1 to values of 100–200 km s−1 at 100–200 pc from the nucleus. We have estimated mass outflow rates in the NLR of ≈1 to , which are ≈10–20 times the accretion rate necessary to feed the active nucleus. The kinetic energy of the ouflow is estimated to be 4–5 orders of magnitude smaller than the bolometric luminosity. Assuming kinetic energy transfer between the radio jet and the NLR outflows, the mass ejection rate in the radio jet is 5–6 orders of magnitude smaller than the mass accretion rate necessary to feed the nuclear supermassive black hole. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) produce vast amounts of high-energy radiation deep in their central engines. X-rays either escape the AGN or are absorbed and re-emitted mostly as infrared (IR). By studying the dispersion in the ratio of observed mid-IR luminosity to observed 2–10 keV X-ray luminosity in AGN, we can investigate the reprocessing material (possibly a torus or donut of dust) in the AGN central engine, independent of model assumptions. We studied the ratio of observed mid-IR and 2–10 keV X-ray luminosities in a heterogeneous sample of 245 AGN from the literature. We found that when we removed AGN with prominent jets, ∼90 per cent of type I AGN lay within a very tight dispersion in luminosity ratio . This implies that the AGN central engine is extremely uniform and models of the physical AGN environment (e.g. cloud cover, turbulent disc, opening angle of absorbing structures such as dusty tori) must span a very narrow range of parameters. We also found that the far-IR (100 μm) to mid-IR (12 μm) observed luminosity ratio is an effective discriminator between heavily obscured AGN and relatively unobscured AGN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multi-epoch XMM–Newton spectra of the two narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1), Mrk 478 and EXO 1346.2+2645, are presented. The data were fitted with different models, including the relativistically blurred reflection modelreflionx, which was found to give a good description of both spectra in all epochs. The two sources are reflection dominated with the illuminating continuum hidden from view. This can be explained in terms of either a corrugated disc or strong gravitational light bending effects. The emission from these two sources comes from a very small region (a few gravitational radii), very close to a rapidly spinning black hole. Spectral variability analysis shows that both sources have constant rms spectra, and constant hardness ratios in all epochs, in agreement with a single spectral component. We report on the X-ray observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy ESO 323−G077 performed with XMM–Newton. The EPIC spectra show a complex spectrum with conspicuous absorption and emission features. The continuum emission can be modelled with a power law with an index of in the whole XMM–Newton energy band, marginally consistent with typical values of type I objects. An absorption component with an uncommonly high equivalent hydrogen column is affecting the soft part of the spectrum. Additionally, two warm absorption components are also present in the spectrum. The lower ionized one, mainly imprinting the soft band of the spectrum, has an ionization parameter of and an outflowing velocity of . Two absorption lines located at ∼6.7 and can be modelled with the highly ionized absorber. The ionization parameter and outflowing velocity of the gas measured are and , respectively. Four emission lines were also detected in the soft energy band. The most likely explanation for these emission lines is that they are associated with an outflowing gas with a velocity of ∼2000 km s−1. The data suggest that the same gas which is causing the absorption could also being responsible of these emission features. Finally, the XMM–Newton spectrum shows the presence of a relativistic iron emission line likely originated in the accretion disc of a Kerr black hole with an inclination of ∼25°. We propose a model to explain the observed X-ray properties which invokes the presence of a two-phase outflow with cone-like structure and a velocity of the order of . The inner layer of the cone would be less ionized, or even neutral, than the outer layer. The inclination angle of the source would be lower than the opening angle of the outflowing cone. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are very interesting objects which display peculiar properties when compared to their broad-line analogues (BLS1). Although well studied in many wavebands, their behaviour at >10 keV is poorly studied and yet important to discriminate between models invoked to explain the complexity observed in the X-ray band. Here, we present for the first time high-energy observations (17–100 keV) of five NLS1 galaxies (three bona fide and two candidates) detected by INTEGRAL/Imager on Board INTEGRAL Satellite (IBIS) and provide for all of them a broad-band spectral analysis using data obtained by Swift/ XRT below 10 keV. The combined INTEGRAL spectrum is found to be steeper than those of classical Seyfert 1 objects. This is due to a high-energy cut-off, which is required in some individual fits as in the average broad-band spectrum. The location of this high-energy cut-off is at lower energies than typically seen in classical type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs); a reflection component may also be present but its value is compatible with those seen in standard Seyfert 1s. We do not detect a soft excess in individual objects but only in their cumulative spectrum. Our results suggest a lower plasma temperature for the accreting plasma which combined to the high accretion rates (close to the Eddington rate) points to different nuclear conditions in broad and NLS1 galaxies, likely related to different evolutionary stages. We report on simultaneous optical and X-ray observations of the Seyfert galaxy, NGC 3147. The XMM–Newton spectrum shows that the source is unabsorbed in the X-rays . On the other hand, no broad lines are present in the optical spectrum. The origin of this optical/X-rays misclassification (with respect to the Unification Model) cannot be attributed to variability, since the observations in the two bands are simultaneous. Moreover, a Compton-thick nature of the object can be rejected on the basis of the low-equivalent width of the iron Kα line (≃130 eV) and the large ratio between the 2–10 keV and the [O iii] fluxes. It seems therefore inescapable to conclude that NGC 3147 intrinsically lacks the Broad-Line Region, making it the first ‘true’ type 2 Seyfert galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on a 151-ks net exposure Suzaku observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335. The 0.5–40 keV spectrum contains a broad Fe line, a strong soft excess below about 2 keV and a Compton hump around 20–30 keV. We find that a model consisting of a power law and two reflectors provides the best fit to the time-averaged spectrum. In this model, an ionized, heavily blurred, inner reflector produces most of the soft excess, while an almost neutral outer reflector (outside ∼ 40 rg) produces most of the Fe line emission. The spectral variability of the observation is characterized by spectral hardening at very low count rates. In terms of our power-law + two-reflector model it seems like this hardening is mainly caused by pivoting of the power law. The rms spectrum of the entire observation has the curved shape commonly observed in active galactic nuclei, although the shape is significantly flatter when an interval which does not contain any deep dip in the light curve is considered. We also examine a previous 133-ks XMM–Newton observation of Mrk 335. We find that the XMM–Newton spectrum can be fitted with a similar two-reflector model as the Suzaku data and we confirm that the rms spectrum of the observation is flat. The flat rms spectra, as well as the high-energy data from the Suzaku PIN detector, disfavour an absorption origin for the soft excess in Mrk 335. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an analysis of the X-ray spectra of a sample of 37 observations of 26 Seyfert galaxies observed by XMM–Newton in order to characterize their iron Kα emission. All objects show evidence for iron line emission in the 6–7 keV band. A narrow ‘core’ at 6.4 keV is seen almost universally in the spectra, and we model this using a neutral Compton reflection component, assumed to be associated with distant, optically thick material such as the molecular torus. Once this, and absorption by a zone of ionized gas in the line of sight is accounted for, less than half of the sample observations show an acceptable fit. Approximately two-thirds of the sample shows evidence for further, broadened emission in the iron K band. When modelled with a Gaussian, the inferred energy is close to that expected for neutral iron, with a slight redshift, and an average velocity width of . The mean parameters are consistent with previous ASCA results and support the idea that the broad components can be associated with the accretion disc. Before proceeding to that conclusion, we test an alternative model comprising a blend of three to four narrow, unshifted emission lines (including the 6.4-keV core), together with one to two zones of highly ionized gas in the line of sight. Around one-third of the objects are not adequately fitted by this model, and in general better fits are obtained with a relativistic disc line model, which has fewer free parameters. None the less we find that absorption by ionized gas affects the spectrum above 2.5 keV in approximately half the sample. There is evidence for multiple ionized zones in at least three objects, but in all those cases a blurred reflector is required in addition to the complex absorption. We also identify a number of narrow emission and absorption features around the Fe complex, and the significance and interpretation of these lines is discussed. After accounting for these additional complexities, we determine the typical parameters for the broad reflection. The emission is found to come, on average, from a characteristic radius and the average disc inclination is ∼ 40°. The broad reflection is on average significantly weaker, by a factor of ∼2, than that expected from a flat disc illuminated by a point source. Notwithstanding these average properties, the objects exhibit a significant and wide range of reflection parameters. We find that 30 per cent of the sample observations can be explained solely with narrow-line components, with no evidence for broadened emission at all. A further 25 per cent show evidence for significant broad emission, but at a characteristic radius relatively far from the black hole. The remaining ∼45 per cent are best fitted with a relativistically blurred reflection model. In 12/37 observations the characteristic emission radius is constrained to be , where the gravitational redshift is measurable. For at least this subsample, our observations verify the potential for X-ray spectroscopy to diagnose the strong-gravity regime of supermassive black holes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The accretion disc in active galactic nucleus (AGN) is expected to produce strong outflows, in particular an ultraviolet (UV)-line-driven wind. Several observed spectral features, including the soft X-ray excess, have been associated with the accretion disc wind. However, current spectral models of the X-ray spectrum of AGN observed through an accretion disc wind, known to provide a good fit to the observed X-ray data, are ad hoc in their treatment of the outflow velocity and density of the wind material. In order to address these limitations we adopt a numerical computational method that links a series of radiative transfer calculations, incorporating the effect of a global velocity field in a self-consistent manner {xstar Simulation Chain for Outflows with Radiative Transfer (xscort)}. We present a series of example spectra from thexscort code that allow us to examine the shape of AGN X-ray spectra seen through a smooth wind with terminal velocity of 0.3 c, as appropriate for a UV-line-driven wind. We calculate spectra for a range of different acceleration laws, density distributions, total column densities and ionization parameters, but all these have sharp features that contrast strongly with both the previous ‘smeared absorption’ models, and with the observed smoothness of the soft X-ray excess. This rules out absorption in a radiatively driven accretion disc wind as the origin of the soft X-ray excess, though a larger terminal velocity, possibly associated with material in a magnetically driven outflow/jet, may allow outflow models to recover a smooth excess. Low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are perceived to be radio loud and devoid of a ‘big blue bump’, indicating a transition from a radiatively efficient, geometrically thin, accretion disc in high-luminosity AGNs, to a geometrically thick, radiatively inefficient accretion flow at low luminosities and accretion rates. I revisit the issue of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of low-luminosity AGNs using recently published, high angular resolution data at radio, ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray wavelengths, for a sample of 13 nearby galaxies with low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) nuclei. I show that, contrary to common wisdom, low-luminosity LINERs have significant non-stellar UV flux, and UV/X-ray luminosity ratios similar, on average, to those of Seyfert 1 nuclei ∼104 times more luminous. The index that quantifies this ratio is in the range between −0.8 and −1.4, and is below the extrapolation to low luminosities of the relation between and UV luminosity observed at higher luminosities. In terms of radio loudness, most of the LINERs are indeed radio loud (or sometimes even ‘super radio loud’) based on their radio/UV luminosity ratios, when compared to the most luminous quasars. However, the entire distribution of radio loudness has been shown to shift to higher radio/UV ratios at low AGN luminosities. In the context of this global shift, some LINERs (the majority) can be considered radio quiet, and some (from among those with black hole masses ) are radio loud. The SEDs of these low-luminosity AGNs are thus quite similar to those of Seyferts up to luminosities of , and there is no evidence for a sharp change in the SED at the lowest luminosities. Thin AGN accretion discs may therefore persist at low accretion rates, in analogy to some recent findings for Galactic stellar-mass accreting black holes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present results of a high-resolution soft X-ray (0.2–2 keV) spectroscopic study of a sample of 69 nearby obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) observed with the reflection grating spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM–Newton. This is the largest sample ever studied with this technique so far. The main conclusions of our study can be summarized as follows: (i) narrow radiative recombination continua are detected in about 36 per cent of the objects in our sample (in 26 per cent their intrinsic width is ≤10 eV); (ii) higher order transitions are generally enhanced with respect to pure photoionization, indicating that resonant scattering plays an important role in the ionization/excitation balance. These results support the scenario, whereby the active nucleus is responsible for the X-ray ‘soft excess’ almost ubiquitously observed in nearby obscured AGNs via photoionization of circumnuclear gas. They confirm on a statistical basis the conclusions drawn from the detailed study of the brightest spectra in the sample. Furthermore, we propose a criterion to statistically discriminate between AGN-photoionized sources and starburst galaxies, based on intensity of the forbidden component of the O vii Heα triplet (once normalized to the O viii Lyα) coupled with the integrated luminosity in He- and H-like oxygen lines. Values of black hole masses are frequently determined with the help of the reverberation method. This method requires a specific geometrical factor related to the distribution of the orbits of the broad-line region clouds. Onken et al. determined the value from the black hole mass–dispersion relation. In this paper, we determine this factor using an independent mass determination from the X-ray variance method for a number of Seyfert 1 galaxies and comparing them with the reverberation results by Peterson et al. We obtain mean value , consistent with Onken et al. Both values are larger than the value 0.75 corresponding to a spherical geometry. It indicates that most probably all values of the black hole masses obtained with the use of the Kaspi et al. formulae should be multiplied by a factor of ∼1.7. This also shows that the broad-line region is rather flat, and hints for a dependence of the factor f2 on a source inclination seem to be present in the data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ever since the coexistence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and a starburst was observationally discovered, there has been a significant controversy over whether there is a physical connection between starbursts and AGN. If yes, it is a subject of interest to reveal which one triggers another. Here, we bring a unique insight into the subject by identifying 840 galaxies with both a post-starburst signature (strong Balmer absorption lines) and an AGN (based on the emission-line ratio). These post-starburst AGN account for the 4.2 per cent of all the galaxies in a volume-limited sample. The presence of a post-starburst phase with an active AGN itself is of importance, suggesting that AGN may outlive starbursts in the starburst–AGN connection. In addition, we have performed spatially resolved spectroscopy of three of our post-starbusrst AGN galaxies, obtaining some evidence that the post-starburst region is more extended, but sharply centred around the central AGN, confirming a spatial connection between the post-starburst and AGN. We study the X-ray spectral variability of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 as observed during two XMM–Newton observations. To gain insight on the general behaviour, we first apply model-independent techniques such as rms spectra and flux–flux plots. We then perform time-resolved spectral analysis by splitting the observations into 68 spectra (2 ks each). The data show evidence for a neutral and constant-reflection component and for constant emission from photoionized gas, which are included in all spectral models. The nuclear emission can be modelled both in terms of a ‘standard model’[pivoting power-law plus a blackbody (BB) component for the soft excess] and of a two-component one (power law plus ionized reflection from the accretion disc). Both the models reproduce the source spectral variability and cannot be distinguished on a statistical ground. The distinction has thus to be made on a physical basis. The standard model results indicate that the soft excess does not follow the standard BB law , despite a variation in luminosity by about one order of magnitude. The resulting temperature is consistent with being constant and has the same value as observed in the PG quasars. Moreover, although the spectral slope is correlated with flux, which is consistent with spectral pivoting, the hardest photon indices are so flat as to require rather unusual scenarios. Furthermore, the very low flux states exhibit an inverted Γ–flux behaviour which disagrees with a simple pivoting interpretation. These problems can be solved in terms of the two-component model in which the soft excess is not thermal, but due to the ionized reflection component. In this context, the power law has a constant slope (about 2.2) and the slope–flux correlation is explained in terms of the relative contribution of the power-law and reflection components which also explains the shape of the flux–flux plot relationship. The variability of the reflection component from the inner disc closely follows the predictions of the light-bending model, suggesting that most of the primary nuclear emission is produced in the very innermost regions, only a few gravitational radii ( rg) from the central black hole. We present XMM–Newton observations of the Seyfert 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) . We have conducted a study into the warm absorber present in this source, and using high-resolution Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) data we find that the absorption can be characterized by two phases: a phase with log ionization parameter ξ of 0.50 (where ξ is in units of erg cm s−1) and a column of , and a phase with log ξ of 1.62 and a column of . An iron Kα line is detected. Neutral absorption is also present in the source, and we discuss possible origins for this. On the assumption that the ionized absorbers originate as an outflow from the inner edge of the torus, we use a new method for finding the volume filling factor. Both phases of have small volume filling factors (≤1 per cent). We also derive the volume filling factors for a sample of 23 AGN using this assumption and for the absorbers with , we find reasonable agreement with the filling factors obtained through the alternative method of equating the momentum flow of the absorbers to the momentum loss of the radiation field. By comparing the filling factors obtained by the two methods, we infer that some absorbers with occur at significantly larger distances from the nucleus than the inner edge of the torus. We investigate the high-frequency radio spectra of 20 low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) with compact radio cores. Our millimetre survey with the Nobeyama Millimetre Array (NMA) and analyses of submillimetre archival data that had been obtained with the Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) reveal the following properties. At least half of the LLAGNs show inverted spectra between 15 and 96 GHz; we use the published data at 15 GHz with the Very Large Array (VLA) in a 0.15-arcsec resolution and our measurements at 96 GHz with the NMA in a 7-arcsec resolution. The inverted spectra are not artificially made due to their unmatched beam sizes, because of little diffuse contamination from dust, H ii regions, or extended jets in these LLAGNs. Such high-frequency inverted spectra are apparently consistent with a ‘submillimetre bump’, which is predicted by an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) model. We find a strong correlation between the high-frequency spectral index and low-frequency core power measured with very-long-baseline-interferometry (VLBI) instruments. The inverted spectra are found exclusively in low-core-power sources, while steep spectra are in high-core-power ones with prominent pc-scale jets. This suggests that the ADAF and non-thermal jets may coexist. The flux ratios between disc and jet seem to be different from LLAGN to LLAGN; disc components can be seen in nuclear radio spectra only if the jets are faint. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fifty-three spectrograms in the optical region (3700–7300 Å) with the spectral resolution ∼8 Å have been obtained for the Seyfert nucleus of the galaxy NGC 3227 with the 6-m telescope on January 1977, while the nucleus was in the historically important epoch of its extreme maximum brightness. Width of the slit was 1″, length of the box during the spectra measurements was 1.5″. Data obtained by us and those compiled from literature showed that profiles of the Balmer lines Hα, Hβ and Hγ are different, evidencing that the gas emitting these lines is highly self-absorbed. It was shown that narrow components of the profiles revealed by Rubin and Ford kept their positions (radial velocities) over 25 years. The components showed intensity variations compared to the central one from minimum to maximum of the nucleus brightness. The same variations were observed by us earlier in the emission line profiles of the NGC 7469 nucleus spectrum. Narrow profile components can reflect long-lived flows or jets in the broad line region (BLR). Obtained facts evidenced that long-lived gas streams and flows causing narrow components of broad line profiles presented not only when BLR of accretion disc is strong but when BLR of accretion disc declined. Blue bump at radial velocity of −5000 km/s in Hγ profile was revealed in spectra of high states of the nucleus, which disappeared in low state. One of the interpretations of this event can be in the framework of a model of one-sided or two-sided gas ejection during the high state of the nucleus, positive radial velocities of which being screened out by a circumnuclear disk. We investigate the use of relativistically blurred photoionized disc models on an XMM–Newton observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PG 1404+226. The model is designed to reproduce the radiation from the inner accretion disc around a Kerr black hole, and is more successful at fitting the spectrum than models based on a thermal soft excess. The source varies strongly over the course of the observation, and the disc model works over all observed flux states. We conclude that it is a useful tool in the study of certain quasars. We have cross-correlated the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) second data release spectroscopic galaxy sample with the IRAS Faint Source Catalogue (FSC). Optical emission line ratios are used to classify the galaxies with reliable IRAS 60- and 100-μm detections into active galactic nuclei (AGN) and normal star-forming galaxies. We then create subsamples of normal galaxies and AGN that are very closely matched in terms of key physical properties such as stellar mass, redshift, size, concentration and mean stellar age (as measured by absorption line indicators in the SDSS spectra). We then quantify whether there are systematic differences between the infrared (IR) luminosities of the galaxies and the AGN in the matched subsamples. We find that the AGN exhibit a significant excess in far-infrared (FIR) emission relative to the star-forming galaxies in our sample. The excesses at 60 and 100 μm are and in and , respectively. We then discuss whether the FIR excess is produced by radiation from the active nucleus that is absorbed by dust or, alternatively, by an extra population of young stars that is not detectable at optical wavelengths.
